Celebrating Our City’s Entrepreneuial Spirit I recently thought about some of my favorite brands and products, those with history and those which I recently discovered while scrolling through Instagram. I paused and reflected on how all these businesses begin with an entrepreneurial spirit. Then they create cultures within them that embrace entrepreneurial mindsets and values to encourage innovation and propel the company forward. In this issue of “The Lakelander”, we welcome incredible homegrown businesses that enlarge our identity as a community, add to our experiences, and change the way we eat, shop, work, and live as a city. The Lakelander proudly presents its 6th Annual Lakelander Made issue to celebrate these artists and entrepreneurs. In this special edition, we celebrate and champion local entrepreneurs behind products and businesses beloved by our community. Each of these stories is unique and personal, with roadblocks, hardships, and problem-solving skills that fully tell the story of success and entrepreneurship. From Home Decor & Design to Taste and Technology, these creators

C O N T R I B U T O R S THE WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT MAKE THE LAKELANDER
SALLY IBARRA BARCELÓ Through a variety of creative career experiences including news anchoring, Sally Barceló developed a passion for digital marketing. She uses her creative eye and knowledge in video, photography, and journalism to increase brand affinity by creating inspiring content, developing strategies, and launching campaigns as The Lakelander’s digital marketing director.
“Soaring to New Heights” written by Jordan Randall, pg. 74
JORDAN RANDALL ordan Randall is a 26-year-old freelance photographer/writer from Upstate New York and a recent graphic design graduate from Southeastern University. In his career, Jordan has photographed Sadie Robertson, Bastille, and Andy Grammer, amongst others. He also maintains a passion for film and pop culture, contributing pieces on these to The Lakelander and on his own platform, @watchwhatyoucan.
How did you first get into photography? I started selling shirts that I designed in college and needed better photos for the website, so I used the money I made from the shirts to buy a decent camera. Then I ended up liking the photo thing more than the shirt thing, and now I’m here. You’ve contributed numerous articles for The Lakelander. What has been your favorite article to write to date? The piece on Stranger Things I wrote back in July 2019 for Season 3 was really fun. I really connect with those characters, and the story they’ve been telling for three seasons now, so it was sort of cathartic to write about those heroes in Hawkins.

Tell us a bit about your photography, and favorite projects you’ve worked on. I think a lot of my work is observational. I never try to make anything feel too posed. If it feels too stiff or “on purpose” I’m immediately turned off by it. Between my portraiture, editorial, or fashion photography, I try to make sure it all feels organic, like maybe you entered a moment that wasn’t for you, but now you feel welcome in it. Stumbling into work that quietly or easily connects with you is one of the best feelings. I guess I want everyone to be able to have that experience with my work. Top five 2020-2021 movies. Go! meaningful products and experiences are often the ones who thrive. Entrepreneurs tirelessly give up immediate gratification for long-term fulfillment. They run the race slow and steady working hard towards an end goal to create masterpieces. Successful entrepreneurs figure out how to do what they love and build systems that work towards sustainable models and end goals. They utilize people’s efforts, surrounding resources, and technology. Building a life around your passion and values to wake up doing what you love and generate a profit is no easy feat but rewarding. We celebrate Lakeland’s makers and entrepreneurs, no matter the size of their dreams for their businesses. These entrepreneurs add value to our city. They contribute to a culture that embraces innovation and a good work ethic. They inspire others to do the same.

Set In Stone Riko Ramos has made a name for himself in the home renovation and interior design industry by creating beautiful and functional works of art. Written by Adam Spafford Photography by Jason Stephens

akelander Riko Ramos’ inspiring professional story – from corporate burnout to building a decorative concrete business that’s absolutely on fire – is perhaps overshadowed only by the stunning work he produces on concrete floors, countertops, and walls. No Boring Concrete’s beautiful and functional surfaces have been featured on HGTV and span backyard patios to enormous commercial applications. We caught up with this talented Lakelander Maker recently (on a jobsite, of course!). The Lakelander: What’s your entrepreneurial story? Riko Ramos: Until about twelve years ago, I worked in the corporate world in New

York – in sales and marketing and just got burned out. I didn’t realize burnout was a common thing - I just felt like I’d failed and let everyone down. But then, a former coworker told me that her boyfriend – a remodeler and house-flipper - needed help. She recommended me to him with the understanding that I could do that type of work until I got my resume out and found another job. At that point, I hadn’t done any kind of construction work. But I was a quick learner, and soon I was flipping homes myself. When the Great Recession hit, I began my own remodeling business. One day I got a call from a person who asked if I could do decorative concrete. I said,

“Sure!” but I wasn’t sure – so I had to figure it out quickly! As I did so, I became intrigued with it. Then I landed a big job and started installing decorative concrete in hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, even a fashion show runway for fashion week. Then about eight years ago, my wife and I had twin girls, and we decided to move back here to Lakeland, where our family lives. I had to start all over – I did odds and ends jobs
at night while building my decorative concrete business during the day. It’s been a lot of hard work, of course. But now, I’ve completed twelve episodes and two seasons on HGTV DIY Network. We’re also doing all of the outdoor countertops for the Lucas Lagoons Insane Pools TV show, and not that long ago, I was a Walmart distribution center employee, but right now, I’m talking to you outside; a

Walmart distribution center on my own job site! So it’s just blown up, and I’m just grateful. TL: Were you creative growing up? What’s the inspiration for your work? RR: I’ve always loved design. When my wife and I travel, we visit the affluent neighborhoods not because we’re enamored of the idea of a big, fancy house but because we are inspired by modern elements, the combinations of different textures and materials that you don’t always see, the lighting, the landscaping. My wife has an excellent eye for design; when I was flipping houses, she staged homes to make them look great. I’m also inspired by hiphop music, combined with fashion, design, home décor, and architecture – I was always intrigued by these things but didn’t know how to do any of them! When I

learned decorative concrete, I saw many opportunities to apply these interests. It was inspiring to me, whether it was epoxy, concrete, or a combination with elements like wood, metal, or plastic. Sometimes I don’t think of what I do as artistic – maybe because I don’t paint or draw, for instance – but others have pointed out that it is creative and artistic and concrete is just my medium – so I’ll take it! What do you love about the unusual combination of functional and

artistic in your work? Well, it’s interesting you bring that up because I’ve felt like I’ve been trying to create my own lane for a while! It seems I’m too “artsy” for the construction world and too “construction-y” for the art world. What I’ve finally realized is that I offer functional art. It’s artistic and creative, but often you can literally live on it daily – an epoxy floor, for instance, or a custom dining table. You can touch it, drive on it – it’s not a delicate piece that’s framed

or behind glass and can’t be used for another purpose. TL: How have Lakelanders Supported the Growth of No Boring Concrete? RR: At first, I found Central Florida wasn’t as interested in decorative concrete as metropolitan New York. I heard the generalized question, “Why does concrete need to be decorative – why can’t it be plain grey?” It wasn’t clear why someone would want to dress up plain concrete. So I sought jobs more in Tampa and Orlando, and even Miami. But I made inroads by making decorative concrete practical. For example: demoing a slab and repouring it would be more expensive and invasive – sod, irrigation, permitting – than when I show up and resurface it, making it look new and decorative. And all I brought was a drill and a 5-gallon bucket! Now, we have expanded to the point where we will repour a slab if needed and install pavers, fireplaces,
fire pits, outdoor living spaces, and water features – but often, we can simply resurface a floor or floor wall. TL: What’s next for you and No Boring Concrete? RR: We’ll be opening up a showroom on S. Florida in the plaza near Panera Bread in late Spring 2022. You’ll be able to see and feel our epoxy floors, outdoor fireplace features, floating concrete, indoor and outdoor kitchens – all the things we create. And we’ll have a small fabrication shop in the back. TL: How can readers see your work? RR: The most up-todate pictures are videos on social media – Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube. I have tons of content ready to be uploaded, too. I am so grateful for every job because I know people don’t necessarily need decorative concrete. I’m only as good as my last job, so I strive to deliver a quality product every time. I’m glad I get to wake up and do what I do.

From Farm to Filter T
he popularity of coffee has served as a grand unifier around the world. Many of us need it in the mornings, and many of us find it to be the one common denominator across some of our best conversations and evenings with friends. The modernization of coffee and its unique forms have helped form social ambiances across the globe. Coffee makes vital contributions to a city’s culture because, simply put, it is one of the most beloved drinks in the world. And while we all enjoy our morning cup, it’s not often that we think about the farmers who grew the coffee beans that helped make the drink in our hands. Ethos Roasters in Lakeland, Florida, is out to change that. Lisbeth Pacheco and her husband Julian Rios started Ethos Roasters in 2016, almost immediately upon arriving in Lakeland. They met at school in Gainesville, Florida, in 2005 while Lisbeth was getting

her master’s in nutrition and food science, while Julian was getting his undergrad in microbiology. “I grew up in Guatemala, and he grew up in Colombia,” says Lisbeth. “Julian grew up in Colombia’s main coffee growing regions. So his hometown is surrounded with mountains full of coffee.” After some moving around postgraduation from the University of Florida, Lisabeth and Julian found their way back to Florida, ready to start Ethos. “Before coming to Lakeland, we went to a few coffee conferences trying to network with people in the industry. I suppose my little advantage was that we actually came from coffee-growing countries. So I already knew a lot of the people that brew coffee or work with the cooperatives.” There’s energy alive in Lakeland that seems to constantly be reaching out and clinging to the arms of entrepreneurs. With Ethos, Lisbeth

says Lakeland had her heart at first glance. “Since the very first time we visited Lakeland, everything was just right,” says Lisbeth. “Everything just clicked. We came to the Saturday morning farmers market during our first time in Lakeland, and I just fell in love with the city that day. I was like, “Yes, I’m going to be a vendor here.” And they have been ever since. Today, you can find Lisbeth and Ethos at the farmer’s market every Saturday morning, ready to offer the people of Lakeland some of the best coffee in the state of Florida. And ever since Lisbeth and Julian started to dream about selling their coffee, they always wanted to do it with a larger purpose in mind. “Ever since the very first time that we met, I think we both connected over a desire to at some point in our lives do something for the people that we kind of left behind, you know?” Ethos exists to make sure you get the best quality coffee out of high-quality coffee beans
66
and, perhaps most importantly, to ensure the farmers get paid a fair, livable wage, one that can be life-changing for their suppliers. “Our belief has always been that we can transform the lives of small farmers through better coffee prices,” says Lisbeth. “So, subsequently, our mission with Ethos is to champion the best prices possible, which we call “life-changing prices,” for small farmers. By doing business with small farmers, you can impact their lives in a very profound way if you are able to pay them better for their product because they only get paid for the product itself. They don’t get paid any extra for their time or their work directly.” Ethos has stayed true to its mission, providing all of its small farmer suppliers with better prices for their coffee. Even when it
may have been tempting to take their business to a larger farm or supplier, Lisbeth and Julian have stayed true to what they set out to do. “We work exclusively with small farmers,” says Lisbeth. “So we won’t ever buy coffee from a large farm, even if it’s amazing coffee. And it is a hard decision to make sometimes because you might have a very delicious, very outstanding coffee with an attractive price, but it just doesn’t support our mission.” In the beginning (circa 2016), Ethos was such a small operation that Lisbeth and Julian traveled with their coffee back from Guatemala in their luggage. “Today, we ship everything.” Now, Lisbeth says that they routinely order pallets of coffee from Guatemala, with about 700 kilos of coffee per pallet (about 1500 pounds). This is a direct result of

67
Ethos’ efforts to pay their farmers the best prices possible. And as Ethos has grown in popularity, so has Lisbeth and Julian’s ability to order higher quantities of coffee from their farmers. “These farmers have grown a lot in their capabilities, and a lot of that has come from their personal efforts,” says Lisbeth. Ethos’s mission is vital to the farmers. It provides them with the tools necessary to invest back into their farms by having profitability proof they need to approach banks. Running a business is already a leap of faith, but a company that set out to make this kind of change in a coffee market valued at over 100 billion dollars worldwide requires a few extra leaps. For example, Ethos pays their farmers half of
68
the money, sometimes nine months in advance, nine months before they’ll ever see any coffee, to ensure that their farmers can cover all of their expenses during the harvest. A leap of faith, for sure. But one that produces strong ties between Ethos and their farmers after six years of doing business together. If you were to visit the Ethos website, you would read about how Lisbeth and Julian have a vision for Ethos to create a future where no child has to sacrifice school for a life in the coffee farms to help their parents feed their siblings. Lisbeth says this vision goes back to when she was a kid growing up in Guatemala. “I would have to trace it back to my childhood. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a family that had enough. Both of my

parents are physicians, and we always had something to eat. But growing up in Guatemala, I was surrounded by kids who didn’t have anything. You see them in the streets. I remember seeing all these children, and I never forgot the images of these kids trapped in poverty. These kids don’t have enough money or the privilege to ever go to school. I loved school, and the thought of children not attending school because they have to work is terrible. I always knew that one day, I wanted to help.” The truth is, and it’s not an exaggeration to say, that Ethos’s impact isn’t just felt in Lakeland. It is quite literally felt around the world. right here in central Florida. And while Ethos is one of the best in the business to focus on ethically sourced coffee, they’re not alone. Lisbeth encourages coffee lovers everywhere to jump in on ethically sourced coffee. “I would suggest; look for the smaller players. We’re not the only ones working directly with the farmers, but we’re certainly one of them. Look for transparency. I think a lot of the time, transparency is very powerful. If somebody can tell you exactly who the farmer is or how much money that farmer gets paid, that’s probably a roaster you should support. Honestly, it is a big, big deal to know the facts. Most people won’t reveal the cost of their beans from farmer to roaster, and there’s a reason for that.”

Soaring to New Heights Local entrepreneur, Rut Patel is transforming the future of aerial engineering. Written by Jordan Randall | Photography by Dan Austin
S
ix years. Six years is all it took for Rut Patel to go from Dairy Queen to CEO of Voyager Inc. After a staggering 18 yearwait for Visa approval, Patel and his parents immigrated to the United States in 2015. “I started working before I was even over my jetlag from my trip,” says Patel. “April 7th, 2015 was my first day in America. I went to my Uncle’s house, who lives in Lakeland, and he told me I needed to find work. He told me that one of his friends owned a Dairy Queen, so he took me there to check it out and gave me a job. I didn’t speak English and couldn’t serve customers, so I mostly cleaned. But my goal was to learn English.”
I SS U E 7 1
Eventually, after some help from his co-workers and a strong focus on what he wanted, Patel learned English well enough to take drive-through orders. Patel was determined to take what most people would deem a temporary, not ideal situation and leverage it into opportunity. “I wanted to take orders and talk to people,” says Patel, “because I wanted to achieve something at Dairy Queen. I wasn’t just cleaning; I also talked to people and learned English to move forward in life. I started copying co-workers and what they were saying. I would write down what they said and take orders in the drive-through. Eventually, I spoke well enough that I was able to take orders at the front of the store.”
75
“I was much more into learning the technology. I would break open things and see how they worked. Patel started taking ESL (English second language) at Polk State College, but he dropped out after only a month of classes. “I did one month of ESL and quickly realized I was learning way more at Dairy Queen than in class. At that point, the classes were stopping me from making money, so I quit the classes.” In fact, school was never really Patel’s thing. “I failed engineering school when I was in India. And not just engineering, but pretty much every exam since the sixth grade. I didn’t care enough to open a book. I wanted to be an engineer without studying it in school, so I figured out how to do just that. Voyager Inc, Patel’s Lakelandbased tech company, is an
76
engineering company that uses drones and artificial intelligence to create solutions for energy, agriculture, and infrastructure industries. Voyager has grown significantly in the last four years since Patel started in 2017. Today, Voyager Inc. has a handful of fulltime employees and contracts in 25 different states throughout the country. But the groundwork for Voyager Inc was laid by Patel years ago, all the way back home in India. Before immigrating to America, Patel attended engineering school and failed every subject. Patel wasn’t failing in school because he wasn’t smart but because he would rather study through hands-on experiences instead of sitting

around doing book-work. “I was much more into learning the technology. I would break open things and see how they worked. “I’ve always been fascinated with things that can fly. I’ve always been into technology,” says Patel. I would crack open things and see how they work. And I’ve always been fascinated with something that can fly. While in India, Patel made a drone by collecting different parts, and soon after, he was elected as one of India’s top 40 innovators. Once Patel’s visa was approved, he left everything behind. During his time at Dairy Queen, his goal was to save money and build another drone. Two years later, he reached his goal and launched his business. Voyager Inc uses drones to collect, process, and analyze data
in real-time. Some examples include using drones to inspect powerlines. This method reduces safety risks and increases the speed and accuracy of the results. Voyager is doing years of work in only a month and gives 60% more data to the companies they work with. “Let’s say you’re a farmer and you own a blueberry farm in South Florida,” says Patel. “You’re spending $100,000 in fertilizer every year, which is a lot. I come in, and I say, “Hey, you are spending $100,000 in fertilizer because you’re spraying all over the farm.” So we’ll come to your site, and we’ll use our drones, our AI, and our sensors to collect data. And our data will give you specific information, so you’re not spraying all over the farm. You’ll be able to see exactly where you need to spray and how much
I SS U E 7 1
you need to spray. It will save you hundreds of thousands of dollars each year just by using the data we collect. That’s what we do.” Simply put, Voyager is in the problem-solving business. “If the technology does not exist, we create it to solve a company’s problem. That’s what Voyager does,” says Patel. One of the ways Voyager Inc solves its problems is by creating its technology and building its drones. “We are planning on moving Voyager into an American-based manufacturing company. That’s where I want to take Voyager- to create specialty drones that solve specific kinds of problems. The Drone we are working on right now is a drone that goes 250 miles per hour and is intended to fly only once. For example, if you want to penetrate a hurricane, it

only flies once, and then it crashes. But before it crashes, it gives you all of the data that you need about it. That’s what we are working towards at Voyager.” Patel also notes that the current laws don’t even permit a drone to fly as fast as the one they are developing at Voyager, which would be unprecedented in drone technology and capabilities. The fastest Drone in the world is currently the DRL Racer X and has only reached 179.78 miles per hour. “It’s not legal to fly a drone that fast,” says Patel. “The law is 100 miles per hour. But we are innovating beyond the rules right now. I care about the rules, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t care about them when it comes to innovation. The rules will always catch up with innovation.” Innovation has been a part of Patel’s story from the beginning. Knowing that he wasn’t keen on school or studying, he knew he would have to innovate and do his own thing if he wanted to succeed. Patel, simply put, realized his future was in his own hands. “I have always been told my entire life that I’m not going to
I SS U E 7 1
do anything because I failed my exams, and that’s how the world judges you. Whenever I failed an exam, that’s when I would say to myself, “It’s okay that you failed. I know you’re not dumb. I know you can do this.” So I decided to start my own engineering company.” As grand as all of the ambitions might be for Voyager Inc, Patel still sees Lakeland as the perfect home away from home (his first home, of course, being India). “I work all over America, but I always come back to Lakeland. Because people are amazing in Lakeland, I could not move away.” So while it seems like Patel and Voyager Inc will stick around in Lakeland for the foreseeable future, they will certainly continue to innovate and push boundaries in the energy, agriculture, and infrastructure industries. “I don’t want to just be an influencer in this industry,” says Patel. “I want to be the leader that leads the way in this industry. I want to solve problems and show everyone that there are other ways to do things and new ways to solve old problems.”

Centered around each customer’s experience, Marc Nelson Denim is a smallbatch craft denim brand that also specializes in custom suiting. “I learned to appreciate dressing well from my greatgrandfather. He was a true gentleman, a provider, a holy man, and an amazing dresser. He taught my oldest brother and me that you always want to leave the house looking like a million bucks no matter who you are- the janitor or the mayor. From grade school until this day, I have taken his advice to heart.” Marc Nelson Denim was founded in 2011 by Marcus Hall, who grew up near the old Levi’s factory on Cherry Street in Knoxville, TN, where his family and friends were once employed. Denim has long been a fabric that helped shape his life and the lives of those around him. With a desire to restore jobs lost in the off-shoring of the

American Denim industry, Hall and the Marc Nelson Denim team has a vision for instilling the same sense of pride Knoxville once felt. Well on Hall’s way to doing what he set out to do, by 2015, he was honored in the community as an entrepreneurial leader and role model. In May of that year, he was presented with the Pinnacle MinorityOwned Business Excellence Award from the Chamber of Commerce - one of the city’s highest honors. Knoxville celebrated Marcus Hall and his accomplishments, but Hall led a second life behind closed doors that would soon come to light and turn his life upside down while jeopardizing his life’s work. In 2009 Hall started the gambling operation called “the numbers.” He and two

others would take bets on the daily drawings of the Illinois Lottery, pulling in as much as $90,000 a week. In his prime, Hall sported four cars and dozens of properties. “The money was impossible to walk away from, and I was addicted to the adrenaline rush. I’d grown up struggling to find my next meal or clothes to wear to school. Now I had enough “income” to become an entrepreneur and own all the material possessions I could dream of,” says Hall. “In fact, starting Marc Nelson was my exit strategy. I was convinced I’d get the clothing business off the ground and step away from the gambling. But I kept putting it off until it was too late.” By 2016, Hall was sentenced to 33 months in prison, serving 14 months. His guilty plea took it all except his denim business.
“I learned to appreciate dressing well from my great-

grandfather. He was a true gentleman, a provider, a holy man, and an amazing dresser.”

“Just after entering prison, I tore my Achilles tendon. Frightened, and in pain, I had a confrontation with God. He said to me, “What do you think success is, anyway? Why did you think that was the answer?” At that moment, I knew the only path to peace was to find happiness not from external sources, but in my own skin.” After prison, in 2018, Hall began to rebuild his life. “Welcomed home by my native city of Knoxville, Tennessee, I was determined to make good on this second chance. But I wasn’t sure where God was going to take me. And little did I know that a chance opportunity to answer a phone call would change
my life and the direction of my company,” says Hall. On probation and living at a halfway house, Hall was not allowed to work for himself, so his dedicated employee Kim Milligan was in charge of the store while working for a company located in the rear of his building. Being so close by allowed him to pop into his showroom during lunch breaks. One afternoon as Hall took his lunch break from work and walked through the Marc Nelson showroom, the phone started ringing. Hall recounts this day like so, “Kim was in a back office, so I picked up the phone. A man with a voice like a wise, patient grandfather said, “I

bought several pairs of denim from a shop in Lakeland, Florida, and the owner no longer carries your brand. He spoke as if we had been friends like we had known each other for years and asked, “Would it be possible to purchase online or through you directly?” When I told him, of course, he asked if this was Marc Nelson. I laughed and said, “Why yes, it is.” He knew about my prison sentence. We spoke about it for a moment, and he showed no judgment. He told me he was glad to have talked with me, and he loved my clothes. I sent him three or four pairs of denim.” The man on the phone was Mr. Hedrick, a Lakelander. After his purchase, Mr.
Hendrick called again and said he loved the jeans, and a few months later, he visited the Marc Nelson showroom in Knoxville. “After several trips to Knoxville, Mr. Hedrick invited me to come to see him in Lakeland. When I arrived in his scenic city, it was love at first sight. Lakeland reminds me of Knoxville. It’s a small, big town where you never meet a stranger, and people take care of each other as family. Three years later, after I’d flown back and forth many times, Mr. Hedrick and his circle of friends told me that I needed to open a local store.” Hall immediately brushed off the idea, but his new clients and now friends in Lakeland didn’t give up. Hall says,

“Ronnie Hedrick II, Wesley Barnett, Patrick Spinosa, brothers Jack and Will Harrell, and Mac Miller – who had all started as clients and who I now call friends - simply stated: “We won’t let you fail.” And again, God was at work.” “The men in Lakeland had amazing style and flair,” says Hall. Hall looked into the idea of opening a location in Lakeland further and found out that Nathan’s premier men’s store closed after 78 years, so he knew that maybe there was a need he could help fill in Lakeland. while you find the perfect fit of denim or meet with Hall for a custom-made suit. The studio embraces a warm, Americana, and gentlemanly ambiance, complete with a bar to enjoy your pour of choice during your appointment. “What I truly do believe is that God put me where I needed to be. He put me in the right place at the right time.” Mark invites Lakelanders to, “Please stop by Marc Nelson Studio to try on clothes, enjoy a chat, and drink a glass of fine whiskey. We’re open Monday through Saturday. You can check Facebook and Instagram for when I’ll be in town. I’m honored to be a part of your special city and look forward to dressing your fashionable men for years to come.”
