Houston Youth Symphony concert Sealy Spring Picnic opens with Crawfish/Shrimp Boil to feature 11-year-old Katy cellist The 2015 Spring Picnic will be held Friday and Saturday at the Liedertafel at 116 Lux Road in Sealy. The festivities kick-off at 6 p.m. Friday with a crawfish and shrimp boil, with hotdogs and snacks for those anyone who doesn't eat Cajunstyle food. The great food will be accompanied by the country sounds of Jason Chapman at 6 p.m., and Jamie Wilson at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, there will be games and entertainment for all ages. Among the notto miss-activities include the vintage baseball games to be played by the Katy Combines and the Houston Babies. Vintage baseball is played using the rules, uniforms, balls and bats that were used in the 1800s; there were no gloves! Watching a vintage baseball game is an education about life as it used to be. The teams have invited local residents to join in, play the game and have a good time. Anyone interested in participating may contact Nancy Naron at 832-492-4244 or just show up at 10 a.m. Saturday at B&PW Park.

To learn more about vintage baseball, visit the website, www.vbbtexas.org. At 1 p.m. Saturday, the two vintage baseball teams will face off in an egg toss competition. Last year, these players demonstrated that they can not only catch a ball thrown 100 feet, but can also catch an egg thrown100 feet without breaking it. Egg toss tournaments will also be held for all who want to participate. Along with egg tosses, there will be hoop-and stick-races and a scavenger hunt. Entertainment will reflect this year’s theme, “Cultures of Texas,” to include WAWEL, a Polish folk dance group that performs in traditional Polish dress and the Mariachi Espuelas De Mexico. Native American Indians will be represented by a group from the Alabama Coushatta tribe near Livingston, and the Sealy Eastside Foundation will entertain with dances typically performed at African-American weddings. Vendors selling antique items items and handmade or home-

Native Americans will entertain with their tribal dances. grown items will be on hand to sell their wares. The Bluebonnet Master Gardeners will hold their annual plant sale in conjunction with the Spring Picnic and will be open for business at 8 a.m. Saturday. The Spring Picnic is held annually and is sponsored by the Sealy Area Historical Society. To learn more about the event, or to register to participate as a vendor or to enter the baking contest, visit the website, www.sealyhistoricalsociety.org.

The award-winning Houston Youth Symphony (HYS) presents its Spring Concert on Sunday, May 3, at 4 p.m. at Rice University’s Stude Concert Hall. The concert features two 2015 HYS Concerto Competition winners, violinist Jiakai Pan and cellist Lauren Mathews of Katy. They will join Concerto Competition winner Sarah Meidel, piccolo, who was featured in a performance on the HYS Winter Concert. Lauren, 11, plays the cello. She will perform the third movement of the Cello Concerto in C Minor by J.C. Bach/Henri Casadesus with the HYS Philharmonia led by Conductor Michael Alan Isadore. Lauren is a sixth-grade student at Beckendorff Junior High in Katy ISD, where she participates in the orchestra program under the direction of Karel Butz. A private student of Donna Rogers, this is Lauren’s third year with Houston Youth Symphony. Jiakai 15, is a violinist who will perform the first movement of Samuel Barber’s Violin Concerto with the HYS Symphony conducted by Dr. Michael Webster. A sophomore at Bellaire High School, Jiakai is a member of the school’s orchestral music program led by Laurette Reynosa. Jiakai has also recently won the Clear Lake Symphony concerto competition. Jiakai studies privately with Kenneth Goldsmith, professor of violin at the Shepherd School of Music. This season is his third year with the Houston Youth Symphony. The HYS Spring Concert program also includes Rossini’s William Tell Overture and Fountains of Rome by Respighi, performed by the Symphony, HYS’s most advanced orchestra. The Philharmonia performs the “Hungarian March” from The Damnation of Faust by Hector Berlioz and Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2. Rounding out the four ensembles of Houston Youth Symphony are the String Orchestra, co-conducted by Carolyn Van-

via the Christ Clinic website at www.christclinickaty.org and via twitter at #walkwithadockaty The Katy Walk With a Doc program is part of a state-wide initative funded by a grant from the Texas Medical Association Foundation with major support from the Texas Medical Association Insurance Trust. In addition, Katy Walk With a Doc program is generously supported by local churches; St. Peter’s Church, Kingsland Baptist Church, The Fellowship and St. Paul Episocal Church, who will provide healthy snacks, water and Walk Buddies to help encourage and motivate patients to walk to a healthier lifestyle. Clothed by Faith, a Katy non profit will provide selected registered participants with a “free” pair of doctor approved athletic shoes to help them on their fitness journey. Academy Sports and Outdoors has donated a tent, tables and chairs for the event and Chamberlin School of Nursing students will assist with blood pressure screenings. Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country. “This program has had tremendous participation and tremendous success in many other cities around the country,” said Dr. Anthis. “I’m very pleased to be a part of this exciting and simple program that shows such improved health results for so many people.” Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Anthis. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can palso provide these health benefits: • Improve blood pressue and blood sugar levels. • Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity. • Enhance mental well-being. • Reduce the risk of osteroporosis “Walk With a Doc allows physicians to interact with their patients outside the office, where they can see their doctors practice what they preach. What’s discussed in the office is put in motion outside the office,” said Debbie Fuller, MD, vice president of the TMA Foundation and immediate past chair of the TMA Council on Health Promotion. She said patients’ comments and questions during the walks tend to feed off of one another as they discuss general health and lifestyle issues with a person they trust — their physician. “It’s me and my patients, real-life in sweats together, just talking about health and wellbeing while we’re out getting exercise,” she said.
