On Thursday, February 10th, BiG Heroes presented at the Los Fresnos Rotary meeting. Believe in God's (BiG) BiG Heroes is a faith-based non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing “continued educational opportunities to young adults with intellectual disabilities posthigh school that seek employment.”
Martha Gonzalez, Executive Director at Big Heroes elaborated on this at the meeting saying, “What we’re doing is trying to find opportunities for our student's post-high school.” Mrs. Gonzalez explains that she’s had been an Educator, teaching in Brownsville for fifteen years. “For some, it ends once they graduate.” Mrs. Gonzalez says. When she found out that so many students
with disabilities don’t go anywhere after high school, she said that's when she had to do something. She says “that’s unacceptable.” Martha Gonzalez shows just how much these young adults can do! “(They have) so much ability, and so much that they can contribute to the community.” With a full and joyous heart too, bringing so much joy to the community to the people they interact with. For BiG
Heroes, It’s all about getting these students opportunities that they otherwise may never experience. At the meeting, Martha Brought along several of her students from BiG Heroes, two of them being newly hired workers at HEB in Brownsville! The boys, Luis and Oscar shared that their jobs are to stack and put away products at the store. Luis and Oscar both had to go through some rigorous training
and mini exams, but at the end of it, they both passed! They have been working for just about a month now. The Rotarians all applauded and congratulated the students with their achievements, surprising BiG Heroes with a check for $1,352. David Armendariz, current President of Rotary says “$1,352.52 came from Luby’s.” David says that 15% of every dollar the Rotarians spent at Luby’s went into this check. “Crazy, that we might enjoy our families, and than we got to give something back.” David later says that it’s great to give back to a non-profit that you know every single dollar is going to go towards these students. It goes to a good cause, you know that they’re doing something great with it. David Armendariz also encourages everyone to go out and visit BiG Heroes in Brownsville, to participate and help any way they can. BiG Heroes brought a booth for some of the work that you can buy to help support BiG Heroes' mission. You can visit their website at https://www.bigherotx. org for more details and to donate.

TSC Welding graduation ceremony reflects scholarship success
Recently, 12 of the first Welding students that received a scholarship thanks to the $35,000 donation by Stephen De La Garza last year, graduated with their certificates of completion. BROWNSVILLE, Texas (February 14, 2022) - In 2021, Stephen De La Garza donated $35,000 to the Texas Southmost College Foundation to fund full scholarships for students interested in the college’s craft training programs. Since then, 12 students received scholarships funded by De La Garza’s donation, and they recently graduated from TSC’s Welding program,
including nephew and uncle duo Christopher Solis and Eric Solis, respectively. The dozen graduates were honored with a ceremony and luncheon where they received their Fitter Welder and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10 certifications. “I call this a blessing,” said Christopher. “This is going to open up a number of opportunities for me
and I would not be where I am today without this scholarship and donors like Mr. De La Garza.” Eric said having skills that are in demand is a large accomplishment he credits to Mr. De La Garza and TSC. “Students like me have been able to gain the knowledge and skills we need for a field that is in demand right now, especially here in
Brownsville, and because of these scholarships, that’s invaluable,” he said. “I’m so humbled and I’m going to work hard, so that I can get to a point, where like Mr. De La Garza, I can donate to help others too.” As a token of appreciation, the welding graduating class artistically created and welded a scorpion out of metal parts that was presented to De La Garza during the ceremony.
De La Garza, a local Brownsville native and entrepreneur, said he has seen firsthand the difference a scholarship can make for a student, and he has always made it his mission to provide what he can so others can find success. “To impact lives in a way that provides opportunity, well, that’s the ultimate reward,” said De La Garza. “Any student who wants a
college education, should be able to get an education without money being a barrier. TSC is doing a wonderful job by opening doors and providing a highquality education. Together, we’re making sure that college is for all.” De La Garza has committed to fund additional scholarships building upon TSC’s efforts to make college more affordable for families and explaining that each contribution changes lives and is a crucial resource for TSC. TSC President Jesus Roberto Rodriguez said the ceremony was a symbol of what happens when a community comes together to support students and their futures. “It is this collaborative spirit of our community to make things work and this celebration has been a year in the making,” he said. “It was 2021 when Mr. De La Garza made his first contribution and we are now celebrating achievement and success. We are thankful to Mr. De La Garza for his commitment and belief in Texas Southmost College.” For more information about TSC’s Welding and Workforce Training programs, call 956-2953724 or visit tsc.edu/wtce.
Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: : Can you tell me what the connection is between oral health (gums) and heart health? I don’t see the connection. I was recently diagnosed with a heart condition and am now trying to take all preventive measures to keep it from becoming a bigger issue. Should I get my teeth cleaned more frequently now? ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
It’s always important to remember that developing good habits today can pave the way to a heart-healthy future. Research shows that periodontitis. Or gum disease, and its resulting Dr. Adam Lalonde inflammation almost doubles the risk for heart disease. What’s heartbreaking 15 that gum disease is highly preventable! A recent study revealed that common oral ailments including gum disease, missing teeth, and simple cavities, are as good at predicting heart disease as measuring cholesterol levels. And what’s more, those with higher levels of a certain oral bacteria are more likely to have atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. What can you do? Show your mouth and gums some love! • Brush twice daily and floss every day • Use an antibacterial mouthwash and chew sugarfree gum to stimulate cleansing saliva flow while on the go • Visit your dentist for regular checkups and cleanings Thorough brushing, daily flossing, and having regular checkups could actually help save your life. A Dominant Start! By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News Opening Day for the 2022 Texas High School Softball Season gripped the Rio Grande Valley as a long awaited softball season is officially underway. For the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons, who are coming off a great season, look to continue the dominance they displayed in 2021. To Kick off 2022, The Lady Falcons faced off against 32-5A Powerhouse Edcouch-Elsa at home. In
the top of the first inning, The Lady Yellow Jackets struck first, scoring one run thanks to an RBI by Liliana Gonzalez to take the lead. The Lady Falcons quickly responded in a big way by tacking on a total five runs to take a 5- 1 lead in the bottom of the first. Then the Lady Falcons continued their dominant performance on defense, holding the Lady Jackets scoreless. The Lady Falcons quickly went back to work in the bottom of the second, scoring 13 more runs to
win 18-1 in mercy rule fashion. Without a doubt a big win for the Lady Falcons, What’s next? With some big names in the nondistrict schedule including Weslaco East, Edinburg and Laredo Nixon, Los Fresnos looks to prepare for a tough season in District 32-6A. Los Fresnos made the postseason after a great playoff run and look to repeat in 2022.

As we near the start of round two of District 32-6A play, The Los Fresnos Falcons soccer team is on a dominant run, sitting as the number two team in the District Standings. Arguably one of the toughest teams in the district, Los Fresnos looks to continue their winning ways in round two. Holding a 5-2 record in District play, The Falcons have already racked up big wins over Weslaco, Harlingen, San Benito and an overtime win over
Donna North. Los Fresnos wrapped up round one play with a 2-1 win over Harlingen South. The Falcons lone two losses were to Rivera 2-0 and Hanna 2-1. So what does the second half of 32-6A play look like? The Falcons will begin round two by hosting San Benito on February 18, then travel to Donna North on February 22. Los Fresnos will then face off against Rivera at home February 25, before traveling to Weslaco to kick off March. The Falcons will then have a two game homestand where they will
host Harlingen on March 4 then Hanna on March 8 for their final home game of the regular season. Los Fresnos will then travel to Harlingen South March 11 to wrap up the district calendar. Los Fresnos possess the skill and firepower to make a statement and potentially take the lead in round two. In one of the most competitive districts in the RGV, Los Fresnos looks ready with all eyes set on the Postseason and share of the District Title.

In the most recent report to the Foreign Trade Zones Board, FTZ No. 62 recorded a recordsetting $8.9 billion for the combined value of imports and exports moving through the zone in 2019. The total value of export shipments through FTZ No. 62 reached $4.3 billion in 2019; $4.6 billion in imports. These numbers, the highest recorded in the zone’s history, saw products in the petroleum industry and shipbuilding equipment, supported by the steady transport of steel, aluminum and wind energy components. The Port’s strategic location on the U.S./Mexico border makes FTZ No. 62 an attractive place for shippers and cargo owners, which supports further job growth in the community. Ranking among the top U.S. steel ports, the Port of Brownsville moves more steel into Mexico than any other domestic competitor. In 2020, the port moved more than 3 million short tons of steel across the southern border. That comes as no
surprise with more than 10 million eager consumers within a three-hour drive of the port – with many of those located south of the border. Moving cargo across the border in both directions is made easy with a wide variety of reliable transportation options. Providing Class 1 rail service to and from the port to Mexico and all of North America includes Kansas City Southern de México for operations south of the border, and with Union Pacific and BNSF Railway serving northern routes. On-port rail service is provided by agreement with OmniTRAX, operating the Brownsville Rio Grande International Railway (BRG) on more than 45 miles of portowned railroad. When trucks are a better option, the Port of Brownsville claims conceptual ownership of the state’s first overweight corridor. Trucks crossing the border in either direction utilizing the specially designated route to or from the port, can load to the legal weight limits of Mexico – 125,000 pounds (45,000 pounds heavier than domestic limits). That translates into real savings in both time, money and logistical efficiencies.
and from his travels, concentrating on shadows, colors and expressions. Andes’ collection at the gallery dates back to 2008 and includes two of his most recent works The Sister, The Sculptor and Girl in a White Floral Dress. “This has been an exciting experience for me, and what’s made it even better is that I get to share this with my students and represent TSC,” said Andes. He added that including his students in this experience sets a positive example and shows each aspiring artist the opportunities that are available. Andes began drawing at a young age with his father, capturing
the fall colors of New Hampshire. He went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Art with an emphasis in painting from Oklahoma State University and the University of Arkansas, respectively. While teaching, he has remained active in the art scene showcasing work in galleries and becoming an active member of the Oil Painters of America. He started his journey at TSC in 2013 and since then has taught painting, design, drawing, art appreciation and art history. Andes’ exhibit will be on display at the Puente Art Gallery from February 5 to March 26.
TSC Art instructor showcases artwork at local gallery
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (February 9, 2022) - Robert Andes not only teaches and trains future generations of artists at Texas Southmost College,
but he also practices what he lectures as an awardwinning Rio Grande Valley artist, with an upcoming exhibit at a local art gallery.
With more than 30 pieces of art on exhibit at Puente Art Gallery in Brownsville, Andes said this is his first solo art show and he is honored.
“When I got the invitation, I was speechless,” said the TSC Art instructor. “As an artist, a solo show is the highest honor you can receive, so it’s still hard to imagine that it’s happening to me.” Andes’ exhibit opened Feb. 4 with a reception attended by his colleagues, students and community members. Most of his art on exhibit is for sale and includes his two Texas Association of Schools of Art (TASA) awardwinning pieces, Santa Fe Woman and A Sense of Silent Contemplation. Every piece is an oil painting on canvas and focuses on the introspectiveness of people in his community

(or normally would have produced or sold) at least $1,000 of agricultural products” in Gross Cash Farm Income. Using this definition, USDA counted 2,010,663 total farms in the report. If you do the math, one single farm produces food and fiber for 165 people. Nearly all of the farms are family operations. Surprised? Ninety eight percent of all farms are classified as family enterprises. So much for
the cries of a faceless, corporate agriculture. The report drills down even further. It says 89% of farms are defined as small farms. These smaller farms tend to be less reliant upon farm income for their living. Small farms operate 48% of the land while accounting for 20% of the value of production. The remaining 11% of farms are considered mid-sized and large-scale farms. They operate
on 52% of the land and account for 80% of production. These farms tend to be comprised of full-time farm families earning their living from the farm. Americans are blessed with the abundance of what these farms produce. Americans spend less than 5% of average per capita income on food at home—the lowest in the world, according to Farm Policy Facts. We are blessed indeed.
TSC Art Instructor and award-winning artist Robert Andes’ art work is currently on exhibit until March 26 at the Puente Art Gallery in Brownsville
