hat's been described as the most sophisticated marijuana greenhouse in Europe has been closed down by the Guardia Civil in Murcia, with seven Dutch people and an Icelandic national being arrested. The premises were located at Molina de Segura, with six thousand plants discovered growing in the warehouse, with the plants and associated paraphernalia said to be worth around one million euro. The Guardia said that the gang had advanced plans to open up a second greenhouse in the Crevillente area. Such was the size of the operation at Molina (10 tons of marijuana every month was taken by road to Holland), that power cuts made the authorities suspicious of what might be going

WHATSON’S TV VIEWS on. The sheer amount of illegal electricity needed to power up the extensive lights and heating system led to a cable overloading and catching fire on an industrial estate where the drug greenhouse was located. As the gang dispersed, the Guardia swept them up at various locations, as they

kept a track of their movements. A Dutch couple who ran the operation were picked up in Rojales, whilst a man was arrested at Alicante-Elche airport as he was planning to board a flight to Iceland. Two others were detained as they tried to flee the country by car. Besides legal action over

public health and trafficking issues, prosecutors have also pledged to recover the costs of the illegal electricity, and have just started an action against a marijuana plantation in Novelda that syphoned off nearly 13 thousand euro of unpaid power from Iberdrola over a number of years.

BRIT IN DOG QUIZ A British man was

arrested after his dog died

next to a campsite in the El Campello area of Alicante. The Guardia Civil moved in after being told by the local police that they found a dead dog in a cage outside the site. Appearing in Alicante police court, the unnamed defendant said that he had to leave the campsite because he was in arrears

on his payments and asked a friend to look after the animal. It was put in a cage on the fringe of the site, with the promise that it would be fed but the owner returned two days later to find that the dog was dead in the cage. The defendant was freed on bail after his statement to the court, but is charged with animal abuse.

Customs officers and Murcia tax officials hit the jackpot last week in a major drugs raid on a boat that was docked in a Mar Menor harbour. Fourteen hundred kilos of cannabis resin was seized with a street value of around two point three million euro from a motorboat anchored at the Tomás

Maestre port. Four Spaniards from Alicante, Murcia, and Madrid were arrested, with the drugs neatly packaged in 44 bundles. The operation was conveniently called Maestro, with the men facing smuggling and drugs charges in front of a San Javier judge.

north in the Elche area, there was also an incident on the southbound carriageway of the AP-7 on Sunday afternoon, when a refrigerated lorry carrying fruit rolled over onto its side, causing delays to motorists. The lorry driver walked away with no serious injuries. Meanwhile, two people were injured last Friday

morning when their car overturned on the AP-7 in the Dolores area. They were travelling on the Alicante-bound carriageway of the motorway and were taken to Torrevieja Hospital for treatment. The accident happened at around 10.30am, with a crane being brought in to remove the vehicle some two hours later.

An iconic roundabout in San Javier has been given an 11 thousand euro makeover. The El Mirador roundabout features a plane donated by the area's General Air Academy, with

the council planting new grass and plants in a series of beds, as well as installing drip irrigation and removing surplus land. The crowning glory will be some new lighting focusing on the plane itself.

A local residents group say that no effort was made by Orihuela council to remove seaweed and algae from some Orihuela Costa beaches before last weekend’s bank holiday break. The FAOC (La Federación de Asociación de Vecinos de la Costa) said they had approached the authority about cleaning up a number of Campoamor area beach-

es like La Glea ahead of the long holiday weekend, but nothing happened. Coastal councillor, Sofía Álvarez said the situation on the beaches was a natural one, with the appearance only temporary and that emergency action was not needed because the area was no longer in the “high” tourist season. The seaweed is beneficial to the water cleanliness.

Dirty Beaches

Alicante-Elche airport has recorded yet another recordbreaking month for passengers easily passing the million mark for September, whilst the Murcia regional airport at San Javier, continues to flounder, though that’s unsurprising with a number of services choosing to use Alicante-Elche at its expense. September’s returns for the facility at El Altet were just below one point one million passengers, a rise of four point six percent on September 2014, and that means that over the first nine months of 2015, AlicanteElche airport had almost eight point three million passengers, an increase of three point eight percent on the same period in 2014, which

in itself was a record-breaking year. Fewer services meant fewer passengers at San Javier, with 138 thousand people using the airport in September, some four point

four percent down on last year, with so far 908 thousand passengers going through the airport in the first nine months of 2015, a reduction of two point four percent on 2014’s figures.

Handbrake Hell

An elderly couple had the shock of their lives last week when their car rolled from the Nautilus Restaurant car park at Rocío del Mar, Torrevieja and straight into the sea. Missing Link A delayed motorway stretch has finally opened between Granada and Málaga via Almería, meaning the three provinces are connected along the coast. The opening ceremony was carried out by Prime

Minister, Mariano Rajoy. Drivers will no longer have to negotiate the traffic jams and 1,060 bends along the N-340 single-carriageway inter-provincial highway – although they were originally promised the final stretch of

the AP-7 would be open by 2008. This means the AP-7 now links the French border in the province of Girona with Algeciras in Cádiz province, which is just one province away from Portugal.

Delay Over The logjam over trying to restore the deserted Arenales del Sol hotel which faces onto the local Arenales beach appears to have been solved according to Elche’s planning councillor, José Manuel Sánchez. Work was due to start at the end of last year to totally renovate the empty building which has been empty since 1979, but approval of licenses have been mired in delays in a process that has run for over a decade. Now,

Manuel Sánchez says that developer Princesol has been given the green light for a start early next year, with the project finishing in 2018. The eleven million euro redevelopment would

see the building become a four-star resort complex with 100 bedrooms, as well as restaurants, bars, function rooms, and spas which will be open to non-residents.

The weekly Saturday market at Almoradi has become a haven for pickpockets according to the traders union, the SPPLB. They say that they are getting reports of an average 15 thefts every week, with older people being especially vulnerable.

Valencia Day was commemorated last Friday across all of the municipalities in the Valencia region including Torrevieja and Orihuela. Every year, October 9th is the date the region celebrates the same day in 1238 when King James I officially entered the city of Valencia, freeing it from Moorish rule. In Torrevieja, the Valencia flag was raised in the Plaza de la Constitucion by the mayor, José Manuel Dolon, who said it was a great day for celebration, but criticised the previous Partido Popular regional government, he was happy that the new left of centre administration was full of people that would change

things. Over in Orihuela, the PP mayor, Emilio Bascuñana pulled no punches in asking the Valencian government to respect the wishes of the area, and that people should not be discriminated against for not speaking the regional Valenciano language, adding that school children should not be forced to "use a language that isn't heard in the street". Bascuñana also added that the traditions and history of the Orihuela area should be respected, and that meant no negativity from Valencian authorities towards people that have "only learnt and speak Spanish/Castilian".

Taxing Times Barcelona star, Lionel Messi, will have to answer tax fraud charges in court after all, just days after being told by prosecutors that he was in the clear. In a surprise move, the investigating judge last Thursday rejected the request of the public prosecutor to try only the Argentine footballer's father, Jorge. The pair were accused in 2013 of defrauding the taxman out of just over four millions euro in taxes related to Messi's image rights

between 2007 and 2009 through the creation of fake companies in Belize and Uruguay. Both Messi and his father denied wrongdoing and instead pointed the finger at a former agent. They both face jail sentences of up 22 months each, but since it is a first offence and the four million euro has already been paid to the tax office, reporters will be deprived of seeing one of the world’s famous footballers having to go to prison.

Alicante port has produced a massive 87 percent rise in the number of cruise passengers landing there in August compared to the same month last year. From January to August, there have been over 35 thousand cruise passengers arriving, compared to 18,838 for the same period in 2014. Of the 35 thousand passengers, just over 13 thousand decided to go on shore to try out the delights of the city. Despite the big rise, Alicante’s numbers are still behind Cartagena and Valencia, although their passenger numbers have only increased by seven percent and nine percent respectively.

VW Pledge German carmaker, Volkswagen, has guaranteed to invest over four billion euro in Spain, according to Industry Minister, Jose Manuel Soria. VW accounts for 22 thousand employees directly or indirectly in the country, and announced investments earlier this year in Navarra and Barcelona. Those have been confirmed by the company's new chief executive, Matthias Mueller, in the wake of the recent emissions scandal, with Jose Manuel Soria saying that he had met the new VW chairman, Hans Dieter Poetsch, who had pledged his commitment to the new Spanish investment.

"What counts is to talk about figures. We work on the basis of facts".

The Spanish government denied on Tuesday that its budget forecasts were too optimistic. "I can guarantee that the public accounts will meet the deficit target of four point two percent (of GDP) this year... and two point eight percent for 2016," minister Jose Manuel Soria said in a television interview. He denied claims that the government's strong forecasts were just "electioneering".

Big Salute King Felipe VI of Spain presided over his third Spanish National Day parade on Monday as around 3,400 military personnel marched through the centre of Madrid. King Felipe's second parade as monarch (his first was standing in for his father Juan Carlos) also saw a drive past of 48 vehicles and a fly past of 53 aircraft, at an estimated cost of over a million euros. The parade involved 400 more troops than in 2014, and on a day designed to highlight the unity of Spain it was attended by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, his cabinet and Socialist

Party leader Pedro Sanchez, as well as General Philip Breedlove, NATO's Supreme Allied commander in Europe. However, Basque,

Marriage Rights Respected 84 percent of Spaniards back same-sex marriage, according a Eurobarometer survey from the European Commission. The figures show that Spain is one of the most supportive countries of same-sex marriage on the continent, with the top figure coming out from the Netherlands at 91 percent. Spanish support for samesex marriage has gone up by 28 per cent since 2006

(when the law allowing people of the same gender to marry had already been operational for one year), as back then, support was only at 56 per cent. In addition, the one thousand people quizzed in Spain were asked whether or not they thought gay, lesbian and bisexual individuals should have the same rights as heterosexual people. Nearly all of them at 90 percent said yes.

Crime Down

Robberies across Alicante Province have fallen by more than 16 percent during the first half of the year, according to

Valencian government delegate, Juan Carlos Moragues, who was at an event last Sunday in Alicante to celebrate the feast day of the patron saint of the Guardia Civil, La Virgen del Pilar. Moragues said that home burglaries had dropped by 12 percent in the first six months of 2015, with a record crime low of 48.3 incidents reported per one thousand of the population. The minister quoted various figures from some of the local municipalities with robberies down by nearly 21 percent in Orihuela, whilst there was a more modest fall of nine point two percent in Elche.

Roads Up Motorists in Torrevieja face another five months of delays and diversions as work has resumed on the city gas pipeline after a break for the summer. Natural gas is currently

being brought in via Calle Campoamor as part of the ongoing seven million euro project but the works will mean more delays to drivers on various roads in the city until March 2016.

Bulls On The Run The Balearic Islands could become the third Spanish region to ban bull-fighting, thanks to a motion put forward by a left of centre independent party which is set to gain majority support in the local assembly. MP for MÉS. David Abril, says the move, largely instigated by animal rights activists, would mean reforming the existing regional animal protection law, and some of the main regional parties have told him that they would be in favour of doing so.

Green Time

Alicante Provincial Council is to hand out grants worth a total of 400 thousand euro to enhance green areas across the region. Money is to be given to improve nature areas in Callosa and Elche, whilst Benijófar is to get a grant to build a maze in the Cañada Marsa. Other funds go to Rojales to improve the condition of parkland on the La Fiesta urbanisation; Bigastro for general green area enhancements; and to San Miguel de Salinas to improve the green area around the Ciudad de las Comunicaciones.

San Javier’s Council Concensus San Javier's councillors have unanimously voted in favour of the area's local courts being upgraded in status due to the backlog in the cases. The unanimity also stretched to approving a financial package that would try to stop those in need being evicted from their homes. The council plans will create a municipal housing plan and they will talk to the necessary financial institutions about individual cases of struggling tenants and home-owners to make sure they can stay where they are.

Cycle Tips Motorists can't help avoiding the sheer number of cyclists on Spanish roads, but apparently they should give a wide berth to male cyclists aged between 15 to 24, as they more likely to be involved in an accident compared to any other cycling age category. The findings come from a Granada University study of more than 50 thousand cyclists across Spain that found that men are more likely to be hit by cars in all age groups as opposed to the ladies. Men aged over 35 are also twice as likely to die if they are hit by a car. Virginia Ruiz from the Granada research team says that she is going to take the report to the DFT Traffic Authority as part of move to educate both cyclists and drivers. Meanwhile, at least 500 cyclists staged a demonstration in the middle of Pamplona on Sunday followed by a rally throughout the northern city calling for drivers to be more careful around two-wheeled travellers and for safer road conditions. Misunderstandings between bikers and drivers are frequent, with the latter often complaining that the former ride two or more abreast and do not raise their hands to thank drivers for slowing down and giving them a wide berth – similar complaints to those made about riders on horseback.

Booted Journey

An Albanian man was found by the Guardia Civil hiding in the boot of a van that was heading for the UK on a ferry from Santander in northern Spain. The discovery was made last Thursday during a routine check as vehicles were about to board a Plymouth-bound ferry. The Guardia carried out an inspection of the vehicle having got wind that something was up and found the man in the trunk. They also detained the female Spanish driver.

Gate Crashers

Organisers of the big cycle event, La Veulta, which last August saw a stage between Torrevieja and the Northern Costa Blanca, say that the only downside of the local section was the number of people fiddling their way into the Torrevieja VIP enclosure. In a report in the Informacion newspaper, the organisers Unipublic say fake credentials were produced with the National Police being brought in to investigate the matter.

The two month hunting season started on Monday with 500 areas across the Valencia region available for the 40 thousand licensed

The President of the Valencia Hunting Federation, Vicente Segui, told the Informacion newspaper that, “the hunters perform important environmental work that is unnoticed and unappreciated. It was a well-managed hobby that helps to keep pests down that destroy crops".

Gang Busted

89 people have been arrested and accused of being part of a gang which smuggled Chinese nationals into Britain, Ireland, Canada and the United States. The network, run by Chinese and Pakistani citizens, used Spain as a transit point, housing the people in apartments in the northeast of the country while they awaited falsified travel documents, The smugglers charged up to 20 thousand euro per person, half paid in the country of origin and the other half to be handed over once they arrived at their destination, according to Spain's interior ministry. If the second pay-

ment was not made, travel documentation was withheld and, in many cases, family members were threatened, it said. Four of those arrested face charges of belonging to a criminal organisation, document falsification and crimes against foreign citizens, while the other 85 are accused of document falsification and crimes against foreign citizens, the ministry said. The investigation began following several arrests in Spanish airports of people carrying fake passports from countries including South Korea, Japan, Malaysia and Portugal.

Mar Menor’s skies will be filled this Sunday with the talents of the locallybased Eagle Patrol, who start the formal celebration of their 30th anniversary over the next year with a series of special events. As reported in last week’s Courier, Spain’s answer to the Red Arrows will stage a special display over the San Javier area from 10.00am through till 3.00pm, with

the help of top French and Italian display teams. The event, based at their headquarters at Santiago de La Ribera, will be screened live on the regional 7RM TV channel, as well as streamed via the San Javier council website. Three large car parks will be made available in Avenida Carrero Blanco area of Santiago, which will be formally renamed on Saturday

evening at 7.00pm as Avenida Patrulla Acrobática Águila (Acrobatic Eagle Patrol). An Open Day will also take place on the Saturday with a shuttle bus service operating from the main area car parks to the Eagle Patrol base. Patrol members went to the Town Hall on Tuesday to formal sign the municipality’s Book of Honour.

Examiners Brake

Spain's driving examiners have called a national strike for Wednesday October 21st, to back up their recent action of brief strikes, including protests in the Valencia and Murcia regions (pictured) that started in the

middle of September. They are worried about attacks from candidates, as well calling for better pay and more staff. The CSIF union claims their members have suffered 15 physical attacks this year, along with

a stream of verbal use, when candidates are told that they have failed the test. The CSIF says that most of these incidents happen in quiet areas where it is difficult to get help.

Passing Through

The Spanish nurse who contracted the deadly Ebola virus a year ago and lived to tell the tale, took to the streets of Madrid last week to protest on the first anniversary of her dog, Excalibur, being euthanized. Teresa Romero's pet was put down after Romero contracted Ebola, and the Madrid protest was one of 18 demonstrations across Spain organised by the Pacma animal rights party. A nurse at a Madrid hospital, Romero had been treating two Spanish mis-

sionaries who were flown home from Africa and later died. Health authorities were criticised at the time for their hasty reaction over the dog, with leading Ebola researchers questioning their actions. Since then Romero and her partner have an abandoned puppy called Alma. Pacma say they want a special facility that would allow animals to be kept in quarantine as well as for Spain's to change its policy on putting down dogs they believe might be carrying the Ebola virus.

A 34-year-old Moroccan who swallowed 700 grams of hashish was arrested at Alicante bus station as the canine police unit saw him acting strangely. The man, who was en route to Barcelona from the southern port of Algeciras, was showing some bizarre behaviour as some 10 of

the 70 acorns of the drug had started to dissolve in his stomach. His eyes were bright red; he was pale; and was threw up as agents questioned him, eventually admitting to swallowing the large stash. He was initially rumbled when a dog sniffed out that some of the acorns had

been hidden in his underpants. The man was carted off to Alicante General Hospital so that the remaining acorns could be "expired" with officers saying it was the highest amount of swallowed drugs they had encountered in their experiences at the bus station.

You Can Lead A Mule To Water, But‌..

An optimist walks into a bar and asks for a free pint. 'That is not funny,' observed Dave the barman at his pub the other evening. I say 'his' pub because Dave the barman is not only the barman there. He owns the place, too. 'So your joke is not only not funny, it is doubly unfunny,' said mein host. 'The fact that you miserable lot never buy any drinks means I cannot order myself as barman to hand over his (my) tips to me as the owner because he (me) gets no tips in the first place.' 'Then let me give you a tip, Dave,' I said. 'Life is not all about financial riches. Indeed, money is the root of all evil. I believe Mark Twain

said that.' 'Actually,' sighed Dave the barman, 'the full quote is THE LACK OF money is the root of all evil.' 'Who's Mark Twain?' asked Daft Barry. 'I thought it was William Shakespeare who said that,' commented Indoor Lou. 'No,' said Fearful Phil. 'It was definitely Daft Barry who just asked who Mark Twain was.' 'Thank the Lord you're here,' gasped Dave the barman as our leader Andromeda Arkwright arrived. 'This lot are driving me nuts. Mind you, they could be suffering from dehydration.' Andromeda took the hint and produced some folding

money from her purse. 'Drinks all round, mein host!' Tears of gratitude formed in Dave the barman's eyes as he lovingly placed the money in his till alongside the trays containing the dingy silver and grimy copper coins (and the odd tap washer) which the rest of us had scraped together for earlier rounds. 'Would you send someone out with a bottle of water,' requested Fag Ash Bill from the pavement. (As a habitual smoker, he could no longer legally enter the pub.) 'I've decided to switch from ale to a healthier drink so that I can smoke more ciggies.' 'It makes no difference whether you order a pint of beer or a bottle

of water in this pub, Bill!' I yelled. 'It's much the same thing.' Dave the barman stared hard at me and growled: 'Dave Silver, if you persist in spreading false and malicious rumours about me allegedly diluting my drinks, I shall drown you in the huge vat of water I keep on the premises for. . er . . emergencies.' Which reminds me. My father's favourite song was an opus called Cool Water which is about a man and his mule and a mirage in the desert. Dad bought the record by crooner Frankie Laine back in 1955 and he would play it over and over again on our old record player -- my father, that is, not Frankie Laine. 'What the heck has Frankie Laine and his flaming donkey got to do with ANYTHING?' demanded Andromeda Arkwright who at that point was looking as confused as everybody else in the pub. 'Sorry,' I mumbled. 'I tend to ramble occasionally. That's probably why Mrs S likes to spend her quality time alone. But might I just point out that it was a mule and not a donkey in that Frankie Laine song.' And then something stirred on the floor. Our oldest pub mate Ol' Red Eyes was slowly waking up from yet another

of his deep sleeps. He opened one rheumy peeper and managed to croak out a few unintelligible words which we had to ask him to repeat in order to make sense of his contribution to the proceedings. 'I said that is not the lack of money which is the root of all evil. It is THE WANT of money which leads to most of the wickedness in this world.' As usual, Ol' Red Eyes was a couple of conversations behind the rest of us but his theory about wealth was certainly an interesting notion. 'Would you care to expand on your hypothesis regarding the conceptual link between money and evil?' we chorused to our former guide and mentor. 'My goodness!' exclaimed Andromeda Arkwright, wonderment in her voice. 'I do believe that I may have achieved a breakthrough in my attempts to bring erudition to you collection of rough diamonds.' She gazed proudly at her pubster charges and stepped forward to embrace each of us. Unfortunately, she stepped on the outstretched form of Ol' Red Eyes and the resultant shock to his system rendered the poor blighter unconscious. All thoughts of high intellectual discussion were for-

gotten as Dave the barman went through the usual routine of phoning for an ambulance and having Ol' Red Eyes checked over at A&E where he would be certified dead and then, shortly afterwards, alive again. 'Ah, well,' sighed Andromeda Arkwright upon Ol' Red Eyes' return as the old duffer was made comfortable on the pub floor. 'At least there is always tomorrow to continue our little gabfest about life and everything. And, who knows, maybe Fag Ash Bill will extinguish his cigarette long enough to join us at the bar.' 'And wouldn't it be nice if Mark Twain and that other guy, Shakespeare, could pop in, too,' said Daft Barry. 'Yeah, yeah,' said Dave the barman. 'And maybe we can phone up Clint Eastwood and get him to come as well. Maybe he'll even get a round in. He must be worth a bob or two these days.' Ol' Red Eyes raised his head from the floor. 'But I bet Eastwood was once skint, too, just like us, until he got his first break in that TV western series Rawhide.' 'That was a fabulous show!' yelled Fag Ash Bill from the pavement. 'Great stories as well as that catchy theme song sung by Frankie Laine. Does anybody remember him?'

Top Tipple The best wines in Spain go head to head in a contest at the end of the month to find the finest wine in the country. The event will be staged at Madrid's Palacio Municipal on Thursday October 29th, with sampling available for visitors at a cool 60 euro each. 200 producers are taking part in the competition which has been organised by Guia Penn, who have created the shortlist from their 2016 wine guide.

Country Crooks Four Spaniards have been arrested by the Guardia Civil for robbing at least 35 rural cottages and sheds in the Marina Alta region of the Costa Blanca. The officers raided a house in Vergel and detained the men there after a two month operation to apprehend the gang, who are aged between 36 and 54.

Rivera’s Balance

Support for the anti-corruption centre-right Ciudadanos party surged while backing for anti-austerity party Podemos dropped sharply in October, according to the latest poll published by El Pais on Sunday, just two months before a general election on December 20th. Ciudadanos (Citizens) would take 21.5 percent of the vote if the election were held tomorrow, according to a poll of 1,200 people by Metroscopia, up from 16.1 percent a month earlier, bringing its support close to that of the two main parties. The Socialists (PSOE) and the ruling Partido Popular would gain 23.5 percent and 23.4 percent respectively, leaving Ciudadanos, led by 35year-old Albert Rivera and only running with a national agenda since January, as potential king maker. Podemos led by political scientist Pablo Iglesias, would take 14.1 percent of the vote, according to the poll which half their position from their height in January with 28.2 percent. A deep and prolonged economic crisis, massive unemployment and a slew of corruption scandals has prompted many Spaniards to turn away from the two traditional left and right parties and seek an alternative.

Spain's national court has said that Coca-Cola can go ahead with plans to reduce its bottling workforce in the country, which includes its plant in Alicante. The ruling ends a tense legal dispute that included street protests, strikes and an attempted boycott of Coke

connection with the criminal gang that organised the shipment. The three fresh arrests happened in Torrevieja, Aspe, and Alicante with authorities saying they were involved in a gang that would take drugs from a large "mother ship" and load them into small boats that would then land

ashore in Alicante Province. The fresh arrests saw two Spaniards and a Montenegrin being detained, with all of them having existing police records and they are accused of getting hold of the small boats for drug transfers as well hiding the narcotics once they hit shore.

A new exhibition featuring over 52 modern day photos of the Torrevieja area put together by the Mastral Project has opened in the Vista Alegre exhibition hall in the city. The event, which includes some videos, runs until

November 30th and is called “Torrevieja, la sal de un paisaje (Salty Landscape)”, featuring a collection of images taken by local photographers showing off a wide variety of scenic settings in the area.

A prominent Spanish banker is facing charges of trying to smuggle a 26 million euro Picasso painting out of the country via Valencia on a yacht. Jaime Botin, former boss of Bankinter and a member of the family that founded giant lender Santander, has been trying to get the painting out of the country for months. French customs seized the work "Head of a

Young Girl", at the end of July where it was found on board the yacht in Corsica, and taken to the Reina Sofia art museum in Madrid. A court in Pozuelo de Alarcon is investigating Botin, who has an appeal pending against the judicial procedures. He had been trying since 2012 to get permission to export the work but Spanish authorities refused on the grounds that

it was a unique example in Spain of that period of Picasso's work. Auction house Christie's had already tried to export the painting to Britain on Botin's behalf in 2012 but the Spanish culture ministry blocked that move. Botin later claimed that the picture was not in Spain after all and that he owned it indirectly through a Panamanian company.

A hungry and stranded vulture was rescued from the Mar Menor area at El Algar last week, having been sighted a number of times over a few days in a disorientated state. The

starving bird was safely captured and taken to the El Valle wildlife centre, and will be released once it has made a full recovery. Further north, the Guardia Civil’s Seprona wildlife team rescued a heron that had got itself entangled in some rope and branches at the mouth of the Segura river at Guardamar. The incident happened last week with the Guardia being tipped off by a number of passers-by, and they managed to release the Grey Heron, who would have died if it not been rescued imminently. After a check-up, it flew off safely without the need to take it to a wildlife centre.

Despite the recent upturn in property sales, a leading Spanish property consultancy says that around 40 percent of the country's one point six million unsold properties will take at least a decade to be sold. RR de Acuña y Asociados bluntly say that there is 'no demand

whatsover' for this stock of 657 thousand units. Their report says there were 668 thousand unsold residential properties in city areas and 331 thousand on Spain's coast at the end of last year, but they do predict that 112 of these will be sold next year and in 2017.

Andrea Dies

A 12-year-old girl from north-western Spain who had been at the centre of a debate over a "dignified death" died last Friday just four days after doctors at the University Hospital Clinic in Santiago de Compostela stopped feeding her artificially. Andrea had been suffering from a rare degenerative illness since she was a baby and had been hospitalised for the past three months, as reported in The Courier last week. A fortnight ago her

health deteriorated and Andrea's parents, Estela Ordonez and Antonio Lago, asked the hospital to remove her feeding tube, alleging that keeping her alive using artificial means was causing her a disproportionate amount of suffering. The hospital originally refused to do so and received the backing of the Galician health chief, Rocio Mosquera, who said the parents were asking for "active euthanasia." Ordonez and Lago took their case to court, while

Mosquera was sacked from her post by Galician regional leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo. The court asked for four separate reports into Andrea's condition, but 11 days ago, the hospital did an about-face and agreed to remove Andrea's feeding tube, saying the change of opinion was the result of the 12year-old's rapidly failing health. The act prompted Ordonez and Lago's lawyer to comment that Andrea's death "would be easier," than her life had been.

How To Use ‘Estar’ In The Spanish Language

This week we are going to cover the Spanish verb ESTAR which means to be, see last week´s article for the verb ´to be´ if you´re

out my articles online at thecourier.es if you miss a week. So the verb estar is an irregular verb just like it´s counterpart SER, so here is how it conjugates: yo estoy, tú estás, él/ella/usted está, nosotros/as estamos, vosotros/as e s t á i s , ellos/ellas/ustedes están. We use panish S rn ESTAR normally a e L d An 2, 3! when talking about Easy As 1, temporary situations, and in most cases it´s n o t about how we are feeling. sure One of the most common which one it expressions we use is is. You can always check ´¿cómo estás? Which

KEEP CALM

means ´how are you?´ and we usually answer with ´estoy bien´ - I´m fine. Or when speaking we can tend to miss out the verb altogether and just say ´bien´ although not grammatically correct it´s acceptable as we know what it means and to whom we are referring. So we should be ok with generally temporary conditions. For example, the sky is normally blue so if it is we use ser but if it´s grey or orange we would use estar, because it´s not how we think of it normally. The same goes for a yellow banana (ser) and when it goes black we use estar. Feelings are obviously tem-

porary; feliz, triste, enfermo, emocianado (excited) are all temporary situations which use estar whereas; alto, bajo, gordo, delgado, etc are all physical conditions that will not change and so use ser. There are some adjectives which change what you´re saying depending on whether you use ser or estar and once you see a couple, I hope you realize that the difference is quite obvious. For example, the word aburrido means bored or boring depending on which verb you use, the adjective doesn´t change, therefore if you say eres aburrido, which adjective are you using – bored or boring? Have a think for a minute before reading on. That´s right, because you´re putting it into a permanent state you are saying ´you are a boring person´. However if you say ´estoy aburrido´ you are saying ´I´m bored´. There are a few adjectives that work in that way so be careful, some of the most common are: listo: ser – clever, estar – ready, malo: ser – bad, estar – ill, rico: ser – rich, estar – tasty. As well as temporary situ-

ations we also use ESTAR for locations, whether temporary: el lapis está en la mesa or permanent Londres está en Inglaterra. This actually makes it easier for us to use because we are not trying to remember whether the location is a temporary one or not. So with every case of where something/someone is we use estar, but remember if we are saying where someone is from we use ser, so, estoy en la cocina, estoy en España, but soy de Inglaterra, eres de España. There are some idiomatic expressions that use estar, some of the most useful are: estar de pie – standing, estar de acuerdo – to be in agreement, estar en camino

– to be on the way, estar a gusto – to be comfortable/content with, estar a punto de – to be just about to, llegar a estar – to become. Try and think of some phrases you can use with the above expressions, remember all you do is change the verb to whoever you are talking about, for example, estoy de acuerdo – I agree, estoy a gusto en mi trabajo – I am happy with my job. So we have had a rundown of two of the most useful verbs in the language and hopefully you may have learnt a few new uses of them even if you have a good level of Spanish. Que tengas una buena semana, ¡hasta la próxima!

Why Are Dogs Scared of Fireworks?

Voting for Pet Idol 2015 has now come to a close. We are now counting the votes and will reveal the winners next week. We have been astounded by the number of votes received, and it is for that reason that there are no losers, because not one single animal or picture was not voted for. That said, we have got to give the prizes to somebody, and so once we calculate and check the figures with our adjudicators, the prize winners will be announced here and on the website, thecourier.es. There are some great prizes on offer too, like the Los Montesinos vets who are giving a 10 euro voucher, Eduardo Pets who are offering a free rabies voucher as a prize, as well as Tidy Paws and their 10 euro voucher for a pet hairdo, and of course the 1st prize is a 50 euro voucher to spend at the San Anton pet store and hospital

in Guardamar. Huge thanks to everybody for taking part and to those who voted. Rest assured, the competition will return again soon and it will be bigger, brighter and bolder than ever.

Do fireworks scare your dog? He’s not alone. While they’re fun for most humans, the loud, unexpected sounds of fireworks cause stress and anxiety for a lot of dogs. And there are of course plenty of fireworks here in Spain because of the various fiestas, but also the unpredictable explosion of bangers at any time of the year. Here are a list of things to know about why your dog gets anxious and what you can do to help. 1. It’s normal if your dog gets scared. “While we humans have learned to expect fireworks around fiesta times, the sound of fireworks can be quite startling for dogs,” says dog behaviour scientist Ragen T.S. McGowan. 2. After all, your dog has keen senses that make fireworks a more intense experience. Your dog’s acute hearing makes him more sensitive to the sounds of fireworks than you are. “Fireworks also produce an odour that dogs may be sensitive to,” McGowan said. 3. During fireworks, your dog experiences the same kind of startled response you do when you’re surprised by a loud noise. This may mean an increase in heart rate, a rush of adrenaline, and an increase in stress hormones circulating through the body. 4. For your dog, fireworks aren’t the same experience

as say a thunderstorm. Thunderstorms come with a lot of warning signs, like changes in barometric pressure and high winds, so dogs anticipate them. Since fireworks are sudden and occur less frequently than thunderstorms, dogs might be more intimidated by them. 5. There are plenty of dogs who aren’t afraid of fireworks. It might be because they’re naturally easy-going, or it might be because they were exposed to enough noises when they were young that they understand that fireworks aren’t a threat. 6. If you start early, you can help lower your dog’s sensitivity to the sound of fireworks. If you know there are going to be fireworks in your area, you can help prepare your dog by exposing him to recorded firework sounds. Note that this process takes months of effort that includes gradually increasing the volume while you reward your dog for keeping calm. It’s not a shortterm fix. 7. If you start really early, you might be able to desensitise your dog to a lot of loud noises. If you expose your dog to noises like fireworks, thunder, car horns and train whistles in a positive manner when he’s between 3 weeks and 3-months-old, he’s more likely to be unfazed by noises later in life. 8. No time? Create a spe-

cial area in your home where your dog can feel safe and secure during the noise. If your dog is basket trained then he may feel most secure in his basket or a corner area with a nice chew toy to occupy his time. Put the dog’ bed in a calm place during any fireworks, and try closing the windows and playing some music. 9. Help your dog feel happy during fireworks. Why not give your dog a special treat or his favourite toy? It might help to create positive associations with fireworks. 10. Calming wraps and clothes may help for some dogs, too. These work like swaddling does for infants – they make your dog feel secure during stressful situations. 11. The most important thing you can do is stay calm. “Making a big fuss around the dog only reassures him that there is a good reason to panic,” behaviourist McGowan said. “Dogs look

at us for reassurance so showing them that we are calm and relaxed is likely to help the dog understand that there is no real danger.” 12. Lead by example. Giving your dog cuddles could make it seem that you are fearful too. If you remain calm then you encourage them to remain calm. Dogs also learn from each other. If you have a friend who has a dog that is not afraid of fireworks, invite them round for the evening when the fiesta display is happening. Your friend's dog will help set the right example. A word of caution - learning by example can work both ways. If the visiting dog becomes anxious after observing your dog's fear, do not continue. 13. Tired Out. If your dog has been for a nice long walk and is physically and mentally tired out, they will be much more likely to settle in the evening and less likely to worry about the noise, lights and activity outside.

Tony Mayes - About Life

No Justice For Wronged Couple

I couldn’t help being disgusted by the story of the couple who had their baby taken away from them and saw it adopted after they were charged with child abuse - only to have charges against them dropped three years later. If ever there was a case of an appalling lack of justice this is it. Britain prides itself in having one of the most just and fairest justice systems in the world. Sadly a total lack of humanity displayed by Surrey social service department, medical staff and the justice system has totally failed this couple. Surrey County Council and the courts should move without any further delay to return the child to its rightful parents. Karrissa Cox and Richard Carter, of Guildford, faced assault charges after health staff found bruises on the baby and X-rays appeared to show fractures. The couple maintained their innocence for three years, but the adoption went ahead while the case continued against them. This is an appalling example of a council acting as judge, jury and executioner - prejudging the issue before it had been heard by the courts. It is also appalling on another level how on earth can it possibly take three years for a case to get to court? This is no

justice, it is a disgrace. If the government expects doctors to provide a 24/7 service to the public, it should also expect judges and barristers to get off their backsides and execute justice far more efficiently than they are presently doing - if it means evening and weekend courts, then so be it, after all, they're paid enough. And doctors involved need a massive kick up their backsides as well! In April 2012, the couple took their six-week-old baby to hospital after they spotted blood in the child's mouth. But hospital staff noticed bruising and marks on the child's body, and X-rays were carried out which a radiologist said showed healing fractures on the baby's limbs. The injuries were considered to be nonaccidental and the heartless bureaucratic machine swung into action. The child was first removed into foster care and then later adopted. During the court case, defence lawyers said the Xrays were consistent with rickets, and the bruising with von Willebrand's disease. Three weeks into the trial, the prosecution said one of their own medical experts could not be sure that X-rays showed fractures and therefore it would not be possible

for a jury to reach a conclusion. Why couldn’t this socalled medical expert say that three years ago? I hope the couple sue him to hell and back and so he never gets the chance to ruin some other couple's lives. They plan to appeal against their child's adoption, but legal experts say it will be a long uphill struggle for them to get their own child back. If ever there was a case for David Cameron to personally intervene and get this case fasttracked, this is it. Can you possibly imagine how terrible it must be, firstly to be wrongly accused of harming your own child and then see him or her permanently taken away from you without even the chance to clear your name in court before that decision is made? The council say they always put the interest of the child first in considering such cases, which is justifiable, but if that policy is taken to its illogical extreme conclusion, then every youngster with a bruise would be removed from their parents "just in case". Why am I so incensed over this appalling case? Because the situation happened to me when my younger son was aged about four. His mother and I knew something was wrong

with him when he would have screaming fits and became uncontrollable. One day we took him to the zoo and had a lovely day but he got overtired. He slept in the car on the way home but when we arrived he had one of his 'turns' and threw himself around the kitchen, hitting his face on a cupboard door handle and he too had blood in his mouth from the injury. I was given the third degree in hospital and it was a dreadful experience. My son was eventually diagnosed as having an allergy to dairy products and some fruits but it took a long time to get to the bottom of the problem, like the Guildford couple with their baby. I wish them well in their battle to be reunited with their child and hopefully some lawyer with an interest in human rights will take on the case free of charge. Last week acres of UK media time were given up to the news item of the century. Listening to it, anyone would have thought the entire nation was going to be turned upside down and impending disaster was about to happen. What was all the fuss about? The introduction of a 5p charge on plastic bags in supermarkets! This should have happened years ago, why

England has followed limply behind other parts of the UK beats me, and of course we’ve had this here in Spain for the last five years, and nobody has lost any sleep over it! Imposing a 5p charge is fair enough, although I think it's not enough money. But if we really want to have a cleaner world not filled with rubbish everywhere there is a much more productive answer. If you're my age you will remember buying bottles of pop and on the label was a note which said if you returned the bottle the shopkeeper would give you 3d (that's three old pence, worth just over one penny in today's money). Tesco introduced a fantastic clean-up campaign a few years ago where people could earn the store's green points by returning cans and plastic bottles, with one enterprising couple even paying for their wedding by touring the streets "Wombleing". It didn't surprise me the initiative didn't last long - it probably cost too much money for Tesco. So, why can't the government get us all collecting and recycling rubbish by paying us to do it? At a stroke, instead of kids throwing their rubbish in parks, streets and the beach you would see them taking cans, bottles and bags back to depots to supplement their pocket money. It's a win, win. Among all the puerile rubbish reported about the introduction of the 5p charge, one story stood out. A shopper was accosted by supermarket security staff and accused of theft after she used a basket to carry her groceries to her car to avoid paying the new 5p carrier bag charge. She had been shopping for her lunch at a Tesco Extra store and decided not to pay for a plastic bag as she had one in her car. However, as she walked out of the branch with her purchased shopping in the basket she was confronted by two guards who accused her of stealing. Another shopper filmed the incident

in the shop's car park including the moment one guard grabbed her basket after accusing her of trying to steal it. The security workers explained to her that the new 5p charge for bags had seen a rise in the number of people using baskets to carry goods to their cars, with some taking them home. 'I hadn't even got to my car when the security guards chased me and then grabbed my basket and wouldn't let go,' she said. Apparently there have been many other similar incidents all because of the 5p bag charge. Is it rocket science to get people to keep a few re-usable bags in the boots of their cars and get them out when they go shopping? “Every little helps”, as Tesco might say if they used some common sense! Is it crazy that a 77-yearold man was allowed to drive a bus which ploughed into the front of a Coventry supermarket killing two people? The bus company said: "No driver we employ is allowed behind the wheel of our buses without us being satisfied that they are fully qualified, safe and meet all necessary legal requirements. In this case, our driver has many years' experience and has also passed a mandatory annual medical." The driver was a former mayor and from reports was an all-round good chap. That is all very well, but I challenge anyone to prove to me that someone aged 77 has as quick a reaction as someone say in his 40s, and can anyone suggest that a person aged 77 is as unlikely to suffer a sudden heart attack or stroke than someone aged 40? The question is whether the degree of risk too great for a person aged 77 to be driving a public service vehicle. Oh yes, it's UK government policy to allow people to continue working beyond retirement age, but surely not in jobs such as bus, train or lorry drivers and other occupations where people can be put at increased risk.

GARDENING IN THE AUTUMN WITH PRO POOLS & GARDENS

As we are now in October, this is the last month of the year that your garden plants should need feeding before this winter. It is important to ensure you give feed which is specific to the types of plants you have. Fruit trees for example which are not ever green (Cherry, Apple, Grape, Pear) shouldn’t be fed as they no longer require feeding, as this time of

year is when the trees drop their leaves and will require pruning back to ensure they will grow well in the next season. Citrus fruits (Lemon, Orange, Mandarin) will need feeding and Iron in the soil for them to stay healthy through the winter period. They don’t require pruning this time of year, better in February or March just before the tree is about to flower.

Tropical fruits such as Mango, Papaya, and Litchi should ideally be covered to protect the flowers from the cool wind and rain. If you use an irrigation system for your plants, it should now be set up for the winter time, ideally every other day now and twice a week in November, December and January. Don’t forget to check the battery, ideally batteries will last a year,

but best to change every six months. Your grass in your garden will stay short now over the winter months and the watering will need to be reduced right down. There are some beautiful flowering plants to give your garden that autumn feel such as Chrysanthemum, Rudbeckia, Calluna, flowering in red, Yellow, white and purple.

POOLS In our part of Spain we don’t need to winterize our pools as you would in a cold climate as there is little risk of the pipes freezing. It’s always a risk leaving pools running when unattended incase of blockages or leaks, however if they are turned off, they will discolor. How bad, will depend on how long they are left. If your pool is left running and the

auto filler is off or does not have an no auto filler, skimmers should be turned off and chemical levels raised. Community pools must be maintained and cannot be left as chemical levels must be correct all year round as some people do swim in the very cold wate For more information, contact Pro Pools & Gardens today. You Need Spanish Insurance

Don´t put of for tomorrow what should be done today. There has never been a better time to get covered with fantastic end of year prices offers ! Our heath care in Spain never stops changing. Previously non working Brits in Spain who were under the age of 65 were able to pass on their health care costs to the UK Treasury. As part of cost saving plans by the NHS, the UK will no longer have to reimburse other European countries for health costs of Brits who are under pensionable age and of course Spain is not in a position to provide free heath care to people not paying into the Spanish system. No doctor should ever turn anyone away in a life threatening situation BUT we are hearing more and more horror stories. Horrendously large medical bills are landing in the post box and people ARE being turned away with non life threatening complaints if they are not able to prove their entitlement for treatment in Spain . Changes in legislation, in both the Spanish and the UK

national heath service will not only effect jobless UK expats. Cut backs by both the UK and Spain are hitting working expats and Spanish alike. Not only do we now have tighter rules and controls on the use of the E111 and SIP cards. The cut backs across the board in the Spanish national heath service and ever growing waiting lists are forcing both the working and retired to look for alternative costly private treatments. Don't get caught out. You wouldn't set up a home insurance and then ask to open a claim for a robbery that happened the previous week. The same rule applies to heath insurance, private

heath insurance is not going to cover the treatment for the problem you discovered yesterday. At Spanish Insurance we can provide cover for certain pre existing conditions. We will always take the time to assess each individual case to provide the best cover possible. Private heath insurance is not as expensive as you may think and putting off the arrangement of your heath care until next month can lead to some very serious false economy! Call Spanish Insurance for a heath insurance tailor made for you : 966 731 691. Please See our advert Page 10 of the main part of The Courier.

Spy in the House – Whatson´s Choice

The name´s Whatson… James Whatson… Do, do, do, DOO, do, do, do. Do, do, do, doo, do, do, do. DO DO, dooo, DO DO. Well, it isn´t really, it´s just Whatson, but I didn´t want to be left out. The new James Bond film looks amazing and I hear that Daniel Craig might be hanging up his Bond boots and moving on to other things, so there might be an opening soon for a smooth, suave, sophisticated young television star to take over. I mean me, obviously. It could be my big break onto the silver screen. Anyway, enough dreaming, I´d better explain why. Jonathan Ross is back this week for another series of

his chat show on ITV. But before he´s joined by his celebrity friends he takes us on a tour of the new Bond film, Spectre. He takes us all around the world to show us some of the filming locations, and he also shows us some of

the amazing cars that have starred in Bond films. A fascinating insight into the world of Bond is promised. Oh, I just realised something. I can´t drive! On the subject of cars though, BBC Two are going to show us how they´re

made. Not just your usual tour of a factory sort of show, oh no, this one is going to be completely different, because it is live! For two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday, the show takes us on a tour of the MINI plant in Oxford, where a new car can roll off the production line in just 24 hours. They also visit Germany and look at driverless cars. Ah, there we go. Problem solved. I don´t need to drive. Anyway, that´s it for another week. The joke of the week was a bit tricky, but then I stumbled across this little gem. What do you call James Bond in the bath? Bubble 07. Tatty bye my friends, tatty bye.

Welcome Back Jonathan

Saturday night on ITV is set to be dominated by the return of two screen

favourites. Ahead of the first episode of the ninth series of his chat show, lifelong

James Bond fan Jonathan Ross gains exclusive access to the cast and crew of the latest 007 blockbuster Spectre in a one-off special for ITV on Saturday evening. He explores the enduring success of the Bond films as he chats with current Bond Daniel Craig, latest Bond villain Christoph Waltz, and Miss Moneypenny herself – Naomie Harris. As well as looking ahead to the new film, the show celebrates the history of the spy series as Jonathan takes a look at the

classic cars, impressive gadgets, evil villains and beautiful Bond girlss. The programme features exclusive behind-the scenes filming at locations all over the world, including Mexico, Rome, Austria, Morocco and London, offering a unique insight into the glamorous world of 007. James Bond’s cars have always featured prominently in the series. Jonathan takes a look at the beautiful Aston Martin DB10 which has been specially designed for the latest film. Speed will be important as he has to hurry back to the studio as his Saturday night chat show returns for a ninth series. Having made the move to ITV back in 2011, Jonathan has cemented his place as one of the UK’s most revered interviewers, securing a diverse range of guests from Hollywood A-listers and musicians to sporting heroes and the cream of today’s comic talent. Appearing on the opening show this week are US action hero Vin Diesel, whose Fast and Furious series of films is one of the most successful of all time. He will no doubt be discussing the most recent and highest grossing instalment of the series, Furious 7 – now the fifth biggest film ever – which featured the final starring role of the late Paul Walker. Also on the show are comedy partners Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, who are celebrating 25 years of working together with a tour later this month. Sheffield-born Olympic gold medallist Jessica Ennis-Hill discusses motherhood and her preparations for Rio 2016, while Tom Jones chats about his new album and autobiography as well as performing live in the studio. Will the no-nonsense Welshman be able to hold back as the subject of his exit from The Voice inevitably rears its head?

Building Cars Live Buckle up for an incredible journey into the fascinating secret world of the car factory, which will see BBC Two getting under the bonnet of the UK car industry. Every 20 seconds a brand new car rolls off the production line somewhere in Britain and James May, Kate Humble and Ant Anstead are live behind the scenes at one of the biggest and busiest car factories in the country - the MINI Plant in Oxford. Over two nights they’ll reveal the science, engineering and people that keep us all on the road and see a car built from start to finish in a little over 24 hours. Building Cars Live will also step outside the factory to explore the evolution of global mass production, bust the myth that British manufacturing is dead and see how design becomes reality. In this first programme on Tuesday, James makes friends with an army of diligent robots, Kate heads to Norway to discover why the electric car is king of the Norwegian road and Ant explores the history and heritage of one of the most iconic cars ever built. With access all areas on the factory floor, the team will see exactly how a car is born - a car that tomorrow will be driven off the line, ready for life on the open road. In the second live programme on Wednesday, James races against the clock on the production line and embraces the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen. Kate gets to the bottom of how manufacturers test car seats for mass production and Ant heads to Germany to put his faith in a driverless car on the autobahn. Inside the factory the team reveal what it takes to build 1,000 different cars a day and are live as a car that started being built yesterday drives off the production line for the very first time.

Pick Me! Pick Me! sees an entire audience of colourful characters compete for the attention of host Stephen Mulhern. If he picks them to play they could take home cash, or a brilliant prize, but only if they come out on top in a dramatic, often hilarious game of knowledge, judgement and bluff. Expect lying leprechauns, phoney pirates and bluffing babies, as an ever-changing panel of players are challenged to come up with convincing answers to some of the toughest questions on television. But can contestants spot who's been given the right answer, and who's just made something up on the spot? In the first episode on Monday, hoping to win big are blonde-bombshell ‘Marilyn Monroe’, an Elvis Presleylookalike called Daniel from Essex, Tara the vampire, CJ the naked butler and cowboy Jay and his inflatable horse. As well as money, amongst the prizes up for grabs today are a luxury break in Cornwall, an exhilarating tandem-bungee jump and a magnificent seven-night holiday in Madeira. However, it isn’t long before the lies and bluffs start to cause ructions, with contestant Alyisha declaring: ‘It just shows you who you can trust nowadays!’ Will Elvis be all shook up? Will Jay and his blow-up horse be galloping off to the Cornish coast? Find out as the audience shouts...Pick Me!

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Things have gone utterly crazy in Autumn TV Land because some nice person has pressed a big button, and suddenly new and returning shows are coming at us at all directions, with finding the time to watch everything a real problem. Loads of the stuff is pouring out of America, and I have to say that so far, so very good indeed! Homeland is that rare example of a US show that died and then was totally reborn as a smart spy show last year, and the signs look good for season five based on last Sunday’s opener on Channel Four. Our loose cannon of a CIA operative, Carrie, no longer works for the firm but for a shady looking philanthropist in Berlin, and she has a work colleague as a new guy in her life. All happy then? No, forget it! She’s getting wrapped up with

Rich Autumn Pickings

some Middle Eastern baddies (but of course), and we got a great scene when she met with exboss Saul(scene pictured), and the ice didn’t melt at all, as they snarled at each other for a glorious minute. And why is Quinn an “off the books” killer? A real tense start to the new run. Homeland opened up with a great cyber-hacking scene and that kind of business takes centrestage in the new CSI franchise show that is CSICyber on Channel Five. No surprise that Patricia Arquette steals things leading an FBI cybercrime unit and the plots are original, though you do have to concentrate a bit to follow what is going on. It’s many times better than the awful main CSI final episode a few weeks ago, but the Yanks are finding it slow going for their taste, so Ted Danson

Aries March 21-April 20 Recent tensions in a close alliance ease from this weekend, so do not look for problems where there are none, or misread someone’s intentions. Tuesday’s New Moon in peace-loving, diplomatic Libra shows farreaching changes in a situation that preoccupies you. It also stresses the importance of being flexible about the future.

Taurus April 21-May 21 The planetary pattern in the week ahead suggests that you are on the threshold of some kind of breakthrough, so do not let an unexpected sequence of events throw you off your stride, or make you feel unsure of where you stand with someone close. If you are true to your real needs and feelings, you can leave recent problems in the past.

Gemini May 22-June 21 Your home life and your deeper, long-term bonds with others are under lucky stars this week, when optimistic Jupiter aligns with Pluto, the planet that rules new beginnings. The New Moon also helps you to overcome misunderstandings that have undermined your confidence in recent weeks. All you need to do is open up to change.

Cancer June 22-July 23 Making someone see life from your angle may have seemed a challenge lately. But with easygoing, optimistic Jupiter now beaming down on your close bonds with others, all that is due to change. In fact, all you need to do to solve a recent problem is stand back and take a more relaxed and confident approach. The rest will follow.

as CSI character, DB Russell, will pop up to liven up things for season two. Worth watching though, even to check up on the ageing process of ex-Dawson’s Creek star, James Van Der Beek. Is he really now 38-yearsold? “Zombies!”, I hear Sergei the Meerkat cry in some of the Corrie sponsorship bits, and he would have had a field-day counting thousands of them (helped by dear old CGI technology) on a simply astonishing first double series six episode of

The Walking Dead on Fox UK. It was like watching a big movie as leader Rick worked out a ruse to blast the blood suckers all to smithereens in a quarry not far from his group’s current safe haven. It was so in your face that I’m sure blood oozed out of my TV, but it was also about working out once again how far Andrew Lincoln’s brilliantly played character would go, prompted by the welcome return (from season one and three) of Morgan: - a man with a conscience, portrayed by Lincoln’s fel-

Leo July 24-August 23 This week’s alignment between Jupiter, the planet of success, which is now travelling through your chart’s financial sector, and the wealth planet, Pluto, is due to help you reach a new, ambitious goal. Do not hedge your bets this time. If you are confident about the future, you can overcome resistance to your plans from those who count.

Virgo August 24-September 23 The importance of being open to new people and ideas is strongly stressed this week. New horizons beckon, so do not let uncertainty about the future make you miss a chance to usher in a more fulfilling era. With the zodiac’s luckiest planet, Jupiter, in Virgo, the only thing you can do wrong is sell yourself too short, so put your real interests first.

Libra September 24-October 23 Do not try to plan too far ahead this week, or put others under pressure. The New Moon in your sign ushers in a new era in your private life, so take each situation as it comes. You could find that someone is prepared to come halfway to meet you. Let them make the opening move.

Scorpio October 24-November 22 With so much action in your chart’s most sensitive and psychic zone this week, you have a sixth sense for coming trends, and for how to handle colleagues. It also seems an unexpected setback could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. You will make the right decisions if you relax and trust your judgment, instead of listening to advice.

low-Brit, the top class Lennie James, who despite all his UK work, lives in Los Angeles. I’m not a natural horror fan, but The Walking Dead really is a study of humanity and relationships, and over five years on from the first series, it continues to deliver on a grand level. The two big superhero shows, The Flash and Arrow returned on successive nights on Sky One this week, and with the same producers, they complement each other well. The Flash has a lighter touch as well as what appeared to be a helpful person from a parallel Earth in the last scene of the opener whilst Arrow into season four has had something of a relaunch with an excellent opener that also raised the humour level, after some pretty emotional episodes in the last run.

Arrow this season will also welcome a Brit who was a major character in Holby City not that long ago to be a new baddie for Oliver Queen to face off to. No… it’s not Tina Hobley! Is Downton Abbey boss Julian Fellowes playing with us over the fate of Earl Grantham in this final series? It appears utterly obvious, what with his spluttering and indigestion, that Hugh Bonneville’s character is set to be bumped off, but if so, why make it so clear, unless we have a red herring thrown at us? By the way, are you of the same opinion that you couldn’t give a single jot about the most boring Downton plotline ever, namely the fate of the village hospital. It’s only served to waste the wonderful talents of Maggie Smith and Penelope Wilton in a mire of total inconsequence.

Sagittarius November 23-December 21 Changes in the company you keep are on the horizon, so be open to the possibilities around you and prepared to go along with what occurs. An unexpected conversation could be the start of a new friendship. It could also point you in a new direction. Do not be afraid to break free from a situation that you have outgrown.

Capricorn December 22 - January 20 A powerful, week-long link between Jupiter, the Lord of Luck, and Pluto in your sign is due to help you get considerably closer to a very personal goal this week. A problem that has held you back can now be solved and left behind you, so be proactive and determined while the stars are on your side. Travel and romance are also linked this week.

Aquarius January 21 - February 19 An unexpected piece of news could throw you off your stride early in the week and make you wonder if you should change course. Do not give up on your current goal, as yet. Feedback and support from someone close is due to help you turn the situation to your own advantage, so do not try to stand alone. Plan to socialise on Thursday.

Pisces February 20 - March 20 With Jupiter, the planet of good fortune and success, travelling through the area of your skies that rules your close relationships with others, better times now lie ahead, so let go of recent doubts and focus on the opportunities around you. The New Moon also helps you to reach a deeper understanding with a loved one or close friend.

Cartoonify Your Living Space If you fancy a change from the more traditional looking furniture, a quick trip to your local self-assembly outlet might offer a modern replacement, but there is an alternative that transforms your room into something quite unique. British artist Richard Woods traverses the boundaries between art, architecture and design in an ongoing examination of the relationship between the functional and the ornamental. Woods has said that his vibrant colour palette is inspired by his childhood memories of his parents’ home in 1970s England, where he was surrounded by “plasticky” colours and garish, narrative wallpapers.

Okay, so an alternative sideboard or dining set might be a start, suppose you want to go a whole lot further? You could transform your home entirely into a cartoon replica. As part of a 1997 promotion, Fox, Pepsi, and Kaufman and Broad homebuilders sponsored a contest that gave people the chance to win a fully-furnished Simpsons house. No detail was left out, from Duff beer cans to the print on the kitchen curtains. Unfortunately the winner opted to take $75,000 in cash instead of the house (tax would have been payable on the house by the way, but not the cash), and Bart’s humble yet colourful abode was converted to a more-or-less nor-

mal living space and sold in 2001, though fans with sharp eyes may still be able to spot the Treehouse of Terror in the backyard. Or how about the modest but charming domicile Carl Fredricksen improbably flew to South America in the film Up? It isn’t in Paradise Falls however it’s in Utah, constructed, with Disney’s permission, by Bangerter Homes. Fittingly, the home was purchased by a couple of Disney fanatics who had been searching for a place with the Up flavour in California, but were having trouble finding something in their price range. Carl and Ellie’s house was a steal at $400,000. Added bonus: one

of the basement bedrooms is decked out to look like Andy’s room from Toy Story. Finally, if you fancy “life in plastic”, (which is “fantastic” by the way), then a real life Barbie girl needs to be looking to the area dominated by another doll, Malibu, To celebrate Barbie’s 50th birthday in 2009, Mattel enlisted designer Jonathan Adler to help create a real-life Malibu beach house. Sadly, the contents of the house were dismantled but some of it was made into a suite at the Palms hotel in Las Vegas, so while you can’t buy the furnished beach houae of your dreams, you can still get the Barbie experience and for a fraction of the cost.

Active Surfaces Supporting DEBRA

Everybody´s favourite safety flooring company, Active Surfaces, are pleased to announce that they have formed a collaboration to support DEBRA, the charity for children with butterfly skin, as their surfaces are a key factor in keeping children´s play areas safe. They will shortly be hosting a special event and charity auction, which will be held at Victoria´s Tea Room in Almoradí, located on Calle Pablo Picasso no 5 (Close to the Ayuntamiento / Town Square), where TKO´s Dennis Christian jumped at the chance to help out by turning auctioneer for the day. We will bring you more details about the event nearer the time and of course on TKO, as Active Surfaces are the proud sponsor of the Who´s on TKO Mystery Voice competition, where you can win a cash prize just for

guessing who is saying a short phrase. Meanwhile, if you´re still wondering what Active Surfaces are about, they provide and install one of the most popular additions to pool and play areas, “Wet Lay Rubber” surfaces. After years of experience laying this product in the U.K., the company thought it high time the product was brought to the Spanish market, where the heat can often lead to hardened surfaces, and solid tiles and concrete are often the norm. Unlike those hard and slippy surfaces, the flooring installed by Active Surfaces is a solid coloured granule composition which will leave a smooth textured surface which is soft and cool to walk on in all weathers. Prior to installation the surveyor will discuss meeting your individual needs and requirements, in detail, and

according to your budget, making sure the right choice is made and ensuring the product ticks all the boxes. The surface itself has been independently tested in accordance with Critical Fall Height (BS EN 1177), Resistance to Abrasive Wear (BS 7188), Slip Resistance BS 7188), Resistance to Indentation (BS 7188), and Flammability (BS 7188) standards, so you are sure that quality is key. The surface installed is environmentally friendly, hard wearing, impact absorbing and easy to clean and is suitable for a wide range of different areas, including pool and play areas, golf courses, gardens, driveways, football pitches and sports grounds and the home. You can actually see a sample in a live display at Victoria´s Tea Room in Almoradí, so you can see for yourself what it´s like when you attend the charity auction. What´s more, Active Surfaces will back up your purchase with a 5 year guarantee against fair wear and tear, so your installation is all set to last well into the future. For more information you can visit their website at, www. activesurfaces.es, or call 662 679 467, and keep listening to TKO radio on 90.8 or 91.9 fm for the latest special offers.

Best British Recipes Roast saddle of lamb with mint sauce

Food & Drink Tequila cocktails you need to try now

Desserts

Pears & Chocolate

2 x 410g cans pear halves in syrup, 100g chocolate, chopped into small chunks, 8 scoops vanilla ice cream, 2 tbsp chopped hazelnuts. Directions Drain the pears over a pan. Divide between 4 dessert glasses. Boil the syrup on a high heat until reduced and thick. Take off the heat and stir in the chocolate until melted. Add 2 scoops of ice cream onto each portion of pears and pour over the hot choc sauce. Top with the chopped nuts.

Nectarine & Pistachio layers

50g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs, 25g porridge oats, 50g demerara sugar, 25g shelled pistachios, finely chopped, 500g fresh low-fat custard, 500g 0% fat Greek yogurt, 2 tbsp maple syrup, 4 ripe nectarines, stoned, sliced Directions Heat oven to 180C/160C, Mix breadcrumbs, porridge oats, sugar and pistachios together and spread out in an even layer on a baking parchmentlined baking tray. Bake for 8 mins, stirring half way, until crisp and golden brown. Cool Gradually beat the custard into the yogurt in a mixing bowl. Sweeten with the syrup or honey.

Saddle cooked on the bone is unusual so ask your butcher in advance. Don’t let them bone and roll it as this method produces a better result. Serves 6-8. Whole lamb saddle around 1.5kg, oil or goose fat for frying, demerera sugar 200g, water 200ml, malt vinegar 200ml, mint medium bunch. Heat the oven to 200C/gas mark 6. Score the lamb on the skin side and season well. Using a large frying pan on a medium heat, fry the lamb all over and then

leave skin side down for 10 mins (you may have to lower the heat) to render the fat under the skin. The colour should be mahogany. Put the whole joint in the oven for 20 minutes, then turn the oven down to 150C/gas mark 2 and cook

for a further 35 minutes. Take the meat out of the oven and leave to rest for 30 minutes.

Now take the fillets off. Run a knife down the backbone until you get to the rib and then run your knife horizontally using the ribs to guide you. Do this on both sides and you should have 2 long fillets. Season well again and carve each fillet into 3-4 pieces. Serve with your favourite greens and potatoes. To make the mint sauce, boil the sugar and water together for 10 minutes. Leave to cool completely. Weigh the sugar syrup and add roughly the same amount of malt vinegar. Now chop the mint and add to the sauce (it will take plenty of mint).

The Margarita Nothing says sunny days and happy times better than the sharp and spiky Margaritas. One sip and I am back in California. Chips and guacamole are mandatory, as is some suitable mariachi music. Wipe a wedge of lime around the rim of a tumbler. Dip the rim into some sea salt. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add 30ml lime juice, 30ml Cointreau, 60ml white tequila (I favour Herradura). Shake, shake, shake until bitingly cold. Then fill the tumbler with fresh ice and strain the drink over the top. Squeeze a wedge of lime into the glass, and toss it in too. Stir and drink. Tequila Sunrise - How much more rock’n’roll can a drink be? aThe Rolling Stones purportedly got through their ’72 American tour on a lot of

them and The Eagles named a song after it. Yeah, baby! Fill a tall glass with ice. Add 50ml white tequila. Then carefully pour in 90ml fresh orange juice. DO NOT STIR. Add 10ml grenadine. The grenadine should sink to the bottom of the glass … giving you … a sunrise effect. Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry. Sip to side one of Sticky Fingers. The Mexican Negroni This twist on the classic works very well with tequila and makes a slightly sweeter drink. Fill a tumbler with a couple of large cubes of ice. Add 60ml white tequila, 20 ml Aperol and 20ml sweet red vermouth (I favour Riserva Carlo Alberto) . Add a dash of orange bitters. Stir well and serve garnished with a twist of orange.

Best Soups Around Proper homemade stock boosts a soup, and much more

Beetroot, fennel seed and chilli soup with ginger creme fraiche This has such depth of flavour that I’d happily serve it as a fancy starter. 6 medi-

um beetroots, 3-4 floury potatoes (about 500g), 3 tbsp olive oil, 2 small onions, peeled and chopped, 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1-2 small dried chill-

ies (or ½ tsp dried chilli flakes), to taste, 2 fat cloves garlic, peeled and chopped, Salt and freshly ground black pepper, 1.5 litres chicken or vegetable stock. For the creme fraiche sauce. 250ml creme fraiche, 1 large knob ginger, The zest of 1 lime, plus half its juice. Top and tail the beetroots. Peel the potatoes and dice, Heat the oil in a large casserole over a medium heat, then add the onions, fennel seeds and chilli. Sweat for about eight minutes, until the onion is soft, then add the garlic, potatoes, beetroot and beetroot stalks. Cook, stirring, for about five minutes, then season generously, pour in the stock and leave to simmer gently for half an hour. Blitz with a stick blender, then adjust the consistency: add water to loosen or reduce further to thicken. Finely grate the peeled ginger into the creme fraiche, add the lime zest and juice, and season with a pinch of salt. The soup is lovely served right away with a dollop of the cream mix swirled on top, but it improves with time – preferably overnight, if you can wait that long. Mostly, I can’t.

Weight gain in teens may be linked to late nights Teenagers’ body mass index increasing with every hour they stay up during the school week

Staying up late could be associated with weight gain in teenagers, according to a study. Researchers in the US found that each additional hour adolescents stayed up during the school week has been associated with an increase of 2.1 points in body mass index.

There are suggestions that the results – observed in a sample of more than 3,000 participants – highlight that bedtimes could have a role to play in weight management. Although BMI (body mass index) does not distinguish between lean muscle and

fat, and the researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, and Columbia University did not measure waist circumference, the study will raise further concerns about the reported relationship between lack of sleep and obesity. The authors said they

were surprised to find that the relationship between bedtime and BMI – calculated using an individual’s height and weight – was not significantly changed or moderated by total sleep time, exercise frequency or screen time. However, the relationship between bedtime and BMI was significantly reduced with the inclusion of fast food consumption. The paper said this made the case for future research on the effect of later bedtimes upon dietary habits. Lead author Lauren Asarnow, said: “The results are important because they highlight adolescent bedtimes, not just total sleep time, as a potential target for weight management concurrently and in the transition to adulthood.”

The study incorporated three waves of data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health between 1994 and 2009, with the youngest participants aged 12 and the eldest 32. Sleep and circadian variables were determined via self-reported measures at all three waves and investigators measured height and weight at each stage. The authors believe their research to be the first to investigate the relationship between bedtime and BMI longitudinally in an observational study. A study by the University of Bristol, published in March, found that if you

need a lie-in at weekends to make up for lack of sleep in the week, you may be at risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes. As well as lack of sleep being linked to obesity, night shift work has also been linked to being severely overweight, because sleeping during the day burns fewer calories than at night. Experts suggest that a mismatch between the body’s internal circadian clock and sleep patterns can disrupt normal metabolism.

Do you need the flu vaccine? The winter season is here again, and with it comes more incidence of colds and flu. The winter season is also the time when flu shots are given mainly to elderly people and those with chronic diseases especially lung disorders. The unspoken truth is that there is no scientific evidence to justify the use of vaccines to protect the body against the flu. In a recent interview, Dr Rost, a former vice president of the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, exposed the bribery, corruption and scientific data manipulations that lead to the manufacture of vaccines and other drugs. Flu vaccines do not work because the flu virus is continuously mutating into different strains. And this makes it impossible to predict the type

of virus that will cause the next season's flu. Some studies have shown that flu vaccines protect less than 20% of recipients. However, the real danger of flu vaccines is in the damage it does to the body. Flu vaccines contain chemicals that are known to cause severe inflammation and damage to the body. They are produced from the tissues of dead animals and contain foreign animal proteins as well as toxic chemicals including formaldehyde, aluminium salts and a preservative that contains toxic levels of mercury. These foreign proteins and chemicals when injected into the body, cause intense inflammatory reactions. The diagnostic scans performed at MedB clinic reveals that people

who recently receive flu vaccines show intense inflammation and degeneration of nearly all the systems of the body, especially the immune system. Rather than trying to boost your immune system with flu vaccines, you can achieve much better results using natural remedies. And while you may still suffer from flu after taking natural remedies, it will run its course in days and not weeks and months. A healthy diet is key to boosting the immune system, and should comprise of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats and oils. Drinking at least 1.5 litres of water a day will help the detox system flush out toxins that are the underlying cause of inflammation in the

body. One of the most important nutrients for the immune system is Vitamin D, of which the sun is the best source. The early morning or late evening is usually the best time to catch the sun. Powerful supplements that help improve the immune system are Reishi and Colostrum. Reishi can stimulate the immune system when this is necessary, or even suppress a hyperactive immune system if also necessary. Colostrum contains antibodies and other proteins that can provide immediate protection against microbes. Before you go for that flu shot, remember that there is no proof that it works, and that you have an alternative way to improve your immune system.

I’m 65 years, and in the last 20 years I’ve had worsening pain in my left calf. The pain is not always there but appears when I walk for a short while. I also have pain in my hips occasionally, but not in any of my other joints. I´ll be happy to hear your opinion.

Q A

In my experience when people have complained of the same problem, our diagnostic scan has revealed problems with the blood vessels of the legs. And usually the problem we detect is narrowing and hardening of the arteries. And sometimes this appears with thrombophlebitis or inflammation of the veins as well as inflammation of the tiny arteries of the legs. Atherosclerosis, which is another name for the narrowing or hardening of the arteries occurs when there is a build-up of plaque in the walls of arteries. This buildup eventually leads to the

narrowing of arteries, which causes a restriction in blood flow. Without adequate blood supply, our organs become starved of oxygen, and this triggers a chain reaction of problems. In your case, the narrowing of the arteries of the calf will limit blood flow to the muscles of the calf, which in turn will cause inadequate oxygen supply. Without adequate oxygen, the muscles produce large quantities of lactic acid, and this is what leads to pain. Furthermore, plaque deposits restrict the flexibility of blood vessels, making them less able to cope with variations in blood pressure and this results in high blood pressure. Therefore, It is

important that you keep an eye on your blood pressure. Atherosclerosis can affect any of the arteries in the body, and if a lot of arteries become affected, the cardiovascular system may become compromised. Hardening of the arteries is also a common cause of many hip joint problems when the arteries of the hips are affected. Very commonly, hardening of the arteries will occur together with arthritis – inflammation of the joints. Serrapeptase is a natural enzyme that can prevent or treat atherosclerosis. Serrapeptase is found in bacteria living inside the silkworm. Studies have shown that serrapeptase can dis-

solve plaque and other unwanted tissue in the body. At our clinic, we have noticed that patients who have taken serrapeptase for a few weeks, notice a reduction in blood pressure. Also, people with atherosclerosis in the arteries of the brain also notice clearing of head fog within weeks of taking serrapeptase. Of course, your problem could be caused by other factors, and your best option is to have a full body diagnostic scan. But in the absence of a scan, I believe serrapeptase will be very very helpful. For a full body scan, call MedB Clinic: 965071745, 966189074

Elderly falls may not caused by fraility Contact@medb.es

Family members and care providers should not rush to judgment and think falls are a sign of fraility and mental decline A fall at home is often the final decider for family members when considering whether their elderly relatives should go into care. Researchers found that minor ailments like urinary tract infections, which can cause low blood pressure and dizziness, account for up to 45 per cent of painful

Website: www.medb.es

stumbles. And they suggest that family members, care givers and healthcare providers shouldn't rush to judgement about the cause of a fall, particularly in older people, as they might just be under the weather. "Over the years I've been struck by the fact that some of the more serious infections I treated were in people who came to the hospital because they fell," said lead investigator Dr Farrin Manian MPH. "Even though many of the patients had vague early signs of an infection, such as weakness, or lethargy, it was the fall that brought them in."

Researchers analysed 161 patients who went to the emergency room because they fell and were subsequently diagnosed with a coexisting infection. Of those, 44 per cent had a urinary tract infection, 39 per cent had a bloodstream infection, 23 per cent had a respitory infection and nine per cent had an infection of the heart valve. Falls in elderly people is one of the leading causes of death in the over 75s due to complications caused by

fractures. The charity Age UK has estimated 7,000 lives could be saved in the over 65s each year if widespread exercise programmes were implemented to prevent hip fractures from falls. A previous study in Australia also suggested that people who were depressed or taking antidepressants were 50 per cent more likely to fall than those in good mental health. One class of antidepressants seemed to increase the risk of a fall even more, with a 66 per cent increase in falls amongst those on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Exercise, tai chi and yoga have all been shown to prevent falls for older people. The new findings also suggest that while these falls may be more common in the elderly, they shouldn't be overlooked in younger people: 20 percent of patients in the study were younger than 65.

ADVICE: Robin wanted to know how to get the pound sign ADVICE: Mark wanted to remove the adverts from his Skype home screen - £ - on a Spanish keyboard

Q

Hi Mark, Skype is a free program and as such has to make money from somewhere, it does generate an income via paid for calls to land line and mobile phones but also some of the revenue comes from pay per click advertising – there is no option within the latest version of skype to turn off the adverts I´m afraid. There is a hack available here… http://community.skype.com/t5/Windows-desktop-client/Tutorial-How-to-disable-Skypeadvertisements/td-p/3316902 ..that you could try if they are really bugging you.

Hi Richard, I have a new (Spanish) laptop and although there are keys for $ and for € there is not one for pounds sterling. I believe there is a way to produce the required symbol by using a combination of keys. Please advise. Thanks Robin

Hi Robin the ALT code for the UK pound sign is 0163, so to use this you hold down the ALT key on the keyboard, type in the number 0163 and then release the ALT key, you will then have your pound sign.

Hi Richard, could tell me how to stop adverts appearing in my skype page, also what webcam would you recommend me to use. Cheers Mark

The Hottest Of Hot Renault Cars The Megane Sports 275 is worth the money if you want performance and fun

For a very brief moment, the Seat Cupra R held the lap record for a front-wheel drive car around the famous Nurburgring. Trouble is with holding records, someone always comes along and beats it. Which is what happened to Seat when Renault decided to have a crack at the record with its RenaultSport M e g a n e Trophy 275. Does being a few seconds slower around a race circuit make the Seat a bad car? Of course not. But the Cupra R is a very different car from the new Renault. The Seat is like a Golf GTI: a very fast hatchback that’s refined and very easy to live with every day. The Renault Megane Sport 275 S&S Trophy, to give the French car its full name, is quite the opposite. It’s an angry car that spits and growls and jiggles your spine over bumpy road surfaces. It’s also the best hot hatch that money (quite a lot of it) can buy. We’ve had this test car for a week and it’s surprising

that the driving licence is intact. What a motor! First, the specs. Take the previous Trophy 265’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine

a n d nudge the horsepower up to 271bhp (enough to justify rounding it up to 275 for the badges). Then attach to it an Akrapovic titanium exhaust system for extra noise pleasure. On paper this more powerful Trophy is no quicker to 62mph but it’s faster at the top end. On the previous Trophy the “Cup” pack was an option but here it comes as standard. And that’s a very good

thing because not only does

it include a limited-slip differential, but also stiffer springs, dampers and antiroll bars. The standard Trophy 275 costs £28,930 but you can spend some extra cash on options to make the car even more track-focused. Ours has quite a few addons, including the somewhat expensive fully adjustable Ohlins dampers. I doubt you’d notice them on the road but they’re good

for bragging rights – as are t h e

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres at an extra £1,000. Then there’s our car’s “liquid yellow” metallic paint. It might cost an extra £525, but it looks so good that you just have to do it. It’s a cliche, but not many cars could keep up with this car on a bendy road. A BMW M5 tried and had the legs on the Renault in a straight line but didn’t fancy trying to outcorner the mega Megane. Quite wise. The car has electric power steering (as have a large

number of modern cars because it saves fuel) and apart from the steering on my Porsche GT3, it’s about as good as it gets. The wheel is wrapped in sexy Alcantara and you can feel everything that’s happening to the front tyres through it. Bikers are familiar with Akrapovic exhausts but it’s a new name to car drivers. You get lots of lovely pops and bangs through the system as you change down through the six-speed manual gearbox. A 0-62mph time of 6.0sec

doesn’t sound that fast by modern standards but trust me, this car is very quick. It stops quickly, too. But what this hottest of hot Renaults does is provide endless amounts of fun. If you want a calmer drive go for the Seat or a Golf GTI but if you want thrills in a daily dose, the Renault is the motor of choice . The brilliance of the new Megane RenaultSport 275 S&S Trophy just shows what a cock-up Renault has made of the RenaultSport Clio 200. The previous hot Clio was a way to get as much fun as the Megane but for less money. If you’ve got the extra money for the Megane, don’t even consider the Clio.

Klitschko’s 'Mind Games'

Tyson Fury believes Wladimir Klitschko's decision to delay their world heavyweight title fight will backfire on the champion. Tyson Fury says world heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko was playing 'mind games' by postponing their bout but insists his preparations are unaffected.

The 39-year-old Klitschko (64-3-KO53) pulled out of the scheduled clash of October 24 but with the fight swiftly rearranged for November 28 - Fury is more enthusiastic than ever. Fury says "It feels great. I knew it would come back on so it was just a question of whether it was going to be this year or next year but we

got what we wanted and it's this year. "I'm getting my world title fight I've craved for so many years. There can't be another injury because there'd be a massive kerfuffle so I know it's going to happen on November 28. Camp's going well, training and sparring are going good so maybe it was a blessing in disguise." Ahead of the clash in Dusseldorf, Fury has already provided some memorable moments - he arrived at the London press conference dressed as Batman and wrestled The Joker.

Off Again Technical problems delayed the start of the autumn series of races for the Sailing Association Mar Menor (SAMM), but normal service was resumed for the first action of the season at Los Narejos earlier this month, with nine boats taking part in the first four lap race in very light winds. First to finish was Shoestring Dos with Tug Wilson and Pat Fleck, and they were then confirmed as winners after all the corrected times were sorted with Dave Belcher second in the Faversham 14. Even poorer winds meant the second race in the afternoon was just two

laps, and with Shoestring Dos again first to finish but was pushed into second place by the Faversham 14 on corrected time. Pictured left to right are Dave

Belcher, Tug Wilson, and Pat Fleck. The next race day is this Sunday October 18th starting at 10.00am at the CAR Centre, Los Narejos.

Wrong Man

Former Rugby Football Union chairman Martyn Thomas says he warned Twickenham bosses that Stuart Lancaster was the wrong man to lead England into the World Cup. Calling it a "tragedy" that Sir Clive Woodward is not pulling the strings in the international set-up, Thomas says Lancaster's lack of top-level experience before rising through the England ranks meant he would be found lacking on the biggest stage. Lancaster's career as England head coach is under close scrutiny and could be brought to an early end after the host team's failure to reach the World Cup knockout stages.

Former Holland international Youri Mulder has criticised Memphis Depay for thinking that he is a “big star”. Memphis arrived at Old Trafford during the summer, with United paying PSV £27.5 million (€37m) for the winger, who struck 22 times in 30 Eredivisie games last season. The 21-year-old has bagged three goals in four Champions League outings for United but netted just once in eight Premier League appearances. He has also disappointed in his country’s

dismal Euro 2016 qualification campaign and Mulder believes that Memphis has got too big for his boots. “In the Premier League he suffers, yet his attitude suggests that he is a big star. “It seems that people at Manchester United are starting to get fed up with this.” Pierre van Hooijdonk has also lashed out at Memphis, claiming he has failed to step up to the mark for Netherlands in the injuryenforced absence of winger Arjen Robben.

Matt’s Maiden Masters It’s always exciting to see a newcomer to the professional ranks getting their first title under their belt and so it was for 21-year-old Sheffield-born Matt Fitzpatrick who held his nerve to take the British Masters at Woburn. Interestingly enough, Matt became the 12th first-time winner on the 2015 European Tour. It was the 24th European Tour event he has played in with the top of the leaderboard somewhat crowded for most of the final day, but Fitzpatrick

pulled away from the field with four birdies between the 11th and 17th holes. Fitzpatrick becomes the youngest winner on the European Tour since 20year-old Matteo Manassero won the PGA Championship in 2013. He also becomes the youngest British Masters winner since the event became part of the European Tour in 1972. The previous youngest was Justin Rose, who was 21 years and 307 days old when he won in 2002. Matt is the fourth wire-to-

wire winner this season, the other being: Branden Grace (Alfred Dunhill Championship), Jordan Spieth (US Masters) and David Horsey (Made In Denmark). It was also the ninth tour victory by an Englishman this season. The others have been by Danny Willett (Nedbank Golf Challenge and European Masters); Andy Sullivan (South African Open Championship and Joburg Open); James Morrison (Open de España); Chris Wood

(Lyoness Open); David Horsey (Made in Denmark) and Lee Slattery (Russian Open). Incidentally, the return of the British Masters after a six-year absence was hailed as a success after 57 thousand spectators came out to watch across the four days in mid-October. Tournament host Ian Poulter said: “The fans have come out in their thousands and that’s what this place needs. British golf has been away for too long. This tournament, being able to bring it back the way we

have, is a huge honour.” Also at the Masters were Luke Donald and Lee Westwood, and both have confirmed that they will host future years just as Ian Poulter did at Woburn. The English pair, both of whom have held the honour of being World Number One, believe the event’s inclusion on the 2015 Race to Dubai is positive news for British golf and for fans of the sport in their home country. Since its return was announced in March, the tournament has proved a big hit with the

British public, with the opening round of the £3million tournament a complete ‘sell out’ following the ‘Sky Sports Thursday’ promotion, which offered 15,000 free tickets as part of the event’s aim to attract a new and existing audience to golf. Donald and Westwood featured alongside Poulter on the event’s striking new promotional image, with both players saying how much they enjoyed the event which was last played in 2008 at the Belfry when Lee Westwood came second.

Lee Puts Kids Before Golf As Divorce Takes Toll

The American dream is over for Lee Westwood, as he’s resigned his PGA Tour membership some three years after moving from Worksop to Florida in a bid to improve his short game and to find the missing piece to winning majors. The bottom line is a personal one. Westwood split from his wife Laurae in the summer and she has returned to Scotland with their two children, Sam and Poppy. That means that

daddy Westwood is primarily back because he wants to be near his kids, but the move makes golfing sense as well, as Westwood left for America as the fourth best golfer in the world. Last week at the re-launched Masters, he began as the 44th ranked player, following a solitary top-three finish in 52 events during this period as a PGA Tour member. I think it’s fair to say that while living in the States his

career didn’t move in the direction he wanted it to move, but obviously that’s not the reason why he’s doing this. But it’s good to see him back. There are a few events in the UK that he’s missed not playing in, and he has dropped a lot in the world rankings, so he knows he needs to address that. In fact, Westwood is in dire need of a huge improvement over the autumn if he is not to suffer all sorts of

consequences next year, like not being part of next year’s Ryder Cup team, which his best friend Darren Clarke will be captained. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has revealed how a chat with new European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley has calmed any thoughts he had about quitting the Europe to concentrate on the US circuit. Players are required to play a minimum of 13 events in order to

World number three McIlroy admits he feels guilty that someone will miss out on their European Tour card as a result of him taking exemption in the Tour's Final Series He is always going to be a

But what he wants is his “cake and eat it” and hopes there is going to be some give and take in the future, as he thinks at least half the Ryder Cup team are based in the States with families. Bill Haas delivered the winning point to his team and to his father last Sunday in a Presidents Cup that ended with a familiar result amid tension not felt in years. The Americans won for the sixth straight time, 15½-14½, only this was one that came down to the final match. And the emotion was never stronger -- on both sides U.S. captain Jay Haas made his son one of two

wild-card selections, and he put him out in the last of 12 singles matches at the Jack Nicklaus Golf Club, Korea against the local star, Bae Sang-moon, playing in his final event before he starts his mandatory military service in South Korea. It was a nerve-jangling finish, but it was still the ninth time in eleven matches that the USA had beaten the international side.

Bok To The Future One of the most fascinating aspects of the World Cup is its unpredictability. And no nation knows more about the highs and lows of the rugby rainbow than South Africa, writes GERRY GREEN. Three weeks ago, the Springboks were at an alltime low after losing their opening Pool B match to the 66-1 minnows of Japan. It was an astonishing result the biggest upset in the competition's history if not in the entire history of sport. It was a result that sensitive, nervous nations like England and Wales might never have recovered from. Not so South Africa – they just dug in with double determination and destroyed Scotland, Samoa and the USA to win the group and storm into the knockout stages. Their utter refusal to accept failure is testimony to the never-say-die spirit of the rainbow nation, a spirit that became part of South African culture on that his-

toric afternoon in 1995 when, inspired by Nelson Mandela wearing a Springbok jersey, Francois Pienaar's heroes reached the ultimate pinnacle themselves. "We had no right to win that game,'' recalls Joel Stransky, whose extra-time dropped goal sank a New Zealand team that had started the final as firm favourites. "But that is the great thing about rugby. The favourites can be beaten – it all depends how you play on the day.'' That is precisely why Wales have every chance of beating South Africa at Twickenham in Saturday's opening quarter final. Warren Gatland's injuryplagued Dragons are not expected to overcome the resurgent Springboks. They have lost an entire back division from their senior squad, a handicap that may help to explain why they failed to score a try even when Australia had two players in the sin-bin last

Sky Bet Championship weekend. Now they have lost versatile runner Liam Williams as well but the big plus point for Wales is that the Wallabies didn't cross their line, either – and Gatland's men have the psychological advantage of having won their last encounter with the Boks last autumn. Ireland should see off Argentina, and that will more than likely set up a semi-final against Australia, who simply have too much power to be held by Scotland. Hot favourites New Zealand, have come unstuck against the unpredictable French more than once in past World Cups. But after being blown away by the Irish, I cannot see Les Bleus holding up the All Blacks' march towards another final. Ultimately, it's beginning to look as if Richie McCaw's men will be going head to head in the final with their Antipodean arch-rivals from across the Tasman Sea.

Ireland look the most likely Northern Hemisphere challengers but what haunts me is the possible scenario of four Southern Hemisphere nations battling it out in the semi-finals. That, following England's humiliating exit from their own tournament, would be the ultimate slap in the face for rugby North of the Equator. The only consolation for Stuart Lancaster and his beleaguered England camp would be Australia winning the trophy. Then they could at least boast that it took the World champions to knock them out of the tournament! A 300-plus crowd saw Monte come up with a gritty performance to come from behind to get their third win of the season. The visitors asked the early questions, with Lopez having to pull out two early saves, before Racing Playas took the lead in the tenth minute. Monte didn’t panic and stuck to their game plan and with five minutes before the interval, Pley’s great pass was latched onto by M&A who was bundled over by the away keeper, with M&A duly converting the penalty.

Lopez was pressed into early second half action, whilst at the other end, a great cross ball pass reached Carlos who missed a total sitter. The visitors began to tire, and Monte took the lead as a pass from Pley found Macan who cooly slotted home. Monte finished with a flourish and were unlucky not to get a third with a fine inter-passing move seeing a wellsaved shot from Macan. This Sunday sees Monte at home again, as they entertain Sporting Orihuela with a 5.00 pm kick-off.

Victory over a deadly rival was just what Torry wanted after a poor start to the season, and they seized the game by the scruff of the neck with absolute determination to win it. They took the early lead in the seventh minute with Vicente thrusting down the right wing and delivered his cross, which was handled just inside the penalty area. Cesar then converted the spot kick to put Torry

ahead. Torrevieja’s positive mood was epitomised by the return of captain Jorge at the heart of the defence alongside Quintero and he was magnificent. Jorge takes no prisoners, and a great moment saw a biting tackle on former team mate Ernesto which was done with such forcefulness that he burst the ball. Ernesto lay on the floor whereas Jorge would have been

prepared to carry on playing with the exploded remains! He was a captain in every sense of the word, battling with his customary vigour and encouraging others to follow suit. When young Metej came on as a substitute, he made a point of speaking with him and getting him in the right frame of mind. It was Metej's countryman Brani, also on as a second half substitute who wrapped up the contest. Collecting the ball unexpectedly down the right wing, he quickly focussed and cut inside, driving hard into the box and cracking the ball into the net(pic-

tured). At the other end, Oscar made no mistakes and guaranteed a clean sheet with an authoritative display returned between the sticks. This was a Torry line up that was more recognisable in terms of players being in positions akin to their relative strengths, and to manager Pedreño’s credit, he is organising the unit much better to get optimum results. Saturday evening’s match at high-flying Elche Ilicitano(5.00pm kick-off) promises to be a stern test, but Torry will go into it in a far better frame of mind than they would have a month ago.

It’s all gone wrong for the Ilicitanos in just six days, as they suffered a second successive four-one drubbing, but this time last Saturday at home, and once again to modest opposition. Just a fortnight ago, Elche were aspiring to top placing in the Segunda division, but now two poor performances have got coach Rubén Baraja wondering what is going on, with the defeat to Mirandes leading him to keep the players in the dressing room after the full time whistle for a comprehensive post-mortem about the manner of the loss. It was a wretched display by Elche at the Martínez Valero stadium and the side’s first home defeat of the season, and though the absence through injury of captain Lolo has disrupted the Elche balance, the effect of his not being there should not have been as dramatic. The visitors dominated with Elche only really looking dangerous from set pieces, but it stayed goalless until the second half, when Galan put Mirandes ahead from a badly defended corner. Velez doubled the advantage with 17 minutes remaining and though Vergos pulled one back, the contest ended in the 80th minute when Elche keeper, Javi Jimenez brought down Lago Junior in the penalty area, and got red-carded, whilst Nestor converted the spot kick, with Lago Junior then getting a fourth. Poor stuff all-round for Elche who barely troubled at the other end , and are away to their old enemy, Almeria, this Sunday lunchtime.

England, who won all 10 of their qualifiers on the road to France 2016, will now be among the top seeds when the draw takes place in December UEFA have confirmed that England will be among the top seeds when the draw for next summer's European championship takes place. Roy Hodgson's side will join holders Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium and hosts France in Pot One, but the December 12 draw is sure to be tougher on their home nation counterparts. Northern Ireland won Group F with 21 points but have the lowest UEFA co-efficient of any team still involved and, like Wales, will be pulled from Pot Four.

Ronaldo Strikes Gold

Double Coup

CD Torrevieja have unveiled two of their biggest signings in recent years, Ruben Suarez and Javi Selvas, who have been bagged by the club’s recently appointed sporting director, Jonathan Risueño. They both come from CD Castellon with 36-year old Suarez scoring 15 goals in last season’s second division B promotion campaign. He’d previously played for Elche and Levante. 32-year old defender/midfielder Selvas made 29 first-team appearances last season, netting three goals, and was released by the club last month for financial reasons.

Transfer Investigation Eliaquim Mangala's move to Manchester City is reportedly the subject of a FIFA investigation. Mangala switched to City from Porto in the summer of 2014 for a reported fee of £32million, which was later discovered to be £10million more. Porto owned more than 56 per cent of the player, but the rest of his contract was owned by investment companies Doyen Sports and Robi Plus.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo scooped a record fourth Golden Boot award on Monday and is already eyeing his fifth. He picked up his prize at Madrid’s Hotel Westin Palace after netting 48 times to make him Europe’s top scorer last season. The win puts Ronaldo one above deadly rival Lionel Messi’s Golden Boot haul. “I want the fifth Golden Boot and if possible the sixth. I always want more,” said Ronaldo.

Real Opportunity Real Madrid get a gilt edged chance to go top of La Liga’s Primera Division tomorrow as surprise leaders Villarreal don’t play until Sunday. Real are at home to struggling Levante, though the visitors did turn over Barcelona in their last fixture. The champions, just a point off the top, have a Saturday night home meeting with Rayo Vallecano, who are just above the relegation area. The focus then turns to Sunday, with a lunchtime encounter between Villarreal and thirdplaced Celta Vigo.

Manchester City Post Manchester City have posted a net profit for the first time since Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008. The Premier League leaders' annual financial figures show they made a profit of £10.7m in the 2014-15 season. That is despite having to pay some £16m in fines for failing to meet Uefa's Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations. City, who posted a loss of £22.9m during the 2013-14 season, saw annual revenue grow for the seventh straight year - to £351.8m. It is the first time the club's revenue has broken the £350m barrier. Despite match day revenue falling last season, largely due to the club's early exit from the League Cup and ongoing stadium improvements, City say the club is now valued at £676m. So much against the popular buzz of thrilled anticipation from Red hearts and minds, including posing pundits, this football writer is calling for caution on the Kop. To be a successful manager of Liverpool: like a diplomat with good fortune, knowledge of (British) football and how it works – and doesn’t work like ‘elsewhere’ is essential. The great Liverpool managers of the past were pioneered by the legendary Scot Bill Shankly, who built the great 60s and 70s Liverpool teams that regularly terrified the opposition and his legacy and tradition was carried on by successful successors like Bob Paisley and Joe Fagan. Great players like Souness and Dalglish managed the club with limited success, and soon Liverpool was in the shadow of mighty Manchester United. Some big continental names have come and gone like Frenchman Gerard Houllier, with the most successful being Rafael Benitez, who was boss when Liverpool staged their dramatic Champions League Final comeback ten years ago. In 2012, Brendan Rodgers fitted the bill: young and confident, the Northern Irishman had learnt his craft with his ambitious young side at

Swansea. Rodgers soon gelled with the Liverpudlian faithful and two years ago it looked like Liverpool would at long last win the coveted Premier League title. But football stepped in to cruelly deny the club, and due to a challenging set of circumstances since, the club have wavered – and Rodgers was sacked 12 days ago. 48-year-old Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed one big burst of success with a minor German team, a club significantly without Liverpool’s traditions. The unlikely-looking Klopp appears like a cross between a trendy college lecturer and Elton John. ‘Kloppy’ is a real character though, with some excellent management qualities and skills but will that experience be enough to re-establish Liverpool as a major force in the all-conquering Prem? In taking unfashionable Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title and winning their domestic cup in the same season, comparisons could be legends like Bobby Robson with Ipswich and the legendary Brian Clough. The latter took provincial Midlands clubs like Derby County and - be still my beating heart – Nottingham Forest to the very pinnacle of European football. Yet in the German’s case, his legend hasn’t lasted long – and therein lies the true test of greatness, as we currently watch struggling Jose Mourinho striving to maintain his initial suc-

cess at Chelsea – again. It took four years for Klopp to win the double in the Bundesligia. The £192m (and more) question is – will this charismatic German be given the necessary time to rebuild Liverpool into a championship-winning side, one that can challenge the mighty Manchesters of today? Because the expectations at Anfield are so immense, the likeable new boy will have instant pressure from the Fenway Sports Group above, the media everywhere , and of course the ever-watchingclosely Anfield faithful – fantastic fans who want a return to Shankly-type past glories. Most of the above-mentioned groups of people keenly watching the world-famous Merseyside club seem sure the Reds have found their right man at last. Have they? Meanwhile Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been given a suspended one-match stadium ban and fined £50,000 by the Football Association for comments made about match officials. Mourinho had claimed officials were "afraid" to award his team penalties after Robert Madley denied Chelsea a spotkick in a 3-1 loss to Southampton. The FA charged that his comments "imply bias on the part of a match official".Mourinho's ban will only be enforced if he repeats the offence within a year.

BRING IT ON!

e e r h T s n Klopp Sig Deal Year In yet another superbly ironic twist that football regularly provides, after the international break Klopped-up Liverpool are first on stage on Saturday in the early game at White Hart Lane. Spurs are eighth with 13 points, Liverpool tenth with 12, so it couldn’t be set up more perfectly for Jurgen-the German to closely observe top British soccer between two of football’s most famous names – but now with a very personal viewpoint! Following on at 4 pm aqui en Espana there’s a scintillating set-up of Premier prize-fighters squaring up to each other. Can Chelsea get the Bridge bandwagon rolling along again against third-frombottom-and-worried Aston Villa? Both badly need a win – shh, but the name of Brendan Rodgers has been Brumbled about in the West Midlands. Capital Cracker, fourth plays sixth. Crystal Palace at home to West Ham looks like the southern version of Match of the Day, mate, with both managers currently doing a great job. No chance, pal say those in t’ north-west of the country - MOTD is definitely Everton at home to Man United, seventh v third – and that looks a belter. Those leaders, who’ve wobbled lately, Man City will be looking to remind newbies Bournemouth how tough life is in the top tier, especially at the Etihad. Perhaps sweet for the Cherries is that fivegoals-last-time-out Sergio Aguero will be mercifully missing, injured on international duty. Southampton v Leicester looks lively, especially after that Saints scalp of champions Chelsea at the Bridge two weeks ago. Despite recent wobbles the Foxes are still lurking headily in fifth – and only three points behind Man City at the top.

SANCHEZ A DOUBT

Arsene Wenger has revealed he faces an anxious wait to discover the condition of Alexis Sanchez. Sanchez played twice for Chile during the international break, despite picking up a hip injury in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Manchester United. Wenger is concerned he might not be ready to face Watford on Saturday.

COOK HITS A HUNDRED

England reaching 197-1 at tea on day three in reply to Pakistan's Shoaib Malik-inspired 523-8 declared. England skipper Alastair Cook made 100 and led the tourists' charge, compiling his 28th Test century - and eighth in Asia - as well as surpassing 1,000 Test runs in 2015.

There’s a massive relegation battle as West Brom entertain Sunderland. The Black Cats have sensiblyfor-them-for-once found a new home for much-travelled Sam Allardyce. The big man did a great job at West Ham in: - a) getting the Hammers out of the Championship, and: - b) keeping the ungrateful so and so’s up there in the top half of the Prem. His reward for this double feat? The sack: -- nice. Now can saviour Sam illuminate the Stadium of Light where other luminaries haven’t shone for a good long while? Once employed, albeit fairly briefly by nasty neighbours Newcastle, if Uncle Sam succeeds for the Yank owners he will surely also win the hearts and minds of those long-suffering ones on Wearside. Elsewhere, Watford entertain Arsenal this Saturday evening. The Hornets have surprised a few, including me to have lately achieved mid-table respectability, only conceding 7 goals in eight games (their goalie Gomez is good, he saves penalties) – but have merely scored six. The second-placed Gunners have also conceded seven, but in sharp contrast to their hosts have banged in thirteen, providing the usual high expectations in North London. Re-invented central striker Theo Walcott’s now going well as the main man, 12 goals from 13 games, and super Sanchez looks back in form. Let’s hope it’s not a goalless draw at Vicarage Road, then.

Must Win For McCLAREN! Newcastle v Norwich must produce a victory for Steve McClaren as the storm clouds are following him from the East Midlands where the man is not popular? Prem newbies Norwich have started reasonably with nine points from eight: two wins, three draws and three defeats isn’t bad for the canny Canaries who some predicted would struggle in the Prem. There’s an ‘MNF’ – that’s code for an evening match held on the first day after the weekend - this time it’s Swansea v Stoke: scintillating stuff? Possibly, the Swans have slipped back of late and are only one point above improving-at-last Stoke, 11th plays 14th.
