Between online and print, you’ve contributed quite a few pieces to The Lakelander. What has been your favorite piece to write to date? One of my favorite articles I’ve written for The Lakelander has been “To Live Slowly, To Live in Love.” As a creative, I have a deep appreciation for art, culture, and life. Getting to dive into Spanish casita architecture and interview the lovely Elizabeth Hults was incredibly insightful and lifegiving. It helped me learn so much about the rich history of our city. How do you overcome writer’s block? Just as much as we give out creatively, we need to be intentionally pouring into our creativity. One of the biggest [ways] is to step away from the busyness of life and make time to get inspired. Whether it be through experiences or travel, our mind searches for new ways to interpret stories. In order to step out of writer’s block, I set aside time to grow more aware of my surroundings and step away from the digital screen every now and then to learn something new.

We hear you’re newly engaged. What’s been your favorite part of the wedding planning process so far? I would say booking our vendors. We are both naturally doers, so we enjoy getting to cross things off our lists. As well, we love being able to buy things that have sentimental value to us. We just bought a beautiful, handcrafted table runner with the lyrics to one of our favorite songs handlettered onto the fabric (Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect”). We’re excited to have this draped on our cake table, and then keep it to lay out in our new home. What does your ideal day in Lakeland look like? Heading down to Born & Bread, Concord Coffee, The Poor Porker, Hillcrest Coffee — grabbing a bite to eat and enjoying the warm ambiances. Walking Lake Hollingsworth or taking a stroll in Munn Park when there are community events. I know a lot of store owners by name, and they know me by name. To me, that’s the coolest feature in the world, and it’s what makes Lakeland feel so unique.

THE PROBLEM I S T H AT W E OFTEN LEAN S O H E A V I LY O N THE OPINIONS AND ADVICE OF O T H E R S T H AT IT CAN BECOME

Today’s culture is oversaturated with media feeding us the do’s and don’ts of health and beauty. It seems like everyone is a health expert or beauty specialist, and has an opinion on what’s needed to look and feel our best. Technology is a great tool that connects us with experts and provides the immediate answers we are often searching for when it comes to health and beauty. From our phones, we can easily search the top beauty trends, the at-home workout routines, and nutrition advice. However, have we grown too dependent on the voices of others that we’ve silenced the most important voice of all? Our bodies are magnificent machines. When things aren’t functioning properly, it will typically tell us. There are physical signs and symptoms that alert us of basic needs like when we need food, water, or rest. The body gives off a whole bunch of signals. The trouble comes when the voices of others are louder than our body’s signals.

We hear it all the time: “Listen to your body.” But it can be easier said than done to truly hear and understand what our bodies may be telling us. The problem is that we often lean so heavily on the opinions and advice of others that it can become natural to ask others what is best for us before we ask ourselves the same question. The longer we go on not listening to our bodies, the more difficult it will become to decipher what it’s telling us. If we are not regularly evaluating how we are feeling, we will continue to grow a disconnect from ourselves, leaving us ill-equipped to give ourselves what we really need. Because a lot of times we may believe that our bodies are telling us one thing, when we are actually misinterpreting the signals. We may believe that the extra dessert will satisfy our cravings, the extra hours spent working will make us more productive, or that skipping the nighttime skincare regimen will give us a more restful night’s sleep because we’ll be getting into bed quicker. Paying attention to our bodies is one thing, but learning to take its feedback and apply it to our lives is another thing. It’s hard to break unhealthy habits and add better ones if we numb the voice within us that’s reminding us what we really need. There are so many voices out there telling us what to do, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It can be helpful to read the latest tips on skincare, nutrition, and fitness. Take advantage of how technology allow us to instantly access all sorts of health and beauty tips. But sometimes it’s OK to silence them so that you can allow space for your own voice to be heard, too. Because no one knows you better than you.

GOW FIELDS AWARDED GEORGE JENKINS AWARD

Former Lakeland Mayor and City Commissioner Gow Fields received the 2019 George Jenkins Award at the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting for his service and dedication to the community. The George Jenkins Award is one of the city’s highest honors. Fields has served the community for over 20 years.

The City Commission voted to approve a food truck park that will be opening at 802 N. Massachusetts Avenue. The park will be called “The Yard on Mass,” located just moments away from the beloved Mass Market, a space that has experienced a great deal of success. To keep things fresh, the park will host four food trucks at a time on a rotating basis. The space is being built on the lot of an old car dealership and will feature an event space, patio space, and mezzanine. The Yard on Mass hopes to be a familyfriendly, multigenerational space to provide good food and entertainment for the community.

Craig Morby and his business partners originally came up with a similar idea in Boulder, Colorado. The concept was successful out west and has since gained popularity in Florida. Morby hopes to work with local craft breweries to serve beer on tap at the park. The founders are striving to create a relaxing, inviting space for people to gather with old and new friends alike. Between the live music and games on the lawn, The Yard on Mass will be the backyard party your neighbors won’t complain about. FLORIDA POLY HACKS THEIR WAY TO NUMBER ONE The annual HackRiddle event at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University was dominated by four students from Lakeland’s own Florida Polytechnic University. With just 24 hours to come up with a project and develop it, the team worked all through the night to come out on top among 27 other college teams that participated in this statewide hackathon.

Expanded Single Mom’s Program One More Child and Florida Baptist Children’s Home have decided to expand their Single Mom’s Program. The program provides housing as well as weekly classes on parenting skills, teaching moms how to have a healthy lifestyle and how to save money. Single moms are required to attend these classes as well as pay $60 per month. Women will also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships to continue their education. The beloved Beacon Starbucks is getting a new home. Located at the iconic Southgate shopping center, the 2,515-square-foot Starbucks is rising rapidly. According to the developer, the new building will be ready to hand off to the company in April.

Foam Rolling Using a full-size or half-size foam roller, lie parallel to the ground when working on the lower body, placing the foam roller in between you and the ground. While rolling before a workout, focus on long, smooth movements. It’s essential for chronically tight muscles. Foam rolling produces heat in the areas targeted, which will help the overall body regulate blood flow. If you feel a tight spot, you can roll over the area again with shorter strokes.

HIP ACTIVATION Ankle Band Variations Glute Bridges 2 sets x10 Clam Shells 2 sets x10 In a supine position, bend knees to 90 degrees and dorsiflex foot. Position the ankle bands right above the lower part of both quads at the same time (right above the knee, not on it). Raise the hips into a slow thrust while your legs are going against the resistance of the bands. Focus on contracting the glutes and slowly drop the hips to the ground to finish the rep. Banded Terminal Knee Extensions (TKE) Attach or tie a band around a pole. Insert one leg through the band to have resistance be applied away from your body. The band should focus on applying resistance away from the knee as the band is positioning directly around the knee, forcing the posterior part of the knee to be flexed and extended.

In less than a month, KELLA’s (aka Raquel Kella Armitage) debut single, “Trainwreck,” has reached over 50,000 streams on Spotify. The Lakeland native has always strived to create, and her musical journey is indicative of that. Max Martin, a Swedish songwriter known for his work with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, the Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC, greatly inspired Armitage as an artist. This led her to Stockholm where she developed her music and personal sound. Before going to Stockholm, Armitage perfected her craft in both Nashville and London, where she attended

songwriting sessions with various artists from around the world, from a variety of genres. While in London, she met Swedish producer Johannes Andersson, who helped her recent release, “Trainwreck.” The single is a sweet combination of American songwriting and Scandinavian production that is reminiscent of an ’80s pop song with a contemporary twist. It has also been described as an infectiously bouncy sound with well-crafted hooks that leave you wanting more. Berna Nar and her husband, Erkan, the recipients of Catapult’s People’s Choice Award for 2018, have been serving the city of Lakeland for the last eight years, providing the community with an array of Turkish treats at Cafe Zuppina. At the end of 2018, Berna and her husband opened The Market at Cafe Zuppina, featuring Turkish feta cheese and spices, in addition to various European ingredients used in European/ Turkish recipes. WHY IS EVERYONE TALKING ABOUT CBD? The latest health craze has come to Lakeland: CBD. CBD, or cannabidiol, is an increasingly popular natural remedy used to treat a variety of common ailments. It is one of 104 cannabinoids found in cannabis or marijuana. Unlike its common relative THC — or tetrahydrocannabinol — CBD is not a psychoactive substance. This means CBD users do not experience the “high” sensation. The lack of mindaltering effects has made CBD an attractive option for individuals who are looking for natural treatments for pain, anxiety, and a variety of other symptoms. CBD appears to have an ever-growing list of health benefits. Some of these benefits include pain relief, reduction of anxiety and depression, alleviation of cancer-related symptoms, acne reduction, neuroprotective properties, and increased heart health. The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a specialized system in the body that is involved in regulating bodily functions such as sleep, appetite, pain, and immune system response. Endocannabinoids are neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the nervous system. By impacting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters,

CBD has shown to reduce chronic pain. Perhaps the most appealing characteristic of CBD is its supposed impact on anxiety and depression. According to the World Health Organization, depression is the single largest contributor to disability worldwide, while anxiety disorders are ranked sixth. The common method of treatment for these mental illnesses is pharmaceutical drugs which include a variety of side effects as well as addictive qualities. Studies have shown that CBD has reduced anxiety around public speaking. Additionally, it has been used to treat anxiety and insomnia in children who suffer with post-traumatic stress disorder. These effects have been linked to CBD’s ability to act on serotonin

receptors which regulate mood and behavior. Many individuals have questioned the legality of CBD due to its relation with THC, which is illegal in most states. Frankly, it’s hazy — pun intended. Federally, CBD is classified as a Schedule I drug, which is defined as a drug with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse. On the state level, there are three states that have made cannabis completely illegal: Idaho, Nebraska, and South Dakota. However, the legality of cannabis in other states may vary. There is a large variety of ways to consume CBD. This includes oils, creams, capsules, edibles, and vaping. Each method can take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to take effect. This does not include vaping. When vaping CBD oil, the substance is almost instantly transferred from the lungs into the bloodstream. When determining an appropriate dosage, the amount varies amongst all individuals. As with any new supplement, it’s important to do the research yourself and to ask your doctor before incorporating a new treatment regimen to wellness practice.

The Lakelander: How long have you been cutting hair? Price Thomas: Five and a half years. Growing up in a family full of barbers makes it feel so much longer. I always joke that it was a 23-year process to get hired at my family’s shop! TL: What was your most embarrassing moment as a cosmetology student or apprentice? PT: I’d say the process of learning to express myself through hair was pretty embarrassing. I never really encouraged myself for selfexpression, so it was kind of awkward at first. TL: Why is a good haircut so important for men? PT: I think it’s very important for anyone to look confident in the way they present themselves, and a good haircut is a cornerstone for anyone’s appearance. TL: What are some new hair trends for men? PT: I think we are going to see more short haircuts (i.e. Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok). It’s short and texturized, looking very simple, but there’s been a lot of work put into it, and it shows. But the real trend to me is confidence. Just looking like you take care of yourself and carry yourself well; you can’t go wrong.

TL: What are the three “musthave” products and/or tools that every guy needs? PT: A good barber: don’t be afraid to ask questions; they can be your greatest resources. A hairdryer: you’d be surprised what you can do with one! Product: know what type works for you, and don’t be afraid to try new ones and play around with your hair. TL: What got you into this creative profession? PT: I’m a third-generation barber. But I was going to college for premed, and I just got so tired of school and feeling stagnant that I thought I would try out the family business.

TL: What advice would you give men out there? PT: Don’t vigorously dry your hair with a towel. And, unless you get very dirty, you may not need to wash your hair every day. TL: What’s your favorite hair tip? PT: Don’t wear a hat the day of your haircut. TL: Where do you go, or who do you look to, for hair inspiration? PT: I feel like “movies and magazines” is too obvious of an answer, but it’s true. Every time I create a hairstyle for someone, I ask them what models/celebrities/ athletes they want to look like, and I can usually make something for them.

JO: A misconception about barbers, specifically, is that we can tend to get stereotyped by people by the way we may look or how they think we act. Barbering is an art; it’s not all about cutting hair. There’s a different passion behind

just cutting hair. It’s more than just a haircut for me. TL: What got you into this creative profession? JO: My Uncle Rene. He was a really good barber here in Lakeland and passed away a couple years ago. So, just carrying on his legacy. TL: What hair advice would you give all the men out there? JO: Have fun with the hairstyles you choose. Hair always grows back. Try new things to spice it up. TL: Where do you go, or who do you look to, for hair inspiration? JO: I’m always on Instagram looking for new trends. I have really been liking the more minimal and natural styles that have been coming out recently.

A go-to style product for an everyday look, whether it’s a pomade, texture powder, or a curl cream. And a blow dryer to help complete the look. It’s a craft that needs to be, first off, perfected and not rushed. Those extra minutes we take can be

TL: What got you into this creative profession? JZ: Being able to just be me; have my tattoos, wild hair, and my savage beard. Being able to meet people from different walks in life and learn from each other. And every day is a different day with another canvas of hair. I never have a boring moment. TL: What hair advice would you give all the men out there? JZ: Spoil yourself with a good haircut experience with a well-trained professional. And be experimental with your hair. Ask your barber or stylist for their opinion on what they would recommend doing. TL: Your favorite hair tip? JZ: Shampoo regularly! And be educated on the proper way of styling your hair and how much product to use.

I started Mikah’s cut by doing a mid-skin fade. He wanted to do a more slicked-back look keeping the length on top. A modern twist of a 1950s’style haircut. othing makes us feel more vulnerable than to be seen. In a society where it’s easy to mask our imperfections, we’re challenged every day to nurture our authentic self. Over the years, one of the biggest lessons for me has been to truly care for my skin –– flaws and all –– with ingredients that nourish its cells. You see, our skin is so much more than the epidermis (the surface that we see every day). It’s a proven defense mechanism, intricately crafted, that lets us know how we’re really doing. While we may walk through life overusing the two words “I’m fine” on a regular basis, our skin takes the bold initiative to let us know how our insides are actually feeling. Something I realized early on is that when we create a consistent routine to care for our skin, we will reap the benefit of a healthy, vibrant face that makes people want to ask, “What’s the secret?” But first, we must accurately identify what skin type we are. The common faux-pas when it comes to skincare is people often misidentify their own skin. Throughout my middle school years and on to my later college

years, breakouts were completely inevitable for me. Because I had such acne-prone skin, I began to think I had oily skin and spent hundreds of dollars treating my skin with products (filled with harsh chemicals, by the way) that would strip my skin of its nourishment, leading to usual itchiness, lack of moisture, and premature wrinkling. My hopeful spirit led me to try popular name brands, such as Proactiv and Neutrogena, but my skin still wasn’t receiving the rejuvenation it needed. Not sure of your skin type? Schedule a consultation with a certified aesthetician, and trust me when I say you’ll never be the same. If you’re anything like me, then you’re a normal skin type. The tricky part about us normal ones is finding the right products that simply work best for us individually –– because your skin wasn’t meant to be cookie cutter. CRYOTH E R APY Cryotherapy is a technique where the body undergoes a treatment in extremely cold temperature for up to three minutes. It’s a great treatment for athletes and those recovering from inflammation, and for dealing with joint or muscle pain. or some, the last time a vitamin was consumed may have been a cartoonshaped gummy that served as a daily multivitamin. Others may have a strict regimen of vitamins and supplements that are consumed daily. Regardless of where you land on the spectrum, it’s safe to say there is a vast range of consumers within the vitamins and supplements market. Overall, many Americans either daily or on occasion take dietary supplements and vitamins. In fact, according to a 2018 report from the Council for Responsible Nutrition, about 75 percent of U.S. adults regularly take them. When discussing vitamins and supplements, it’s important to first note that modern diets often lack what our bodies need to stay healthy. Mass production has left many Americans nutrient deficient in their everyday diets alone. Before considering adding additional vitamins and supplements to your diet, evaluate if you are getting enough nutrients through your food first. “Our bodies are almost always vitamin and mineral deficient. Most of our food-and-water sources and quality are poor. We are often suffering from insufficiencies,” says Healthy Habits owner Joe McKee. A balanced diet contains plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains which offers a mix of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that our body needs. There’s no substitute for a balanced and nutritious diet. However, even when we feel like

we are consuming a nutrient-dense diet, issues like experiencing stress, sleeping poorly, or not getting regular exercise can creep into our healthy lifestyle and impact how our bodies absorb nutrients. Having a regular vitamin and supplement routine may be a helpful foundation for our health to assist in filling in the gaps when this may be the case. But with many vitamin combos out there (and since 75 percent of us are already regularly consuming these additional supplements), what should we be paying attention to? “Some important details when buying supplements is to buy from reputable companies,” says McKee. “Purity and accuracy of labeling of contents is important. As a general rule, supplement makers are not highly regulated.” McKee notes that a large amount of the vitamins and supplements sold in our country are sourced from other countries, so it’s important to check the purity of the raw materials within those products. “Look for certifications like USDA organic, non-GMO, and similar indicators of quality. The quality of the package is often telling,” he says. We’ve compiled a list of vitamins and supplements to consider adding to your diet to help fill in the gaps and supplement what might be missing from an already nutrientdense diet. But be sure you do the research and be informed first. Learn about the potential benefits and any risk that additional vitamins and supplements might pose, and consult your healthcare provider to determine what is best for your overall health.

SHOPPING HEALTHY THIS YEAR CAN BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO GET CREATIVE, LEARN SOMETHING NEW, AND SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE.

Like most kids born in the ’90s, I was raised on the good stuff — mac n’ cheese, tuna fish sandwiches, and hot dogs. In high school, I was either eating bland salads and carrot sticks, or binging on greasy pizza and hot Cheetos. In my mind, there was no in-between. At the time, being healthy meant eating like a rabbit and depriving myself of any food that brought me joy. Needless to say, it makes my heart very happy that we now live in a time when things like avocado toast and decadent lattes are a part of a happy and healthy lifestyle. It wasn’t until I visited the island of Corsica, France, that I realized I was missing the mark when it came to being healthy. During my two-week vacation, we ate the most amazing, soul-filling foods. We would spend hours cooking and grazing on roasted meats, grilled vegetables, and funky cheeses, all while sipping on wine. I met a distant relative who was over 100 years old and still climbing a tall flight of stairs to her little home each day. Every meal was like experiencing real food for the very first time, and there was never a shortage of decadent treats or crusty bread. It’s an experience that I cherish

and intend on reliving again someday. By the time I arrived back to the States, something in me had clicked. It was so refreshing to see that I didn’t need to deprive myself of tasty food in order to treat my body right. In fact, I had seen that food could bring joy and bliss and also fuel your body with excellent nutrition. So I dove into the health food scene and learned all that I could. I read labels and looked up ingredients, and watched way too many Netflix documentaries. And in the end, I discovered that cooking at home with ingredients you name and recognize is the best way to feed your body well. It’s important to listen to your body and discover what works for you. No one specific way of eating works for everyone, because all of our bodies are so different. So have no fear — you will not have to throw out everything in your pantry in order to start eating healthy! All it takes is making small steps towards buying better and slowly cultivating a positive mindset around eating foods that make you feel good. Shopping healthy this year can be an opportunity for you to get creative, learn something new, and simplify your life.

Let’s start with a game plan. 01. PLAN YOUR MEALS BEFORE YOU HIT THE GROCERY STORE.

You know all those Pinterest boards that are full of beautiful, colorful recipes that you’ve been hoarding for years? It is time to set down the bowl of ramen noodles and put them to use! If you want to successfully shop healthy, you have to plan ahead. Otherwise, you end up grabbing a bunch of ingredients that you’ll never use, because you have no idea what to do with them. Just as importantly, you want to plan meals that are fun and flavorful, but also practical for a busy schedule. Nobody has time to spend three hours cooking dinner every night. But you also don’t want everything to be so simple that you get bored and ditch those recipes for the drive-thru. One of the ways I do that is by picking one fun new recipe to try out each week. Sometimes that means preparing a cheesy vegetable quiche that I can quickly heat up for breakfast each morning. Or baking a spicy eggplant shakshuka for dinner one night and trying to nail that perfect runny yolk. Pick one recipe each week that takes a little longer to prepare but that will make eating healthy fun and adventurous. Then balance that out with other meal ideas that are faster and simpler to make. And try using shortcuts that are still healthy, like buying rotisserie chicken to shred up for homemade burrito bowls. Small substitutions like that can save you tons of time and help keep you on track. For lunches, I stick to the classic combination of meat, carb, and vegetable. For example, plan to bake a batch of sweet potatoes, roasted broccoli, and shredded beef to portion out for the week. Spice things up

a bit with seasonings and herbs that bump up the flavors of your meals. Making sauces at home is another amazing way to switch up your meal prep while also avoiding all the preservatives and sugars that are often found in store-bought sauces. That’s the key — make it fun, make it flavorful, but don’t overwhelm yourself.

02. MAKE A GROCERY LIST AND STICK TO IT.

You’ve got a perfectly balanced menu of meals planned for the week, so now it’s time to build a grocery list. Go through each recipe and make a list of the ingredients that you don’t already have at home. Then, when you get to the store, STICK TO YOUR LIST. But what about those BOGO Oreos or that really great coupon you have for Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? Friends, staying committed to your grocery list will not only help you avoid buying the junk you’re trying to avoid, but it will also save you tons of money in the long run. Shopping healthy is already looking easier!

Organic produce isn’t always available or affordable, so buy where it counts. When you’re planning to consume the outer layer of a fruit or vegetable, try to avoid pesticides that are typically found on tomatoes, grapes, potatoes, berries, and spinach. If you can’t peel and discard the outside, like a banana or avocado, then look for organic. Otherwise, shop local! Buying what’s in season means your produce will be fresh.

Look for the Certified Organic and Certified Humanely Raised labels. Organic chickens are fed only organic food and are required to have access to the outdoors. Certified humane farms have to provide a higher standard of living for their chickens from hatching to slaughter. Happier chickens are healthier chickens, which means a healthier you. Also, try a cut of meat that still contains the bones or skin. You’ll save money and notice a big difference in juiciness and flavor!

03. SHOP THE OUTER AISLES.

You may have heard this before, but it’s one of the best tips for shopping healthy. Take a walk around the grocery store and you’ll notice that fresh items aren’t kept in those middle aisles. The produce, meats, and even the deli and bakery are all located on the outer walls of each store. Staying away from the inner aisles can help you avoid a lot of temptation and keep you focused on the ingredients you’ve already made plans to use. Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. I personally love crunchy and salty snacks, and I don’t think life should be lived without those foods that bring you genuine joy. So instead of heading for the potato chips, try grabbing a big bag of popcorn kernels. Go old school and pop them yourself on the stove in coconut oil, and sprinkle with sea salt and a little granulated garlic while warm. You’ll be surprised how little things like this can be super satisfying and end up saving you money, too.

04. READ LABELS BEFORE YOU BUY.

This can be one of the most intimidating parts of shopping healthy, especially when you’re just getting started. You pick up one box to read the label and you’re faced with an ingredient list that’s a mile long and essentially unrecognizable.

Processed sugar is a major contributor to the rise of Metabolic Syndrome, which can cause high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

Here are a few simple tips to help you avoid the junk and select better options when you do need something from those inner aisles of the grocery store. -Avoid long ingredient lists. The longer the list, the less likely it is that all the ingredients are quality. Of course, there are exceptions, like when you buy a mix that contains 10 different types of roasted nuts. But for the most part, highquality and healthy foods contain much fewer ingredients. “Natural” doesn’t always mean natural. Believe it or not, companies can use this word on their packaging freely. Although the USDA has a loose definition for what the term “natural” means, no inspections are conducted and food producers are not required to hold any sort of certification in order to use this term on their products. As a consumer, that can be really frustrating. But awareness and education are the best ways we can improve our food choices! -Avoid high fructose corn syrup (and other processed sugars). This additive is chemically made in a lab and is a cheap alternative to sugar that was created when the government imposed sugar taxes in the ’70s. It’s also a major contributor to the rise in Adolescent Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome, which can cause high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. Yikes. -Look things up. If you can’t read it or pronounce it, it’s probably a hidden form of preservative, sugar, or filler. Take a quick picture of the ingredient list when you’re at the store, and do some research when you get home. What you learn might surprise you (or scare you!). On the other hand, remember the first time you saw the word “quinoa”? Sometimes a product or ingredient might look foreign, but it’s totally normal! You don’t always want to avoid something just because you aren’t sure what it is. Do your research and enjoy the journey of learning more about the foods you eat.

Wild-caught seafood should always be a priority. We do live in Florida, after all! There’s no reason to buy farm-raised seafood when we have access to fresh, beautiful seafood all year long. Did you know that salmon gets its color naturally from the krill and plankton that it eats in the ocean? Farm-raised salmon is fed kibble, so the flesh turns out grey. Farmers use pigmenting supplements or dyes to make sure the salmon turns pink before hitting shelves. Yikes. So next time you’re picking up seafood, get wild-caught. Fresh, never frozen fillets are always a better option, too. The difference in taste and texture is well worth it!

Stress in today’s culture is unavoidable. We all deal with it. Some handle it better than others, but at some point in your life you will encounter stress, and it is important to understand how stress affects your mental health as well as how to manage your reaction to it. There is a newer method of treatment for stress that is gaining popularity, and it is the idea of Lifestyle Medicine.

ifestyle Medicine is defined by the Journal of American Medical Association “as evidencebased practice of assisting individuals and their families to adopt and sustain behaviors that can improve health and quality of life.” Sounds pretty broad? It is. However, as you dig deeper into this concept, the preventative and restorative nature of the techniques used within Lifestyle Medicine can have profound effects and influence on learning how to manage your stress and your emotions. The beauty of this theory is the uniqueness to each individual and the assistance of experimenting and building your life around the people, things, beliefs, and experiences that improve, reduce, and prevent stress overload, especially stress that can lead to disease. Your overall health and mental health are connected. They cannot be separated. So,

understanding how they impact one another is vital to good mental health. For example, many digestive issues are linked to stress, anxiety, and depression. When you treat one, you are often treating the other. So it is crucial to consider your lifestyle in learning to manage or even cure the symptoms. As a licensed therapist, I explore my clients’ medical history because often there are correlations to the stress, anxiety, and depression they are experiencing. We also assess their relationships, environments, interests, habits, and beliefs about themselves and the world. All of these elements are relevant to the quality of their mental health. Lifestyle Medicine considers a variety of factors in a person’s life. However, the following is a list of the most common to reflect on and explore in your own life, as well as suggestions for cultivating them to improve your overall mental health.

NUTRITION We have heard this taught over and over again: “You are what you eat.” And there is actual truth to that statement. Nutrition science is more solid than it has ever been, and the link to food and mood has been proven. What you eat directly affects how you feel. For instance, those struggling with depression tend to show a strong link to high carbohydrate intake. You want to slow down and consider this: how is the food you are eating making you feel? Am I tired, sluggish, energized, still hungry, overweight, etc.? Start reducing the foods that are making you feel physically terrible and you will notice an increase in brain health. REFLECTION QUESTION: After taking an honest assessment of the food I am eating, what is one thing I can begin to change that will directly impact my emotions and mood thus improving my overall mental health?

FITNESS Exercise is still one of the top treatments for anxiety, stress, and depression outside of therapy and medication (when necessary). The Mayo Clinic reports that the release of “feel-good” endorphins and its ability to take your mind off of your worries are significant reducers of anxiety. Exercise is a healthy coping skill and allows your body to release pent-up energy from your daily stress level. Even if you hate exercise, find something you like and think outside the box. There are so many classes to take these days.

No more excuses. Get moving! REFLECTION QUESTION: What is a realistic goal to set for developing an exercise routine? SLEEP Sleep is undervalued in American culture. However, it directly affects mood and mental health. Some people just need more sleep then others. It’s OK. Own it but get it. Difficulty sleeping is one the first indicators of a mental health problem. We always assess a client’s sleep history and habits. Practice good sleep habits. There are tons of books and resources.

Set your room up so that it is a calming space and only used to sleep. The ideal temperature for sleep is 72 degrees. Turn off your technology about 30 minutes before bed so your body and mind begin to recognize that it is time to go to bed, and try to stay on a schedule. Beware of alcohol intake. According to the Harvard Medical School, alcohol is a sleep sabotager. It gives a false sense of sleep. You may fall asleep quick, but the quality of sleep will suffer. REFLECTION QUESTION: What is one change I need to make to improve my sleep habits?

RELATIONSHIPS We could do a whole article on how relationships affect mental health, but the general principle is that quality, healthy relationships lead to better mental health. One of the primary ways to treat depression is to advise one to get connected and in community. Isolation makes it worse. Social anxiety is all about caring too much what people think about you and overanalyzing

yourself in social situations. To conquer it, you have to embrace being social and just do it. Work on forgiveness and reduce the number of toxic, drama-filled people you surround yourself with, and choose an inner circle who you trust and will encourage, building you up. REFLECTION QUESTION: Who do I need to distance from my life that may be causing me more stress then I realized?

RELAXATION Learn what makes YOU relax. This takes excessive experimentation. Try new things and get out of your comfort zone. Every person is different, and often it is a combination of techniques that allow you to relax. Some of us (self-included as this is an area I greatly struggle and have to work extra hard to make happen) do not spend time taking breaks and resting. When the body is in a

consistent state of stress, it is tense and rigid. It needs time to unwind and breathe. Many diseases come from the constant tension of stress. REFLECTION QUESTION: What do I need to say “no” to in order to have the time to relax and rest so that I can operate in a lower state of stress? FUN Fun is not just for kids. Who decided that as we grow up, we are no longer allowed to have fun? Fun is critical to quality mental health. Laughing is often a part of fun, and

laughter is considered medicine. When is the last time you bellylaughed like a kid? If you have to, get around some kids and learn how to play. Try new things. Meet new people that have different interests. Get out of your comfort zone. Get over your fear of embarrassment and let go. REFLECTION QUESTION: What is one thing I have always wanted to try but, because of fear, haven’t — even though I think it would be fun? SERVING OTHERS Giving back to others is always

correlated with a boost in mood and overall emotional health. People who regularly serve others report overall life satisfaction. We spend enough time thinking about ourselves, and self-absorption is connected to low self-worth, depression, stress, and anxiety. Get your mind off yourself and go help someone else. It could be a friend, family member, or any number of the amazing organizations we have in this community. There is never an excuse not to serve in Lakeland! TIME IN NATURE

Those who have some level of spiritual connection and belief in something greater than themselves report greater levels of happiness. Finding a sense of purpose and meaning as well as community are shown to feed a sense of wellness. Spiritual practices often have meditative elements, including prayer, stillness, and reflection which all lead to improved mental health.

We live in the Sunshine State. This means no excuses for staying indoors watching Netflix, playing video games, and just lounging. There is a time and place for that. However, our bodies and minds need to get outside. There is something about connecting to creation and nature that is good for the soul. Find a place that you love to go and take the time to incorporate it daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly. Even gardening is a great way to connect to the earth. Learn to appreciate the meditative aspect of being outside. Walk your neighborhood, explore one of the many trails, go to the beach, find an
