On Saturday December 11, the City of La Feria Parade was in full swing. This year’s theme was North Pole and with a cold front that arrived on that day made it feel like Christmas. The parade took place down Main Street. Many people came out to watch the parade this year. One resident mentioned that there might have not been as many floats this year, but it finally feels like everything is getting back to ae normal. Prizes were awarded for floats and Christmas/

Community spirit decorations that had the “North Pole” theme. First place prize went to C.E. Vail Elementary School. Second place went to Valley Baptist Family Care Clinic in La Feria and third place went to Noemi Dominguez Elementary. After the parade people gathered at Lion’s Stadium parking lot to enjoy the Christmas Festival. Also, Kenny’s Funland of La Feria set up some rides for kids to enjoy. In all it was a great night of family fun.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Late Friday night, December 10th and into the early hours of Saturday the 11th, a series of tornadoes tore through the Bluegrass state. To date, 74 Kentucky residents have died but over 100 are still missing. Some blame climate change. Doubtlessly some will claim it was God’s punishment for something Kentucky did wrong. Others simply say, “tornados just happen.” Theologically what happened in Kentucky was evil. In particular it was an example of natural evil. Natural evil are bad things in nature not caused by people. Evil caused by people is called moral evil. Natural evil stumps people of faith. How can an all-powerful, loving God let this kind of evil exist? The only answer to the problem of evil is the one given by Jacqueline Coleman the Lieutenant General of Ky who observed. "I will tell you that I saw a level of devastation that was only rivaled by the compassion and love of neighbors." The only answer to evil is love and compassion. For that we can thank God.

Lions discuss at timeout against Santa Maria. Photo via La Feria ISD Facebook page.

With Basketball season already in full swing, both the La Feria Lions and Lionettes are ready to begin district play. The Lionettes and Lions both off to a good start, including great tournament performances at the C.E. Vail and Tommie Wiseman classics. So here’s what to expect for La Feria basketball heading into district play. Last season the Lionettes finished as the number four seed in district play and suffered a loss to Calallen in the Bi-District round. The Lionettes will kick off district play January 7th on the road against Rio Hondo then have their district home opener against Raymondville January 11th. They will then play Grulla, Hidalgo and Port Isabel to wrap up the first half of District Play.

January 25th the Lionettes kick off the second half against Rio Hondo. February opens up with the Lionettes taking on Grulla on the 1st, then Port Isabel the 7th. For the Lions, they finished off 5-6 in district play and entered the postseason as the number four seed. The Lions look to improve their district record and look to capture a district title. La Feria opens up District Play January 18th vs Hidalgo then follows up against Port Isabel, Hidalgo on February 4th and Rio Hondo the 11th. With powerhouses Port Isabel, Rio Hondo and Raymondville, both the Lions and Lionettes are ready to set their sights on capturing district gold in what proves to be an exciting, fun, and competitive district schedule.

Organ Donation Still a Vital Necessity During Holiday Season

The Next Chapter Poem A Tiny Ant A tiny little ant crawling on a plant; trying to survive a wilderness so wide. As it scurries around to find some food, it sets a trap, but its plans goofed. Soon, the day meets the end, and he crawls back into his den. Oh where, oh when will he get something to fill his tiny tummy? Look there! A berry so, so yummy. Poem by Selene Olguin 12 years old

HARLINGEN & BROWNSVILLE – The holiday season is often seen as a time for giftgiving. It’s fitting then that local residents take this time to register as organ donors in an effort to give the most precious gift of all – the gift of life, said Lydia Touchet, Patient Safety Officer at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. Although National Donate Life Month is traditionally recognized in April, there’s no better time to consider registering to be an organ donor than the present since the need for organ donation is year-round. “Organ donation means life. By donating our organs, we are not only being charitable, but we are helping others to live a better quality of life,” Touchet said. “It is helping our families and neighbors to live without having to be hooked up to a dialysis machine for the rest of their lives. It means those in our community may live to see their children and grandchildren live. When we donate, we enhance someone else’s life. Our

corneas allow others to see better, our bones and tissues help others to walk and participate in other daily activities.” While Valley Baptist Health System has dedicated itself to raising awareness regarding the importance of organ donation in the Valley, the need for donated organs remains high both locally and throughout the nation. According to the Health Resources & Services Administration, more than 106,000 men, women and children were on the national organ transplant list as of today. That list continues to grow, as a person is added to the waiting list every nine minutes. And for some, help doesn’t come soon enough, with 17 people dying each day while awaiting a transplant. Nearly 12,000 people on the transplant waiting list are from Texas. Because 95 percent of adults in the United States support organ donation but only 58 percent are signed up as donors, according to the Health Resources & Services Administration, Roy Evans, Chief Quality

Officer for Valley Baptist Health System, said that raising awareness regarding the issue, especially within the local community where there are a number of misconceptions surrounding organ donation, is key to chipping away at the staggering need. “Even though we continue to make progress in educating our community, the myths related to organ donation can be difficult to dispel,” said Edwina P. Garza, senior communications coordinator for Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, the recovery agency for the Rio Grande Valley. “We continue to work hard for the benefit of every person on the waiting list and appreciate the efforts of Valley Baptist and its staff to help save lives.” For more information on how to register as an organ donor, visit the Donate Life Texas Registry web site at www.DonateLifeTexas.org.
