This year’s swim began at first light, but Alexis and Jeff, along with spotter Jane Papageorge, set out when it was still dark, about 5:15 am. Why the ear ly start? Alexis explains, “I wanted to be swimming before the winds came up on the Broads in the lake.”

As a child, life on the lake gave a lot of freedom to Alexis. She swam all the time, and perhaps this gave her the confidence to challenge herself to the swim/fundraiser for the Lake Winnipe saukee Association.
Alexis Wallace loves Lake Winnipe saukee, and she is a passionate believer in stewardship of the waters so many enjoy. With fun on the lake comes re sponsibility to protect the water quality so all can partake of the recreation and beauty in the area.

With a long history in the Lakes Region, Alexis and her husband and family have been on Lake Winnipe saukee for many years. She resides in a camp/home in Wolfeboro that has been passed down in her family. While she could have torn down the camp and put up a larger house or even sold the prop erty to a property developer, Alexis and her husband, Jeff, are happy where they are and in housing that reflects their personalities: modest, nature lov ing and responsible.
pine paneled walls, a few bedrooms, and the lake nearby. The parents re laxed, hosted barbecues and the kids frolicked in Winnipesaukee and played outside every day. The swim she undertakes each sum mer brings awareness to the Asso ciation and the lake. The first swim, which took place in August of 2020, was, Alexis admits, rather a quiet hap pening. How does Alexis, a woman who cares deeply about Lake Winnipesau kee show her respect for Winnipesau kee’s water? She swims every day, and she appreciates the beauty of the lake.
She says she does her swim with a crawl for about 2/3 of the way, and in termittently does a backstroke and el ementary backstroke, never stopping during the swim. Certainly, the swim is tiring, but with proper training ahead of time, Alexis completed her swim.
Wolfeboro cottage prepared Alexis for her fundraising swim and she is aware of how the lake has changed over the years. Recalling her childhood on Win nipesaukee, Alexis says, “When I was a child, the lake was clearer.” Thus, it is the good work of the Lake Winni pesaukee Association that gives Alexis hope for the future of the lake and other area bodies of water.

Water macroinvertebrates, such as crayfish and dragonfly larvae, are important parts of the aquatic systems they live in, and their presence (or absence) can even tell us a bit about water quality. But it can be a challenge to survive in water, so some have become good at hiding, others have strong legs to hold on in rushing currents, and still others create retreats to keep themselves safe. Caddisflies even use their own silk and local materials like pebbles and leaves to create cases to live in- some of these cases have been used in jewelry! Participants will take a peek inside this world with NLRA educators who will have substrate samples from different

I have 2 unique guacamole recipes that are different from the usual as well as from each other, but in subtle ways as to not diminish the authenticity of what guac is all about. This first one adds some smoky chipotle flavor as well as everyone’s favorite, bacon. As a rule, this will serve 4-5, so double it up as needed, maybe more. This will be done in 15 minutes at most, less if you cook the bacon in advance. If so, just lightly microwave it before adding as the drippings help the flavor.

One of the most popular dips out there for many is guacamole, most evident when I am in an authentic Mexican restaurant as the tableside “Guac” makers are almost as busy as the bartenders building margaritas. I do know many who don’t like to make it for fear of it losing it bright green color, which is why it should be made minutes before serving, but it only takes a couple minutes to make, just like the “guac” makers at the restaurant. Keep in mind however that if you want to make it in advance to serving, make sure you lay plastic wrap directly on top of the guac to keep all air out as it’s the air that makes it turn color. If it dulls a little in

OK, I have a weakness, well many actually. I love beer like most of us kitchen sweat hogs. After a 12–14hour shift in a hot kitchen, a quick run to the bar was usually the norm. Some of my favorite recipes have beer as an ingredient, sometimes the main one. This is a major reason why Oktoberfest season is one of my favorites, and a great cheddar beer soup is one of my favorite soups, so why wouldn’t I love a couple of great beer cheddar dips that hit the spot? The first one is done in a slow cooker not requiring much effort, and the second one is done in a skillet, whether inside or on the grill. The time of year often dictates where I cook it, and which one to cook, but these dips are great. The slow cooker dip is tangy and smoky and so good. Although
Thanks for popping back in for more food fun my friends. I know summer is always a great time to entertain for friends and family where so many are on vacation and the kids have been sprung from school, but reality has now set in for many as although we are still technically in the summer season, and even though the weather still says summer, the traffic and lack of crowds say otherwise. That by no means we can’t continue to entertain although for the most part, most get togethers are strictly on the weekends where in the heart of summer, every day can feel like a weekend to many.
One of my favorite themes when I entertain is utilizing fun and tasty dips. I’m not saying the entire menu is dips, but a dip or 2 can be a great way to start a party or get together. I love hosting the appetizer theme when doing progressive dinners with friends when you move from house to house for each course as dips are perfect for eating and drinking and socializing. Dips have always been a centerpiece and life of the party. There are so many different kinds that can be served with everything from crunchy chips, rustic breads, to a more healthier options like veggies and sliced fruits.
At the holiday season when I am hosting, or even bringing a dish somewhere, I lean on great dips very often.

Growing up, dips either meant onion or clam dip to me, made the old school way with a packet and some sour cream, and canned clams with the clam dip, and I still am a sucker for either of those, but if you are still stuck on those, get with the times boys and girls because the options are almost infinite. You can find everything from smoky to savory to salty to sweet to zesty and everything in between, so broaden your dip horizons. One of the best things about making scrumptious dips is in almost all cases, they go together in minimal time and usually with minimal ingredients, so as I love to stress when I share recipes, easy, combined with quick combined with delicious is a very beautiful thing.

This one is very addictive and the first time I had this was at a friend’s house during a Halloween party as by the time you have finished making it, it has an orange color to it. This was an adulting Halloween party as no kid in their right mind would eat this on Halloween with all that candy to chow down on, but the adulting crowd loves it. Every article I write seems to contain what I consider to be a love/hate item. You know, an item that not many people can take it or leave it. They generally love it or hate it with no middle ground. This curried peanut dip is a little more traditional I believe. This is straight up peanuts and if you are a fan of any type of satay dish, you obviously love peanuts. Like any satay sauce, this is spicy and sweet and so darn tasty. This is a warm dip and very smooth. Like with any satay dish, you can use this with pulled chicken, large shrimp, any veggies, chips, etc. This goes together in 20-30 minutes, but if preferred, you can make this as much as 2-3 days in advance and heat up over a low heat to bring back to life although this sauce is great hot or cold. This makes just shy of 4 cups, which depending on other apps involved, will easily feed 8 or so, and if you have any leftovers, it’s great for many dishes in the next day or 2.
6 tbsp unseasoned rice vinegar
½ cup jarred red curry paste
2 tbsp fish sauce
medium saucepan over medium heat. Add curry paste and cook, stirring frequently, until paste begins to stick to bottom of saucepan and is very fragrant, 2–3 minutes. Whisk in coconut milk and bring to a simmer. Continue to cook, whisking occasionally, until mixture turns darker in color and is slightly reduced, about 3 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat and whisk in peanut butter, vinegar, fish sauce, and honey. Season with salt as needed. Let cool to room temperature if preferred. Match up with your most favoriteBeforedippers.Itossa couple of dessert dips your way, here is my favorite dip of the day, at least a non-dessert dip. I personally have never met anyone ever who doesn’t like pizza, and I think the chances are good you can say the say the same thing. Now I offer a hot pizza dip including any and all of your favorite toppings. This is cheesy and creamy and is as close to the real thing when dipping in toasted French bread or something similar. Like most recipes, make this one your own and add the usual pizza toppings you would order on any pie. I NEVER make this for a few of us as this is for a crew/party and is one of my favorite recipes used for Super Bowl parties. This will make
1 cup creamy peanut butter
2 cans coconut milk, 14 ½ oz each

Lastlywinner.today, lets appease the chocolate/brownie lovers. I’m not a huge chocolate fan, although that puts me in the minority as the line I hear often is chocolate makes everything better. I always said it was bacon that did that, but no reason why both can’t be right. I usually use apple slices, pretzels, and even animal crackers for my dippers. The bigger bonus here is that this can be done in 10 minutes will feed 10 or so.
It’s time to bust out the sweets. The 1st of the 2 can be used as a fun appetizer, but I usually do this for a dessert as well. This one is not necessarily all about the dip as maybe it’s more about what’s being dipped. Grilled fruit is a big favorite of mine and no fruit more than grilled pineapple. Fresh pineapple spears get marinated for an hour and then grilled and then dipped into a delicious lime dip. Prep/marinating/ grill time will take 1 ½ hours and will feed up to 8.
1 package cream cheese, 8 oz, room temp¼cup butter, softened
10-12 people very happy, and truly can eat more like a meal than as an app so keep that in mind. This dip is such a hit with the kids and adults alike. “If” there are any leftovers, give it a zap in the microwave and bust out more bread. So Good. I always suggest buying 3-4 loaves of a great French bread or something similar. I know you gluten conscious friends won’t approve, but sure you can figure out something. This will take 40-45 minutes to prep and cook.

I have made both and they are both delicious. The thicker dip may require a few more minutes to cook. Spread the cheese mixture in the bottom of the pan first and then top with the pizza sauce. Sprinkle the rest of the mozzarella over the sauce. Once you have decided on your toppings, scatter those around the top of the cheese. Cook the dip for 35-40 minutes or until bubbly. If the cheese gets to a nice golden brown prior to it being cooked throughout, foil it for rest of the way. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes before dipping your bread into it, but once you do, you will fall in love with this ooey and gooey and stringy Italian dip.

Moultonborough Library New Literary Discussion Series: Family and Friends
Seventy-five years ago, U.S. leaders faced a series of difficult decisions about the nation’s role in the world. Fearing a rise in Soviet power and a decline in faith in democracy in Europe, men like Dean Acheson and George Marshall worried that the hard-won victory in World War II was about to be lost. In this illustrated lecture, Professor Kurk Dorsey of the UNH History Department will show how these leaders reshaped the definition of the U.S. national interest to create a new foreign policy that would dominate U.S. poli-
Friends of the Moultonborough Library have announced the next literary conversation will take place on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at 10:30. Dr. Suzanne Brown will lead a discussion of one of her favorite novels, Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson. Written in 1981, this is Robinson’s debut novel. Many critics say it is her best. The main character, Sylvie, an eccentric loner, is at this novel’s center. Uncharacteristically, this drifter commits to staying in one place to raise her orphaned nieces, Ruth and Lucille Stone.

However, the local community takes note of Sylvie’s horrible housekeeping and seeks to separate her from her nieces. Our scholar, Dr. Suzanne Brown has a deep appreciation for Robinson’s language, characterization and philosophical point of view. As a retired Dartmouth English Professor and experienced literature instructor for the New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine Humanities Councils, she always leaves us with a sense of being intellectually challenged.
Instructor Ann Xavier is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and has thirty years of experience teaching art. She was a juried member of the Boca Raton Museum of Art Art-

natural consequence of an educational community was to correct this by giving women the opportunity to learn together.Borrowing money to print brochures and enlisting the help of husband, friends and others, Christine scheduled workshops at UW-Treehaven Field Station for 100 women. More than 20 ‘classes’ were offered, covering a wide-variety of outdoor-themed activities. With no previous experience and no age or fitness levels requirements, women began learning fly fishing, archery, shooting, camping, nature photography, kayaking and cooking over an open fire. The program also fostered an appreciation of the diversity, beauty and importance of nature.

In thirty-eight states and six Canadian provinces, women are discovering the outdoors with a program called Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW). Since 1995, New Hampshire’s BOW Program has given women the opportunity to experience real outdoor adventure, learning new skills and appreciate nature in brand-new ways.

Following the chaotic first weekend of activities, Christine was tearful reading the reviews written by the women who attended and felt the experience had enriched their lives. The same scenario unfolded—no applicants until a news article resulted in the same enthusiastic response. yond their abilities. For those not com fortable with shooting, hunting or fish ing, there are classes on Geocaching, camping, journaling, and photography, opening up windows of experience that enriched their lives.
Reviews from participants include such comments as “you won’t feel in timidated,” “the most rewarding expe rience I have ever participated in,” and I can’t believe what this weekend did for my self-esteem.” Speaking from personal experience, I was fortunate to have participated in BOW twice and thoroughly agree. Be prepared to sign up early for programs, they are often sold out well in advance, but be per sistent in signing up, it is so worth while.
Instructors with years of experience share their knowledge at locations such as Geneva Point Center in Moulton boro, the Owl Brook Hunter Educa tion Center in Holderness, and Dorrs Pond in Manchester. Whether hiking the trails in search of signs of wildlife, learning how to safely handle firearms, cook over an open fire, or use maps and compasses, the classes are the stuff of tomboy dreams, but with the guidance of experienced teachers and mentors.
In New Hampshire, the non-profit or ganization is co-sponsored by the New Hampshire Wildlife Federation and New Hampshire Fish and Game De partment (NHFG) with assistance from Ducks Unlimited and many individual and business donors. The NHFG has a link to BOW on their website and sup port a scholarship to BOW, awarding six of them this year.
For those even more adventurous, consider looking beyond the borders of New Hampshire. A listing of the states offering BOW programs is avail able on the internet at the University of Wisconsin’s BOW website, or simply by searching for Becoming an Out doors Woman by your state of choice. Try dog mushing in Alaska, rappelling in Arizona, shuck and cook oysters in Delaware, learn to identify edible wild plants and wild mushrooms in Ken tucky, or check out the other 33 states or Canadian provinces. There is sure to be something exciting available. It’s even possible to venture further afield with BOW Destinations which of fers specialty trips in partnership with Green
Becoming comfortable with the out doors, learning about nature in all its diversity, developing the respect— even reverence—for our planet and all its flora and fauna are ways which are sure to benefit the goals of conserving and preserving the biosphere we call home. There are at least a dozen YouTube videos showing women at BOW activities and at nhbow.com, learn more about Becoming and Outdoors-Woman. son Boulder, I distinctly recall having thought, “Now, that is a big rock.” Simple, and to the point. Just the same as the Madison Boulder. It’s often talked about as being the biggest “Glacial Erratic” in North America, and there’s hardly anyone here who would deny that you are correct. That is a good feeling, no?
For anyone, no matter where they are from, who stands on any side of it, The Madison Boulder is one of the largest chunks of the solid Earth that they have
ever seen or will ever see. Measuring 87 by 37 by 23 feet, it is truly a Wonder of the Natural World. Figure 2 shows a party of approximately 47 visitors standing in front of the Boulder. Note that there is still room for more on the right side. Plus, The Madison Boulder is Famous, if only for its size. Being in front of it is, to a “rockhound,” or a geologist, is very much like meeting a Hollywood Movie Star - for free, and without a big crowd to get in the way of touching Fame.
rock from where they have been for hundreds of millions of years, in many cases (on ledges, cliffs, or smooth, flat pavement, for example). Other places in New England, especially Vermont, have fewer bouldery fields and forest than New Hampshire, or else possess different climates, which are either too mild or too cold, to result in favorable freezing of snowmelt after sunny days of melting. Frozen snow melt tends to refreeze at night in the Winter, which allows ice to incorporate rocks into itself, so the rocks can be transported by the
Erratic” is a boulder, which is, somewhat surprisingly, defined as being a rock larger than fistsize (a convenient estimate for a mapper in the field.) A rock of fist size, or larger, would be considered an “erratic” if it is located on top of a different “bedrock” - the solid rock basement in an area, (often called “ledge” by excavators and well drillers) than the the boulder, itself. A “glacial erratic” would necessarily be found where • Madison Boulder continued on page 21
How many Boulders (the city in Colorado, excepted) do you know of that have their own Wikipedia Page? There is at least one, and it is right here in New Hampshire, “only a stone’s throw” from NH Route 16. Widely regarded as one of the largest free-standing rocks in the World, it resides in its own State Park, just off NH Route 113, in the Town of Madison, New Hampshire (Figure 1.)
So, what is a Glacial Erratic, anyway? Does the Madison Boulder qualify as a Glacial Erratic? How have these out-of-place rocks influenced the science of Geology from its earliest days of trying to solve mysteries withoutNewwitnesses?Hampshire has the right stuff (Granites, Gneisses, Quartzites, and other massive, non-foliated crystalline bedrock) as the preferred precursor for making large boulders, which are the result of glacial ice action, and Winter freeze/Spring thaw cycles, both of which act to dislodge chunks of bed-

Upon my first viewing the Madi-
It takes a studied eye to see glacial striations. They can be as subtle as faint scratches, with very limited length and density of scratches. Or, they can appear as rather wide grooves, up to, or exceeding a few feet perpendicular to their long axis. These wide features are known as “flutes,” and can be very subtle and easily overlooked, especially when searching for striations. The line of the long axis is the direction that the ice was last flowing (earlier flow directions having usually, but not always, been wiped clean by later ice flow.) The width of the “fluting” depends on the dimensions of the boulder that was being dragged along against

other evidence of glaciation is apparent, thus making transport by ice much moreThelikelyMadison Boulder is within eyesight of it’s source, which is because of its enormous size. There just happens to be a contact located between the Whitton Ledge, a nearby prominent cliff in Albany, NH, where the rock type matches that of the Madison Boulder, and does not match the nearby ledge where the Boulder now lies (until the next glacier comes along.) This is not usually the case for erratic boulders, which become of interest for the information they yield about how a glacier was moving over many miles during the later stages of the glacier’s existence. The size of the Madison Boulder may have limited its run to only a few miles. The fact that the geological setting here is characterized by many closely spaced contacts, makes it likely that even a short ice-transported journey would result in a boulder to be
Occurrences of unusual boulders in Scotland gave rise to the idea, now abandoned, that they were evidence of the Flood of the Bible (of Noah’s Ark fame.) Closer examination, and evolving ideas about how extensive Continental Glaciers had been in the past, changed all that. Early geologists thought that the rocks drifted along on the flood waters. To this day, the term, “glacial drift” is still used for sediments of glacial origin. There was evidence of scratches (“striations”) in the bedrock pavement, which could only have been due to the boulders scraping over the rock surface. The discovery of

For non-erratic boulders, there is not-so-much interest for a geologist. However, in past times, settlers used boulders as a ready source of building material for foundations, buildings, steps, mill stones, and other uses of dimension stone. Look closely, and you might see boulders while on a hike, which have been chiseled and split by an earlier Human occupant of the land.
Because you can’t go wrong with a Free Admission to a World-Class Attraction, (second only to The Mount Washington Hotel on Route 302 in Bretton Woods, where the World’s Monetary System was devised in 1944) even the most jaded visitor will be thrilled to stand in front of such a Grand Natural Wonder as the 5,963 tons (12 million pounds) of The Madison Boulder. Please give it a visit. It will put a smile on your face.
