Lauren Chisholm Launches New Fine Art Jewelry Line

Inspired by artist Alexander Calder and designers of The Wearable Art Movement, Lauren Chisholm’s distinctive aesthetic celebrates the design elements of symbolism, clean lines and scale. Her fine art jewelry line has evolved from an established career as a professional artist and is now available at www.laurenchisholm.com. Spain’s Mango fashion house defies recession

Beating the odds in Spain’s deep recession, the Mango fashion powerhouse in Catalonia says sales are booming worldwide, and even at home.

Owned by media-shy billionaire Isak Andic, Mango typifies an export-led business savvy that is the pride of many Catalans, who will hold snap regional elections November 25 over a pro-independence push.

Mango’s budget-minded clothing is sold as far afield as Pakistan and Myanmar.

But perhaps a greater achievement is its success back home in Spain, where a year-long recession is expected to extend into 2013, bad loan-ridden banks are being rescued and one in four workers is unemployed.

“It doesn’t affect us at all. In Spain we have sold 20 percent more this year than last,” said Enric Casi, its general director, at the company’s base near Barcelona in northeastern Spain.

Mango has nevertheless had to react to the crisis, dropping its prices by a fifth this year, and absorbing the cost of a recent rise in sales tax so as not to scare off customers.

Though prices have been lowered overall, there are no special discounts and profit margins will be maintained in 2012 at the same level as last year, Casi said.

“Last year we sold 1.4 billion euros’ worth of clothes and this year it will be about 1.7 billion or thereabouts.”

At Mango’s base, known as the “Hangar”, 600 sharply-dressed designers from various countries, most under 30, produce designs for the clothes later to be modelled by the likes of Kate Moss and Barcelona footballer Gerard Pique.

Near the Hangar, two logistical centres work round the clock dispatching 5,000 samples a year to be stitched by subcontractors in China, Vietnam, Morocco, Turkey and India, and redistributing the clothes once they are made to stores worldwide.

Like its rival Inditex -- owner of the Zara chain, based on the other side of Spain in Galicia -the Catalan firm designs its clothes at home, but it differs in contracting out all production, while Inditex has its own factories.

Spain’s two richest men are the founder of sector-leader Inditex, Amancio Ortega, and Mango’s Andic. Neither of the two men gives media interviews.

“We have many differences,” Casi said of the companies. “They are two models of success, each in its way.” Mango in 2010 set itself a target of doubling its sales in four years and Casi says it is on track to do so, while aiming to launch lines for children and teenagers, swimsuits, underwear and sportswear.

Troubled Spain remains its biggest market with 18 percent of sales, but is likely to be overtaken as others such as China grow strongly.

In 2013 it is due to open new stores in French Guiana and the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. “We are just getting started,” said Casi. “There is still a lot for us to do.”

Despite the success of firms such as Mango, Catalonia is Spain’s most indebted region.

Catalonia argues that Madrid levies far more in taxes in the region than it returns, and it resented being forced to seek 5.4 billion euros ($6.9 billion) in Spanish rescue funds to service its debt.

That resentment is being fed by Spain’s crushing economic crisis, which has forced Catalonia, like most of the country’s 17 regions, to adopt harsh austerity measures.

OC Fashion Showcase’s Grand Finale The Fall 2012 Orange County Fashion Showcase culminated in a grand finale at the Rooftop of the Westin Hotel at South Coast Plaza on Sunday night. The glamorous venue brought together fabulous designers and merchants to fundraise for scholarships for creative arts students through the Orange County Fashion Trade Association.

The first show of the evening was “Hodges Collection” by the OC Fashion Showcase’s founder, Deanna Hodges, who has been designing for over 20 years. The barefoot models, wearing a variety of dresses, long skirts, and flared-bottom pants, could be easily imagined taking a walk on a sunny Malibu beach, and with a simple change of footwear or the addition of a glitzy necklace, could go right into a dinner scene in Santa Monica. The models were accessorized by KD Luxe Jewelry, a merchant at the Showcase. The California-cool vibe of Hodges Collection is based on the designer’s preference for “comfort.” Some of the more dramatic dress styles, in striking red or crisp white, with plunging necklines, were very bold, showing variation in the collection. While she “doesn’t like prints,” she likes to “play around with dyes…that are more upscale or classy.” She explains that with prints, “you have to invest in so much of the same print fabric…[and] it instantly becomes dated… [and] last season.”

Her insight into the need for looks that can go from day-tonight is, as she puts it, because “people are just busy people; we don’t really have a lot of time.” With her pieces “you can throw them on in the morning, and you run out of time, and then you’re meeting some friends for lunch, and next thing you know, [you can] change it up and go to dinner.” All of her fabrics are cut, sewn, and dyed locally in Los Angeles and Orange County, and are available domestically as well as in Canada, Japan and Austria.

Next up was Zerrin Akinci, who won for “Outstanding Emerging Designer” of the event. The Cypress-born designer describes her style as “Ethnic Modernity,” or “the integration of ethnicity in the east with the modernity in the west.” Indeed, her dress collection was very elegant and sophisticated, but still unexpected and fresh, as she says “you’ll see the little details in my style.” These elements of surprise, or “little details” were evident in one of her first looks, a neutral-colored dress accentuated with a half-sleeve and a teal panel, and the back adorned with “buttons” that were teal sparkly gems. She demonstrates a very deliberate construction and exquisite tailoring, but plays with unexpected length, such as a lower hem in the back and higher in the front, surprising colored side panels, as well as using a variety of shapes in the dress straps. Her use of color is not really color-“blocking” because it is more subtle, like thin panels. The colors chosen for the panels were fun–teal, neon orange, even lace overlay–while the main fabric was more neutral with shades of olive green, cream, and gray. The tailoring of her dresses was first-rate, or as she puts it, “fitted as the skin.”

FASHION An empowering women’s collection was put on display by designer Sabrina Barnett, who focused on glammed-out t-shirts with profound messages of love and positivity. The Sabrina Barnett Collection is part of the designer’s socially-conscious philosophy that “fashion needs to have a message.”

Sparkling tees with messages such as “Let Love Shine,” “Live Your Smile”, “I am Worthy,” and “I admire kind people,” are just a few of the multitude of powerful messages she was sending in a casual way. The designer supports many charitable causes with the proceeds from her lines, which can be found online, and at boutiques in the US and internationally.

The event’s final show was a highly theatrical collection by Dubai designer Dar Sara. Exaggerated shoulders, almost like wings, were incorporated into the dresses, with a plethora of beading, sequins and sparkle. Nearly every shade and color was used in the luxurious collection of party dresses galore.

Alicia Hardesty, a contestant on the most recent 10th season of Project Runway, showed her collection and proved why she says she is “the best thing to hit women’s wear since Chanel wore pants.” Indeed, Hardesty’s designs for her clothing company “Original Tomboy” which she has described as “not too masculine or not too girly” can be styled by the individual wearer to express their unique style, having a broad appeal that is still ultimately original.

Her style sensibility is clearly informed by her upbringing in Kentucky, and her designs, which she describes as “fashionably tomboyish;” are comfortable, in that you can do anything in the them, yet with a style and fit that is decidedly modern. The silhouette and fit of her bottoms are her signature, as well as her affection for suspenders which can be functional and fun, and harken back to her experience in men’s wear. Her designs feature both denim and knits, and are made in the US, which she says is part of being “socially conscious” as a “person…[and] specifically picking out pieces that are very cool, and wearing them proudly,” and knowing where they come from. Her online boutique will open soon–in time for the holidays–and she is also looking at West Coast boutiques as well as those in her home state to feature her popular designs.

The Summer-Spring 13’ collection utilizes the signature, textured leather bag, “Epi” as inspiration for much of the line. Leather is a main theme running throughout the collection from the clothing to the shoes. The “Epi” deck shoes are showcased as the predominant footwear throughout the entire collection. The Damier has also appeared this season, however it’s been reinvented in waterproof nylon. It appears in the messenger bags as well as in the contrasting trim and main color–navy blue–for the collection. It has also made headlines appearing in the mini-trunk bags. Slight variations and role reversals of certain fabrics were made to give the collection a fresh new look, while still maintaining its traditional appeal and tone. The main thought behind the collection was to update the bags this season by taking the inner workings of the trunk and switching it around.

Certain elements have been changed, and trims and finishes were added to deliver a collection The wristwatches are both bold and technically that is both luxurious and modern. pleasing, from the bright orange hues to the cold navy that marries the two colors together. Olive green and florescent yellow combine in perfect harmony. The watches straddle the line between luxury and play, and provide a sense of time lost to adventure. They’re meant to be worn day or night, and play upon the main theme of the collection - travel.

Everything right down to the rope sandals that make use of luxurious crocodile to accent the sandals themselves are done beautifully. Desert boots appear in suede and add a touch of fluorescent fabric inside. The mix-and-match of technical and traditional components were targeted this season to reflect the modern tastes of consumers throughout the world. The collection was made with the world traveler in mind; meant to appeal to the scuba diver by day and the jet setter by night.

The neckerchiefs and ties in the collection add a touch of elegance, with flags of different countries printed throughout the fabric. For the man who isn’t afraid to say, “I’m not from one country, but I am a man of the world.” The well-worn traveler gets a new look thanks to Louis Vuitton: it’s chic and ever classic.

Pamella Roland Creates a Masterpiece Collection for New York Fashion Week As I made my way up the escalator at the Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center to Pamella Roland’s Spring 2013 presentation I did not know what to expect. I had heard of this designer and the fact that she has dressed A-List celebrities (Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Eva Longoria to name a few…) She is also a well known member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America and an art collector. But never could I have dreamed that I would fall so deeply in love with her work within minutes of arriving. Each item was the epitome of beauty and exquisite craftsmanship. Pamella’s passion for art was immediately apparent in the geometric patterns and sleek lines of her line. She did not miss a beat with including modern accents such as exposed zippers and sheer cut-outs.

As the presentation rolled into the second run, I found myself glued to the spot not wanting to look away for fear of missing any unseen detail.

I felt exceptionally fortune not only to be able to see the line for more than the twelve seconds that I would have on the runway, but to see it three times as the presentation repeated for a new set of onlookers. The black and white angular set design, created by renowned architect Kulapat Yantrasast, allowed for the perfect background to capture the elements of the pieces.

The models walked by in hand-painted silk dresses and ivory metallic tweed coats. The variation in Pamella’s design’s sets her apart from other designers. Each look had its own uniqueness to whether it was intricate macro beading or a keyhole chiffon dress. The presentation included all types of pieces from wideleg pants to sequin shorts, trumpet skirts, and evening gowns. Chopard jewels perfectly complimented the

collection. The classical element of her designs makes many of them timeless. I can picture Jackie Kennedy Onassis wearing these designs fifty years ago or and the Duchess of Cambridge wearing them today.

After the presentation I was able to meet the designer in person ,to ask her a few questions: Laura: How did you get your start in the fashion world?

Pamella: At a very young age, maybe 14 or 15, I started as a stock girl at a clothing store in Michigan. And how do you get into fashion from there? I have an art background, I worked in clothing all my life. I went to Michigan State University, studied art history and business, then got married and had three children. Later, as the kids got older, I really wanted to start my dream. And it was not easy with little kids, but I started designing.

Laura: What do you have in store for your Fall/Winter 2013 Collection?

Pamella: It is so crazy because on Monday this collection goes to bed and then we start work again on the new one. We have an inspiration chosen, but I will keep it quiet for now.

Laura: Fair enough. Who are some designers that you look up to?

Pamella: I love Yves Saint Laurent.

We do a tuxedo almost every season and I think he started that whole thing with women in tuxedos and I love that streamline in his collections.

Laura: What are some of your worlds of advice for up-and-coming designers?

Pamella: It is hard work and I think so often fashion design now has become so glamorized but really it is hard work and so few make it. You work around the clock and it is just the way it is.

I am so tired this fashion week, but I know that every fashion week this is the way it is. I do not think the young designers realize how much work it is. You better love it.

Laura: You mentioned you started working in the fashion industry at a very young age, and your first line came out in 2002, but when did you actually begin to create a line?

Pamella: In 2002. I can design, but I cannot sew.

In my opinion, Pamella had one of the most elegant collections of this season’s New York Fashion Week. With a classic approach to modernism, her pieces will definitely make a statement at any event. If I only had one word to describe this presentation I would not hesitate- it was simply stunning. If a women tells you she is wearing Pamella Roland, one thing is for certain, that woman has exquisite taste. I know that if I am ever going to walk the red carpet, she is the first designer I am calling for a fitting.

Tween girls (8 to 14) who attended the Kate Kate The Fashion Plate Entrepreneurship Program this summer, will be displaying and selling their fashions and home designs at the Kate Kate Tween Fair. The girls held a pop up store at Santa Monica Place in September and many sold out of their product lines. The event will feature tween designers, fun activities from sponsors such as green tea face masks, design actvities and design compitions.
