Well, ‘doesn’t time fly when you’re enjoying yourselves’ and that must have been the case for all Kendal residents and our visitors over the past few months, as summer and autumn seemed to have flown by. The county shows have seen great success, the weather has been kind and as the ‘gateway to the lakes’ we have seen a good proportion of the 18 million Lakeland visitors come our way over the past 12 months. However, more is always welcomed and the partnership focusing on this aspect for Kendal is ‘Kendal Futures’ with its Economic Development Action Plan up to 2025. The partnership recognises that ‘Undoubtedly, Kendal and its wider area now offers a business friendly environment, a strong tradition of innovation, a highly skilled and connected workforce and a reputation for world class arts and culture. It also punches above its weight as a premier town for delivering quality events. All this is underpinned with an excellent quality of life.’ This reality provides a great base from which to promote local businesses and events, across the community and further afield and as a strong local community, supporting our local businesses and traders can only serve to make us all even more successful. On a more seasonal front, we now have Christmas looming large and all the buzz and endeavour that that creates. With events such as the Brantwood Winter Craft Fair, the Kendal Mountain Festival, the Kendal Christmas Lights Switch On, the Charities Christmas Tree Festival and the Kendal Christmas Gift and Craft Fair, it proves to be both a busy and enjoyable time for all. So maybe a well earned spot of relaxation could be taken at the Chocolate House, the Punch Bowl at Barrows Green or book your Christmas Dinner or Party at The Kendal Golf Club. It has been a wonderful year around the Kendal area and 2018 promises to be even better. We would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Prosperous New Year and a big thank you to our advertisers and readers for your continued support.

Picking the best Christmas tree

Householders are going to have to dig deep in their pockets if they want a Nordmann fir non-drop Christmas tree this year, according to industry experts. While it is the most popular tree because of its deep green colour and reliability that it won’t drop its needles, in the past five years prices of the Christmas tree have risen by up to 30% and a 6ft tree may cost around £45 in some areas, according to the British Christmas Tree Growers Association. But our beloved Nordmann is not the only tree which will last through the festive season. The Fraser fir (Abies fraseri), popular in the eastern United States, is narrower than other trees and therefore more suitable for smaller rooms. If you want to save money, go for a home-grown Scots pine or Lodgepole pine, which are likely to cost around £10 less than the same size of Nordmann fir. These trees don’t drop their needles and are bushier than the Nordmann. Some have cones on them and they are wonderfully fragrant. Before buying your tree, measure the space you are allocating it indoors, considering both height and spread to ensure a good fit. You can always trim it with a good pair of secateurs, but the less trimming you have to do the better the tree will keep its shape. If budget is your main priority, shop around on the internet for the best prices. Alternatively, seek out reputable growers who are situated away from urban centres but as close as possible to your home. They are less likely to attract a big retail market and you may find a better tree and clinch a better deal. When deciding on a tree, check that the needles are not dull and dried up and that the branches are not brittle. Remember to gently shake the tree to ensure the outer needles are not falling off. If you can bear to, leave it ‘til the last minute to buy a tree, especially if you choose something such as a Blue spruce (Picea pungens ‘Glauca’), which will drop its needles quicker than other types. Don’t put the tree next to a radiator or fire because it will dry out and the needles are more likely to drop. Saw off the bottom 5cm of trunk to open up its pores before you bring the tree inside, and place it in a bucket of water until you are ready to house it. When you bring it in, make sure you can keep it topped up with water as a tree will drink half a litre a day. Most Christmas-tree stands have a space for water, or you could simply wedge it into a bucket. Some people opt for bare-rooted or root-balled trees if they want to keep the tree for future years. trees should be planted as soon as possible in moist earth to stop their roots from drying out, while root-balled trees are wrapped in sacking and should be planted in containers. There are pros and cons to each, but bear in mind that live trees with roots may not take kindly to being brought indoors into a warm, dry atmosphere. However, trees that have been cut off at ground level, sharpened to stick into a wooden base and then transported around the country need to be tough to survive and look good. If you buy a bare-rooted tree, soak the roots in water before planting. Keep the compost in container-grown trees moist to prevent the needles from dropping. Hopefully, your tree will still be looking as festive as ever as you see in the New Year.

Kendal Christmas Lights Switch On Event Sun 19th Nov, 2017: 2pm - 5pm

Kendal’s celebration of Christmas starts with an afternoon of festive fun on Sunday 19th November when Santa and his reindeer visit for the big lights switch-on. Kendal’s streets will be transformed into a sparkling, twinkling winter wonderland following a reindeer-pulled sleigh procession from Abbot Hall to the Lakeland Radio stage (just next to Elephant Yard Shopping Centre), for the lights switch-on. Santa and his reindeer will arrive in Abbot Hall from 2pm to join in the festive activities
