The Humane Society of Harlingen is always in need of support and recently they had reached shelter capacity. They are asking the community to consider adopting or fostering a pet. Sometimes adoption fees could be waived and fostering a pet comes at no cost. If you foster a pet all items needed to care for them are included. It really helps out the shelter even if you just foster. From a very young foster pets that need constant care to older pets that may need a loving temporary home. Some shelter pets get very stressed from the

noisy shelter environment and need that extra loving care that they might not receive otherwise. The Humane Society will be having some upcoming events and hope some pets could be adopted. On Saturday October 30th the shelter will be at the City of Harlingen’s Halloween in the park, which is a free city sponsored event that takes place from 5-8 p.m. The shelter will be there with some pups that will be available for adoption and will be giving out treats for your pets. The shelter was also invited by Harlingen Fan Convention to be in attendance to their Premier on November 6 & 7. They will have a puppy

room set up for both days of the event. You will be able to adopt a pet for Free. Also, if you bring in a bag of food for either cats or dogs you will get 15% off your tickets. The Humane Society has events going on all year long to help pets get adopted. They also need items all year long to keep the shelter running. Some of the items on their wish list are: PET CARE SUPPLIES: Kitten/Puppy Bottles, Kitten/Puppy Formula, Kitten/Puppy Wet Food, Adult Dog Wet Food, Adult Cat Wet Food (Pate), Kitten/Puppy Dry Food, Adult Dog Dry Food, Adult Cat Wet Food, Bowls, Heating Pads/ Discs, Toys, Treats, Stuffed

Animals, Fleece Blankets, Pet Beds, Kitchen Scales, Thermometers, Any Pet Medications (Specifically Probiotics, NutriCal, Lamisil), Diaper Rash Cream, Shallow Aluminum Baking Trays, Potty Pads, Baby Wipes, Travel Carriers, Wire Crates, Pop-Up Kennels, Collars (all sizes), Non-Retractable Leashes, Flea Combes. MAINTENANCE SUPPLIES: Bleach, Laundry Detergent (Pods Work Best), Towles/Rags, Trash Bags (tall kitchen, large yard, and contractor), Blue Dawn Dish Soap, Clorox Wipes, Disinfectant Sprays, Bottle Water, Fly Traps, Non-Toxic Rodent Deterrents, Hand

Sanitizer, Paper Towels, Paper Plates/Bowls, Plastic cutlery, Office Supplies (Printer Paper, Pens/ Pencils, Staplers/Staples, Paper Clips, Scissors, Tape/Dispensers, Dry Erase Boards, Dry Erase Markers, Sharpies, Post-It Notes, Postage Stamps), Trash Cans, Batteries(AA, AAA,9V). New Self Sufficiency Fund Grant 2 • October 20, 2021• LA FERIA NEWS

TSC helps those most in need with careertraining grant

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (October 7, 2021) - Families that are facing financial hardships and need the required construction trade skills for employment can rely on Texas Southmost College for training, thanks to a Self Sufficiency Fund Grant recently awarded to the college by the Texas Workforce Commission. The $351,794 grant, the first of its kind for TSC, was awarded during a presentation at the TSC International Technology,

Education and Commerce Center (ITECC) training labs and will allow the college to provide training to adult Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) recipients, as well as individuals at risk of becoming dependent on public assistance.

“It is wonderful and an honor to have been awarded our first Self Sufficiency Fund Grant because it truly supports our mission of providing innovative learning opportunities for the families that are the heart of our community,” said TSC President Jesus Roberto Rodriguez. “We’ll be able to train 188 students whose lives are going to be transformed immediately.” Rodriguez added that the TSC Board of Trustees has invested more than

$23 million in expanding learning spaces and equipment, including stateof-the-art workforce training labs to enrich students’ educational experiences. The grant will help provide training in welding, plumbing, insulation, scaffolding, forklift driving

and electrical work.

“Training in key highdemand, middle skilled job fields help promote selfsufficiency and changes the lives of Texans, offering a pathway toward upward mobility,” said TWC Chairman Bryan Daniel. “This grant to Texas Southmost College serves as recognition for their commitment to training the workforce of Texas and helps provide employers with skilled labor needed to fill jobs across the state.” The Self Sufficiency Fund Grant pays for training costs, including certifications and course materials so graduates are ready to be placed in fulltime employment. The goal is for graduates to become and remain independent of financial assistance and

can better provide for their families.

“This Self Sufficiency Fund Grant is an amazing thing for our college and those we serve,” said TSC Trustee and Past Chair Adela

Garza. “The partnership we have with the Texas Workforce Commission is changing so many lives and I know firsthand because TSC is my school too, and without it, I wouldn’t have my degree. The investments

we make in our community is how we continue to grow together.” For more information about TSC’s Workforce Training programs or how to apply for a scholarship, visit tsc.edu/wtce.

Shrdlu Our Office Cat Back to Work Shrdlu our Office Cat has returned to work, as has all our help, and everything has returned to near normal. Shrdlu is quite happy now that we’ve promoted him to editor. He doesn’t know why, but last week we had a colonel written up as a plain, ordinary, every day lieutenant. Also, we let a word or two get by that was not spelled too well. That’s the reason we’ve turned the job over to the cat. Nobody can bawl out a cat. EDITOR’S NOTE: Shrdlu our Office Cat is a feature that ran weekly in the 1948-49 editions of La Feria News. We’ve been trying to discern the identity of the cartoonist that produced the Shrdlu feature, but haven’t been able to find any information online. Our best guess is that Shrdlu was a syndicated filler feature by cartoonist Nathan Collier, a journeyman cartoonist, active mainly in the 1920s. Collier was born in Orangeville, Illinois. He studied at the Acme School of Drawing and at the Lockwood Art School. He did cartoons for the Chicago Journal, Judge, Life, as well as the feature ‘Our Own Movies’ (1920). His panel ‘Little Journeys to Yesterday’ alternated with ‘Wouldn’t It Make You This installment of Shrdlu our Office Cat ran in the January 6, 1949 issue of La Feria News.

“In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue.” That was how I learned the story of the discovery of America. It was a great story about a heroic man and his three small ships. As it turned out, the only accurate part of the story involved the three ships. Christopher Columbus was anything but heroic and what he discovered had been occupied for thousands of years. States are beginning to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day. The story my grandchildren will hear is not the story I heard. I am sad that they will miss the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria. I am glad they will miss hearing about a man who tortured, enslaved, and exterminated whole people groups. And those he could not kill, he forcibly converted. The word gospel means good news. The day the first Americans saw Columbus’ ships was news, but it was not very good news. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Battleground Funeral Wreath

The Next Chapter Poem Life

Our lives are precious we keep them safe, and though we spare some; some are put to waste. How do we know that those children aren’t smart? To have the ability to touch someone’s heart. “The more the merrier”, some people say, yet all we do is kill and slay; therefore, I can say my own death was put at bay. I hope one day we all can smile and make every moment worth the while. Poem by Selene Olguin

12 years old

Matthew 19:14But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for such belongs in the kingdom of heaven.

The flowers that bloomed in Flanders Field Belied the doom that war does yield. As soldiers fought beneath the sky, Some would return, and some would die. To survive such horrors felt Can scar the body, and soul can melt The pain each soldier holds inside. The tears each family wept and cried Should make us pray and lead us to heal. May our hearts seek peace and love that’s real

DRUNK DRIVING KILLED 963 PEOPLE IN TEXAS LAST YEAR

TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign urges Texans to celebrate fall football season without driving under the influence RIO GRANDE VALLEY– Football is a huge part of Texas culture, and with the new season upon us, TxDOT’s Drive Sober. No Regrets. Statewide Impaired Driving Campaign is encouraging fans to celebrate responsibly by always finding a sober ride. “Fall football is a timehonored tradition in our state, but one regrettable decision to drink and drive could turn game day into a jail time or a deadly crash,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. ”Whether fans are tailgating with friends or celebrating their team’s big win, we want everyone to enjoy the season responsibly.” A person in Texas dies every nine hours and six minutes in a DUI-alcoholrelated traffic crash. Last year, 963 people in Texas were killed and 2,114 seriously injured because someone chose to get behind the wheel while impaired. Drinking and driving is

100-percent preventable and can have serious physical, emotional and financial consequences that can last for years. Not only can a DWI hurt or kill someone, it can be expensive and cause legal hassles. It can create difficulty finding or keeping a job. It is shameful and embarrassing, and can result in a loss of trust and regret. A DWI crash can devastate the lives of victims and survivors forever. There are many sober ride options available. Designate a sober driver, call a taxi, use a rideshare service, stay put, call a friend or family member or use mass transit to ensure you don’t drive impaired. Throughout the fall, TxDOT’s Drive Sober. No Regrets. campaign will conduct outreach events at college campuses across the state in conjunction with football season. These events will include a video exhibit, featuring video testimonials of Texans who deal with the daily consequences of drunk driving, either as

No Regrets. campaign is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel, like wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. November 7, 2000, was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways. Valley Baptist Abuse Response Team Serves as Advocate for Valley’s Vulnerable HARLINGEN – For victims of abuse and domestic violence, the road to healing and justice can be a difficult one to travel, but Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen is ensuring that some of the most vulnerable in the Rio Grande Valley do not have to travel that road alone. Through its comprehensive medical forensic program, the Child to Adult Abuse Response Team (CAART) – the only program of its kind in the Valley – Valley Baptist provides aroundthe-clock critical services to child and adult victims of abuse, neglect, and sexual assault. Offering services since 2006, the abuse response team provides care to more than 100 patients each month, in addition to working with partners and advocates throughout the community and testifying in legal court cases involving abuse. As part of the services offered by the abuse response team, specially trained sexual assault nurse examiners who are also skilled as forensic nurses care for patients in a calming and secure treatment room designed specifically for victims of abuse, where doctors and nurses can provide medical care to the community’s most vulnerable. Sonja Eddleman, a licensed sexual assault nurse examiner, Child Abuse Resource and Evaluation Team clinical coordinator with Driscoll Children’s Hospital and CAART clinical director for Valley Baptist Health System, said the abuse response team is an important tool in caring for patients, especially as the community continues to deal with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. “When patients come to the hospital, they expect that their medical needs will be met including: a comprehensive medical history, injuries documented and treated, testing and treatment for pertinent diseases, collection of items that

have potential evidentiary value and providing resources for the next steps along the path,” she said. “The forensic nurses on the Child to Adult Abuse Response Team along with other medical team members provide comprehensive services wrapped in compassion. The compassionate services provided are instrumental in helping the patient with the next steps of the investigation and the potential for the case to go to court.” The month of October serves as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and there is a dire need of increased awareness for the victims of assault and abuse who suffer throughout the community. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, approximately 1.3 million women and 835,000 men are victims of physical violence by a partner every year. In addition to those statistics, 2.9 million cases of child abuse are reported annually in the United States. The services provided by Valley Baptist are vital to the physical and emotional wellbeing of the victims – children, women, and men who are often shrouded in social stigma, Eddleman said. “Valley Baptist has established community relationships with law enforcement and local nonprofits to connect our patients with the resources they need to be safe after discharge,” she said. “We are committed to providing quality, aroundthe-clock, compassionate care to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in our communities, and to supporting all efforts to reduce further violence.” In addition to the services it provides daily, Valley Baptist Health System is also set to host the 18th annual seminar in forensic sciences, scheduled for November 3-5. This year the seminar will be held virtually in order to protect our attendees and speakers during the ongoing COVID pandemic.

The seminar will provide current information to those involved in child abuse investigations, including; law enforcement officers, Child Protective Services workers, social workers, attorneys, nurses, pediatricians, medical examiners, forensic pathologists, coroners, psychologists, EMS personnel, school and day care personnel, clergy, and other professionals. The special three-day conference will address ways to prevent child abuse, techniques used in child death investigations, and other current issues involving child abuse and domestic violence. “The seminar will provide up to date information, standards of practice, and evidence based research,” Eddleman said. “This is imperative for all professionals that touch the lives of children and have the opportunity to speak, act, and take a stand to protect the children. The victims of abuse and domestic violence are waiting on us to help them.” Presenters for the conference will include Breall Baccus, Public Policy Coordinator at the Texas Council on Family Violence; Andrew Campbell, an expert on domestic violence; Dr. Marguerite DeWitt, faculty member of the Criminal Justice Program at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and one of the founders of the Valley Baptist CAART program; Sonja Eddleman; Dr. Stanley Fisch, Professor of Pediatrics, Dean of Students at the UTRGV School of Medicine and longtime Valley Baptist physician; and Pritesh Ghandi, Chief Medical Officer of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. For more information on services provided by Valley Baptist, visit www.valleybaptist.net. For more information or to register for the conference, visit www.fsseminar.com or call Stephanie Hamby at (956) 389-1721.
