It’s that time of year again when Los Fresnos showcases its “Biggest Little Rodeo in Texas” each year. Unfortunately, last year’s rodeo had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the rodeo committee decided that it would be best to cancel and keep the health and safety of their spectators, contestants, volunteers and community safe. Now in its 32nd year, the city of Los Fresnos largest event of the year is set to take place on February 18, 19 & 20 of
2022! They are inviting everyone to come out to the PRCA rodeo and enjoy 3 days and nights of fun with 3 rodeo performances, concerts, a carnival, activity area, craft show, and livestock show! The rodeo events will include bull riding, barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling, mutton bustin’ and kids' calf scramble. The Heart of America Carnival, which will feature some of the most thrilling rides and games will take place
all three days. Let's not forget the concerts that will take place as well. On Friday night February 18th from 7:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. they will have The Spazmatics in concert. And on Saturday night February 19th, starting at 7:00 p.m. they will have Aaron Watson in concert. You could get your tickets and information at lfrodeo.com or tickets will also be available at Los Fresnos City Hall, Boot Jack ValleyWide and at the Stitch Gallery in Harlingen.

5 New-Year, New-You Resolutions to Boost Your Wellbeing
(StatePoint) It’s already the time of year to reassess where the past 12 months took you and decide what you want to improve, change or start doing in 2022. Coming up with meaningful resolutions can be hard. To help simplify this process and get started toward becoming a better you, here are five things to consider working into your daily schedule in the new year: 1. Cut screen time for better sleep. Multiple studies show if you stop using screens an hour or two before bedtime, you’ll likely have a more restful night’s sleep. Unplugging also allows you to relax and decompress after a busy day. Your energy levels will rise, your brain and body will thank you, and it will be easier to start fresh in the morning. 2. Add more fresh foods to your diet. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and nutrients,
so why not kick off 2022 with a resolution to eat more of them? Try a new kind of lettuce. Eat berries with your oatmeal. Take an apple to the office. Be realistic about how much you can eat in a week. Don’t overstock your refrigerator, but definitely add more fresh produce to your shopping cart. 3. Allow your favorite spaces to bloom. Adding a flowering plant to your favorite room, such as an easy-care Just Add Ice Orchid, inexpensively brightens your décor. Research shows that having plants boosts mood, productivity and wellbeing. Plants, including orchids, also remove toxins from the air. Orchids are particularly good at eliminating xylene, a chemical that causes nose and throat irritation and potential neurological issues. 4. Walk it off. Walking daily for even 15 minutes
burns extra calories and improves your mood. Longer walks, such as vigorous hikes, build physical and mental endurance and strengthen cardiovascular health. If you’re crunched for time, take that short walk or even a couple short ones throughout the day if your schedule allows it. The benefits are worth it. Don’t forget to bring your favorite walking buddy with you! 5. Sing in the shower, the car or the kitchen. Research has shown that people feel happier after actively singing than they do when simply listening to music.
If joining a choir isn’t your thing, never fear. Breaking into song in the car, shower or while you’re cooking can provide the same kind of lift. It doesn’t matter where you sing, it just matters that you do. Harmonizing with friends makes it even more fun. As you read this list, you might be inspired to come up with a few other encouraging ways to become your best self in 2022. Go for it. Kick off this new year with better focus, renewed enthusiasm and a fresh approach to the days and weeks ahead of you!

Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: How are teeth affected by an eating disorder such as Bulimia Nervosa?
“Your Community Newspaper”
ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
Bulimia is an eating disorder common among young women and a few men. It is harmful to their overall health and is particularly destructive to their teeth. Often these people are not overweight, but they perceive themselves to be “fat”. As a result they eat what they want, and they stimulate themselves to vomit. The resultant high-acid content vomitus causes a Dr. Adam Lalonde significant demineralization of tooth structure. The locations in the mouth where bulimia is noticed first are the back surfaces of the upper front teeth and the upper molars. The enamel (outer surface) of the teeth is dissolved. The patient feels sensitivity to sweet, cold, and heat. In addition to psychological counseling, bulimic patients need counseling about the dental problems caused by bulimia. They need daily fluoride gel applied in trays to the teeth. They should wash their mouths with a dilute solution of baking soda each time they vomit until the condition is under control. Advanced cases of bulimia require extensive oral rehabilitation including crowns, bridges, and subsequent preventive care. Dental repair is important, but secondary to the systemic effects, which in some cases may be death. If you have bulimia or know of a person who does, treatment and recovery should be started as soon as possible. Additional information can be also found online at www. ada.org.

Los Fresnos Soccer Is Set To Kick Off The 2021-2022 Season By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News
The Los Fresnos Falcons and Lady Falcons soccer teams are set to kick off the 2021-2022 campaign. Both Programs are coming off great seasons that included playoff appearances and a District Title. So what to expect from both teams. The Lady Falcons finished last season with an overall record of 19-7-1 and a district record of 10-4, finishing 2nd in 32-6A. A season that ended with a deep playoff run, suffering a loss to the Round Rock Lady Dragons in the
regional semifinal. Looking to repeat the success of last season. The Lady Falcons have a tough road ahead. Some key matchups include facing off against San Antonio Taft and McHi in the non-district calendar. For the Boys Soccer team, who also is coming off a successful season look to continue the momentum of last season. Finishing with an overall record of 17-4 and a district record of 12-1 the Falcons entered the postseason as the number one seed in 32-6A. In the State Playoffs, Los Fresnos lost a close matchup to Laredo Alexander in the
Falcons, Lady Falcons Take Part In Doubleheader By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News
On New Year’s eve, The Los Fresnos Falcons and Lady Falcons competed in a District DoubleHeader against the Brownsville Rivera Raiders and Lady Raiders. The Lady Falcons who were 1-1 in district play, looked to keep a positive record going, while the Falcons looked to kick off District Play with a win and end 2021 on a high note. The Lady Falcons who were coming off a big District win over Donna North, looked to continue their winning ways. From the tipoff, Los Fresnos played with sheer dominance and maintained control from the start. Defense also
was a key factor in the matchup as Los Fresnos outscored Brownsville Rivera and limited the Lady Raiders to less than 10 points each quarter. The Lady Falcons held on to win 56-20 over Brownsville Rivera. Key Players for the Lady Falcons included Sarahi Jones, Maritza Ortega, and Gaby Garrido. Next matchup was Boys Action as The Falcons looked to kick off district play with a win. Rivera quickly struck first to grab control and maintained it during the first quarter to make it 15 to 7. The Falcons answered back, however despite Los Fresnos out-scoring Rivera in the second quarter, The Raiders led 24 to 17 at the half. In
the third quarter, The Falcons and the Raiders were involved in a very close matchup as Rivera outscored Los Fresnos by just one point. The Falcons stepped up and gained the upper hand in the fourth quarter in another close matchup. Rivera managed to tack on 11 points to regain control and win 50 to 46. JJ Salazar and Keane Ogao had a strong performance, combining for 31 points in the game. With the District Schedule still young, both the Falcons and Lady Falcons look to capture district gold and punch their tickets to the postseason.
Area Round. Similar to the Lady Falcons, the Falcons also have some powerhouses between them and the Playoffs. Some Matchups to lookout for in the non-district calendar include facing off against Laredo United, PSJA North, and a non-district matchup against 32-6A Rival San Benito. Coming off strong seasons, both the Falcons and Lady Falcons aim to continue and build upon the successes of last season. Both Programs also hope to capture District Titles and make a possibly deeper run in the Playoffs.

The Next Chapter Poem
Far Away
You pack your bags and get in the car; you drive for a little yet feel so far. You think to yourself “Did I forget something?” Your mind says no, but something is nagging. You figure it out and turn around. You run inside, such a quiet sound. You get back in your car and continue to drive while thinking of your old home and life. You see the buildings big and large, which soon disappear, replaced with huge forests, you soon get drowned in fear. “My life was so different!” You say to yourself, “My little old bedroom and mom’s wooden shelf.” You finally make it to a five-hour drive would have been four if not for that beehive. You take a step, then a few steps more. You finally make it, then you knock on the door. You hear footsteps and excitement takes over. Your fear goes away lower and lower. The door opens and someone steps out, “please come in, ya little sprout!” Poem by Selene Olguin 12 years old.
Twenty years ago this month, the Boys and Girls Club of Los Fresnos was accepted into the membership of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Executive Director Edward “Eddie” Barron has been at the helm since. From a small building on 3rd Street with 7 members to our current unit at Memorial Park with almost 300 members annually, it has been an amazing journey where community youth have benefited from the Boys and Girls Club
experience. It’s been an honor being part of this community. Thank you everyone, members (past and present), parents, Board Members (past and present), City of Los Fresnos, United Way of Southern Cameron County, Los Fresnos CISD, Los Fresnos Police Department, Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce, and many, many other businesses, organizatins, and individuals that have been a big part of the club in the last 20 years.

(StatePoint) Diabetes is a chronic condition that leads to serious lifethreatening complications, however many people go undiagnosed and are undertreated -- a situation being further exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Do You Have Undiagnosed Diabetes?
people in the United States are affected by diabetes, and one-in-five of them are undiagnosed, according to estimates from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health services organization Cigna reports that between January 2020 and June of 2021, nearly 800 of its patients who were diagnosed with COVID-19 were found to have undiagnosed diabetes. Only 14% of those people had previously been diagnosed
with pre-diabetes. So why are so many people living with diabetes going undiagnosed? Cigna claims data shows that those at higher risk of having social or economic obstacles to health, also had a higher risk of undiagnosed diabetes and COVID-19, which can compound problems. “As is the case with many medical conditions, timely diagnosis and treatment of diabetes is
impacted by persisting health inequities that affect certain communities and populations,” says Dr. Mandeep Brar, Cigna medical director and board certified endocrinologist. “Factors such as race, ethnicity, access to healthful food, education, health care coverage and language barriers, to name a few, all contribute to undiagnosed cases of diabetes.” However, according to Dr. Brar, early diagnosis is critical for everyone: “When diabetes is left untreated, it will progress, causing complications such as neuropathy, kidney disease, diabetic ulcers and wounds, amputations and other serious and life-threatening issues. If you’re living with diabetes, the sooner you’re aware of that, the more quickly you can learn to manage your condition and prevent it from advancing.” According to Cigna, here are three steps everyone can take today: 1. Understand signs and
symptoms. Sharing any new symptoms with your primary care provider can be crucial in early detection and proper, timely treatment. Symptoms can include frequent urination, excessive thirst or hunger, unexpected weight loss, cuts or bruises that are slow to heal, frequent infections, very dry skin, extreme fatigue, and blurry vision, according to Dr. Brar. 2. Get screened. Schedule an annual preventive checkup or diabetes screening. Regardless of symptoms, one of the most powerful ways to detect diabetes is to be screened for this disease with a simple blood test by your primary care provider. If diagnosed with prediabetes, there are a number of lifestyle changes you can make to reverse prediabetes and prevent or delay Type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems. These changes include eating healthfully, increasing physical activity, losing weight and managing stress.
people in the Rio Grande Valley. People ages 5 and older can get a COVID-19 vaccine at one of 14 UT Health RGV Primary Care locations across the Valley. According to the CDC, “People with known current SARS-CoV-2 infection should defer vaccination at least until recovery from the acute illness (if symptoms were present) has been achieved and criteria to discontinue isolation have been met.” If you have tested positive for COVID-19 and are unclear about whether or
when you should get the vaccine, please consult your physician or other medical professional. For additional questions about symptoms, prescriptions and UTRGV COVID-19 drive-thru appointment times, call (833) 888-2268. 3. Assess risk factors. Some people are more likely to develop diabetes than others. In addition to being 45 years or older, risk factors include being overweight, having a parent or sibling with Type 2 diabetes and being physically active fewer than three times a week. Additionally, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are at higher risk than white people for developing Type 2 diabetes. If you have any of these risk factors, request a screening test with your primary care provider, regardless of your age. For a quick, online Type 2 diabetes risk test, visit diabetes.org/risk-test. (StatePoint) Is the COVID-19-related payment suspension (also known as a forbearance) on your home loan ending? Ready to resume making mortgage payments? Understanding your options and being proactive can help ensure a smooth process, say experts. “Loan servicers are currently reaching out to customers through emails, letters and calls to help them with exiting forbearance. Responding to this outreach promptly is crucial,” says Rulon Washington of Wells Fargo, who’s worked with nonprofits throughout the pandemic to educate homeowners on what they’ll need to do as their forbearance plans come to an end. Below, Washington answers common questions homeowners have when exiting their forbearance: Can I move missed payments to the end of the loan term? In most cases, if you were current on your mortgage or home equity payments when the suspension started and are ready to resume your regular monthly payments, you may be able to move missed payments to the end of the existing loan term. This additional balance won’t accrue interest and will be due when the loan is paid in full, refinanced, or when the home is sold. What other options are available? You may have the option to pay off missed payments in full or follow a repayment plan, which divides what’s due into manageable amounts, and adds it to the regular monthly payment. What if I need help with a lower monthly payment? If you need a reduced payment, you may qualify
for a loan modification. Wells Fargo and several investors provide streamlined, no-document modification review processes in many cases. What if I can’t afford reduced payments and need to sell? Your loan servicer can work with you as you attempt to sell your home, and in many cases, enable you to take advantage of the strong increases in U.S. home prices. Who controls how my loan is handled? Many loans are insured, guaranteed or owned by third-party “investors” who set the rules for how loans are managed. Investors include government-sponsored enterprises, like Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac, government agencies, such as FHA, VA or USDA, banks and private companies. While many investors offer similar programs to help homeowners coming to the end of a payment suspension, exact programs may vary. Will my home be foreclosed if I stay in forbearance or can’t resume payments? Servicers will not move to foreclosure or eviction on anyone who remains in an active, approved payment suspension plan. In the case of Wells Fargo-owned loans, all foreclosure-related activity and evictions have stopped on occupied properties through the end of 2021, except in very specific cases. For loans Wells Fargo services for other investors, we follow the investor’s requirements for customers as they exit payment suspensions. “We’ll make every effort to reach out to customers to discuss deferral of missed payments, modifications and other
available programs before advancing or initiating foreclosure,” says Washington. What if I’m exiting a COVID-related forbearance but have been impacted by a natural disaster? Contact your loan servicer for options during this difficult time.
Other Resources No-cost housing counseling agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can help assess your situation, navigate available programs and even work with your servicer on your behalf. To find an approved agency, call HUD toll-free at 1-800-569-4287 or visit www.hud.gov/counseling. Additionally, states, U.S. territories and Native American tribes are being granted federal funds designated for helping qualified homeowners address payments missed during a suspension and with payments going forward. Check with the appropriate housing finance agencies or contact a housing counseling agency for information about when these funds may be available and to determine if you might qualify for assistance. Finally, Wells Fargo mortgage and home equity customers can find additional information at wellsfargo.com/ repaymentdetails or can call 800-219-9739 to speak to someone who can help review their circumstances. “If your payment suspension is ending, help is available. Be sure to contact your mortgage servicer for next steps,” says Washington.
