As a new face to the team, what are you most excited about in your role at The Lakelander? Working as a magazine editor for the last 13 years has taught me that there’s no better way to get invested in or to learn about your community than to work for (and read!) its local publication. That’s what makes me most excited to be working with The Lakelander. What has been your favorite article to write and why? Too many to name! In general, any story I get to write about a small business owner is at the top of my list. Both of my parents are entrepreneurs, so hearing about someone’s new project or what they’re psyched about gets me psyched, too. How do you overcome writer’s block? If I’m having trouble, I’ll give up on whatever it is I’m writing and come back to it when the deadline is

looming a little larger. The pressure of a ticking clock usually kicks something in my brain into high gear. Tell us a bit about your favorite moments from your own wedding day. We got married in the backyard of my husband’s childhood home. As I walked down the aisle, Brian met me halfway and we walked the rest of the way together. When we got to the “altar” (a giant hexagon he and his dad constructed), everyone erupted in applause. And another favorite detail: We didn’t offer dinner to guests — just a buffet of 18 different cakes. Where are your go-to spots in Lakeland? You’ll find me (and Brian) working at Concord Coffee more mornings than our budget should reasonably allow, and on weekends we head downtown for the farmers market and to stop in at a few of our favorites: Pumpernaks and Twenty Seven.

hat if we told you that, in some way, the global COVID-19 pandemic is a reminder to the wedding industry that love transcends all? This year, couples from all over the world continue to make the heartbreaking decision to cancel, postpone, or adjust their wedding plans. Elaine Welteroth—the New York Times best-selling author, Project Runway judge, and former editor in chief of Teen Vogue—is one of those brides. Like many brides this year, Elaine and her now husband, Jonathan Singletary, drastically changed their wedding plans to comply with COVID-19 regulations and protect the health of their family and friends. The reflections along the way from Elaine’s wedding day are what 2020 is all about. In a recent interview with Vogue, Elaine recaps her love story with Jonathan, a story that begins when they were both around 12 years old meeting through church and growing up in Northern California. This wasn’t love at first sight; it wasn’t until February 2014 that there was a love interest between the two. After dating for two and a half years, in December 2016, Jonathan proposed to Elaine at a family holiday dinner. When the couple started the weddingplanning process, they went through a few location ideas and finally settled on the rolling hills of San Diego. The wedding was to take place on Sunday, 5-10-20, which became a meaningful date for Elaine and Jonathan. After all, it was Mother’s Day. The couple’s wedding plans became a tribute to their mothers, and the date became significantly special. Sunday
was also the day they’d met as kids. “The couple envisioned every detail with the help of their wedding planner, Mindy Weiss. An elevated...Sundaygospel-brunch wedding with elegantly plated soul food and a festive black-tie dress code.” (Vogue) As the world tried to navigate the impact and global spread of COVID-19, it soon became clear that Elaine and Jonathan’s dream wedding wasn’t going to happen. They both felt overwhelming waves of denial, but as reality started to set in, they were reminded of the meaning of their wedding, their chosen date, and their three-and-a-half-year-long engagement. Elaine was inspired by the online messages saying, “Love Cannot Be Cancelled,” and she and Jonathan were determined to tie the knot on their special date of 5-10-20.
LOVE CANNOT BE CANCELLED Within weeks, the couple completely changed their wedding concept to a virtual wedding. They traded the Bay Area’s rolling hills for their Brooklyn stoop and had most of their guests tune in virtually, except for a handful of local guests, including their mothers. Elaine and Jonathan’s Brooklyn stoop decor featured a whimsical floral arch that framed the front door and was the centerpiece for their virtual wedding. The couple was challenged to find creative ways to observe the social-distancing guidelines in place by Governor Cuomo, including maintaining six feet of distance at all times. Elaine created a standing

chart and wrote guests’ names on the sidewalk in chalk to ensure everyone was six feet apart. In-person guests danced in the street and on the sidewalk while keeping a distance from one another. The couple shared their DJ song list with their virtual families so that they too could celebrate from afar. In the midst of chaos, we are all reminded of what truly matters, what it means to truly celebrate love. For Elaine and Jonathan, it became more about setting aside the ideals and getting back to the rawness of why they were getting married and what it meant for them to continue this journey when circumstances seemed imperfect and chaotic. Elaine’s motto for her virtual wedding was, “Do the best you can with what you have.” And that’s exactly what she did to make her wedding day “nothing short of magical.” Historically the term “wedding reception” was coined because of the literal meaning of “reception:” the action of receiving something. The couple receives their community for the first time as a newly married couple; likewise, their friends and family receive the newlyweds as a married couple. Elaine and Jonathan’s wedding did just that. “The wedding became a communal effort. Whether it was jumping in to DJ, or donating a piece from their own closet to help us pull our wedding looks together, everyone in our tribe contributed something special to the celebration,” Elaine says. The wedding industry has had an opportunity to truly slow down and help couples reflect and prioritize the aspects of their wedding day that are meaningful to them. We are reminded that love transcends all.

BLING THINGS When it comes to jewelry, Lakeland couples are all about tradition, says Taylor Saunders of Gaines Jewelers. In her 13 years in the business, there’s been only one true shift in preference — and a pop star may be to blame.

Ever since Justin Bieber got engaged, Saunders says, oval-shaped diamonds, like the one he bought Hailey Baldwin, have come back “in full force.” Part of the appeal, she suspects, is that it’s a shape that makes the diamond appear bigger.
As far as diamonds go, Lakeland couples are becoming more and more interested in labgrown and conflict-free diamonds. Saunders says Gaines works to educate its customers but doesn’t encourage lab-grown stones as they don’t hold a lot of resale value.
While rose gold is gaining steam nationally, and interest in yellow gold has picked up locally over the last three years, Saunders says white gold still reigns supreme in our area. “It’s just classic,” she says.

OLD FLORIDA ROMANCE he purpose of a styled shoot is threefold: They allow vendors to push the limits and create something fresh; it helps build the vendor’s portfolio with images of styles they’d like to be creating more of; and, for couples planning a wedding, they provide tons of inspiration. “Effective styled shoots are ones that bring something new to the table — a unique design element, a color palette that isn’t seen very often, etc.,” says Emily Waters of Treasury Rentals, who styled this vintage, tropical, Florida-inspired shoot. “We loved the idea of playing off vintage colors and patterns, natural tones, lush tropical greenery, and orange details (because of our history in citrus farming),” Waters says. “We also love designing with bold color palettes, and this was right in our wheelhouse.” A word to the wise: Not all styled shoots are created equal. Waters strives to style shoots that are attainable for couples, meaning the items are available for rent, and the elements included are affordable. “If elements aren’t accessible for full events, it can be misleading for couples and ultimately be a letdown as event inspiration,” Waters says. In other words, “Do your research.”

A BRIGHT FUTURE Lake Alfred’s Adams Estate aims to become a destination wedding spot — for Floridians and beyond.

B
y the time the Strang family decided to turn their grandparents’ house into a wedding venue, it had been sitting empty for years and in some amount of disrepair. Their grandmother had designed the home in 1942, and, after she passed, they were at a loss for what to do with it. One thing they knew: The property, including the surrounding acreage that had served the family’s citrus business, Gapway Grove Corporation, shouldn’t be sold for parts. “We had a developer contact us wanting to buy the land and the house and wanting to tear the house down,” says Eve Strang Bass. “It was going to be a golf course or 4,000 tiny little ugly houses. We wouldn’t even think about that.” Then, inspiration struck: Bass helped her daughter plan a wedding on the property, and the
idea for Adams Estate as a wedding venue was born. “When we decided to make it the wedding venue — just letting our imaginations run wild — we realized that there really isn’t a destination wedding spot locally,” Bass says. The four siblings — Bud Strang of Winter Haven development firm Six/Ten, architect Max Strang, Gapway Grove President John Strang, and Eve — dreamt big, building cottages up the neighboring hill for guest accommodations (and occasional Airbnb rentals), renovating the boathouse to serve as a second venue on the property, and breaking ground for a commercial pool overlooking Lake Alfred, a spa, a conference space with extra lodging, and, eventually, a structure they’re calling Reynolds Hall, which will allow for indoor weddings of up to 150 people.

It seems they’ve thought of everything, though Bass admits her daughter’s wedding served as a kind of cheat sheet. “I got to experience [the property] first-hand, thinking, ‘We need this’ and ‘We need that,’” she says. Once they decided to turn Adams Estate into a venue, one thing they definitely needed was a space for the bride and her bridesmaids to get ready for the big day. Accordingly, the whole second floor of the main home was converted into various suites for the bridal party to eat, hang out, and get their hair and makeup done. There’s even what they call a “quiet room,” with a bed for anyone to lie down if they’re feeling overwhelmed by the events of the day.

Outside, the team has created a small garden area for ceremonies, and a terrace where two large hickory trees once stood. (Bass can remember her grandfather paying her a penny for every nut she could pick up from the yard.) With its views of the lake, this area serves as a picturesque reception spot, but the whole property is fully customizable, with rooms in the house for buffets, cocktail hours, and even dinner tables for smaller weddings. Bass, who recently sold her longtime Winter Haven business, The
Shop, to be Adams Estate’s general manager full-time, says one of the best parts of the project has been getting to work with her brothers. And she thinks her grandmother would be proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish together. “My grandmother was very family-oriented, but she was also a very good business woman,” Bass says. “I think she would be very happy to know how much joy there is out here. Because who doesn’t have a good time at a wedding?”

By keeping a few key tips in mind, it’s not hard to achieve your dream big-day look.

Celestial. Ethereal. Radiant. Lovely. These are just a few of the words that Patricia Uiterwyk and her team at Venue Salon used as inspiration for this styled hair shoot (more on that later), but she says the starting point isn’t much different for real-life brides. It all comes down to inspiration. “Pictures say it all,” Uiterwyk says. “Most brides today have Pinterest or screenshots of what they are attracted to.” Often, the stylist will also have a lookbook (or an Instagram feed) on hand with examples of their past work, which provides an opportunity “to show our own work on hair that may be similar to theirs.” Also recommended: Plan ahead. Uiterwyk says Venue’s stylists might talk through options like extensions, or a new color or cut for the big day. “If given time, we can grow into what they’re looking for,” she says. “We also may recommend, based on their hair goals, coming in for color, deep conditioning, shine service, or dusting (a haircut that only focuses on the very split ends).” Cassidy’s look — a boho flower crown and natural curls — started a few days before the shoot, with a deep conditioning and color treatment to bring a cooler tone

to her hair. The look took four hours split over two sessions, so in addition to discussing the time commitment to achieve your desired look, you should also ask your stylist about what’s realistically achievable (both for your particular hair and their level of expertise) and whether it will last the length of the ceremony and reception. Venue offers complimentary trial sessions for its guests, but Uiterwyk says to get referrals and try several stylists before committing. Between the trial and the actual event, you’ll be spending plenty of time together. “Brides have to love what is created for them and feel confident,” Uiterwyk says. “What’s sexier than a confident woman?”

There are many important people who will surround you on your big day. From your bridal party to your future spouse, this day is filled with individuals who have played a significant role in your life and will play a significant role on your wedding day. In addition to these individuals, there’s another person who will also play an important role on this day. They’ll be the one who will handle the most cherished moments and give you the ability to look back on this day with deep fondness. They are the storytellers and memory keepers, and they will be with you every step of the way: the wedding photographer. Wedding photographers get to see every aspect of a wedding and provide a unique perspective of the big day. From the hiccups to the hoorays, photographers have seen it all and can be a valuable resource in the wedding planning process, too. Local photographer Tiffani Jones first started shooting weddings in 2009 while working full-time as a registered nurse. More than 10 years later, she’s now a full-time photographer with over a decade of experience documenting dozens of couples’ big days. She’s here to glean
some insight on what to expect from your wedding photographer and give some overall advice on weddings, too — all from a photographer’s perspective. How should couples start searching for their wedding photographer? By the time most couples hire a photographer, they have set their wedding date and booked their venue. If working with a planner, ask about photographers they recommend, keeping in mind the aesthetic of photography you gravitate toward. If you are not working with a planner, try searching your wedding venue and see how photographers have photographed other weddings at your venue. What important elements should couples consider when choosing a wedding photographer? Aesthetic, experience, reviews, trust, and budget. Since budgets for weddings hugely vary, you will see price ranges for photographers also vary. Remember that old saying: “You get what you pay for.” Additionally, the photographer’s personality has to gel with the couple’s.

When should couples first meet with their photographer? One to one-and-a-half years. Yes, that soon! Most photographers are booking one to two years in advance, and the early bird gets the worm, so to speak. So, if you really love a particular photographer, book them right away to save your date! Best questions to ask your wedding photographer? 1. How long have you been professionally shooting weddings? 2. Do you have backup equipment if something malfunctions? 3. How do you back up the files after the wedding to ensure they will be preserved before delivery to the client? 4. W hat if the photographer gets sick, injured, etc.? Will there be a replacement to cover the wedding?

Top tips for working with your photographer? Relax – I know that’s easier said than done but just enjoy being with one another, and your family and friends. If you do, you’ll forget there are even cameras around! Communication – Have you ever heard the saying, “You don’t know what you don’t know?” Well, that is true especially when it comes to photographing weddings. I generally send out an online questionnaire one month prior to the wedding. This gives me a lot of logistical and personal information that helps me better serve my couples. From “Do you have any personal things that bother you about yourself in pictures?” to “Are there any family dynamics that I need to be aware of ?” There’s nothing worse than a couple saying they hate the way they look in their pictures. Your photographer isn’t a mind reader; tell them what you are self-conscious about so they know how to photograph you at your best. We want to make clients happy!

WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS GET TO SEE EVERY ASPECT OF A
What are your thoughts on “first look” photos? I think first looks are a personal choice. I never push my clients into doing one. The only times I’d suggest one is if the ceremony is close to sunset (photographers need light) or if the couple wants all photos completed before the ceremony. Should couples hire a wedding planner? Yes, yes, and a resounding YES! I know a lot of people think that it’s not a necessity, but I really feel like my couples can enjoy their day without having to deal with all the unforeseen logistical nightmares that can happen on a wedding day. For example: You’ve planned
a romantic outdoor garden reception under the stars, and it starts storming during your ceremony and the reception space is all set up. Who is going to have a rain backup plan? Who will implement the plan? This is one example where an experienced wedding planner turns into a super-powered superhero! What tips would you give to someone planning a destination wedding? From a photography aspect, reach out to your top photographers and ask them if they do destination weddings. If so, ask them what their travel fee is to document your day. If that option is out of your budget, try
researching local photographers. What would be your overall top tips for couples as they plan for their wedding day? 1. Be willing to be flexible during your wedding day. As much as we professionals like everything to go perfectly, there are certain aspects of the day that we can’t control, like the weather. Know that your team is working very hard for you. 2. Enjoy the people who are attending. This is one of the only times in life you’ll have everyone you have emotionally vested in one room. How awesome is that?

Location and price were the deciding factors for the couple when it came to their venue. The Sommer Building owners were so accommodating, Gordon says, they even handled the wedding invitations.

But their most cherished detail? The vows. “We wrote our own vows, and they brought us both to tears,” Gordon says. Take, for example, something Gordon said to Ellie: “I vow to accept all your quirks — like putting my cups in the dishwasher before I’ve finished using them, or losing all rational thoughts and emotions when you see something so cute, you have to squish it.”
ON THE VINE Flowers were a big priority for Ellie, who wanted a big bouquet with a lot of greenery and vines. The final product included lavender, white flowers, eucalyptus, and vines.

A wedding so nice, they did it twice. That’s what one might say of Teresa and Hoang’s two-day event. They kicked off the celebration with a traditional tea ceremony — a Vietnamese ritual in which the bride and groom serve tea to their future in-laws as a sign of respect — at their parents’ houses, followed by a vow exchange at Hollis Garden. On day two, they were married at St. Joseph Catholic Church

It was a jam-packed weekend, but that only created more opportunities for making memories. Teresa will never forget her favorite one: the moment Hoang surprised her with a choreographed dance to Korean pop song “Call Me Baby” by EXO. Along with his groomsmen — who all practiced separately in St. Petersburg;
Gainesville; and Asheville, North Carolina — Hoang pulled off a seamless performance in front of their 450 guests. “This was my favorite moment because it made me admire Hoang that much more,” Teresa says. “Despite our very hectic two-day wedding, he willingly chose to burden himself with this extra stress while also managing the wedding festivities, just to see me happy.”

WHAT A KNOCK-OUT “Teresa and I met under pretty standard circumstances — through mutual friends, parties, and school functions,” Hoang says. “I remember showing her no mercy when she was the last girl standing in a dodgeball fundraising event.” The two were friends on Facebook, so Hoang messaged Teresa to apologize “for hitting her square in the face,” which started a months’-long conversation until he built up the courage to ask her on a lunch date.

SCHOOL ROMANCE After their first meeting during the homecoming dance at George Jenkins High School, Courtney and Brent dated a few years before going their separate ways. “Inevitably, in a town the size of Lakeland, we would run into each other a few times over the years,” Courtney says. “Despite being apart, we never forgot about each other.” They were married almost 16 years after that first dance.

They picked a date in February, which happened to fall right in the middle of orange season. that we were out in the gorgeous Florida landscape,” Courtney says. Creating that feeling of home was even more important to the couple while they were planning, as shortly after they got engaged, they moved to Atlanta for work.
“We chose to decorate using oranges and magnolias — two items that are distinctly Southern, and definitely Lakeland,” Courtney says. The fruit and flowers (plus a few books, since both Courtney and Brent are avid readers) covered the reception tables, which sat beneath Spanish moss trees strung with lights. “The open sky, the rustic barn, the old house, and the sprawling grounds never let us forget

The wedding of Rhiannon and Elijah is a textbook lesson in “you do you” for your big day. The couple, who met in a criminology class at Southeastern University, left no detail unpersonalized, starting with Rhiannon walking down the aisle to a violin version of their favorite rap song and their Boba tea cocktail hour, to the chicken wing food truck and Volkswagen photo-booth bus send-off. Let’s back up. Chicken wings?
“Chef Marcus from Gertrude’s Low Country Wing Truck went above and beyond to ensure the food service was smooth,” Rhiannon says. “Elijah and I decided to have that because we love wings, and we only wanted things that we love to be at our wedding.” And, during dinner, another personal touch: Motown videos on the projector. “The whole day was us,” Rhiannon says. “I loved that.”

A MOMENT LIKE THIS After the ceremony, the couple drove to Lake Mirror for photos. They count the car ride among their favorite moments of the day. “It was the first time we were able to escape the noise after saying ‘I do,’” Connor says. They knew all that was left to do was celebrate.

The best advice Connor and Jennifer received after they got engaged was this: “Guests generally care about three things: the food, the music, and how you made them feel.” The first was easy (they served chicken with a choice of sauces). The second and third were a bit more complicated.
PLANT LIFE Instead of using drapery to separate the ceremony space from the reception, the couple hired Johnson Plant Rental to create a wall of plants. After the ceremony, the plants were redistributed around the room. “It added so much beauty and greenery throughout the large space,” Connor says.
Their main goal was to make guests feel comfortable — and ready to dance all night. Since music is their love language, that became the day’s most prominent detail.

“Music was the biggest part of our wedding day, and that’s reflective of our personal lives as well,” Connor says. From the ceremony music (Jennifer walked down the aisle to “Always” by Tyson Motsenbocker, which was
playing when they got engaged) to the first dance (which Connor wrote and recorded himself), music took center stage. The couple even curated their own playlist for the cocktail hour. “We didn’t get to experience it first-hand, but the ability to share something so immensely special with our guests in such a subtle fashion was very fun,” Connor says.

EVERY LITTLE THING Attention to detail was the word of the day. Breathtaking flowers were placed throughout the 24,000-square-foot estate. Perhaps the most notable arrangement was on the side of a ridge just beside the outdoor ceremony area; it formed an intricate, monogrammed “R” which matched the monogram on their wedding invitation.

Lakeland residents Benny and Melody Robles love to travel. “It’s the ultimate adventure. Plus, every trip exposes you to new types of people, different ways of living, and opens up your mind,” Melody says. “So, without hesitation, we decided upon a destination wedding.” The couple chose California because Melody had a great deal of family on the West Coast. Planning a wedding from 3,000 miles away required a lot of help — and a stroke of luck. “I Googled ‘Sacramento wedding planners’ and ended up going with the first one who called me back,” Melody says.
TOWERING SWEETS Not surprisingly, the Robles had a larger-than-expected cake — 12 tiers, in a variety of flavors, that rose to a whopping seven feet tall. Brandy West of Go West Events and Bakery said that it was the largest wedding cake her team had ever created.
Wedding planner Aubrey Silva of Alluring Events was not scared by the Robles’ vison — they wanted the most exciting wedding and reception possible. Formal, but fun. Luckily, between the couple and the planner, there was no shortage of ideas.

As the 300 guests from around the country filed in, classical musicians set the tone. Despite the formality of the surroundings, the ceremony was
lighthearted and whimsical. The father of the groom, Benny Robles Sr., officiated and offered an upbeat message of love, sharing many of his ideas in both English and Spanish. “It was my idea to have him officiate,” Melody says. “I wanted him to have a special part in our ceremony. The entire day was just unbelievably sensational.”, she concluded

UNFORGETTABLE: THE VENUE The bride and her mother had discovered the venue of choice years earlier when the two were looking for a dream destination for Melody’s Quinceanera celebration. The largest private estate in Northern California, Sacramento’s Grand Island Mansion, built in 1920, is a spectacular Italian Renaissancestyled villa. Even if you have never been there, you have probably seen its picture. It has provided the setting for films and music videos, hosted events attended by well-known guests (think President Ronald Reagan), and has frequently been featured in magazines, including National Geographic, Architectural Digest, and more.

You made it through the formalities of the wedding ceremony, and now you and your guests are ready to let down your guard. That’s where the long-awaited cocktail hour comes in to shake things up. It’s arguably the best part of a wedding celebration (and potentially the most fun to plan!) as it serves as entertainment for your guests while you prepare to dance the night away. With so many options to choose from for the tasty bites your guests can enjoy while sipping on a complimentary drink, it’s easy to wonder which one will be the biggest hit. We asked Cem Demirhan, the executive chef of downtown Lakeland’s Nineteen61 for the perfect pairings of wine and hors d’oeuvres for a wedding cocktail hour. The restaurant has catered local weddings since the fall of 2015. While it specializes in Latin American and Southern cuisine, these cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are guaranteed crowdpleasers for any wedding-guest list.

A Southern Romance La Chulita (The Cutie) & Blackberry Cryo Popcorn

The French raspberry liqueur in this cocktail paired with the Blackberry Cryo Popcorn sampler makes it a great option for romantic-themed weddings. Whether your wedding décor is florals galore or all things pretty in pink, this pairing is a visual and tasty accent to make your wedding day complete. Demirhan says, “The La Chulita was paired with the Blackberry Cryo Popcorn for its fresh infusion of berries. In the recipe, we use Chambord liqueur as one of our base ingredients to elevate those berries. While the La Chulita is a light and refreshing cocktail, it pairs well with the Blackberry Cryo Popcorn because of its creamy and smooth texture that doesn’t overpower the cocktail. The combination of berries complements each other not only in taste but texture as well.”

Out to Brunch 61 Pisco Sour & Aerated Apple Sorbet
Brunch wedding themes are gaining more popularity with each wedding season, and anything sorbet is practically synonymous with them. The tart and sweet combination of the cocktail will certainly get your guests’ attention in a complimentary way. This is also an option for a bridal shower brunch or a postwedding event. “I would suggest pairing the 61 Pisco Sour with the Aerated Apple Sorbet,” Demirhan says. “The sour taste in the cocktail makes it perfect for the tart and sweetness of the sorbet. The initial bite into the sorbet hits your palate with the intensity of the green apple. As it begins to dissolve in your mouth you discover the natural tartness from the green apple, followed by a sweet flavor from the natural sugars in the actual apple. The Pisco also worked very well as a palate cleanser after the consumption of the sorbet that blended both flavors together for a smooth finish.”

Stunning Rustic El Jefe (The Boss) and Salmon Tartare
If you’re taking advantage of Lakeland’s rustic and rural features for your wedding, the El Jefe cocktail with the Salmon Tartare is a wow factor for your taste buds. The citrus and lemony combination for the hors d’oeuvre, paired with the banana liqueur and dashes of blood orange bitters, can pay homage to Florida in a subtle way.
“The El Jefe and Salmon Tartare are a great combination,” says Demirhan. “The smoky notes from the Maestro tequila pairs well with the natural smoky notes from the Aji Panca Marinade used for the raw salmon. The orange bitters also used in the cocktail pair well with the citrus notes from the lemon mustard aioli, and the slight taste of bitterness from the Dijon mustard makes for a smooth finish. The avocado mousse then hits your palate with fresh notes of citrus and creamy finish that also work well as a palate cleanser and provides an opportunity for your palate to discover new distinguished tastes in each bite.”

Wedding season is in full swing, and receiving an invitation in the mail is a pretty exciting event. Two people in your life have found a forever kind of love and they want to celebrate with you. Just the thought of the beautiful occasion you’re set to witness can spark a special sense of happiness. At the same time, it’s important to remember the role of a wedding guest and do what you can to make the experience as seamless as possible for the bride aand groom. From RSVPing on time to silencing your phone before the ceremony, it’s easy to accommodate the couple in seemingly small ways as you prepare for the event.

RSVP ASAP The first thing you’ll want to do after receiving an invitation is RSVP by the requested deadline. A rule of thumb is to only RSVP for yourself unless you’ve been given the green light to invite a plus one or children. It’s also the perfect time to let the bride and groom know of any food allergies. If the couple knows you and your potential guests are a guaranteed “Yes” or “No,” seeing the number of confirmed guests sooner than later alleviates lots of pressure. CONSIDER THE DRESS CODE Figuring out what to wear to a wedding can be a fun, or overwhelming, experience. An easy place to start is the wedding theme. You can typically find this on the invitation, but if not, keep in mind the location, what time of year, and what time of the day the wedding is held. For formal ceremonies like “black tie” or “white tie,” women can opt for a gown while men are suggested to wear a tuxedo. If it’s a brunch-themed wedding in the spring or summer, female guests can wear a floral or pastelcolored dress, while male guests can wear a shirt and tie or light suit. A universal rule is for female guests to avoid wearing white or any related colors like off-white and ivory. When it seems like you have nothing to wear, it doesn’t hurt to keep it simple.

STICK TO THE REGISTRY It’s understandable to want to pick up something that you’re convinced the future newlyweds will love or need as their lives unite. Still, unless it’s on the registry, it might not be their taste, or they could very well already have it. Purchasing an item that’s not included in the registry runs the risk of the couple not liking it and having to go through the awkward hassle of returning it. The safest option is to trust their judgment and select an item they’re guaranteed to appreciate.
WHAT TO WRITE Not sure what well wishes to send the bride and groom? Whether you’re signing the guest book or stumped on what to write inside of the “Congratulations” greeting card, begin by knowing that the newlyweds will be happy with any message you send them. It doesn’t have to be a lengthy letter. If you know the bride and/ or groom well, feel free to include something that’s special to your relationship with them, like a funny joke or a memory. If you’re not familiar with the couple, it’s OK to keep the message short and generic with phrases like “Congratulations on tying the knot!” or “Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness.”

DURING THE CEREMONY It’s always best to be on time, or roughly 20 minutes early. The idea of sneaking in and grabbing a seat in the back might not work out as smoothly as one thinks. It’s also helpful to put your phone on vibrate or silent before the ceremony begins to avoid any distractions. If the wedding isn’t unplugged and cell phones are allowed, consider waiting until after the ceremony to snap pictures and record footage. If you do decide to take pictures during the ceremony, make sure the flash and sound are off. Refrain from posting on social media until the bride or groom get a chance to share their special moment.
