TSTC Computer Networking Instructor
Leverages Her Love for Technology in Teaching Role (ROSENBERG, Texas) - Renee Blackshear’s first experience with computers and technology was in junior high school, writing a program that made a virtual robot do jumping jacks on the screen. By the time she was using a computer to design a yearbook in high school, she was hooked on all the things she could do with technology. She enrolled at Texas State Technical College and earned her degree in Computer Networking and Systems Administration, which she now teaches at the college. “I was like, this is where I need to be because this is taking my interest and love of technology and making it work, building networks and allowing people to do things,” Blackshear said. “I just fell in love.” After also earning a degree in what is now TSTC’s Web Design and Development program,
Blackshear went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M University in networking and security. She is currently working on her master’s degree. “I can’t stop learning,” Blackshear said. “I just love everything about computers.” When she was a student at TSTC, her instructors shaped the instructor she wanted to become. “I want to be that instructor students are comfortable talking to,” Blackshear said. “I want to be empathetic to my students. I want to work with them. My job is to help them be successful. If I need to explain it with Legos, I’ll explain it with Legos. Whatever it takes.” Blackshear can also leverage her experience working in the industry to give students real-life examples of situations -including being a woman in a male-dominated field. “There’s still gender
bias -- you have to bring in your self-confidence and assurance,” she said. “I don’t care that I’m a woman. I’ll climb up the ladder and start running network drops. I’ll scrape my arms on those server rails too. I’ll crawl around on the floor. I can do it just as good as you can. Watch me. You have to have that positive attitude and just keep on rolling. Don’t let anyone get you down.” Overall, computer networking can be for everyone, Blackshear said. It is a field that is all about building and improving relationships between machines and applications. “Stick with it, no matter what,” she said about advice she would give prospective students seeking to enter the industry. “Just keep going. Learn every day.” TSTC offers online training to earn an Associate of Applied

Science degree in Computer Networking and Systems Administration and an advanced technical certificate in Cloud Computing. The program is part of TSTC’s PerformanceBased Education, offering students a self-directed and flexible way to fast-track
their training. In Texas, computer network support specialists can earn an average annual salary of $70,950, according to onetonline. org, which projects such positions to grow in the state by 17% through 2028. During the month of March, TSTC is honoring
women in history and on its campuses who work to make strides in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields every day. Learn more about TSTC at tstc.edu.

Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: My gums recently started bleeding every time I brush my teeth. Is this normal?
“Your Community Newspaper” 705 W. Highway 100, Suite B-2 Los Fresnos, TX
ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
NO – not normal! You need to see your dentist soon for an evaluation & cleaning. Bleeding gums are often the first signs of gingivitis, a medical condition that can lead to serious consequences including tooth loss and gum surgery. A healthy mouth consists of coral pink gums that are stippled like an orange peel. The gums are not red, purple or puffy. The gums do not bleed when the patient brushes his/her teeth. Dr. Adam Lalonde The gums are comfortable when the doctor or hygienist use a metal instrument called a probe to measure for pockets around the teeth. Pockets are the “turtle neck sweater” shaped spaces between the gum & the tooth. In a healthy mouth, pockets measure 3 millimeters or less. The level of the gums meets the crown of the tooth at the enamel, & there is gum tissue covering the space between the teeth. No dark triangles are visible between the teeth. Gums with gingivitis are usually red, purple, swollen, puffy & easily bleed. The surface of the gums appears smooth & shiny instead of like an orange peel. The disease is caused by bacterial plaque & by irritation from hard deposits called calculus. Bacterial plaque is a sticky substance that contains bacteria, bacterial glue, bacterial waste products & toxins. It gives teeth a “furry” feel and can be brushed or flossed away. Your dentist will recommend the cleaning that is appropriate for you after a thorough exam & x-rays. Once your teeth have been cleaned & returned to “normal” state of hygiene, it is important to keep up with regular dental check-ups as recommended. The Los Fresnos Falcons Baseball team remains perfect throughout 32-6A action, Holding onto a 3-0 district record, Los Fresnos has already swept the San Benito Greyhounds with dominant wins. And After racking up a big win over the Donna North Chiefs 13-2. The Falcons are on a mission to capture a District Title. So after the Donna North Series, What is in store for Los Fresnos
for the remainder of 2022? The Falcons will begin their series against the Rivera Raiders on March 29 through April 1st. Then arguably the two biggest series’ will be against Weslaco on April 5th and April 8. Following Weslaco, the Falcons will take on Harlingen on April 12 and April 14. Los Fresnos will then take on the Hanna Golden Eagles on April 19 and April 22. The Final Series of the regular season for Los Fresnos will be against Harlingen South on April 26 and April 29.
Of Course Los Fresnos was a major favorite to capture the 32-6A District Title. Currently at a 3-0 district record, The Falcons boast a strong core led by the senior duo of Matthew Padilla and Hector Muniz. Josh Munoz, Luis Lucio, Juan Garcia and Roel Gonzalez also lead the way for Rene Morales’ ballclub who look to repeat the success of the 2021 Postseason which consisted of the Regional Final appearance.

High Scoring Shootout

By Ruben Rodriguez Los Fresnos News
The Lady Falcons faced off against the Harlingen Lady Cardinals in another round of 32-6A softball during spring break. After the Falcons suffered a close loss to the Lady Panthers, Los Fresnos was looking to bounce back and get a huge win over the Lady Cardinals. Los Fresnos swept Harlingen in 2021, and with Harlingen coming off two losses to Weslaco and San Benito, both teams had a lot at stake. A Beautiful day that had wind gusts up to 30-35 miles an hour. With the wind blowing from the southeast in a ballpark that faces northwest, this was certainly going to be a recipe for a high scoring game. Los Fresnos sent a message earlyon as Left Fielder Victoria Altamirano hit a towering two-run home run to give the Lady Falcons the lead. Then the next batter up, Catcher Natasha Gonzalez hit a solo home run to make it a 3-0 game. Harlingen
would respond with clutch hitting as Emilia Salinas, Chloe Gracida and Savannah Ramirez had three straight RBI’s to tie the game up at 3-3. In the top of the second inning, Designated Player Dakota Martinez brought in Avry Hayes with an RBI Double. The Power hitting continued for the Falcons as Shortstop Andrea Guevara delivered with a tworun home run to take a 6-3 lead in the ball game. Harlingen would then respond off two hits by Charlise Ybarra and Andrea Salinas. Third Baseman Lilly Rocha delivered a three-run home run to tie it up at 6-6. Later a throwing error allowed Harlingen to score a run to make it 7-6. Los Fresnos trailed for the first time in the game. Los Fresnos would not be down for long as the Falcons managed to score eight runs as RBI’s by Martinez, Rodriguez, Perez and a three-run home run by Krystal Perez to give the Lady Falcons a 14-7 lead in the game.
Lady Falcons managed to maintain control, However Harlingen managed to answer back and take a 17-14 lead as great hitting by Ramirez, Gracida, Ybarra and a solo home run by Madison Vargas allowed the Lady Cardinals to be back on top. Lady Falcons, despite trailing once again, managed to put up eight runs once again as Katelynn Perez and Natasha Gonzalez both hit two-run home runs. Perez Later drove an RBI Single later on. Harlingen’s Athena Linnartz delivered a solo home run to allow Harlingen to grab a run back, but excellent defense allowed Los Fresnos to secure the win 22 to 18. In what arguably can be labeled as the game of the season, Harlingen and Los Fresnos combined for 10 home runs and 40 total runs scored in a 2 hour and 57 minute ballgame. Wind truly did play a factor in the ballgame. Los Fresnos will play Harlingen for round two at home on Tuesday April 12.

Ukrainian Folk Hymn While on the sea, hear the terrible roaring! See how the boat of my life rolls with me; In fear of death and in deepest of anguish, Lord, hear my prayer, watch my soul on the sea. Save me, O merciful Father, forgive me; How as my life with its ending I see. My youthful strength has been spent in the battle; Lord now, I beg you, have mercy on me! I have no strength left to aid on my journey. Help me to reach that fair land past the sea; Help me to travel to my native country! Lord now, I beg you, have mercy on me.

Making Pork Production More Efficient Texas A&M AgriLife team aims to improve the

sustainability index of the pork industry
Research on optimizing the sustainability of the pork production is taking place at Texas A&M’s O. D. Butler, Jr. Animal Science Complex. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Laura McKenzie) Written by Kay Ledbetter Pigs eat crops, pigs leave nutrients in manure, manure is used to fertilize crops and pigs eat crops – it is a sustainable operation that puts pork on the table across the nation and worldwide. But the system can be improved. Better diets for the animals result in better nutrients. Increasing the precision in the process results in higher efficiencies. That’s the purpose of a new National Pork Board grant-funded project being conducted by a team from the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Animal Sciences. Jeff Wiegert, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service swine specialist and assistant professor, and Luis Tedeschi, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research ruminant nutritionist and Chancellor EDGES Fellow, will lead the project. Karun Kaniyamattam, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral research associate on computer modeling. Accounting for natural
variation The primary objective of the work is to develop a sustainability index of the U.S. swine industry, Wiegert said. “By its nature, animal agriculture, and the swine industry in particular, is a sustainable operation,” he said. “Our intention is to optimize the sustainability of the swine industry by improving the precision of the process.” Wiegert explained that what’s being examined is the natural variation involved. The nutrient content of feedstuffs is influenced by regionspecific factors; the nutrient requirements of pigs are influenced by pig-specific factors; and the nutrient content of the manure is influenced by both feedstuff and pig factors. “The calculations typically used to formulate diets and predict manure nutrient output utilize a simplistic model that assumes the caloric content of a given feedstuff is always X, the protein content of the feedstuff is always Y, and that those two
can be added together to create a diet that meets the pig’s caloric requirements A and protein requirements B,” he said. This is deterministic modeling, Wiegert said, and most livestock are fed diets formulated through a deterministic model such as that developed by the National Resource Council in 2012. The system works pretty well because decades have been spent figuring out pig nutrient requirements, nutrient digestibility, and so on. However, variation creates problems. “Variables are never just X or Y, they are X plus or minus or Y plus or minus,” Wiegert said. “Same with the pig’s requirements. That inherent variation and uncertainty creates imprecision in the system that prevents feedstuffs from being utilized to their fullest value, prevents pigs from reaching their most efficient potential for performance, and manure nutrients from being accurately estimated.” Moving away from deterministic modeling is also necessary to account for random events and better understand which feeding practice is less risky, Tedeschi said. “We need to know which feeding practices have the highest probability of yielding a sustainable outcome,” he said. “Deterministic modeling is a great tool that allowed us to learn and develop decision support systems in the last 50 years. Still, we need to move on to new technologies that are more challenging but can help us with so many random
events going on at the same time.” Building in efficiency, sustainability The team intends to incorporate stochastic modeling into existing swine nutrition models to determine the impact of this natural variation in feed resource nutritional quality on swine growth performance, feed efficiency, carcass quality and manure nutrient composition. Stochastic modeling includes natural variation as an input to allow for the estimation of a range of probability outputs, Wiegert said. “This will allow us to determine the degree to which efficiency is ‘lost’ by not accounting for that variation,” he said. “Once this is completed, we’ll also complete a life cycle assessment of each step of resource utilization to gain a more holistic understanding of the sustainability of pork production in the U.S.” Wiegert said the results of this work will provide industry leaders and regulatory agencies a more complete understanding of the sustainability of the swine production. “We will also be able to develop a sustainability index through which pork producers may be able to gauge the performance of their own operations to drive continuous improvement in an important field,” he said. The team expects to provide actionable data at the end of the three-year grant.
