We would like to honor the founders of Agnini Dental, the ones who started it all, Dr. Mike Agnini and his wife Donna. They came to Lakeland in 1979 with their two small sons to pursue their dreams of opening a dental practice. While nurturing a growing family, and working tirelessly to create a successful business, they poured everything into planting firm roots into Lakeland. They have been married 54 years, and are proof that love and admiration for one another can create a strong foundation for growth and success. This is a legacy they can be proud to leave to all future generations of dentists at Agnini Family Dental.

NO TWO MOMENTS ARE EXACTLY ALIKE

Artificial intelligence portraits have officially invaded our planet. Simply upload 10-20 digital shots of yourself onto an app and less than half an hour later you will feel like your daydreams (and some other dreams you’d rather not remember) turned into real life and appeared in the palm of your hand.

You could be a chiseled model in one shot, a fantasy world viking in another and a regal astronaut in the next. It is the ultimate, “What if?” that takes the idea of expanding your imagination to a whole new level.

Personally, I find it fascinating, and I’ll admit I’ve had some laughs and cringes as I’ve seen my friends’ automated creations, but at the end of the day nothing beats real life.

Putting together this issue I must have looked at 30 photos of the iconic Southgate signage along South Florida Ave., and no two are exactly alike. The passage of time is evident through technology upgrades, the lights hit in a striking way when the pavement is wet and much of the personality of each

shot is based on the perspective of the photographer.

It’s all about perspective—from the places we have been to where we are headed—and far too often, virtual reality and social media are filled with deceptively fake authenticity.

The way we feel about real photos of real people, places and experiences are related to joy, pain and everything in between that is remembered, retold and re-lived. Putting together this photo book issue was evocative because it brought new angles and attributes to things I hold sacred or have experienced in my own unique ways as a Lakelander. I think you will experience some of the same, whether you have lived here a year or half a century.

It was also a lot of fun because it married the digital world we live in and the physical world by tapping into some of the greatest digital photos we could find of our community and getting permission to bring them to life in print.

What you will find, I hope, is an experience that is lively and satisfying, and a little bit different than what any algorithm can spit out on command.

This is Lakeland.

BRIANA CHENOT

Growing up in Lakeland has allowed me to appreciate the simpler things in life all while soaking up some Florida sunshine. I recently graduated from the University of North Florida with a degree in Graphic Design + Digital Media.

I find it so interesting how graphic design can influence you or I to make a purchase just by the aesthetic of the label. It impacts us every day without even realizing it, that is what attracted me to this profession. Other activities that I enjoy doing are baking, spending time outdoors, attending sporting events such as hockey games (go Bolts!), and taking my dog on mini adventures around town.

is no secret that Lakeland is filled with

picturesque charm. Historic cobblestone roads, public Prairiestyle architecture, lakes filled with graceful swans––the city effortlessly creates a backdrop for photographers to capture special moments. From maternity and family sessions to creative portraits and documenting new love, photographers both locally and from afar find our city has quite more to offer than you’d first expect.

But what, in fact, makes for the perfect photo opp? Good lighting, a variety of distinct features to diversify your angles and, with the Florida heat, locations that feature shade. Your creative eye looks for it all in one place: textures, colors and tones to compliment your subjects or create your desired outcome.

The next time you’re looking for a place to snap a memorable selfie or have your family portraits taken, here is a round up of some of our favorite spots that carry significant Lakeland panache.

Lakeland Highlands Scrub

Filled with vibrant wildlife––such as osprey and gopher tortoises––and pavilions overlooking this nature trail, the Lakeland Highlands Scrub features beautiful greenery and shrubbery over 551-acres of conservation. Local residents can enjoy how untouched the reserve feels as you make your way through the shady marshlands. This hiking trail has a boardwalk overlooking the lake, which gives a great rustic look. As a photographer, you’re always on the hunt for a diverse location where you can feature a bit of everything for your client.

Lakeland Highlands Scrub offers just that, while bringing you the creative freedom of trying new angles and creative interpretations with open skies covering so much foliage.

Lake Parker Park

Noted as a place that has “something for everyone,” this family-friendly park located in North Lakeland offers a stunning view of Lakeland’s largest lake, Lake Parker. Whether you’re looking for lakefront photos by their industrial bridges or for iconic lighting beneath the brush of their palm trees, this picnicking spot offers a variety of options for a full range photography shoot.

With towering trees throughout this park, you definitely feel the sense you’ve found a forest of sorts.

3

Color Wall at Haus820

For a colorful, playful vibe, visit Lakeland’s iconic Color Wall mural facing Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Lakeland. Often used in gender reveal photos, it features five different hues for you to strike a pose in front of.

If you’re looking for a more minimalistic vibe, the other side of Haus 820, one of Lakeland’s premier wedding venues, has an all white brick wall and another colorful mural created by local artist, Jujmo, in 2016. This location perfectly combines modern art with contemporary architecture.

4

Lake Mirror

Take a panoramic view of downtown Lakeland from the Lake Mirror Promenade. Another picture-perfect stop, this area features a timeless view of the lake, the Loggia towering doors and Hollis Gardens, a rich botanical experience.

Lake Mirror also has a fountain centered on its waters where you’ll find ducklings and other birds roaming around. The romantic cobblestone path paired with its bright vegetation give a great touch to this Lakeland staple.

Then and Now

Over 90 Years of Premier Banking

Wauchula State Bank’s dedication to serving local businesses began in 1929 and continues today in its fourth generation of family leadership. Experience the difference of banking with Wauchula State Bank. Come by the bank’s newest location in the historic Nathan’s Men’s Store building in the heart of Downtown Lakeland.

Loyce E. Harpe Park

When you venture into the South Lakeland area, you’ll find Loyce E. Harpe Park, which used to be known as Carter Road Park. This park is a beloved spot by bikers and athletes as it has softball fields, baseball fields, soccer fields, hiking trails, fishing and other activity areas.

Surrounded by wide open fields and seasonal tall grass areas, this is an ideal location for portraits or creative outdoor shots. It also features a skate park that provides more of an urban backdrop for shoots.

Bonnet Springs Park

Bonnet Springs Park is one of Lakeland’s largest public parks, and it has quickly become a local favorite. Whether you’re taking family photos or an intimate engagement session, you have several picturesque areas throughout this uniquely urban locale. Offering venue rentals throughout its 168 acres, it is already one of the hottest event spaces in the city.

Colt Creek State Park

7 8

With more than 5,000 acres of natural flatwoods, wildlife and wetlands, Colt Creek State Park in North Lakeland is yet another photographer’s dream in Lakeland. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the sun peeks over 15 miles of hiking trails offering you dynamic lighting and outdoor charm.

For the adventurous couples, you can rent canoes or kayaks to take your photoshoot throughout the park’s lakes. In addition to this breathtaking nature hub, the park allows visitors to enjoy its 75 foot dock. Keep your eyes peeled for critters, including alligators and other Central Florida natives.

Florida Southern College

An inspiring scene largely created by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, Florida Southern College is a local’s favorite for modern design. Two years in a row, The Princeton Review ranked it as number one “most beautiful campus in the nation,” understandably so as the college campus adorns Lakeland with its unique layout.

Central to the campus, you’ll find the Water Dome––a must-see photo opp. As well, the campus faces the beautiful Lake Hollingsworth, giving access to more waterfront snapshots.

5
6
Be sure you check out their online map before arriving to make note of the location you’ll want to shoot your photos, as the park is incredibly vast in size. You can snap adorable photos of the little ones in your family at their playgrounds throughout their park. Or you can also take pictures at their treehouse or canopy walk. You can also visit the butterfly house and botanical gardens for those whimsical portraits. @sundial.creatives

avier Reyes is the owner of Sundial Creatives, a Lakeland-based photography company that specializes in capturing magical wedding moments. His interest in photography began in a classroom right before he graduated from Southeastern University. He was a business major, but one class sparked a passion for photography that spurred him to discover how to capture moments in ways that made them timeless. He was hooked. So he purchased a camera and started his journey as a photographer. Through trial and error, he learned the art and mastered his craft to get to where he is today.

What he loved the most was that he got to explore and meet new people, which led him down a rabbit hole he didn’t want to leave. He wasn’t planning on making this his career, but he’s used his business background to develop his own brand and share his knowledge with upcoming photographers who share his passion. Reyes was more than willing to share with fellow Lakelanders some of his favorite tips for taking stunning photos with the cameras they carry around in their pocket everyday. Enjoy some easy ways to take smartphone photos people will think you took with professional equipment.

Practice is Everything

The first step is simply getting out there and practicing taking photos. Your skills won’t progress unless you’re putting the effort in. You will make mistakes in the beginning, but that’s fine. It’s a learning process that will make you explore and try to capture every moment that interests you. Get yourself out there, and take pictures of your friends. Offer to take photos for as many people as possible, and even venture out to offer to take photos for small businesses. The results won’t always be optimal, but the practice is essential for improving your craft.

1. METRO 32

2. 3.

Find Someone Who Inspires You

Find someone who does what you want to do and learn from them. Take what they do best and emulate their style while developing your techniques on your phone. This includes finding out what kind of pictures you want to take. Better yet, try reaching out to them to see if you can get a first-hand look at their process. More people than you can imagine take your favorite Instagram shots on phones just like yours. The more you interact with others who have similar pursuits—no matter how much more advanced they are at it—the better you will become.

Find Even Lighting

Shade is your best friend when taking pictures. Find even lighting with nice shadowing. If you’re looking for a great beginner’s shot, try taking portraits near sunrise or sunset—often referred to as “golden hour” by photographers. Don’t shoot specifically with harsh lighting, which is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during this time of the year. It’s also true that the better your equipment is, the greater flexibility you will have to work with different lighting—so if you can splurge on a newer, more advanced phone, your results are likely to improve. Newer phones are built to accommodate portraits and some include the “bokeh” effect that enables a photo to pop out for a 3D-like effect.

Control Colors and Background 4.

It might sound obvious, but the better you plan, usually the better you will shoot. These factors come down to the aesthetic of the picture, from what the scene or the people are wearing. It’s all about what the focus is in the picture. Don’t wear or include sharp lines or patterns. Solid colors and minimal patterns look clearer in pictures. Also, finding a good background to be your backdrop, especially for portraits, is essential to create images that pop.

After Experimenting, Move On 5.

Take about six months to take photos of different things around you. Explore your city or places you’re familiar with, take pictures of all the exciting scenes and shoot the best views you can. After some time, look through your library, see what photos you like to take, and learn how to master them. Notice the kinds of photographs you’re gravitating toward and research apps and tools that can take you to the next level. And someday, just like Javier, you might trade in your smartphone hobby for a professional level camera.

Phillips Photographers was a portrait and commercial photography studio located on South Florida Avenue in Lakeland, Florida. Earlier this month, Lakelander Media closed on the building, and in 2023 we plan on remodeling the building to be our new home. It is the ideal space for our growth as a company, which includes making the finest print publication we can to celebrate Lakelanders, as well as leading professional branding, marketing and logo efforts through Lakelander Creative. We are also launching Dear Lakeland, a lifestyle brand that represents and fits the people of our community.
