Your high-action, outdoor photography has become a staple in The Lakelander over the years. What draws you to this type of work? I love everything about this type of photography. I enjoy researching my subject or location, thinking through the technicalities, and then the unpredictable elements that nature can throw at you always add to the excitement. The fast pace and need for quick decision-making are a lot of fun as well. Your work has taken you far beyond Lakeland’s city limits. Tell us about a shoot you enjoyed traveling for. My church, Access Church, supports a missionary who works exclusively with the Maasai in Kenya, planting and building churches and training pastors. I have traveled
26
to Kenya with a few others from Access twice and documented both trips. Both times were completely unique experiences. The Maasai are the most genuinely kind people you would ever want to meet, and their way of life is so beautiful. The remoteness and vastness of the landscape are also incredible. What are your favorite outdoor activities? Surfing is at the top of my list, even though I don’t get over to the coast as often as I would like. I also love fishing and hiking with my wife and kids. From where do you draw inspiration for your photography? I’m a big fan of Jeff Johnson and Ben Moon. I love the authenticity of the moments and expressions they both capture.

The Art of a Dinner Party I

My dad was one of ten brothers and sisters, and my mom was one of four. For me, Christmas dinners, weddings, baptisms, birthdays, and celebrations with my family were big. Dinner parties of all kinds–– the type that took place around my grandparents’ formal dining rooms. Sometimes we had formal celebrations, and other times, we had a cocktail party or potlucks with disposable plates. Nonetheless, these memories of gathering around the table to celebrate life shaped my childhood. As time passed and I was of age to start hosting my own dinner parties, I realized that a festive dinner party is a combination of what is said and what is eaten. Yes, there was amazing food, the kind that was made with love and hours of preparation with those recipes passed down from one generation to the next. Presmart phones days––guests had real, raw, laughter-filled, engaged conversations. It was the kind where you didn’t pull out a phone to show a visual; instead, you found a way to tell the story and transport someone to relive that moment with you. This kind of dinner party is what I hope is passed down to future generations. The true art of gathering, choosing a theme or not, making it formal or casual, sitting back in a chair for hours with glimpses of each other’s lives floating over a table

More often than not the word party is not synonymous with introversion. In fact, many people would assume that introverts would much rather hide from the world at home alone when in reality that isn’t always the case. Introverts simply prefer to limit the amount of time they spend socializing. Being an introvert, however, shouldn’t exclude you from participating in or even hosting a holiday party -- especially if you’d really like to. Here are some ways to help you navigate hosting and celebrating this holiday season as an introvert. Setting boundaries is good for everyone, but for introverts, it helps them mentally and emotionally prepare for what is ahead. If you are hosting, ensure invitations have the proper start and end time according to your ability to handle socializing. Then think about the party’s structure and create a schedule to ensure you know what is happening next and
reduce any possible anxiety. As a host of a dinner party, having a comprehensive understanding of the group of people you are putting around a table is important, there’s room for everyone, and the more diversity in personalities the better. The reason being is everyone can feel comfortable to be themselves without having to pretend to be something they are not. This doesn’t mean you can’t invite a new neighbor you barely know, it just means that having a good balance between knowing what personalities to expect with unexpected ones is a good idea. Comparison is the thief of joy, even in this situation. Don’t try to be someone you are not. Just because your friends thrive in social gatherings and feel energized by them doesn’t mean you have to be. If you know you are hosting an event

or planning to attend one, clear your calendar for some alone time to energize. It’s about managing your energy and recognizing in yourself when you’re starting to get overextended and drained Talk to your best friend about cohosting with you. If you need to take a break and step out to grab some air, have someone ready to take your place as the host. This can help clear your head and re-energize you a bit. In addition, if this is a formal dinner party, sit near an exit for minimal distraction and attention. When attending a gathering or dinner party as an introvert these same concepts can be applied to help you navigate having a good time, choose wisely where you want to spend your energy and only commit to the gatherings that are truly meaningful to you. If the host is a friend, chances are they care about you and will accept your decision to not attend with empathy. If the host is not a close friend a polite rejection to the invite should be more plenty. To wrap it all up just remember that you do not have to be the life of the party, and you have no obligation to entertain anyone. Sit by people who can party at your pace, have enough conversation with you and not draw unwanted attention. Remember, everyone is different, and every introvert and extrovert are different so make sure you are listening to your body and emotions.

Swish and the Lakeland Magic Return The Lakeland Magic, the NBA G-League developmental affiliate of NBA’s Orlando Magic, return for a brand new season of basketball with their home opener on Friday, November 5th. The Lakeland Magic are returning this season as G-League champions of the 2020-2021 season, after defeating the Delaware Blue Coats at the end of last season. In May of last year, Mayor Bill Mutz officially recognized March 11, the day the Magic won the league title as Lakeland Magic 2021 NBA G-League Champions Day.

In addition, the Lakeland Magic will begin the season with new head coach Joe Barrer, officially announced in August of this year. Barrer is only the second head coach in franchise history after spending the last four seasons with the Lakeland Magic as an assistant coach with the team. Last year, the Lakeland Magic offered multiple
themed nights for fans to come out and enjoy during the season. Some of the themes included were “Home for the Holidays”, “Hoops for a Cure”, “Faith and Family Night,” and “Black History Celebration”. This year, as returning champions, fans can expect multiple giveaways and themed nights during the 2021-2022 season. When it comes down to it, nobody aspires to be a bad house guest. Nobody wakes up in a friend or family member’s home with the desire to be the topic of conversation after leaving. Unfortunately, these experiences do happen, but they don’t have to, at least not this holiday season. to work something out. When it comes to the etiquette of your day-to-day life during your stay, there are a few things you can do to be a good guest. The small stuff like making your bed, picking up after yourself, and leaving the bathroom clean will all contribute to a good guest experience for you and your host. But there are a few other things you might want to consider while being a house guest this holiday season. This one might seem obvious, but try to limit your phone usage while being a house guest. An excessive amount of screentime in front of your host can give the impression that you’re not enjoying yourself. Put down the phone for a bit, and engage in intentional faceto-face time. Your phone will be there when you head to your room at the end of the night. Next, offer to pitch in. Some
hosts don’t like to make their guests do the dishes or help in the kitchen at all, but offering to help can show that you are genuinely grateful for their hospitality. It can also show that you’re not there to have someone wait on you. After all, this is a home––not a hotel. Even if they don’t accept your offer, simply asking goes a long way in showing your appreciation. Offer to pitch in, even if it’s something as quick as taking out the trash. Remember, communication is always key! Being a good houseguest boils down to figuring out the details and setting the expectations for your trip with your host ahead of time. Like any relationship, the one between guest and host thrives on communication. Speak with your host ahead of time and save the both of you any of the trouble this holiday season.

There are a handful of basic truths in life that we should always remember. And somewhere, deep in the middle of that pile of truths is this one: never underestimate what some good craft coffee can do for a city.
In
2017, Meghan and Stewart Mackie opened The Bike Shop in Winter Haven, a shop for cyclists that also featured a café inside that they called N+1. “We really wanted to have a craft coffee bar inside,” said owner Meghan Mackie. “And at the time, the only other coffee shops in town were Richards and Starbucks. So we really wanted to bring craft coffee to the shop while featuring local roasters.” After finding some mild success with N+1 while it was located inside The Bike Shop, the Mackie’s realized they wanted more for their craft coffee dreams, and for N+1. “The coffee shop didn’t kick off as much with the public

while being in The Bike Shop. But my husband and I always knew we wanted more from it. I think it may have been an intimidating experience to walk through all of the bikes looking for coffee when you’re not a cyclist - and you’re thinking, ‘where am I?’” Naturally, when the Mackie’s heard the company next door to The Bike Shop was planning on moving out, they jumped on the opportunity to take this growing café concept of theirs, and give it its own space to grow. Today, four years later, N+1 takes up the corner building directly next to The Bike Shop. Now carrying itself with a space of its own, N+1 is full of regulars, serving them with coffee from local roasters such as Ethos and Patriot. N+1 is supporting the local community, and the community is giving that support right back, which is all that the Mackie’s have dreamt of. “Our goal is really to make sure people feel comfortable,” said café manager, Danni Demalignon. “We want people to come back and see the same people behind the counter. It’s nice to see the same faces and learn who they are. And the same goes for our baristas behind the counter. We love seeing our regulars.” SIT BACK AND SIP THE C OFFE E In addition to the overall inviting atmosphere, N+1 features a record player and vinyls to spin your favorite tunes and perhaps order one more cup.

That kind of consistency is something N+1 offers that you might not get from other cafés. And while you’ll obtain that comfortable feeling from both the baristas and the atmosphere, you’ll also get it from the menu. “One of my favorite things I’ve heard from a customer is that drinking our vanilla spice latte is like taking a walk through Home Goods,” said Demalignon. “I smiled. That was a new one.” Inside the café, N+1 is full of life. It’s full of all their regulars coming in and ordering their morning drinks. It’s full of all the many plants and greenery that find themselves in every corner of the shop, always in sight. It’s full of a special kind of morning sun that seems to paint itself over the entire interior. It feels relaxed, which was always the plan. “I just wanted it to be kind of cozy and homey,” said Mackie. “I love greenery, so I knew I wanted to add a lot of live plants. I wanted it to be a cozy corner, and for people
to feel comfortable here. I wanted it to be a place where you actually want to sit for a while and hang out.” Admittedly, the biggest question I had while sitting down with Meghan and her shop manager, Danni Demalignon, was about the name. Where does a name like N+1 come from? An interesting formula to put on the storefront, Meghan had a simple explanation. “My husband Stewart and his buddy have this silly book they own of unwritten rules for cyclists.” explained Mackie. “And so, one of the rules states that the correct number of bikes to own is N+1. Pretty much saying that you always want to have one more. We thought that was pretty cool and connected the coffee bar back to the bike shop, so we named it N+1. I think N+1 makes so much sense with coffee as well because you always want just one more. So that’s where the name comes from.”

And it’s true, you do always want one more. Maybe that’s because the coffee is so good, or because coffee shops just have a way of bringing you in and keeping you there. Whether you’re sitting down for a conversation with a friend or sitting down with a book and some headphones seeking some alone time, coffee shops are not just staples, but pillars of our communities. They are where we start and sometimes even end our days, connecting communities and the people within them. They are atmospheric moments

During the uncertain times in 2020, Saunders worked hard to make sure she maintained reliable employment for her close-knit staff, despite the challenges that the pandemic ensued. In an effort to pivot, they placed focus on their online platform. Though times became very testing for many, Saunders admits “gift-giving never stopped.” The support of local and returning customers continues to be unwavering. And undoubtedly, the quality of curated gifts shows thoughtfulness in their selection. But something that will always set this historic shop apart from the rest is their people-focused customer experience. “That drives who we are at the core of our business… Our customer service goes above and beyond to truly know our customers,” explains Saunders. SET THE BEDSIDE TABLE Part of the charm of a great guest room is thinking ahead and being intentional about your guests needs. Provide a wireless phone charger, because we’ve all forgotten to pack one a time or two. Provide a wifi password, before they even ask. They might have multiple devices they need to connect so writing it down for them is best. If you’re feeling extra fancy, leave a carafe filled with filtered water and a drinking glass or two. And, for a decorative touch, have a vase with fresh or dried flowers. My local favorites are from Uli & Co. or Bloom Shakalaka.

LIGHTING To create a cozy and relaxed vibe, proper lighting is key. Again, it’s about options and a personalized experience. Lamps on nightstands are a must. No one wants to wake up and walk around in the dark to find a light switch. If you have the option, ceiling lights on a dimmer switch, and a night light can be a nice touch. THE WINDOWS From decorative curtains to roller blinds, an option to black out the room is important. Some people need a completely dark room to get a good night’s sleep. For a more simple solution, provide your guests with an eye mask. SEATING AREA If the bedroom has the space, a reading chair is a good choice. Whether it’s taking a call, putting on shoes, or reading the recent issue of The Lakelander, a seating option is a nice touch.

mily Waters, one of Lakeland’s expert tabletop designers and owner of Treasury Rentals - a dishware and tabletop rental studio believes that there’s room at the table for everyone’s dinner party style. The dinner party isn’t a modern invention; it has ancient roots, going as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held massive feasts with dozens of guests. In fact, people have gathered together over food for centuries, and the dinner party has evolved time and time again throughout history. Consider the Victorians and their elaborate tableware, from silverware (made out of silver),

specialty glassware, variety in dishes, spoons, and forks for every course and food - the Victorians established the tone for elaborate and opulent dinner parties. Then, by the mid-century period, as the post-war economy boomed and the middle class grew, it became common for people to entertain guests in their homes. The period’s prosperity and housewives theme brought forth the idea of glamorous dinner parties at home, such as the ones you’d see in a scene from the Netflix series, “Mad Men.” Over the past decade or so, we’ve been on an upward trend of becoming a more casual society with each generation that comes of age. Some people prefer
oversized bathrooms and closets over formal living and dining rooms, wearing jeans to the office is normal, and engaged couples no longer typically include china on their wedding registries. This new way of living doesn’t mean that the tradition of dinner parties is long-gone, it just means that we’ve entered a new era. While some of us would opt for a classic traditional place setting with all of the glasses and coupes, others may decide on a more informal approach. Treasury Rentals is a Lakeland-based tabletop rental company that features an eclectic collection mixing vintage pieces with a modern design. Since 2013, Emily has shared her love

for gatherings, special meals and celebrations through Treasury Rentals. Her passion for beautiful china and perfectly set tables was passed down from Emily’s grandmother, Bettie Lou. For Emily, dressing a table is both an art form and a tradition to be passed down from one generation to the next. “Growing up, the table was always properly set. It didn’t matter if the dishes were china or disposable, if it

was a home-cooked meal or McDonald’s, we set the table every night,” says Emily. Like most businesses, Treasury Rentals has added new collections and altered their service offerings over the years to fit the needs of their customers and industry trends. With this in mind, the Water’s are excited to announce the upcoming launch of “Treasury at-Home”, a unique service that will only add to their continued
mission in “making gatherings beautiful and accessible for all”. The first of its kind in Lakeland, “Treasury at Home” is a rental kit that will allow customers to rent as little as 4, 8, and 12+ place settings for gatherings of all types. THE LINENS Most traditional linens include a version of an ironed white linen tablecloth that covers the full table, but you could also

use a table runner or individual placemats at each setting to vary the look of your table and transition from formal to casual, or show off a particularly beautiful table if you prefer. “For a table runner, it depends on the shape of your table. I would never really suggest a table runner on a round table, but for a long table, a table runner would be a really nice compliment. For an oval table, it’s going to be according to an

individual’s preference and then whether or not there is a practical purpose behind having the table runner in place to protect the table”, explains Emily. THE CENTERPIECES For centerpieces, flowers are the classic staple and can vary in height and size depending on your approach to the evening and the table size available. “Are you planning on the centerpiece

remaining in the center of the table or are you moving it to the buffet after guests sit down?”, asks Emily. Answering this question will help you plan accordingly and decide whether you can have full creative freedom or design in a way that meets the needs of guests and their ability to interact with one another during dinner. “One of the most important details is being mindful of the use of space and scale.

Depending on the number of courses you’re serving, you’ll need different plates and bowls, but a traditionally set the table (before dinner service begins) will have a charger, dinner plate, bread plate, and either a salad plate or soup bowl. Plates will be stacked in that order, except for the bread plate, which should be placed at the top-left corner of each place setting. “Chargers tend to take up a lot of
space and aren’t really meant for regular-sized tables so most of our “Treasury at Home” kit options will only include dinner plates, salad plates, bread plates, and then you can opt for a duplicate dessert plate if you would like. The option to include a charger is available if you were to need it.”, says Emily. Overall, the place setting is swayed by the style of the meal (number of courses) and desired formality of the table.

As major motion pictures continue to be released both in theatres and on streaming services, there has never been a better time to step up your movie watch party game.

Movies like The Matrix: Resurrections, Don’t Look Up, and King Richard are amongst some of the films being released on streaming services this holiday season
1905, John P. Harris and Harry Davis opened a five-centsadmission movie theatre in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. By 1914, an estimated 27 percent of Americans were going to the movies every week. Since then, going to the movies has been a part of our culture for as long as movies have existed. We go as kids, as families, as teenagers, and as adults. We go nervous on a first date and on opening night with our closest friends. Going to the movies is as American as baseball, and like anything else, it’s a process that has evolved over time. Given the circumstances of the last few years surrounding the pandemic, that evolutionary process has been sped up and forced the movie-going process to change. Maybe forever. In late 2020, Warner Brothers announced that every 2021 movie would be launched simultaneously in theatres, as well as, HBO Max. Before this, there had never been a way to watch theatrical releases at home. Watching exclusive theatrical releases at home was a very exclusive and very rare accommodation, known only to the most connected and most affluent. Now that’s entirely changed. Similar to Warner Bros.––Disney announced something called “Premier Access” for Disney Plus, allowing you to pay a onetime $30 fee on top of your subscription that allows you to watch a movie from the comfort of your own home while it’s still playing in theatres. Paramount, Amazon, Netflix, and other companies have all focused heavily

on streaming releases for major motion pictures during this time. And it wasn’t all met with peace and understanding. Director Christopher Nolan, famed director of The Dark Knight and Interstellar, announced that he was extremely disappointed by the move from Warner Bros. to co-release all of their theatrical releases on HBO Max and has since left the studio for Universal Pictures after nearly 20 years of work together. “Some of our industry’s biggest filmmakers and most important movie stars went to bed the night before thinking they were working for the greatest movie studio and woke up to find out they were working for the worst streaming service,” said Nolan (Hollywood Reporter, Dec. 7,2020), a fierce defender of the importance of the theatrical experience. While I agree with Nolan— the theatrical experience is irreplaceable and vastly integral to the process of consuming the art form of film; I do think there is a middle ground here. There has to be because the movies have already changed, maybe forever. Now it’s just a matter of if we are willing to change and evolve with it. While this is all new territory for creatives and financial heads within the film industry, the accessibility to newly released films has seriously upped the potential for your greatest movie nights at home. With new releases coming to our living rooms for the first time in the hundred-plus-year movie-going history, the pressure for your movie-watch parties is on. Try not to sweat it though, I think

I’ve figured it out. Here are all the different ways people are watching movies in their homes, and how you can find the best experience for you and your friends. Looking to make memories that last a lifetime? Consider a dive-in movie experience in the pool. Just grab a swimsuit and your favorite pool floaty and let the night be the envy of your neighbors. This is one of those movie experiences you won’t have all of the time, but once or twice a year to mix things up every now and then isn’t bad at all. I’m a fan of the dive-in experience due to the level of comfort and pure comradery you feel while watching movies in the comfort of your own pool/ backyard with a group of friends. Movie
watching has always been an experience, and the pool just brings that experience to a new level— one that’s drenched in moonlight and good vibes. To pull off a movie night like this one, you’ll need: • Projector • Speakers • Large blank wall or large white sheet • Laptop or Apple TV If you can scavenge those four things either yourself or maybe with the help of some friends, you’re in for a movie night destined to be photographed. Just wait for the sun to go down, and you’ll be good to go. The good news is, projectors have gone down in price quite a bit over the years, so if you’re in the market for a decent one
