Taylor sits on top of district with 5-1 baseball record Taylor is now the new leader in District 19-6A baseball. Taylor moved to 5-1 in the district with a 2-1 thrilling win over Morton Ranch April 2. Going into the final inning, Taylor trailed Morton Ranch 1-0 and had to rally for the win. Tanner Knowles earned the win in relief of starter Zack Schindler, who was impressive on the mound for the Mustangs.

Katy – 7 Tompkins – 0

Katy moved to 4-2 in District 19-6A with an impressive 7-0 shutout win over Tompkins April 2. Jack Silva started for the Tigers and struck out seven in the outing. Garrett Doiron came in to close out the game. Katy jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Cole Haring singled and stole second.

After Taylor Cox walked, Grant Jackman singled in Haring for a 1-0 lead. Two straight walks forced home Cox and a 2-0 lead. By the time the first inning had ended, Katy held a 5-0 lead. Leading the way for Katy offensively was Cole Haring and Grant Jackman with two hits each. Taylor Cox also had a big night by driving in two against Tompkins. Courtesy photo

Cinco Ranch bounces back to turn back Mayde Creek 6-1 Cinco Ranch has been the class of District 19-6A softball for some years now but this year has been a bit of a different story for the Cougars. Last Friday, Cinco Ranch started the second half of the district schedule with an impressive 6-1 win over Mayde Creek to avenge an earlier loss to the Rams in the softball season. The game was knotted at 1-all after four innings before Cinco Ranch exploded for four runs in fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Cougars were paced of-

fensively by Ariahna Ruiz, who homered and drove in two while Karli Hamilton was twofor-three and scored two runs for the winning Cougars. On the mound, lefty Courtney Glover went the distance as she allowed only five hits with issuing a walk in collecting the win. Seven Lakes – 9 Tompkins – 1 Seven Lakes eased past Tompkins 9-1 to keep pace with the Katy Tigers in the district softball standings.

Brooke Tomalty pitched the Spartans to the win over the Falcons and got all the run support she would need in the first inning against Tompkins. Seven Lakes scored six runs in the first inning and never really looked back at Tompkins. Big hits in the first inning came from Tomalty with a two-run double and a two-run homer by Marisa Trevino. The lead grew to 8-0 before Tompkins was able to avert the shutout on a solo homer by Megan Kalinec.

Humes and sophomore Grant Leal. “At the district tournament was the first time we had all five of our boys playing together in a long time,” Ewing said. “It provided us a good chance to make sure we are working towards our goal and that is to get to state and fight for a state championship.” Ewing knows that the regional course is set up to challenge the teams that have made it this far. “They set that course up to separate the men from the boys,” Ewing said. “You have to have a very good golf game and follow the game plan and make sure you hit the ball to an exact spot or you are not going to score. The boys understand that and now we just have to go out and execute.” Ewing knows that Cinco Ranch is young, like his team was a couple of years ago. “(Cinco Ranch) will be heavily favored to win this district after this year,” Ewing said. On the girls’ side, Ewing concedes that Cinco Ranch is the team that all others are aiming at. The Cougars will be eyeing their fifth straight trip to the state

tournament as a team this coming week. “They are loaded with on their girls’ team,” Ewing said. “Ashni has a pretty good chance of coming out of regionals and earning a berth at the state tournament,” Ewing said of junior Ashni Dhruva. Coming into the district tournament that was held at RiverRidge Golf Club in Sealy, Ewing believed that Dhruva would give Cinco Ranch’s Maddie Luitweiler a run for her money and the junior did just that. In the first round of the district tourney, Luitweiler shot a 71 while Dhruva shot a 72 to remain one stroke behind the reigning district champion. On the second day, Dhruva matched Luitweiler’s 69 and lost the district individual title by one stroke 140-141. Coming into the regional tournament, Ewing has told Dhruva to just worry about her game and let the coach worry about the other four Seven Lakes girls’ golfers. “I told her to just take care of herself and shoot her score,” Ewing said. “She just has to put the ball in the right spot and let the girls remain steady behind her.”

Ewing confides that his girls’ team has a challenge ahead of them at the regional tournament but he also has confidence that they can rise to the challenge if they put their minds and game to it. “Our talent level on the girls’ side is not as strong as some of the other teams,” Ewing said. “We are young with only one senior so we really don’t have that senior leadership that you tend to rely on at this point of the season. “But we came back from six strokes down last year to earn a trip to state,” Ewing said. “So you never know we might have another run again this year.” The Seven Lakes’ girls’ roster is made up of junior Ashni Dhruva, sophomore Lillian Tia, senior Whitney Fillmore, sophomore Kathryn Wolf, junior Erkia O’Brien, sophomore Grace Park, junior Emily Flinchpaugh and junior Stevie Clewett.

with them. I could be here another 80-something years and it would always be hard to walk away.” Nordstrom knows it would be nice to go out on top but that is the goal every single year at Cinco Ranch. “We hope for that every year,” Nordstrom said. “But I always tell them this season is not about me but it is about us, our program and our team. This is not about me the coach going out. I just want to see them have success for all the hard work that they have done.” On the girls’ side, Cinco Ranch is one of the early favorites at the Regional tournament and should be a lock to make it to another state berth. Cinco Ranch has placed first in six golf tournaments this year and walked away with the district title by 50 plus strokes. Cinco Ranch is the defending region champion from last year and looking for their fifth straight trip to the state tournament as a team this year. The Cinco Ranch boys are also eyeing a fifth straight trip as well. “We had four out of five returners to the girls’ team this year so I expected them to be good this year,” Nordstrom said. “We lost a key player in Kennedy Ishee but I knew the talent was there. All I had to do this year was make sure I got them to their tee times on time. “They still worked pretty hard this year as usual and improved quite a bit,” Nordstrom said. “They knew they would have to step it up after losing Kennedy.” One key player that has stepped up their play is Madison Goldblum, who finished in fourth place at the district tournament. “She has filled in quite well for us this year,” Nordstrom said. Bu the straw that stirs the drink for the Cinco Ranch girls is University of Texas signee Maddie Luitweiler, who captured the district tournament by one stroke of Seven Lakes Ashni Dhruva. Luitweiler was the greater Houston player of the year the last two years in

golf and has placed fourth in state in the last two years. “She has been our number one for the last three years,” Nordstrom said. Another key golfer is junior Katy Rutherford, who finished in third at district. “She has come on pretty strong for us,” Nordstrom said. Alexis Kollmansberger, a signee with Grand Canyon University, placed sixth for Cinco Ranch at the district tourney. Another returnee Sarah Kelley also has been strong for Cinco Ranch as well. “Sarah is a seasoned vet that has been in the wars of the regional tournament and state tournament,” Nordstrom said. Another golfer who will head to regional as a medalist is sophomore Sarah Zimmerle. She advanced to the regional tournament as being one of the two medalists not on the top two advancing teams. At regions, Nordstron knows his main competition will come from Clements and Memorial. “Our expectations are high going into the regional tournament but they were the year before as well,” Nordstrom said. “The kids have tasted the state tournament and they want to be back. Last year at state, we placed fifth and they wanted to improve on that this year. “They wanted to set the bar higher for Cinco Ranch golf,” Nordstrom said. “They have tasted it and came close and now they want to improve on it. Even though their expectations are high, they have handled it quite well. They play with confidence but they are a very humble group. They just have to work hard and compete. It is a very fierce battle and you have to do all the little things right.” On the boys’ side for Cinco Ranch, the team is young with four sophomores and a junior making up the top five for the Cougars. The only one with any

real experience on this time of the season is Cade Kiser, who was moved up at district last year. “None of them have any real experience with a district tournament so this year was their first real test,” Nordstrom said. “I was very pleased with how they came through.” Nordstrom knows Seven Lakes is the defending district and region champion and he knew that senior-heavy team would be tough this year. “We just wanted to make sure that we cleared the first hurdle and made it to regionals,” Nordstrom said. “We knew Strake Jesuit was going to be tough but we really came through in the clutch.” Cinco Ranch was four up over Strake on day one but at the turn on day two, Strake Jesuit and Cinco Ranch were tied for second place. Cinco Ranch prevailed beating Strake by two strokes on the back nine of the final day to earn a team berth at the regional tournament. Nordstrom pointed to the round of sophomore Jamie Rogers as being key for Cinco Ranch that final day. Rogers shot a 74 on the final round and finished fifth overall. Sophomores Jared Bray and Kiser have been the one and two for Cinco Ranch this year. Sophomore Lorenzo Siboro shot a 79 on the second day and the combination of these scores led Cinco Ranch to the second place finish. “There is no substitute for experience and this team had to grow up real fast,” Nordstrom said. “They came through and I couldn’t be more proud of them. Now, they have that experience that will help them next year. It was special to get the boys through to the regionals because we wanted to do that again.” Junior Will Speer also shot well at the district tournament posted a first-day round of 76.
