Bob and Mary: Veni. Vidi. Vows. They came. They saw the value. They married.

L

ife has an often-surprising way of people together, of opening unexpected doors to love and happiness. Such is the case for The Estates at Carpenters residents Bob Whittaker and Mary Fenley.

“I moved in by myself in 2016,” says Mary. “After about a year, I met Bob. We were married right here at The Estates Chapel.” At the time, Bob had already been living at The Estates for about a decade. “I lost my wife, Betty, in 2016,” he says. “Then I met Mary. Soon, we decided to have Chaplain Norman Bradney perform our marriage ceremony.” The couple celebrated their five-year anniversary on February 24.

“Lifecare at The Estates gives me financial security. All levels of care are under one roof, so there’s no need to move again,” she says. When you add it all up, says Mary, The Estates provides peace of mind to her and her family. Bob joined the Navy out of high school, then worked for Carrier Air Conditioning until retirement. “In 2022, I had open-heart surgery,” he explains. He decided to make a plan and chose a Life Plan Community for a few reasons. “I wanted to secure care for my wife in case I went first. Also, I didn’t want my children to have to care for us.” By choosing The Estates, he says, “I can be sure of care to the end.”

So much to love

Was it fate?

How did this couple, destined to be together, both end up at The Estates? Mary worked as a nurse for more than 50 years, retiring in 2016, the same month she moved to The Estates. “I had the privilege of touring The Estates right after it was built, approximately 36 years ago,” says Mary. “I was so impressed I decided right then this was the place for me.”

After their courtship and marriage, says Bob, “We traded our one-bedroom apartment homes for a two-bedroom.” With a doubling up of space, there’s a lot of room and a lot to like about their home. “Our favorite feature is the balconies. We have breakfast and our devotions on one of them every morning.” Just outside their door, community life awaits.

A SALUTE TO C.C."DOC" salute – a gesture of respect, homage, or polite recognition or acknowledgement.

The stream of a lone 1940’s jet flying over the foothills of North Carolina’s Appalachia kindled many worthy aspirations from the boy plowing his field. Where was the jet going and what was its mission? The boy followed the jet by enlisting in the U.S. Air Force and achieved those original aspirations, and many more. The service man became a business man and traveled the world, gaining many experiences and competencies: an FSC graduate, journalist, lobbyist, trade association executive, Entrepreneur, Insurance Fund Administrator, International Insurance Company Owner; he also influenced national, state, and local politics. Along the way, the man has been influenced and helped by many, but has remained true to his own brand of principles and politics, and his own definition of success.

Doc, your family salutes you!

One of the many things I appreciate about my incredible wife Heather is that she’s rarely afraid to speak the truth. I asked her to think back to our wedding day, 08-08-2008, and reflect on what the most memorable part was. She did not say it was the magical photo we have of me dipping her skillfully over the edge of a rock that overlooked a small waterfall. It was not one of my friends taking a knee during the ceremony because he almost passed out. It was not even walking down the aisle at our childhood church that came to mind. Instead, my wife looked at me and offered up advice for others who are embarking on their big day: “I wish we had taken more time to really enjoy the food.” As you flip through the pages of our Wedding Issue it is a combination of grand ideas and tiny details; it is a blend of eccentric, traditional, contemporary and retro. Modern weddings are most certainly an industry, but at the heart they are an exceptional celebration of love, family and unity that point to the best parts of the human experience. I spoke to a number of brides and grooms about their wedding days. They enjoyed Instagram worthy weddings at venues like estates, gorgeous Catholic churches, historic hotels, etc. They had unique touches that started with personalized gifts for wedding parties and ended,

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

in one couple’s case, with 100+ people lined up on the street waving sparklers. But when they look back at what was most memorable, it was something specific and unique to them as individuals and as a couple. For some, it was the “first touch” ceremony before the wedding, for others it was seeing family members who live across the country, and for one bride it was that surreal moment of walking down the aisle. The truth is, when it comes to marriage, it’s about two people sharing an uncommon love that at its best has supernatural qualities. No two weddings need be compared to one another as long as it truly realizes the dreams of the couple hosting it and they are committed to what comes next. Whether you’re headed to your 100th wedding of friends or relatives, or you are anxiously anticipating your own wedding that is in the planning stage, enjoy yourself and soak in all of the moments, planned and unplanned. And make sure you take the time to enjoy the food. You likely spent a lot of time choosing it and good money paying for it.

How long have you lived in Lakeland? I am originally from Sarasota and moved to Lakeland to attend Southeastern University. I sure do miss the beach being so close, but I love the always-supportive community that Lakeland has to offer. I feel super lucky to have met some amazing people here and to call Lakeland a home away from home. How/where do you draw inspiration as a writer? I fell in love with classic literature in high school which inspired my initial desire to write. As I’ve gotten older, though, I’ve grown to

love longform think-pieces and profiles from publications like The Atlantic and The New Yorker. Words are powerful, and I’m inspired by anything that turns a story into an emotion, connecting mundane concepts with a greater meaning. What does a perfect Saturday morning in Lakeland look like for you? I really value slow weekends. A perfect Saturday morning for me would consist of some good craft coffee (I’m looking at you, Hillcrest) and a thrifting run with my roommates. Pair that with driving a couple laps around Lake Hollingsworth while listening to a good playlist, and I’m all set.

M E T R O THE STRANGE AND COMFORTING TRUTH ABOUT TRADITION

THE STRANGE AND COMFORTING TRUTH ABOUT TRADITION The humorous reality behind some timeless traditions and a look at new practices that are so 2022 written by JORDAN RANDALL

32

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

raditions can be strange. We follow them, sometimes without question, throughout some of the biggest moments of our lives. And maybe we do because we know we can rely on traditions throughout times of change and uncertainty. We put our faith in the culture we belong to and let tradition carry us from one page to the next. And on a day as big as your wedding, it’s not uncommon to hold hands with tradition. “Without tradition, our lives would be as shaky as a fiddler on the roof,” says Tevye in the opening number of the hit musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” Sometimes it can seem as if traditions have always been here. As if the earth began, and tradition began with it. Though you and I both know, someone, somewhere, at some point had to start these traditions. We give a bride something blue on her wedding day because in 1871 during the Victorian Era, someone in England wrote a short story that said you should. Today, we carry bouquets of flowers down the aisle, but in ancient Greece and Rome, they carried herbs to ward off evil spirits. In fact, in Roman times, bridesmaids wore

identical dresses not for aesthetic purposes or for a photo op, but to act as decoys and confuse evil spirits who might be there to curse the bride and groom. Obviously, for most of us, our reasons for following a lot of the time-honored wedding rituals are completely different today than they might have been hundreds of years ago. Wedding traditions are rooted in deeply cultural, sometimes religious symbolism. And a lot of us still hold these traditions near and dear to our

“WITHOUT TRADITION, OUR LIVES WOULD BE AS SHAKY AS A FIDDLER ON THE ROOF” hearts, because of what they’ve meant to us throughout our modern lives, not what they meant in ancient Greece. So we follow them, and because we are habitual but inventive beings, traditions evolve, change, and new ones are created. In fact, in 2022, a lot of classic wedding traditions have advanced and a lot of new traditions have developed as well. Because, like we already know, traditions are a part of us. “Unplugged” ceremonies are becoming more common in 2022. Don’t know what an “unplugged” ceremony is? Well, it’s 2022 and every guest has a smartphone. And if every guest has a smartphone, every guest has a camera as well. These pocket-size devices can be I SS U E 76

really great at helping guests capture and share precious memories in an instant, but they can also be really great at distracting them from the moment. That’s why there’s been a rise in cell phone-free, “unplugged” wedding services as of late, providing brides and grooms who choose to go this route with a ceremony where all eyes are strictly on them. It also provides better photo opportunities for the official photographer, as no guest’s face will be hidden behind a screen as they try to capture a shot of the bride walking down the aisle. You get fully realized, realtime emotions and reactions captured in the moment. And honestly, isn’t that how it should be? When it comes down to your wedding day, you can have your cake and hopefully eat it too. But who ever said it had to be cake? In ancient Rome, the groom would break a loaf of barley bread over the bride’s head and guests would gather the crumbs because they were deemed “lucky.” Eventually, Queen Victoria popularized tall wedding cakes with white, “royal” icing, and now we eat cake at weddings (everybody say: “thank you Queen Victoria”). But in recent years, many couples have been trading in the 33

METRO

“UNPLUGGED” CEREMONIES ARE BECOMING MORE COMMON IN 2022 traditional wedding cake for alternative dessert options. Such options include donuts, ice cream, cookies, a luxe tarte spread, even a cheese board if you’re feeling particularly European. These options are not only delicious but can be more cost effective too, which seems to be the name of the game when it comes to ceremony trends in 2022. Another way couples are saving money and staying safe in an unprecedented age of Covid, is by having microweddings. Gone are the days where you had the expectation placed on you of inviting every soul you’ve ever met to your wedding. Micro-weddings are larger than elopements, but smaller than full-fledged ceremonies. Considered an intimate affair that includes only your closest inner circle of friends and family, microweddings can be safer for those with immunocompromised family members or friends. The truth is, after the pandemic started, weddings shrank significantly and a small guest list allows you to truly focus

34

on the ones you love. Generations old traditions can be both communal and comforting. There’s nothing wrong with choosing to follow them and carry that torch forward, but there’s also something uniquely special about forming your own traditions, especially with those you love. No matter what traditions you choose to follow or create for yourself on your wedding day, all that matters is who you’re making those decisions with, and who you’re surrounded by when you do it. Some traditions might be steeped in “warding off evil spirits,” or bringing good luck and fortune to the happy couple, but most of us agree the real power they have is nurturing special bonds, and bringing a sense of belonging into the lives of those who follow them. Isn’t that what we all want?

Full of natural beauty, stunning architecture and interesting history, Greece offers loads of breathtaking views that will make you want to delay your return trip.

For some couples, the epitome of a good honeymoon is sitting waterside with a drink in hand. While sure to be filled with gorgeous views and blissful water, your honeymoon to the Keys can be as relaxing or as action-packed as you desire. Lay out in the sun, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, go diving and snorkeling. Maybe try your hand at fishing, or stand-up paddleboarding, or kayaking through some beautiful mangrove caves. If you decide to go into town, you can stroll through various art galleries and boutiques filled with creations from local artists. And did we mention the food? Seafood and key lime pie are everywhere.

A classic honeymoon destination that will never go out of style, Hawaii remains a trending spot and a wonderful choice for your special travels for one perfect reason: it is never not delightful. In times where traveling out of the country can be more complicated than usual, keeping your itinerary within the states can be a big stress reliever. Hawaii remains one of the best places on earth to catch sunrises and sunsets, and contains several gorgeous islands to visit. Hike, surf, zip-line, or just put your toes in the sand and relax.

ardboard castles with half-dressed dolls as bridesmaids illustrate a reality where the only ceiling is the one rendered by pure and eternal imaginations of young girls. Imagine an old railroad yard and brownfield on the outskirts of downtown Lakeland being transformed into an unprecedented sprawling ode to nature and architecture that is ready to present itself as a "Secret Garden" of sorts — a collection of interwoven, yet distinctive spaces where brides, grooms and wedding goers will feel as if they have escaped reality, all while being

right at home. Yet here it is, in our city, to behold and to celebrate as a backdrop for kids playing, laughing and learning, for people strolling along and stopping to enjoy meals — and as a place like Florida has never before seen to host weddings that are original, historic and modern, all in one. Bonnet Springs Park is slated to host a grand opening celebration on October 22, 2022. As a toast to Lakelanders for what this means, we decided to dream with you and host a mock wedding to show you the ethereal elegance and bountiful opportunities this place will offer.

63

64

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

As Laura Shannon, owner of Bloom Shakalaka, Ashton Events, and House 820, who partnered with The Lakelander to “host the first unofficial wedding” at the park says, “This is like a dream becoming a reality, and this is the new Florida landscape.” There are timeless chain links, clean polished stones, water features separated by magical stepstones and a million little details to absorb. There are also landmarks, buildings with names of familiar local families and businesses who invested in this non-profit venture, and distinctive creative anchors to the property, like the open wooden arch at the end of the runway where bride and groom recite their vows. The 168-acre park includes a modern venue featuring a lot of clean lines, natural wood and dark metal that can accommodate up to 400 guests with a large dance floor. It also has a lot of hidden nooks and crannies that will make for a perfect microwedding or more private ceremony.

“This is like a dream becoming a reality, and this is the new Florida landscape.”

65

BONNET SPRINGS

Bill Young, Vice President of Revenue for Bonnet Springs Park, says one word that best describes the venue is flexible. He points to a gorgeous dock where parties could enjoy cocktails as an example of modern entertainment at its finest. He also notes there are 200-year old trees and a classic Florida foliage canopy over a long boardwalk that are a nod to “classic Florida.” The wide open outdoor spaces, which can also be enjoyed from inside the venue through floor-to-ceiling windows, are vast and have a sense of symmetrical elegance with rows of budding trees, but also many of the region’s distinctive grasses. “This is kind of an ethereal setting, but it's still within the context of central Florida,” Young says.

When the first couple says “I do” at an actual ceremony within Bonnet Springs park, it will be an exhilarating moment preceded by daring dreams, lengthy delays and plenty of questions about the feasibility of pulling off what has turned into a $110 million investment. It has been roughly seven years since Lakeland developers David Bunch and Bill Tinsley, a long-time director of the city’s parks, developed a vision alongside Barney and Carol Barnett, to revitalize an old, tired space into a delightful place that is accessible to the entire community with the purpose of being enjoyed by all. “I think there were a lot of people who were skeptical about the fact that it would actually come to fruition,” Young said. “There’s nothing like it in a lot of metropolitan areas, let alone in the state of Florida, and it’s a free experience (to enter the park) for people of all ages and demographics to come out and enjoy the space.” Weddings are just one, albeit a very significant, part of what will make the Bonnett Springs experience memorable. The park will also be home to Florida Children’s Museum — a new iteration of the amiable Explorations V Children’s Museum that has been downtown for more than 30 years — as well as the Harrell Family Greenhouse, Ruthven Family Playground, Kiwanis Cares For Kids Treehouse, and so much more. For wedding parties, it will be a unique mix of one-of-a-kind celebrations being held alongside people going about their everyday lives - no different than many large city venues, but different than what Polk County has traditionally had to offer. “Good behavior is really your ticket to admission here,” Young says. “We hope that those two kinds of guests could interact well — just your regular day visitors that are here to experience the environment or get some exercise, get some fresh air…with those here for a wedding or any other type of function.”

Weddings are all about the people, the place — and the details. As Shannon coordinated everything, from the flowers to the apparel to the table settings for The Lakelander photo shoot at Bonnet Springs, it served as a reminder of all of the pieces that fit together to make “the big day” the most special day. Young, who has decades of experience in the restaurant and theme park industries, said the Bonnet Springs team is developing a premium standard of customer service, and they will highly recommend each wedding party have at least a wedding coordinator for their event, if not a fullblown wedding planner.

Bonnet Springs is working on a list of preferred vendors to provide soon-tobe bride and grooms options for vetted planners, floral providers, photographers, etc. But one place Young said Bonnet Springs is ensuring excellence is through its authorized caterers, which currently includes eight vendors with various price points and cuisines. “When someone inquires about our space we say, ‘Here’s our list of approved folks who we’ve met with, who understand our I SS U E 76

71

BONNET SPRINGS

expectations and we feel good about the quality they have delivered,’” he said. “We are a little more rigid with that because all of the guests are experiencing the food and the catering…but for some of the other stuff, we will be more flexible with specific vendors for your function, as long as they are a legitimate business and our license can insure them.” During our mock wedding, we had some fun on the vendor's side - asking the bartender to craft several Florida-centric cocktails and integrating a cake that blended right in with some of the traditional beautiful aesthetic of the Florida outdoors, greenery with splashes of bold color. The venue can incorporate seating on the lawn, underneath the protection of a metal roof, or inside the large multi-use facility. Bonnet Springs Park is also within a short drive to a number of highly-recommended hotels that can accommodate out-of-town guests.

The grand opening of the park in October means your wedding or the wedding of a friend or family member could soon be just a quick bike ride away from so many other Lakeland restaurants, businesses, sights and sounds. But what price point is Bonnett Springs at, and how can someone start the process of seeing what their own peek into the local “Secret Garden” might look like? Young said they are not going to publicly release prices, in part because of how it can widely vary. He revealed it's going to be competitive with the Orlando and Tampa markets, and “it’s going to be on a sliding scale that slides toward the weekend being the most expensive dates.” He said that while a certain level of wedding on a Saturday evening at Bonnet Park may not be in a couple’s budget, that same level of wedding on a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday may be affordable for them. Revenue from events, such as weddings, will help offset the 74

need for donations to make up for the park’s operating expenses. Part of what gets Young most excited is that as time goes on, the park will not only grow more beautiful with more mature foliage and flowers, but his team will be able to incorporate new ideas and experiences based on ideas that customers ask them to bring to life. Shannon concurs with that line of thinking. “The flexibility of the space is just so incredible, and for photography the options are endless,” she said. Several weddings and other events have already been booked before the park’s grand opening, but Young said he anticipates really ramping up the marketing and accessibility of the venue in early 2023 when his team will have had a chance to develop best practices and know how to bring the best experiences to life for guests.

How Stationery Loft Creates Invitations that Inspire

Story by Jenna MacFarlane Photos by Jordan Randall

rtisan-craft stationery makes for an impactful moment for wedding guests; one where they feel a sense of welcoming and belonging. Wedding stationery comes in all forms — think invitations, seating charts, menus, and signage — and takes a keen eye to get it perfect and polished. Stationery Loft, Lakeland’s own stationery boutique, offers brides a place to ideate and craft a cohesive collection of wedding paper and printed goods. Founder Heidi Campbell developed a passion for stationery when, years ago, she made custom invitations for her family’s frequent theme parties. When she moved to

86

Lakeland, she was dismayed to find no paper shops nearby at the right price point — so she decided to open one herself. Heidi opened Stationery Loft on May 1, 2008. Nearly 15 years later, she owns and operates it alongside designer Kerrianne Hopkins. Together they create artwork, curate recommendations and customize stationery for clients to fit their vision. The Lakelander sat down with Heidi to get some insight on her shop, its purpose, and why great paper is so important.

SYDNEY AND AARON FEATURED A CUSTOM SELECTED CREST IN LETTERPRESS FOR MANY

Tell me about the first steps you take with a client. What’s the first thing you do with a new client that might not know quite what they want? HEIDI ANSWERS...

PIECES OF THEIR ITALIAN DESTINATION WEDDING.

90

When someone finds us or decides to work with us, whether it’s for a wedding or a party, we encourage them to create a Pinterest board or some sort of documentation of what they like. This gives us an idea of the style, colors and overall vibe of the wedding. We go back-and-forth until we have a thorough understanding of their goals. From there, we start drafting.

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

What do you think is the most important difference between Stationery Loft and just going online and ordering invitations? HEIDI ANSWERS...

First of all, we save brides from themselves. They go online and see everything that’s available — they don’t know who to trust about etiquette and layout. Your wedding invitation is the most formal invitation you will ever mail out. It’s important you understand the weight of that and use correct etiquette and layout. Also, issues with printing and design are very common online. At Stationery Loft, brides can come in and we can work directly together to make sure everything looks perfect for them.

JENNA ASKS...

JENNA ASKS...

What are some of the trends you see coming within stationery and wedding goods?

Are your clients all local? How do you cater to those who may not live nearby?

HEIDI ANSWERS...

HEIDI ANSWERS...

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a swing into a vintage vibe – invitations on kraft paper, casual layouts, things like that. The pendulum is swinging more formally now. We’re seeing a lot more classic styles – like using wax-sealed envelopes. We’re seeing more delicate and feminine, like damask patterns, delicate florals, and lighter colors. People used to only make monograms – now they’re doing full-blown crests. Also, we’re seeing mixed mediums – people will take scans of flowers, place them on the invitations, and use both digital and raised prints in the same design.

Most are local, but we get a fair amount of people from Tampa and Orlando. There’s a little pocket of people that have found us in New York, South Carolina and Texas. For them, we’ll send photos and mockups back and forth. I’ll send them to paper shops in their towns to feel the paper we’re recommending for them. We’ve even done FaceTime walk-throughs of our shop. It’s a concierge service, really.

Why do people choose Stationery Loft over other vendors? HEIDI ANSWERS...

ASHLEY AND WILL’S INVITATION EMBODIES ALL OF THE ELEMENTS FOR AN ELEGANT BEACH WEDDING IN THE KEYS. THE ART IS HAND-PAINTED BY THE BRIDE, PAIRED WITH

Some people come to us simply because they need to get people to their wedding. Others come to us because they love paper — they understand how the quality sets the tone for the wedding. Just like how many couples will do the “First Look” on their wedding dress, the invitation is the first look at the wedding as a whole. It sets the expectation. You want your guests to know that you’re welcoming them. Nobody wants their wedding to feel like an obligation. A well-made, high-quality invitation builds anticipation for the event and makes guests feel honored to attend.

What is your favorite trend in stationery right now? HEIDI ANSWERS...

Letterpress is a print method done on a soft, thick paper in order to get luxurious, deep impressions. See photo on page 90. JENNA ASKS...

What’s a unique way you were able to help a client with their stationery process? HEIDI ANSWERS...

We help a lot of brides who have had issues with other vendors. One evening, a bride brought in her invitations — only six weeks before her wedding. She had ordered them on Etsy, they arrived late, and they didn’t fit in the envelopes! She came into our shop just before we closed, sobbing. I stayed with her until 10:30 p.m. that night — we redesigned and reprinted the entire invitation ensemble. She left that night with beautiful invitations. There’s nowhere else she could’ve had that service other than a small, privately-owned stationer like us.

ust as surprising as the clever and inventive ways people have devised to “pop the question” over the years, is the history of how engagement rings — now a multi-billion dollar industry — had a humble, if not unremarkable start. In ancient Rome women wore rings of ivory, flint, bone, copper and iron “to signify a business contract or to affirm mutual love and obedience,” according to the Gemological Institute of America. Precious metals have long been part of bridal jewelry, but most people throughout history have not been able to afford precious stones as part of their symbolic accessories. As Brides.com noted in an article earlier this year, the diamond craze has not actually been “forever” — in fact its roots are tied to a 1947 advertising campaign by British company De Beers.

Today, engagement rings are a massive part of the marriage tradition in the United State alone, and for some people finding the right ring can seem like a labyrinth of advertising, options, materials and colors. Buyers need to inform themselves about the differences between lab-made and natural diamonds (and other stones), coloring, grading, cuts, settings and more. All of those factors account for the massive range of prices for engagement and wedding bands, sometimes for rings that at first glance might look quite similar aside from the price. To help you navigate the expansive market and world of rings and bridal jewelry, we have curated a distinctive and beautiful selection of pieces from a trio of jewelers who have strong reputations for being a go-to source from many couples in Central Florida.

What trends are you seeing most prominently with engagement rings?

What advice do you give individuals who are starting their search for an engagement ring?

“I feel like for the most part, when they walk into our doors….they aren’t looking exactly for what their mother wears, but they are looking for maybe something more contemporary…but they are investing more in the stone than they are the band.”

“Make sure you know what your budget is. There is always something beautiful to fit within it.” HELEN, IDC

HELEN, IDC

“The strongest trend right now is labcreated diamonds, and that’s because of the price point. If you showed me two loose stones - one lab created and one earth mined - I cannot tell the difference…there is some very special equipment that can separate lab-created from earth mined. It used to be that all pearls were natural until the 19th century…and now natural pearls and cultured pearls are both accepted.”

“You need to know what you can afford. Then we can talk about style and then look at the center stone that works well within that style.” SUZANNE, GAINES JEWELERS

“Shop for quality! Know your budget and find you “sweet Spot” with the 4 C’s: Carat, Clarity, Color and Cut.” MADI, MAX JEWELERS
