Minister James Bolton, Eulogist

Lee Anthony "Smitty" Smith, a cherished soul whose generosity and passion for life touched the hearts of many, passed away on April 4, 2025, in Atlanta, GA, at the age of 58. Born on January 5, 1967, in Pemberton, NJ, Lee's journey through life was marked by his charismatic personality and his unwavering love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his joyful spirit.

Smitty graduated from Pemberton High School in 1985 and went on to further his education at Hampton University. His commitment to excellence and community was evident in his professional life as well. Lee served as a technician at Ecam Secure, where his professionalism and work ethic were unparalleled. Alongside his beloved wife, Shelby, he co-owned and operated Lula's Chill Factory, an ice cream shop named in honor of his mother-in-law, where he was known for the joy and warmth he brought to every interaction.

Lee's service to his country was exemplified by his time in the Army National Guard, where he took on the roles of a radio repairman and ground surveillance specialist. His dedication to his duties was a testament to his character and his love for his nation.

Basketball was a lifelong passion for Lee, having played from a young age and even during his freshman year in high school. In recent times, he found joy in the game of cornhole, a testament to his playful spirit and willingness to embrace new experiences. Above all, Smitty was a lover and connector of people. He poured his heart into every relationship, whether with family, friends, or acquaintances, leaving a lasting impact on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Lee was a man who embodied love, generosity, and passion. These words not only describe him but were the very essence of his being. His ability to light up a room and make everyone feel included was a rare gift that will be deeply missed.

He is preceded in death by his father, Charlie R. Smith, and sister, Katie Cox. His memory will be cherished and kept alive by his loving wife of 28 years, Shelby Smith; children, Lee "AJ" and Alecea Smith and bonus son Keenan Peterson; his mother, Pauline Smith of Pemberton, NJ; siblings, Willistine Smith of Pemberton, NJ, Charlesenna (Richard) Burton of Covington, GA, Paul R. Smith of Frederick, MD, and Myta (Nigel) Clarke of East Orange, NJ; mother-in-law, Lula Hartwell of West Columbia, SC; and siblings-in-law, Walter Cox of Lillington, NC, Sheila (Keith) Etheredge, Shequssa (Bryan) Wright, Ernessa (Travis) Rice, and Ernell Hartwell. He will also be lovingly remembered by his chosen brothers and sisters Larrye (Dana) Cheaves, Anthony Justice, Mark (Archell) Minor, Lenora Johnson, Leroy Gamble, James (Veronica) Bolton, Courtley (Lillian) Ealey - true brothers in spirit, bound by loyalty, laughter, and love along with a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.

Lee Anthony "Smitty" Smith lived a life that exemplified the best of human virtues. His legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire those who knew him and will be carried forward by the many lives he touched. As we say goodbye to a man who was not only a pillar of his community but a beacon of light in the lives of his loved ones, we take solace in the memories and moments of joy that he shared with us. Smitty's life was a beautiful testament to the power of human connection and the indelible mark one person can leave on the world.
