Letter from the editor When Jack Frost comes to Copenhagen, it’s time to break out the cold weather clothes. Forget the plainly colored mass market scarves and hats the shops are overflowing with, and knit your own. Our Copenhagen Collection was inspired by famous neighborhoods in this wonderful city. Paired with historical tidbits along with personal recommendations for each area from The Knit team at issuu, you’ll get an authentic inside look at Copenhagen.
Homemade knits are made with love and care, and much easier to create than you think. Frederiksberg is the city within the city, spanning 9 square km within Copenhagen city. It creates a fascinating juxtaposition between old and new Copenhagen, with it’s famed Frederiksberg Alle, a quaint cobblestoned road that runs in the middle of the city, and lovely old-style buildings.

It’s also known as one of the finer areas of the city, as many well-to-do members of the city live there. However, taxes are lower and prices are higher, due to the exclusivity of the area.

From the very beginning, this district has had a rugged reputation - a reputation it maintains today. During its change from farmland to city, it got populated mainly by workers in small apartments and was known as the roughest of the Copenhagen districts. Despite a general resistance towards gentrification amongst the local residents, the district has gone through plenty of change throughout the years, while still maintaining its rugged charm.

These days, the district is known for its culturally diverse population, giving a unique mix of cultural influences in the cityscape. This is particularly evident in Superkilen Park, a place filled with sports activities, relaxation spots, playgrounds and lots and lots of colours - The Red Square is particularly well known, and the red colours and russian signs that adorns the square can be seen from 5a, the most used bus line in Denmark. The homes surrounding the park houses more than 60 different nationalities and the area vibrates with life and cultures of the people living there. The park was specifically built to celebrate diversity, and it makes it a place like no other. Plenty of smaller businesses also thrive in the environment, and the real charm of the district shows when you take a trip down the smaller streets. Here you can find famous breweries like Nørrebro Bryghus, small boutiques like ro chokolade and unique restaurants like Ramen to Bíiru. There are also several flea markets spread throughout the district, Ravnsborggade Flea Market being one of the most noteworthy ones. Around every corner is something unique - if you’re brave enough to enter.

“If you’re looking for a place filled with life and diversity, Nørrebro is the place to go. It has a vibe that’s different from the rest of Copenhagen, and while it might not be for everyone, if you’re open to something different, this is the place to go. Despite its name translating to New Harbour, by now the harbor has a good amount of years behind it. Constructed in the 17th century by King Christian V, the harbor was used to transport cargo and fresh fish to the innermost city. As time passed and ships grew larger, the small harbor could no longer accommodate the demand, and it was empty until the area was revitalized in the 1960’s.

At the far end of the harbor on the northern side, The Royal Danish Playhouse lets you enjoy plays and a view of one of Copenhagen’s architectural feats The Royal Opera House, built in 2005. With its lavish interior, it’s well worth taking one of the small boats to the other side of the harbor for a concert. While there, a visit to the world famous Michelin restaurant Noma will be an experience to remember - if you can get a reservation, that is. The beautiful harbor, filled with colorful townhouses, offers the perfect place to finish up a summer evening in one of the many restaurants around the harbor. For a treat, Vaffelbageren makes delicious ice cream cones and waffles to take with you on your journey through Copenhagen. It’s no wonder it’s one of the most popular places to visit in Copenhagen.

Right behind the Central Station of Copenhagen lies the district of Vesterbro, and while less traveled by tourists than Strøget and the surrounding area, its popularity amongst the people living in the area is a testament to its quality food and entertainment. So, while shining lights of Tivoli might lure you in, turn around and a whole different world awaits you.

Another part of Vesterbro undergoing change these years is the Carlsberg District, home of the first Carlsberg brewery. Denmark has a tradition of beer, and Carlsberg is one of the most well known brands. However, there is more to this place than just beer and brewer horses - forgotten amidst the busy street life is the Carlsberg Garden, where you can take a break and relax. There are also plenty of places where you can enjoy art, music or dance. Vesterbro truly encapsulates the food and culture of Copenhagen, and all you have to do is bite in and enjoy.
