Old Stories, New Beginnings Article and photos By Joann Coskie At once old and new, 254 Main Street in Union is a marvelous center of community connections and a window into the lives and activities of New England’s early settlers. Currently, a sign out front identifies it as the Greater Wakefield Resource Center (GWRC).

While still evolving, the Center now provides lunch meals for the public 3 times a week, a function hall available to rent, a multipurpose room used by various groups, and a gathering place for socializing. The Gafney Library conducts tutoring and HiSET (high school equivalency testing) exams at GWRC. The rental offices are occupied by the Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance and Moose Mountain Regional Greenways (MMRG).

It was in 1998 when the town of Wakefield recognized the significance and potential in the building, motivating the Board of Selectmen to seek funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. They were successful in receiving a grant of $425,000 to acquire and renovate the building to convert into a community center. In addition to Wakefield purchasing the building, they were able to repair or replace siding and roofing, numerous windows, construct a kitchen, dining hall, office space, multi-purpose room, accessible entry and restrooms and install an el-

Center was established as a non-profit.

A four-year recurring agreement gives the town of Wakefield responsibility for the exterior of the building, with the GWRC Board of Directors managing the interior.

Built in 1855 by Robert Pike, it was first known as the Union House or Union Hotel, conveniently constructed next to the railway station. There were gracious hotel rooms for 20 guests, a splendid dining room and grandiose theater known as Pike’s Hall. The historic building report done by the architecture and planning firm, Misiaszek Turpin, describes it as a cross-gable building with three wings added to the rear, joined by hip roofs and an open covered passageway with a narrow courtyard in the center.

The Eastern Railroad had extended to Union in 1854. Reached by rail, Pike built a livery stable and provided transportation of people and goods to points beyond Union. The livery also serviced Carroll County stagecoach lines which all began in Union. Interestingly enough, that structure still exists, but has been dismantled and reconstructed as a private residence in North Wakefield.

Thus, it was that by stagecoach from Ossipee and by railway from Boston, MA, Portland, ME, and even New York City travelers came for the beauty and resources of the north country.

• New Beginnings continued from page 3 They came as vacationers, hunters, fishermen and loggers, salesmen and peddlers as well as those seeking to settle there. The community had lively commerce with a yarn factory, gristmill, sawmill, tannery, a general store and blacksmith shop. Eventually, the rail line extended further north, taking the bulk of commerce with it and causing a decline in Union’s prosperity. Changing hands several times, the Union Hotel became Farmers Tavern, then the Red Coach Inn. Perhaps as an effect of the war, the last visitors to the Union Hotel are believed to have been in 1939. In 1961 the hotel was lost to mortgage foreclosure. Also in 1961, the last passenger train passed through, no doubt carrying passengers nostalgic for days gone by.

For 5 years after the foreclosure the building remained empty until the VFW Burroughs Drew Post 7663 acquired it from Merchants Savings Bank in 1966. Some local residents remember fondly gathering at the VFW with friends and neighbors.

Residents who were children then still remember sitting in booths and eating french fries while their parents played bingo. By 1998, the size, scope and cost of upkeep and renovations motivated the VFW to sell the building to Wakefield, retaining the organization’s rights to use the facility. Sadly, due to declining membership the post closed and the remaining members joined Milton VFW Post 8993.

Hotel took an upturn when the cultural and historical value of the building was recognized in 1998 and the Lakes Region Planning Commission (LRPC) assisted in having the GWRC listed to the National Register of Historic Places. This was in keeping with the LRPC mission to aid and support communities in economic development, quality environments and cultural values.

Since then, the rehabilitation effort has been furthered by grants from the Northern Borders Regional Commission, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation and a matching grant from the New Hampshire Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP). The one requirement of the awards is adherence to standards set by the Secretary of the Interior. The largest of these grants was $245,000 from Northern Borders for the rehabilitation of the second and third floors. New modern wiring and plumbing as well as partitioning spaces to create office space is just some of the work in progress.

In 2016 Wakefield established the GWRC Capital Reserve Fund, adding to it in 2017 and in subsequent years.

The community assistance is a clear indication of the voters’ desire to provide Wakefield and the adjacent communities with a gathering space and supportive programs. This assistance and donations help with the ongoing work and meeting requirements for matching grant funds. Much more work is required, but the future and the poten-

Monday through Friday the center is open from 9 am to 1 pm for visitors and tours. Martha Borsh is usually there to welcome visitors and provide information. The function hall that is available to rent is also used for meals every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 12 o’clock. The Center asks for a donation of $4.00 per meal and prints the thrice-weekly menu a month in advance. Three paid workers are assisted by volunteers to prepare and serve the meals. On those days the parking lot is filled with cars as people gather for lunch. Even the covid pandemic didn’t stop diners from enjoying the repast, as takeout lunches were made available.

Patrons should call ahead to place their order to dine in or take out (603-4738324).

Diners range from the young to retirees, workers taking a lunch break, “snowbirds” and local residents. Some of the working crowd might include a group working on the historic factory building on nearby Chapel Street which once produced toys and furniture. Some guests may be coming from the nearby Heritage Park Railroad Museum, or as the name indicates, the Chapel on Chapel Street. These other locations have histories, stories and fu-

tures of their own to tell.

The impressive architecture, the sense of being surrounded by history, the feeling of stepping back in time make visiting the GWRC time well spent. Just to list a few features, the formerly gracious guest rooms which still have haunting traces of years gone by - - ancient radiators, fireplaces, vintage wallpaper, names and dates scrawled in pencil on the wall behind the stage, and a metal ring under a window that once served as anchor for a fire escape rope. Then there’s the once magnificent theater and stage on the 2nd floor, the wide boards mute evidence of the majestic trees once plentiful throughout the north country. An antique sweat box and a vintage Hallet, Davis & Co. of Boston piano, a company which in 1911 made a piano for Pope Pius X. Interesting too are the mysteries. Are the penciled signatures in Pike’s Hall really evidence that Benny Goodman performed here in 1923 and Frank Sinatra in 1934? And are the strange sounds and mysteriously moved objects really the work of Clara Perkins, the only person known to have died there? So, whether you have an interest in architecture, history, or a hearty lunch, the Union Hotel/Greater Wakefield Resource Center is the place to visit. Mount Washington Road Race Features Returning Champs

The 61st running of the Delta Dental Mount Washington Auto Road Race on June 18th is two short months away, and the returning champions, Kim Dobson and Joe Gray, are returning to defend their titles. Kim Dobson, 38 of Eagle, Colo., has won all six times she has entered and is the overwhelming favorite to take home a seventh title this year. Joe Gray, also 38 of Colorado Springs, Colo., has won the race the last five times he has run it and is looking for a sixth win this year. He has also won a couple of World Mountain Running Championships in the past six years as well. He was also named the Greatest of all Time (GOAT) of mountain running. All eyes will be on the champ as the field tries to take him down.

Gray will have a veritable laundry list of contenders this year. Starting with last year’s runner up, Eric Blake.

Blake, the ageless 43-year-old from West Hartford, Conn., has finished in the top three fourteen times and has won four times. We are eager to see if he can make it five this year. Lee Berube, 31 of Syracuse, NY, has finished third the last two years and keeps getting better. Also returning from last year is the fourth-place finisher, Samuel Fazioli, 30 of Derry, N.H. If Fazioli doesn’t win outright, he is the favorite to take home the Crossan Cup awarded to the top NH male and female runners.

In addition to the returning contenders, we have four elite runners making debuts at Mount Washington.

For whatever reason, maybe a lack of knowledge of what is in front of them, debut runners often have success. New to Mount Washington this year are 27-year-old Thomas Echelberger from Colchester, VT, Mason Coppi, 24 of Syracuse, N.Y., Everett Hackett, 32 of Hartford, Conn., and Adrian Macdonald, 33 of Fort Collins, Colo. Ech-

elberger is a member of the National Guard Elite Biathlon team. We have often seen Nordic skiing athletes do quite well at Mount Washington. Coppi was a four year All Southern Conference cross country runner and has speed.

Since college he has taken up trail racing and done well with first place finishes at the Swain Mountain Trail Race and the Black Diamond Express Trail Half Marathon in which he set a course record. Hackett is a two-time Olympic Marathon Trials qualifier, has a best time of 2:18:56, and just finished 50th overall at the 2022 Boston Marathon.

Macdonald has an impressive resume with two wins at the Mount Evans Ascent in Colorado, and he is also the reigning champion of the famous Leadville 100 trail race. All these guys can obviously run, but how does it translate to 7.6 miles of 12%-22% grade?

On the women’s side, Dobson has been so dominant over the past decade, it is hard to imagine her losing. With last year’s second, third, and fourth place finishers not returning, her chances are looking really good. However, the fifth-place finisher from 2021, Ashley Busa, 37 of Portsmouth, N.H., is back and looking to improve. Kim Nedeau, 42 of Leverett, Mass., is healthy. When healthy, Nedeau has always been in contention. She missed a win in 2019 by only thirty one seconds. Battling injury in 2021, Nedeau still took 6th place in a very strong field. During her injury recovery, she took up ElliptiGo training to maintain her endurance base. While she was at it she won the ElliptiGo World Championship in 2021 with the 3rd fastest time ever, a time seven minutes faster than Molly Seidel, the 2020 Olympic Marathon Bronze Medalist and winner of the

The NH Farm Museum tells the story of agriculture and rural life in New Hampshire over 300 years. We are located on two adjoining historic farmsteads on 50 acres on scenic Plummer’s Ridge in the town of Milton.

Here you can tour the historic Jones farmhouse, home of five generations of one farm family. Visitors will enjoy exploring the 104 foot long Great Barn that is filled with the most extensive collection of agricultural displays and artifacts in the state of New Hampshire. Another highlight of the barn is the carriage that was used in the Hollywood film, The Crucible. Take a moment to sit on the world’s longest sled and imagine guiding it down a hill safely as they did in the nearby town of Farmington, NH. Children of all ages can try their

hand with several versions of our Barn Scavenger Hunt. Try grinding the corn to feed our chickens. Follow the trail past the new gardens as you reach the Plummer Farm. On the way you can feed the cows, sheep, horse, pigs and goats. Keep going and take a walk through the woods, or even to our family cemetery. On special events, this discovery is made on a tractor pulled wagon.

Children will love doing old fashioned farm chores as their colonial counterparts once did, such as washing clothes, carrying water, and grinding corn. Wildflower Wander

”Ephemeral” means “lasting for a very short time,” and describes many of nature’s beauties: a sunset, a rainbow, a spring wildflower—things we see when we take the time to look for them.

On Saturday, May 28 from 9-11AM, come explore the trails of the Charlotte C. Browne Woods on Washington Hill Road in Chocorua with naturalist and Chocorua Lake Conservancy Stewardship Director Lynne Flaccus as we hunt for some of spring’s earliest wildflowers, the “ephemeral” treasures that sprout and flower early in the spring before leaves in the forest canopy block sunlight. These are the early bloomers that take advantage of abundant sunlight to set their blossoms in various shades of white, pink, yellow, and purple.

We’ll follow the trail along the edge of the wetland and back up through the uplands to see what may be just starting to bloom, or already in full display.
