Batter Up With the Muskrats

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Those who love baseball know how exciting a well-played game can be: The crack as the ball hits the bat, the crowd going wild, the competitive spirit, the smell of food from the concession stand, the warmth of the sun on a hot summer’s evening as you watch it all from your seat in the stands.

Thanks to the efforts of Noah Crane, baseball fans in the Lakes Region do not have to drive to Boston or Manchester to see a fast-paced, wellplayed game of baseball. Since 2009, the Laconia Muskrats baseball team has been bringing top-notch collegiate players to the Lakes Region.

This year, one player who is getting a lot of notice is Mariano Rivera Jr., the son of famed professional player Mariano Rivera. Admittedly the Iona College student will bring extra notice to the Muskrats, but Noah is determined that Rivera be treated as any other player on the team.

“We have had a good relationship with Iona College from day one. Rivera will be our seventh Iona player; the college always sends us great players.

They told us they weren’t comfortable sending Mariano anyplace else,” Noah said.

As with all Muskrats players, Mariano will be in Laconia this summer to gain valuable experience and to get a taste of what it would be like to play ball professionally. “We will treat him

like any other ball player. We want him to grow in the game but we aren’t here to exploit that he has a famous father,” Noah said.

The Muskrats got a call from Iona’s coach, mentioning they had a highprofile player and would Noah be interested? According to Noah, the Muskrats were aware of Mariano but had not requested him or any other player specifically.

Like all other Muskrats players, Mariano will be living with a local host family for the summer. It is a system that has worked out well for the team, placing the players in Lakes Region area homes where they become members of a family, much as an exchange student

“The team is made of up of 30 players who are 18- to 21-years-old. They are college freshman, sophomores, and juniors,” said Noah.

Because the southeastern United States has many fine baseball players and colleges (Due to its year-round warm temperatures, baseball is played all year long), most players on the Muskrats come from that portion of the country. (States include Arizona, Nebraska, Texas, Florida, and other Gulf Coast colleges/states.)

As of press time, the Muskrat players were arriving and the first practice was scheduled for June 3. Once the team is assembled, the players will get to know

one another and get a feel for the field and the Lakes Region.

Noah and his family are long-time baseball enthusiasts and Noah formerly played baseball for the University of Massachusetts as a pitcher. He also coached a collegiate league baseball team for a number of years and worked on the business side of running a baseball team as well. As manager of the Muskrats, Noah combines coaching and business skills.

The many loyal fans that attend Muskrats baseball games at the Robbie Mills Field on Eastman Road (off Parade Road) in Laconia are eager for the season to begin each spring. They know the collegiate players handpicked by Noah will bring many skills to the team, making for exciting games.

The Muskrats team started when Noah’s family purchased the Manchester (CT) Silkworms, a team that was a member of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Noah knew the team would need a New Hampshire home base and he felt that Laconia would be a good place for the team to offer a season of games each summer. (The Crane family knew the Lakes Region quite well and had vacationed on the lake in the past.)

Fun With Wings, Water, and Wheels

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper Do you like boats? Are cars your passion? How about airplanes? If all of this — and a lot more —appeals to you, head to the third annual Wings, Water, and Wheels Open House at Laconia Municipal Airport on Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“The event falls on Flag Day,” said Laconia Airport Authority Manager Diane Terrill. “We will be honoring Flag Day and the 70th anniversary of the Civil Air Patrol’s New Hampshire wing maneuvers. The Patrol came to Laconia in 1944 to do military maneuvers. It was a big event with a parade in Laconia when the Patrol came to town back then.”

The 10 a.m. opening ceremony will honor veterans as well as the Civil Air Patrol.

The event will offer a lot for everyone in the family, from a chance to talk with those who own vintage boats and cars and airplanes to about 20 artisans and craftsmen who will be displaying their creations for sale.

Each year, the event continues to grow and attract more people due to the unique displays and multi-faceted things to do. “This is our third year of Wings, Water, and Wheels,” said Diane. ‘We started the event as a way to market and promote the airport; it was the idea of the promotional committee of the Airport Authority to do outreach, increase visibility, and showcase artisans and local businesses.”

The first year had very rainy weather

but a good crowd nevertheless. The second year (last year) the sun shone and about 3,000 people attended, far exceeding expectations. “We didn’t expect such a great turnout!” Diane laughs.

This year’s event will be taking place at the beginning of Bike Week and Diane invites those with motorcycles to bring them down and show them off.

The title Wings, Water, and Wheels really says exactly what the event will be: airplanes and the Civil Air Patrol; boats that feature a blend of wings and water, such as seaplanes; and wheels, featuring many vintage cars.

“People love car shows and vintage boats,” said Diane, “and airplanes are unique and exciting. We will also have a lot of interactive activities for children.”

Diane’s goal is to allow the public to experience the general aviation airport and learn about its benefits to the community through educational and fun-oriented exhibits. Numerous static displays will fill the airport, including aircraft from Sky Bright Aviation and Emerson Aviation. Members of the NH Pilots Association and various pilots from throughout the state also will have their airplanes on display.

Aviation-related exhibits will include booths featuring the Civil Air Patrol, the Sea Plane Pilots Association, and the NH Aviation Museum. Visitors are invited to enter a drawing to win a free scenic flight from Sky Bright and Emerson Aviation.

Beyond aviation, there will be something for everyone, including Made in New Hampshire products, food and drink vendors, and displays and boats from the NH Boat Museum and NH Marine Patrol. Local car and motorcycle dealers and four-wheel enthusiasts will have their latest and most popular models on display, along with numerous antique vehicles.

Milo the Moose from the NH Motor Speedway will be on display, and the NH Fire Academy will give live demonstrations of its aircraft rescue and fire-fighting truck.

The Wright Museum of Wolfeboro will showcase numerous World War II vehicles from its extensive collection, taking spectators back to the late 1930s and early 1940s. Visitors also will be able ride on a Segway, courtesy of Gilford’s Gunstock Mountain Resort. Live demonstrations will include the award-winning Gilford Police Department K-9 unit and those presenting their radio-controlled hexacopters.

Molly King of WLNH will be broadcasting live from 10 a.m. to noon.

“Last year the reasonably priced helicopter rides were very popular,” Diane noted. “The helicopter rides will be offered again this year. A Robinson R-44 from C-R Helicopters of Nashua will be providing the rides.”

WinnAero (winnaero.org) and the Winnipesaukee Radio Controllers with a large selection of radio-controlled aircraft will enable visitors to try their hand at a virtual flight of a radiocontrolled airplane.

Sharkey’s will have a food truck with burgers, hot dogs, sausage, fried dough, French fries, and soft drinks for sale; while Sawyer’s Dairy Bar of Gilford will be selling homemade ice cream.

“We will have something for everyone, from children to adults. The event is really reflective of the fact that there is a lot to do in the area. I think of Wings, Water, and Wheels as a car show with a twist!” Diane said.

Lasagna Cook-Off Kicks Off Season at Moultonborough Historical Society The Moultonborough Historical Society will kick off its summer season on Saturday, June 14, with a Lasagna Cook-Off at the Moultonborough Lions Club. Visitors will be able to sample the entries while a panel of three judges will select the winners, with cash prizes awarded to amateur entries and recognition of professional chefs and restaurants chosen as winners.

The event benefits the Moultonborough Historical Society which has helped to preserve the town’s heritage and buildings for more than 50 years.

Tickets to the event will allow visitors

to sample the lasagna, side dishes, salad, bread, and homemade strawberry shortcake, along with coffee and tea.

The event will be BYOB and there will be music and door prizes, including four tickets to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Race/Camping World 301 at NH Motor Speedway in Loudon on July 13.

In addition, there will be a 50-50 raffle with a starting pot of $500, and a silent auction to make it a fun evening for the family.

An exhibition of new work by local artist Jennifer Van Cor will kick off the summer season at the Patricia Ladd Corega Gallery in Center Sandwich with an opening reception on Saturday, June 14, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Jennifer lives in Effingham and recently retired from teaching art.

A figurative landscape painter with an impressionistic touch, Jennifer describes how her painting complements her poetry-writing: “The landscape has always tantalized my senses. The smell and feel of wet grass, the sound of leaves in the wind, the shape of a shadow through a broken limb … and with it all the ever-changing color; a universe of color. Each stroke and dip of the brush pushes my senses onto the surface and

if I am listening closely and truly, the life of a landscape fills the painting. As my landscapes progress, they become more about the flow of energy, the experience of a lifetime of color, shape, and feeling. Poetry has been another way to touch the landscape. Words mix color and senses through imagery that is very much like painting. When the two are combined, I feel I have painted a poem.”

There will be an artist’s talk at 6 p.m. during the gallery opening on the 14th.

It gives them a chance to find out if they are good enough to play professional baseball. It is also a chance to improve their skills and stock as far as the NLB draft is concerned.”

Previous Muskrat players have been successful: 12 former Muskrats are playing professional baseball. Players have been picked by the Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, St. Louis Cardinals, and Tampa Bay Rays, to name but a few.

The ball field where the Muskrats play their home games is a gem, according to Noah. “The facility is outstanding.

It has great natural beauty and the City of Laconia takes great care of it. We have been very fortunate to have such a good, supportive relationship with the City of Laconia. They have been great to work with and they appreciate what we are doing.”

Noah envisioned the Muskrats playing at the Mills field since the beginning. “It is a beautiful location for a summertime baseball game. The field is incredible with a good playing surface. As anyone involved in baseball can tell you, a big expense is putting in good lighting for nighttime games. The Mills field had good lighting, which saved us a lot of time and expense. The field also had ample parking and the location, close to downtown Laconia, is excellent.”

Noah chose Laconia for the home games and headquarters of the Muskrats

because of the city’s demographics. “It has a good-sized local population and it has summer visitors, too. It is also far enough away from any professional baseball teams so that we get a good turnout at our games.”

In other words, bringing the Muskrats to Laconia offers a higher level of baseball to local residents, a bit like the area having its own Fisher Cats, the professional baseball team in Manchester.

As well as offering some exciting baseball games on the collegiate level, the Muskrats hold a summer baseball camp for children. Two sessions will take place this summer, run by the Muskrats’ coaching staff and coached

Step Back In Time at Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm

By Sarah Wright If you’ve ever wondered what life was like for a country doctor, back in the days when house calls were common, step back in time at the Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm in Tamworth. Still a working farm today, the property was in the Remick family for six generations. The last owner was Dr. Edwin Crafts Remick who grew up on the farm with his parents, Dr. Edwin Remick and Emily Crafts Remick.

When Dr. Edwin C. Remick married in 1929, the couple moved into a village house adjoining the family farm. They lived in a second-floor apartment while farmhands lived on the first and third levels. Dr. Edwin C. Remick practiced alongside his father in his childhood home, the Captain Enoch Remick House, from 1929 until his father’s death in 1935. The young Doctor Remick then continued the practice until his death in 1993. In his will, he left an endowment and set up a foundation to maintain the property as a museum.

Visitors to the Remick Museum can tour both homes: the Captain Enoch Remick house, built in 1808, and the farm house, exploring the office where both doctors saw patients, as well as the living quarters that Dr. Edwin C. shared with his wife, Marion Miles Remick. The furnishings are arranged as they would have been in the period, and medical tools are on display, along with other artifacts of farm life from the early 1900s.

Starting this month, visitors will be able view a new, more-detailed exhibit about the Remick family.

Other than touring the homes, guests can explore the farm and visit the cows, pigs, chickens, lambs, goats, and a mini-horse kept on the grounds.

The Remick Farm sells ground beef and pork, sausages, and eggs, or you can purchase herbs and vegetables grown in their extensive garden. To really enjoy that farm-raised goodness, visitors can attend a country dinner that takes place once a month, from May to early fall, with two available seatings.

(Hearthside dinners are available in the late fall and winter, where a small group of diners can help prepare the meal to see what cooking was like back in the 19th century.) The Brown Bag Lunches, on Wednesdays in July and August, are very popular, and guests are welcome to stay and picnic at the farm. After lunch, feel free to explore the scenic walking trails. If you want to try to replicate the amazing farm dishes at home, the chef’s recipes are no longer a secret. Just visit the gift shop for a copy of the farm’s cookbook.

There are other events and programs to take advantage of: Every Wednesday evening in June, an herbalist teaches classes about herbal medicines, and attendees can learn how to make their own salves and tinctures. Workshops are offered throughout the year.

Scheduled on Saturday, June 21, is “Barnyard Basics: Raising a Milk Cow”. The Historically Speaking talks start in July and will cover various topics. Every other Tuesday, at 10 a.m., the Remick Farm plays host to the Fiber Arts Group in the Hearth Room.

All abilities are welcome to come and share their talents, and it’s free to participate or just observe.

If you’d like your child to experience more about farming and learn what life was like for early settlers, there’s

a summer day camp for youths ages 5 - 12, separated into groups, for ages 5 6, 7 - 9, and 10 - 12. Register for a week of activities, which will include farm chores, crafts, and gardening. A family picnic takes place at the end of each camping week, with food prepared by the campers.

The Remick Country Doctor Museum and Farm, located at 58 Cleveland Hill Road in Tamworth, is open for self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday. Guided tours will begin on June 30 when the hours increase to 9 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday - Friday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. The guided tours include a visit to the Captain Enoch Remick house and farm, as well as a milking demonstration.

After Labor Day, the self-guided tours resume and the Captain Enoch Remick house, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will remain open for tours on Saturdays at 11 a.m. through Columbus Day. Moultonborough Residents Open Homes for 2014 Tour The 2014 Home Tour sponsored by the Friends of the Moultonborough Library will include a stroll through two spectacular gardens as well as a visit to a picturesque bed-and-breakfast lodging, and four lakefront homes in Moultonborough.

Each residence on the tour, which will take place on Thursday, June 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., has its own architectural style. One dwelling is an extensively renovated ranch-style home overlooking a cove with expansive oversized windows to maximize unparalleled views of Winnipesaukee. Many of the original custom features in the home have been personally designed by the owners. In addition to the specially designed furniture pieces which accent this home’s originality, the husband-andwife decorating and renovating team has devised unique ways to transform usable space and add architectural detail.

A second home on this year’s tour typifies the classic Arts and Craftsstyle architecture. It offers modern convenience, environmental friendliness, and open-concept living. The home, built

just five years ago, features geothermal heating and a unique central vacuum system. Beautiful oak floors framed either by pine paneling or plaster walls provides the framework for the lakeside property. While a beautiful fieldstone fireplace is the focal point for the Great Room, additional elements from the natural outdoors also play a key part in the kitchen’s unique design, helping to create a unique workspace. A special musical instrument collection also will be on display in the media room.

Proceeds from the event will help the library to acquire supplemental furnishings and equipment and provide funding for seasonal activities. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at two of the homes on the tour. To simplify the purchasing process, people are asked to bring address labels to attach to the raffle tickets. Thirty community merchants have provided prizes in the form of gift certificates.

New Education Director To Continue Expansion At Winnipesaukee Playhouse aWinnipesaukee Playhouse is continuing to build upon its summer camp program with the hiring Timothy L’Ecuyer as its new education director. Timothy has worked in a number of theatre companies around New Hampshire and in the Boston area, and he holds teaching credentials in English and Theater.

The summer camp program gives local youngsters an opportunity to explore the world of theatre by directing, writing, and acting in shows. Timothy will be offering his teaching and theatrical knowledge in the summer camp,

as well as working with a new Teen Apprentice Company. The programs will allow students to customize their learning experience this summer.

Holding bachelor’s degrees in both Theater and English from Keene State College, as well as a master’s degree in Theater Education from Emerson College, Timothy has directed and managed shows like “Pippin”, “The Rocky Horror Show”, and “Our Town” in both community and professional theatres. He also has taught at various New Hampshire high schools and theatres.

The other programs are Camp 1, for children ages 5-8, and Camp 2, geared towards those ages 9-11. The weeklong sessions will incorporate different tales and offer morning (9 to noon), afternoon 1 – 4), and full-day sessions, with the morning centered on the basics of theatre and the afternoon focused on music, dance, and art.

In addition to camps 1 and 2, there will be an Upper Camp offered for those ages 12-14, providing for a more in-depth experience, with two-week, full-day sessions. Native American History Talk in Ashland David Stewart-Smith will speak on the history of Native Americans in New Hampshire in the 18th and 19th centuries at the Ashland School Cafeteria on Thursday, June 12, at 7 p.m.

Stewart-Smith has studied the state’s Indian history for more than 30 years. His illustrated talk, “Native American History of New Hampshire: Beyond Boundaries, circa 1700 to 1850” — the third of a trilogy — will look at the period of the

expansion by European settlers from their seacoast beachhead to their occupation of the entire state, and the Native American response to that great change.
