SARA BERKES Sara Berkes is currently a Graphic Design student at FIDM’s Los Angeles campus.

Born and raised in Vancouver, BC, in 2007 Sara switched coasts to complete her Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English and Creative Writing at the University of King’s College in Halifax, NS, where she lived the life of an east coaster for five years. Returning to the west coast in 2012 to study at FIDM, Sara currently looks for any opportunity to combine her love of writing and design.

RICK DAY A true Southerner, self-taught photographer Rick Day moved to New York City in 1994 and has become a noted name in Fashion Photography.

His work has been published in numerous publications such as Elle, Details, GQ and shot advertising campaigns for Gap, Ritani, C-in2 & Rufskin. When not traveling, he spends his time in the East Village with his dogs Mila and Rio always shooting the hottest faces in the industry.

I was born in Napoli, Italy. I picked up my first camera at age 12. It was a Kodak camera bought with the money I saved from my weekly allowance.

I began photographing the beauty that surrounded me in my hometown Napoli. In high school I began to take interest in the beautiful Italian designers. I saw them in fashion magazines such as Vogue and W magazine.

Being 100% Italian it was love at first sight. I was famous fashion and celebrity photographer Jerry Avenaim’s assistant for almost 2 year. l was able to learn so much from such of a great teacher and mentor. Still today I use many of his advices to achieve the best results when I shoot.

Beth has been working in the beauty industry at some capacity for over 20 years. A licensed Esthetician by trade, she left retail cosmetics to pursue a career in Entertainment. For the last 13 years she has freelanced all over Los Angeles. She’s worked with Celebrities from Janet Jackson , Brittany Spears, Sharon Osbourne and more. MARTA ELENA Marta elena was born and raised in a remote area of Venezuela until the age of 20. After coming to the United States for awhile she then went to Europe where she was based in Paris as a model for 10 years.

She then returned to the US where she began , with the exception of a few classes , teaching herself photography. At the moment she lives in Los Angeles...

Born and raised in Rome, Italy, the union of photography and fashion began in Nino’s childhood when his uncle gave him his first camera and he used to photograph and watch his mother, a seamstress, sewing clothes at home.

Nino moved to New York City and received a full scholarship to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology).

Having been an assistant designer to Ralph Lauren, Giorgio di Sant’Angelo and Ron Shamask, Nino brings his knowledge of fabric, color, silhouette, texture – all the elements of good design – to his photography.

Born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, Carlos Moscat’s inherent curiosity and appreciation for natural beauty let him to pick up his first camera from an early age.

His subjects ranged from his family to exotic animal and landscapes.

Carlos later discovered that through fashion and photography he could capture much of the magic that intrigued him as a child.

Most of his fashion photography work shows the beauty of men and women wearing alluring designs in unique locations.

Based in Los Angeles, CA, Carlos wants to keep his eye for beauty and light to create unique images that evoke feeling to the viewer.

His style is rooted in the classic, yet he’s contemporary, and always striving for the element of surprise: “It is that element that I’m after, that unexpected moment – sometimes that’s the best shot!”

ur offices are a reminder of all the things Los Angeles is becoming. Located in the heart of the Fashion District, we sit very high above the city and at night, the view reveals a skyline that is dazzling with lights, color and concrete. I am reminded of a time working in New York City late into the night on GQ and Self magazines. There is something so right about working on a magazine; photographers, writers, stylists, designers and make-up artists are in general, a smart breed of people, attuned to culture, dedicated and caffeinated workoholics.

Matthew Mitchell encompasses all those qualities and working with him has been nothing short of pleasurable. He is the driving force behind this revision of a venerable publication. As have all the people who have surrounded us here at The LA Fashion Magazine and have only made us better.

Our friend Morganne Picard, with whom I have had the pleasure of knowing for quite a while never fails to surprise and entertain.

Lisa Venderpump gave freely of her time and shared her favorite pet with us, Giggy, who seemed completely relaxed in front of the camera.

This is what makes it so much fun and exciting to work late hours on the creation of a magazine: There is the payoff in seeing your work in print (and online too!) and that always compelling combination of words and images coming together in unique and interesting ways.

This is just the beginning. Just like LA, we are changing, becoming even more cosmopolitan, more stylish, more fashionable.

Elizabeth Dankaro, known by friends and family alike as Tata, is a child of the 70’s. Dankaro, who currently resides in Los Angeles is an artist with a passion for all things uniquely beautiful.

Tata began creating pieces after noticing a gap in the market purely by coincidence.

Setting out to find unique jewelery with a twist she found little that appealed to her taste. She began creating her own jewelery and this would mark the beginning of something life changing.

“When friends and family saw my pieces they were impressed and began placing orders. Hence Tebazile was born.”

A demand for her pieces spurred Elizabeth on to place all her energy and love in creating something so wonderful and distinctive that it would one day be recognized beyond her expectations.

E

xploding in a vibrant cacophony of colour, Graham Moore’s 60s inspired collages combine a keen eye for scale and synergy with an overwhelming sense of fun. His art harkens back to the pre-digital days of Pop Art and his own graphic design education in mid-80s London, when the cutting and pasting process was essential learning for any aspiring designer.

First and foremost a teacher and graphic designer, Moore always assigns projects using hand techniques in his classes and does the projects along with his students. “The hope is that students would get really excited about it, explore it and would just go off on these tangents and experiment,” he says, “and of course, I would do that myself at home. To get me off the computer [I would] go into my kitchen and do a little cut and paste.”

It remained a casual exercise until three years ago, when Moore discovered an easy listening label called Command Records from the 50s and 60s that produced “very nondescript and generic” album covers and began to use them in his Design 1 class. “When you look at them they’re just using squares and circles and lines,” Moore explains. “But when you see what’s going on they’re applying the basic elements and

principles of design, like rhythm, movement, and how can you create rhythm with a bunch of lines.”

“I started playing with those [album covers], and you know, what if I take that one and this one and cut them up and put them together. And that’s how it started.”

Primarily working in a 12 x 12 inch format mimicking the album cover, Moore constantly challenges himself through his use of materials and themes in his art. His most recent exhibition was part of a group show at WACKO (at the Soap Plant) using the format of a beer coaster for LA Beer Week, for which he designed four pieces in his signature style. For two years his repurposed record cover collages have hung in the windows at Amoeba Records. Along with creating the promotional materials for the FIDM Museum “Ripped” exhibition last year, Moore also designed notecards and notebooks featuring his artwork, which are still for sale at the FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising) Museum Store.

“In a lot of my work I use fashion, women from the 60s, muscle cars, anything midcentury. I’m obviously in the wrong era.”

“All this stuff has just come, well, not from nothing but kind of—I was just playing around on my kitchen table, you know, cutting and pasting,” he says. “I’ve participated in about twelve shows to date.

It’s not my thing to go the gallery route—I’m still first and foremost a teacher and graphic designer. I do this stuff because I love doing it.”

As for what inspires his art, Moore names former Yale professor Norman Ives along with 60s Parisian collage artist Jacques Villeglé, but his obvious love for the 60s reigns supreme. “I love that period of graphic design and style,” he says. “In a lot of my work I use fashion, women from the 60s, muscle cars, anything midcentury. I’m obviously in the wrong era,” he laughs, “it should be 1966.”

Aside from finding the right materials, Moore doesn’t require a lot of tools for making his art.

“An Exacto knife and a ruler and some glue—and then some creativity,” he says. “I don’t really do thumbnails and sketch it all out and plan it, you know, it’s spontaneous, that’s sometimes when it works the best. Just take some stuff and cut it up and play around with it, you never know what’s going to happen.”

The Prince of Prints Pucci’s Vision and Legacy

Emilio Pucci (1914-1992) had

a passion for women, a visionary sense of style, and an eye for color and design.

With these talents he created a fashion house unlike any other. By the early ’50s his boutique on the isle of Capri was catering to wealthy sophisticates, heiresses and movie stars buying his “Capri pants”, silk scarves and lightweight separates. or those of you who have never seen Morganne Picard perform her act around various venues in Los Angeles, this is what you’re missing: Tall and elegant she enters the stage till the light finds her and with a wink and a smile, she sings. This is not your usual cabaret act, this is a fusion of sounds both modern and old, reinterpretations of classics like Goldfinger set to a completely different beat.

WHEN DID YOU START SINGING? I started singing I think about five years old. When I got my very first turntable. That little — remember that RCA — it was like a little piece of luggage and you’d open it up? And my dad being a musician, we had all the bells and whistles and microphones and whatnot. So yes, I started singing very young. WHAT WAS THE FIRST RECORDING YOU REMEMBER? Oh my gosh. I think its Sweet Nothing. Actually, Brenda Lee. You know? Brenda Lee, yes. Brenda Lee who’s the creator of the music union. It was called Sweet Nothing. fSO AT THE AGE OF 5 YOU’RE SINGING CHILDREN’S SONGS? Oh, no, no. I was singing blues and jazz because my dad was an organist. He played organ on a Hammond and he was also a saxophonist and he used to go on tour, so I grew up around blues and jazz. WAS HE IN A BAND? Yes, he was and that influenced me, obviously. Also my mother and my dad’s sister were famous dancers on television in the 60s. So that is also a part of my DNA, but my dad obviously did not want to encourage too much music. He taught me a lot of instruments but I was more encouraged at first to be a ballet dancer. I didn’t mind the ballet and dance, modern dance. AND THIS IS ALL TAKING PLACE WHERE, IN MONTREAL? Yes, and my after school activities were all arts and sports, apart from homework. AT WHAT AGE WERE YOU ON THE STAGE? I would say my first presentation was at 6 years old, for ballet. In my first ballet I was the main dancer. Obviously I had the best tutu. Maybe that’s why the ballet teacher put me in the middle.b OCTOBER 2013

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU DID YOUR FIRST PAID GIG? I got paid $100 for a song in a club in Montreal, I was 13. Italians love music, as you know, and Montreal has a big Italian community, so they were often the investors of music venues. And even today Italians own a lot of the music venues. But anyways, I was hired to sing for the Italians. But if I go backwards, when I was a kid I was also a DJ. My dad had bought all the equipment, so I would DJ at the sock hops. You know, at the school dance and during recess. I decided to put a band together of girls, so I had backup dancers. And I would charge 25 cents or whatever. So people would come to school or my basement to hear me sing, or see the kids and dancers. So I started that entrepreneur side of entertaining and getting paid for it. WHEN WAS YOUR FIRST VISIT TO LOS ANGELES? 14 years old as a model. Can you imagine? I came here for

Cancer Society around America: Pittsburgh, Seattle, wherever. I have done a lot of different shows for political events, United Nations, etc. But on the whole they’re cultural events that I sing for. EVER SING ON A BOAT EXCURSION? Yes, it’s fun to do that and I love it. I have sang on boats that go around the marina. ANY FILM ROLES? Yes, I played Mabel Norman in an award-winning silent film Birth Of Babylon. What was wonderful was that it was the same year as the anniversary of Le Moulin Rouge so it coincided well with the silent era. We had can-can dancers from Paris and LA at the Argyle and Hugh Hefner.

So it was a beautiful experience. WHERE IS THAT FILM NOW? That film transformed into a longer feature starring Tippy Hedron, Naomi Sky and many other wonderful actors. It just showed for the first time this summer at the Cicada Theater Club and it’s still a work in progress right

get hired to open galas, anniversaries of museums, and concert halls. I basically sing for private parties and jetsetters. Shamefully, a lot for the 1%. my record deal in ‘94, the year of the earthquake. I do not recall how green and gorgeous Los Angeles was because when you’re a model you’re being schlepped around. All I remembered was Rodeo Drive and all the beautiful buildings but I don’t recall how gorgeous the fauna was in Los Angeles. And then we drove up to San Francisco which was a really nice west coast experience. WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO MOVE TO LOS ANGELES? I came back here to finish up the project. I was signed by MCA Records, and we did a video in Las Vegas. They always do a video for in-house, you know, for marketing purposes. We did this video in Las Vegas and my song was presented. Then I sang at the Palm Springs Music Festival. I remember, because Sophia Loren was the guest of honor. My deal was running around in the lobby and also I did a little stint of singing.

Now, my source of income is singing for private events, not nightclubs or restaurants. I’ve done that before. It’s a lot of fun to sing for friends and fans. I basically sing for private parties and jet setters. Shamefully, a lot for the 1%. But I sing for a lot of philanthropists that can afford to put on gala events or fundraisers. I sing a lot for the American

now. It’s being re-edited by Alfred Hitchcock’s last editor so it’s sort of a work in progress that is a particularly long feature. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? It’s a fusion of international styles. For of all my travels and a little bit of the languages I encountered. I know a little bit of many languages. I adopted that genre at a very young age. I’ve always loved listening to music from around the world. That’s what attracted me to want to travel and leave my home. I left my home young, I was not even legal. When you’re in North Africa or Middle Eastern or Northern Europe or Asia and you hear how different cultures create music from different instruments, it’s a feast for the eyes and ears. When you are born in North America, yes we have blues and whatnot, but the choices on the menu are still limited compared to what’s out there.

Today, of course with the Internet everybody’s exposed to global music. Basically that’s why. IS IT CABARET? I would not call it cabaret, I call it entertainment. So if the event requires me to be Marie Antoinette that evening, I will rearrange my repertoire and have the chords that sound more like the Romantic Era and of course the outfit.

This is truly Lisa Vanderpump’s year. With Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in its 4th season and [Vanderpump’s] Rules in its second; add producer to the list right behind author, restaurateur and interior designer. The English rose proves it’s not enough to be just a pretty face - oh but she’s that too, having opened more than 28 establishments with husband, Ken Todd, Vanderpump discusses her mastery for business in an interview for The LA Fashion Magazine. I had a chance to speak candidly with Lisa about PUMP, the latest addition to LA hot spots which is due to open soon in the heart of West Hollywood.

BY DANA ELIZABETH You’ve accomplished so much; from entertaining the world as one of the leading ladies on The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, to standing your ground which at times can be extremely hard to handle, especially with a camera filming your every move. You’ve impressed us with your ability to take on multiple opportunities at once; from writing for Beverly Hills Lifestyle, to Dancing With the Stars and your most recent endeavor, your new series. So tell us—what’s your secret, how do you manage to get it all done?

I feel like I’m doing a lot of things right now, as I’m coming off of filming; DWTS, Vanderpump Rules, Housewives, running Villa Blanca, and working on my new restaurant opening in Santa Monica, Pump. I feel as though I may be stretching myself too thin if I can be honest. But there have been some incredible opportunities and sometimes you regret the things you don’t do rather than the things you do when opportunities come along. But I’ve had an incredible time the last three years since I’ve come into the public eye.

Truthfully, I usually get up at 6:30 and don’t go to sleep until around twelve. I don’t watch a lot of T.V. and you will rarely see me out on the red carpet; I prefer to spend the time I do have with family and friends and with charities that I care about. I’m a spokesperson for G.L.A.A.D. (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation organization) that’s very important to me. It brings me to my latest venture, which is going to be a gay bar and restaurant in Santa Monica, Pump.

What is going to be different about Pump, vs. SUR or Villa Blanca?

Oh, they’re going to be very different. The location of Pump is right in the middle of Boystown and will have an outdoor garden oasis. We’ve been working with the city to construct an elegant garden and it looks as though it will open in November. It’s right next to the Abbey, so it sets the standard in terms of décor. When it comes to all of our restaurants we try to make each unique. For Pump, we’re going to fill the garden with 100-year-old olive trees and large Ficus trees to make you feel as though you are in a French garden. We’ve really tried to create an oasis within the city.

Are there any other charities in particular that you support that you’d like our readers to get involved with as well?

Well I do get involved with several charities. I spoke to the American Humane Association this year and at the Hero Dog Awards. I support the N.A.A.F. (National Alopecia Areata Foundation), where I took Giggy this year. It draws awareness to these young kids who virtually can lose all of their hair overnight. We brought Giggy because he has alopecia coupled with severe allergies and has lost all of his hair. It’s a way to say to children this hasn’t slowed him down. I remember saying to the children, ‘would you like to change him or do you think he’s cute without his fur?

And the children replied “Oh, we love him! We think he’s perfect just the way he is,” and I said “That’s the way people

feel about you. You are who you are and don’t let people change you.” Villa Blanca also manages to take the food over to the local church every Monday to help with our ongoing fight against homelessness and hunger here in the states.

Can you talk about your book, Simply Divine? Do you have any tips, and decorating tricks that you’d care to let us in on? Perhaps something simple, you can share with our readers, something you didn’t include in the book.

Simply Divine is really aimed at trying to take the fear out of entertaining. It’s about being prepared, preparing early, making things that aren’t that difficult that can still be great. It’s about really trying to make things visually beautiful and to build up a collection as you go along. I’ve been married 31 years and I’ve always loved entertaining. The truth is I could have written this book three years ago, but no one would have bought it. That’s really the platform that Housewives has given me.

When it comes to decorating & entertaining do you have any tips and tricks you might be able to share with us?

Well I think ambiance is very important and you should learn to make two or three basic dishes that you literally cook before and put into the oven to warm up.

In my book there’s a great Shepard’s Pie recipe that’s very easy to do. Or a great roast chicken with Jackie potatoes. Just do something that, even if simple, is done really well. Really enjoy it and try not to take it too seriously. But I am very ambiance driven, you’ll see in my restaurants there are always flowers and nice lighting: always have great lighting and try to put something on the table.

Not to go too far back—but could you share a bit about your experience on Dancing With The Stars, would you have changed anything at all about your time on DWTS?

Dancing WithThe Stars was an incredible experience. I just felt really honored and privileged to have been offered the chance, especially being one of the first Housewives chosen. But boy, I had no idea how tough it was going to be to fit it into my life! You know in that last week, I was going to New York and back, dancing six or seven hours at a time. Then doing three live shows back to back and dancing for twenty hours, then getting on a plane for 12 hours and battling a fever…You know either way I had a great time. All the cast were so supportive of each other. It was such a wonderful experience and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity.

Can we talk about the success of your two local restaurants? You and Ken have over 28 successful restaurants, but the two that seem to get the most press are SUR and Villa Blanca You know it’s about creating a niche and trying to create something that an area doesn’t have. I tried to create something that Beverly Hills didn’t have and it’s about finding something you are good at. You know, I have SUR and Villa Blanca and now Pump is opening, which is going to be casual dining because the way it’s going to be decorated. It’s going to be a place where people can relax, listen to music and get away from the world.

When it comes to style, what would you say best describes your personal style and taste?

I always say dress for your body type and shape. Always stay true to what shape works best for you. For me, I wear a lot of Dolce & Gabbana, whose cuts work very well for me. I find they really do cut very curvy; I need dresses that are cut like that. I like things that are slightly masculine, such as Alexander McQueen. That being said, I also love simple jackets with epaulets. Always, always accessorize. I love wearing well-cut jeans, and a nice black jacket.

You are a successful businesswoman, entrepreneur, wife, mother, producer and writer. I read recently that you are also looking to add the title of designer to that list. Is it true? Are you coming out with a luxury Jewelry line?

No, unfortunately not, however I have been offered it. To be honest I’ve been a bit crazy-busy lately. I will have something for the home coming out, you know, home products and that sort of thing. I’d love to eventually design everything; from home to clothing. It’s one of the reasons why I love Ralph Lauren so much, because he’s really a designer that has mastered it all. Truthfully it’s about a lifestyle and building a brand.

I do however have a line of sangria that Pandora and her husband are developing. It’s my recipe actually, and it’s called LVP Sangria. I’m really happy about it. We’ve sold sangria for years now in Villa Blanca and it’s always done really well. The first one is going to be pink and it should be available in November. So, you know—thinking pink, drinking pink—you can mention that (laughing) So Lisa, you are originally from London—but could you tell us about your journey to the states and finally deciding to settle here in Los Angeles. Why L.A.? Was it a decision that both you and Ken decided together?

Well, you know Pandora went to Pepperdine and we were living in Monte Carlo at the time and we just decided that with Pandora heading to Southern California, we just decided that the lifestyle suited us all. I always said to my children, “You can leave, go wherever you want but I’m coming with you.”

So Pandora went to Pepperdine and we went too.

That’s so lovely. Speaking of Los Angeles, what’s your opinion of LA as far as style? What’s your take on Los Angeles design?

I love Los Angeles because I think it’s a great easy way to live; everything is accessible to you. But if I’m being honest—I miss the architecture of Europe and the quaint streets and cobbled roads; I really do miss all of that. If I go back to the South of France I find that I miss the history and pageantry of Europe. I live seven minutes from the Beverly Hills Hotel and if you’ve seen my house, it looks as if I live in the midst of Switzerland, yet I’m five minutes from the city. I mean where else can you see that in London or in New York?

other loves, Lollipop, Pikachu, and your newest edition to the family, Rumpy Pumpy …

Yes, and I love them all. I have five dogs actually; Pink Dog, Floozy, Pikachu, Lollipop and Rumpy Pumpy: he’s a Golden Retriever. It means, sort of, like--playful sex in England, and he’s a gorgeous man, but he’s very naughty—he’s six months old! (Laughing) Recently, Lady Gaga, who’s set to release her newest album, ARTPOP tweeted in support of you.

How do you feel about such a popular current iconic figure reaching out to you?

You know honestly, I’m surprised really…I’m always flattered that some of the most interesting people come up to me at times. People who I think are iconic and I’m completely surprised that these people know who I am. I mean, I think to myself, how do these people know me—I’m just some woman. I guess the show does reach a wide demographic. But still, it’s always quite the surprise. And really, I’ve suffered a bit on the show and I think the audience sees that and I think that our viewers and audience are incredibly supportive and kind. They’re smart and can see through what’s depicted on the television.

What would you say to those that have ‘wronged’ you in the past? Is there anything you’d like to get off your chest?

I just think that when people say negative things about you, it says more about them than it does about you. Don’t let it define you, don’t hit back---if you start to, I think it takes you to a whole different place and I don’t want to be in that place. That’s not who I am and the day I do…it’s the time I should get out of this business.

What advice do you have for other entrepreneurs’?

As they say “Find something you love to do and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Be passionate about what you do.

But of course we all need to tread water and pay our bills.

I said to my son who is waiting tables at a restaurant right now, “I’m not going to pay your bills, you have a god given talent to play the guitar, play the guitar-but in the mean time you’re going to pay your bills.”

Brent Shapiro Foundation Fundraiser

H

igh atop Beverly Hills on a gorgeous 20 acre estate, one thousand guests showed up on

a warm September Saturday night to the Brent Shapiro Foundation event to help raise awareness against drug and alcohol abuse. Robert Shapiro (of O.J. fame) and his beautiful wife Linell lost their first-born son, Brent, to an overdose eight years ago.

Since then, their annual fundraiser event brings in hundreds of supporters and Hollywood’s elite. The evening started with a steady stream of stars including Paula Abdul, Sugar Ray Leonard, Larry King, The Housewives of Beverly Hills and Orange County, donning the red carpet with a sit down dinner after.

G Haute Couture and 20 gorgeous models graced the 120-foot runway as a show opener in flowing chiffon and sparkling sequined gowns, followed by Robert and Linell remembering their son, the reason for the event, and introducing award recipients. In a very touching moment, The Brent Shapiro Foundation awarded two college scholarships to Jalene Velez and Luis Jacinto, both of whom are ex-drug and alcohol abusers.

They were both radiant with future promise as they thanked Mr. and Mrs. Shapiro and the Foundation, both bright, shining clean examples of a battle won.

A

t nine months pregnant, Veronica sits on her couch in her Manhattan home. Her body is tired as she expects to deliver her child at any moment , but her excited spirit is reflected through a genuine sparkle in her eyes. She tries to get herself comfortable moving her throw pillows around, she pulls her hair back, wears s minimal make up letting the light reflect on that natural pregnancy glow.

She is about to become a mother and launch another season of Style Fashion Week LA. She smiles so unself-consciously as I thank her for letting me interview her one day prior to her due date. “I need to get done as much as I can before the baby arrives, there is no down time” she replies.

The California native understands the meaning of hard work, dreaming and setting large goals.

She watched her parents work their way to a beautiful life in Orange County where they were able to provide for her. Hard work was instilled in her at a very young age. “I come from a poor family on both sides where most of them were field workers. Even my father started working at the fields when he was five years old.” Her diverse background also played an integral role in molding who she would become, “I grew up in a very mixed family, what I mean by mixed is, my mother is Mexican and Chinese and my dad is Filipino and white. Growing up in Orange County in a neighborhood where all the kids had blonde hair and blue eyes, I often wondered how come I did not look like that, I felt different. I had to work that much harder.” Her parents expected excellence from their only child and Veronica could not dare to let them down, “I had to focus, as my dad always says. I set large goals and I went for it.”

I asked Veronica what makes her successful and she answers humbly “I have no fear.” She remember waking up every morning to a meditation session. “My mother would play positive tapes in the morning, some of my favorites were from Wayne Dyre.” she mentions.

Positive thoughts and affirmations programmed her mind to always think of the positives. She learned to be open and able to create anything and everything she wanted.

“A lot of people create their own limitations for whatever reason because of the way they grew up. I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to be better, to be the best and strive for my dreams. Most importantly they taught me that we have the power to create our own destiny and that we are responsible for our own lives.” Welch tells me.

By the time she was ready to attend college, Veronica had a very clear vision in her head. At Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, CA, she chose International Business and Marketing as a major. “I wanted to major in something that would allow me to do things I love such as traveling, being social and communicating with people.” Her superb social and communication skills landed her various sales jobs right out of college until a small marketing and PR firm changed her life “I worked in the sales department at a small marketing and PR firm. We worked events and my job was to find sponsors. I was number one at pulling in the most sponsors, bringing more money than the rest of the team combined. I felt like I needed to learn more about this since it was naturally coming to me.”

After only one year of working at the marketing firm, Veronica and her entrepreneurial spirit, felt she was ready to open up her own marketing and PR business. Bubblefish

Media was thus born. “I remember my first event with Bubblefish Media, HBO’s Comedy Festival with Eva Longoria.

Soon after, I got a call from Chicago’s mayor to work with Obama and producing a large parade. I remember arriving in Chicago all by myself and staying at the W Hotel. I think I must have been 24 at the time. I remember looking out the window and seeing SUV after SUV arriving to pick up politicians for the parade. It was surreal, I couldn’t believe I had pulled it off.”

The events kept on coming and Bubblefish Media was a great success. Veronica then decided to venture into fashion.

She got her own showroom at the LA Mart where she started working with celebrities handling PR, marketing and product development. A few years later, in 2009, Veronica was ready for a change so she packed her bags and moved to Miami for a brand new experience. As soon as she arrived at the international port, things fell into place.

“I started producing events for Miami Fashion Week where at this point, Mercedes had pulled the plug on LA fashion events so I acknowledged a huge opportunity for a new LA Fashion Week.” While in Miami, Welch met Karim Atash, a sought-after fashion event producer, who helped her dream of a new LA Fashion Week come true. After thousands of phone calls, hours of hard work, hundreds of meetings and several sleepless nights, Style Fashion Week LA debuted in March of 2011 presenting the Fall 2011 Collections of Los Angeles and California based designers. Veronica Welch and partner Karim Atash put on a week long event that brought professionalism, fun and glamour back to Los Angeles Fashion Week. “Our first season was a success. We started with 9 designers and 2 shows per day in 5 days. Now in our fifth season we will be showcasing 50 designers. It’s going to be massive. We have a 42,000 Sq. ft. tent, two runaways and expecting to accommodate 20,000 people.” Veronica shares excitedly.

ment Group (AEG) one of the leading sports and entertainment companies in the world, affiliated with a collection of companies including over 100 of the world’s preeminent facilities such as: L.A. Live (Los Angeles, CA), Colosseum at Caesars Palace (Las Vegas, NV), MasterCard Center (Beijing China) just to name a few, is teaming up with Style Fashion Week LA to make it a worldwide phenomena. “Now that Style Fashion Week LA is deemed the Official LA Fashion Week by the City of Los Angeles and recognized as the largest, most influential fashion event of the season, we are so excited to be partnering up with AEG. LA Fashion Week is only the first stop of many more to come.” she says. Her plan is to expand Style Fashion Week to Chicago and Shanghai in the near future. Veronica and husband Lee Jay are also venturing out in other industries. Little Fox Cafe, a posh Manhattan coffee shop and The Wash House, a laundry mat/ bar in New York City are two of their newest projects. “We just want on keep on building and growing in every aspect of life and be able to provide a well rounded life for our child and the many more to come.” Veronica smiles as she shares with me her husband’s wish for a big family.

When asking Veronica what she does in her free time, her and her mother Raquel who was sitting by her side throughout the entire interview chuckle, “well, in my free time I got married and now have a baby” she then adds: “It’s really been exciting to know that we do have complete control of who we are and who we make ourselves to be.

It’s not easy being good at something. It’s a constant struggle but if you keep your eye focused, continue following your dreams and be positive, you get there.” Veronica pulls her arm out and shows me her favorite bracelet with an inscription that reads “Live the life you dream, dream the life you live.” She then looks at me with conviction as she places her hand on her 9-month old belly and says in regards to her bracelet: “I know it’s such an opened ended expression, but why not? Since we only have one life on this earth why not make it the best you possibly can. We create our own destiny, let’s make it a great one.”
