Last week on Monday, February 7th, the youngest author in the Valley, Selene Olguin, held a book signing at Brady’s Grill for her book ‘Animal Tails’. There she also invited her friends Nathan &

Daniel Pemberton to set up their own stand for buying keychains, part of their new project to raise money for their collaborated book that they are currently working on! Nathan, Selene, and Daniel are 13, 12, and 11 years in age, and seem to give the saying

‘age is just a number’ a whole different meaning. They are all homeschooled and have known each other since 2015. Nathan says “I first started thinking of this project almost a year ago.” He explains that he was just “really bored one day”, and he noticed his dogs looked pretty bored as well, and just like that, his imagination took flight! The story was 5 chapters in when he decided that he wanted some extra input and asked his brother Daniel to help him out. Daniel, who is an avid reader, and comic

book enthusiast, helped proofread Nathan’s story to make it more interesting and actionfilled. Shortly after, the brothers also shared their project with one of their friends, Selene. That’s when the ball really started rolling. Together they became a really great team! Nathan the mastermind, Selene the writer, and Daniel proofreading, and sharing his personal feedback. Everything began to fall into place. Nathan mentions that he doesn’t mind the help, “It’s nice to have someone that has already published a book.” He also says that it gives a different perspective of how the book could be written, and where it can go. Both Selene and Nathan agree that the hardest part of writing a book is starting it and picking where to go with the story. They said that there are just countless ways to go with it but that talking through it and collaborating their ideas is a big part of how they get over those hurdles. The main characters, Nathan says, are two dogs, which are named after his dogs, Banjo and Willow. These

two somehow find themselves zapped into a virtual world where they become trapped. Nathan explains that along the way, Willow and Banjo encounter many foes aswell as some great allies who help them escape. Nathan expresses that he enjoys writing, and he would often find himself getting excited when reading his own book. Coming back to his story with new ideas and watching it all come together is his favorite part! Selene says that one of the best parts for her is shaping and molding the story, and adding all the detail to it. Selene describes it as, “Letting your imagination just flow.” These young writers say they get their inspiration from, events that go on, and exciting new things that are happening. Nathan even expressed his love for Star Wars & Star Trek, and he likes using that as inspiration. They also love writing about their pets! Now that’s where I think they meet in the middle. Both Selene and Nathan love animals, Selene takes care of 3 dogs along with quails and

chickens, while Nathan and his brother Daniel care for Chickens Turkeys, and 3 Goats! They seem to have some of the best teamwork skills ever! They agree that the number one hardest part of this endeavor is raising the money to get the book published. Nathan even says that there were definitely times he wasn’t sure if this would really happen. Together though, they all brainstormed things they could do to raise the money. Nathan shared that he had learned how to make paracord keychains and bracelets. They all decided that was a great idea! So, Nathan taught both Selene and his younger brother how to make different knot patterns and they got to work! Since then, they’ve learned new patterns and are selling them to raise money for their newest book.

Selene sits down to sign her book for someone in La Feria at Brady’s Grill.

Nathan says he hopes to have his own bracelet business eventually, but for now, his focus will be on raising enough money to publish their book together. So what is their goal? Well, they both hope to share a story. A story of encouragement. Nathan says that his goal is to encourage other kids to be proactive in learning, to test what they know & learn, and to always trust in God, not in the world. Selene says that her goal is to be an encouragement to everyone around her and to never give up. They hope to finish the book soon and raise enough money to get it published. Sharing this fun story is more than just writing a book, it’s about teamwork, dedication, social skills, sales, the list goes on… They aren’t just better themselves, but the people around them aswell. Together, anything is possible.

JUAN V. “JV” GARCIA DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR CAMERON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS’ COURT PRECINCT #4

Shine A Light RGV can be considered a conservative blog. So, I would never have thought about interviewing a Democrat. But, candidate J.V. Garcia considers himself a conservative Democrat, so I decided to interview him. J.V. Garcia is 40 years old, married with two children. He was born and raised in San Benito who now lives in Harlingen, which qualifies him to be a candidate for County Commissioner for Precinct #4. But, his qualifications do not end there. He is a licensed civil engineer in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Texas. He has been licensed for 15 years and has his own engineering business in Harlingen. Mr. Garcia and I spoke about several issues relating to Precinct #4. However, through my own decision, I decided to focus on the flooding problems within the precinct. I was a life-long resident of Harlingen up until 2020 and I am familiar with the flooding issues associated with the area that Precinct #4 represents and one thing I know is that for several decades, the Santa Rosa/Tio Cano area has experienced flooding over and over again and nobody has fixed the problem. Mr. Garcia takes the flooding problems very seriously. He admires the resolve of those who live within the area and feels that it is time to fix the problem. When I ran for Congress, I was also concerned wih the same issue and had made a decision that if elected, I would work with the local community to

finally address the flooding. Mr. Garcia feels the same way. But, he has more to bring to the table other than making a commitment, he has the experience, training and education to actually fix it. In my opinion, Mr. Garcia is the only qualified candidate, both Democrat or Republican, since he is the only candidate who is a civil engineer. He says that with proper funding and support, he can address the flooding in the area and strongly feels that if the flooding problem is addressed, it will help in reducing other commonly flooded areas in Cameron and Hidalgo counties because the flooding issues in the area between Santa Rosa and La Feria is “ground zero” when it comes to flooding in the RGV. He is so adamant about his reference “ground zero”, that he has a Facebook page called Reinvent Harlingen Drainage because he wants to keep people updated of the problem and his ideas for fixing it. What Mr. Garcia has discovered regarding the flooding issue may be something that many of the residents of Precinct #4 may or may not be familiar with. He says that in the early 20th century, the area ofTioCano and La Torre was essentially a dried lake bed and that when farmers discovered that it was too flood prone to grow crops, they decided to sell the land for residential use, with Cameron County’s blessing and that blessing continues to this day. Mr.Garcia feels that as long as Cameron County continues to allow the ongoing approval for residential properties being

built, the flooding problem will never be fixed. When I refer to the flooding issue being ‘blessed’ is based on what is written and approve by Cameron County for decades when someone decides to build a home in the area. Mr. Garcia read to me what is written on a property description when someone is approved to build a home in the area: “The State of Texas, County of Cameron,. Cameron County Drainage District No. 5 hereby approves this subdivision on the condition that it does not warrant the adequacY of its drainage system in case of heavy rainfall and that it will not be called upon by present and future owners of any lot or lots in this subdivision to correct any drainage or flooding problems on any of the lots of said subdivision In addition, according to the documentation provided by Mr. Garcia, it states, “…Cameron County shall not be responsible for maintaining drainage improvements within the dedicated use of this plat” My interpretation is based on what was provided to me, it seems to indicate that nobody. Neither the State of Texas, Cameron County and Cameron County Drainage District #5 are responsible for the consistent flooding within Precinct #4. Maybe it’s just my interpretation but the flooding issue in northern Cameron county is the biggest and most obvious example of passing the buck. How is it even possible that as property taxes increase, none of that money is being used to address the problem

because of a loophole created and acknowledged by the Cameron County government. Not only is that happening, but, in my opinion, those who purchase property within the subdivision affected may be taken advantage of due to the fine print. Maybe it is just me, but it appears that their is a clear reason why the residents of Precinct #4 repeatedly suffer from flooding justabout every year, if not several times a year. How is that fair to those residents when for decades you have had elected officials promising to fix the problem knowing full well that as a representative of that precinct, they have no actual obligation to fix the flooding and drainage. In addition, Mr. Garcia, as a citizen reached out to the incumbent, Gus Ruiz, who essentially indicated that nothing could be done. He also reached out to County Judge Eddi Trevino via email to make inquiries on how to address the issue, but has never received a response. It is because of this lack of action by Cameron County government officials that Mr. Garcia decided to run for office. He is currently part of a national group known as Anthropozene Alliance, . Which is working across the country to address issues such as the one occurring in Drainage District #5 in order to prevent such loopholes from taking advantage of residents and deflecting responsibility to nobody and to hopefully end the flooding. Mr. Garcia says that his “expertise” in this matter and his civil engineer training will address the problem. He knows that it will have to be baby steps, but he is ready to tackle the issue. The way I see it, it is better to elect a county commissioner that not only knows what the problem is, he knows how to fix it and, as a private citizen, is working to fix it. It is more than obvious that the obstacles are there and it is long past time for the residents of Precinct 4 to have their biggest concern—flooding—be finally addressed. I lived in Precinct 4 for the majority of my life and I know what the flooding issues are. I also

have friends directly in the middle of the flood zone and have repeatedly heard their frustration. As you may be aware, the Commissioners’ Court gave themselves a hefty salary increas last year. What you may not know is that there was an increase of approximately $1 million dollars in property tax revenue. If i get this right, it was mor important for the Commissioners’ Court to give themselves a hefty sum of money and it was more important to start the process of building an unneeded convention center on Highway 100, than it was to address flooding. There is a problem with that and it it is my opinion that it is time to clean house. Mr. Garcia, is fully aware of the other issues plaguing Cameron County and is ready to address them. But, his “priority” is addressing the flooding first and foremost. My heart goes out to those residents in Precinct 4 and those living in Drainage District #5. In my younger days, as part of my job at the time, I had to travel to the Tio Cano area many times and it never ceased to amaze me how many times I saw that area under water. This was something I expressed to Mr. Garcia and instead of the situation getting better, it appears to be getting worse. Mr. Garcia’s response was something I had not heard before from any candidate in Cameron County, where Mr. Garcia, said that even if he is not elected, he will continue to address the problem and is ready to testify before the Texas Legislature, along with the residents affected so that it stops being an issue that has been repeatedly put on the backburner by a loophole. Mr. Garcia has made it

quite evident that running for county commissioner is not about his personal goals, it’s about actually serving the residents of Precinct 4. It does not matter to him whether a residen is Democrat or Republican, what matters to him is that every resident benefits from his service to them. As a former congressional candidate of the same mindset, that is something that I can agree with. In today’s political climate, that belief may sound idealistic. And that is the problem, voters need to actually believe that there are candidates out there who are willing to just speak words that mean nothing, Instead, need to know that there are candidates out there, like Mr. Garcia, who are ready to put them first. Mr. Garcia has not only brought the issue into the spotlight, he also has a solution. As I indicated at the start of this post, I want to say that Shine A Light RGV is a blog that believes in bringing information to the public. As the admin of this page, i am a conservative and mostly focus on conservative issues. But, there are going to be times where I have to express my opinion in defense of the people. That means that I have to set my party affiliation aside. With this in mind, based on what I have learned about Mr. Garcia and his extensive training and experience, I have reason to believe that he has the know-how to finally address the flooding problems. But, i also expect him, if elected, to encounter roadblocks in trying to fix the problem. After all, government bureaucracy has been the chief contributor to the prevention of fixing the flooding issue.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Late Friday night, I received a call from our security service that the church alarm had been set off. After walking through and checking the buildings, I confirmed that the alarm was false. As I passed the nursery, I saw those small bags of animal crackers. The coast was clear so I lifted one and was snacking away as I left the building and ran right into three La Feria police officers. My first thought was that I had been caught red handed stealing crackers from the nursery which is like stealing candy from a baby. The Bible verse came to mind, “Be sure your sins will find you out.” With my mouth full of animal crackers, I held out the open bag and asked, “Anyone want an animal cracker?” Thankfully the officers were more professional than I. Rather than investigating missing animal crackers, they were responding to the same false alarm. They checked out both the buildings and me. Then they let me go. I have promised to replace the animal crackers.

The Realignment Recap

A look back at the 2022 UIL Realignment

By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News

Every two years in February, the University Interscholastic League has their Biennial Realignment to determine new districts for the next two football seasons. The Realignments can always either dramatically shake up the districts or they can barely shake things up. In 2022 however, we saw some big shakeups and a few expected moves. So here’s the UIL Realignment Recap. As Always, the UIL Realignment can always shake up the standings or

barely make a difference. Of Course at times, some predictions do turn out to be true. For Instance, after many years, Harlingen South has departed from its long-time home of 32-6A to make the trip down to 16-5A D1, Joining them on their way to 5A is Donna North, who spent the last two seasons as a part of 32-6A. The Move leaves District 32-6A as a six-team district. In the move, Harlingen South reunites with a few familiar faces such as Brownsville Veterans and Weslaco East. For Donna North, their annual crosstown battle with Donna High will now

be a district battle. Three other big moves from 6A to 5A include the Departures of Edinburg Vela, PSJA North and La Joya Juarez-Lincoln to DIstrict 15-5A D1 after a long tenure in District 31-6A.The Move, just like 32-6A will leave 31-6A as a six-team district. Also Joining 15-5A D1 is the McAllen trio of McHi, NIkki Rowe and Memorial, and La Joya Palmview, who were slated in 16-5A D1 the last two seasons. Joining them as well is Rio Grande City, who competed in 14-5A D1. Other Big moves include Rio Hondo from

16-4A D2 to 16-3A D1, joining Lyford. 16-4A D2 remains consistent with Bishop joining against Port Isabel, Raymondville and Grulla. Brownsville Porter makes the jump from 16-5A D1 to 155A D2 with Mercedes, Edcouch-Elsa, and Valley View, all who were in 165A D2. Porter is the lone Brownsville School to be separated from the other 5 BISD Schools. With these moves, RGV schools will be slated against Coastal Bend Schools in District Competition such as Gregory Portland and Flour Bluff.. These Moves also leave 15 and 16-5A D2 as

six-team districts. So what’s in store for the Lions and Warriors in 2022? For La Feria, Multiple new faces come to 16-4A D1. 15-4A D1’s Alice, Calallen and Tuloso-Midway all join in to expand 16-4A D1 to a seven team district from what was a five team district. The Lone departure is Grulla who joins Raymondville and Port Isabel 16-4A D2. For Santa Rosa who reamains in 16-3A D2 Skidmore Tynan is the lone departure and now in 16-3A D2 will be George West from 153A D2 to keep 16-3A D2 a seven-team district as well.

In what was certainly a hectic and drastic Realignment, expect District Play to be even tougher with the introduction of many big coastal bend names. The Playoff race will be even more competitive with multiple six-team districts as only two teams may not punch their ticket to the Postseason. So with that, the hype and billing continues to grow as the Countdown to the 2022 Texas High School Football season continues.

Congratulations to the Lionettes on their 6-0 victory on Tuesday Final Score: La Feria 52 - Port Isabel 27 Feb. 8 , over the Lady Wildcats. Great game, Lionettes!

The Importance of Cardiac Health Highlighted During Heart Health Month HARLINGEN & BROWNSVILLE – With February serving as American Heart Health Month, there’s no better time for local residents to take control of their cardiac health. According to information from the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Those staggering figures, in conjunction with the statistic from the American Heart Association that 72 percent of Americans don’t consider themselves at risk for heart disease, are why educating the community on the importance of heart health is so important, said cardiac experts from Valley Baptist Health System. “Heart disease can lead to severe disability that can absolutely destroy quality of life for its victims and their loved ones,” said cardiologist Dr. Charles Mild. “Left unchecked, heart disease can lead to a

wide array of serious and life-threatening health complications, including heart failure, heart attack, stroke, and death.” According to Mild, heart disease most often refers to the damage to the heart or blood vessels by a build-up of plaque in the arteries called atherosclerosis. Over time, that plaque can reduce blood flow to the heart or block arteries completely. That build-up is often caused by poor lifestyle choices, he said. “Smoking, poor diet, high stress, and lack of exercise are all things that can contribute to heart disease,” he said. “The most tragic thing about these issues is that they are not genetic or hereditary – we are often doing these things to ourselves.” Two other contributors to cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, are both common in the Rio Grande Valley yet correctible issues, Mild said. “It is not difficult to take small steps to lose weight and reduce the impact of diabetes,” he said. “Start small

– reduce your sugar intake, reduce portion sizes at mealtime, don’t eat late at night and of course eat more fruits and vegetables. If you start today, you can get results very rapidly on the road to living a healthier lifestyle.” One common misconception regarding heart disease is that it is primarily an issue most associated with older men and that women should not be particularly concerned with heart health. Although research has shown that men are more likely to suffer heart attacks than women, women are more likely to die from heart attacks than men. To complicate matters, women experience different symptoms of heart attack than their male counterparts. While men most commonly experience chest pain when having a heart attack, women can experience a wide array of symptoms that often overshadow the chest pain experienced by men. “The issue is complicated by gender and associated illness,” said Valley Baptist

Physician Network cardiologist Dr. Fadi Alfayoumi. “The gender issue, which is a big one, is important because more women die from myocardial infarction than men. One of the issues is that women perceive pain differently. Women may not complain of chest pain as often as men. They do, however, complain of fatigue, shortness of breath, diaphoresis (sweating), and a generalized feeling of unwell.” According to the American Heart Association, 83 percent of Americans believe that heart attacks are preventable but aren’t

motivated to change unhealthy lifestyles associated with heart disease. Additionally 58 percent of Americans put no effort into improving their heart health. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, researchers are still working to determine the full range of impacts the disease can have on the heart. What is clear, however, is that COVID-19 can attack the heart, damaging heart muscle and causing blood clots, Alfayoumi said. Because of those effects, it is important that local residents do not delay cardiac care,

whether it’s in response to an emergency or a regular check-up with their cardiologist. “It is important that, even in the midst of the COVID pandemic, people seek appropriate medical care to address symptoms including chest discomfort, shortness of breath and palpitations that may be indicative of a cardiovascular condition requiring evaluation,” said Alfayoumi. “We cannot allow the virus to cause people to delay needed and appropriate medical care.”
