Emilio Flores La Feria News Mark Twain once said, “I never let my schooling interfere with my education.” Education should not only happen in the classroom. It isn’t through force that you get a child to enjoy learning. Fostering what a child is curious about amounts more than almost anything, because threw curiosity you find research and questioning. In questioning, you get the dying urge to grasp a hold of the why and once you’ve found it, all you want to do is share

about it. La Feria’s Bailey H. Dunlap Memorial Library is one place to find out those questions. They have a wide variety of selections, from Fiction to Non-fiction, to classics, tons of romance, a bilingual section, History of the Nation, and Texas & Mexico. They also have newer releases and DVDs you can rent. Now that Summer is just around the corner, Lori Vogt, the Head Librarian, encourages the community to just come out and enjoy the library. Currently, the hours are from Noon to 6PM, Vogt says that as of

now those hours won’t be changing but says “not to say they won’t, here in the future.” With the Pandemic and other problems arising the library had been closed for 13 months. Lori Vogt, says “We closed in Marcharound the middle of March 2020," and says that they opened back up April, of last year. What started off as just a few weeks, quickly became Months.

Mrs. Vogt has been in love with reading since she was very young and says that she remembers visiting the library as a little girl all the time. “The existing building..” Vogt explains “has been here since 1963.” Though she admits it was much smaller as it was a single room, it has some great sentimental value in the town of La Feria. Originally, the library was only a small shop in downtown La Feria. Lori Vogt herself has worked at the library for 23 years. Growing up she loved the library, and now Vogt is here to share the same passion she had as a young child being enriched by the stories she read. She says what really makes the La Feria Library special is its small-town feel to it. Vogt offers to proctor for students as well, which she expresses, “There’s not that many

people that will do that for them anymore” Test proctoring is testing overseen by an authorized, neutral, proctor, who ensures the identity of the test taker and the integrity of the test-taking environment. Larger libraries don’t have the resources, whereas the La Feria library still offers those services, along with computer access as well as printing and scanning capabilities, and event space upstairs for meetings or special presentations. Vogt just asks that you request in advance, the library is happy to accept Book and DVD donations, with the exception of college material. Stop by the Library and find out how you can be a part or start a club! Bailey H. Dunlap Library in La Feria is here to serve the community in what they need.

Nursing Professor Earned Her Fifth College Degree At 87

Dr. Eloisa G.Tamez, 87, a UTRGV professor of nursing has earned four degrees in her lifetime, and on Friday, May 13, she will accept her fifth degree, a master’s in criminal justice at the UTRGV Spring Commencement in Brownsville. (UTRGV Photo by David Pike)

By Letty Fernandez RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – MAY 9, 2022 – Dr. Eloisa G.Tamez proves you are never too old to learn. At 87 years of age, she remains passionate about learning, and just as passionate about sharing that love of learning with students. The UTRGV professor of nursing has earned four degrees in her lifetime, and she isn’t done yet. On May 13,

at the UTRGV Spring Commencement in Brownsville, she will walk across the stage to accept her fifth degree, a master’s in criminal justice. She said she definitely will be at the commencement ceremony. “Absolutely! It’s going to be a big celebration,” she said. “My family is coming, and they are coming from everywhere.” It was during the early days of the pandemic

that Tamez decided to get another degree. She was at home, like most of the world, attending meetings and teaching classes remotely, when she saw an email that UTRGV was offering an online accelerated master’s program in criminal justice. She always had been interested in law and policy, so she applied. Classes started in summer 2020, and Tamez took one course each semester. “I did it because I

could,” she said. “And I wanted to learn more. My world opened up and it has been a great journey. I am 87, some of my students were 21. They could be my greatgrandchildren.” Her classmates were respectful and delightful, she said. The last time Tamez was a college student was 37 years ago. That was back in 1985, when she was pursuing a doctorate in nursing at UT Austin. Looking back on these past two years as a student again, she said, writing essays and term papers were easy but she had to get used to taking timed exams. “I had not had that kind of a test in a long time. I would sit down and pray the rosary before I opened the test. It was a challenge,” she admitted. “But I made it.” LOVE OF LEARNING Tamez was a firstgeneration college graduate, and she credits her parents for her success. “Both of my parents

had a sixth-grade education. They always promoted education to my sister and myself. My sister was an elementary school teacher for 35 years and I became a nurse,” she said. Tamez spent 44 years working in service, the past 27 years with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as a nurse and in executive management. In 2000, she joined legacy institution UTPA and then moved to UT Brownsville in 2004. She continues to teach future nurses. When she sees students in her classes who get discouraged, she shares this story with them: She was just starting the doctoral program when her husband, Luis, was in a car accident. He was in the hospital for months. She could have given up, she says, but knew that just wasn’t an option. “I had five children to take care of,” Tamez recalled. “My husband was in the hospital. We had one salary. So, I had to get the best education I could. “ “I tell my students

not to give up because this degree will make a difference in their lives,” she said. “In my own way, I am an example. I was in the same boat. Many times, I could have given up, but I did not.”

RETIREMENT Ask Tamez what her secret to life is, and she really isn’t sure. She loves reading, for one thing. As a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Army and the National Guard, she learned to stay fit and healthy. And, she believes learning is a forever thing. What about retirement, though? Her children often ask about that, she said. “I always tell them – next year. And the next year comes around and I haven’t retired,” she said. “I feel that I have a lot of positive energy to be able to keep our students engaged and to motivate them,” she said. “As long as I am physically and mentally capable of doing it, I will continue to teach. So, I don’t know if I will retire anytime soon.”

Valley Baptist Health System Utilizing Artificial Intelligence in Stroke Treatment BROWNSVILLE & HARLINGEN – From self-driving cars to millions of web searches every day, artificial intelligence is used in countless applications in everyday life. In 2018, Valley Baptist Health System was the first system in the Rio Grande Valley to bring the power of a specific type of artificial intelligence to stroke care, and the system has continued to make upgrades to its artificial intelligence capabilities to improve stroke treatment in the region. The artificial intelligence, developed by Viz.ai, has been in use at Valley Baptist since November of 2018, said Dr. Ameer Hassan, DO, FAHA, FSVIN, head of the neuroscience department, director of endovascular surgical neuroradiology and director of clinical neuroscience research at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen. “Artificial intelligence feels like it is two steps ahead of the game and has really played an important role in triaging some of the most complicated strokes we care for at Valley Baptist,” he said. When a patient who is suspected of having a stroke arrives at Valley Baptist, within minutes they receive a battery of tests to determine the severity of any potential stroke. These tests include a full array of images taken

of the patient’s brain as well as the blood vessels leading to the brain. Some patients also receive CT perfusion imaging, which shows physicians detailed information on blood flow being received by different areas of the brain and which parts are potentially salvageable during treatment. The artificial intelligence is used to analyze these imaging results, alerting physicians and healthcare providers when it discovers abnormalities, which in turn significantly improves treatment times through earlier diagnosis, Hassan said. “The artificial intelligence system analyzes the CT angiogram for a large vessel occlusion, then pushes an alert to all team members’ phones when it detects one,” Hassan said. “The use of artificial intelligence has improved our treatment times, and we all know that time is brain in relation to dealing with stroke, because 1.9 million neurons die every minute a stroke is untreated.” Large vessel occlusions are strokes that are caused by a blockage of one of the major arteries of the brain. These strokes make up approximately 20 percent of all strokes, Hassan said, but carry with them a higher risk of long-term disability or death than other types of stroke. “The goal is to use tools like artificial intelligence

to send more of our stroke patients home with fewer deficits than ever before,” Hassan said. Recent studies presented at the American Heart Association’s 2021 International Stroke Conference showed that the use of artificial intelligence in the treatment of large vessel occlusions had a number of benefits for patients, including reduced transfer times and more rapid treatment, which could in turn lead to shorter hospital stays and ultimately better outcomes, Hassan said. “Our studies show that the incorporation of artificial intelligence to coordinate care for ischemic stroke patients is associated with significant time savings across a hub and spoke model and also at comprehensive stroke centers,” said Hassan. “Because we know that ‘time is brain,’ these improvements could lead

to significant advances in functional outcomes, reduced mortality and shorter hospital stays.” Because large vessel occlusions, while extremely dangerous, do not make up the majority of strokes, Valley Baptist upgraded its artificial intelligence capabilities to allow physicians to harness its power to treat a wider array of stroke patients, including those with suspected intracerebral hemorrhaging. Intracerebral hemorrhaging is the most common type of hemorrhagic stroke, and occurs when an artery in the brain bursts, flooding the surrounding tissue with blood. The build-up of blood puts increased pressure on surrounding brain cells and can lead to long-term disability and death. Artificial intelligence can now detect these brain bleeds in a patient’s imaging and alert

stroke teams at Valley Baptist to take immediate action. Dr. Luis Gaitan, Medical Director of the Stroke Program at Valley Baptist Medical CenterBrownsville, said the use of artificial intelligence in the treatment of stroke helps physicians better coordinate patient care when quick decisions are a critical component of positive outcomes. “The use of artificial intelligence at Valley Baptist-Brownsville allows neurologists to make rapid decisions related to a patient’s treatment,” he said. “Patients suspected of having a stroke receive imaging upon their arrival to the hospital, and neurologists are able to see those scans immediately on their phones or computers. The artificial intelligence will alert neurologists to take immediate action when it detects a large vessel occlusion in those

images, which is so important because when dealing with stroke, time is brain.” The use of artificial intelligence is the just the latest advancement in Valley Baptist Health System’s quest to provide the community with high-quality stroke care. Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen became the region’s first certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in 2016. In addition to participating in the DAWN study, Valley Baptist also played a role in the SWIFT PRIME trials, which proved the benefits of endovascular treatment of stroke. Valley BaptistBrownsville and Valley Baptist-Harlingen are also recipients of the American Heart Association/ American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.

First Baptist Church, La Feria Last Sunday night, Linda dragged me out of bed and into the front yard. People passing by saw two crazy old people standing outside, in their pajamas, in the middle of the night, staring into the sky. If someone had stopped, we would have pointed to the blood red moon. It was a full lunar eclipse. Linda explained to me, “The earth is perfectly between the sun and the moon. The red color is the light of the sun refracted through the atmosphere onto the moon.” Makes sense. Only later did I find out that some of the popular media ministers, made no sense, reading more into the red moon than refracted light. For them the blood moon means the end of Israel or maybe the end of all of us. But whatever the blood moon means, it is bad. It is also crazy! Sometimes ministers are the flakiest people I know. Given the crazy ways that some of them read and interpret the Bible, I think standing in the backyard in my pajamas with a crick in my neck holding the one I love is perfectly normal. -Mark S. By Ruben Rodriguez La Feria News The 2022 NBA playoffs have been full of surprises since the opening play-in tournament. Now after a grueling month of high intensity basketball, only four

teams remain alive on their quest to capture the Larry O’ Brien Trophy. For one of those teams, the road has been very rough. That team being the Dallas Mavericks. Entering the NBA Playoffs as the fourth seed in the Western Conference

with a record of 52-30. The Dallas Mavericks were automatically placed into a first round bye aftering entering as one of the top four teams in the west alongside Phoenix, Golden State, and Memphis. Dallas has been a

on Thursday, May 19th. David Briones, the head coach for the boys and girls high school golf team, says “Theres alot of opportunities for golfers out there to further their education while playing

college golf. Vanessa will be our 3rd golfer to play college and we are looking to add many more in the upcoming years.” Congratulations to Vanessa for all her hard work!

Conference Finals are Set!

Golf Signing

La Feria’s own senior Vanessa Gonzalez recently signed her letter of intent to play college golf at Fort Scott College in Kansas. The signing was held at the La Feria High School

Bella Medina suited up. CJ Olivarez and David Bazaldua wore the Black and Gold of Santa Rosa one last time. Bazaldua and Garcia, who played excellently through the

prime contender since 2018-2019 with the acquisition of young star Luka Doncic. Although missing the playoffs in that season, Dallas has made it to the postseason the last two seasons, where they were eliminated in the first round by the Los Angeles Clippers in both seasons. This year, The Mavericks have been red hot with a solid offense consisting of Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith, Tim Hardaway Jr. On the defensive side of things, Maxi Kleber, Dwight Powell and Boban Marjanovic. Dallas is led by first year Head Coach and

former Dallas Maverick Jason Kidd. Kidd, who was a part of the Mavericks 2011 NBA Finals Run, looks to take the Mavericks back to the finals, this time as a coach. Dallas first faced off against the 5th seed Utah Jazz, after a back and forth series, Dallas won in game 6 to win the series 4-2. Dallas was then slated against the defending Western Conference Champion Phoenix Suns. In a competitive series, Phoenix went ahead 2-0, then Games three and four went back to Dallas where the Mavericks defended the home front. The common trend in the

series was that the home team was always victorious. Game Seven saw Doncic and Dinwiddie combine for 65 points as the Mavericks won game seven 123-90. Dallas now has a date with the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals. The Warriors have gone to the Finals five times in the last eight years. The Warriors last went to the Western Conference Finals in 2019. Dallas last went to the Western Conference Finals in 2011, the season which saw them capture the NBA Finals over the Miami Heat.

Poetry

Poetry is not creation but the creator For it breathes life to revive the lifeless. On great Angel wings it lifts the hopeless. It is heard in the joyful laughter of children. Its loving message aids the forgotten and fallen. Poetry is truth without guile, a lover’s smile, Sunshine of the soul to gently guide our way, The most wonderful treasure that blesses our day, And… In poetry is found the purest essence of God.
