A La Ferian, by the name of Jesse Robles, is participating in the great Boston Marathon! According to B.A.A.’s website, the Boston Athletic Association was established on March 15, 1887, under its first president, Robert F. Clark. They are a non-profit organization with a mission of promoting a healthy lifestyle through running. The marathon has more than 140 athletes competing. Marathons like these are what so many athletes love. Just a chance to be a part of one of these marathons is an amazing experience. Marathon runners from all different stages of life do what they love the most, running. La Feria News asked Jesse Robles what the Boston Marathon really is and what it means to him. He responded by saying that the Boston Marathon is something like the Superbowl of Marathon. He says that it’s pretty exciting, Robles has been working for this marathon for 3-4 years. Robles was born and raised here in La Feria, and you can even find him running down US Business 83. He says he starts his run from his house all the way to the valle vista mall in Harlingen, and back. He says it’s about 10 miles there and 10 miles back! Jesse finds a lot of motivation from his Harlingen footworks club. He says that he participated in his first marathon in San Antonio about 10 years ago. Since then he has done many more marathons, several in Harlingen, one in McAllen, as well as

Houston. He’s thankful for the community he has and says that remembers the Dominguez 5k that La Feria had pre-covid and says he hopes to see it come back again. He says “that was pretty cool for La Feria to have that.” Robles has such a huge passion for running and loves seeing people from different paths and walks of life all putting in the work; all pushing themselves & putting aside the excuses to get out there and run. Initially, with covid, many of these athletes
were staying home, but eventually, Robles says they got back to running. Jesse Robles says he couldn’t let even a pandemic stop him from running and doing what he loves. "We just kept going," he says. Robles says that his biggest motivation is his mom. He explains

that his mom having Parkinson's disease has taught him that complaining isn't an option. Robles has seen all that his mother has gone through and has been by her all the way and says he can’t complain about life, because it could always be worse. There’s
always someone that has it harder. Final notes Jesse Robles says that “Family is Everything!! For Running and LifeAnything is possible, we just have to work for it.” Congratulations Jesse and from all of La Feria, best of luck!

Starlink Becoming More Available
High-Speed, Low-Latency Broadband Internet Portal is to be Integrated into the Community Buildings and County Park in Cameron County Precinct 1
60 Starlink satellites stacked together before deployment on 24 May 2019
Emilio Flores La Feria Cameron County Released on Friday, March 4th, that they will have Starlink internet services in select areas! Starlink is a satellite network service that is being developed by the private spaceflight company that we all know in Brownsville as
SpaceX. They possess some of the newest, most advanced Broadband Internet Systems out there. I mean, It’s kinda rocket science, right? According to SpaceX’s website, most satellite internet services, today come from single geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at about 35,000km, while
Starlink is a constellation of multiple satellites orbiting much closer to Earth, at about 550km, and cover the entire globe. Because Starlink satellites are in a low orbit, the round-trip data time between the user and the satellite – also known as latency – is much lower than with satellites in geostationary
orbit. This enables Starlink to deliver services like online gaming that are usually not possible on other satellite broadband systems. Why should we care about Starlink? Well, as we all are aware Russia has been attacking Ukraine, and the war is real. In that Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX
sought to help the Ukrainians & tweeted two weeks ago that Starlink satellite internet service was “active in Ukraine” with “more terminals en route,” Starlink has been able to aid Ukraine in staying in communication as Russia continues to attack and hack parts of the Ukrainian Government’s communications. The technological advancements happening with satellite internet are not only great for us, but have been aiding those in desperate need as well! So, where will the free “weefee” be, and how is this beneficial for our area? Cameron County announced on March 4th, that the integration of Starlink internet services will be available at Pedro “Pete” Benavides County Park, the Bob Clark Social Service Center, and the Public Works Warehouse in Cameron County. They plan to have Starlink up and going. The Cameron County
Commissioner of Precinct 1, Sofia C. Benavides says, “I have been trying to get service to our facilities for 16 years and to have SpaceX choose my area for the first installation is absolutely wonderful.” She continues by expressing her gratitude, “I am very grateful to SpaceX and look forward to having accessibility in the near future for all those in Precinct 1 that are eager to have connectivity.” La Feria News has reached out to find out more details on where else we might be seeing internet service by Starlink pop-up in the near future. Cameron County Judge, Eddie Trevino, Jr. says “Currently, the logistics for public use and its respective access are being discussed and finalized. I want to thank the leading space industry, SpaceX for their continued support of the communities in Cameron County,“

Making Pork Production More Efficient Texas A&M AgriLife team aims to improve
the sustainability index of the pork industry
Research on optimizing the sustainability of the pork production is taking place at Texas A&M’s O. D. Butler, Jr. Animal Science Complex. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Laura McKenzie) Written by Kay Ledbetter Pigs eat crops, pigs leave nutrients in manure, manure is used to fertilize crops and pigs eat crops – it is a sustainable operation that puts pork on the table across the nation and worldwide. But the system can be improved. Better diets for the animals result in better nutrients. Increasing the precision in the process results in higher efficiencies. That’s the purpose of a new National Pork Board grant-funded project being conducted by a team from the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Animal Sciences. Jeff Wiegert, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service swine specialist and assistant professor, and Luis Tedeschi, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research ruminant nutritionist and Chancellor EDGES Fellow, will lead the project. Karun Kaniyamattam, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral research associate on computer modeling. Accounting for natural variation The primary objective of the work is to develop a sustainability index of the U.S. swine industry, Wiegert said. “By its nature, animal agriculture, and the swine industry in particular, is a sustainable operation,” he said. “Our intention is to optimize the sustainability of the swine industry by improving the precision of the process.” Wiegert explained that what’s being examined is the natural variation involved. The nutrient content of feedstuffs is influenced by regionspecific factors; the nutrient requirements of pigs are influenced by pig-specific factors; and the nutrient content of the manure is influenced by both feedstuff and pig factors. “The calculations
typically used to formulate diets and predict manure nutrient output utilize a simplistic model that assumes the caloric content of a given feedstuff is always X, the protein content of the feedstuff is always Y, and that those two can be added together to create a diet that meets the pig’s caloric requirements A and protein requirements B,” he said. This is deterministic modeling, Wiegert said, and most livestock are fed diets formulated through a deterministic model such as that developed by the National Resource Council in 2012. The system works pretty well because decades have been spent figuring out pig nutrient requirements, nutrient digestibility, and so on. However, variation creates problems. “Variables are never just X or Y, they are X plus or minus or Y plus or minus,” Wiegert said. “Same with the pig’s requirements. That inherent variation and uncertainty creates imprecision in the system that prevents feedstuffs from being utilized to their fullest value, prevents pigs from reaching their most efficient potential for performance, and manure nutrients from being accurately estimated.” Moving away from deterministic modeling is also necessary to account for random events and better understand which feeding practice is less risky, Tedeschi said. “We need to know which feeding practices have the highest probability of yielding a sustainable outcome,” he said. “Deterministic modeling is a great tool that allowed us to learn and develop decision support systems in the last 50 years. Still, we need to move on to new technologies that are more challenging but can help us with so many random events going on at the same time.” Building in efficiency,
sustainability The team intends to incorporate stochastic modeling into existing swine nutrition models to determine the impact of this natural variation in feed resource nutritional quality on swine growth performance, feed efficiency, carcass quality and manure nutrient composition. Stochastic modeling includes natural variation as an input to allow for the estimation of a range of probability outputs, Wiegert said. “This will allow us to determine the degree to which efficiency is ‘lost’ by not accounting for that variation,” he said. “Once this is completed, we’ll also complete a life cycle assessment of each step of resource utilization to gain a more holistic understanding of the sustainability of pork production in the U.S.” Wiegert said the results of this work will provide industry leaders and regulatory agencies a more complete understanding of the sustainability of the swine production. “We will also be able to develop a sustainability index through which pork producers may be able to gauge the performance of their own operations to drive continuous improvement in an important field,” he said. The team expects to provide actionable data at the end of the three-year grant.

The big wind last week was apparently more than a big wind. A friend of mine lost a large part of his roof. When I offered my support and help, he said, “I know why this happened.” His church has a bad roof. In a recent meeting they had voted not to replace the roof but to table the matter. He quoted to me Haggai 1:4, “Why are you living in luxurious houses while my house lies in ruins?” I told my friend that I did not think that is the way it works. “I do not think because you would not put a roof on the church, God just took yours!” He was unconvinced. He is replacing his roof but not before the church gets theirs. I do not think he wants my help with his theology. But he did say he was willing for me to help with the roof. Unfortunately, he will find out later I am a better theologian than a roofer. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

three goals throughout district play. Seven of the Lionettes 32-4A wins were all shutout victories including some big names such as Port Isabel, Jubilee aAcademy and IDEA Frontier. Now Heading into the 4A Region 4 State Playoffs, The Lionettes have a Bi-District Round date against the Raymondville Lady Bearkats. This would
be the second meeting between Raymondville and La Feria as both teams met in the Non-District Schedule. La Feria won that meeting in a dominant fashion by a score of 9-0. After suffering a first round loss in the postseason in 2021, The Lionettes have been determined to make a deep run in the 2022 State playoffs.

The Next Chapter Poem Ukrainian Folk Hymn
While on the sea, hear the terrible roaring! See how the boat of my life rolls with me; In fear of death and in deepest of anguish, Lord, hear my prayer, watch my soul on the sea. Save me, O merciful Father, forgive me; How as my life with its ending I see. My youthful strength has been spent in the battle; Lord now, I beg you, have mercy on me! I have no strength left to aid on my journey. Help me to reach that fair land past the sea; Help me to travel to my native country! Lord now, I beg you, have mercy on me.
