La Feria High School has been offering short sports camps to help kick off this year’s 2022 summer. The sports camps are for kids in 5th through 8th grade and are currently wrapping up to finish this week at the High School. La Feria News spoke with the College & Career Readiness Director, Cassandra Zuvieta. Zuvieta shared a little about the camps that the school is putting together and the importance of
them. This is what she said. Zuvieta says that the School board really wanted to look at sports and enrichment camps for the summer. The kids need activities and fun things to do over the summer and Zuvieta says "With covid, we’ve just had so much remediation." She says that is something that has really come from the community. She thanks all the coaches and teachers that are really helping to bring back a feeling of
normalcy. Zuvieta thanks the Athletic department for stepping up and says that this is something "the Athletic program was really willing to do for us." The sports camps include Track, Tennis, and Golf for grades 5th through 8th. These are only the main coaches, for golf, David Briones & Charlie Prado for tennis, Michelle Panches and for track, Campos and Zuvieta. Unfortunately, because of the very busy schedules of coaches and deadline, La Feria News was unable
to reach out to all the coaches but was able to talk with Coach David Briones, head coach for Golf. He says "It's been going good, we've had a good turnout for most of the week," Briones says that he's really teaching the kids the basic form and the different clubs that are used. “Just the basics,” he says. He reiterates that the camp is two weeks, going from Monday through Thursday finishing up on the 16th. Briones says he’s very passionate about what he does, playing since he
was in High School. Coach Briones has been coaching at the High School for about 12 years now. Cassandra Zuvieta thanks all the coaches for their dedication to these kids, even during the summer, continuing to help provide activities. Zuvieta thanks the coaches to take time away from their summer and time with family to continue to share their passion for different sports. More stories on the camps that are going on this summer at La Feria ISD are to follow.

Santa Rosa Resident Sabine Garcia Receives Bachelor's Degree at Worcester Polytechnic Institute's 153rd Commencement WORCESTER, MA (05/17/2022)-- On Saturday, May 14, Sabine Garcia of Santa Rosa, Texas, who majored in Biology and Biotechnology Environmental and Sustainability Studies, was bestowed a bachelor's degree at WPI's 153rd Commencement. Nearly 1,200 undergraduate degrees were awarded during the university's 153rd commencement ceremony. This undergraduate ceremony marked the first time the entire class and their family and friends were able to gather together for an in-person ceremony since 2019. In her final commencement exercises before stepping down to become the Director of
NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, President Laurie Leshin presided over both celebrations, along with Board of Trustees Chairman William Fitzgerald '83. In her remarks, President Leshin celebrated the Class of 2022 and all they have accomplished during their time at WPI, including how they weathered the challenges of the pandemic. "While it would be unfair to describe the second half of your time at WPI as anything short of extraordinarily challenging, as always, I am so heartened by how this community came together to meet every moment," she said. The keynote address was given by Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH,
Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, who was awarded an honorary degree. She praised the members of the Class of 2022 for navigating the uncertainties of the pandemic and implored them to continue embracing the many shades of gray they first encountered due to COVID-19, and are likely to continue to face in their professional lives. Honorary degrees were also bestowed upon State Senator Harriette Chandler, the first woman from Worcester to serve in the Massachusetts State Senate, a position she has held since 2001. Lesley
Small Zorabedian '72 was honored with a Presidential Medal for her trailblazing efforts to help shape the university. She was one of the first women to be enrolled at WPI as an undergraduate in 1968 and in 1972, she became the first woman to receive an undergraduate degree from WPI. The undergraduate class speaker, Nicole Conill, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, with a focus on cyber security. Conill is pursuing a master's in Computer Science at WPI. Her speech was titled "Reflect on the Past. Celebrate the Present. Focus on the Future." She concluded by telling her classmates to "follow your heart to wherever,
whomever, or whatever it is that calls you. Use what you've learned from WPI, whether it's academic or personal, to guide you on that journey."

UTRGV Researchers Awarded Grant to Study Motor Recovery in Stroke Survivors

By Maria Gonzalez RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – June 2, 2022 – Dr. Michael R. Dobbs, professor and chair of the Department of Neurology in the UTRGV School of Medicine, has been awarded a $443,963 grant to research the motor recovery, along with the brain and spine degeneration, of 30 stroke survivors over the next
three years. The grant was awarded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which is part of the federal government’s National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dobbs said the R15 NIH grant will allow him to study whether degeneration after a stroke affects some areas of the brain more progressively than others, and whether that
degeneration extends to the level of the spinal cord. “We want to determine how this degeneration impacts the ability to move the first three months after a stroke,” Dobbs said. The project, titled, “Role of Alternative Sensorimotor Pathway Degeneration in Motor Function of in Acute Stroke,” will be led by principal investigator Dobbs, and co-PI Dr.
Kelsey Baker, assistant professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the UTRGV School of Medicine. Baker said it is estimated that, by 2030, an additional 3.4 million adults will experience a stroke. “White Hispanic males are projected to experience the highest rates,” she said, “In addition, preliminary estimates from our work suggest that stroke is a

This federal funding will provide the means to collect high-resolution and advanced neuroimaging protocols (MRI) through one of the first studies to capture neuronal pathway changes in the spinal cord in acute stroke. The study will be conducted at the newly established UTRGV Institute of Neuroscience in Harlingen. NEUROLOGY AND NEUROSCIENCE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT GENERATION
NIH grant reviewers called the grant application “a highly translational application from an experienced clinicianscientist that could produce some intriguing new clinical science for stroke survivors, while creating an outstanding training opportunity for students at UTRGV…” Dobbs said this Research Enhancement Award Program (REAP) project will provide a valuable opportunity for medical students to be exposed to hypothesis-driven research within the Valley. It also will enhance the UTRGVNIH research portfolio and provide medical students and undergraduate students opportunities to be at the forefront of research data collection and presentation. “Additionally, the work will lead to publications in scientific journals,” Dobbs said, “and could lead to additional funded projects through other NIH mechanisms.” The grant lasts through March 31, 2025.

That may be funny, but a bad economy is no joke. Experts in the field are predicting a serious downturn in the economy. Joining the voices of doom is the wealthiest man in the world, Elon Musk, no stranger to South Texas. In the electric car manufacturer’s own words, he is feeling “super bad” about the economy. As an expression of his “super bad” feelings, Musk plans on cutting the Tesla workforce by 10%. I wonder if Elon Musk’s “super bad” feelings are for himself or for others? He and the other 10 wealthiest people in the world recently saw their wealth double during the pandemic. Those billionaires went from 700 billion to 1.5 trillion dollars in accumulated wealth. However, for lower- and middle-class Americans the economy was “super bad” during the pandemic. Even with assistance many Americans struggled to cover their bills, find child care, and pay the rent. How much more “super bad” will things be as the economy slumps? In the Bible Dives is the name given to a wealthy man. He had everything including a poor man named Lazarus lying at his gate. RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Tuesday the hiring of Marques Dantzler, who has nearly two decades of experience working in college athletics, including this past year as the associate athletic director for NCAA compliance at Manhattan College, as senior associate athletic director for compliance and administration. In his new role, Dantzler is responsible for the direction, coordination and maintenance of a comprehensive compliance program and managing in accordance with university, conference, and NCAA rules, regulations, and procedures. He serves as the liaison for athletics to the NCAA Eligibility Center as well as university legal and UT System legal counsel on administrative matters for the department. He is also the liaison for undergraduate admissions and financial services, working collaboratively with units across campus to develop policies and procedures that ensure institutional, conference, and NCAA compliance. During his time at Manhattan, Dantzler oversaw the compliance and student-athlete development efforts of the department's 19 Division I sport programs and its student-athletes. "I am excited to welcome Marques to our department,” UTRGV Deputy Director of
Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator Molly Castner said. “He brings a wealth of experience in college athletics and is going to be a great asset to our studentathletes and coaches. A 2017 graduate of the NCAA Pathway Program, Dantzler started his career in college athletics as a facilities assistant at Buffalo State in 2002-03. Dantzler spent the next six years working in compliance at Power 5 institutions, first at Michigan as assistant compliance coordinator (2005-07) and then at Oklahoma as director of compliance (2007-11). “I am very excited about returning to South Texas and joining the UTRGV team,” Dantzler said. “I want to thank Chasse Conque, Molly Castner and everyone who participated in the search process. HHSC Preserving History of Austin State Hospital
Archaeologists Excavated More Than 6,500 Artifacts on Hospital Campus

AUSTIN – As part of the revitalization of the Austin State Hospital, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission is preserving the history of the state’s oldest psychiatric hospital, including more than 6,500 artifacts that archaeologists have found at the campus. From June through October, a small collection will be displayed at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. The hospital opened in 1861. It is now undergoing a transformation that includes the construction of a replacement hospital that will open in November 2023. During the construction of the new hospital, archaeologists have been excavating around the campus to recover and conserve artifacts. “As we continue to discover these precious artifacts, we’re getting some unique insight into
how psychiatric care has evolved over the past century in Texas,” said Scott Schalchlin, HHS deputy executive commissioner of the Health and Specialty Care System. “This knowledge not only gives us a glimpse into the past, it also propels the future of mental health care.” Some of the artifacts showcase the selfsufficiency of the hospital that once had its own power plant, water system, carpentry shop, mattress factory, sewing room for
clothing and bedding, ice factory, cemetery, and farm that included crops and livestock. Archaeologists have found farming tools, industrial sewing machines, and thousands of porcelain buttons that were popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Other artifacts include items that give some perspective about life inside the hospital, including game pieces like marbles, board game markers and checkers pieces. Archaeologists made some other discoveries including several military buttons from WWI and WWII and some Native American stone tools. The excavations began in October 2019 and continue with the ongoing construction at the campus. HHSC is preserving the artifacts, and there is a chance for the public to view a small collection of them. From June through October, some of the artifacts will be displayed at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin. The display highlights the evolution of the state hospital system, including an “Austin State Hospital” sign from 1925, which marked the year the hospital’s name was changed from “Texas State Lunatic Asylum.” Pictures of some of the artifacts, the Bullock Museum display, and the archaeology efforts can be seen below.

The preservation of the hospital’s history also includes the digitization of documents including medical records, personnel documents, and construction documents. Some of the records are more than 100 years old. It will have private rooms for each patient and ten 24-bed units that each have therapy rooms, classrooms, exercise rooms, an activity/multipurpose room, and other therapy spaces. Once construction is completed in November 2023, the building will replace the current hospital and allow staff to provide psychiatric care under one roof, instead of multiple buildings.
