T

hink! If you ask me, this is the most powerful word, and an ability that humans are blessed with. Otherwise, how would you explain people from the 4th millennium BC would insert rotating axles into solid discs of wood to invent one of the greatest inventions by humankind? The thought process and thinking behind creating something needs to be arranged and organised. Over the year, this world has witnessed many incredible people who have laid the foundation of creating something extraordinary. Let that be the invention of modern machines like Christopher, created by Alan Turing, that proved to be the gamechanger in World War II, or inventing a simple thing like nails, which gave humans the ability to cast and shape the metal in their desired form. Every creation or invention needs thinking. However, there are examples of creations and discoveries by


accident, but the study and organised thought process are what is necessary. After all, accidents, inventions, and discoveries don’t happen every day. Humans, being the highly intelligent species, have managed to understand that if thinking and attention are given to a cause, progress is inevitable. That’s the core reason to why education was imparted to the younger generations from the beginning. As society progressed, educational institutions and colleges were set up, which changed the face of humanity forever. Though most of the times, the students get the credit and make it bigger in the world, colleges go unnoticed in celebrating their success. Colleges often award their best students with the title of ‘Students of the Year’. This initiative motivates and helps to think for a cause. But don’t you think that rather than just crediting the students for their excellent performance, some credit should be given to the colleges as well who carve and groom them in such a nurturing atmosphere? Also, these colleges help these students to organise and channelise their thought for one thing, which allows them to create incredible things.

To credit such colleges for their excellent performance, we set out to find such colleges and group them under our latest edition, Colleges of the Year. In our endeavour, we came across some of the finest colleges in India and how they have dedicated themselves to producing professional masters in their niche speciality. Braving the Pandemic Whilst the pandemic has upended traditional classroom learning, a new blended form of online and offline learning has reshaped the medical education system. He heads the MA in Environment and Society as well as Odde Research Center along with Dr. Deepta Sateesh. He is an amphibian ecologist, works on the theories of complexity and soundscape ecology in understanding human induced as well as climate change impacts. He is credited with describing three novel breeding behaviours in amphibians, 21 new species of frogs and two new fish species from the Western Ghats. He is awarded with State Biodiversity Award for Excellence, Govt. of Karnataka State, India in 2016 and the Geospatial Excellence Award for the Frog Find Android App developed in 2014. Mr. Rustam Vania besides being an Academic Dean for undergraduate students at Srishti Manipal Institute, is also engaged with projects that produce popular science and environment education material. He brings his experience of working as a information and communication designer for agencies involved in environment and development issues including UNDP, IUCN, Centre for Science and Environment and Down To Earth Magazine. Mr. Sanjay is an award-winning documentary filmmaker with over four decades of experience in chronicling stories of people, livelihoods and landscapes. His camera has brought up close to audiences the lives of camel herders in Kutchh, hunter-gatherers in Nagaland and herb collectors in the Himalayas.

Enhancing Learning with Immersive Projects Srishti Manipal Institute offers a plethora of live projects to the students, which broaden their knowledge horizon and scope of learning. The aim is to unpack a landscapebased conservation approach to local communities and government departments in the trans-Himalayan snow leopard habitats of Himachal Pradesh. In one of its projects, 'Becoming River, Wing, Tree, Tail' led by Dr. Srivi Kalyan, students delved into ecological

consciousness asking deeply reflective questions about their own relationship with nature. Along with Dr. Gururaja, photographer Mahesh Bhat and artist Neeraja Durga, the students explored sites in Bengaluru, Assam and Meghalaya, learning from tribes and experiencing shifts in their own body, mind and consciousness. Dr. Gururaja with game designer Murali Krishna Menon led a project on ‘Conserving the lesser known’ in which the aspiring practitioners brought new dimensions of engagement and learning about non-charismatic and lesser-known species like ants, spiders, microscopic diatoms, house geckos and root fungi. They worked on indigenous knowledge systems, tribal rights, and conservation through game designs, infographics, animation and illustrated story books. At the master’s level, students have worked with Srivi and Guru, exploring the western ghats, working with frogs, understanding diverse terrains, conservation challenges, issues of displacement, conflicts at corridors and many other issues. Focused on Conserving the Environment Srishti Manipal Institute strongly emphasizes on training and making students aware about the threats the environment is facing, while preparing them to protect the environment. It is an open-to-all event, for all cinema lovers, aspiring filmmakers, media, design, and fashion professionals, where they have an opportunity to attend workshops, screenings, various contests, and celebrity panel discussions. Aiyanna Whistling Woods International School of Fashion & Costume Design, hosts ‘AIYANNA’, an annual fashion graduation show, giving a platform to the students to showcase their work. Students showcase brilliant couture collections, each with an innovative theme along with fashion films, research projects, and much more, designed and created by the graduating batch, respectively. It is the first time that a fashion design school has offered an opportunity to the students to showcase their creativity via movies bringing out the competitive stylist in them in a distinct way.

Cruising through the Pandemic WWI has always been synonymous with advancement, and it will continue to adapt itself with the changing times. With the world embracing several challenges owing to the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, WWI took the safety of the students and the staff very seriously. Various precautionary steps were put in place as soon as the pandemic began. The most important of these was the implementation of social distancing measures, which saw all the classes being shifted online. Although this undeniably impacted the courses when first implemented, these steps ensured that the ongoing

academic session remained uninterrupted, and that the students’ learning stayed unhindered. Subsequently, both the faculty and students adapted to the ‘new normal’ very quickly. The institute’s entrance exams for the 2020 and 2021 intake were shifted online, and the professors received training on how to provide virtual mentorship, guidance, and assistance to any student who required it. It also introduced the WWI Automated Resource Planner (WARP) - a customised ERP system that allowed access to WWI’s central database to the faculty and staff, without space or time boundaries. The Future Awaits With the Mumbai campus wellestablished, the institute is strongly looking at expanding programme verticals and campuses. The newest addition to WWI’s academic repertoire has been the launch of the School of Sports & Esports Management.

Additionally, it is at various stages of establishing additional campuses both within India and outside, in partnership with governments and like-minded organisations. The institute is driven by the vision to create an even greater state-of-the-art academic institution that sets new standards of world-class education in film, communication, and creative arts. WWI aims to inspire innovation and encourage creativity by leading from the front in the field of media and entertainment.
