They had DJ Mando, Groupo Regreso and Del Castillo playing the night away as people sat in their lawn chairs and blankets and listened to good music. Several vendors were on hand offering BBQ, nachos, elotes, fresh lemonade, funnel cakes and other delicious food. There was even a train ride for the kids to enjoy. There was even a surprise proposal during the festival. La Feria Fire Chief Phinney proposed to his now fiancé Janie. Congratulations to you both! The evening ended with a spectacular firework display that left the crowd in awe. One gentleman from McAllen that was visiting family mentioned that for a small town it was an amazing display. The city would like to thank all their sponsors and those who helped make the event a great success. July

• Snack smart: Snacking smart on the trail is all about two things when you’re hiking far: optimal nutrition and density. And when you’re hiking fast, it should also require zero prep. Take the guesswork out of the equation with Range Meal Bars, which pack 700 calories, 19 grams of protein and other vital nutrients like potassium and iron, in each vegan, gluten-free bar. Made of such natural ingredients as almond butter, crystallized ginger and chia seeds, they offer the fuel you need to keep going, without adding unnecessary bulk to your dayWhetherpack. you’re scurrying up a slope to catch a sunset view or mudsliding your way back to the tea thermos in the car, packing light can help you go farther, faster.

Great Hiking Gear That Helps You Move Fast! (StatePoint) Hiking fast isn’t necessarily about clocking your best time or the bragging rights, it’s about experiencing more goodness with friends and family. More alpine lakes, more craggy peaks and more wildflowers. More high fives at the summit, more victory snacks and more unexpected patches of wild blueberries. If your bulky, heavy hiking gear is holding you back, consider trading it in for these lighter -- yet still rugged -selections:•Fastand free footwear: Oh, the hiking shoe conundrum. Your trail runners feel light and free, but they don’t protect your feet on rugged trails. Your hiking boots hold up to the roughest terrain, but they aren’t meeting your need for speed. Carry two pairs of shoes? No one has the backpack space for that. With this dilemma in mind, KEEN developed the NXIS Collection, its lightest hiking sneakers to-date. Fast and stable, these hiking shoes with a running shoe feel can handle any terrain -- from asphalt to trail to rock to stone steps, yet they’re light enough for city hikes and just hanging out too. With a comfort fit that holds your heel firmly in place while giving your toes the space they need to stretch out, an all-terrain tread for extra grip on any trail surface, (think slippery roots, wooden bridges and boulder fields) along with serious toe protection, you can move fast with confidence. Using lightweight mesh, they’re breathable, and nearly all the shoes in the collection feature a waterproofKEEN.DRYmembrane to keep out water. To learn more, visit keenfootwear. com/nxis.•Reduce your load: Take the weight off your shoulders with a running belt. Bounce-free and chafe-free, running belts can be worn on the front, back or even on the hips, giving you the choice to shift the load. They also offer sufficient space for essentials, snacks and hydration to support you all day, without tempting you to pack more than what you actually need. Want an even lighter load? Opt for on-the-go hydration fill-ups with a portable water filter system.•Versatile trail shorts: Breathable and waterrepellent, Patagonia trail shorts are ultralight so they won’t weigh you down. And because they’re designed to improve range of motion, they also won’t hold you back.

The second-place essay, by Suyin Carrillo, a UTRGV graduate who earned a bachelor and master’s degree in Spanish, is titled Muchacho Relleno, about a stuffed eye of round roast, a recipe that means a great deal to her. “My mom would make it for birthdays or baptisms. We would always share kitchen duties and ingredient prep equally,” she writes in her essay. “My parents, for instance, took care of heavier things such as meat and potatoes, while we, my sisters and cousins, would handle the veggie cutting, washing and chopping. I am proud of my roots, and I am proud to have Spanish as my mother tongue.”

Of all the shocking images from Highland Park Illinois on the 4th of July, it was the abandoned lawn chairs, children’s wagons, and strollers along the parade route that haunt me the most. Of course, I knew what they meant. All of the litter were the things people dropped as they ran for their lives. Like passengers fleeing from a crashed airplane, they left their belongings behind. The abandoned baggage was in the wake of a mass shooting at the city’s 4th of July parade. Reportedly, 21-year-old Robert “Bobby” Crimo III climbed to the top of a building that towered above the parade. From that vantage point the accused opened fire with an “AR-15 type rifle”. Dozens were shot, 7 died. The victims were on the streets of Highland Park celebrating Independence Day. The 1776 birthday of this amazing country we call America. The hypocrisy is hard to miss. It was the abuse of independence that gave insane rights to an unstable 21-year-old to purchase weapons of mass destruction and then steal the right to life of 7 patriots. The images of the abandoned possessions haunted me because our children had sent photos all day as they sat on parade sidewalks in their own hometowns. Ironically, Linda and I were in a 4th of July parade when we heard the news of this most recent mass shooting. Next year, will any of us feel safe to watch an Independence Day parade? Doubtlessly, many will refuse to surrender to the fear. But maybe the bigger question is what kind of freedom are we celebrating? In all of the freedom to carry a damn gun is there no room for the freedom to safely watch a parade? S. Ross DMin. HURCH

Contest winner Maria Bolkcom, a junior majoring in Spanish, wrote about making tamales with her mother while growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico. Tamales, or “tapatíos” as they are called in her hometown, are her favorite food and evoke many emotions. “I never thought that I’d miss those flavors. It’s all about being grateful. It’s all about the appreciation for a meal so special and delicious that you can only get it at home,” Bolkcom wrote in her winning essay. “The process, dedication, effort and, above all, love, set an example for me not only in the kitchen, but also in my daily life.”

Pamela Herring, lecturer in the Department of Writing and Language Studies, chose to write about lefse, a Norwegian dessert made from potatoes, that can be used like a tortilla to hold different types of food, or eaten with just butter. The recipe was passed down to her by her father, who died when she was just 11 years old. He knew she and her siblings had a sweet tooth, she recalled, so, to entice his children to be his captive audience, he always set aside enough “dough” for dessert lefse. “The magical ingredient was cinnamon sugar,” she wrote in her essay, which earned third place in the contest. “All that could be heard now was the noises of happy little mouths chewing and indulging in the soft, warm, sweet delight our father made just for us. Perhaps, you could also hear him smile while he watched his three treasures magically transformed through his gift of love.” This was the third year the utrgv.edu.Peña-Olivaoneverycontinuenarratives,tellPeña-OlivaofandacquireencouragingSpanishpromotesummer.beThelikededumplingsrecipesfeaturingessaysbeenMemoriesCulinarias/CulinaryMemoriascontesthasheld.Thisyear,12weresubmittedavarietyoffromchickenandandbarbacoaBorregotosweetfareempanadasdecajeta.winningessayswillpostedonlinethis“Wealsowanttotheloveforthelanguage,whilestudentstoagreaterinterestdeeperunderstandingtheHispanicculture,”said.“Peopleustheyenjoytheandwewanttotodothiseventyear.”Formoreinformationthecontest,contactatana.pena@

While at PAU, Hinojosa took every opportunity afforded to him to empower himself and those around him. He was a four-year starter on the men's soccer team, a team captain and the Student BodyThePresident.leadership and drive Hinojosa displayed in various roles allowed him to engage with his community, both on campus and off, and make a difference. For the mark he left on PAU and the various ways he has represented the university since graduating, Hinojosa was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award in April. "I'm flattered and I'm humbled to receive such an award," Hinojosa said. "I would've never done all I've done if not for Pan American University. I thank the south Texas leaders before us who believed and fought in the importance of having a four-year institution at our doorstep. I grew up believing I could come to this side of the border and have a better life, and I did."Men's soccer played NCAA Division I contests as a major independent during Hinojosa's tenure. There was no recruitment in those days; Hinojosa said "you just showed up to the field and if you were good enough, you would be picked for the team." Hinojosa's senior season in 1983 was called "the best year ever for Pan American University soccer" by then-head coach Reggie Tredaway. The Broncs went 8-5-1 and Hinojosa, a fullback and team captain, was a defensive standout. "It was fun. It was an incredible experience for me," Hinojosa said. "I learned leadership skills being on that soccer team. If you believe in what you're doing, if you can excel in sports, you can excel at so many other things in life." His impact on the program went beyond the playing field. Now a highly successful investment banker, Hinojosa made one of his first deals with former PAU President Dr. Miguel Nevarez. "We were not getting any kind of help from the university. I set up a meeting with President Nevarez. I said, 'I'm Noe Hinojosa and I've been playing for the soccer team for a couple of years now and I'd like to see if you could help us with about $12,000 so we can have travel money,'" Hinojosa recalled."Wetraveled in station wagons and we got peanut butter and jelly, ham sandwiches for road trips. I didn't think it was right, especially because that team was probably the most representative of the campus population. Ninety percent of us were Latinos. He said, 'Let me see what I can do,'" Hinojosa continued. "About a month or two later, Dr. Nevarez calls me up and says, 'We set up a $25,000 budget.' And I went, 'Yes!' We started traveling in a team bus that said Pan American University with a driver by the name of Lupe Garcia. We started feeling like we were representing the school."Hinojosa joined student government in his later PAU years and became a leader on campus and beyond. He attended conferences in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans and participated in debates, leading to him being elected National Vice President of Student Governments.Hewasalso the treasurer for the HeKnightsIntercollegiatefraternity.grewthegroup's fundraising efforts by getting Tex-Mex bands, or grupos, to play at the Villarreal Convention Center. They used the money to donate to food pantries in various colonias across the Rio Grande Valley, giving those in need easier access to food. In 1992, Hinojosa cofounded Estrada Hinojosa & Company, Inc., based in Dallas. He manages the firm's transactions and has led the company to 30 consecutive years of profits. His career successes drive him to give back. Being a Bronc, playing soccer, getting involved with student government and experiencing life on both sides of the border taught him invaluable lessons about working hard and achieving big things –lessons he now uses to help others thrive through the "Triple E" mentality, too. "People have put all kinds of barriers in front of me just because of who I am, because my name is Hinojosa. But if you're educated, you learn to run like water," Hinojosa said. "Water goes to the left, goes to the right. It finds a way around. That's what our young people need to know. We are like water. People will put up barriers, but you can still move."

• Enjoy the Outside: Being active is always easier on warm, sunny days. Take advantage of summer weather to reduce your personal carbon footprint and get some healthy exercise! Find ways to do this by walking or biking instead of taking a car to the store. If you need to travel a longer distance, opt for public transport or carpool instead.

STC On Verge Of Forging International Workforce Partnership

ABOUT DR. JULIET V. GARCIA She was the first Mexican-American woman to serve as a college president in the United States. During her tenure as president, Garcia pioneered a partnership between UT Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, a community college where she served as president from 1986 to 1992, when she assumed the presidency of UTRGV’s legacy institution UT Brownsville. She stepped down as UTB president in 2014 when UTRGV was established.

(StatePoint) You don’t have to be a sustainability expert to incorporate elements of eco-friendly living into your everyday routine. This summer, think about the small changes you can make that can add up to make a bigger difference.

• Make Small Changes: Living sustainably can sound intimidating at first. Like any shift in habit though, changing behavior may take a while to stick, but small, consistent adjustments will mean the most over time, especially when it comes to everyday things like reducing your use of single-use plastics, and switching to reusable shopping bags and food containers. Take things one small step at a time. For example, commit to recycling one additional item each day.

sustainably by choosing an eco-friendly option like Flourish Honeycomb Recyclable Mailers. These mailers feature 100% recyclable material packaging and include a die-cut honeycomb layer to create space and cushioning that helps protect items during shipment, without using unnecessary plastic. Additionally, they can easily be tossed into the recycling bin after use.
