Educational Support Services

Educational Support Services The King’s School Educational Support Services Department (ESS), is staffed by specialist teachers, who, in conjunction with subject teachers, provide assistance to boys across all Year levels in a variety of ways. ESS seeks to develop boys’ full academic, social and emotional potential in order to achieve their individual goals. This includes students who need to consolidate their literacy skills and students with English as a Second Language. In order to assist the School to meet a student’s academic and/or pastoral needs, it is imperative that parents contact the Head of the ESS Department to share any information that would assist the School to meet their child’s needs. Boys are taught in a structured learning environment that is both positive and rewarding. Students are assisted through teaching in differentiated classes or through support in the key subject areas by ESS staff.

Homework Club

The ESS Homework Club operates from Monday to Thursdays inclusive. It begins at the end of the academic school day and concludes at 5pm. Students are provided with afternoon tea to assist with the working of the brain! Homework Club is mentored by specialist ESS staff where assistance is provided with the completion of homework (prep); assignments and assessments; and general organisation. This club is held in an ESS classroom and there is no need to book. Students are able to come along and work in a collaborative environment with other students. Attendance Rolls are maintained so that we are aware of a student’s location at all times.

Early Morning Classes

Handwriting Class For students who require extra tuition in handwriting script the early morning classes allow for intensive teaching for required skills. In addition, students can use the time to catch up on Homework tasks that they were unable to complete the night before. Early morning classes are small in number and are held on the Monday and Wednesday morning of each week. They commence at 7.30am and finish at 8.15am. No booking is required. Classes are held in the ESS1 classroom. MSL Class Multi Sensory Structured Language Classes (MSL) are also run by ESS Specialist Staff. These classes are relatively small in number and are by invitation only. MSL Classes are run before school for approximately half an hour duration, twice per week. They are designed for students who require some extra tuition in one or more of the basic skills, such as phonological awareness or a sub skill set of reading. Classes allow for intensive teaching and practice of such skills. The days in which these classes occur vary from Year to Year. The class operates from 7.45am to 8.15am in the ESS4 classroom. If it is considered that a student requires remedial assistance, his teacher, tutor or the Head of Educational Support Services will contact parents to discuss the matter.

Community Assistance required Exam/Assessment Volunteers The Educational Support Services Department (ESS) is seeking to expand its pool of volunteers to assist with Disability Provisions (DPs) for exams. These include: • A Reader: someone who reads the exam questions to the student • A Scribe: someone who writes the student’s answer to an exam question • A Reader and a Scribe: someone who both reads the exam question to a student and writes the answer the student dictates A Scribe does not require wonderful handwriting or spelling – writing simply needs to be legible. Providing the actual DPs is straight forward. We will provide training sessions throughout the year so that you are fully informed of the requirements. This will ensure that you feel quite comfortable in administrating a provision before you start. In addition, you must hold a current Working With Children Check clearance (please note that for a volunteer there is no cost involved). For more information see the following link https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/childsafe-organisations/working-with-childrencheck

What to do now? If you are able to assist us in this area, we would be extremely grateful. To register your interest in volunteering, please email your Working With Children Check number and expiry date and your date of birth to: Mrs Anu Suttie EMAIL ess-volunteers@kings.edu.au Thank you in advance for your support and we look forward to meeting and working with you in the future. The Educational Support Services Team.
