The New Green DECA members hope to promote environmental conservation through recycling in the community

Ask Our Dentists Q: I have a problem with bad breath. Is there anything I can do about this, other than daily brushing and flossing?

ANSWERED by DR. ERIC VALLE More than 90 million people suffer from chronic halitosis or bad breath. Certain foods, tobacco products, & medical disorders like chronic bronchitis can cause bad breath, but in most cases, it originates from the gums & tongue. If you don’t brush & floss daily, particles of food remain in your mouth, collecting bacteria. Food that collects between the teeth, on the tongue & around the gums can rot, producing a sulfur compound that causes the unpleasant odor. Maintaining good oral health is essential to reducing bad breath. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris & plaque. Clean your tongue too with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper. Use floss to clean between teeth daily. Most importantly, be sure to schedule regular dental visits for a professional cleaning, & exam, every 6 months. Let your dentist know if you require daily use of a breath freshener to hide unpleasant mouth odor. Mouthwashes generally do not have a long- lasting effect on bad breath; your dentist may recommend a special antimicrobial mouth rinse if you need extra help controlling plaque.

L-R Norma Perales and Karen Lamas (not pictured is Mariah Gutierrez) are Senior members of DECA endorsing new initiatives on recycling through their project called “The New Green”. Photo: Karen Lamas Los Fresnos DECA Senior Members consisting of Karen Lamas, Norma Perales, and Mariah Gutierrez believe that recycling should be taken to the next level. Their project, “The New Green,” is aiming to endorse new initiatives for recycling in the school district and community. They are hoping to place bins in every classroom as students will have the opportunity to recycle. Informing the school and community by placing recycling bins in strategic areas will be the goal as they hope to provide monthly reports of the trash collected with a set goal, increasing each month. The 4240902_20458 bin will be in an accessible 6.65x5 area with proper labeling as the students can have4c access to recycle at all times. Perales mentioned, “Perhaps students and staff don’t realize the importance of recycling. The ultimate goal in our project is to promote environmental awareness and live in a better, greener planet.” Every individual that makes the simple choice to recycle has the potential to change the world. It simply takes a start to have others follow in their footsteps as the members are hoping to create an encouraging a t m o s p h e r e. G u t ie r r e z stated, “It is absolutely

crucial to initiate the change we want to see in the world by acting now.” By actively inducing the worldwide issue of recycling in our high school, we will initiate change throughout our entire community.” The project will impact the conservation of ou r environ ment for future generations and our local habitat of endangered species on the Gulf Coast. School support through the district, DECA, and Key Club can make this project succeed by informing others to take action. Perhaps, “The New Green” can bring the

community together as Gutierrez had also affirmed, “It only takes one person to lead and our community of supporters to follow us in this endeavor to promote recycling, reducing, and reusing.”
