third-place winners with respect to their category. They had contestants for four different categories, one for the best floats, the best band, the best Drill Team or Dancers, and even parade horses. The winners were announced and given trophies that evening at Memorial Park.
The Festival, as mentioned, was at Memorial park and had Live music by The Texas Showdown band, an obstacle course, a train ride, a bouncer, a rock climbing wall, and some fun things from individual’s booths.
The entire Christmas parade & festival is a great endeavor that Val Champion, the Los Fresnos Chamber Director, says takes everyone coming together to accomplish.
They all are vital to making such an event possible.
What makes these festivals come together are the people that spend hours into making it happen. The Chamber of Commerce is the main hub for all planning when it comes to these events, in addition, they provide all the different blow-up houses, the rock climbing wall, the Train ride, and all other rentals.
Mr. Champion wanted to bring special attention to the volunteers from Communities in Schools and HOSA kids. Champion shares they had 15 volunteers help with supervising the festival being sure kids were being safe while still having fun. He thanks Aurora Brito with HOSA and Leticia Pereira with Communities in Schools.

Brownsville, Texas — Looking for a musical for the entire family? Camille Playhouse in Brownsville is showcasing the Sound of Music on December 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, and 18th. Artistic Director for this year’s season, Brandon Binder, share that this is something that hasn't been put on since the 60s.
Binder admits it wasn't his original proposal. He originally purposed the Christmas Show, "We wanted something holiday oriented, but also that (would) bring in a lot of people and is pretty well known," Binder says, "There were a couple of others that were thrown into the mix aswell," but after much discussion, the board seemed to keep coming back to The Sound of Music.
"It obviously has come to fruition,” the director adds, “with different people auditioning and with how many tickets we've sold going into opening weekend," they believe it was the right decision.
President of the Board of Directors, Martie DiGregorio shares her excitement for this
production, “A lot of winter Texans are coming down during this time,” DiGregorio says, “And they LOVE the classics!” She says they remember that and its those classics that just don’t get old.
“If it’s familiar to them, they’re never gonna say, ‘Oh, no, I’ve seen it a million times.” Classics are classics, and so many from Brownsville and surrounding areas are very excited about this production.
Currently, this is Camille Playhouse’s 59th season. Being the oldest community theater in the Valley! And DiGregorio adds the oldest south of San Antonio! Such great history behind this community theater, and DiGregorio shares they’ve received some grants recently that they’re planning to use for some renovation there at Camille Playhouse.
Finally, Martie DiGregorio says she wants the community to know that Camille brings much more than just entertainment, “We educate and we inspire,” she says it’s not just about entertainment, and she hopes every individual is able to take something away from each show and performance.

Generally, crowns are necessary in instances when too little of a damaged tooth remains to support a filling or after a root canal has been done.
Crowns are also used to attach a bridge, restore fractured teeth, cover badly shaped or discolored teeth or in conjunction with dental implants, to restore missing teeth. To prepare a tooth for a crown, the tooth is reduced so the crown can fit over it. An impression of the tooth and surrounding teeth is made and sent to a lab for crown fabrication. A tempo rary crown is carefully fitted over the tooth, until the next visit when the permanent crown is placed onto the tooth. Your dentist’s main goal should be to create a crown that looks like your natural tooth. To achieve this look, a number of factors are considered, such as the color, bite, shape, and length of your natural teeth.
Crowns may have porcelain fused to a metal structure, may be all ceramic or gold, and may be attached to implants. When the procedure is complete, your tooth will not only be stronger, but it may even be more attractive! Regular cleanings with your dental provider and daily brushing and flossing, to remove plaque from the crown area, is vital with crowns. Contact our office if you would like more information; we’re happy to help you make the best decision.

Salazar, Falcons Power Past PSJA North
By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News
Within the last two years, Los Fresnos’ JJ Salazar has emerged as one of the top players in the Rio Grande Valley. Salazar showed why on Tuesday Night as Los Fresnos defeated PSJA North 61-52.
After being outscored in the first quarter, Los Fresnos turned the tide and outscored the Raiders in each quarter. Despite outscoring the Raiders in the second quarter, powered by a 12 point second by Salazar, the Falcons still trailed 32-30.
A tough task for the Falcons, the Raiders were led by the freshmansenior duo of Mason Lopez and Gianni Beltran, both who finished with over 20 points.
Continuing to be a back-and-forth shootout between the Raiders and Falcons, Luis Ramirez and Luis Guerra teamed up to dominate the boards for Los Fresnos, picking up 10 points from second chance buckets. Despite Beltran being the key rebounder and leading scorer for PSJA North, Los Fresnos would Hold on to win 61-52.
“The guys came to compete, We played a
great game”, said Falcons Head Coach Marco Hinojosa.
After the rough first quarter, Hinojosa made some adjustments.
“We pride ourselves on defense and always say offense will take care of itself, that didn’t happen in the first”, said Hinojosa. “There were some adjustments and we finally woke up, won the rest of the quarters and that’s what basketball is about. This team has shown a lot of fight this year.
A core of returners for the Falcons, JJ Salazar, Gio Galvan, Jude Barrera, Luis Ramos and Luis Guerra all contributed to Los Fresnos’ win. “This season, our motto is ‘We over Me’.We know that’s what it’s going to take”, said Hinojosa. “These guys are very unselfish, We’re averaging about 1415 assists per game. They trust each other and we have balanced scoring”.
Salazar, who led the Falcons offense with 28 points, spoke on his performance alongside his teammates. “Our team was able to limit them and we rebounded the ball well” said Los Fresnos Junior JJ Salazar.
Down 18-13 at the end of the first, Salazar
and company knew that they needed to get in gear. “Coach talked to us and we just took it all in”, said Salazar. “We came here, it was an hour drive. I wasn’t going to lose and neither were my teammates. We just wanted it”.
In what was a power struggle for the lead between LF and PSJAN, Salazar had a 12 point second quarter to turn the tide and sparked the offense for the Falcons.
“They were able to help me get open. When I was not open, my team did a great job in attacking and getting to the basket”.
With the win Los Fresnos improved to 12-4. The Falcons will compete in this weekend’s City of Palms Classic in McAllen. “We’re there to get better, we got Alice to come Thursday, and we’ll have our hands full”, said Hinojosa. “It’s been a fun tournament the past couple of years. Looking forward to getting better and preparing for district”.
“I’m ready, it’s going to be fun. Ready to see some players I played summer ball with”, said Salazar.
“We are all ready to get after it”.
Redemption
Lady Falcons capture 2022 BISD Tournament Championship
By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News
BROWNSVILLE- There is no sweeter feeling than the feeling of redemption. This past weekend, the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons captured the BISD Tournament Title this past weekend. For the Lady Falcons, this tournament felt more special and had more significance. Last season, the Lady Falcons lost to the Edinburg Vela Lady Sabercats in the BISD Tournament Final, which was their only loss of the Tournament.
` This Year, Los Fresnos came into the tournament with the mission of winning it all. The Lady Falcons did just that. After losing their opening matchup to Harvest Christian Academy, Los Fresnos knocked off Raymondville, Santa Rosa, Brownsville Rivera and Brownsville Lopez on their way to the championship. Los Fresnos was then slated against Harvest Christian Academy in the BISD
Tournament. After a close game, Los Fresnos pulled away to capture the BISD Tournament Platinum Bracket.
“The Girls definitely wanted some redemption”, said Los Fresnos Lady Falcons Head Coach Alex Lucio. “They set goals before the season started and winning this tournament was one of them”.
In a weekend of redemption, Los Fresnos was also avenging their loss over Harvest Chrstian. Los Fresnos lost the tournament opener to HCA in a 68-63 thriller. In the championship game Los Fresnos defeated HCA 61-54, slipping away from a tough contest.
“Hats off to Harvest Christian, they are a very well coached team”, said Lucio. “It was definitely a fun game to be a part of”, said Lucio. “In the huddles, we went over our adjustments and responsibilities. Our Girls do a great job of having each other’s back.
The Key Core of the Lady Falcons offense returned for 2022-23.
Maritza Ortega, Aylene Ortega, Shiloh Jones and Olivia Parra all made their presence felt on the court. Despite a short season, the chemistry from last season carried into this season. Two new players Dakota Martinez and Mia Ordaz came into basketball from Volleyball.
“I think the chemistry is getting better and better each game,” said Lucio. “It started a bit slow but we’re on a steady pace. Our chemistry has not peaked but we’re in a good spot right now.”
Olivia Parra, who led the Lady Falcons offense in the win over HCA also spoke on her team’s tournament victory. “We really wanted to come back for redemption and win this tournament”, said Parra. “We know it was something we could do.”
Finishing the Tournament with a 5-1 record, Los Fresnos now sits at 15-4 on the season.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS
– DEC. 1, 2022 – A 375-foot-long replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall will be on display at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on April 20-23, 2023.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) recently chose UTRGV as a stop on the 2023 national The Wall that Heals tour that includes the replica wall and a mobile Education Center exhibit that tells the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era surrounding the conflict. The free exhibit is designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a historical and cultural context.
“The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is honored to have been selected to host this very special exhibit in partnership with the City of Edinburg,” said Dr. Jeffrey Ward, dean of the UTRGV College of Fine Arts, which is presenting the exhibit. “At UTRGV, we honor our service members and veterans,
including those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.”
The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, will be on display on the grounds of the Community Engagement and Student Success (CESS) Building, a UTRGV off-campus facility located at 1407 E. Freddy Gonzalez Drive. The Wall and exhibit will be open 24 hours a day to the public.
The Wall honors the more than 3 million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam.
Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk toward the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in Washington, D.C. In addition, visitors to the exhibit will be able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall.
“The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile
exhibit to Edinburg, to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF. “Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on America.”
The exhibit will also feature a photo display dedicated to “Hometown Heroes” – service members whose names are on The Wall who list their home of record within the area of a visit.
The digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area are honored through VVMF’s In Memory program, which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died.
In addition, the exhibit will feature video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall; educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at The Wall in Washington, D.C.; a replica of the In Memory
"We are honored to have the opportunity to host the Wall That Heals in our city. Edinburg is known as the ‘Hometown of Heroes,’ and it’s important we pay homage to not only our local heroes but also the thousands of men and women whose service and sacrifice have allowed us to enjoy the freedoms we have today,” said Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr.
The 2023 national Wall That Heals tour is sponsored by USAA. Through a partnership with the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA), the trucking industry, and Blue Beacon, the exhibit can travel across the country. Local sponsors are UTRGV and the City of Edinburg.
Since its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been on display in more than 700 U.S. communities, in addition to an April 1999 tour of the Four Provinces of Ireland and a visit to
The Wall That Heals is a program of VVMF, the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., in 1982. The Wall That Heals is the only traveling exhibit affiliated with The Wall in Washington, D.C., and includes the largest Wall replica that travels the country. Two VVMF staff members lead volunteers on site, educate visitors and students, and ensure the reflective atmosphere of The Wall.

Father’s surgery inspires De La Pena to enroll in TSTC’s Surgical Technology Program
curriculum.
“My father was bedridden due to a work accident that nearly caused him paralysis,” she said.
“I’m grateful for the surgeons and the surgical technologist who saved his life. After I graduated high school, my father mentioned that he used to attend TSTC. I performed an online search, and I noticed the Surgical Technology program.
The idea of working in an operating room excited me because it’s a challenge to learn the various tools and equipment that are needed in the event of a surgery.”
De La Pena said her program experience has been enjoyable.
(HARLINGEN, Texas)
– To fathom the idea that a family member will undergo a muchneeded surgery can be a disheartening reality.
Elisa De La Pena, of Weslaco, remembered the day her father required surgery at an area hospital.
That memory would influence her decision to enroll in the Surgical Technology program at Texas State Technical College’s Harlingen campus, where she is in her first semester studying for an Associate of Applied Science degree.
She initially became interested in sports medicine as a student at Hidalgo High School.
“I was very active in athletics,” she said. “I found it appealing when I observed how the sports trainers improved the physical fitness of other student athletes after they suffered an injury.”
“The program is challenging and critical thinking is applied,” she said. “The instructors are easy to approach when we have a question about the assignments. Everything that has been taught during online lectures and hands-on training has occurred in clinicals. My favorite hands-on training has been the surgical case setup. Every student arranges a table with the necessary tools and equipment needed for a surgery.”
She said the program teaches about a family connection in health care.
“The mindset is to treat a patient like a family member,” she said. “I recall my father’s surgery, and that led me to this future career at TSTC.”
She is determined to master the program’s
“I want to learn as much as possible so I can become an expert,” she said. “The experience in clinicals is surreal and fast-paced. My preceptors are excellent to work with and provide excellent guidance. They place us in many scenarios for a potential surgery.”
De La Pena said her future career plans include a couple of options.
“I want to gain experience and become a surgical first assistant,” she said. “Another option is a traveling surgical technologist.”
Marissa Gonzales, a TSTC Surgical Technology instructor, said De La Pena shows great character as a selfdriven student.
“Elisa does not allow intimidation to overpower her initiative and willingness to try,” she said. “Her ambitions
are evident through her attention to detail, picking up on skills, additional practice time and shining in hands-on training.”
According to onetonline. org, surgical technologists can earn a yearly median salary of more than $50,930 in Texas, where projected job growth for the profession was forecast to increase 18% from 2020 to 2030.
At its Harlingen campus, TSTC offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in Surgical Technology and an occupational skills achievement award in Sterile Processing. For more information, visit tstc.edu.
Expansion of UTRGV Spirit Program Hits The Ground Cheering
her duties, she will handle future performances, competitions, community and campus appearances, and camps, to list a few.
“I could go on listing everything,” she said with a small laugh. “But mainly, it is to preserve the integrity of the program and promote what we do, promote school spirit and show our support of athletic teams, campus organizations and the community.”
IT TAKES A TEA m

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – DEC. 7, 2022 –
“We got spirit, yes we do! We got spirit, how about you!”
UTRGV students voted last year in favor of a proposal to support growing programs at the university, including women’s swimming and diving, marching band, football, and expansion of the spirit program.
For the spirit program, that meant recruiting a new team of coaches to kickstart the initiative.
First up was Isela ‘Sel’ Gomez, a UTRGV alumna, who was welcomed back in September as the new head coach for the Spirit Program. She will lead and support Cheer, Dance and the Vaquero mascot, along with working with Rudy Mata, the new program coordinator for Spirit and Traditions.
Gomez graduated from legacy institution UTPA with a bachelor’s degree in Dance with an emphasis on Ballet and Modern, and
was a dedicated member of the UTPA Modern Dance Company.
Upon revisiting the dance studio, she said everything felt the same – from the look to the smells to seeing a poster of her senior project. It really felt like coming home.
“It was an instinct to come back home. To come back where my roots were, to come back where I learned a lot of the experiences in the dance world,” she said. “Getting to return to campus and be part of it in a different aspect – and to be that person to give back – it really sealed the deal.”
ONE. TWO. TH r EE.
Gomez carries a significant dance-related resume. She worked for the Mission school district for about seven years, where she helped elevate several dance programs, and took on a number of varied roles, including director of the Mission High Flyers Dance and Drill Team, director of the Mission High School Folklorico Company, and
color guard instructor.
“I know the experiences I have will help when it comes to planning what we do when we have the new football team coming along,” she said.
“At Mission, I did also work with the band and I hope to be able to do that here, connect that bridge. Everyone knows the band and dance teams are on the field together, or when the band is performing, the dance team is moving. I am looking forward to the collaboration.”
She also worked with members of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers, RGV Vipers Snake Charmers, and took master classes from the Houston Rockets Cheerleaders, Dallas Mavericks Cheerleader Dawn Benett, and other nationally renowned choreographers such as Sam Allen, Melissa Miles and Anthony Burrell.
Gomez currently is observing university programs and events and is taking notes in preparation for next year. As part of
Gomez won’t be alone in building up the Spirit Program. She is working alongside Lorissa Saenz, the cheer coach; Olympia De León, the dance coach; and Rudy Mata, the program coordinator. She said she looks forward to learning from each person and to learning about their specialties.
Mata was hired in early November as the Spirit and Traditions program coordinator. He will support Gomez with administrative responsibilities for the program, and will help manage requests for team appearances and performances. He also will work with Student Activities to plan campus events that incorporate the spirit program.
The Midwestern State University graduate holds a bachelor’s degree in general business and a master’s degree in sport administration. He also was part of the MSU Cheer Team for about three years.
A friend told him about an opening at UTRGV for the coordinator position, and after reading the description, Mata knew it was an ideal fit for him.
“It combines my love for cheerleading and my
professional experience in programming and events,” he said. “It is honestly a dream job, and I never thought I would ever find an opportunity to work with a college spirit program.”
Mata has been involved in cheerleading for more than 15 years, as either an athlete or a coach.
He has a nearly six-year background in parks and recreation, he said, and he feels his experience helped lead him to this position.
“I am excited for the university taking such a serious approach to expanding the existing program and I’m happy to be part of this growth,” he said. “The spirit program already has a great reputation as a competitive team, so I’m looking forward to the new opportunities.”
ScHOOL SPI r IT – WE GOT IT
It is no secret now. Football is coming to UTRGV. Mata and Gomez agree that the Valley is more than ready for a college football team and all that it entails.
“And the spirit program will be right there cheering them on,” Mata said. “This expansion is going to add a whole new level to the
Gomez said she already sees the talent and dedication the dance and cheer teams are bringing to events, and she wants to help foster that.
“The team is more experienced, they’re more advanced, they’re more mature. I am looking forward to seeing what they can do,” she said. “I know the program is anticipated to grow a lot, and I’m happy to be part of this new expansion at UTRGV.”
