AUSTIN - Governor Greg Abbott today issued an Executive Order (GA-34) lifting the mask mandate in Texas and increasing capacity of all businesses and facilities in the state to 100 percent. The Governor made the announcement at Montelongo's Mexican Restaurant in Lubbock in an address to the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce.
"With the medical advancements of vaccines and antibody therapeutic drugs, Texas now has the tools to protect Texans from the virus,” said Governor Abbott. "We must now do more to restore livelihoods and normalcy for Texans by opening Texas 100 percent. Make no mistake, COVID-19 has not disappeared, but it is clear from the recoveries, vaccinations, reduced hospitalizations, and safe practices that Texans are using that state mandates are no longer

needed. Today's announcement does not abandon safe practices that Texans have mastered over the past year. Instead, it is a reminder that each person has a role to play in their own personal safety and the safety of others. With this executive order, we are ensuring that all businesses and families in Texas have the freedom to determine their own destiny."
During his remarks, the Governor discussed the incredible advancements that Texas has made that allow the state to open fully and lift the mask mandate—noting the rapid increase of vaccines. Nearly 5.7 million vaccine shots have been administered to Texans, and the state is now administering almost one million shots each week. By next Wednesday, about 7 million shots will have been administered in Texas and over half of seniors in Texas

likely 4-5 times that amount. The number of active COVID-19 cases is the lowest since November—meaning more Texans are recovering from COVID-19 than contracting it.
This executive order rescinds most of the Governor's earlier executive orders related to COVID-19. Effective next Wednesday, all businesses of any type may open to 100% capacity. Additionally, this order ends the statewide mask mandate in Texas. Businesses may still limit capacity or implement additional safety protocols at their own • Bridges

will have received a vaccine shot. By the end of March, every senior who wants a vaccine should be able to get one. The vaccine supply continues to increase so rapidly that more and more Texans will soon be eligible to receive a vaccine.
The Governor noted that Texas has a surplus of personal protective equipment and can perform over 100,000 COVID-19 tests a day. The state has invested in a variety of anti-body therapeutic drugs that have kept thousands of Texans out of hospitals. Texans have also adopted daily habits that reduce the risk of COVID-19 exposure and infection. More than 2.5 million Texans who were lab confirmed for COVID-19 have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic, and experts note the total number of Texans who have recovered from COVID-19 is

discretion.
If COVID-19 hospitalizations in any of the 22 hospital regions in Texas get above 15% of the hospital bed capacity in that region for seven straight days, a County Judge in that region may use COVID-19 mitigation strategies. However, County Judges may not impose jail time for not following COVID-19 orders nor may any penalties be imposed for failing to wear a face mask. If restrictions are imposed at a County level, those restrictions may not include reducing capacity to less than 50% for any type of entity.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Last week a church member called me with exciting news. A La Feria pharmacy had 150 COVID-19 vaccines for first come, first serve. She had already been vaccinated. But she was thinking of others. This virus affects people differently. That is true in more ways than physically. For some the virus awakens their compassion and care for others. Then there are those whose selfishness shows. I refer to the Canadian, millionaire couple. They flew to the US for vaccinations posing as hourly hospitality workers at a motel. Then, there were two young women a few weeks ago who masqueraded as elderly to receive the vaccine. You know the world is upside down when the rich act poor and the young act old. Desperation will do that to a person. But one does not have to be desperate to commit self-centered sin. Saint Paul advised, “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.” - Mark S. Ross DMin.

Vela fuels Warriors to Sweet 16 By KEVIN NARRO Staff Writer

Santa Rosa is back in a familiar spot. While the calendar flips to March, so do the Warriors as they punched their ticket to their eighth straight Sweet 16 after a 65-58 win over San Diego. The Warriors trailed 27-20 at the half but managed to buckle down in the second half. Senior

Chris Vela fueled the second half surge netting 32 points for Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa’s defense surrendered just 13 points in the third quarter and outscored San Diego 46-31 in the second half. Along the way Santa Rosa ran past Lyford 87-42 in the bi-distrcit round, then clipped Bishop 61-57 in the area round.

Lionettes ranked 15th in the state By KEVIN NARRO La Feria News The Lionettes soccer team are off to a strong start in 2021. La Feria is currently 7-2 overall and are 5-1 in district play. According to the Texas Girls Coaches Association, La Feria is ranked 15th in the state. The Lionettes are the only Rio

La Feria News concerning Abbot’s order (LFN) While this executive order does allow for higher occupancy and masks not being required, local governments, schools and business may still require masks to be worn. La Feria ISD has already issued a statement indicating that all current protocols will remain

in place even after the governors order goes into effect Wednesday. More cities, school districts and offices will give similar or further guidance in the coming week. Hopefully things will continue to improve and more normalcy can be restored in the coming month.

Local CVS Pharmacy Receives Surprise Vaccine By Nelda Briones On Monday March 1, 2021, CVS Pharmacy in La Feria received a last-minute call that there were about 100 Pfizer Vaccines that were left over from another location and

that the pharmacy would be receiving them. CVS employees called local businesses that the vaccine would be distributed around 2:30pm. Not too long after the notice there was a line forming around the side of the

store. Local residents had to endure the cold and light rain as a cold front had just arrived. One local resident stated that it was worth it waiting an hour or two because they had been trying to get vaccinated at

other sites but people were lining up the night before and there were always long lines. At this time the only CVS stores in the valley giving out the COVID-19 vaccines are in Brownsville, Elsa and Pharr.
