First Baptist Church, La Feria Facebook has been taking heat for its new name, Meta. In Hebrew meta means death. Not a very attractive pick for a new name. But meta can mean many things. Usually, we interpret it as “beyond.” Zuckerberg’s vision is that Facebook will move beyond simply social media. And that Meta can facilitate social communities. I am sure the company also hopes the new name will help it move beyond the bad publicity of putting profits ahead of people. In the Bible, new names are nothing new. God gave Jacob a new name. God knows he needed one, as he had cheated not only his brother but his blind father. God renamed him Israel, which means fights with God. From cheater to God fighter may be an improvement but not a great one. Shakespeare observed that changing the name does not change the smell of the rose. Hopefully Shakespeare is wrong and Facebook’s new name will improve the fragrance.

City of La Feria Zoning Board of Adjustments-Variance Request Notice of Public Hearing

On Monday November 22, 2021 at 6:00 PM the City of La Feria Zoning Board Of Adjustments will hold a public hearing to consider a Variance to allow a Mobile home on a lot zoned MF-Multi-Family District for the following property: Property located at 212 Arroyo Street, La Feria Texas, the legal description being: Arroyo Alto Subdivision Lot 10 Block 2, Cameron Appraisal District ID # 176120, Property Owner: Heriberto Hernandez III. The public hearing will be held at 6:00 PM. in the City Commission Meeting Room, 115 E. Commercial Ave, La Feria, Texas. All interested persons are encouraged to attend the public hearing to voice their opinion regarding the granting of the requested Variance. Interested persons may also submit written testimony to: City of La Feria Attn: Planning Department 115 E. Commercial Ave. La Feria, TX 78559-5002 The City Commission meeting room is handicapped accessible. Persons with disabilities or who require auxiliary aids or services to participate in this hearing should contact the City Secretary two days before the hearing so that appropriate arrangements can be made. To request additional information, please contact Juan Ortiz, Planning Director at (956) 797-2261

To: All interested Agencies, Groups and Individuals This is to give notice that the Town of Combes has conducted an evaluation as required by Executive Order 11988 and/or 11990, in accordance with HUD regulations at 24 CFR 55.20 Subpart C Procedures for Making Determinations on Floodplain Management and Wetlands Protection. The activity is funded under the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs HOME Program under RSP 2019-0028.The proposed project(s) is located at 21306 Pickens St., in the Town of Combes, Cameron County. The proposed activities will be for the purpose of reconstruction a minimum of one (1) and a maximum of fifty (50) single family home(s) on scattered sites in the floodplain of Combes, Texas. The maximum assistance, in form of a grant or loan, per unit for reconstruction will be the lesser of either $120.00 per square foot or $135,000 total. The size of each footprint is approximately 1,500 sq. ft. The states benefit of the project is to provide decent, safe housing for affected residents. The potential adverse effects will be minimized because the construction will occur on existing footprints and the units will be elevated out of the floodplain. The total number of acres of affected floodplains is approximately one (1) acre. The Town of Combes has considered the following alternatives and mitigation measures to be taken to minimize adverse impacts and to restore and preserve natural and beneficial values: The reasons why the action must take place in a floodplain is because the homeowners have no other properties to re-locate to and the Town does not have other properties available to exchange with the homeowners. In addition, all environmental concerns could either be minimized or mitigates and no other suitable arrangements can be made to assist the affected households and the benefit of the assistance outweighs the environmental concerns. The alternative was considered and rejected. This alternative leaves the qualified homeowners with no recourse for assistance. The Town will hire an engineer to conduct an elevation survey of the property. The engineer will then provide an elevation certificate to the Town and the homeowner. In addition, the engineer will place a stake on the property indicating the height the new structure needs to be in order to be 12” above the base elevation. The Town is in compliance with all state and local floodplain protection procedures. The Town of Combes has reevaluated the alternatives to building in the floodplain and has determined that it has no practicable alternative. Environmental files that document compliance with steps 3 through 6 of Executive Order 11988 and/or 11990, are available for public inspection, review and copying upon request at the times and location delineated in the last paragraph of this notice for receipt of comments. There are three primary purposes for this notice. First, people who may be affected by activities in floodplains and those who have an interest in the protection of the natural environment should be given an opportunity to express their concerns and provide information about these areas. Second, an adequate public notice program can be an important public educational tool. The dissemination of information and request for public comment about floodplains can facilitate and enhance Federal efforts to reduce the risks and impacts associated with the occupancy and modification of these special areas. Third, as a matter of fairness, when the Federal government determines it will participate in actions taking place in floodplains, it must inform those who may be put at greater or continued risk. Written comments must be received by the Town of Combes at the following address on or before November 19, 2021: Town of Combes, 21626 Hand Rd., Combes, TX 78535 and 956425-7131, Attention: Marco Sanchez., Town Mayor. A full description of the project may also be reviewed from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at 21626 Hand Rd., Combes, TX 78535. Comments may also be submitted via email at agutierrez@townofcombes.com. King of the Jungle Lions capture District 16-4A D1 title after hard fought win over Hidalgo

Lions raise up trophy in celebration after winning the district title.

By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News Week 10 saw the La Feria Lions take on the Hidalgo Pirates in another round of 16-4A D1 play. However, this game had an added stipulation. A victory for the Lions meant

that they would be crowned the District 16-4A D1 title. A Stipulation that the Pirates were well aware of heading into that matchup. The Lions quickly wasted no time. In the opening drive, which was a very productive one, Lions’ Quarterback Aaron

Trevino caps it off with a 13-yard QB Draw into the endzone. Trevino would later punch in a two point conversion. The lead was quickly cut down to one point as on the ensuing drive for the Pirates, Quarterback Steven Martinez connected a nine

yard pass to Tight end Daniel Carbajal. Now with the Lions back on offense, The Pirates intensified their defensive pressure as linebacker Tadeo Lara picked off a pass by Trevino. Hidalgo would later take advantage of the interception as star Running Back Enrique Hernandez takes it into the endzone with a 15-yd run. The First quarter ends with the Pirates over the Lions 14-8. La Feria’s Zion Dickerson tore up the turf as he led the Lions’ rush attack as he later punched a one yard run into the endzone. Trevino later finds the endzone again off an 8 yard run, and after a failed two point conversion attempt, the Lions settle for 6. On the last drive for the Pirates, Martinez was looking to go deep, only for Lions’ Elijah Vela to pick it off. La Feria up 2114 over Hidalgo going into

the half. Hidalgo opened up the third quarter with Martinez taking matters into his own hands and ran a one yard QB Draw to tie the ball game. Both Defenses stole the show in the third quarter as there were multiple third down stops, and a turnover on downs against the Lions. The fourth quarter began with Hidalgo’s A’dhron Zepeda tacking a seven yard touchdown run to take the lead. The Lions’ defense makes a key stop, which the offense takes full advantage of as Trevino finds Julian Torres for a 53-yard touchdown pass to tie it up once again. Now with Hidalgo back on offense, La Feria shuts down the high powered Pirate offense. Hidalgo’s ensuing punt would be downed at the Lions’ eight yard line. Aaron Trevino, who is known to be an efficient leader on the Lions’ offense, goes the

distance with a 92-yard QB Draw to take the lead and eventually the win. In a great game between two high powered offenses and two explosive defenses, a game that saw 5 total lead changes. The Lions defeated the Pirates 34-28 and would be crowned the 2021 District 16-4A D1 champions. Another District title adding to an already decorated Lions’ football program.

The Next Chapter Poem

Forest

The birds sing sweetly in the trees and the leaves sway gently in the breeze. The tiniest animal burrow into a tunnel, while a stream flow all so subtle. The brave wolfs run through the grass as a tiny rabbit tries to pass. Even though somethings move faster or slower than others, God created everything in order.
