Manny Vela, Chief Executive Officer at Valley Baptist Medical Center and Board Member of Noble Texas Builders. “We’re here to recognize Noble Texas Builders and 5x5 Brewery for getting the goal of at least 10% of the workforce comprised of veterans” Vela late gives a speech with a warm welcoming to Noble’s CEO Rene Capistran, describing him as a leader who both leads with “head and heart”. Talking with Mr. Capistran he mentions

that he too wore the uniform, and says "I think we have a moral responsibility, to do our part…" Though they have over 10% veterans, Capistran says "We won't be happy until

we're over 20%, but you know what, it's a great start." Though the Cameron County Judge, Eddie Trevino was unable to attend due to a last-minute pressing matter. Commissioner

Joey Lopez spoke in place. Lopez applauded Noble for their accomplishments in building an allinclusive park at Cameron Park. Lopez says "Noble stepped up". Regarding this ceremony, La Feria Mayor, Olga Maldonado, says its always an honor for things like this to happen in La Feria. She says "I think we are very fortunate, very fortunate to have (Noble) here." Valley Cat Tomatoes Named Newest Texas Superstar Written by Adam Russell

Gardeners now have another tomato option that provides characteristics worthy of being named a Texas Superstar plant. Valley Cat tomatoes have been named a Texas Superstar for its resistance to nematodes and other diseases in addition to its heat tolerance and consistent season-long productivity of good, round, red fruit, said Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service horticulturist, Larry Stein, Ph.D., Uvalde. “It is a consistent performer,” Stein said. “Valley Cat doesn’t do well one year and then not so well the next year, and we like consistency around the state when it comes to Texas Superstar plants. So, this adds another edible option for our gardeners.” To be designated a Texas Superstar, a plant must perform well for growers throughout the state. Texas Superstars must also be easy to propagate, ensuring the plants are widely available and reasonably priced. Get to know Valley Cat tomatoes

Valley Cat tomatoes are a medium-sized determinate plant that produces tomatoes with outstanding fruit quality, Stein said. It is an early to medium maturity variety that ripens to an attractive red color with excellent and consistent interior qualities as well as an outer firmness. Tomatoes do continue to ripen after being picked and are typically harvested when they start to break, or change color, Stein said. “It’s most ideal to pick these tomatoes when they break because they will be as good in flavor as if they were left to ripen on the plant,” he said. “Removing them from the plant and allowing them to ripen on the kitchen counter reduces the chances of birds, insects or other critters attacking the fruit.” Valley Cat tomatoes are perennial plants but are grown as an annual in Texas due to cold weather. They are determinant plants but can easily reach 4-5 feet tall and need caging or staking for support, Stein said. These vigorous plants typically produce 20 or more very plump, robust tomatoes and produce fruit

throughout the growing season. Mature fruits weigh approximately 8 ounces and are typically about 4 inches across. Plants have resistance to three nematodes, including root knot. In addition, they are resistant to fusarium wilt, grey leaf spot and verticillium wilt, Stein said. Pest and disease resistance and tolerances provide gardeners with more options to grow tomatoes without worrying about certain plant-related problems. “Nematodes are becoming more abundant and becoming more of an issue for gardeners,” he said. “We think gardeners are buying plants and introducing them to their gardens and that they are increasingly showing up. So, resistant and tolerant plants are a big positive for gardeners.” Planting and care Valley Cat tomatoes can be planted in any soil that drains well. Full sun exposure is required for optimum fruit production, Stein said. Home gardening and commercial yields have been quite good across Texas due to the plant’s heat

tolerance. Stein said it is best to plant Valley Cat tomatoes in spring. They can be planted in mid-summer for fall harvest, though white flies and viruses can hinder production. Starter plants perform best when they are placed in larger containers to create a good root ball, Stein said. “We recommend taking 2-inch transplants and stepping them up to a gallon container to create a good root system,” he said. “It gets them off to a better start.” Stein also suggests

incorporating a 3-1-2 ratio fertilizer – three parts nitrogen, one part phosphorous and two parts potassium – into the soil at planting. Gardeners should then side-dress, or place fertilizer around the root system when plants show golf ball-sized fruit, though he warned against adding too much nitrogen as it can burn plants. Slow-release nitrogen can work as well. “Valley Cat joins Celebrity as a Texas Superstar tomato,” he said. “Ornamental plants have gotten much of the focus in the past but given the rise

in gardens and gardening across Texas, we felt it was important to highlight plants for food production and let people know they have some really good options out there.” Texas Superstar is a registered trademark owned by AgriLife Research, a state agency that is part of the Texas A&M University System. Plants are designated by the Texas Superstar executive board, which is made up of nine horticulturalists from AgriLife Research, AgriLife Extension and Texas Tech University.

TSC HVAC program introduces retiree to his second career

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (April 5, 2022) - Retired and ready for a fresh start, Omar Aguirre will be earning an associate degree in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) in December to begin his second career. For 18 years, the 46-year-old was an insurance broker and business owner in his hometown of Las Vegas, working more than 16 hours a day. “It was time for a change,” he said. “I wanted out of an office. I had the desire to do something different, work with my hands. That led to a big life decision and shift.”

Aguirre ended up selling his business and retiring from insurance, returning to his wife’s hometown of Brownsville in search of something new. “I have many friends who work in the trades, and they are all doing very well, so I thought why not me,” said Aguirre. “I did my research, found the in-demand fields and picked the one that piqued my interest the most – HVAC.” He added that his deciding factor in choosing HVAC is the security and stability it offers. “HVAC is needed and always will be needed, meaning technicians

will always be in demand,” said Aguirre. A different type of learning for a man who holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, HVAC has proved to be a new experience for Aguirre, one that he is wholeheartedly enjoying. “The hands-on learning has shaped my entire experience,” he said. “For someone new to the field, I feel prepared, and I know what to expect when I graduate.” In addition, Aguirre said his instructors have played a huge role in his newfound confidence and it’s their professional experience

and willingness to share knowledge that has been worthwhile. After graduating, Aguirre will need to work at least two years in the field before becoming a licensed HVAC technician, and he plans on using these two years to gain as much experience as possible because he has big plans for his new career. “I plan on opening another business, this time in HVAC. TSC made it easy for me to begin this next chapter,” said Aguirre. “I want to serve the Rio Grande Valley with its residential and commercial HVAC needs and

introduce new HVAC technologies.” For more information about TSC’s HVAC program, visit tsc.edu.

Registration for summer and fall 2022 begins April 1.

Omar Aguirre is a retired insurance broker and owner from Las Vegas, Nevada, who has found his second career in HVAC at TSC. He expects to graduate in December of this year.

Allergy Season Hits Rio Grande Valley Local Physician Offers Treatment Tips BROWNSVILLE & HARLINGEN – Blooming flowers, budding trees, and blustery winds are often the hallmarks of springtime in the Rio Grande Valley. But for many local residents, springtime means allergy season and all the annoying signs and symptoms that accompany nature’s beauty. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), more than 50 million Americans suffer a variety of allergies each year, with allergies coming in as the sixth leading cause of chronic illness in the United States.

During the spring, pollen generated by grasses, weeds, and other plants travels by wind and ultimately find their way into the eyes, noses, and lungs of local residents. For individuals who are allergic to these pollens, that exposure means the telltale symptoms, said Dr. John Austin, an ear, nose, and throat specialist with Valley Baptist Health System. “Common signs of allergies include runny nose, sniffles, sneezing, runny itchy eyes, and congestion in the ears,” he said. The signs and symptoms of allergies can often mimic those

of a viral or bacterial infection, albeit with a few differences, said Dr. John Austin, an ear, nose, and throat specialist with Valley Baptist Health System. “Typically, the initial discharge with allergies is not discolored, and allergies are infrequently associated with a temperature or fever,” he said. “Initially, allergies are not associated with a cough, and it’s uncommon to sneeze with a viral illness.” There is some good news for allergy sufferers, however. Allergy season typically does not last long, as mild spring

temperatures quickly make way for the sweltering heat of summer. The rising temperatures usually put the Valley’s blooming plants into survival mode, reducing the amount of pollen in the air. Austin also said that readily-available, over the counter medications normally do the trick and offer rapid relief for most allergy sufferers. “The best initial treatment includes an oral non-sedating antihistamine over the counter medication, such as Zyrtec, Allegra, or Claritin. A topical decongestant combined with a saline

nasal rinse can be effective in cleansing and moisturizing the nose. A mucolytic like guaifenesin will help thin the nasal mucus,” he said. “If there is pain associated with sinus pressure caused by allergies, over the counter pain medicine can be used. There are also specific over the counter antihistamine products that can be used for the nose, like Nasalcrom, and for the eyes, like Opticrom.” While pollen allergies rarely cause serious medical issues, there are times where a trip to the doctor may be necessary, especially if something more severe

has been mistaken for allergies. Another option that can only be offered by a medical provider is a short course of steroids, either orally or by injection, Austin said. “If a patient develops productive cough, significant facial or ear pain, a temperature, or discolored mucus, they should consider a trip to a doctor,” he said. “If they experience shortness of breath or continued elevated temperature, a trip to an urgent care facility may be required, where additional tests such as a chest X-ray and a blood test may reveal other health issues."

First Baptist Church, La Feria Sunday will be Easter. We have been celebrating Jesus’ resurrection for over 2000 years. Yet, people are still dying, a million have died, in this country alone, from COVID. Does the resurrection matter? I read somewhere, “We live as if we are never going to die and then we die having never really lived.” The power of Jesus’ resurrection is not just that he died and lived again, but that he truly lived. He did not just float through life waiting for the next party or the next wreck. He lived a life worth living again. “Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming “Wow! What a Ride!”Hunter Thompson Maybe the big question is not will the dead live again. But did they ever live at all? -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Plasma Donations Save Lives: You Can Help The Next Chapter Poem Springtime

Beautiful flowers in the shimmering sun. You just know that Spring has begun. The scenery in the garden is such a joy to see, with colorful flowers surrounded by all the bees. Watching the bees frolicking around from flower to flower. Before you know it, it’s been more than an hour. Amazed at the beautiful butterflies hovering all around I could watch them all day as I lounge around.

(StatePoint) Human plasma donations are used to produce life-saving medicines for people affected by serious and rare diseases around the world. Experts say that right now there is a critical need for plasma donations. “Plasma donors do the amazing. They make a direct impact on the lives of patients affected by rare and serious diseases. We strongly encourage those who meet the requirements, and are otherwise eligible, to donate plasma,” says Dr. Jennifer Hanes, who as a division medical director of CSL Plasma, is responsible for the medical oversight of U.S. plasma donation centers. Dr. Hanes is sharing five important things to know about plasma donation: 1. What is plasma? Plasma is a straw-colored liquid that carries red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, helping to maintain a steady level of blood pressure, supporting the immune system and delivering critical nutrients to cells. 2. What is plasma used for? Plasma is

used to treat rare and serious conditions, often by replacing crucial proteins a patient lacks. These conditions include primary immunodeficiencies, hereditary angioedema, inherited respiratory disease, hemophilia and other bleeding or neurological disorders. Every year, it takes more than 1,200 plasma donations to treat one person living with hemophilia, more than 900 plasma donations to treat one person living with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (Alpha-1) and more than 130 plasma donations to treat one person living with a primary immune deficiency. Additionally, albumin, a protein contained in our plasma, is used in hospitals and urgent and emergency care settings to treat trauma, shock, burns and other emergencies that could happen to anyone. 3. Who can donate plasma? To donate at a CSL Plasma center, you must be in good health, be between the ages of 18-74, weigh at least 110

pounds, have had no tattoos or piercings within the last four months, meet health and screening requirements and have valid identification with a permanent address. 4. What is the donation process like? While a first-time plasma donation takes approximately two hours, and up to three hours at times, the second donation is typically shorter. CSL Plasma donors will be rewarded for helping to create life-saving medicines and will receive a payment in connection with the donation process. It’s recommended that donors drink four to six 8-ounce glasses of water, fruit juice or other caffeine-free liquid at least two to three
