he Kendal Primary Partnership School Direct were thrilled that tutor Rachel Esposito won a Golden Apple Award this year. Rachel was nominated by the trainee teachers that she supports and won the People’s Choice award. The result was decided by an online vote across Cumbria and was also the first time this particular category had been awarded. The Kendal based School Direct teacher training programme is in its fifth year, and by the end of this year it will have trained over 50 primary teachers in local schools. Rachel and her colleague Pippa Leslie, from the University of Cumbria, work in partnership with the leaders of all the primary schools to design and lead an exciting, innovative school-based postgraduate programme. Pete Barfoot, Headteacher of St Mark’s CE School, describes the School Direct course in Kendal as “a unique opportunity to enter this most valuable of professions, rooted in the excellent practice of a close knit community and family of schools.”

Rachel and pupils

Learning the craft of teaching from some of the best practitioners working in local schools, is a key feature of the programme. The majority of the year is spent in a variety of different educational settings, maximising the time to become fully immersed in the role of a teacher. Academic study is organised through a range of group sessions, observations, role play, tutorials, self-directed study, research and presentations.

Pippa and Rachel will be visiting Kendal Library on 21 January 2019 for an open afternoon. In the meantime, if you are interested in finding out more about becoming a teacher, or know someone you think could become an inspirational primary teacher please contact Rachel for more information.
