Brady’s Grill, being opened for close to a month now, has gotten some good traction. So La Feria News decided to revisit the TexMex Restaurant with some follow-up questions but also to see for ourselves how the business has been going. And one of the things that Ms. Leal emphasized was feedback. That’s the key for Ms. Leal, from customers to employees, she says, speaking of the employees, “They have to feel acknowledged… and I feel like by bringing that, everyone’s just happy. If you come in with that daily, and you just reinforce them with positive comments” she says that, by showing them everything she appreciates about them it makes them enjoy their

job and the environment and in turn makes them better servers to guests. She also thinks it’s good because she says she gets their feedback, “They’ll give me their ideas as well, as employees.” Leal says that she enjoys hearing new ideas and what guests might like to see at Brady’s Grill, from both the employees and the guests. In our first story, which you can find on our website, Ruby Leal expressed her love for working in the restaurant from serving guests, to now serving her employees. Well, it seems to really speak volumes through the workers and servers. A lot of positive feedback has been given towards the friendliness and great service that these quality waiters and waitresses have been able to provide. Leal says that

details important to her. “From picking the coffees, and types of teas, picking the ingredients, and not just settling for anything” She also expresses once again how blessed she feels to hear all the positive feedback and how much it means. “And for not being from this city and having that support from people that I don’t know, it’s very humbling.” And says that she hopes to continue to provide the food and service that people love. She really wants the customers to love the food and says they are working every day to make the little adjustments to make the most homely, and positive environment for everyone. Ruby hopes to have the grand opening by the end of January or early February.

one of the big things is that she notices how the workers really enjoy working with each other and everyone seems to have that team spirit in mind. Here is some of the reviews that we found… Jen Mtz “This is definitely the new breakfast spot great prices and great selection with daily specials. Waiting staff is great! Carlos is a great waiter pays attention to detail and thrives and getting everything right with a welcoming smile. Good job Carlos see you next time!” Mike Rios “Super deliciosa la comida el asado de puerco. muy sabroso y te atiende con mucho respeto.” Angel Olguin also noted about Brady’s grill: 1. Friendly environment 2. They were able to

accommodate to our food requirements. 3. Fast service 4. Staff makes us feel welcome. 5. The place is clean. Ms. Leal thanks her family for all the encouragement and support through it, she says that her parents instilled a drive within her. Having grown up with 6 siblings she says, “Seeing what they did and what they accomplished and hearing their stories of how they came from not having very much and still being able to provide for us.” That’s where she got that determination she says, “It was just something that they’ve instilled in me.” Ms. Leal expresses that she’s making sure all the ducks are in a row and she tries finding the littlest

(StatePoint) Diabetes is a chronic condition that leads to serious lifethreatening complications, however many people go undiagnosed and are undertreated -- a situation being further exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, understanding risk factors, symptoms and the importance of early diagnosis and action is essential. More than 34 million people in the United States are affected by diabetes, and one-in-five of them are undiagnosed, according to estimates from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health services organization Cigna reports that between January 2020 and June of 2021, nearly 800 of its patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were found to have undiagnosed diabetes. Only 14% of those people had previously been diagnosed with pre-diabetes. So why are so many people living with diabetes going undiagnosed? Cigna claims data shows that those at higher risk of having social or economic obstacles to health, also had a higher risk of undiagnosed diabetes and COVID-19, which can compound problems. “As is the case with many medical conditions, timely diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is impacted by persisting health inequities that affect

certain communities and populations,” says Dr. Mandeep Brar, Cigna medical director and board certified endocrinologist. “Factors such as race, ethnicity, access to healthful food, education, health care coverage and language barriers, to name a few, all contribute to undiagnosed cases of diabetes.” However, according to Dr. Brar, early diagnosis is critical for everyone: “When diabetes is left untreated, it will progress, causing complications such as neuropathy, kidney disease, diabetic ulcers and wounds, amputations and other serious and life-threatening issues. If you’re living with diabetes, the sooner you’re aware of that, the more quickly you can learn to manage your condition and prevent it from advancing.” According to Cigna, here are three steps everyone can take today: 1. Understand signs and symptoms. Sharing any new symptoms with your primary care provider can be crucial in early detection and proper, timely treatment. Symptoms can include frequent urination, excessive thirst or hunger, unexpected weight loss, cuts or bruises that are slow to heal, frequent infections, very dry skin, extreme fatigue, and blurry vision, according to Dr. Brar. 2. Get screened. Schedule an annual preventive checkup or diabetes screening.

Regardless of symptoms, one of the most powerful ways to detect diabetes is to be screened for this disease with a simple blood test by your primary care provider. If diagnosed with prediabetes, there are a number of lifestyle changes you can make to reverse prediabetes and prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems. These changes include eating healthfully, increasing physical activity, losing weight and managing stress. 3. Assess risk factors. Some people are more likely to develop diabetes than others. In addition to being 45 years or older, risk factors include being overweight, having a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes and being physically active fewer than three times a week. Additionally, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at higher risk than white people for developing Type 2 diabetes. If you have any of these risk factors, request a screening test with your primary care provider, regardless of your age. For a quick, online Type 2 diabetes risk test, visit diabetes.org/risk-test. Get savvy about the disease. Understanding symptoms and risk factors can mean early detection and better outcomes.

First Baptist Church, La Feria The name Desmund Tutu may not carry a lot of weight in South Texas. But in South Africa the deceased Anglican bishop, who only stood 5’4” tall, was a giant. His stature was based on his willingness to confront injustice wherever he found it, even in the church. He once said, “When the missionaries came to Africa, they had the Bible and we had the land. They said 'Let us pray.' We closed our eyes. When we opened them, we had the Bible and they had the land.” Tutu’s perspective was larger than Africa or Anglican. He championed the oppressed whether they prayed like he did or did not pray at all. He said, “God is not upset that Gandhi was not a Christian, because God is not a Christian! All of God's children and their different faiths help us to realize the immensity of God.” Desmond Tutu saw the world as small. We are all in it together. But he saw God as large. A large God and a small world. In a place as big as Texas it is easy to get those backwards.

Over the Holiday Break, The La Feria Lionettes competed in the 2021 Lyford Holiday Tournament.16 teams were invited to compete in the three day tournament December 28th through the 30th. After a great start on day one, The Lady Falcons kicked off day 2 play against the Harvest Christian Lady Eagles, one of the powerhouses heading into the tournament. From the Start, the Lionettes and Lady Eagles played an intense game as both teams tried to take control early on. In what was a back and forth battle throughout the game, Harvest Christian took control in the late stages of the game to capture the win over the Lionettes 51-45. With this loss, the Lionettes were placed into the Gold Bracket. Next up on day two, La

La Feria Lions Set To Begin 2021-2022 Soccer Campaign

By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News

The La Feria Lions are in the final preparations as they are set to begin the 2021-2022 soccer season. After finishing 3rd in district with an overall record of 3-6-1 and a district record of 3-4 last season, The Lions look to make a serious run towards the postseason in 2022. La Feria clinched a playoff spot last season, suffering a loss to Hidalgo in the BiDistrict round. La Feria will compete in a non-district tournament where they are slated to face off against 32-6A’s Brownsville Hanna and Weslaco. District Play is set to kick off January 28 on the Road against

Port Isabel. The Lions face the Tarpons again on February 22. Other key District matchups include Rio Hondo on February 15 and March 11 to close out the season. The Lions also will take on the Riverview Rockets on February 11 and March 8. La Feria lost both meetings against the Rockets last season and look to return the favor this season. What starts off as a tough non-district calendar which transitions into a tough district schedule in 32-4A, The La Feria Lions are determined to turn around last season and kick off 2022 with big wins over 6A powerhouses. La Feria’s challenges in district play are going against Riverview, who

swept the Lions last season, and Rio Hondo, who they last played in the 2019-2020 season. Although a while since they faced off, both teams met three times in that season. La Feria won two of the three meetings, including a win in extra time in the third game and a last second goal in the first game. Against Riverview, the Lions last beat the Rockets in January of 2020. However the Last three meetings have gone to Riverview. While The Lions have some tough and exciting matchups in 2022, La Feria looks to make a statement and not only aim for a playoff run, but also a District Title.

Feria faced off against the San Isidro Lady Tigers, La Feria took control from the start as the Lionettes outscored the Lady Tigers by ten points to make it 18 to 8 at the end of the First Quarter. The second quarter was more of a defensive battle as only eight points were scored between the two teams. La Feria still was in control of the game to make it 24 to 10 at the half. La Feria’s momentum continued into the second half as they maintained control both offensively and defensively, out-scoring the Lady Tigers 23 to 14. La Feria defeated San Isidro 47 to 24. In the Championship game of the Gold Bracket. La Feria Faced off against the Santa Maria Lady Cougars. From the opening tipoff, dominance was the name of the game for the Lionettes as they managed to control and outplay the Cougars both on offense and defense. La Feria’s high powered offense was led by

Kaya Dickerson and Alani Garza who combined for 28 points to defeat Santa Maria 37 to 23. Lillian Martinez and Mariah Pattan also propelled the offense and defense. The Lionettes are set to begin District Play Friday, January 7th on the Road against Rio Hondo. “As long as we’re playing together and doing what we’re supposed to do on offense and defense, we’re going to be alright” Lionettes’ Head Coach Delia Lopez on her team heading into the District Schedule. The District Home opener will be Tuesday January 11th vs the Raymondville Lady Bearkats.

How to Put the Power of STEM in Your Kids’ Hands

The Next Chapter Poem

Far Away

You pack your bags and get in the car; you drive for a little yet feel so far. You think to yourself “Did I forget something?” Your mind says no, but something is nagging. You figure it out and turn around. You run inside, such a quiet sound. You get back in your car and continue to drive while thinking of your old home and life. You see the buildings big and large, which soon disappear, replaced with huge forests, you soon get drowned in fear. “My life was so different!” You say to yourself, “My little old bedroom and mom’s wooden shelf.” You finally make it to a five-hour drive would have been four if not for that beehive. You take a step, then a few steps more. You finally make it, then you knock on the door. You hear footsteps and excitement takes over. Your fear goes away lower and lower. The door opens and someone steps out, “please come in, ya little sprout!” Poem by Selene Olguin 12 years old.

(StatePoint) Want to encourage your child to embrace science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education both inside and outside of the classroom? Studies show that kids who are exposed to STEM concepts from a young age are more likely to show interest in pursuing STEM careers. With over 50% of the fastest-growing jobs related to STEM, it’s no wonder that competency in these areas is a strong indicator of future career success. But STEM education doesn’t just help students go directly into STEM careers. Its focus on creative problem-

solving, critical thinking, innovation and teamwork helps students develop the skills needed to succeed in any field. Here are some of the simplest ways to get kids excited about everyday scientific concepts, creativity and STEM: • Encourage kids to actively participate in STEM-related activities at school and at home. Not sure where to turn? Students and families can check out the range of free content and downloadable lesson plans available at FriXionSTEM.com. for students in grades K-12 in an effort to make STEM education easy and accessible. • Expose budding scientists to high-quality learning tools, such as Pilot’s line of FriXion erasable pens, markers and highlighters. The first and only “STEM Pen,” FriXion is the only writing instrument to be Authenticated by the experts at STEM.org. The unique, thermosensitive, erasable ink inside every FriXion pen makes it ideal for everything from taking lab notes and reviewing reference materials to demonstrating scientific principles and covalent bonding. These writing tools allow students of any age to draw, erase, highlight and revise easily and cleanly, so they can take on STEM tasks fearlessly. • Keep content engaging for your child’s age group. Know Your Options if Your Home Loan Payment Suspension is Ending (StatePoint) Is the COVID-19-related payment suspension (also known as a forbearance) on your home loan ending? Ready to resume making mortgage payments? Understanding your options and being proactive can help ensure a smooth process, say experts. “Loan servicers are currently reaching out to customers through emails, letters and calls to help them with exiting forbearance. Responding to this outreach promptly is crucial,” says Rulon Washington of Wells Fargo, who’s worked with nonprofits throughout the pandemic to educate homeowners on what they’ll need to do as their forbearance plans come to an end. Below, Washington answers common questions homeowners have when exiting their forbearance: Can I move missed payments to the end of the loan term? In most cases, if you were current on your mortgage or home equity payments when the suspension started and are ready to resume your regular monthly payments, you may be able to move missed payments to the end of the existing loan term. This additional balance won’t accrue interest and will be due when the loan is paid in full, refinanced, or when the home is sold. What other options are available? You may have the option to pay off missed payments in full or follow a repayment plan, which divides what’s due into manageable amounts, and adds it to the regular monthly payment. What if I need help with a lower monthly payment? If you need a reduced payment, you may qualify

for a loan modification. Wells Fargo and several investors provide streamlined, no-document modification review processes in many cases. What if I can’t afford reduced payments and need to sell? Your loan servicer can work with you as you attempt to sell your home, and in many cases, enable you to take advantage of the strong increases in U.S. home prices. Who controls how my loan is handled? Many loans are insured, guaranteed or owned by third-party “investors” who set the rules for how loans are managed. Investors include government-sponsored enterprises, like Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, government agencies, such as FHA, VA or USDA, banks and private companies. While many investors offer similar programs to help homeowners coming to the end of a payment suspension, exact programs may vary. Will my home be foreclosed if I stay in forbearance or can’t resume payments? Servicers will not move to foreclosure or eviction on anyone who remains in an active, approved payment suspension plan. In the case of Wells Fargo-owned loans, all foreclosurerelated activity and evictions have stopped on occupied properties through the end of 2021, except in very specific cases. For loans Wells Fargo services for other investors, we follow the investor’s requirements for customers as they exit payment suspensions. “We’ll make every effort to reach out to customers to discuss deferral of missed payments,

modifications and other available programs before advancing or initiating foreclosure,” says Washington. What if I’m exiting a COVID-related forbearance but have been impacted by a natural disaster? Contact your loan servicer for options during this difficult time. Other Resources No-cost housing counseling agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can help assess your situation, navigate available programs and even work with your servicer on your behalf. To find an approved agency, call HUD toll-free at 1-800-569-4287 or visit www.hud.gov/counseling. Additionally, states, U.S. territories and Native American tribes are being granted federal funds designated for helping qualified homeowners address payments missed during a suspension and with payments going forward. Check with the appropriate housing finance agencies or contact a housing counseling agency for information about when these funds may be available and to determine if you might qualify for assistance. Finally, Wells Fargo mortgage and home equity customers can find additional information at wellsfargo.com/ repaymentdetails or can call 800-219-9739 to speak to someone who can help review their circumstances. “If your payment suspension is ending, help is available. Be sure to contact your mortgage servicer for next steps,” says Washington.
