Lakeland, my home. I’ve called Lakeland home for the past 11 years. After graduating from Southeastern University in 2014, I moved back to my hometown of Dallas, Texas. Little did I know that I would be returning to Lakeland one year later. There’s this saying amongst our friends: “Lakeland has an interesting way of following you or bringing you back.” In 2015, I moved back to Lakeland, and it was community and friends, a career change, and my then-boyfriend and now-husband that brought me back. Throughout the years, my husband and I have met and connected with new people because they too have visited or had a connection to Lakeland. We quickly realized that Lakeland is much more than a medium-sized city; it’s a place to call home with a network of people and friends beyond our geographical limits. Recognized as one of the fastest-growing metro areas in the country, our city continues to grow and gain popularity amongst reputable sources. Just to name a few recognitions, Lakeland has been

I

16

“Lakeland has an interesting way of following you or bringing you back.” named the #1 top city to buy a home, the #6 safest city to live in, and the best place to start a business. In this issue of The Lakelander, we highlight some of our city’s most beautiful homes and neighborhoods. We hope you are inspired to pick up a new project or continue looking for your next home in Lakeland. Whether it’s apartment living, renting, or home ownership, Lakeland offers a variety of lifestyles from which to choose.

C O N T R I B U T O R S THE WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT MAKE THE LAKELANDER

“Downtown Just Got a Little Bigger” Written by Jenna MacFarlane, pg. 26

CHARMAINE PATTERSON As a Lakeland newbie, Charmaine Patterson finds any excuse to write while exploring the city. In her free time, she loves traveling, trying new restaurants (or recipes), and snuggling up with a good book. Charmaine has an M.A. in Journalism from Columbia College Chicago and a B.A. in Advertising from Michigan State University (go Spartans!). She and her husband, Mark, have been married for three years.

JENNA MACFARLANE As editorial assistant and staff writer for The Lakelander, Jenna MacFarlane is the newest addition to the team. Hailing from Sarasota, she is a recent grad from Southeastern University and fell in love with Lakeland when she arrived. Jenna just finished up her degree in communications and is passionate about her craft; she believes the highest form of art is hope and seeks to communicate it in every piece she writes. @jenna_macfarlane

TINA SARGEANT How long have you lived in Lakeland? I am originally from Sarasota and moved to Lakeland four years ago to attend Southeastern University. I sure do miss the beach being so close, but I love the always-supportive community that Lakeland has to offer. I feel super lucky to have met some amazing people here and to call Lakeland a home away from home. How/where do you draw inspiration as a writer? I fell in love with classic literature in high school which inspired my initial desire to write. As I’ve gotten older, though, I’ve grown to

18

love longform think-pieces and profiles from publications like The Atlantic and The New Yorker. Words are powerful, and I’m inspired by anything that turns a story into an emotion, connecting mundane concepts with a greater meaning. What does a perfect Saturday morning in Lakeland look like for you? I really value slow weekends. A perfect Saturday morning for me would consist of some good craft coffee (I’m looking at you, Hillcrest) and a thrifting run with my roommates. Pair that with driving a couple laps around Lake Hollingsworth while listening to a good playlist, and I’m all set.

As a first-generation American and the daughter of immigrants, the American Dream was something I learned about early in life. Growing up, I adopted the same definition of the American Dream that had marked America for decades — since the 1950s, to be exact. Post World War II is often described as one of the most prosperous times in American history. The economy was booming, and Americans looked to a financially stable future ahead of them. Home ownership and the pictureperfect lifestyle was our nation’s pride and joy, soon becoming the identity of the American Dream. During this era, assembly-line jobs were booming, and suburban communities started to define the American Dream.

Global economic conditions have changed since the 1950s, and although America remains the most powerful nation in the world, we look to our Founding Fathers and our nation’s roots for the reframing of the American Dream. For most of us, this ideology of the American Dream has instilled a drive within us to help reach goals, build generational wealth, and look to a better future than the one handed down to us by

our parents. In recent studies, millennials rank pursuing their passions much higher as part of the American Dream than older generations. As a result of Postwar America, our country offers more opportunities than it ever has, allowing its citizens to pursue the life they want — defined not just by the accumulation of material wealth but instead by what one creates and contributes. Our Founding Fathers depicted the American Dream to promise freedom and equality, giving individuals the opportunity to pursue their vision of happiness. Although the promise of prosperity and safety are central to the American Dream, its resurgence promises a focus beyond materialistic success. It reassures a focus on inalienable rights, values, and opportunity alike. The American Dream is more than a house with a white picket fence; instead, it is the ideal that as individuals we decide what we want to call home. The American Dream is defined by the diversity of our individual experiences. Together through shared values, we build lives and communities that continue to make our country the land of opportunity.

Lakeland’s Virtual Hot Chicken Restaurant The Lakelander staff had the pleasure of trying several items from Sarah’s Hot Chicken’s virtual restaurant menu, and, while it was all delicious, let’s talk about the most important part of the dishes, the Hot Chicken.

arah’s Hot Chicken in Lakeland is a virtual restaurant specializing in Hot Chicken, combining classic Nashville flavors with fresh, madefrom-scratch recipes. The menu offers chicken sandwiches, chicken tenders, shrimp po’ boys, and salads — all customizable with heat levels. When they say, “Damn Hot,” well, you’ve been warned. As you take the first bite into Sarah’s Hot Chicken Sandwich, you crunch through a perfect layer of extra-crispy fried breading. Next, you sense the faintest touch of sweetness from the breading’s spice mix, and, as your teeth pierce deep into the perfectly cooked, juicy chicken breast that was brined for 24 hours, the pungent explosion of heat and flavor fill your mouth in an instant. Then, bite after bite, you continue to enjoy the rest of the ingredients in perfect harmony: slaw, pickled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles. The rest is history. Sarah’s Hot Chicken is only available for delivery by placing an order through sarahshotchicken.com or Door Dash.

Downtown Just Got a Little Bigger Over the past few years, city developers have envisioned a more centralized downtown area equipped for Lakeland’s recent exponential growth. Mirrorton — a new, sprawling 305-unit apartment complex — is an exciting step in the direction toward a thriving community in the heart of our city.

Written by Jenna MacFarlane

imeless is the word that comes to mind when one tours Lakeland’s brand-new apartment complex: Mirrorton. A seamless extension of its surroundings, Mirrorton breaks traditional molds to suit the modernday apartment resident looking for a home in the heart of downtown. Allowing its guests to “choose a unit as unique as you,” potential tenants have no shortage of opportunity when selecting a living space: 17 distinct floor plans range from one bedroom/one bathroom to three-story townhomes complete with garage access. The Mirrorton Apartments celebrate the best of Lakeland’s art and culture with both form and function. Its thoughtfully designed common

spaces feature carefully curated local art pieces, spacious 10-foot ceilings, and open-concept floor plans. Most coveted among its features, though, are Mirrorton’s soughtafter amenities that offer residents space to work, grow, and play. Mirrorton encourages entrepreneurial development and productivity: members fuel up at the PERKS coffee bar and community kitchen before heading to the complex’s very own co-working space. Active and urban, Mirrorton supports its residents’ health and wellness, too. Renters enjoy a private fitness studio with cutting-edge technology and equipment, along with a ground-floor spa equipped with massage chairs and a dry sauna. If the indoor amenities don’t cut it, Mirrorton offers its neighborhood ample outdoor space to enjoy the Florida sun all year long. The courtyard features a 2,000-square-foot pool, a dog park, and a covered terrace that inspires gatherings of family and friends while establishing the space as its own distinct community.

Located on Bay Street, Mirrorton is a fresh, vital element of Lakeland’s thriving downtown; the complex embraces its ability to push the hip and historic elements of the area forward. A short walk or bike ride from shops, galleries, music venues, and local spots, Mirrorton “blends precedence with innovation, establishes new norms, and beckons you to drive less and stroll more.” Sound like a perfect fit? Book a tour, or submit an application today, at mirrorton.com or by calling 863.208.6528.

The gym features cutting-edge equipment such as Peloton bikes and digital on-demand workouts.

Meet Peggy: “I began my journey with Agnini Family Dental at the age of 68. You’re never too old! I didn’t realize, looking at my teeth daily, how crooked they were. Dr. Mike transformed my crooked teeth with Damon® Braces into a smooth, even smile. A little later, Dr. Drew consulted and presented me with a plan for a new adventure. While my teeth were now straight, they weren’t the best quality. It was a very precise plan for implants and veneers. He explained each stage, using x-rays, developing templates, and fitting temporaries. The technology was incredible. When he finished, I had a healthy, even smile. And I have to say, I had no pain, maybe a little tenderness after braces adjustments. Wow, what a difference! Thank you Dr. Mike and Dr. Drew and all of your staff. I feel like family.”

THE K TEAM MAKES REAL ESTATE SIMPLE

The K Team Real Estate Services and The K Team Property Management are dedicated professionals committed to guiding clients through the often confusing and ever-changing real estate market. Written by Jenna MacFarlane

Cathy “K” and Zac Kluytenaar

Whether you’re buying or selling, The K Team is local, family-owned, and assists both brand-new and experienced clients as they navigate real estate transactions — every step of the way. K Team Founder, Cathy “K” Kluytenaar, and her son, Zac Kluytenaar, Broker/Owner of the K Team, give us an in-depth look at how theirbusiness operates and what to expect from them in the future. The year 2020 was crazy. How did The K Team manage to do so well, and how is 2021 looking for your team? Cathy “K”: 2020 was an amazing year for our team, and we are beyond grateful for the opportunities our community has provided. Adaptability kept the phones ringing and the deals coming. As a locally

owned brokerage focused on service, we don’t have national or international standards and procedures to follow. We are fully invested in our local market and can react to the needs of our community almost immediately. Zac: Being real estate professionals with extensive experience, we understand the only thing consistent in this industry is inconsistency. Interest rates change, styles change, prices change, and even pandemics happen. However, people will always need somewhere to call home. Adapting to market conditions, focusing on solutions, and putting our clients’ needs first have always worked for The K Team. That is the template for our success, and we plan on more of the same in 2021. So far, we are off to an incredible start and are so excited for what lies ahead. The K Team is now managing properties. How has this changed your team, and what is the future there? Zac: Property management has added amazing new capabilities for our team and generated exciting opportunities for our investors and clients. We have new builds, renovations, and projects taking place all over Polk County. The impact our efforts are having on the community and the returns we are garnering our investors is truly rewarding. We manage well over 200 residential and commercial units, with new properties being added to the management portfolio weekly. Whether by mandate or choice, the world spent the last year at home. For some, that understandably felt like captivity, but when you’ve poured as much heart and soul into a restoration and expansion as Will and Kate Marshall have, it’s a great comfort to spend more time in a place that manifests your vision and surrounds you with fond memories. Here’s how the Marshalls brought new life to a Mediterranean Revival home. 42

TH E L A K E L A N DE R

Kate Marshall grew up in South Lakeland, but she and Will spent the first few years of their marriage in Birmingham, Alabama. “We developed our appreciation for old, historical homes there,” Will says. “We’d drive around the city’s neighborhoods and be inspired by its beautiful houses. So, we knew we wanted a house with lots of character.” “We had a house in Birmingham that had [no character],” Kate says. “We spent a lot of time and energy trying to give it character. So, when we moved back to Lakeland, we knew Beacon Hill was the neighborhood where we’d most likely find a home we’d love.” It’s no surprise that the historic character the Marshalls sought would take work to bring forth. “We bought it with no contingencies because we knew we’d have to touch everything,” Will says. The home didn’t even have an HVAC system until the late 1990s. Nearly everything else

needed updating, and Will and Kate were determined to retain the home’s originality as they did it. The stunning living room is the new part of the home, bridging the gap between two original structures. Says Kate, “We bought a main house and pool house, having worked through the requirements to connect them in the future. We knew it wouldn’t work for our family in the form we purchased it: a 2-1 in the main house with no bathtub. But the pool house had a bathtub, so we’d walk across the driveway to give our young son a bath.” Now, “Most visitors remark on the beams,” Kate says, referring to the pecky cypress–wrapped members adorning the ceiling. “We looked at this style of home online a lot. Nearly all of them included beams like this, so we wanted to incorporate them in the expansion. We’ve considered adding them in the kitchen, too. We’re always trying to do things that tie everything together.”

Connecting the two original structures with the living room resulted in a U-shaped home, the vision of architect John Kirk. The functional utility of the shape works wonderfully. Will explains, “The beauty of a U-shaped house is that we have our side where we can cook, work, and sleep, and the kids have their side where they can play. The original pool house is now the kids’ play room, and if it gets a bit messy, you can’t see it from the common living area.” Kate agrees. “It was helpful to live in the house for a while to get a feel for how we wanted to remodel. The touches we’ve added are about functionality. We want to live in the house — and we use every square foot of it. Of course, we were determined to keep the original style. Fortunately, there are so many resources now that helped guide us in keeping with the Mediterranean-style architecture.” On the wall in the hallway, the Marshalls have hung two remarkable

44

things. The first is a copy of John Kirk’s renderings of what’s now the Marshall Family home. “It was so cool when we saw what he drew come to life. Notice that each section of the house drops down about five inches. This is a historic preservation board requirement designed to highlight the original structures from the addition,” Will says. “There’s also a different stucco finish between the old and new for the same reason. These nuances make it very interesting.” The second thing is a collage of black-and-white pictures of the original house. You might notice that you’d have to drive through the front porch to get to the garage, traveling over what is now a small, attractive courtyard formed by the new U-shape. “The seller handed this down to us when we moved in,” Kate says of the collage. Built in 1923, the home has had just four owners. “I love the idea of an old house that hasn’t had 25 homeowners — there’s just a handful of history here. It

feels more personal. Of course, looking at these photos and the ones we took when we bought it, we ask ourselves the cliched question, ‘What were we thinking?’ But I’m so grateful for our home and what it’s become.” Though there are visually striking features everywhere you look, when I asked Will and Kate to show me their favorite ones, they directed me toward the dining room. As mystifying as it may sound at first, the pretty white oak of the dining room floor reveals that the Marshalls relocated the front door from this room to its now more central location in the next. “When the house was built, it was too expensive to put white oak throughout, so it was only used in the front room where guests were received,” Kate says. “Less expensive pine is used in the remainder of the original house.” Kate then points out the beautiful, original archway between the dining room and combined entryway and kitchen

I SS U E 6 2

space. “We love this arch on its own, but, because we reoriented the entrance, we wanted to keep this original entrance to the kitchen. In the renovation, we echoed this archway in the doorway that leads from the living room to the original pool house structure.” Restoring and imitating the woodwork was a significant challenge. “The back of the trim is rounded off rather than being square,” Will says. “So, every piece of backbanding had to be milled. The piece couldn’t simply be cut and installed. We had one carpenter come in to sub for another one, and the work of the second had to be ripped out and redone to match the first carpenter’s work.” Of course, that’s just one example of a multitude of challenges the restoration has presented. But the Marshalls’ work has quite clearly been worth it. “Restoring, expanding, and preserving our home gives us a sense of pride in the work, and it’s aesthetically interesting,” Kate says. “And it’s just more appealing and comfortable. We love to have people in our home. We are always asking ourselves, ‘What do we want this to look like in five years, ten years?’ — because we want to stay here. Our family has grown so much in so many ways in this house. We’ve hosted the dearest people in our lives, too. We can’t imagine not being here.”

Take a look inside this light-filled modern Scandinavian farmhouse built from the ground up in the neighborhood of Lake Hollingsworth. 48

The Lake Hollingsworth neighborhood is one of Lakeland’s most scenic residential areas. It boasts a beautiful lake with a waterside, members-only private club, The Lakeland Country Club. This neighborhood is home to what is presumed to be the oldest-standing house in Lakeland — a home estimated to have been built in 1907. In addition to such historic treasures in this neighborhood, there’s also room for modern classic masterpieces, such as the Adams’ house. Building a house from the ground up is a major undertaking for

anyone, and although Joel Adams is an experienced home builder, he and his wife, Kelly, collaborated with an external team of architects and builders who specialize in the Scandinavian farmhouse design. This architectural style is a modern vernacular hybrid of the classic farmhouse motif in which modern farmhouse elements are seamlessly combined with Scandinavian design influences. From A-frame roofs to floor-to-ceiling windows, the home’s clean lines and minimal features draw its main inspiration from Scandinavian design.

life

Kelly Adams wanted the interior of her new home to feel relaxed and coastal yet elegant, without overdoing hues of blue.

The Adams’ eclectic style added personality and balance to the interior design of their home.

Initially, the Adams considered remodeling an existing house, but they soon realized that going in the different direction of building a custom home was the best option for them. Their goal was to create a space that would work for the family’s lifestyle and a place to call home for the foreseeable future. “Initially, we wanted to tie our house into the already existing historic elements in Lakeland and downtown. I really do love an old home, a Mission-style house,” Kelly says. The first iteration of the Adams’ new build reflected a Casita: Mission Style house; but, as Kelly considered the plans, they didn’t quite feel right. “I knew I wanted something light, airy, and open with lots of light, a complete departure from what I had done in the early 2000s when

everything was dark wood and heavy,” Joel says. The foyer sets the tone for the house — an elegant entryway with streaks of natural light fills the space, bouncing off soft-white walls and creating an inviting escape. “Although the architecture of the house is modern and minimal, I wanted to create an inviting and comfortable space,” explains interior designer Ashley Martin. For Joel and Kelly, form and function were important parts to the design of the house. The home, which they share with their two daughters, was designed to be enjoyed by each member of the family, keeping in mind their personalities. “We didn’t want wasted space,” Kelly says. “We wanted our home to have purpose and be made for the people

“The kitchen is the most used space,” says Kelly. “Because of our schedules, I’m usually starting dinner and then Joel jumps in to help finish and clean the kitchen.”

living in it or the guests visiting,” Joel says. “It’s not just a stoic showpiece with faux elements. Our goal was to achieve well-thought-out architectural elements intertwined with everyday living.” Joel and Kelly worked with Martin to achieve a mix of modern and classic interior design with a coastal influence. Throughout the house, Martin incorporated the soothing palette of the sand and ocean, and neutral linen fabrics and textures to create a tranquil space — a place to call home year-round. The main-floor master bedroom is complete with an on-suite bathroom and vestibule, a true sanctuary with a mix of modern and classic elements to create the perfect retreat. As with the rest of the house, the windows create a glass wall that disappears, opening the entire space to the outdoors and offering views of the glistening pool in the backyard.

FOR JOEL AND KELLY, BUILDING THEIR HOME WAS A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE TWO OF THEM AND A TEAM OF EXPERTS. The Piano Room

The living room features a black-iron ring chandelier pulling the eyes upward and contrasting the light-wood ceiling beams which add warmth to the space and complement the light-wood floors found throughout the house. Made with white pattern tile, the fireplace serves as the focal point to the room. For the furnishings, Martin chose a custom area rug to pair with a variety of upholsteries creating a perfectly balanced, cozy living space. For the heart of the house, Martin designed the open-plan kitchen to showcase the Adams’ eclectic style, featuring two-toned cabinetry, a waterfall island countertop, open shelving, and counter-to-ceiling backsplash. Made for entertaining, the kitchen is fully equipped with a butler’s pantry, wine bar, and temperature-controlled wine room. The kitchen directly opens to the sunroom which features floor-toceiling windows that enclose the space and can disappear into the walls overlooking the outdoor terrace. “There’s quite an age gap between our daughters, so we wanted them to have their own space because they have totally different things going on. The common area upstairs works as a playroom for Rachel and as a hangout room for Lauren and her friends,” Kelly says. The top floor was given to the kids’ rooms. Following through with the idea that the home must be both functional and beautiful, the Adams

and Martin decided to transform a relatively wide hallway into a homework space that is adorned with blue wallpaper and custom built-in desks. For the Adams’ seven-year old daughter, Martin designed an ageappropriate, fun bedroom complete with a hanging swing; play table; and pastel-colored, fringed rug. The room is both minimal and playful featuring a variety of textures that perfectly complement the rest of the home. The oldest daughter’s bedroom features a floral print wallpaper to

create an accent wall and backdrop for the canopy bed. The details in this room include a brass floor mirror, feminine accents, and bold textures fit for a teenager. The backyard is an extension of the Adams’ home The covered porch creates a perfect oasis that’s fully equipped with an outdoor fireplace surrounded by patio furniture and a grilling prep area. Featuring a large pool with a hot tub and sand volleyball court, this space was intentionally designed for entertaining or year-round R&R.

The classic-modern marble bathroom features wood accents, black hardware, and stainedglass mosaic tile.

53

“Considering the project and what we took on, we did really good,” Kelly and Joel say. “We each naturally made decisions based on our strengths. We knew we were on the same page based off our inspiration photos and mood boards, so there was a level of trust between us and the team we hired.” For Joel and Kelly, building their home was a collaboration between the two of them and a team of experts. Although Joel’s experience in the industry added a wealth of knowledge to the process, the couple worked

together to build something truly meaningful for their family. “My advice to anyone planning a custom home build is to ‘measure, measure, measure, and then cut,’” Joel says. “Bring in an architect; if you’re planning for an integrated project, it’s a lot of forethought. Get a home designer, get your builder involved early, get your interior person involved early, and have all the details mapped out before you start construction. This will make the process go a lot smoother.”

and uniquely patterned tile floor give the home a modern feel while staying true to its simple origin and remaining functional.

No matter how big and vast a home might be, the kitchen is where memories are truly made. Its design is a reflection of culture, tradition, and personality. Whether it’s creating an open space to cook while entertaining guests, constructing a large island for the little ones to enjoy, or passing down a tradition through generations, a kitchen is more than just another room. It’s a space for families to express themselves while indulging in their favorites. These featured kitchens weren’t developed with only functionality in mind. They are intentional spaces for families to create memories through culture and design.

Minimal design doesn’t have to be boring. The Gross family’s subtle use of color and texture plays into the home’s Casita architectural style.

What vision did you have in mind when constructing your kitchen? How did you achieve it? Candace Gross: Our kitchen is minimalistic, modern, and bright. We wanted a modern kitchen design that fit with the Spanish aesthetic of our home that was also functional (as our family has recently grown). We incorporated elements from a Spanish design style,

like green cabinetry, a wrought-iron look for fixtures, wood shelving, geometric floor and wall tile, and reactive glaze stoneware from Portugal. To keep things functional, we designed the cabinets to include pull-out, soft-closing drawers, a hidden microwave, and customfit organizers. How did the home’s history tie in to your design plans? CG: Since our home is almost 100 years old, we wanted a space that kept the character of the home (like the wooden ceiling and wall paneling) but was a fresh and inviting space

to enjoy spending time with our family. What was one major factor that helped everything come together? CG: My dad was a huge help in renovating the kitchen. He managed the demo, did the electrical work, helped install the cabinets and kitchen hood, and so much more. We spent a few weeks working together on this project and made lots of memories along the way. During the demo, we even found an old Polaroid behind the kitchen cabinets of the previous owners!

SIMPLICITY & WARMTH Matt and Candace Gross’ kitchen is proof that minimal doesn’t have to be boring. While the home is a century-old staple, the green cabinets

several years ago and had to be rebuilt with a seamless transition that would appear as though it had always been there. I always prefer to set a formal stage in our home design, this kitchen being a prime example. Then life comes in, with all of its informality, and balances it out to a very welcoming atmosphere. What’s your favorite part of your kitchen? BM: Even though a kitchen often represents a work space, there is no reason why one can’t add lovely things that are often reserved for more posh rooms. No matter the room, it’s vital to me that there are a few things that are beautiful and a few humorous things to make

Brandi McLaughlin’s kitchen features a top-of-the line built-in island cooktop.

A HIGH-STYLE CLASSIC As Brandi McLaughlin says, you have to “give yourself permission to do something extra special in the rooms you do most of your work.” In her case, it’s the kitchen. While her home touts a classic design, McLaughlin insisted on the kitchen taking on a personality of its own, as it’s one of the most loved rooms in the house. How did the layout of your home influence your kitchen? Brandi McLaughlin: The classic design of our home dictated which direction we would go with our kitchen design. Throughout the house there already existed elaborate millwork and traditional formal spaces, which we fully embraced. The kitchen was taken down to the studs

people smile or laugh. Probably most important of all for me, it all simply must be thoroughly well-lit with incandescent lighting. Next to the “bones” of a space, lighting is everything! And, during the design phase, I insisted that it be absolutely flooded with light. What do you enjoy most about your kitchen? BM: With five teenagers in and out, along with their friends, every day is memories in the making. But, I will specifically say, my favorite is the really early mornings getting them off to school—a hot breakfast, packing lunches, dogs trying to steal bacon or pats of butter, feeding Swim Shady the fish, and double-checking the day’s activities’ list and tracking down a missing (dog theft) shoe. The kitchen is a beehive then and so much fun!

from Mexico and a variety of vintage pieces straight from my grandmother’s West Texas kitchen, this space honors my heritage. Was it important to have a kitchen that also reflects your lifestyle? SG: I love cooking, and my husband loves hosting. A wide-open kitchen that showcases our passion for food and welcomes our guests makes both cooking and hosting feel even more special. We’d love to spotlight our contractor, Vince Cotton. He’s a skilled builder, contractor, and woodworker who’s been doing this type of work for 35 years in

Lakeland. He worked on our various remodeling projects with such care, building our cabinets, shelves, and countertops by hand. I designed the overall look and picked the materials, and he brought it all to life. What’s your favorite memory that took place in your kitchen? SG: When my family visited from Texas in Christmas 2019, we hosted a party for them to meet our friends and neighbors. We cooked family favorites to share with our friends and gathered around the kitchen island for hours upon hours.

A CELEBRATION OF CULTURE The kitchen in the Gregg household proves that home is truly where the heart is. With Stephanie Gregg’s Tex-Mex culture shining through in bright, unique colors, her kitchen is more than just another space in their home. It was built with community in mind and sets the scene for unforgettable moments. Can you describe your kitchen in three words? I love everything that real estate is about, and I am dedicated to making myself the most educated realtor in the business. Growing up in Lakeland, I have an expanded knowledge of the area and want to pass this on to others. I would love to meet with you so we can discuss how I can best help you and your family.
