two point eight million euro tender for the

uncompleted Emergency Centre at La Zenia serving the Orihuela Costa is set to be advertised by the Valencian regional government before the summer, according to the PSOE/Socialist opposition leader on Orihuela council, Carolina Gracia. The centre was going to house the local Police and Guardia Civil, as well as being a base for the fire and ambulances services in addition to the local Civil Protection group, but the

contractor went bankrupt just months into the development six years ago. Over one hundred demonstrators went to the site last December to vent their anger that the project remained stalled. Gracia said that the centre should be completed by the end of 2017, after revealing that she had met with the head of Valencia’s emergency department, José María Ángel, and had received a full briefing on the project. She added that

the government will how arrange a meeting with Orihuela’s Partido Popular mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, to discuss the details on completing the project, which currently is a concrete skeletal structure next to the Consum supermarket in La Zenia. Gracia added the Valencian authorities will appoint somebody to supervise the project and to check the state of the incomplete structure as well as adapting the completion work to fit current laws.

RING OF SHAME Children Used In Local Prostitution Racket

T

he National Police have rescued 18 Nigerian women who were forced into prostitution in the Torrevieja area with 30 arrests being made, as agents smashed a vice ring that operated in the city, with the strings being pulled from Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta. 18 of those arrested were denied bail, with police raids being made in Torrevieja, Orihuela, Cartagena, as well as further afield in the Madrid and Valencia areas. One of those held was a British national who lived in a caravan in the Torrevieja area, with the group also using a pastor of a local church as a front for some of their work. Authorities say that over 50 women, many of whom were children, were exploited by the gang. Money made from the prostitution racket was sent back to

Nigeria to fund the expansion of their operation, with the National Police launching their investigation over a year ago after getting a complaint from a Nigerian woman in Malaga who told them about the way she was abused by the gang. Women were forced to work on Torrevieja’s streets every day for at least twelve hours from late afternoon until the following dawn, and were not allowed to return to their homes before sunrise. Once in their houses, they were denied sleep because the gang leaders forced them to work as caregivers for the elderly and to clean and cook for them. If orders were disobeyed, including not getting the right amount of money for their sexual services, they would only be fed bread and subjected to voodoo rituals in which they were forced to swallow dirty

BY ALEX TRELINSKI water with sand in it, as well as being forced to walk naked around the houses they lived in. The women were also threatened with death if they went to the police to complain. The Nigerian gang was part of a prostution cartel in Torrevieja, having regular meetings with other gangs to decide on which areas they would operate in and to fix prices to avoid any danger of anybody undercutting each other. The gang was

led by five woman who, according to the National Police, used a pastor from a Torrevieja church to increase their domination of the exploited females. The clergyman apparently knew the circumstances of the forced prostitutes and where they lived, and hid documents about them in his church, as well as getting paid by the gang for his services. The women were also forced to pay the pastor directly.

The new boss of Torrevieja’s sewage plant has agreed to do something about the smells that around 25 thousand residents have to put up with during the hot summer months. Enrique Lapuente of the Valencia region wastewater treatment body, EPSAR, met with Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón last week, with

Lapuente saying that work will be done in covering up the open sewage channels that cause the stench in a longstanding problem. The downside is that the work will only probably done in the autumn. The mayor praised EPSAR and Lapuente for taking seriously a problem that has been unaccetable to many people over many years.

Five Moroccan farm workers based in the Torre Pacheco and Cartagena areas were killed on Tuesday morning and three were injured when their minibus skidded off the RM-11 between Lorca and Águilas at around 7.20am. The vehicle apparently lost

control and went off the road, crashing off a bridge, falling into a gulley below and overturning. The men had headed off from Torre Pacheco to do some celery picking when the tragedy happened, with the leading theory for the cause being that the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Rubbish Plan Torrevieja council is set to debate plans today (Friday) for the municipality to take control of waste disposal services after the current contract with the Acciona company finishes in June.

That contract is worth 17 million euros a year with mayor Mayor José Manuel Dolón saying that four million euro a year can be saved by bringing rubbish collection under council control.

Work has finished on stopping emissions oozing out of a controversial abandoned waste dump on the Orihuela/Pilar de la Horadada border that raised fears from nearby residents over toxic fumes. Photos have been released of sand covering a now flat area where waste material had been burnt over six thousand square metres for the best part of two decades. Officials from the Valencian region’s environmental quality department visited the site recently and confirmed the “all clear” over emissions that had been seeping out and producing a vile stench that wafted around the area, much to the displeasure of residents and visitors. The dump site led to the creation of a waste "mountain" which had at one stage been up to 20 metres in height and the visible elements included tyres, plastics, and metal. In July 2014, residents from 10

urbanisations in the area came together complaining about the sickly smell that the tip was producing as well as a potential health risk associated with the fumes in addition to it being a major fire hazard at the height of summer. At the time, The Courier covered a report that had the signature of 799 local residents which was presented to the Guardia Civil's environmental division, Seprona, detailing their concerns about the dump adjoining their homes and two golf courses, namely Las Ramblas de Orihuela and Real Club de Golf Campoamor. One of the community presidents, Bob Hammond from Las Ramblas, also called on the local councils at Orihuela and Pilar to investigate the problems caused by the fumes, and whether they had affected anybody's health. Seprona subsequently investigated the residents

complaint and last year filed a report to the Orihuela criminal court, as well as the environment prosecutor in Alicante and the Valencia regional government. No further legal moves have been made public from the authorities. The site was used between 1983 and 1996 by Hijos de Antonio Fenoll SA and though operations were "run-down" 20 years ago, the area was never officially decommissioned The current owners of the site, Montepiedra SA, have submitted regeneration plans to the Valencian environmental quality department including the planting of trees and shrubs, though the regional Informacion newspaper reported last weekend that officials don’t believe the proposals are good enough and up to legal standards, as its located in the special protection zone including the Sierra Escalona and the Dehesa de Campoamor.

Honest Lady A Barcelona woman was thanked by local train station bosses after finding and returning a bag containing more than eight thousand euros in cash. Barcelona Metropolitan Transport said the woman found the bag and quickly reported it to an employee. Staff discovered

what was inside the bag and then got a report that a woman at Barcelona's El Prat airport was missing a piece of luggage, Barcelona Metropolitan Transport was able to reunite the woman with her handbag and the large sum of cash, but did not record

the identity of the woman who turned in the bag. The case marked the second time in a month that a large sum of money was discovered on local transport with a wallet containing over eight thousand euros being found at Barcelona's Arc de Triomf station.

Knockout Blow

Don’t Panic!

Austria's parliament passed tough new asylum measures, including a process under which migrants could be turned away at the border within an hour.

A 45-year old British exboxer, Robert Gray, will be charged with either culpable homicide or reckless injury resulting in death (the Spanish equivalent of manslaughter) after felling a 42-year old British man, Terrance Wilmot, with a punch. The incident happened in Javea on Sunday night, as the victim broke his neck after hitting the ground. Gray appeared in a Denia court on Tuesday and was remanded into custody. The drama unfolded outside a cocktail bar on Arenal Promenade in Javea around 9.00pm on Sunday. Reports from the Guardia Civil suggest that Wilmot had been continually pro-

voking Gray who was with his girlfriend, and that the ex-boxer had calmly brushed aside his taunts. Both men were said to have been drinking together during the afternoon and a heated verbal exchange followed inside the bar in midevening. The row turned nasty outside as Gray left with his partner to go to their car, with Wilmot allegedly grabbing and assaulting him, with Gray retaliating by felling Wilmot with a single punch, before leaving the scene with his girlfriend. Wilmot struck the back of his neck when he hit the ground. And he went into convulsions and dying about an hour later despite

the efforts of a SAMU ambulance crew to revive him. The incident was recorded by a security video camera on a nearby building, and Gray went to the Guardia’s local barracks after officers spoke to his girlfriend and persuaded her to telephone him. He admitted to Guardia agents that he punched his fellow compatriot but insisted that he did not intend to inflict grievous harm. Gray appeared in front of a judge in Denia on Tuesday, who denied him bail, and said that he was keeping his options open on one of two charges, either reckless homicide or reckless injury resulting in death.

Correos Concern

The Guardia Civil's chief has slammed British tabloid newspaper reports warning of terrorist attacks on Spanish resorts, including the Costa Blanca as "alarmist". On a visit to Alicante City, the Guardia's director-general, Arsenio Fernández, said that people should continue with their lives as normal and that "everything you read should not be believed". Fernández added that reports seemed to be based on absolutely no evidence and that Spanish security services were well aware of

them. Quizzed by reporters over alleged increased Jihadist activity within Alicante Province, the Guardia boss said that he "could not confirm" it, saying that Spain is subject to the same pressures over terrorism as the rest of the European Union. Last week a German newspaper quoted intelligence sources as suggesting that terror attacks were being planned in south European resorts, with British tabloids seizing the story to suggest that extremists were going to strike on the Spanish Costas.

Officer In Road Rage Death An off-duty Guardia Civil officer has been arrested after allegedly killing a 39-year-old Moroccan driver with several shots to the head whilst he was high on cannabis after they became involved in an argument following an accident on the A-3 MadridValencia motorway. The accused, 31, has tested positive for cannabis.

The officer named as Ángel Luis V.J from Quintanar de la Orden, near Toledo, was arrested on Monday morning after shooting the driver of the other car five times in the head. According to witnesses, the two cars collided and both drivers got out of their vehicles where they proceeded to have an argument about the crash.

Corvera’s Coming A Los Montesinos political party is calling for longer opening hours for the town’s Correos office describing the current service provided to the five thousand strong community as “lousy”. The Correos office is open for 90 minutes every weekday between 12.30 pm and

2.00pm, with no Saturday opening. The AIMS independent party has been collecting signatures for a petition to be presented to the next plenary session of the Los Montesinos council wanting an improved Correos service, including a computer

that would process payments and invoices, as well as longer office hours. The Correos office in the town hit the headlines two years ago when it was closed for a few weeks in the summer over an unpaid electricity bill with provider Iberdrola.

Tiny Shaker A small earthquake hit the Torrevieja area early on

Tuesday morning at 4.35am, measuring one point six on

the Richter scale. It was felt in Algorfa and Quesada.

The management contract for Murcia's Corvera airport will be awarded in September, according to Murcia's public works minister, Francisco Bernabé. In an announcement made to the regional parliament, Bernabé said that potential unnamed bidders from both America and Europe will be inspecting the facilities next month ahead of their possible application to run the unopened facility. The timetable means that Corvera is on course to replace the current airport at San Javier in 2017.

Out Of Pocket

A 52- year- old Orihuela man who sold non-existant holidays via the internet has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. An Italian made a complaint back in January when a two thousand euro holiday to a villa on the island of Lanzarote was advertised and paid for. The tourist arrived there to find that it was a con and that he was two thousand euros out of pocket, with the villa owner knowing nothing about the rental. The Guardia Civil followed the two thousand euro trail to a bank in Orihuela and subsequently arrested the alleged swindler.

Lane Expansion Plans to turn the A-7 road between Crevillente and Orihuela into a threelane highway became a reality on Monday when the Public Works ministry advertised a 70 million euro tender for the project. A 17 kilometre section will be expanded from two lanes on the Alicante-Murcia route between kilometre markers 528 and 545.

Fruity Boost Fruit exports from the Valencia region have gone up by just over five percent in the first two months of 2016, compared to last year. Official figures show that 663 million euros of fruit was dispatched, but vegetable export statistics showed a near two percent fall over the last two months of 2015.

On The Up Foreign home buyers are fuelling a property market recovery in the Valencia region according to figures for 2015 published on Monday by the College of Property Registrars in Madrid. They say that 26.4 percent of purchases last year were from nonSpaniards, with the region the busiest for foreign sales in mainland Spain, just behind the Canary Islands and the Balearics. In a different survey from BBVA Research, house purchases in the Murcia region last year (2015) increased by 27 percent compared to the figures for 2014, at double the national average rise of just over 13 percent.

Illegal High

12 thousand doses of synthetic drugs (also known as “legal highs”) destined for Britain, have been intercepted by the National Police in the Benidorm area, with four Lithuanians and two Ukrainians arrested. They

ran a laboratory in Finestrat which was capable of producing six thousand daily doses of the drugs, which would then be sold via the internet, and mailed to UK customers using courier services.

Heist Plea

Two out of three defendants have pleaded guilty to trying to rob an Elche bank in 2011 after digging a tunnel. They made their plea at an Elche court last Friday. The daring heist failed when the gang dug through into an office with no money in it at the Sabadell Bank branch

on Calle Gabriel Miró, Prosecutors had called for jail terms ranging between three years and a year, whilst Sabadell have asked for 56 thousand euros of compensation for the cost of sealing the tunnel, and hiring extra security staff when it was still open.

More Cars Spanish new car production saw a healthy rise of seven point six three percent in the first quarter of 2016 when compared with the same period in 2015, according to figures released by this week by the Spanish car manufacturers association,

ANFAC. The group said that over 12 and half thousand cars were made each day over the first three months of the year, whilst 217 thousand were manufactured in March alone, a seven point seven percent rise on the same month last year.

Blurred Lines

A long awaited feasibility study to see how Torrevieja could have a rail link to Alicante has brought three options that Torrevieja mayor José Manuel Dolón says are totally unacceptable because of their impact on the environment and residents, and he's put forward Los Montesinos as a possible option to cater for the area. The three options in a delayed report from the transport ministry in Madrid suggest one route coming in parallel with the AP-7 and entering the city by Los Balcones, with the station

being in the Park of Nations area. The second option would see the line get in through the Campico de Guardamar area before finishing up in La Mata by the Antonio Soria park and the third option, which Dolón described as "impossible", has the line getting into Torrevieja through the San Luis and El Limonar urbanisations as well as part of the Parque Natural. Dolón quipped with journalists at a news conference that the delayed report may have been produced by the ministry as a quick fix just to get the council "off

their backs" and as something of a joke. On a more serious note, the mayor said that a new railway station does not necessarily have to be in Torrevieja to serve the city, and basing a terminus in the neighbouring Los Montesinos municipality would significantly reduce any environmental concerns to the area. Pushed on where the best Torrevieja option for a station would be, Dolón said that the edge of the San Luis urbanisation would be his personal preferred choice so long as any impact was minimal for the environment.

Stash Seized

Three people have been arrested in Alicante Province for being part of an eight-strong drugs gang that is said to have shipped five tonnes of marijuana and hashish in lorries from Spain to Holland. The National Police say that close to two tonnes was stopped by French authorities at the Spanish-French border concealed in generators and air conditioning equipment on a lorry.

Other items were seized in a raid on a Malaga industrial estate, with the men held in Alicante

Province being responsible for the sale and distribution of the merchandise via illegal companies.

Castle Rumpus

Hola My Love!

The war over dogs having access to the area in and around Santa Pola's castle has intensified with

cleaning councillor Francisco Soler taking delivery of a report setting out the damage that dog

mess and urine has created around the building of cultural interest. A few weeks ago Soler floated the idea of curbing dog access around the castle which brought a thousand-plus signature petition to the council from local dog owners complaining about Soler's proposals. The councillor says that he is weighing up options on the basis of the “damage” report before presenting his suggestions to the authority.

Pressure On The world's first ever mattress that can detect infidelity has been invented in Spain. The hi-tech bed can sense 'suspicious activity' and tell its owner via a phone app if the mattress is in use and how many people are on it. The 'Smartress' was created by Spanish mattress maker Durmet after figures

revealed that the Spanish are the most unfaithful people in Europe. Its Lover Detection System includes 24 ultrasonic sensors that generate a 3D map of the mattress to show exactly which areas are receiving greater pressure, at what movement is taking place, all in 'real time'.

Residents of the Playa Lisa area of Santa Pola are to get improved water pressure to their homes once work is completed by

Hidraqua over the next two months. 40 year old pipes are to be replaced around the Avenida de Ronda, between Calle Consueta and Calle

Cartagena, with the 200 metre project set to benefit around three thousand residents once the work is completed by the end of June.

Thumbs Up Spain offers the best foreign holiday value for British tourists according to a UK Post Office survey, with 88 percent of those surveyed saying that areas like the

Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol are right at the top of their list. Turkey was next with 85 per cent, followed by the Canaries and Balearics.

Dubai was given the worst rating, with only 55 per cent of families thinking it offers good value. Next worst was Mexico, then Italy and France.

Lights Out

An illegal power supply led to the arrest of a British man for having a clandestine marijuana plantation in his Benferri home. The National Police detained the 57-year-old Brit and an 18year-old Italian national,

both of whom lived at the house after complaints that the property was syphoning off large amounts of electricity. On their house call, agents discovered 175 illegal plants in the basement

along with all the appropriate light and air conditioning equipment, as well as thirteen hundred euros in cash. The two arrested men are facing public health and electricity stealing charges in front of an Orihuela judge.

Drier Times Orihuela council says they are working with water company Hidraqua to solve some of the storm flooding issues that affect he Orihuela Costa. Coastal councillor Sofía Álvarez ( of the Partido Popular and pictured right) along with Luisa Boné (Ciudadanos) said that they were looking at addressing issues in regard to La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor. The councillors, in a news conference on Tuesday, also talked about tidying up and pruning around the Los

Pinos urbanisation as well putting together a similar plan for Aqua Marina. Other plans include the replace-

ment of 13 palm trees on the promenade between La Zenia and Cala Capitán with repairs.

What A Steal! A Daya Nueva woman has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a classic Cadillac Deville car worth 20 thousand euros, after a car enthusiast tipped off authorities that she was trying to sell it for just five thousand euros. The Guardia Civil discovered that the vehicle's description matched that of one stolen from Dolores, and they discovered it hidden inside a unit on an industrial estate. A 42 - year-old Spanish woman was arrested with the car returned to its rightful owner.

Library Call

Orihuela Costa - based political party CLARO used last weekend's World Book Day to repeat it's long-running call for a dedicated local library to service all nationalities in the area. The party claims that the Orihuela council is legally obliged to provide a library as around 30 thousand people live in the area and that a weekly “reading room” centre manned by volunteers is woefully inadequate for the Orihuela Costa residents.

Con Stopped A gang of internet conmen that defrauded 300 thousand euros from around 250 people has been arrested by the National Police. The eight member gang ran their operation from Valencia with a whole stream of fake websites and dummy pages pretending to be well-known companies selling a variety of goods. The crooks opened over 50 bank accounts in which they put in the fruits of their fraudulent sales.

Full House

Spanish hotels recorded 21.8 million overnight stays last month, a 17.6 percent rise on the same month last year, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute. Though the rise is largely in keeping with increased foreign numbers, the March figures would also have been boosted by Easter being a few weeks earlier this year, as opposed to being in April.

Home Alone

One in four Spanish homes are occupied by just one person in figures released by the National Statistics Institute which suggests that living alone is becoming more common across the country. Four and a half million homes in Spain are lived in by a sole occupant, with the number having increased by just over one percent in the last year. Over-65’s living alone are, in the majority, female, and widowed, whilst those aged 65 and under are more likely to be men, says the Institute.

Hair Raiser A dozen patients had to be moved from their rooms in Torrevieja Hospital last week after a hairdryer caught fire. Nobody was injured.

Bail Denied

A Mallorca judge has ordered a 26-year-old Moroccan man, Mohamed Harrak (pictured in battle dress) to be held without bail after concluding he was prepared to launch a terrorist attack. Judge Carmen Lamela Diaz said that the man’s attack plans on an unspecified target in Spain had not been carried out for reasons beyond his control. .

Harack worked as a cook at a restaurant in Palma de Mallorca, and was arrested last week, as reported in the last edition of The Courier. The court documents said he had tried to recruit Islamic State combatants and had been in contact with leaders of the extremist group in Syria. His main hobby was indulging in a passion for guns.

Three National Police officers were injured and two nightclub bouncers arrested after a brawl at a Benidorm club in the Rincon de Loix area of the resort in the early hours of Sunday morning. The incident happened at a club popular with British partygoers, The Square Disco Night Club on Avenida de Mallorca. A customer had an altercation with the bouncers and called in the police, claiming that he had been assaulted by one of them. As the officers arrived to deal with the situation, the two bouncers are said to have intimidated potential witnesses to the customer’s complaint against them, and then the scene turned violent as

The police are working on trying to identify who was involved in throwing objects at them.

British Tourists Policy Warning British tourists choosing Spain may have to pay double on travel insurance on a single trip policy compared to other European countries because of private hospital costs. Spain is one of the

priciest places to fall sick, with patients wheeled into private hospitals rather than the state system, according to insurer AllClear. A 61-year-old woman recovering from breast cancer

taking a 10 day trip to France could expect to pay £10.44 for the cheapest option on the Travel Supermarket website. But to get the same level of cover in Spain, she would need to pay £25.71.

The only glimmer of good news is that only nought point two percent of child sexual abuse imagery is hosted in the UK, which just shows how much filth there is in the rest of the world. Child sexual abuse is most poignant for my wife, who has given me permission to write about it - as a warning to others not to fall into a similar trap. After the death

Back Off Barack!

Much has been said about Barack Obama coming to the UK last weekend and weighing in to support the “stay in” campaign ahead of June’s referendum. Wasn't it America which fought a war against Britain to gain its independence? How dare they now come over to the UK to say that Britain shouldn't regain its independence. Britain - let's have our own Tea Party! Could you imagine the reaction if Cameron went to America and suggested that the North American continent should get together and that America should lose some of its soverignty to Canada and Mexico to achieve it and allow total freedom of movement between countries? And as for Britain being way down the pecking order with trade deals if it left the EU - what about that special relationship we are supposed to have with America? Can't see much special relationship here!

of her first husband she joined a dating agency and met a man who she thought was charming, courteous and 'normal'. She did not live with him until she married him about a year after they first met. On their honeymoon she discovered an awful truth - that he was a transvestite (cross dresser) and she caught him dressed in his dead aunt's clothes. And if that wasn't bad enough, she noticed that he was using a camera which had a switch in his pocket and as he walked by he took

pictures of young children playing in the swimming pool and elsewhere. My wife hadn't heard of paedophiles but when the cruise ended she sought advice and was told to keep her three children well away from him. Incredibly he showed her hundreds of pictures of children that he kept hidden under floorboards in an under-stairs cupboard. Needless to say she sought legal advice, changed her name and moved away, and became divorced and informed the police.

Treasury Twaddle

I could write volumes on the boring diatribe over whether Britain should stay in or exit the EU, much of it based on fear tactics. Anyone listening to the “stay in” politicians would be forgiven for thinking that the world was going to end if we left. They try to convince us that markets would dry up, people would be thrown out of work, tax revenues would drop, taxes would have to rise, mortgages would cost more, the economy would nosedive and incomes would fall. History, however, tells us that business and trade evolves, and as one market dries up another business opportunity opens up. The UK should make its own goods again and people should buy British instead of

the country importing virtually everything. If it did, the environment would be the big winner, because huge amounts of greenhouse gases are caused by shipping goods all around the world. What I would like to hear from politicians is exactly how much bad (illegal or those with few or no skills) immigration is costing Britain. Then set that against the dubious benefits EU membership gives the UK and then factor in the country’s huge financial contribution to Europe and the correspondingly much smaller sum we get back, and you might get a more realistic picture. When you do all these sums you might get the real economic bottom line rather than the frightening twaddle we've been served with so far from the Treasury which has not looked at any of the figures I mentioned. Surveys have suggested elderly people and the poor are more likely to vote to quit Europe. Now that's hardly surprising. Elderly people are far more likely to smell a con rather than more gullible youngsters!

king’s Woe Spain is set for fresh elections after King Felipe VI announced the failure of the latest round of coalition talks on Tuesday. No party secured a majority in last year's December poll, where political newcomers brought to an end Spain's long two-party system. Mariano Rajoy, leader of the Partido Popular, has been caretaker prime minister ever since. After further talks, King Felipe said no candidate to replace Rajoy was possible. His decision means that no party will be able to cobble together a minority or coalition government that would

assume control of the 350-member lower house of Parliament by Monday, therefore triggering a new election for June 26. "His Majesty... has established that there is no candidate with the necessary support," a statement from the royal

palace said. Last year's election saw the rise of the anti-austerity Podemos movement and the centrist Ciudadanos, ending the dominance of the PP and the Socialists. Opinion polls suggest a similar stalemate result.

Cantabile Double

Loving Gift Quesada couple Isabel Sanchez and Ivan Lopez are walking down the aisle today (Friday) and they’re doing so in the knowledge that they’ve generously given 500 euro to the Rojales-based Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre, rather than giving their wedding guests the traditional party favour that often ends up hidden away in a drawer. The amount given will enable them to feed ten rescued horses for a month. “We like all animals and love nature,” Ivan said.

“What was most important to us was that we chose a charity that really looks after their animals and uses their donations well. We appreciate how difficult it must be for the rescue centre to do their work, but believe it is completely necessary work.” Rescue centre co-founder Sue Weeding said, “We’ve never had a donation related to a wedding before. It’s so lovely to know that a young couple thought of us when planning their wedding day.

The Cantabile choir are staging two concerts with a mixture of classical and contemporary songs, ranging from Mozart to a song that featured in one of the Star Trek films. Cantabile will be performing on Sunday May 8th at Torrevieja Casino

starting at 8.00 pm and Saturday May 14th at 7.00 pm at La Siesta Church, Torrevieja. Admission is free for both concerts, though there will be a retiring collection at the second event for the La Siesta Church Management Fund.

Pet Relief Potty

JFK International Airport in New York has come up with a first, having opened up a pet potty — complete with fake grass and a red fire hydrant in one of their terminals! And the singlestall bathroom, which is decorated with paw prints and lined with Epoxy and waterproof turf, is already making jet-setting pet owners purr. “We had some privacy, and he did his job. He wasn’t afraid here,” said Aliyah Sharifullin of her 2year-old mixed-breed cat, Thirteen, after she took him

into the room to do his business. The room is designed to be hosed down regularly, and pet owners are given poop bags to help clean up after themselves. Airport officials said they opened the room so that travelling pets don’t have to keep their legs crossed for any longer than necessary. Before, pet owners would either have to clean up after their animals made a mess on the terminal floor or take them outside to relieve themselves and then go back through security.

Making Your Dog Happier In our last two features we have been examining why your dog gets frightened and last week we look at some tips at helping your furry friend through any problems. Here are some more ideas including more on changing your pet’s habits. COUNTER CONDITIONING Counter conditioning interrupts your pet's fearful behaviour by diverting its attention to a command behaviour or action it is comfortable with. Distracting the dog to an obedience command, trick or game can break the pattern of fear in these situations. Food treats help too in fearful situations. As soon as your pet begins to exhibit anxiety command him to “sit” and then give him a reward. Lag as long as possible by showing - but not giving - the treat in order for the dog to focus on your hand rather than on the stressful situation. THINGS THAT DON’T WORK Do not punish your dog. Punishment never works in fearful situations. It only makes the problem worse. Do not raise your voice to your dog. Do not force the dog into obedience or drag it toward fearful encounters.

Any intervention you make must be done while the event is in progress. Dogs do not project themselves backward or forward in time and they will not understand what you are fussing about after the event has occurred. Do not attempt to train your dog if you yourself are apprehensive or tense in the same situation. HOW TO HANDLE DOG TO DOG SITUATIONS Some dogs react with fear to the introduction of other pets that do not wish your dog harm. These dogs may react with a combination of fear and aggression or selfdefence. Sometimes your dog will only exhibit this behaviour with specific other dogs. Big dogs, multiple dogs, same sex dogs, or overly boisterous dogs may set off a fearful or aggressive response. Your dog may give mixed signals in such situations such as wagging its tail at the same time it growls. A helpful exercise is to bring your dog to a local doggy park(and there are more opening in our area) but keep him in the parking lot 50 feet or so from the park entrance where he can observe dogs coming and going. Give him rewards

when he remains calm. Slowly decrease the distance to the park entrance until the dog can enter without fear. These activities should be performed with your pet on a leash and wearing a muzzle or head halter. Ideally your dog should focus on you and the expected treat every time another dog comes into view. It should remain calm and happy with its tail wagging. OBEDIENCE TRAINING All dogs gain selfconfidence and an enhanced ability to deal with new or threatening situations when they develop obedience skills. Putting your dog through regular five-minute obedience sessions prior to having to face stressful situations is always helpful. The more voice commands your dog learns to respond to, the more likely it will be to trust your advice in fearful situations. Snug-fitting muzzles, leashes with choke collars and head halters all give the dog a sense of comfort and place you, as the owner, in control. FEAR OF THUNDER Some pets become frightened when they hear thunder or loud noises. Your

dog may run off or hide and refuse to come out. If she is outside she may try to escape from the yard and run away. The problem is usually worse when the dog is out-of-doors. These frightened dogs are often destructive and the problem is often progressive. After first being only afraid of thunder your dog may become afraid of wind, rain storms, firecrackers or flashes of light. To correct this problem, first establish a safe place for the pet to go when thunder occurs. A quiet closet or under the bed is OK. Feed him and praise him in his “safe place”. You can make a tape recording of the thunder or loud noises for training purposes. You can also wait for lightening and threatening weather to begin to play with your dog and put him through a series of tricks such as catch, roll over, etc. to draw his attention away from the noise. Give him a lot of praise and treats in his “safe place”. When you use the tape recording, gradually increase the volume of the noise. Not all dogs can lose their fear of thunder or loud noises. But most dogs will improve or learn to manage their fears.

TRELI ON THE TELLY WITH ALEX TRELINSKI

Foul language, strong violence including a spear through the back of a head, treachery, black humour, and a full-frontal reveal:No, I’m not talking about The Chase, but Monday’s swashbuckling return of Game of Thrones on one of a zillion TV channels and internet platforms close to you! Series six opened with the body of Jon Snow and like in the previous series finale, he looked pretty dead to me unless we get a twist, which we got in the final scene with the Red Witch, Melisandre, showing her true identity appearing to be a 60-a-day cigarette smoking old hag with a full body shot that made my torso look good! It’s great stuff but after ten months off screen, my only gripe was that it was a devil to try to work out all the plot strands from last year, and by no means had we seen all the characters in the season opener. The A-Word finished on BBC 1 on Tuesday and it was must have been done on just half a percent of a daily shoot for Game of Thrones, but what a a little

Back To Business

gem of a drama it has been. The final episode featured the autistic boy Joe going for a walkabout and panic ensuing as everybody tried to find him. Peter Bowker’s script gave us plenty to ponder over the issue of rush judgements and prejudice as a young man with Down’s Syndrome was wrongly suspected of being behind Joe’s disappear-

ance. It all ended happily in a series which totally got it right as it brought autism into the limelight with a touching and often funny storyline played out by a fine cast. The A-Word must surely return for a second series. Not coming back though is Channel Four’s Indian Summers which is having the plug pulled on it after

just two seasons of a planned five year run. That’s a shame as I’ve found series two to be far more focussed than the first season and more entertaining, but that’s broadcasting life. Scheduling it on a Sunday night against The Night Manager was not exactly clever, but then Channel Four hit gold earlier in the year with the enjoyable

Deutschland 83 that held its own against War and Peace. It does show these days that a new drama has to hit the ground running or else there is little that can be done to keep it going even if it is on Channel Four who like to give things a bit of a try. There’s no surprise in my corner that the ratings for ITV’s dreadful Bang On The

Money have bombed to ‘Harry Hill Stars In Their Eyes’ levels, and it’s not been helped by BBC 1 finding something dead simple to run against it. Forget convuluted formats or Getaway Car (what did happen to the rest of the series?). Good old fashioned variety rules the roost with Michael McIntyre’s Big Show recorded at the Theatre Royal and featuring a collection of turns plus the now-established McIntyre gimmick of sending messages on a mobile phone belonging to a celebrity and then splitting his sides at the ensuing replies. Old hat but it works and the Beeb have wasted no time in ordering a second run which shows TV executives that keeping it simple does the business. On a negative note, our Romesh Ranganathan monitoring station (See last week’s column) reports that he is the “star” comedian tomorrow night on the Big Show after a mind-numbingly boring performance on last Friday’s Have I Got News For You. Perhaps he could pop up on Game Of Thrones and be bumped off?

Saturday – BBC Two The Rack Pack, BBC iPlayer’s first ever comedy drama feature film, is being broadcast on BBC Two after the semi-final of the World Snooker Championship, on 30 April at 9.30pm, following its great success on iPlayer. The critically acclaimed film was released exclusively on BBC iPlayer in January and made it into the top 20 most requested titles that month; it has had over 1 million requests in total since, making it the most successful BBC iPlayer Original to date. Directed by Brian Welsh (Glasgow Girls, Black Mirror), this comedy drama explores the glory days of the Seventies and Eighties snooker scene, when huge characters became household names and Snooker Loopy troubled the pop charts. The film is written by Shaun Pye, Mark Chappell and Alan Connor, who are the team behind A Young Doctor’s Notebook. The story tells of the rivalry between Alex ‘Hurricane’

Lesley Howell, and a police officer Trevor Buchanan, have apparently taken their own lives together.… This is the true story of a Sunday school teacher and

a respectable dentist who formed a murderous partnership. In the first episode on Friday, Hazel Buchanan and Colin Howell meet at their local Baptist Church in Coleraine, Northern Ireland and embark upon a passionate and destructive affair, which climaxes in an elaborate plot to commit the “perfect murder” to kill both their partners, Lesley and Trevor, and make it look like a suicide pact. The killers fool the police and get away with murder, but their relationship soon

The Silk Road

Sunday – BBC Four "The Silk Road cut across borders - and broke down the borders in our minds," says Dr Sam Willis, pictured. In a new three-part series for BBC Four, the historian and writer traces the story of the most famous trade route in history.

Tuesday – ITV Ten months on from the first series, child-minder Diane, schoolgirl Rosie, stayat-home mum Jasmin, businesswoman Roanna, midwife Vicky and blog-writer Kim are stumbling into the realities of parenthood together. Following the birth of baby

sours and they separate. They rebuild their lives, each remarrying and prospering, but can never escape what they have done. As a series of disasters befalls Howell, he finally confesses his crimes to the horrified elders of his church. Convicted of murder, Howell implicates Hazel in the killing. Hazel admits involvement but pleads not guilty, claiming she was coerced. In a climactic murder trial, Howell gives evidence against his former lover.

This was the Silk Road which ran from China’s ancient capital Xian through the mythical cities of Central Asia and Persia, until it reached the bazaars of Istanbul and the markets of Venice. It was in Venice and other Italian cities that the ideas, inventions and prod-

ucts that trickled down the Silk Road ignited. They formed - in part - a movement which we call ‘the Renaissance’ - an explosion of new thinking, new art and new inventions. Covering a distance of 5,000 miles and crossing some of the most dramatic landscapes on the planet, Dr Sam Willis reveals how the Silk Road was more than a market place: it was the world's first transcontinental superhighway, along which people with new ideas, new cultures and new religions made exchanges that shaped the development of humanity. In the first episode, Sam begins his journey in Venice, and explores how its Renaissance architecture

and art has been shaped by the East and by thousands of exchanges along the Silk Road. From Venice Sam travels to China’s ancient capital Xian. Here, Sam’s story takes him back in time, to reveal the tale of an Emperor who was so desperate for bigger horses to help protect his borders that he struck one of the most significant trade deals in human history: he wanted war horses, so he gave the most precious material in the world, silk. From this single deal, a network of trading paths was carved out across thousands of miles by merchants, traders, envoys, pilgrims and travellers. It is known to us today as the Silk Road.

The Conspiracy Files: Who Shot Down MH17?

ITV – Tuesday On 17 July 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, travelling from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed, killing 298 passengers in the worst air disaster for two decades. Alarmingly, the devastating crash occurred just four months after the mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH370. Is this just a coincidence? The cause of the crash has been focus of a host of conspiracy theories, many of which involve Russia, Ukraine and the CIA. The official investigation report into MH17 flight argues that only a powerful ground-to-air missile could

be responsible. Yet, there are eyewitness accounts of other aircrafts seen flying next to MH17 close to impact. To further fuel the conspiracies, Russia and Ukraine blame each other but both countries are unable to provide all the critical radar data from that day. Family members do not trust the official explanations and there is a long way to go to bring about justice for the victims. This programme tracks down eye witnesses, and speaks with secret intelligence sources to try to sort fact from fiction. Don’t miss this compelling Conspiracy Files unfold to see whether the mystery can be unravelled.

Her Majesty’s Prison: Norwich

Wednesday – ITV “When you get chucked in a cell and the door locked, that’s when you realise that’s your life for the next 10 to 20 months. It’s a horrible experience. You feel like you’re cut off from the world.” - Liam Poore, first-time prisoner This new documentary for ITV goes behind the walls of Norwich prison to provide a vivid insight into daily life for criminals behind bars, and the effect on them of being separated from their families on the outside. Made by Wild Pictures, producers of the acclaimed ITV prison series HMP Aylesbury, Strangeways and Wormwood Scrubs, this programme depicts how the jail’s 750 adult inmates and young offenders cope with the harsh realities of life inside the closed world of prison. Most of the 2,500 new prisoners who pass through its gates every year are husbands and fathers. Statistics reveal that a fifth of marriages will break up with the strain of one partner serving a prison sentence, yet those who manage to keep family ties alive are six times less likely to reoffend. With exclusive access to HMP Norwich, this programme provides a fresh perspective on how inmates’ contact with their families can be a lifeline while they are inside and helps them turn away from crime once

released. More than half of all offenders coming into prison are dads like Nick Grady. He has three young children at home and is serving a 13year sentence for conspiracy to supply cocaine. As the reception orderly, Nick helps officers process new prisoners and settle them into life inside. He says: “You get a lot of nerves down here, obviously people first-timers. They’re a bit like a rabbit in headlights sometimes. You get obviously the family’s worry, you get parents’ worry, wives, you know? They’re obviously concerned for their partners who are in here.” Nick is two years into a 13year sentence for conspiracy to supply cocaine. In spite of the toll it has taken on his family, his partner is standing by him. He says: “They count it down by Christmases and birthdays to go. It’s four birthdays which doesn’t sound a lot but in real time it’s four years isn’t it? “Austin [my son] has grown up in here, he took his first steps in here pretty much in the visitor’s hall. It’s not new to him, he’s been coming since he was one. “Having seen what my family are going through, the hardness of it. The last year and a half, two years, I’ve watched my little boy grow up from a weekly visit - it’s not what I want.”

How to cook the perfect crisps We may not have the proudest culinary history on the planet, but if there’s one thing the British Isles does well, it’s potato crisps. No other nation can boast such a dazzling kaleidoscope of options. Few of us would turn down a hand-cut heirloom variety, fried in Spanish olive oil and seasoned with a pinch of Himalayan pink salt, yet, deep down, we’re all partial to a cheese and onion Hula Hoop, too. Roast beef and mustard, stilton and port, Marmite, haggis and pepper … you name it, we’ve made crisps out of it. Or, at least,

crisps pretending to taste a bit like it.I’m not claiming you can, or indeed should, ever try to recreate such rarefied gourmet delights at home – but a freshly fried potato crisp is the one flavour you can’t get over the counter. It’s hard to beat a bag of ready salted for soaking up a pint, but if you want something to savour, make your own. But, be warned, it’s a slippery slope. Makes 1 big bowl) 1kg maris pipers or similar potatoes Neutral oil, to fry Salt or other seasoning Slice the potatoes about

3mm thick and put in a large bowl. Rinse in cold water until the water runs clear, then soak for 30 minutes. Heat a large, deep pan about a third full with oil to 160C/320F. Meanwhile, drain the potatoes and dry very well with kitchen towels. Fry in batches (they will take longer if you overcrowd the pan), stirring as you first add them, until golden and crisp. Drain on kitchen paper and season lightly. Eat immediately, or allow to cool, then store in an airtight container (they should be good for 24 hours or so).

The tonic in your G&T doesn't have to be high in sugar Now and again, I settle down to drink two modestly sized G&Ts and consume at least four teaspoons of sugar. I’m not dipping my hand in the sugar bowl – it comes courtesy of the tonic. Good news: there are two lower-sugar tonics (below) that measure up well to a premium gin. I still prefer the taste of 'normal’ but switch to these sometimes. Otherwise, try this: pour 50ml gin into a tumbler with a few ice cubes, add 10ml undiluted elderflower or lime cordial and a few drops of your favourite bitters (mine’s below). Top up with about 100ml cold sparkling water, stir gently, add a tangerine or pink grapefruit slice, and serve. With the recent worry over sweet fizzy drinks, it’s possible to forget that there’s a LOT of sugar in our mixers. Tonic doesn’t taste especially sweet (thanks to the bitter quinine), but it’s there on the

label: a normal tonic (premium or cheap) typically contains 7-8g sugar per 100ml. Four grams equal one teaspoon, therefore two gins with 100ml tonic each makes for four teaspoons. And, actually, I tend to make my gins longer than that... Fentimans Botanical Light Tonic Water. With 5.3g sugar per 100ml and no unpleasant sweeteners added, this light tonic tastes crisp, clean and refreshing. Fever-Tree Naturally Light Tonic Water. The brand’s normal tonic is 8g per 100ml; this one is just 2.9g and has no nasty end flavour. Many gin lovers seriously prefer this mixer over the rest. Regans’ Orange Bitters No.6. A dash or two of these intensely flavoured citrussy bitters adds very little sweetness but plenty of verve to a gin; top up with sparkling water and a wedge of orange.

We put the best charcoal BBQ’s to the test The ultimate test outs for the hottest BBQs on the market We put this year's hottest charcoal barbecues through their paces to help you find the best model for your garden. British-designed and built, the Halo is made with marine-grade stainless steel that won’t rust and has an impressive level of engineering. Double-wall insulation means the outside doesn’t get hot and also makes it more fuel efficient. Not as deep as some other kettle barbecues so you’ll need to bone out large joints if you want to put the lid on, but the heavy grids are dishwasher proof.

Best for: families and Jaguar lovers – the parts for both are cut on the same machines. These Kamado ovens – a Japanese-style ceramic oven with excellent heat retention – were last year’s sensation. I tried out the second smallest version, the MiniMax, and was impressed. It lights easily and comes to temperature quickly, but all cooking is done with the lid down so there’s not much posing with tongs to be done. Meat I cooked in there came out juicy and with a nice touch of smoke even without adding chips. Simple to use, it’s not hard to get impressive results

– no wonder the chefs love it. Best for: serious foodies and cheffie types. Another Kamado oven, Kamado Joes are almost identical to Big Green Eggs. The Joe Junior is slightly larger than the BGE MiniMax – it is said to be portable but at over 30kg, not by me. It worked just as well as the BGE, but the price tag is much lower, plus it comes with the ceramic heat deflector (great for slow cooking) that is extra with the BGE. Larger models also have a split grill option, meaning you can cook both directly and indirectly at the same time,

which is one up on the BGE. Best for: foodies with an eye for value. Webers are the original kettle barbecue and they remain great workhorses. They’re weatherproof too – I’ve got one that’s been outside uncovered for four years and it’s got just a touch of rust around the vent. This larger model has a built-in thermometer (really useful for liddown barbecuing) and a clever system for clearing out the ash. There’s a myriad of accessories available including a pizza oven. Best for: classic, no-fuss barbecuing.

Smoked salmon, pearl barley, walnuts and apples INGREDIENTS 150g pearl barley (uncooked), 300ml water sea salt flakes and freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon standard rapeseed oil finely grated zest and juice of ½ organic lemon 1 teaspoon acacia honey 2 celery sticks 30g fresh baby spinach 1 apple 10g walnuts 160g thinly sliced smoked salmon (or sea trout) METHOD

Rinse the pearl barley well in cold water. Put it in a saucepan, add the 300ml of water and a little salt and bring to the boil. Simmer with the lid on for about 20 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and leave the barley to stand, covered, for 5– 10 minutes. When the barley is done – it should be tender but still al dente – season to taste with salt and pepper. Whisk the oil, lemon zest and juice, honey, salt and pepper together in a bowl to

make a dressing and leave for 5–10 minutes to allow the flavours to develop. Rinse the celery and spinach. Slice the celery very finely and mix with the spinach in a large bowl. Cut the apple into quarters, remove the core and slice it very finely. Add it to the bowl, along with the cooked pearl barley and the walnuts, coarsely chopped. Mix the dressing into the salad and serve it with thin slices of smoked salmon (or sea trout) and some good bread.

Milkmen to make a comeback but they charge twice as much as supermarkets These days in the UK very few families have cold milk delivered to their doorstep

The rise of home grocery deliveries has led to the return of the milkman as one of Britain's biggest dairies has reversed plans to close

its glass bottle factory and cancel the service. Milkmen are on the verge of extinction in Britain with doorstep sales accounting

for just 2.8pc of all milk bought in the UK, down from 89pc in 1980, according to Dairy UK. But under a new project by Müller, the UK's biggest milk deliverer, the familiar early morning clink of glass bottles of milk arriving on the doorstep is set to make a comeback. Müller, which is famous for its yoghurts, is planning a major resurgence in milk doorstep delivery with plans to expand its milkman service after buying it from Dairy Crest last year. Dairy Crest had planned to shut Hanworth Dairy, in west London and phase out all milk in glass bottles. But now Muller has reversed the plans and will expand its service to thousands more families instead. The U-turn will be a welcome reprieve for busy families who value the conven-

ience of the traditional British milkman, as well as glass bottles instead of plastic containers. Müller already delivers milk and other daily essentials to more than 600,000 homes across the country, charging 81p per pint of milk. This compares to 45p a pint

in Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco. A spokesman for Müller said: "The rise in people shopping online and having food delivered at home has led to people getting used to a certain level of convenience. These days families don't have time to go out and buy milk.

Langoustines with tarragon and garlic This delicious meal is best with crusty bread to dip up the juices

INGREDIENTS 1kg langoustines (12–16) 1 very fresh whole garlic bulb 1 handful of tarragon sea salt flakes 50ml olive oil ½ organic lemon freshly ground pepper

METHOD Check that the langoustines are fresh – they should smell of the sea. Place them in a large ovenproof dish. Chop the whole fresh garlic bulb and the tarragon roughly, and sprinkle both over the langoustines. Season with salt and drizzle with the olive oil.

Squeeze most of the juice from the lemon half over the langoustines, then cut it into chunks and add to the langoustines so that the rind provides extra citrus flavour. Place the dish in the preheated oven at 250°C/Gas Mark 10 (or your highest Gas Mark setting) and bake

the langoustines for 8–10 minutes. Of course, you can also cook them outside on the barbecue if you like, and they will cook in no time. Remove the langoustines from the oven and serve immediately, with good bread to dip in the juices in the bottom of the dish.

Neither Scottish nor eggshaped, nor necessarily native to the UK – versions can be found from Hyderabad to Holland, home of the evocatively named gehaktbal kiekeboe or “peekaboo meatball” – the scotch egg is, nonetheless, widely prized as a British classic. Indeed, thanks to its recent gastropub renaissance, this is a golden age for the spherical sausage-meat snack. As ever, there is much to correct in this sphere. Not all such products eggs-el. BTL, we welcome meaty exchanges, but please ovoid causing unnecessary offence. Do not be pig-headed. Be sage. Use well-seasoned arguments. But do not pepper them with salty language.

When and where Paradoxically, a scotch egg seems a bit much at breakfast, but any time after midday it is the perfect interregnum snack – enough to stave off hunger pangs, but in no way a filling meal. Or, at least, that is the idea. Its function as a snack does mean that the scotch egg is often eaten in unsuitable locations. It is known as a picnic food, but, as all sensible folk acknowledge, picnics are appalling. The picnic takes something enjoyable (food) and places it in a situation (wind, rain, sunburn,

wasps, dog turds, damp grass, exhaust fumes) that is intolerable. The only people who enjoy picnics are masochists and children. There are also a lot of scotch eggs eaten in cars, which is equally misguided. If you are eating a scotch egg in a car, it usually means you bought it in a petrol station or supermarket. Not only will it be a sorry specimen (a pallid, rubbery egg rattling around in a thin hollow of grey wet putty), but, in an enclosed environment, the breadcrumbs act as if in a howling sandstorm. They get into every crack and crevice. You end up wearing more scotch egg than you have eaten. You will be picking bits out of your footwell for weeks. No, the best place to eat a scotch egg (and apologies to long-term readers for the predictability of this conclusion) is in the pub – one that makes its own scotch eggs, fried-to-order, so that as you take a bite, the outer shell is still audibly crisp and hot juices run from the meat as you cut into it. A room-temperature scotch egg can be enjoyable, but a warm egg will express itself in an altogether more elevated way. It’s like watching Barcelona play football.

On the side The idea of serving a scotch egg without any sort of garnish, allowing it to stand or fall on its own merits, petrifies chefs. It is partly an aesthetic thing – they are trained to prettify the plate – and partly a crisis of faith in their own ability. A truly great scotch egg is a multi-layered,

self-contained sensory experience. It requires no further elaboration. Evidently, too few chefs feel that is what they have created. There are a small group of simple items you can serve with a scotch egg that bring another acceptable accent to the dish (a tangle of peppery, palate-cleansing watercress; a dab of sharp, punctuating mustard; a spicy, not-toosweet chutney), but none of these are essential. Everything beyond that begins to detract from the eggs-perience. The frequency with which rich and creamy or assertively flavoured sauces (Hollandaise, curried mayo, aioli, chilli jam, ranch dressing, etc) are paired with something as greasy as a scotch egg is frankly bizarre. Fat-on-fat in that kind of cloying concentration is never as fun as it sounds (see also, remoulade). It is too much of a good thing. Attempts to turn the scotch egg into a complete meal (plonking it on a hillock of risotto or a mound of blitzed peas, or serving it with chips) are, likewise, usually inelegant and stodgy. There is a greater logic to serving it with a salad, usually as a starter, but that it is hampered by Britain’s inability to master the salad garnish. It seems to take two forms: a handful of bedraggled, undressed leaves haplessly topped with red onion and tomato, or an OTT extravaganza with croutons and lardons, black pudding or goat’s cheese, the plate smeared with tell-tale skidmarks of balsamic (a signa-

ture of the insecure chef), which, rather than showcasing the scotch egg, entirely overwhelms it.

Skate with brown butter and cockles

SERVES 4 INGREDIENTS 4 portions thornback ray, or skate, about 250g each, Oil, for frying, 125g butter, ½ pint shelled cockles, rinsed, 1 tbsp sherry vinegar. Small bunch of parsley, finely chopped, Squeeze of lemon METHOD Preheat the oven to 120C/250F/Gas ½.  Season the ray portions on both sides. Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry the fish on the thicker-skinned side until golden brown, one at a time or in batches if necessary. Transfer, brown side up, to a baking tray large enough to hold the four pieces of fish (or use two trays).  Transfer the fish to the oven and cook for about 15 minutes. To check the fish is done, use a knife to have a look at the meat by the cartilage. It should no longer be translucent. Season again. Remove from the oven and leave the fish to rest while you make the sauce.   In a small saucepan heat the butter until it turns a nut-brown colour

and smells nutty, too.  Pull the pan off the heat and quickly add the cockles and shake the pan. Now add the sherry vinegar and parsley and check the seasoning. You will need to add a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon.   Serve the fish thickerskinned side up on some seasonal greens, and dress each fish with some cockles and the brown butter sauce, serve with baked new potatoes. BAKED NEW POTATOES INGREDIENTS 400g new potatoes (I like Pink Fir Apple but any will do), Neutral oil, Sea salt, Butter, to serve, Chopped chives, to serve. METHOD Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4.  Rub the potatoes with oil and sprinkle well with salt. Set on a wire rack and bake for 20 minutes. Check they are done by testing tenderness with a small knife.   Allow to cool for 10 minutes and then split in half, rub with butter and sprinkle with chives.

Barbershop: The Next Cut

DIRECTOR Malcolm D. Lee GENRE Comedy SYNOPSIS As their surrounding community has taken a turn for the worse, the crew at Calvin's Barbershop come together to bring some much needed change to their neighborhood. RELEASE DATE 15 April 2016 DURATION 1 Hour 52 mins When Ice Cube released AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted few would have predicted that, two and a half decades later, he’d be the closest thing to Jimmy Stewart in 21st-century cinema. As

Calvin Palmer, co-owner of Chicago’s top-notch locale for stylish ’dos and sagacious bon mots, Ice Cube is a caring father, crafty businessman and, he’ll come to realise, community linchpin. But his neighbourhood is quite different from the Bedford Falls where Stewart’s George Bailey lived in It’s a Wonderful Life. “The south side is no place to flex,” Palmer sighs to his wife Jennifer (Jazsmin Lewis), referring to their 14year-old son Jalen (Michael Rainey Jr). All parents have their woes when the kids hit puberty. Parents in black America have struggles that

seem only to be getting worse. Barbershop: The Next Cut (part three in a trilogy that began in 2002, though no prior knowledge is required here) is directed by Malcolm D Lee, the more commercially minded cousin of firebrand director Spike Lee. Even without the family connection, it’s hard not to think of this as the sunnier, more audience-friendly version of Spike Lee’s midlife masterpiece Chi-Raq. The gimmick of iambic pentameter is missing, but considering the voices of the barbershop work as a built-in Greek chorus, there’s more than

enough theatricality. Barbershop: The Next Cut is hardly subtle, but it is more nuanced than you might expect. Everyone wants the violence to stop, but no government plan gains traction. Raja (Utkarsh Ambudkar), the one “non-negro” worker, offers up some centre-right talking points. Why were his parents able to come to this America without any money and thick accents yet still find success? Terri (Eve) fires back that there is a difference between immigrating and being imported. Neither really convinces the other, but at least they are talking.

The Adventures Of

Hi everybody from TKO Teddy and I hope you are keeping well with all the lovely spring weather upon us and May kicking in from Sunday! I was Benijofar bound last week for a new way of doing a quiz night all in aid of my excellent friends at Samaritans in Spain and we celebrated the Queen’s birthday at the same time. The Oasis restaurant in the square and Restaurant Catorce used computer technology to link themselves up via Skype for a quiz night. I’ve never heard of that before and it allowed me to pop along to both venues to say hello to everybody and I even managed to get the odd question correct, which is quite something! There’s a selection of pictures on my Facebook

page TKO Teddy for you to browse through along with those that I have brought along here. A special hello to the bosses, Stephen and Alex at the Oasis, and to Paul and Martyn at Catorce for hosting this Benijofar first with congratulations to Teresa and her friends at the Oasis for being the winners on the night. Thanks as well to Beverley form the Samaritans in Spain for guiding me around Benijofar where I could see the few raised eyebrows amongst the locals. Don’t forget that I’d love you to post details on my TKO Teddy Facebook page about any events, carnivals, or fiestas that you know about or perhaps are going to, or that you are even organising!

Jeremy Hunt: history will judge me on delivering seven-day NHS Contact@medb.es

Website: www.medb.es

Health secretary says this is likely to be his last big job in politics

Jeremy Hunt has insisted he has no intention of backing down in the junior doctors’ strike, saying his post as

health secretary is likely to be his last big job in politics, and history will judge him on his ability to deliver a seven-day

NHS. On what he called a “bleak day” for the NHS, Hunt said: “This is likely to be my last big job in politics, and the one thing that would keep me awake at night is if I didn’t do the right thing to help make the NHS one of the safest, highest quality health services in the world.” As junior doctors joined picket lines up and down the country for Tuesday’s all-out strike, Hunt said he remained confident he was in the right. “Health secretaries are never popular. But what history judges is, did you take the tough and difficult decisions that enable the NHS to deliver high-quality care for patients? For me, that’s what it’s about.

He insisted he was offering doctors a fair deal, asking: “Is it proportionate or appropriate to be withdrawing emergency care from patients who depend on them so much?” By refusing to provide emergency care as part of their latest walkout, junior doctors are escalating their programme of industrial action, as Hunt battles to push through changes to contracts aimed at making it easier to staff hospitals at weekends. The strike ran from 8am to 5pm on Tuesday and Wednesday. A&E and maternity units were staffed almost entirely by senior consultants. Junior doctors believe that if the new contract is

imposed, they will be insufficiently compensated for unusual working hours, such as weekend shifts. But Hunt insisted: “What we are offering in this new contract for doctors, is more premium pay on a Saturday than the nurses who work in their hospitals, more than paramedics, more than the assistants who work in their own operating theatres, more than police officers, more than fire officers. The British Medical Association (BMA), the doctors’ union, does not reject the idea of a seven-day NHS in principle, but believes the government is failing to provide sufficient additional resources to make the idea workable.

Some sources have suggested the government sees its confrontation with the doctors as political, and believes it must score a symbolic victory, drawing parallels with the humiliating defeat inflicted on striking miners in 1984. Hunt rejected that comparison, saying: “The last thing we are doing is itching for a fight.” However: he added: “I do think that there are some elements at the very top of the BMA that are absolutely refusing to compromise.” He argued that his determination in trying to force through the new working practices was motivated by the fact that the Conservatives had made a manifesto commitment to deliver a seven-day NHS.

How can we help our anxious teenagers? Many head teachers have reported an increase in self-harm A recent survey by the Association of School and College Leaders makes alarming reading. The survey of 338 school leaders found a marked increase in the number of pupils struggling with anxiety and stress during the past five years. Even more worrying, 79% of head teachers reported increases in self-harm and suicidal thoughts among their students. The schools’ own pastoral services are reportedly overwhelmed, even though many of the more serious issues are referred to local Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. However, there are problems here as well. Among those who referred pupils to NHS services, 53% rated the response as 'poor’ or 'very poor’. The Government responded by proposing to invest £1.4 billion in mental health support for young

people in England. This is, however, only the most basic of beginnings. We know that in the past, money allocated to mental health services has later been re-allocated elsewhere, so the money must be ring-fenced. It’s important, too, to ensure that services are appropriate—for example, offering group support rather than individual sessions may save money, but my experience tells me that joining a group of strangers is likely to feel too difficult for most highly anxious teenagers. We also need to offer everyone follow-up services. Offering a standard package, without such provision, means that for many, any gains made during treatment will not be maintained. Finally, allocating money merely for training therapists, without also providing

them with adequate ongoing supervision, means that when those therapists feel out of their depth, they’ll have nowhere to turn. Besides demanding the provision of skilled, ongoing, targeted mental health care services for all pupils, what can parents do to help when their own children suffer high levels of stress and anxiety? Four ways parents can help anxious teenagers Start by resolving to listen fully when they want to talk to you, and don’t rush to judge them. If they see that you value them enough to stop everything else to listen, and if they know you’re listening with an open mind, they may well start to feel more confident, and that in itself will alleviate anxiety. Second, limit screen use in the home—and that includes you as their role model. Unlimited screen use encourages the production

of high levels of cortisol, and as a result everyone will feel tense and distractible. It’s particularly important to turn off all screens 20 minutes before bedtime. This will definitely improve sleep quality—and it’s easier to control anxiety when we’re rested. Third, do all you can to open lines of communication between parents and teachers at your children’s school. When everyone is in touch, chances are high that any serious problems will be picked up early. Finally, praise your children—genuinely and often—for the effort they put into their schoolwork, more than for the results they achieve. Results are not entirely in their control, but they alone decide how much effort they’ll put in. Praising effort, instead of focusing purely on what they acheive, will help them feel calmer and more in control.

7 Most Nutritious foods

Kale is probably the most nutritious of green leafy green vegetables. 100 gms Of Kale contains 2- 10 times the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin A, B6, and C, K1, potassium, magnesium, calcium and man-

ganese. Kale also contains many other vitamins, minerals and countless other beneficial nutrients. Kale contains isothiocyanates and indole-3carbinol compounds that have been shown to fight cancer in test tubes and animal

studies. Salmon is packed full of essential Omega-3 oil. And Omega-3 is essential for maintaining the heart and nervous system. Salmon is also an excellent source of proteins, selenium and many vitamins and minerals including vitamin B complex, Vitamin D, magnesium and potassium. Seaweed is a broad term for many plants that grow in the sea, many of which contain more nutrients than land plants. Seaweed is rich in minerals such as manganese, calcium, magnesium and iron. However, Seaweed is unique among plants because they are excellent sources of iodine. Avocados contain many nutrients, especially healthy fats such as stilbesterol that

regulates cholesterol. Avocados also contain impressive amounts of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that protects the body against toxic free radicals that trigger inflammation. Beans contain many different nutrients, with black beans containing the most nutrients. They contain abundant amounts of protein and soluble fibre. Soluble fibre controls blood sugar levels, a benefit for people suffering from diabetes. Beans also contain high amounts of magnesium, that helps reduce blood pressure and prevent constipation. Broccoli is without a doubt the most useful food for fighting cancer. Broccoli and other members of the cauliflower family: Kale, Brussel sprouts and cabbage, contain more

variety of cancer-fighting chemicals than any other group of plants. Many studies have shown that people with a diet rich in broccoli and cruciferous vegetables have lower incidences of many types of cancer including cancers of the lung, bowel and breasts. Broccoli also has impressive quantities of sulphur containing compounds that fight infections. Dark Chocolate contain more antioxidants than any

other food. Antioxidants counteract toxic free radicals that damage the heart and brain causing diseases such as heart attacks, strokes and Alzheimer’s. Dark chocolate is also a good source of some nutrients including magnesium. Some studies show that dark chocolate prevents diabetes. Royals want to 'help change national conversation on mental health' The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry want to "help change the national conversation" on mental health. They are leading a campaign called Heads Together which will be the biggest single project they have undertaken together. It will be a partnership with charities with experience in

tackling stigma, raising awareness, and providing help for people with mental health challenges. The campaign will be the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon Charity of the Year, taking the baton from the NSPCC. A spokesman for William, Kate and Harry said: "Through their work with young people, emergency response, homeless charities, and with veterans, their royal highnesses have seen time and time again that unresolved mental health problems lie at the heart of some of our greatest social challenges. "They are pas-

sionate about tackling the stigma surrounding the issue. Too often, they have seen that people feel afraid to admit that they are struggling with their mental health. "This fear of prejudice and judgment stops people from getting help and can destroy families and end lives. "They want to help change the national conversation." The spokesman said the three are "incredibly grateful to be working with charities who have achieved so much in the fight against the stigma that surrounds the issue". He added: "They want the Heads Together campaign to

build on the great work that is already being done across the country so that prejudice and fear no longer stand in the way of people getting the help they need. "They want people to feel much more comfortable with their everyday mental wellbeing and have the practical tools to support their friends and family." The team of charity partners working on Heads Together includes Best Beginnings, CALM - The Campaign Against Living Miserably, Contact (a military mental health coalition), Mind, Place2Be, The Mix and YoungMinds.

The Three Daves (Attenborough, The Barman, And Me!)

A STRANGER came into the pub the other evening. As usual, we startled regulars scarpered to the far end of the bar, dragging a semicomatose Ol' Red Eyes behind us. We lifted the ancient codger onto a stool, secured him by his trouser braces to a redundant beer pump and proceeded to gawp at the newcomer. 'Blimey,' commented Dave the barman. 'You lot look like a bunch of nervous bush babies during a visit from David Attenborough.' Daft Barry squinted through the gap in Ol' Red Eyes' braces and gasped: 'What's David Attenborough doing in our pub?' Apart from being our guide and mentor, Andromeda Arkwright was also our designated meeter and greeter. She approached the

stranger. 'May I welcome you to our hostelry, young sir.' 'Get him to buy a drink!' hissed Dave the barman through smiling teeth. 'That's not David Attenborough,' said a disappointed Daft Barry. 'That's just a feller.' 'Indeed, Barry,' I concurred. 'The stranger is way too young to be David Attenborough -- although he IS old enough to be my son.' 'That's because I AM your son, Dad,' said the stranger. 'I'm in shock!' I gasped and collapsed to the floor on top of Ol' Red Eyes whose hitherto restraining braces had snapped. 'Should I fetch a doctor?' asked Dave the barman. 'Or maybe a priest would be more appropriate.' 'It's too serious for a priest,' chorused Indoor Lou and Fearful Phil. 'Let's fetch the

bishop.' 'I don't think so,' said Daft Barry. 'A bishop would be too slow to get here. Bishops can only move diagonally, you know.' 'Oh, do shut up, Barry!' said Dave the barman. 'This is no mere game of chess. This could be a matter of life and death. Dave Silver could have expired as we speak.' 'Nah, he's not dead,' croaked Ol' Red Eyes. 'But I might die if you don't get him off me!' My fellow pubsters hauled me to my feet and seated me on a stool while Dave the barman brought me over a pint of water -- mein host's signature drink. 'So how come Dave Silver didn't recognise his own son?' asked the permanentlybarred Fag Ash Bill who had dimped his cigarette on the pavement so he could enter

the pub to find out what was going on. 'I'll tell you why,' said my son who had sparked Dave the barman into a state of ecstasy by purchasing a double Scotch. 'No, no, let me give you my own take on this dramatic father-son reunion,' said Andromeda Arkwright, an incurable romantic. We all gathered round as Andromeda launched into her starry-eyed version of reality. 'Many moons ago, our David and the faithful Mrs S were mired in poverty. Then Mrs S found herself with child. 'A boy was born but realising that he would struggle in this cruel world, David and Mrs S gave the boy away to a comfortably-off couple. 'However, one dark and stormy night, the now grown-

up young man found out the truth and vowed to trace his real parents. His first stop was this very pub. The end.' After a long silence, Indoor Lou and Fearful Phil chorused: 'That story was rubbish.' 'I agree,' said Fag Ash Bill. 'It was hardly worth putting out my cigarette for.' 'I concur,' croaked Ol' Red Eyes. 'I used to be an English teacher and if one of my pupils had handed in a composition like that, I would have had him expelled.' Dave the barman also nodded in agreement. 'That narrative was absolute garbage. I think somebody needs to get in a round of drinks to get over the disappointment. Any offers?' Andromeda Arkwright hanged her head in shame. 'I am so sorry, chaps. That story was not up to my usual

standard because I rushed it. 'The truth is I am anxious to get home to watch the latest episode of Long Lost Family. That Nicky Campbell is gorgeous.' After Andromeda had left and Fag Ash Bill had returned outside, Dave the barman turned to my son. 'When did you last see your father?' 'A few weeks ago,' sighed my son. 'I visit my mum every Friday after work but Dad's usually out at the pub when I arrive.' 'So what's with the fainting fit?' asked Dave the barman, glaring at me. 'My dad is a drama queen,' said my son. And then everyone started to glare at me -everyone except Daft Barry who appeared puzzled. 'I don't understand,' he confessed. 'What has all this got to do with David Attenborough?'

Appropriate Footwear for Driving

As May is upon us, we still have to expect a little bit of spring-like rain, but our attention is staring to focus on the realisation that the temperature is starting to rise, and we get set for a long, dry and hot summer in Spain. As we do, there are a number of considerations we have to think of, and many of the most common questions start to raise their heads once more, especially about footwear and clothing. One of those common questions is “can I drive in flip flops”. The answer is that although flip flops are not prohibited as such, it is certainly not advisable, and you can be fined for wearing inappropriate footwear,

which would include flip flops, beach shoes, diving flippers and high heels, amongst others. Flip flops and sandals are considered by far the most dangerous of all inappropriate footwear. Shoes which don´t fit securely may fall off when driving and can get in the way of the pedals. Equally dangerous is how the foot can slip whilst the shoe remains in contact with the pedal, thus reducing braking time and causing a considerable risk when stopping. High heels also pose their own problems, largely because these shoes are designed to alter the shape of the foot and ankle in order

to raise the profile of the wearer. That´s all very well for a glamorous stroll through a prestigious event, but when sitting in a driving position the shape of the shoe prevents correct contact with the pedals, again reducing the response time. Wearing appropriate footwear is a must when driving. When you think about the physical process required to make a vehicle go, turn or stop, all of the actions are performed by our hands and feet. With the laws relating to driving, the Reglamento General de Circulacion, article 3.1 says that, ”You have to drive properly avoiding damage to people / things. It

is forbidden to drive in a negligent or reckless way.” Although driving in a “reckless” manner might not be the norm for most, it is the word “negligent” which can lead to fines when a person doesn´t realise that they are doing anything wrong. When you drive with flip flops the risk of being involved in an incident is multiplied. For example, when you drive back home from the beach, your flip flops might be wet and be covered with sand, therefore you have a high risk of losing your flip flops whilst driving or when you use your car pedals. With Flip flops you cannot break or accelerate properly, as they are slippy and loose from your feet, providing less traction under foot. ALL these factors can end in a traffic incident and can therefore result in you being the cause of such an incident, by driving in a negligent manner. Supposing a lack of control of the clutch makes the car lunge forward and hit something in front, or the reaction time is reduced due to stumbling feet and you are unable to stop before hitting an obstacle, if it is likely that the inappropriate footwear was a contributing factor, the driver may well see a fixed penalty notice issued.

Similarly, if an insurance company decides that inappropriate footwear was a contributing factor, it may lessen the compensation amount in the event of a claim. There are many documented cases of people driving in flip flops or with high heels who have had an incidents where their footwear have been a contributing factor. So there is NO specific article which prohibits the use of any kind of footwear, article 3.1 can be applied to those drivers who have or may be involved in an incident as a consequence of this or not driving properly. There is a similar situation in the U.K. incidentally, and although we might consider it unique to Spain, it isn´t. Perhaps the number of recorded incidents increase as there is more of a likelihood to visit the beach on a regular basis in certain areas of Spain than in the U.K. In the UK, Rule 97 of the Highway Codes states that before setting off, you should ensure that “clothing and footwear do not prevent you using the controls in the correct manner”. If we consider a driver who is barefoot, for example, there is nothing illegal about this in U.K. law, but controlling the clutch, and even the

brakes, can require a lot of pressure, which may prove difficult if a driver is barefoot. Feet can sweat and reduce the traction and wearing of socks or stockings is not ideal either, on account of the pressure needed. This would also result in a potential negligence case in Spain. Other than in the Highway Code, there is no specific law about footwear in the UK, but wearing inappropriate footwear could contribute to an incident for which accountability could be deemed to be the driver´s if they have not adhered to the rule, and are prevented from using the controls in the correct manner, the same as in Spain. As for choosing the most appropriate shoe for driving, comfort is important and a flat shoe that will not easily slip off is best, not too wide and secure. You can buy specific driving shores, but laced, velcro or secure slipon plimsolls or trainers are ideal, so long as they are flat, with rubber grip on the underside which provides excellent traction and control over the pedals. Shoes that allow the driver to feel the pedal through the shoe, whilst still being able to apply sufficient pressure without discomfort, are the best for the job.

Carrying Animals in Cars

We have been asked a question by Eric Brew regarding carrying dogs in in cars, asking “Can you please give me up to date Law information regarding transporting dogs in cars are they allowed on the back seat”. Animals are permitted in private vehicles, but must be properly restrained using appropriate harnesses or equipment, and so the answer is yes, they are

allowed on the back seat, but only if they are secured. As we look at the law, it clearly says that having an animal in the vehicle that could interfere with the driver is illegal and can result in a fine, so a dog sat loose on the front seat for example is not allowed. Carrying animals which are not properly restrained is dangerous to them too. The same applies for cases, cages and boxes with the

animal inside, they too must be properly secured. Animals are unpredictable, especially in environments they are unsure of or not used to. If loose, they could interfere with the driver´s ability or visibility. In the event of a crash, the animal would suffer considerable injury and, most likely, death. There are a wide range of security devices available for animals, from boxes and cages, which must also be secured as mentioned, to harnesses which link to the security elements of the vehicle, some adapting the existing seatbelts, others using security points designed for child seats for example. It is not just appropriate to have your dog attempt to wear the seatbelt designed for human passengers, only the appropriate device for them. Incidentally, if you are found to have an animal loose in the vehicle, there is an 80 euro fine. If you have a question you would like answering by the N332 team, you can email The Courier at thecourier@tko.media, who will forward it on for you and have your answer published here.

Why Do So Many Companies Fail at Creating Value? The concept of creating value is one of the most misunderstood ideals in business, but it's also one of the most essential. Why? Because of all the ways that “value” can affect your company. After all, it's due to a brand’s perceived value that individuals want to do business with you, it’s what separates your brand from the countless others out there. SO WHAT IS VALUE AND HOW DO WE MEASURE IT? When most people think of a company’s value, they're actually referencing economic value. This means a measure of a financial performance that's calculated by deducting the cost of capital from its operating profit. However, a business can also have what's known as 'intangible value' and assets that are not physical in nature. Things like intel-

lectual property, goodwill and brand recognition all play a part in this. HOW DO THE MOST SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES IDENTIFY VALUE AND HOW DO THEY CREATE IT WHEN OTHERS FAIL? While these intangibles may be hard to measure in terms of actual dollars, we can calculate their value best via consumer feedback and how the company’s bottom line compare to others within the industry. One of the best examples that I’ve heard of this was a speech made several years ago by Aswath Damodaran, who's a professor of Finance at NYU’s Stern School of Business. He was speaking at the L2 Innovation Forum and gave a great example of a how soda brand's name can be considered a key intangible value.

In terms of soft drinks, there are thousands of different types of colas, and yet when you look at market share, there's a huge different between Coca Cola and RC cola. The basic formula for both sodas is virtually the same, and yet, Coke was recently estimated to have assets totaling $90.9 billion compared to Cott Beverages (the parent company of RC) whose assets are estimated to be worth $1.6 billion. To some degree, you can attribute the differences to higher marketing budgets and smarter overall business practices, but Damodaran discussed how people perceive the two brands, with Coke consistently ranking higher in term of customer-added value. So, given the choice of drinking both an RC and a Coke, more consumers reach for the recognized brand name because of

the personal association. HOW VALUE IS CREATED AT DIFFERENT LEVELS Although there are many ways that intangible values can be created, there are four main ideals that every good brand manager must consider. Creating value through perceived credibility - Does your business keeps it word when it comes to promises made to both consumers and board members? If so, this can go a long way towards maintaining a healthy brand value. Creating value through vision - This refers to how your company has a demonstrated path forward in terms of company growth. Communicating growth instills confidence as people like to see how their favorite brand plans for the future of both the business and the communities that they serve.

Mercury will start its transit of the Sun, visible in Torrevieja starting at 1312 finishing at 2040.I have bought a sun filter for my 102 Stellavue telescope my camera is a Canon EOS 1100D, equipped with a T piece.Having seen some of your excellent astronomical photographs, I wonder if you have some advice on how to photograph this coming this rare transit. Regards David.

A

Hi David, I have not tried any Sun pictures yet, to be frank I’m a little afraid of pointing anything that magnifies towards the Sun! I have a Canon 1100D as well and use backyard EOS to take images and find it an excellent piece of software, you can find it here… https://www.otelescope.com/ …I’m happy to help set it up for you? Do you have a motorised mount? Your telescope looks great; it should give you some amazing shots!

Q

Hi Liesl / Richard,I realise that it is April Fool's Day, but I have had a pop-up from AVG saying that my "free trial" is now at an end, and I must buy an annual, or get a 40% discount on a two-year deal.Is this for real, and if so, does any other firm offer free protection.Cheers Robin..

A

Hi Robin, the only reason that AVG would tell you that your free trial had run out would be if you had opted to “upgrade” to their 30-day trial of “AVG Antivirus Pro”, if this is the case then you can remove that version of their software and re-download and install the free version. I have been thinking for some time however that AVG’s marketing tactics have taken a turn for the worse, they are certainly creating more pop-ups and confusing messages trying to encourage (or some might say fool) you into upgrading to their paid for software. I am thinking more and more now of recommending Avast as my first choice AV product, but until I have used it for a few months myself I will reserve judgement (watch this space!)

Rafael Nadal showed who’s the boss on and off the court earlier in the week by beating defending champion Kei Nishikori 6-4, 7-5 to win the Barcelona Open for the ninth time on Sunday, equalling Guillermo Vilas' record of 49 career clay-court titles. He then announced on Monday that he was going to sue a former French health minister over what he said were slanderous allegations that he was a drugs cheat. Nadal added the Barcelona title to his trophy from Monte Carlo last week as the 14-time Grand Slam winner regained form on his favourite surface ahead of next month's French Open. Nishikori had won the tournament for the last two years after early exits by Nadal. In an entertaining clash of the two top-seeded players, Nadal proved more decisive under pressure, saving seven of eight break chances in the first set while converting the two chances he got. Nadal

then bettered second-seeded Nishikori through several superb rallies in a back-andforth second set to win key points and claim his 69th career title in his 101st final. The following day, the Spanish ace revealed that has filed a defamation lawsuit against former French sports minister Roselyne Bachelot after she accused him of covering up a failed drugs test. Nadal has also written to the president of the International Tennis Federation and asked for all of his drug-test results and blood profile records to be made public as he looks to draw a line under the matter. "Through this case, I intend not only to defend my integrity and my image as an athlete but also the values I have defended all my career," said world number five Nadal. "I also wish to prevent any public figure from making insulting or false allegations against an athlete using the media, without any evidence or foundation."

Marathon Reward

Over 30 runners from the Pilar de la Horadada area have had their achievements recognised by having their names put on a new Muro del Esfuerzo (Wall of Effort) at the David Martinez athletics track. 32 plates have been erected

on the track wall to acknowledge local athletes who have completed a full marathon with a special ceremony to take place each year to add new names on the Saturday before the annual Pilar HalfMarathon.

Orihuela Costa-based brother and sister Adam and Lucy Stewart returned to Spain with a seven medal haul at the DSSF European Open Down Syndrome Swimming Championships at the Quays Swimming Complex in Southampton. Competiting as part of the Spanish team, Adam won six

medals from his nine events which included gold for the 100 metres butterly and silver in the 1500 metres where he improved his personal best by an impressive two minutes. His overall tally was one gold; four silver; and a bronze. Lucy won a bronze plus a personal best in the 50

metres breaststroke and personal bests in her other two races. This was a great achievement as she had not been in the pool training very often because of illness and her other passion of flamenco dancing! 200 swimmers from as far away as Australia and Brazil took part in the tournament along with a strong European contingent. Spain won over 25 medals and the cup for the most improved relay team by making it into the finals. As for Adam and Lucy, their success was boosted by all the help and advice from Miguel Carlos who gave up his free time to swim against Adam in training along with the new ASA training coach Lesley Jackson who at her own expense and time was around on both days of the competition to make sure that all of her training produced results. The successful siblings also showed their gratitude to their parents Pauline and Greg for all their support at all of their countless training sessions.

The nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi won the Spanish Moto GP at Jerez on Sunday with a dominant pole-to-flag ride for the 113th victory of his career in all categories. The 37-year-old Yamaha rider kept his Spanish teammate and reigning world champion, Jorge Lorenzo, comfortably behind him to take the chequered flag with his front wheel in the air in celebration. It was his 87th win in the top class. Lorenzo finished second for his 100th career podium place with the championship leader and fellow Spaniard, Marc Márquez, in third place for Honda. After four of the season’s 18 races and the first round in Europe, Márquez has 82 points, Lorenzo 65 and Rossi 58. "This was the perfect weekend," said Rossi. "The bike in the race was fantastic...I had a good pace, a good start, I feel good with the bike from the beginning so I can push. It was a special taste, a win like this."

Kuhn Exit The visiting Star club rolled up for a two wicket win last Saturday at Torrevieja in the first match for both teams in the East and Central Cricket League, which was Valencia’s first ever league game, and worth the long journey for them. Torrevieja chose to bat first on what turned out to be a decent batting track after winning the toss and although Leigh Blann was punishing the bowlers, the first wicket fell in the third over with 20 runs on the board. Batsmen came and went but no-one seemed to be able to hand around as

Leigh was still scoring freely. However, even he fell to some accurate bowling but only after he had mustered 62 runs in just 20 overs. Ciaran Guichard came in and steadily pushed the score along but with the last man with him at the crease they managed to hold out to complete the overs. Ciaran finished on 37 not out whilst Babar was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 24 Valencia commenced their replay slowly and soon lost their first wicket for 11 runs. There then followed a procession of able batsmen who, while not setting the

game alight, moved the score along at a steady pace with Sohail (42 ), Zabi (43), Noman (26), and Harjinder (36 not out ) being the main contributors. Valencia reached their target in the 35th over with nearly five overs to spare and two wickets in hand, after Torry put down a crucial catch late on. Torrevieja’s leading wicket taker was Michael Wareing with 4 for 54. Torrevieja’s next match is tomorrow(Saturday) at 11.00am, when they entertain Madrid’s second team. There’s more information at torrevieja-cricket.com

Torrevieja’s tennis teenager Nicola Kuhn lost in the second round of the ITF Futures tournament in Tunisia this week, going down 7-6, 6-3 in a tight 130 minute battle against Chilean, Cristóbal Saavedra. Kuhn had beaten Argentian, Juan Pablo Paz in the first round.

The Back Peg Question

An issue often debated by golf club and society committees is whether general play should be allowed from the White tees. The question being: Would allowing everyday use of the back pegs damage a unique feature of the course and detract from its value? So what are the key arguments for allowing general play from the white plates? When a golfer pays a green fee at a club, they have a level of expectation. They will, of course, hope to experience the course in decent condition. They will also be looking for a good test, representative of their ability. By giving options in terms of the tees, this latter expectation will be realised by the maximum number of players. Low handicap golfers appreciate the chance to play from the White tees to see how challenging a layout can be. They may not choose to take the option, but to have the chance gives added

value. If a visitor has paid the full green fee they might reasonably expect to play the full course. In challenging times, golf clubs must be very aware of customer expectations and should seek to match these in all feasible ways. Every visitor is a potential marketing tool. If they enjoy a day’s golf, they’re likely to report back to friends and colleagues or post about their good experience on social networking websites. No club wants a visitor going away with a complaint about an aspect of their day. If a group of mixed ability is deciding between two similar venues for an event and they learn that one will allow play from the back pegs but the other wont, it could decide which club receives the business. Members too are increasingly aware of what they get in return for their annual sub. For many, allowing general

play from the white tees might be another tick in the box when it comes to selecting a club for membership. It should be pointed out that, even if a club permits general play from the white plates, most golfers will continue to go from the yellows. The average handicap of male golfers remains around 15, and most of those who play the game do so for fun. For the majority it’s not fun if it’s too difficult, so they’ll opt to play the course in its easier guise. This is evidenced by modern, resort-style, courses where four or five teeing options are available. It’s incredibly rare to see players choosing the White tees. In the main they will play from the Yellow plates. At courses with multiple teeing grounds there’s generally a recommendation on which set to use, based on handicap. A recommendation that the White Tees should be only for golfers below a certain handicap.

Yes, there would be the occasional hero playing off 28 who fancied his chances, but the majority would take the recommendation on board. At some courses here, the can be an option for men to play from the Red Tees and the Slope amended accordingly, likewise Ladies from Yellow and White. Through the summer months, the yellow tees can take a pummeling. Towards the end of the season, visiting golfers (and members) will be asked to play from tee boxes sadly lacking in grass and strewn with divots. Meanwhile, some 15-50 yards behind are pristine teeing grounds that have seen barely any play over the previous months. Wouldn’t it make sense to spread the traffic? If a small percentage of players chose to hit from the back Tees it would give a partial rest to the tired boxes. There are forceful arguments for permitting gen-

eral play from the White tees, but there’s also a convincing case for not allowing it. One of the most compelling reasons to prevent general use of the medals is slow play. This is, possibly, the most significant problem in golf today and anything that exacerbates the issue is surely unwelcome. At many courses, the back tees bring an increased number of hazards and obstacles into the equation. There may be long carries to the fairway, or areas of rough designed to catch errant shots during competition. Allowing general play from these tees will result in more looking for balls, more provisionals being played and, therefore, more time to get round. In addition, the extra length of the course will inevitably mean the average golfer takes more shots. Generally, if a club allows all-comers the chance to play off the backs, only those capable

will do so. But, if just one group of novices punch above their weight, play from the Whites and take five hours to get round, then the course is backed up for the rest of the day. The golfing purist may argue that a layout should be played at its most challenging. But, tell that golfing purist they’ll have to spend an extra hour on the course in order to do it and their view might change. Golfers paying a hefty green fee or substantial annual sub are looking to obtain value for money. Visitors, in particular, may feel hard done by if they’re not allowed to play a course at its full length. Members too may feel disgruntled by this if they don’t play in competitions. However, members may also feel they are not getting value for money if their medal tees are worn because general play has been allowed. Again, it all depends on the profile of golfers playing the course through the year.

TITTER ON THE TEE An old man goes to the Wizard to ask him if he can remove a curse he has been living with for the last 40 years. The Wizard says, 'Maybe, but you will have to tell me the exact words that were used to put the curse on you.' The old man says without hesitation, 'I now pronounce you man and wife.'

KNOW YOUR RULES In a match, before playing his own tee shot at the 10th hole, Arthur looks in Ron’s bag to ascertain what club his used. What is the ruling? A: There is no penalty. B: Arthur loses the hole. C: Arthur is disqualified. There is no penalty (Decision 8-1/10). Information obtained by ANSWER observation is permissible. However, if Arthur had removed a towel covering Ron’s clubs that would be a breach of the rule in Matchplay with a loss of hole, and in strokeplay, two strokes. Fans applauded the team as when the whistle was blown to start the match, all 11 players sat down on the pitch for a full minute in protest at the non-appearance of their wages. It all had a familiar ring to it after the club’s financial woes of 2009 and 2010. The match itself got off to a pedestrian start, but it all changed on the half-hour with an exquisite strike from just outside the box from

Luis Carlos won the ball from his opponent close to the halfway line, and then accelerated forward leaving his would be markers in his wake. He lifted his head up and saw the Recambios keeper off his line and chipped a sweet shot flush against the crossbar. The keeper managed to smack the rebound clear just before it could be slotted home. Lewis Allen was working his socks off as usual, chasing down defenders

and making intelligent runs into the channels to worry the visitors. He fetched a loose ball down the right hand side and showed expert technical ability in squeezing it home in the 37th minute from a very acute angle, providing Torry with a two goal advantage at the interval. Higon stepped up his performance in the second period and got his just rewards with a third Torry goal in the 63rd minute after his persistence paid off. Recambios Colon were battling harder in the second half and pulled one back after Torry failed to clear a cross into the goal area. It was no more than a consolation as Torry carved out several more terrific chances but Prieto, Lewis,

Friday 29 April Selvas and Chupe all failed to deliver the final killer blow. Recambios pressed forward with purpose also and they too wasted several first rate opportunities. It was all rather easy for CD Torrevieja who illustrated the fact they they really should have been play- off candidates this summer, a realistic expectation that was destroyed by a shambolic sequence of performances and results last autumn that created a real relegation fear. The financial irony is that had Torry got into that play-offs, then the gate receipts from the matches would have covered all the outstanding monies owed to the players. The team head to Ibi this Sunday to play Rayo Ibense.

Kike Granados of Valencian regional league side CD Almoradi made national headlines this week after he took things too far in protesting at getting sent-off. The player’s rage saw him head butt the referee during his side’s Group Four Preferente match at Villajoyosa last Sunday, and now 34-year old Granados has been handed out a 22 match ban by the Valencian FA. His clean disciplinary record meant that he was given the minimum suspension which was split into 12 games for hitting the referee; eight matches for attempted assault; and two for verbal abuse. Sunday’s drama unfolded when referee Morales Lorente waved a second yellow card at the former CD Torrevieja and Mar Menor player with Granados losing his rag, claiming that he suffered a serious leg injury in a clash with a Villajoyosa man who was yellowcarded as well. Almoradi wrote to the official and the Valencia FA apologising for what happened, saying that though the incident was inexcusable, Granados had always behaved well during his time with the club.

Barca Favourites For Niguez Gareth Bale scored twice to rescue Real (minus an injured Ronaldo) in a dramatic victory at city neighbours Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. The Welshman scored either side of half-time to help Los Blancos come from 2-0 down at the Vallecas to secure all three points and keep up the pressure at the top of La Liga, as they remain a point behind leaders Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. The Ilicitanos defence was rock solid as the home side domianted the first half in terms of possession, though top scorer Sergio León produced a fine individual effort for Elche in the 26th minute which hit the post. Alavés came out strongly at the start of the second period and though again they had most of the ball, Elche keeper Javi Jiménez didn’t have any great saves to make, and the Ilicitanos were well content with their precious point from the Basque region. Elche are one of three teams on 53 points, with Zaragoza two points ahead occupying third place, as the Segunda division table continues to be tight. Elche have a golden opportunity this Sunday afternoon to boost their play-off bid as they entertain second-bottom Albacete with a 5.00pm kick-off.

Dele Alli Accepts Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli has accepted an FA charge of violent conduct after punching West Brom player Claudio Yacob in the stomach and is likely to miss the rest of the season. The punishment for violent conduct is usually a three-game ban. The incident, which happened in the 26th minute, was not in the referee's report on the match, which ended 1-1 on Monday. However, it was caught by television cameras. England international Alli, 20, was named as the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year on Sunday. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said he had not seen the incident, but added after the game: "Sometimes the opponents find him and try to provoke. They know he has a strong character and may react." Off-the-ball incidents missed by the officials are referred to a panel of three former elite referees to decide on any sanction.

Manuel Neuer of Bayern Munich, but hits the post.

FA Charge Alli has been a hugely influential figure in his debut season for Tottenham. The former MK Dons player has scored 10 goals so far and has formed an impressive partnership with striker Harry Kane. Second-placed Spurs are seven points adrift of Leicester with three games left. The Foxes can win the title on Sunday with victory at Manchester United.Spurs are the last team left with a chance of catching Leicester, but a seven-point gap at the top means defeat at Chelsea on Monday night will spell the end of their challenge whatever the outcome at Old Trafford a day earlier.

Where were the City strikers on Tuesday night? A dark blue Ronaldo-less bus was parked in front of the Real Madrid goal at the Etihad in the first leg semifinal of the Champions League, writes JOHN McGREGOR. Man City have been in good form recently scoring freely, like 3 – 0 against Chelsea and 4 – 0 against Stoke on Saturday. But Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero et al always had hard marking men around them and looked strangely stifled as the English Blues struggled in vain to unlock the Spanish defence. Jesus Navas must improve his crosses (all jokes intended) to find his strikers, numerous chances were wasted on Tuesday by the Spaniard. Indeed it was Joe Hart who was once again City’s hero this season with two vital late saves. Real even hit the bar, nearer than City ever got to a goal, albeit a late lone free

kick from de Bruyne was pushed over the bar. Now it’s everything to play for in the second leg in Madrid next Wednesday. One positive point about City is that they are a fast counter-attacking team when they get it right, and with Cristiano Ronaldo back from a thigh injury Los Blancos will be going for it to hopefully leave some gaps. City manager Manuel Pellegrini has been the manager at Real (who hasn’t) and doesn’t fear them: ‘I don't think Real are favourites. We are not afraid to go away to the Bernabeu.’ Brave words, Manuel … In the bearpit that is the Bernabeu that obvious confidence could bode well for City although ominously Zinedine Zidane’s side have not conceded a Champions League goal at home – yet - this season. City’s usually-reliable goal machine attack will need to be better oiled next week,

perhaps with the missing Yaya Toure back to boost the Blues. This semi-final is the furthest City have got so far in Europe and after a disappointing Premier League season a wonderful win in the Spanish capital would mean reaching the Champions League Final and even losing there would mean former Real boss Manuel Pellegrini could bow out on a fantastic high from his time in Manchester. His successor at the Etihad, the great Spaniard Pep Guardiola arrives in the close season – and right now Pep’s under pressure as his Bayern Munich side also struggled to score in the other Champions League semi-final, Atletico winning 1 – 0 at the Vicente Calderon. One solitary goal in two huge semi-finals is a poor return for excitement, let’s hope for more in the return legs next week – preferably light blue ones.

FOOTBALL Mamadou Sakho has decided not to challenge the results of his failed drugs test and is not expected to play for Liverpool again this season. Sakho, 26, tested positive for what is thought to be a type of fat burner after the Europa League win against Manchester United on 17 March.

CYCLING British Cycling chief executive Ian Drake insists the organisation is not in crisis following the resignation of technical director Shane Sutton amid claims of sexism and discrimination. The governing body is investigating claims Sutton, 58, used derogatory words to describe Paracyclists.

FOOTBALL Watford say they will discuss the future of manager Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of the season. The Spaniard, 51, was appointed in June of last year following the club's promotion from the Championship. The Hornets are 12th in the Premier League but have won just twice in 11 league games and lost their FA Cup semi-final with Crystal Palace. "The club would stress it is very happy with the job Quique and his staff have done this season," a statement read.

CAZORLA’S RETURN

Cazorla, whose return from a knee injury was delayed by ongoing Achilles problems, is in contention to face the Canaries five months after completing the reverse fixture at Carrow Road with badly damaged ligaments.

LOOKS LIKE IT’S LEICESTER

As West Brom’s Craig Dawson soared above the Tottenham defence to crash his header home on Monday night, it was as if a dagger had been plunged into valiant Spurs hearts, still happily harbouring hopes of heaving this season’s Premier League title away from champions elect Leicester City before the end of this sensational season. The 1 – 1 draw left Mauricio Pochettino’s side a severe seven points behind the fantastic Foxes with only three games to play. An away win at Manchester United on Sunday could clinch the title for Claudio Ranieri’s wonderfully modest heroes to complete one of football’s modern fairy tales. Leicester’s leading league striker Jamie Vardy will be missing again having

had his ban extended by one match for angrily disputing his controversial sending off against West Ham: but stand-in striker Leonardo Ulloa is doing a manful job in Vardy’s absence, scoring two in Sunday’s 4 – 0 rout of Swansea. The Argentinian was deservedly named man of the match for his major part in keeping the Foxes ahead of the pack. Spirited Spurs have kept the chase going while playing some wonderful fast-flowing football this campaign, but will have to look to next season to exploit their full potential. At least the Lilywhites will be content that this year, for once they will finish well ahead of detested nasty neighbours Arsenal, not to mention mighty Man City.

TOON

LATE!

There’s all to play for still in the Premier relegation zone in the ‘Who-goes-down-with-Villa’ scenario. Another fighting draw saw Newcastle’s coming back from being 2 – 0 down at Liverpool, which keeps the North East pot boiling nicely, but with only three games left, the miserable Magpies are a point and a place adrift of Norwich. The Canaries are equal with Newcastle’s nasty neighbours Sunderland, both of whom have a game in hand. Now Newcastle travel to Cup finalists Crystal Palace tomorrow, the Eagles soaring high as critical confidence returns after a bad spell sank them to 16th place in the Prem, just above safety – but the FA Cup Final with Man Utd awaits on May 21st. Nervy, neurotic Norwich travel to Arsenal for tomorrow’s late game, the Gunners still stalwartly striving, Sanchez-staffed to contest third place. Favourites, once more to somehow survive Sunderland have the better chance of success travelling to stuttering Stoke, who were abjectly hammered 4 – 0 last Saturday by marauding Man City. The Blues meanwhile go to Southampton on Sunday.

CAPTAIN

QUITS!

One of CD Torrevieja’s long-standing players, Jorge Carmona, has left the club over not getting paid for the last four months and joined Callosa Deportiva. Last Sunday the Torry players staged a sitdown protest over the situation (See Page 45), but Carmona went a stage further by refusing to play against Recambios Colon, and the previous weekend at Paterna. The captain’s exit follows the departure of Rafa Gómez to La Nucia a fortnight ago due to Torry’s financial problems.
