(HARLINGEN, Texas) - With the SkillsUSA state competition scheduled for April in Houston, pride and commitment set the foundation for many Texas State Technical College students who are preparing for it. TSTC student Jeffrey King, of La Feria, will represent the college in aviation maintenance while also supporting some of his classmates who will compete in the same area. “I have been preparing for generalized skills,” he said. “Some of those include the timing of the aircraft ignition system. Then there are the different types of engines and the types of aircraft propellers, such as fixed pitch and ground adjustable.” ÿ King earned an Associate Jeffrey King, a TSTC Aircraft Powerplant Technology of Applied Science degree student, reassembles an aircraft injection carburetor while in Aircraft Airframe practicing for the upcoming SkillsUSA state competition. Now he is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Aircraft Powerplant Technology. “My perspective of the SkillsUSA state competition is similar to a client who is requesting their airplane’s engine to be fixed,” he said. “I have to figure out how to get the engine performing again.” Leo Guajardo, a TSTC aviation maintenance instructor in Harlingen, said he is glad to have King represent his program at the SkillsUSA competition. “The aviation program has SkillsUSA expectations built in, and my expectations are high,” he said. “Jeff is always positive and possesses a ‘make it happen’ attitude. I know he will do great.” Anyssa Huerta, of

Harlingen, will represent TSTC in masonry at the SkillsUSA state competition. “I placed in the top three in masonry at the SkillsUSA competition for Harlingen High School,” she said. “Through that achievement I earned a $1,000 scholarship. Now I am expanding my knowledge in masonry and other areas in TSTC’s Building Construction Technology. The SkillsUSA competition is a large platform, and I am looking forward to networking.” Huerta is pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Building Construction Technology at TSTC’s Harlingen campus. The second-semester student added that she enjoys the program because it is an engaging learning experience. “I observe every detail of my work, and I receive great insight from my instructors,” she said. “It is a great feeling to know I built something with my own two hands. This is also why I am looking forward to the competition.” Rick Vargas, a TSTC Building Construction Technology instructor in Harlingen, noted that Huerta has been an exceptional student from the beginning. “Her experience in the high school masonry class showed her a specialized skill in construction,” he said. “This was very helpful for her to transition to our program. She will represent us well in the SkillsUSA state competition.” To learn more about TSTC, visit tstc.edu.

2022 State of the Port Address
Continued Progress at the Port of Brownsville Provides Positive Outlook for the RGV Economy
Brownsville Navigation District Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez delivers his remarks during the 2022 State of the Port Address held March 24, 2022, at the Rancho Viejo Convention Center in Rancho Viejo, TX. BROWNSVILLE, Texas – March 24, 2022 —The Port of Brownsville remains a stronghold for the Rio Grande Valley’s economy providing record-setting tonnage and robust operating revenues for FY 2021. Brownsville Navigation District Board Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez highlighted these achievements at the 2022 State of the Port Address held today at the Rancho
Viejo Convention Center in Rancho Viejo, TX. The unaudited operating revenues for FY 2021 surpassed the $30 million mark for the second consecutive year at $34 million, while cargo tonnage amounted to 13.8 million tons, breaking a previous record of 11.6 million in 2020. “The Port of Brownsville remains strong and focused on its mission. We have not
only remained open for business, but we have also grown,” said Lopez. “As vessels continue to bring more cargo, more jobs are created and sustained. We continue to invest in the port to attract new industries and support economic stability to ensure good-paying jobs.” Dr. M. Ray Perryman, economist, President and CEO of the Perryman Group, was the keynote speaker at the event attended by port stakeholders, members of the business community and local leadership. Dr. Perryman provided an economic forecast for the Port of Brownsville and the Rio Grande Valley. For the ninth consecutive year, the port’s Foreign Trade Zone No. 62 ranked in the top three out of 193 FTZs in the nation for the value of exports, according to the U.S. Foreign Trade Zones Board’s Annual Report to Congress. Additionally, FTZ No. 62 ranked 21st nationally for the value of imports totaling more than
$3 billion. This increased activity at the port across its diverse businesses tested its logistical capabilities and provided favorable results. Multimodal services at the port provided the smooth transportation of commodities to service a wide range of industries in the U.S. and Mexico. Vessel traffic through the Brownsville Ship Channel increased by 11 percent. Throughout 2020, 1,671 vessels called on the port, and in 2021 that number increased to 1,855. The Brownsville and Rio Grande International Railroad, operated by OmniTRAX, ended 2021 with an all-time high of 65,865 loaded railcars handled, a 22 percent increase from 2020. Throughout 2021, the port registered 438,000 truck movements representing an average of 1,200 truck movements per day. Among the industries at the port, wind energy components remain a mainstay, as moving nacelles, hubs, tower
sections and the world’s longest windmill blades continue their route through the port to their destination. The evergrowing steel sector at the port registered a record of 4.3 million tons of steel products moved while petroleum-based commodities represented nearly 50 percent of the total cargo moved with 6.3 million tons. Ship recycling activities continued with All Star Metals, International Shipbreaking Ltd., and SteelCoast, the nation’s leading ship recyclers, securing a steady stream of contracts from the U.S. government and the private sector. In 2021, ISL was awarded a contract from the U.S. Navy to recycle the USS Kitty Hawk and the USS John F. Kennedy, representing the fourth and fifth aircraft carriers to be recycled by the company. The USS Kitty Hawk is currently en route to the Port of Brownsville and is expected to arrive in May.
In early March, the Port of Brownsville held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the South Port Connector Road, the Rio Grande Valley’s newest international trade route. “The increasing activity at the port has demonstrated that the Port of Brownsville is the economic engine for the Rio Grande Valley. In the last 8 years, we’ve invested more than $100 million in the construction and rehabilitation of docks, port facilities and equipment, utility infrastructure, roads, patios, and laydown yards,” said Lopez. “These improvements have been exclusively funded using port revenues, and not at the expense of the taxpayer.” Growth continues at the port with a major terminal development for the efficient loading of open-top gondola railcars for steel slab shipments to Mexico and the expansion of liquid storage capacity, currently at 6.9 million barrels.

First Baptist Church, La Feria There was a boy who wanted a car. “Cut your hair, first,” said his father. “Jesus had long hair,” said the boy.” “Jesus walked everywhere he went,” said the father. The Gospels do not mention the length of Jesus’ hair. They do suggest that he walked everywhere. Except once, the week of his crucifixion Jesus rode into Jerusalem. He was not tired. The journey was not long. We call it his triumphal entry. But it was hardly triumphal. He rode a small donkey. Not a very stately sight. No red carpet, only Palm leaves. The crowd was a big disappointment crying out “Save us.” A few days later. “Crucify him.” We still clamor for leaders who constantly remind us how brilliant and powerful they are. We cheer at their pompous selfpromoting parades. While true greatness passes by unnoticed, on a donkey. -Mark S. Ross DMin.

Queens of the Jungle! THSPA State Meet By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News
The La Feria Lionettes Softball team continues to be on a tear throughout the 2022 Texas High School Softball Season. Great Pitching, Solid Hitting and Stellar Defense has propelled La Feria to the number one seed of District 32-4A, After going 12-10 during a grueling Non-District schedule that has seen La Feria battle with Valley Powerhouses such as Weslaco East, Harlingen South and San Benito, A tough non-district has always been scheduled to prepare a team for District Play and a possible playoff appearance, and for the Lionettes, it certainly
has done its job. La Feria currently sits on top of District 32-4A with a stellar 5-0 record. The Lionettes have had their fare share of competition in the past from teams as Rio Hondo, Port Isabel and Raymondville, But La Feria has taken on challengers of all kind and have shown that they can tangle with some of the Valley’s Best and still remain as the number one seed in District 32-4A, Some of the Lionettes Biggest wins have been 15-4 over Rio Hondo in the 32-4A opener on March 8, and a huge 15-4 win over Raymondville on March 11. La Feria then defeated Grulla 17-1 on March 22 and then Hidalgo 19-8 on
March 25. La Feria then faced off against a tough Port Isabel Lady Tarpons in a close one 4-2 on March 29 to remain perfect through the first half of district play. So what lies in store for the Lionettes in the second half? La Feria will kick off round two of district play against Rio Hondo on April 1. The Lionettes will then face off against Raymondville on April 8 then go against Grulla April 12. The Lionettes will travel to Hidalgo on April 15 then take on Port Isabel in the Regular Season Finale on April 19. The Lionettes are on track to capturing a potential District Title and look to make a deep playoff push in 2022.

Reaping
When darkness deepens on darkest nights, And makes us yearn for day, When fears and cares and doubts arise, We can bow our heads and pray. There is a living, loving Light, That can guide us on our way. He is the Son of God above. We should so love to cultivate, For anger sowed just brings forth hate. It is the truth that we should know, For what we reap is what we sow. For a much better world, A better world so far, Be like the Wise Men And follow His star. by: James E. Arnold
