Emilio Flores La Feria News On April 14th, students from computer science engineering and Architecture students had the opportunity to attend a field trip to SpaceX, and receive a personal tour. Abigail Rodriguez, the computer science teacher, tells La Feria News that she reached out to the engineering and architecture teacher, George Cordero to include students from his classes to be part of this SpaceX tour. In total Mrs. Rodriguez says they had 27 students attend the field trip, with students from Stem aswell

as the Gear-up program. Abigail Rodriguez, says that something SpaceX had mentioned to the students was the need for more coders. Coding is an enormous part of getting a spacecraft off the ground and they need more manpower in that sense. Mrs. Rodriguez expresses what a great privilege it was to have students from the school experience and see up close these massive spacecraft. Just last week, La Feria News’ Twitter retweeted about SpaceX’s Raptor 2 engine quoting some of the newest updates saying, “SpaceX says that ‘Raptor 2 generates more than 230 tons of thrust at

Rodriguez says SpaceX explained to the students during the tour. She was also kind enough to send in some quotes from the students themselves last minute to hear what it was like to experience this awesome opportunity. Daniel Aranda - What did you find the most interesting? "The rockets and the towers that help assemble them. The towers are quite tall, housing the rocket as it is put together with cranes." What would you tell other students who would be interested in visiting SpaceX? "Go on this field trip and look at what the company has to offer. You won't be disappointed, especially if you enjoy computer science. They even said it themselves at the facility: they don't have enough computer science people and need more." 2. Ashlyn Garza - Did this trip help increase your interest in computer science? - "It did. It helps put into perspective that computer science isn't just making a website or animations. People are able to build entire rockets with the help of computer science." 3. Andrew Diaz - What was your overall experience of the trip to SpaceX? "It was a very eye-opening experience, being able to witness the evolutions humanity strives to make every day really made me interested in what they do at SpaceX."

sea level,’ And Musk hopes to increase that by the end of the year to 250 tons of thrust!” SpaceX told students about three major projects that the team is working towards. The first project is one that we’ve started to see in the works already in small areas, and that is Starlink.

Starlink, for those that don't know, is a "highspeed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable or completely unavailable" It’s high-speed satellite internet. Cameron County Released back at the beginning of March that Starlink internet services will be available in select areas. On March 4th, the integration of Starlink internet services, according to the release, will be available at Pedro “Pete” Benavides County Park, the Bob Clark Social Service Center, and the Public Works Warehouse in Cameron County. And access will only become more and more available to the rest of the Valley. Another project they are working on going back to the moon! According to an article put out by Space.com published by By Mike Wall early this year, in January, Wall says “Elon Musk's company is providing the landing system for the first crewed touchdown of NASA's Artemis lunar exploration program, a milestone that the agency hopes to achieve in 2025.” The billionaire has big plans for his company, but just as those infamous long commercials say, wait, there’s more. However absurd it may sound, Elon Musk also plans to colonize mars! Some reports say as early as 2029. These are just some of the many things Mrs.

Start Looking Out For Stinging Caterpillar

Texas A&M AgriLife experts warn contact can cause rash, painful reaction

Saddleback caterpillar. (Photo by Jerry A Payne, USDA Agricultural Research Service, Bugwood.org.) Written by Susan Himes As the weather warms up and people begin spending more time in their yards, parks and forests, more people will have the opportunity to encounter insects, some of which can bite or sting. However, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service experts say before you blame a flying insect or a poisonous plant for a skin ailment, you may need to consider another culprit –

“stinging” caterpillars. “Spring foliage can bring on an abundance of caterpillars, a few of whom carry irritating or even venomous hairs that ‘sting’,” said Janet Hurley, AgriLife Extension statewide integrated pest management specialist for schools, Dallas. “We have fact sheets available for schools this time of year, and we want to make sure parents are aware that there are stinging caterpillars in

Texas, what they look like, and how to avoid them,” she said. Stinging caterpillar species include the buck moth caterpillar, spiny oak slug caterpillar, hickory tussock moth caterpillar, saddleback caterpillar and io moth caterpillar. Perhaps the most painful caterpillar in Texas is the southern flannel moth caterpillar, also known as the asp or puss caterpillar. An encounter with a puss caterpillar is very painful and may even require a trip to the hospital, according to AgriLife Extension experts. What stinging caterpillars look like Hurley said that just about every species of stinging caterpillar has now been spotted in Texas. “A good rule of thumb is if a caterpillar looks ‘fuzzy’ — don’t touch it,” said Molly Keck, AgriLife Extension entomologist and integrated pest management specialist, Bexar County. Although many fuzzy caterpillars are not dangerous, do not pick up a caterpillar unless you are sure it is not of the stinging variety. The puss caterpillar, for example, looks deceptively soft and can be especially tempting for children to want to pick up or “pet” them.

“These teardropshaped caterpillars look touchable, but they are not,” emphasized Wizzie Brown, AgriLife Extension specialist in integrated pest management for Travis County. “Asps have spines attached to venom glands that can lead to a nasty sting, rash and other issues.”

Caterpillar sting symptoms and treatment “Since these caterpillars tend to hide, you may not even know you’ve encountered one until you feel the sting,” Hurley said. If you are stung, you may feel immediate pain and reddish colored spots may appear where spines entered the skin. Some people may not feel pain until several minutes after they are stung, while others can experience intense throbbing or radiating pain. Other people may not feel much discomfort, and a red rash may be the only telltale sign. Brown said people respond to caterpillar toxin differently. “Some people may have a more severe reaction than others, and where on your body you are stung and the thickness of that skin can affect your reaction too,” she said. If the caterpillar is still on you, immediately brush

it off if possible, and then use tape to remove the spines that may still be in your skin, Brown said. Washing the area with soap and water and applying an ice pack to the sting may offer some relief, and an oral antihistamine may help to relieve itching. Over-the-counter insect sting and bite relief products can also help. The pain often goes away within an hour. Other symptoms after a sting can include nausea, vomiting, headaches,

respiratory stress or shock. Since reactions to the toxins from stinging caterpillars can vary, seek medical advice or treatment immediately or go to an emergency room if you become concerned. Any contact with eyes or an allergic reaction to a sting warrants immediate medical attention. Stinging caterpillar habitat “You are more likely

TSC Digital Library

Offers students new opportunity to learn and grow

At TSC’s Digital Library students can find resources such as eBooks, electronic articles and journals needed to complete research, assignments and essays. BROWNSVILLE, Texas (April 18, 2022) Texas Southmost College recently introduced the college’s first Digital Library, and for TSC students like Irlanda Moreno, having this service has made completing assignments and essays more ► Stinging Caterpillar CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 to encounter stinging caterpillars when they leave their host plant in search of a spot to pupate, ,” said Keck. “They aren’t aggressive and won’t come after you, but they can drop from trees.” Keck said she hasn’t yet seen any caterpillars but that once we start having warmer days we may see more. She said this year’s drier weather may also play a role in their numbers. “Insect populations are also often cyclical, and this may just be a year we don’t see them as prevalently,” Keck said. Texans statewide should be on the alert and keep an eye on trees and shrubs for caterpillar development, which typically occurs now into the fall. Some common tree hosts are apple, basswood, cherry, dogwood, elm,

convenient. “Having information and resources at my fingertips and being able to access it even if I’m not on campus helps so much,” said the 19-yearold. “This is especially going to come in handy as I prepare to apply to the Radiologic Technology

maple, plum and oak, which is a favorite of the buck moth caterpillar. Some stinging caterpillars may even be found on crops such as corn. The AgriLife Extension experts explained that southern flannel moths, the adult stage of puss caterpillars, emerge in late spring or early summer to lay several hundred eggs on favored host trees. Caterpillars may also be seen feeding on dwarf yaupon and other shrubs. One to two generations occur each year, though puss caterpillars tend to be more common in the fall. Pest management Avoid stinging caterpillars by not sitting under trees and wearing long sleeves and pants outdoors, although even that is no guarantee of

program. The way I see it, TSC’s Digital Library is another way the college is helping us succeed.” The idea for TSC’s Digital Library, located at the SET B Annex, room 1.536, was first introduced in 2019 to give TSC and its students its own library and resources, since this service was originally being shared with a local university. “TSC needed its own in-house library for students and faculty,” said TSC Librarian Nancy Bond. “So, my goal since day one has been to create a center that met that need.” Any TSC student, by simply logging in with their TSC credentials, can

access the Digital Library and everything it has to offer. Students can find resources such as eBooks, electronic articles and journals needed to complete research, assignments and essays. Bond said since the Digital Library’s official kickoff last month, it has been popular with students. “This service is crucial to our student and faculty success,” she said. “We have faculty sending students over and students recommending it to their friends. This is changing the way our students learn and the way our instructors teach. It really has had a positive

Puss caterpillar. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Wizzie Brown) protection. “I had the misfortune of getting an eastern buck moth caterpillar on my pants once and accidentally brought it inside,” said Keck. “When I rested my hand on my leg, I encountered the barbs, and it didn’t feel good. It itched and left an uncomfortable feeling on my thumb for a couple hours.” Keck said there isn’t much you can do about managing these caterpillars

until they all pupate and go away. You don’t need to worry about harm to your garden however, as stinging caterpillars typically do not do enough feeding to harm plants. If you have large populations of stinging caterpillars and decide you need to try to manage them, you can try Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, Btk. However, this will also kill all the non-stinging

impact.” TSC’s Digital Library space has been fully redesigned to provide students with individual and group, noise reduction study rooms; a multipurpose room that can be used for class or large meetings; at least 60-70 computers; printers and charging stations. Soon, TSC students will be able to check out laptops using a new kiosk located at the Digital Library center. The kiosk will provide up to 24 laptops that can be borrowed for up to 48 hours to complete assignments, quizzes and tests or projects. “Our goal is to continue expanding and growing

the services that our Digital Library offers,” said Bond. “We’ll be working on including resources specific to programs we offer and that will continue to help our students learn and grow.” Bond encourages anyone who has not visited the Digital Library to stop by. She said there is something for everyone. While the Digital Library online service is available 24 hours a day at tsc.edu/library and the Digital Library center is open Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about TSC’s Digital Library, call 956-2953452.

You may also look for a pesticide with active ingredients such as spinosad or azadirachtin, which are naturally derived products. Puss moth caterpillars can also be controlled when they become abundant by spraying with a residual pesticide such as permethrin, cyfluthrin or similar sprays labeled for

control of caterpillars on ornamental plants. “We want Texans to know what these caterpillars look like and the importance of not touching them with bare hands,” said Hurley. “Looks can be deceiving and the best way to stay safe is to not handle anything you aren’t familiar with.”

First Baptist Church, La Feria Last week, my wife and I returned from a mission trip to Portugal. There, we joined a team of 15 volunteers working with the Fuller Center for Housing. We began renovating an old workshop to become 6 apartments. Those apartments will be homes for 6 families. 4 of which are refugee families. The trip home was almost exactly 24 hours long. Most of that time was in airports or public transit. Which means we wore masks. What a relief it was to remove those masks. Some in the nation are relieved that a federal judge has struck down the mask mandate on public transportation. Others are not celebrating the fact that more people will be traveling without masks. Some who opposed the mandate questioned the effectiveness of the masks. Admittedly, masks and the way they were worn was not consistent. However, others questioned even the existence of a virus. My wife and I were glad to be home, and to have a negative COVID test when we arrived home. Two members of our team were not so fortunate. When they arrived home, they tested positive with symptoms. Now they are quarantined. I am not going to tell them they have a nonexistent virus. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

The Next Chapter Poem Mothers Love

A Mother’s love is something you can’t explain From the first day you are born it will never be the same. From your first cry a mother’s joy will be immense. And she knows she can do it all with confidence. She knows she’ll always be there for you, and that’s no surprise. She’s like a guardian angel in disguise. She will nurture you up until you can be on your own. But even then, you will never be alone, because a mother’s love will always feel like home.

Valley Baptist Abuse Response Team Serving as Advocate for Valley’s Vulnerable CAMERON COUNTY – The month of April serves as Child Abuse Prevention Month, and there is a dire need of increased awareness for the victims of abuse who suffer throughout the community. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, nearly one in seven children in the United States suffered some form of abuse and/or neglect in the last year. Such instances of abuse can have long-lasting impacts, as studies have shown that adult survivors of childhood abuse are more likely to experience mental health difficulties, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders,

and substance use disorders. For victims of child abuse, the road to healing and justice can be a difficult one to travel, but Valley Baptist Health System is ensuring that some of the most vulnerable in the Rio Grande Valley do not have to travel that road alone. Through its comprehensive medical forensic program, the Child to Adult Abuse Response Team (CAART) at Valley Baptist-Harlingen provides around-the-clock critical services to both child and adult victims of abuse, neglect, and sexual assault. Offering services since 2006, the abuse response team provides care to more than 100 patients each month, in addition to

working with partners and advocates throughout the community and testifying in legal court cases involving abuse. As part of the services offered by the abuse response team, specially trained sexual assault nurse examiners who are also skilled as forensic nurses care for patients in a calming and secure treatment room designed specifically for victims of abuse, where doctors and nurses can provide medical care to the community’s most vulnerable. Sonja Eddleman is a certified sexual assault nurse examiner to provide medical forensic examinations for all ages of patients by the International Association of Forensic Nurses. She serves as the clinical

coordinator of the Child Abuse Resource and Evaluation (CARE) Team at Driscoll Children’s Hospital and is the Child to Adult Abuse Response Team (CAART) clinical director for Valley Baptist Health System. She said the abuse response team is an important tool in caring for patients, helping them recover, and ultimately find justice. “When patients come to the hospital, they expect that their medical needs will be met including: a comprehensive medical history, injuries documented and treated, testing and treatment for pertinent diseases, collection of items that have potential evidentiary value and providing resources for the next steps along the path,” she

said. “The forensic nurses on the Child to Adult Abuse Response Team along with other medical team members provide comprehensive services wrapped in compassion. The compassionate services provided are instrumental in helping the patient with the next steps of the investigation and the potential for the case to go to court.” The services provided by Valley Baptist are vital to the physical and emotional wellbeing of the victims – children, women, and men who are often shrouded in social stigma, Eddleman said. “Valley Baptist has established community relationships with law enforcement and local nonprofits to connect our patients with the resources

they need to be safe after discharge,” she said. “We are committed to providing quality, aroundthe-clock, compassionate care to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in our communities, and to supporting all efforts to reduce further violence.” While Valley Baptist Health System remains committed to caring for and protecting all victims of abuse, Eddleman said it is critical for the community to do its part to help curb the impacts of abuse. “Protect, listen, love, praise, and respect all children. Be a child’s sunshine. If you see, hear, or have concerns that a child is being abused, whether it be sexually, physically, or neglected, speak up!” Eddleman said.

Morgan LaMantia on Healthcare: “I’m Morgan LaMantia and like you, I believe healthcare should be affordable and available to everyone here in South Texas.”

If the pandemic has shown us anything it is that disease respects no borders or social classes. And, it has shown us that diseases like diabetes, obesity and other health-related problems only make our residents more vulnerable. I am highly encouraged to see that many of our cities and towns are already investing in wellness programs and providing opportunities for people to exercise and develop healthy lifestyles. Coupled with education, we can address the causes of some of the factors that produce bad health habits and illness.

I will work to expand health services for uninsured working families, support the health of new mothers, and provide more educational opportunities to encourage young people to pursue careers in front line healthcare. It is unacceptable to me that our residents in South Texas aren’t afforded the same access to healthcare as are all other parts of the state. I believe in a healthier future for all of us here in South Texas. I believe we are Stronger Together.
