Music possesses a power that transcends words. And, we’re honored to be in the business of sharing music with you. It’s in our joys and sorrows. Our fondest memories and our greatest fears (we’re looking at you, Jaws). Music connects us. And, while music can’t bring us together in the same room right now, it’s still connecting us each day. Stay tuned… We still have a lot to say.

’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the most avid sports enthusiast. Often picked last in kickball and even opting to take physical education online so I could remain in an art elective in high school (Yes, that is a thing. Thanks, Florida Virtual School.), my understanding of sports is minimal, to say the least. Yet, the irony of it all is that I have always found a way to circle back to sports in my roles while at The Lakelander. In my last issue of The Lakelander before taking a brief hiatus in 2013, I was the guest sports editor (complete with a precious bio photo of me sporting a little white dress to really suit the title). When I returned to the team in 2018, my first issue back was the Sports issue. Perhaps there’s always been something sports wanted to teach me. Through my experience in writing on this topic that I’m not too familiar with, I will admit that I have garnered a deeper appreciation for athleticism and

the community that surrounds organized sports. Whether an active participant or sideline spectator, sports play an important role in our society because they unite us in a unique way. There is an indisputable camaraderie that a group of people can possess simply by rooting for the same team. In this issue of The Lakelander, we’re highlighting the many ways sports play an active role in our community. From highlighting teams with impressive records, to individuals who have utilized their athletic platforms to help others, these stories remind us that the spirit of athleticism has greatly enriched our community. They make us feel a part of the team, even if we’re not on the official roster.

C O N T R I B U T O R S THE WRITERS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS THAT MAKE THE LAKELANDER

JOE HEPLER Joe Hepler works full-time at Southeastern University and does freelance content research for churches. He and his wife, Hollie, have a young son named JC. They also have two dogs, Bruno and Bastian, who Joe spends an inordinate amount of time with. When Joe isn’t spending time with his family, he enjoys listening to podcasts, reading, watching TV and movies, and supporting his beloved Miami Hurricanes.

“The First of Many” written by Charmaine Patterson, pg. 74

CHARMAINE PATTERSON As a Lakeland newbie, Charmaine Patterson finds any excuse to write while exploring the city. In her free time, she loves traveling, trying new restaurants (or recipes), and snuggling up with a good book. Charmaine has an M.A. in journalism from Columbia College Chicago and a B.A. in advertising from Michigan State University (go Spartans!). She and her husband, Mark, have been married for three years.

JASON STEPHENS Can you recall your first writing job? It was for a start-up magazine in Chicago (after a brutal yet rewarding first year of grad school). I never realized my love for writing until I had to do it ALL the time. After that, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. Working for this magazine was an amazing experience because it was my first time being able to tell the stories of everyday people from different cultures and backgrounds. As The Lakelander’s newest member of the team, what are you most excited about in your role as staff writer? I love the idea of sharing feel-good stories about the heart of the city. What drew me to The Lakelander, other than its amazing design, is that it spreads positivity from the typically unseen people who help make Lakeland what it is. It stands out in a world of

22

noise and negativity, which is really refreshing. How do you overcome writer’s block? Binge-watching Netflix! Thanks for not judging. In all seriousness, whenever I experience the dark cloud of writer’s block, I have to take a step away or else I would probably never finish it. Whether it’s binging my favorite show or cooking a meal, any distraction is welcome even for a moment. After that, I can return to whatever I’m writing with fresh and new ideas. What does your ideal weekend in Lakeland look like? The small-town feel of Lakeland makes it a cozy place to be on the weekends. On a perfect weekend, I would go to the farmer’s market, thrift shopping, walk around Lake Hollingsworth, and top it off with Gillespie’s Bourbon Pecan ice cream from The Joinery.

M E T R O NEW AND NOTABLE IN LAKELAND

THE GOLD* STANDARD *AND SILVER AND BRONZE, TOO

How three world-class athletes set an example for us all in fighting racism in every arena of life

This iconic photo of Olympic sprinters Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and Peter Norman is one of the most famous protest images in history. Just like photographs of Tiananmen Square, Kent State, and Rosa Parks, these are striking visuals with which we are all too familiar but often unaware of the full story that led to these moments being captured on film. The year 1968 is remembered as one of the most tumultuous in modern history. The Tet Offensive, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and mass student protests worldwide with thousands of civilian casualties had all preceded the Mexico City Olympic Games in October. Meanwhile, American sociologist and civil rights activist Harry Edwards, PhD had founded the Olympic Project for Human Rights, an organization led by athletes to protest segregation in the United States and around the world and specifically segregation within sports. Initially the group sought to boycott the ’68 Olympics entirely, if certain conditions weren’t met. Although the boycott largely failed, athletes who supported the OPHR continued to voice their messages of anti-racism and antisegregation. Notably, the U.S. Olympic rowing team, comprised entirely of white Harvard students, wrote hundreds of handwritten letters to other members of the American Olympic delegation encouraging them to take a stand for racial justice. These actions resulted in an official censure from the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Following their record-shattering 200-meter race, Smith, Norman, and Carlos (gold, silver, and bronze, respectively) were to take their places on the dais for the medal ceremony. African American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos had been discussing how they would use this moment to shed light on racial injustice and had decided on a few symbolic gestures: They were both shoeless as a symbol of black poverty, Smith wore a black scarf for black pride, and Carlos wore beads around his neck for those lynched and killed during slavery and Jim Crow. Lastly, they both wore the round OPHR button pinned to their tracksuits. Many often overlook that Australian silver-medalist Peter Norman is also wearing the OPHR button in solidarity. Norman was raised in a devout Salvation Army family and was an outspoken opponent of the White Australia movement. The button, which was banned by the International Olympic Committee, was given to him just before the ceremony by Paul Hoffman, a member of the U.S. rowing team.

HOW CAN YOU ASK SOMEONE TO LIVE IN THE WO R L D A N D N OT H AV E S O M E T H I N G T O S AY A B O U T INJUSTICE?” – JOHN CARLOS

All three went home to intense criticism for their actions in both the media and within professional athletic establishments but are ultimately remembered as pioneering figures who used the spotlight of athletic achievement

I SS U E 5 6

Smith, Norman, and Carlos each wore the OPHR button during the medal ceremony.

to take a stand against racism. Smith and Carlos both received the Arthur Ashe Award at the 2008 ESPYs for advocating for equality in the face of adversity. In 2006, the U.S. Track and Field Federation proclaimed October 9, the day of his funeral, as “Peter Norman Day.” These three men saw their athletic platform as not just as an opportunity but an obligation to take a stand against racism. Their example shows us that speaking up is not a responsibility to be held only by politicians and professional activists, and that the fight for justice belongs to us all — regardless of color or nationality. John Carlos has said, “How can you ask someone to live in the world and not have something to say about injustice?” That implores each of us to find our voice and use it to educate and advocate within our spheres of influence no matter the size. From humble kitchen tables to extravagant stadiums, the message that all men are created equal must be heard.

Pickleball, Anyone? All about one of the fastest-growing sports and where to play it

If you’re looking for a new game to get your heart racing, pickleball might be the sport for you. Pickleball was invented in 1965 by three dads: Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum, whose kids were tired of their typical summer activities. Since the 1970s, pickleball has grown from a family pastime to a paddle-court sport with formalized rules. The fast-paced competition combines various elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. It can be played indoors and outdoors on a badminton-size court and a slightly modified tennis net with a paddle and a Wiffle ball. According to the USA Pickleball Association, pickleball has had a 650% increase in players over the last six years and has been incorporated into physical education. programs, parks and recreation centers, correctional facilities, camps, YMCAs, and retirement communities.

LAKELANDERS GO PRO

From NASCAR to the NFL, here are the stats on the professional athletes who call Lakeland home.

Lakeland might appear to be an unassuming small town, but the city has served as the breeding ground for many athletes who have gone pro. Some of these hometown heroes were born and raised in Lakeland. Others relocated to the area as a child or teenager before taking on the big leagues. Whatever their journey includes, their determination, ambition, and dedication to their respective games helped them go pro. Their accomplishments have not only helped put Lakeland on the map but created a unanimous ambiance of pride for locals to cheer them on from home base. AP Photo/Keith Srakocic

REGIONAL NEWS & STORIES – CURATED FOR LAKELANDERS

We

recognize that with Lakeland’s growth comes influence beyond our city limits. Along with Lakeland, Polk County is made up of many other thriving cities and towns that continue to put Central Florida on the map. In fact, the U.S. Census showed that this area of the state showed a 2.94% growth rate in the past year alone. The rising population may be greatly due to the rising opportunities. Along with its ideal location between two major cities, Polk County is home to great diversity and has created many opportunities for the people already living here. This is obvious through the many large distribution facilities located throughout, like Amazon, FedEx, Walmart, and more. The area is also made up of many small businesses with rich histories that span generations and continue to add to the diversity that exists in these cities today.

The Lakelander has now been expanded to include more content that highlights our neighboring cities in our Greater Lakeland section. The area between Tampa and Orlando is far more than orange groves and cypress trees — although that’s a part of its charm, too. We believe there are even more stories to tell beyond our city limits. Stories that are for all readers, wherever they may be. Welcome to Greater Lakeland.

The Historic L.B. Brown House The legacy of a restored Central Florida home and the impact it has left on our county’s African American heritage Clifton Lewis moved to Bartow in 1989, when the historic L.B. Brown House was facing demolition after falling into neglect following the death of Brown’s daughter, Lavinia Thomas, the home’s last resident. After Lewis learned about the fate of the house, he founded the Neighborhood Improvement Corp. and led a successful quest to restore the home. Lawrence B. Brown, a man born into slavery in North Florida, came to Bartow in the 1880s and became an entrepreneur. In addition to his business endeavors, he was a self-taught carpenter who went on to construct several houses, including the two-story Victorian structure, complete with porches on both floors and elegant exterior details, including wooden scrollwork and porch balusters.

Once Lewis restored the home, he created an event intended to be a scholarly conference where academics would examine historical issues. Eventually the entertainment elements of the festival took priority, turning the event into the festival it is today. In honor of this past year’s anniversary, Lewis revived an element of the scholarly talks, featuring Canter Brown, a history professor and Fort Meade native, who moderated a panel discussion titled “African-American Defenders of Freedom.” The festival attracts a large local crowd as well as visitors from other cities, some even travelling from out of state to enjoy the event, and serves as an opportunity to promote the county’s AfricanAmerican heritage. Joe on the Go

Amonie Jo’s Coffee & Delights celebrates one year of business. In November 2017, a month after their mother passed away from ovarian cancer, Angie, Patrice, and V’asiah Williams were shopping at a thrift store when they noticed an old Ford bus parked behind the building. They had been looking for a way to use the money their mom left them and thought starting a business would be a good investment. “We asked the owner if it was for sale, and, after purchasing it, we decided that we would turn it into a coffee shop,” Patrice says. “Amonie Jo’s was born.” Named after their mother, Amonie Joseph, the coffee shop recently celebrated one year in business. No doubt part of its staying power is the sisters’ ability to connect with their customers.

“Besides being business owners, we’re people persons,” Patrice says. “As much as we love sharing our story, we also take interest in getting to know others and their story.” Of course, it might also be the chai tea lattes (their mother’s original recipe), the guava and cheese pastry (which they order from a Mexican bakery in Haines City), or just a regular cup of joe, which comes from Ethos Coffee Roasters in Lakeland. The bus, which until recently was located at Party Unlimited, will be more mobile this coming year, in spots like the Winter Haven Farmers Market on Saturdays and other community events.

A FIELDHOUSE OF DREAMS A new addition to Winter Haven’s skyline came to fruition in early January as the AdventHealth Fieldhouse officially opened for business.

T

he 83,000-square-foot complex is the feather in the cap of Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes Park Master Plan, a multi-phase renovation to the more than 69acre site. It’ll provide what city officials hope will be the primary gateway to the city, given its location along U.S. 17 and Cypress Gardens Boulevard. The project was a long time coming. Since the 1960s, the site on Lake Lulu had included a baseball training facility, practice fields, the Orange Dome, the city’s wastewater treatment plant, and, since 1975, the Southwest Complex building and “Rowdy” Gaines Olympic Pool. Upgrades were needed, and community members began expressing a desire for better amenities to meet standards of similar facilities. “The development of a fieldhouse-type facility

was actually first contemplated around 2012,” says Assistant City Manager Michael Stavres, “but it wasn’t until 2014 that the idea began to gain support from the city’s and county’s elected bodies.” At that point, it was time to start scouting comparable projects throughout Florida and the Northeast, in states like Pennsylvania and New Jersey, to home in on the direction of the project. The city hired Lakeland-based Straughn Trout Architects to oversee the comprehensive design of the new facility, as well as the renovations to the Chain of Lakes Complex, which houses Theatre Winter Haven, Ridge Art Association, and the pool. The new building broke ground in October 2018 and, says Straughn Trout Managing Principal Tim Hoeft, centers on a 42,000-square-foot multi-use gym wrapped with a 360-degree second-floor observation area.

The AdventHealth Fieldhouse & Conference Center is considered Phase I (outlined in green) of a multi-phase project that will revamp the entire 69-plus-acre Chain of Lakes site.

It’s perfect for large sporting competitions like volleyball, gymnastics, cheerleading, and, of course, basketball. In fact, Lakeland Magic has signed on to make the Fieldhouse its permanent training facility, utilizing its six courts, renovated and expanded locker rooms, and office space. The Fieldhouse also includes a fitness center and classroom space. In addition to the Lakeland Magic, the Youth Basketball of America will relocate its headquarters from Orlando to the new facility. “Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing has already booked more than 40 events for the Fieldhouse this year,” Hoeft says. “These announcements have proven that the space is not only a recreational facility — it’s also a driver of our local economy.”

We asked Hoeft a few more questions about the project. What were the main design objectives and goals for the space? Tim Hoeft: Although the City had outlined the general goals of the project in its Master Plan exercise, we worked closely with key staff and stakeholders to establish the following design principles: • Create iconic architecture that distinguishes a primary gateway to the city and embodies the compelling and unique character of the Winter Haven community. • Elevate the facility’s functional dexterity to operate as a major regional destination. • Accelerate public and private development in and around the park. • Accommodate the full spectrum of on-site functions and user typologies with multi-generational design elements. • Incorporate a training facility for the Lakeland Magic with shared-use spaces and maximum flexibility. • Develop enhanced conference and meeting spaces to support a variety of community and professional functions. • Upgrade the existing facility to improve accessibility, energy efficiency, and life safety elements to meet contemporary standards.

The ground floor of the new AdventHealth Fieldhouse & Conference Center centers around a 42,000-squarefoot multi-use gymnasium. More than 40 events have already been booked for the Fieldhouse this year.

Did you take inspiration from other structures that have accomplished the same goals? TH: During the master planning phase, City and County representatives visited several similar sites to gain inspiration, including ESPN Wide World of Sports and the Orlando Volleyball Academy. Our design team also consulted with Populous — one of the nation’s premier design firms that specializes in sports facilities, arenas, and convention centers. Populous was also a partner with us on the recent renovations of the RP Funding Center, and they were the design architects for Amway Arena (Orlando Magic/Solar Bears), Exploria Stadium (Orlando City Soccer Stadium), and Marlins Park. In publicly funded projects like this, the design is carefully crafted through a “form follows function” approach. In our opinion, the total facility (renovated existing building and newly constructed addition) now presents a strong holistic and unified aesthetic that is both contemporary and timeless.

“OVERCOMING THE UNKNOWNS I S A LW AY S THE BIGGEST C H A L L E N G E .” – TIM HOEFT

I SS U E 5 6

What were some of the challenges of the project? TH: Overcoming the unknowns is always the biggest challenge. These included remnants of the former wastewater treatment plant buried underground, unstable soils, and existing building deficiencies. The construction team, led by Rodda Construction and Whitehead Construction, did a great job navigating the proverbial minefield, all under an extremely challenging schedule including weather delays and coordination with the ongoing events on-site at the aquatics facility and Theatre Winter Haven. While the theatre was not formally part of the project, they have gained access to shared resources including a new lobby, elevator, concessions, and restrooms. Additionally, the former gymnasium space in the existing building will become a future black-box performance space and also accommodate a new set construction workshop.

ashion and sports have a long and remarkable relationship. Bold stripes, color-blocking, and performance fabrics have found their way into our closets and are now indispensable elements of perhaps the strongest and most recurring motifs in fashion design. The idea that putting on a garment can immediately make you feel bolder, more athletic, or part of a team speaks to the centrality of sports and athletic achievement in our culture. This particular kind of magic is a fabric woven from the inspiration and athleticism that has fascinated humans for centuries. On the flip side, sportswear has become so fashionable that the line between form and function has been blurred into sartorial oblivion. Nike made running shoes a centerpiece of style, and René Lacoste — followed by Ralph Lauren — made the tennis shirt iconic. Athletes themselves have even been key players in the fashion arena. Many have embraced personal style as a meaningful part of their brands and have brought a swagger and bravado to dressing as only an athlete could. Names like David Beckham, Serena Williams, Odell Beckham Jr., and Conor McGregor are as synonymous with their fashion-forward ensembles as they are with their exceptional performances on the field, court, and in the ring. The Lakelander is proud to introduce you to a new generation of athletes representing local teams while competing at the top of their games. And in the next few pages, they are all sporting looks that are equally influenced by classic sportswear and current streetwear trends.

Heading into the 2019-2020 men’s hockey season was a scary moment for Florida Southern College players and head coach Gilles Richard. This season was not only the first for the club hockey team, but it also touted a combination of veteran hockey players and FSC students who wanted to give the sport a try for the first time. Despite the odds, the FSC men’s hockey team proved it shouldn’t be underestimated. “[When] we started, everybody was invited to the tryouts, so I didn’t have any time to recruit,” says Richard. “It was basically who was on campus. We had about five or six guys who had hockey experience. And then some guys wanted to just try it from other sports. So, we put the gear on them and built the team from in house without any recruiting.” Fortunately, Richard says he’s pleasantly surprised with how the season went. “With their first road trip, I didn’t know what to expect. But we came out and we pushed [University of Southern Florida’s] development team to a 4-3 game, and then the next night it was a 1-0 loss. They had a lot of heart. This is our inaugural year, so it’s cool. It went shockingly awesome. Some of them were just so true to the game.”

While the mixture of experts and amateurs can be a muddied one, that’s not the story for the FSC men’s hockey team. The veteran players stepped up as leaders to take the newcomers under their wings, which Richard says isn’t always the case. “In practices, there were guys who could fly and some who were barely skating at the beginning of the year. I was so impressed with how those kids worked together and became a team early on. They accepted each other. Usually, if you’re strong in a sport, practices can get slowed down and you don’t open up. But I was shocked at how well these kids get along. They love each other; they have a blast. We

won a shootout in Wesley Chapel and they sang the whole way home. They came together really well.” Practices are more than just a way for the guys to develop their bond and improve their skills. Their off-campus home rink, the Lakeland Ice Arena, has also been a refreshing off-campus venue since it first opened its doors in September of last year. “They touch the ice three times a week for an hour and a half. They look forward to the outlet by getting off campus and getting on the ice. The kids that started [playing hockey this season] are here early, practicing all the time and trying to figure out how to get better,” says Richard.

“As a coach, you like to see development. We don’t concern ourselves with wins or losses. But how the team has come in a short time is the best part of the job.”

While the arena is a little less than seven miles away from the campus, it’s certainly a place the men of FSC hockey can call home. “They have a designated dressing room. We have a lot of ice time compared to a lot of club hockey. We have a home, and other teams don’t have a rink. They have to struggle to find practice time. We have a huge advantage here for Florida Southern to be able to have this facility,” says Richard. The advantage of having a home rink is just one factor that has helped the team grow and develop in its first of many seasons. “If you have ice time, you can get better, so they’ve come a long way. It’s nice to see how far the team has come in one season” he adds. Richard leading the men of FSC hockey was a seamless transition for the Canadian, who has been on the ice for much of his life.

“I’ve been lucky. I’m originally from Canada. I went to the University of Canada and [played] hockey, came to the States and played in the minor leagues. I ran two pro teams, started a new pro team in Augusta, Georgia, and I was the general manager and the president of two clubs.” Now, he says he’s just thankful to be able to pay it forward for the next generation of hockey stars. “I have so much gratitude for the school to take a chance on a sport like this and the rink for the partnership. This group came from really being raw to knowing positioning, and watching their skills develop over the season has been awesome to watch. As a coach, you like to see development. We don’t concern ourselves with wins or losses. But how the team has come in a short time is the best part of the job.”

says Jason Streets, who coached LCS girls soccer for 16 years. “I love this school. I graduated here, played soccer here. We won three state championships in soccer when I was here, so it’s cool seeing the soccer program continue.” The current team, which ranges from sixth graders to high school seniors, went to the semi-finals in the 2017-2018 season and the finals in the 2018-2019 season, marking their fourth appearance in the finals over the last eight years.

Right midfielder and senior, Isabel Matallana

“The girls have never won the championship in the program’s history, so that’s kind of the goal that we always shoot for. I’m praying that someday it’ll happen,” says Streets. “Getting to the finals last year was awesome because we graduated some players and we weren’t sure how well we’d do. The girls played their hearts out. Even though we lost, I was still proud.” This time around, they continued their success with a 19-1-1 season after going from 1A to 3A, a bigger district with larger schools, following a restructuring under the Florida High School Athletic Association. Streets credited the team’s recent achievement to the bond among the ladies on and off the field. “The chemistry with this group is really special,” he says. “They’re at different levels of their lives, so the maturity is different. But they really have bonded and truly love each other.” The players echoed similar sentiments, as junior and attacking midfielder Katie Carnes says their harmony is rooted in girl power.

“It’s been cool looking up to older girls and now being one of the older girls and mentoring the younger ones. We’ve grown into this close bond together. It’s like a second family.”

– ISABEL MATALLANA

“Being a female athlete proves something to guys; that we can do just what they can do and that we’re good at it. The friendships and bonds here aren’t broken. You can talk to people [who have graduated] and they’re still friends with people they used to play with,” she says. Center back and junior Eden

Guynn adds that, “Being a girl who plays sports stands out for what other kids want to do. I ran into a lady at the store and she said, ‘Hey, my daughter knows you!’ I had no idea who she was, but it made me realize that kids do know who I am, and they can look up to me. It’s awesome being a role model.” Senior, University of Kentucky-

hopeful, and right midfielder Isabel Matallana says she’s embraced friendships after playing with the team since seventh grade. “It’s been cool looking up to older girls and now being one of the older girls and mentoring the younger ones. make this time of year particularly bittersweet as Matallana and two other seniors gear up for graduation. Streets says that saying goodbye to a handful of players each season is the toughest part of his job. “Two of my seniors have been with me since eighth grade. You

78

get attached to these girls… and then they graduate, and you move on. Every year you’re losing someone who you’ve been with for a while. It can get emotional.” Still, Streets continues to look on with pride after players like Bri Folds have thrived after graduation. Folds played LCS soccer all four

TH E L A K E L A N D E R

years of high school before playing Division 1 women’s soccer at Auburn University. Most recently, she was drafted by pro soccer team North Carolina Courage with the 36th pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. She is now the first-ever LCS soccer player to be drafted by a professional team.

Center back and junior, Eden Guynn

“It’s almost beyond pride,” says Streets. “She was just as good before she was with us and is the best soccer player that has ever come out of this school; arguably one of the best that has ever come out of Polk County.” She’s noted for being a great teammate and a hard worker with a list of successes to her name to prove it. She excelled during her four years at Auburn University, setting up records and landing AllAmerican her junior year. Streets explains that she overcame struggles in her senior year, from injuries to being out of games, which makes Folds going pro even sweeter.

I SS U E 5 6

“We weren’t sure it was going to happen,” says Streets. During her senior year, Folds was playing with a lot of injuries and had to miss a lot of games. “We were hopeful because she’s absolutely deserving; we just weren’t sure.” In the whole draft, they only take 36 people. “You think about how many hundreds and hundreds of soccer players graduate every year,” says Streets. So, for Folds to get drafted was a huge victory. “LCS has never had a soccer player get drafted professionally.” If the team continues with its success, Folds could be the first of many.

As the Tigers’ official Spring Training home,

S

Lakeland has been Matthew and Ashley Boyd’s spring home for the past three years. Learn more about how the community they’ve found in this city has shaped their lives off the field.

Spring means different things to different people. For some, it means beaches and bathing suits, or taxes, cleaning, and seasonal allergies. But for Matthew and Ashley Boyd, this season means one thing:

I SS U E 5 6

Spring Training. Since 2015, when Matt was acquired by the Detroit Tigers through a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays, the dawning of another Major League Baseball season has also meant it was time for the Boyds to make the annual pilgrimage to the Tigers’ Spring Training home here in Lakeland. The Boyds’ journey to Lakeland takes them about as far as possible from their home in the Pacific Northwest while still being in the continental United States — far away from the familiarity of family and friends. It’s also far from their second home, Detroit, where they spend

nearly half the year during the regular season. Needless to say, Lakeland isn’t quite home for the Boyds. It’s not even their home away from home. But for the last five years, Lakeland has become their spring home. And if you were to ask the Boyds, they wouldn’t have it any other way. I met up with Matt and Ashley on the eve of Spring Training to ask them about what this time in Lakeland is

(Pictured Right): Ashley Boyd with their daughter, Meira, and son, Isaiah

The Lakelander: What has your Spring Training experience been like here in Lakeland? Matthew Boyd: When I was traded, coming to Lakeland was stressful because we were wondering, “Are we going to be in the Minors in Toledo? Are we going to Detroit?” So those first few years I probably didn’t enjoy Lakeland as much as I could or should have. But over the last three years it’s been different in that I truly am

I SS U E 5 6

grateful for where I am, and I love where we’re at. I love Lakeland, and it’s only now looking back where we can see how God was using it to grow us and growing Lakeland on us through the community here even when we didn’t really realize it. So, for me, I love this time. It’s two of the best months out of our year.

Being away from family and friends, we have each other but we still need community, especially now that we have two kids. Our church, Grace City, has been awesome for that. Being able to make friends with other moms and having the kids be able to make friends has been really good.

Ashley Boyd: Yeah, we always look forward to Spring Training because it’s our time to be together as a family. During the season, Matt’s so busy and on the road so much; then in the off-season, it’s kind of a whirlwind of seeing family and all the people we don’t get to see during the season. So, this time we get in Lakeland is a really intentional time for the four of us while at the same time getting to be a part of an amazing community.

TL: Three years ago, you started a non-profit organization, Kingdom Home, and you held your first fundraising event here in the area last year. Can you share about Kingdom Home and why you chose Central Florida for your event? Ashley: Kingdom Home actually started two Spring Trainings ago. We were here at the AirBnB we’ve used the last few years when we’ve been in Lakeland when I got the call from the organization

I used to work with about a children’s home in Uganda that’s in need. It’s funny, I was just telling Matt the other day after I hung up from an important phone call with our Board, “You know, a lot has seemed to happen on this patio for us and Kingdom Home over the last three years!” Matthew: We knew we wanted to start a non-profit, but we just weren’t sure what it would be exactly or when would be a good time to start it. I was in the Minors the year before, and we were still uncertain about what the next few years would look like. So, when Carl [Ralston], who founded Remember Nhu, the non-profit Ashley used to work for, called and told us about Dorothy’s story [see sidebar], we took 24 hours to talk and pray about it. We prayed and eventually we got to this place where we were like, “You know, is there ever going to be a good time to start a non-profit?” So, we

decided to go for it and just trust that God was able and He was going to make a way. From that point on, the Lord has truly provided every step of the way. When it came to our first fundraising event, it just felt right to do it here. We were like, “Where are we going to do a fundraiser? Well, we started Kingdom Home here, right? What better place to hold our first fundraiser than near the place it all began.” Between that connection and the backing of the Tigers and our church family here, we knew this is where we wanted it to be. As the 2020 MLB season gets under way, the Boyds don’t know what curveballs will get thrown their way, and that’s quite alright by them. Because no matter what, they will have their faith, each other, and a special place in their heart for this special place they’ve been able to call home for two months each spring.

The Boyds started Kingdom Home in 2018 to help put an end to child sex slavery. The organization started after the Boyds heard the incredible story of a woman named Dorothy, who had been a victim of violence and nearly sold as a child bride herself. Today, Dorothy has dedicated her life to helping children escape the injustice she once faced. Together with her husband, Dorothy selflessly brought in 36 girls who had been rescued from child sex slavery and had nowhere else to go. Kingdom Home partnered with Dorothy’s home in 2018, and today she is still caring for those 36 girls as well as her own three children. Starting with one girls’ home, Kingdom Home currently has four homes: one boys’ and three girls’, all in Uganda. kingdomhome.org

Last spring, the Boyds raised over $45,000 for Kingdom Home through local fundraisers.

You don’t want to miss it left since your ball will most likely end up in Lake Charles with its beautiful bird island. If you are lucky, your ball may be saved from going into the water by a large greenside bunker from where you are faced with a challenging shot over a steep face. Most golfers “bail” out safely to the right, but that is no bargain either since the massive collection area leaves golfers with a difficult flop shot if they have any chance of getting up and down. Golfers who hit the green are rewarded with a very makeable chance for birdie.

HISTORY

What is now the Lakeland Country Club opened in 1925 as the clubhouse for the Cleveland Heights Golf and Country Club. It was designed by Cleveland, Ohio, architect H. P. Whitworth at the behest of Cleveland real estate developer H. A. Stahl. The clubhouse was to be one of the amenities offered by Stahl’s real estate development, Cleveland Heights, on the shore of Lake Hollingsworth. Stahl’s plans were largely derailed by the collapse of the Florida land boom and the Great Depression, and he was forced in 1932 to relinquish the clubhouse and the Cleveland Heights golf course to the City of Lakeland in return for the city waiving paving assessments on unsold lots in Cleveland Heights. The city leased the building to what was previously known as the Lakeland Yacht and Country Club in 1937 and sold it to the club in the late 1950s. Date: Circa 1920s
