Marvelous Meredith Fine Craft Gallery

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper When you grow up living with an artist, it gives you a unique outlook on life. That was definitely my experience. My mother loved to create things and just about any item — from pebbles gathered on a summer’s walk to colorful wool to make braided rugs —was fair game for her artistic endeavors.

It also meant I met a lot of artistic types that attended classes with my mother. One of my favorite teenage pastimes was socializing with New Hampshire craftspeople at the annual meeting of the League of NH Craftsmen in Concord. The talk at those meetings was of exhibiting and selling creations in League shops, commission rates, and other business. For me, the real fun was being around the wildly creative people who were daring enough to make a living selling their work.

Those artists influenced me a lot, although I didn’t know it way back then. To this day, a visit to a League shop is a must-do item on my list when visiting new towns. When at all possible, I love to shop and buy at NH League shops when I have to get a gift for a wedding or birthday.

On a recent July weekday, I was in Meredith to meet a friend for lunch. I was a bit early, so it seemed just the thing to visit the Meredith Fine Craft

Gallery, a League shop located at 279 Daniel Webster Highway.

The little shop is a charmer, located in a small, cottage-type building. The day I visited was a busy Wednesday in the height of summer so the business was bustling with shoppers. I marveled at the number of people who clearly love fine, hand-made items. A customer at the jewelry counter was chatting with a salesperson and trying on earrings and hand-made necklaces and others were delighting in pottery, prints, and much more.

Everywhere I turned in the shop, I was visually impacted by the creations of New Hampshire’s best craftspeople.

From pottery to stained glass to fine jewelry, prints, and oh so much more, the beauty of local hand-made items was everywhere.

I got the chance to chat with Nancy Rowley, the Meredith shop manager, who agreed a big attraction of the shop is that the items for sale are hand-made

by New Hampshire artisans. “We have the work of between 250 to 300 juried League members.”

She went on to say, “We have an excellent array of different media, from glass, hand and slab pottery, mixed metal, jewelry, fiber, wall art, and garden art, to name but just a few categories.”

I noticed the shop is very full

of product but does not appear overburdened with items. Nancy laughed and said, “We are able to sell the work of many artists because we display works by color. We create

Late summer and fall are busy wedding seasons in New Hampshire and the League has just the thing for those looking to give a memorable gift. “The individual items we sell in the shop are unique and that appeals to shoppers. If a bride is looking for a specific color or maybe a glaze on pottery that she loves, we can steer her in the right direction. Because we have a bridal registry, people can purchase something the bride and groom will cherish for years,” said Nancy.

What makes a gift from the League so special is that the item was handmade right here in New Hampshire.

“We find that customers like to buy local and they like to know the item is quality and hand-made,” Nancy mused. “The items for sale in the shop are not cookie-cutter gifts. They are meaningful and lasting.”

I have to admit, the thought of a hand-made work of art or craft appeals to me, too. Whether for a gift for a wedding or for myself, there is nothing like owning or giving something handmade.

Because my mother was a League member and sold her art through the League shops, I know what each artist

As well as the many wonderful items for sale in the shop, the Meredith League also offers classes which are open to the public. (When the shop was enlarged back in the early 1990s, it also provided for a classroom area in the upstairs level of the building.

With a large work table and a bright and cheery atmosphere, the intimate classroom is just right for workshops in all sorts of media.)

“We offer a lot of classes, such as basket-making, jewelry (we have a complete jewelry studio), and stained glass, among others,” Nancy explained.

In order to join and sell via the League, an artisan must go through a jury process. My mother was not admitted as a member on her first try, but the jury committee made suggestions on how she could improve her work in order to reapply. I watched as she re-crafted her work and eventually became a League member. Thus, I know that the artisans who sell through the Meredith (and other locations) shop are offering highquality, hand-made, original work.

Nancy says customers of all ages shop at the Meredith store. “We are now seeing younger people coming in and buying. They like the idea of buying hand-made items of quality and they are happy to support local artists.”

As well as purchasing items directly from the shop, Nancy adds that her staff is there to work with customers on special orders. For example, if a customer owns a cherished lamp,

Nancy and staff can suggest specific lampshades or perhaps work with one of the juried League shop artisans to create a custom lampshade or other item.

I was very impressed with that; where else can you get a custom-made, hand-crafted item of quality such as what is offered at the League?

On my way to meet my friend for lunch, I felt quite lucky to have arrived in Meredith early that particular day.

If I had not been early, I would never have met Nancy or had the time to browse through the Meredith Fine Craft Gallery.

I think my mother would be happy to know I am continuing to support an organization that enriched her life for many years and, in turn, enriched my life as well.

Conway Scenic Railroad’s 40th Birthday Celebration

By Sarah Wright Every year, visitors from all over come to Conway to celebrate the railroad’s birthday with half-price fares; but the 40th birthday, on Monday, Aug. 4, is going to be extra special.

With face-painting and balloons for the children, a live band, and lemonade and birthday cake for after the train ride, it’ll be a fun day for the whole family.

Guests can take a ride on the Valley Trains, vintage electric diesels dating back to the 1950s. The passenger cars are from the era of the ’20s and ’30s, and then there’s the First Class Pullman Parlor Observation Car from 1898.

There are two options: At 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., there is the Bartlett ride which Susan Logan, manager of Marketing and Events, calls the “over the river and through the woods” ride.

Travel through the beautiful New Hampshire woods for about an hour and 45 minutes and enjoy some mountain views. Or choose the Conway ride which leaves at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 and 4:30 p.m., running for 55 minutes. The Conway ride breaks out over the Saco and Swift rivers and travels through farmland with mountain views.

The site has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979 and has become a vital part of North Conway village. Twenty years ago, Dwight sold the railroad to its current owner and president, Russ Seybold, but Dwight still resides in the area.

The railroad has expanded substantially through the years. In the beginning, there were just over five miles of track and only coach seating was available. Conway Scenic Railroad currently operates two passenger trains over three routes and 35½ combined miles, and riders can now choose from coach, first class, or dining car seating.

LakeFest Expands To Include Arts, Music, and More LakeFest 2014: Raft-a-Palooza, in addition to attempting to capture the Guinness World Record for the largest free-floating raft of canoes and kayaks, will offer an expanded on-land festival at Endicott Rock Park in Weirs Beach on Sunday, Aug. 3, featuring the kidfriendly Watershed Warriors education circuit, nonprofit exhibitors, LakeFest patches for the first 100 youths who visit the NH LAKES booth after raft up, and live music.

Andy Opel, author of Winnipesaukeebased children’s books The Weirs and The Witches, will meet with readers, as will Ronald Guilmette, co-author of Islands of Winnipesaukee.

A new Arts Market will join the mix, curated by Granite State Arts Market; and the NH Boat Museum of Wolfeboro will be on-site with a display.

Attendees will have opportunities to purchase canoes and kayaks in

the vendor area where food vendors will include Traveling Texas Smoke Shop, Del’s Kitchen, and Dog Days of Summer Ice Cream.

Organizers have their main sights set on attracting more than 2,100 boats to beat the current Guinness World Record of 2,099 boats in a floating raft, set by Sutton’s Bay Floatilla in Michigan.

Artisans On The Green To Feature Works In Most Media The Aug. 7 Artisans on the Green art and crafts festival has scheduled more than 50 artisans from throughout New Hampshire, representing virtually every art medium. The Thursday event, which is free to the public with ample free parking and luncheon served from 11:30 a.m., is considered the largest art and crafts educational program in the Lakes Region.

“We expanded the area by almost 100 percent last year yet, by this June, our Artisans registration numbers had reached capacity,” said Peter Van Winkle, president of Sandwich Home Industries, the host organization. “This year, families will discover a fine arts village with four working studios attended by artisans and an art gallery and shop, as well as a full town green with over 25 mini-art and craft studios.”

Sandy Joncas, director of education, said, “Demonstrators and instructors in all art [media] are the theme for the festival and, this year, we welcome Lynn Haust from Holderness who will demonstrate the art of melting and fusing Italian glass into beads, then creating unique items perfect for gifts or collections.”

Sandy added, “Haust joins three

potters who will 6/23 instruct and demonstrate various techniques on clay potter’s wheels, as well as artisans showing lampshade construction, various painting [media], chair-caning, photography, wood, jewelry construction … the list gets longer each year.”

The event, which takes place on the Sandwich town green during Old Home Week, raises money for scholarships and provides a public education program. The Sandwich Woman’s Club provides a luncheon, which is the club’s major fundraiser for scholarships.

Artisans pay a fee to participate and commit to a program of instruction and demonstrations, rather than simply operating a sales format.

The Sandwich Children’s Center creates a hands-on program for younger children and Diane Johnson has a “felt and fur” presentation where children get to pet and hold rabbits and learn how6/30-8/24 they shed and where their fur ends up.

Cornerstone Invites Community To Recycle Electronics Cornerstone Christian Academy in Ossipee will offer recycling of

electronics, including computers, monitors, and Freon-filled units, on Saturday, Aug. 9, between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event will be paired with a mega-yard sale.

Headmaster Barbara Wilson said, “In early 2014, we started fundraising to improve heat retention through updated insulation in the attics. Now that we’re ready to do the job, we’re finding a lot of ‘stuff” we no longer need that needs to be removed. A certified re-recycler is going to be on site to take away our old computer monitors and TVs, tape decks, cables, air conditioners … basically, anything

that has a plug and is no bigger than a window air conditioner.

“Since the recycler will be on site anyway, we decided to offer the service to our community, too. People can drop off their items Aug. 9th between 9 and 1, and pay just a nominal fee for the service.”

Owners from the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad and the M/S Mount Washington cruise boat are embarking upon what many would call the ultimate tour of Lake Winnipesaukee with a Rail & Sail package. The new offering includes a two-hour train ride aboard the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, along with a 2.5-hour scenic cruise aboard the M/S Mount Washington.

Departing the Meredith Station at 10:30 a.m., the train ride aboard restored vintage coaches passes along the western shore of Lake Winnipesaukee through Weirs Beach and continues on to Lakeport. After a making a brief stop there, the train will reverse direction and travel back along the western shore of Paugus Bay to Weirs Beach, arriving at approximately 12 p.m.

Passengers enjoying the all-day Lake Winnipesaukee adventure will then depart the train at Weirs Beach and walk down the boarding ramp where they will be greeted by the M/S Mount Washington’s staff and prepare for a 12:30 p.m. departure. With a variety of ports of call, depending on which day of the week the adventure is, the M/S Mount Washington will travel to either

Diamond Island, Glendale, Wolfeboro, or West Alton and pass by Governors Island or Rattlesnake Island along the way, returning to Weirs Beach at approximately 3:15 p.m.

After returning to Weirs Beach, passengers will disembark the M/S Mount Washington and have an opportunity to enjoy the shops and attractions at Weirs Beach for about 40 minutes before boarding the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad at 4 p.m. for the 30-minute return trip to Meredith.

Stepping Back Into The Past At The Bristol Historical Society Museum

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper If you want to know where you’re going, now and then, you have to look backwards.

That seems like a rather philosophyheavy sentiment for a lighthearted day tripping adventure, but it isn’t really meant to be preachy. It is a simple fact that looking at the past can be fun now and then.

For me, looking back means spending time in my childhood hometown of

Bristol. In the summer, the town is bustling with shops and an occasional auction and a newly expanded library.

There are some great hiking spots, as well as beaches and restaurants.

On a sunny July Saturday, I decided to stop in Bristol on my way to another destination. I wanted to browse the Bristol Community Service’s expanded thrift shop in a new location in the downtown area (at 24 Pleasant Street, to be exact).

I’ve long been a fan of the thrift shop in Bristol, and while it was in a very tiny building in the past, the lack of space never stopped the staff from filling it to the brim with used items, from clothing to dishware and a lot more.

The new location has allowed for more items to be offered to the pubic. The large, spacious rooms are chock full of everything from linens to clothing, dishes, books … and of course, now and then, you just might find an antique among the offerings.

Because it was a Saturday morning, I thought I would also stop in at the Bristol Historical Society; I had read online (www.bristolhistoricalsociety. com) that the Society’s museum is open during the summer on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. I sensed that the museum housed some wonderful old items relating to the town’s history and I wanted to see for myself what might be in the collection.

It also was a chance to say hello to my cousin, Lucille Keegan, the historical society’s president. Lucille

welcomes those who drop in to see the exhibits and to chat with travelers who have come from near and far to drop off a donation to add to the museum’s collection or to perhaps gather information on someone or someplace from a visitor’s past. It might be to ask a question about the area or to look up something about a family member who once resided in Bristol.

It is not a prerequisite that the president of a historical society is a native of the town but there is no doubt that it helps. Lucille’s parents, Herbert and Marion Robie, operated a farm in Bristol for many years and everyone in the area knows the Robie family. Lucille’s deep roots to Bristol make a visit to the museum even better because she just might recall a tidbit of information about people and places from the past. If she can’t answer a question, she probably knows someone local who can help.

The Cajun sounds of Maine in Wolfeboro Saturday Night For the last two years, two very distinct regions of the country have collided at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand and, this year, JimmyJo and the Jumbol’Ayuhs will return as part of the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand Concert Series, bringing with them the music of Louisiana’s Cajun country with the accent of Downeast Maine.

Hailing from the “bayous” of coastal Maine, JimmyJo and the Jumbol’Ayuhs feature a unique blend of cultures.

Jim Joseph and Pam Weeks are the founding members of the band. Jim plays accordion, percussion, and fiddle and lends his vocals to the band. He also is a member of two other bands, Scrod Pudding and T-Acadie. A father of two, he spends his daytime hours toiling as a carpenter and teaching banjo and button accordion.

Pam is a solo Appalachian dulcimer player and singer, with several recordings, including music featured on historical documentaries on PBS. In her role with this band, Pam plays the fiddle and adds her vocals to the mix.

She performs with groups and in solo shows around the country and teaches all strings, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, and voice in her home and studios in Maine.

Bill Olson is the band’s guitar player and he lends his vocals to the band’s sound. He has been playing guitar for 45 years and upright bass for 19 years.

Bill comes from the traditional dance and contradance scene where he has

been dancing for 30 years and calling dances for 20 years. As a contradance choreographer, his compositions have been called all over the world.

Elna Joseph plays bass and adds vocals to the band’s mix. Her past includes dancing with the Appalachian clogging group the Buck and Wing Steppers which preformed at fairs and festivals around New England. While she is in the social work field during the day, she enjoys accompanying her husband, Jim, with JimmyJo and the Jumbol’Ayuhs and with Scrod Pudding.

Keith “Kit” Garavoy is the band’s drummer and also chips in with some vocals. A graduate of the Hart School of Music, he has taught percussion in Connecticut and Maine for many years. He plays a variety of percussion instruments in numerous Maine groups and has performed on several recordings, including Weeks’ CD. The free concert on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the bandstand in Cate Park will run from 7 to 9 p.m. While the shows are free, a pass-the-hat offering is taken at intermission to help support the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand’s mission to bring free concerts to the bandstand every summer.

If the forecast is for rain, the concerts are not held and a sign will be posted at the entrance to the park near the town docks, notifying the public of the cancellation.

Opening Reception for Wakefield-Brookfield Artists Garvin Gallery Five will hold a reception for artists in the WakefieldBrookfield Plein Air Group, the artists of the month for August, on Friday, Aug. 1, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The group, which includes artists from Wakefield, Brookfield, Wolfeboro, and Ossipee, will be exhibiting original artwork in various media, including oil, acrylic, and watercolor.

Air Group has been meeting weekly for nearly 12 years, painting outdoors during in the summer, traveling to locations in and around the state; and going inside to members’ homes during the winter. The group participates in art shows both locally and around the state.

Bluegrass Festival Offers Music and Instruction The 22st annual Pemi Valley Bluegrass Festival, scheduled July 31 – Aug. 3 at the Sugar Shack Campground in Thornton, will feature International Bluegrass Music Association awardwinning bands, including the Gibson Brothers, winners of 2013 Entertainers of the Year, Vocal Group, and Song of the Year, “They Called It Music”.

The Lonesome River Band, Balsam Range, and Flatt Lonesome will perform for the first time at Pemi, while fan favorites Nuthin’ Fancy, Jonathan Edwards, and Zink and Company will make return appearances.

There will be a variety of regional and local favorites, including New Hampshire’s own Crunchy Western Boys, Newfound Grass, Bob Amos and Catamount Crossing, the Seth Sawyer Band, Washington County Line, and the Lonely Heartstring Band.

This year’s festival again will feature a free Pemi Valley Kids Academy in which youths of all ages will have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument under the guidance of well-known fiddler Ellen Carlson and

a cadre of qualified instructors. The class will culminate in a main stage performance on Sunday morning.

Also returning this year is the Pemi Valley Bluegrass University which provides an opportunity to improve skills on instruments or voice with some of New England’s top musicians.

New Gallery Show Offers A Complex Ferber Scene

By Thomas P. Caldwell Artist Peter Ferber, known for his tranquil vacation scenes and images of boats — both on the water and docked — has undertaken a more complex effort for his upcoming gallery show at the Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro.

The Aug. 2 show will include for the first time a busy summer scene.

As he describes it, “though I always look to the same subjects for inspiration, it’s exciting to see the variety of images that end up coming together in a show. While I’m more often drawn to the tranquil character of the area, I finally took on a busy summer scene looking out over docks full of boats from Cate Park in Wolfeboro. It’s a favorite spot, but hard to pull together in one painting, with so much going on.”

Peter puts on semi-annual shows at the downtown gallery with new, original paintings for each one. Of all his commissioned and non-commissioned works, he said he derives the most excitement from preparing special collections for the gallery shows.

There will be an unveiling and artist’s reception at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, and the show will continue through Aug. 16, if the works have not sold out.

In describing the downtown summer scene that has become a centerpiece for the exhibit, Peter commented, “The afternoon light sparkling on the water and leaving a dappled pattern across the grass somehow served to unify [the activity] in my eye. By melding three slightly different perspectives, I

In between there’s The Mount [MS Mount Washington], the Millie B, cars with kayaks, dogs, ducks, and ice cream cones.”

He continued, “This new collection reaches beyond summer into the fall and winter seasons. Color schemes range from the vivid, crisp ones inspired by those ‘perfect New Hampshire days’ to the soft subtlety of a fog-shrouded morning, to warm earth tones that deviate from the literal and add richness to an otherwise ordinary view.”

He also noted, “For the first time since art class, I’ve done a still life with roses (while still managing to work in boats and a lake view). Continuing in the floral vein, another painting uses a hanging petunia as the context for a hummingbird I wanted to render. For the wooden boat enthusiast, there’s an ‘outtake’ image from my work on this year’s antique boat poster [for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show].

And golfers might recognize a spot on the Kingswood course.”

Peter continued, “Stretching boundaries (if an artist really has any), another image uses a bit of a time warp

in its message. Continuing two series I’ve been doing, there will be a painting from Ossipee Lake again; a wonderful evening beach scene showing Chocorua and Mount Washington. And there will be one more installment in my ‘white-on-white’ themed work.”

Peter went on to say, “I’m sure there will even be a surprise or two between now and the day the brushes get put down and the doors open. That’s the nature of the meandering path an artist is fortunate to take.”

Peter’s works depicting summer life in New Hampshire combine his background in creating commercial architectural renderings with his experiences on the lake dating from his youth when he spent his summers in Wolfeboro. The result is a body of works that take the viewer to a serene, dreamlike state of mind.

Peter said he cannot recall a time when he was not interested in painting, from grade school on. All through high school and college (he graduated from Principia College in St. Louis MO in 1976), he continued painting, although he began his career as a commercial illustrator.

He found his niche as an artist when, in 1994, he painted the official poster for the Antique and Classic Boat Society. “Boat posters were a way of finding an audience,” he found. “They [the posters] were unique, and brought new people into the gallery.”

• Ferber Continued from page 32 Barbara Gibbs, owner of the Art Place, commented, “In looking at some of the new pieces that Peter has painted for the Summer Gallery show, my immediate thought was, ‘Well, there is something for everyone.’ Then I thought about our area and the lakeside living that Wolfeboro, Alton Bay, Meredith, and surrounding towns provide, and that same thing can be said for our lovely Lakes Region as well: There is, indeed, something for everyone.

As shown in Peter’s watercolor painting, “Dockside Gathering”, people are shopping, eating ice cream, boating, picnicking at the park, walking the dog, or simply relaxing in a lawn chair.

“Then there are people who enjoy the simplicity and beauty of nature as seen in a watercolor painting that Peter did of a hummingbird at a feeder,” she continued. “The warmth of the day can be felt just by looking at this painting, and the detail of the hummingbird is again expertly painted by Peter’s trained hand.”

Barbara said, “Another ‘something for everyone’ moment occurred to me when I saw for the first time a painting showing a single wooden boat heading out on a foggy morning. I could almost hear the low rumble sound of the engine and almost feel the misty air as I viewed the boat gliding across the water. Also there is an oil that Peter painted that is both a still life and a lake scene in one. It is totally unique and is both formal and informal, delicate and massive, light and dark, colorful and

In her opinion, “the most interesting painting that Peter crafted for this show is a scene of a lady in a period bathing costume looking out to the water and seeing … well, you will just have to come take a look for yourself.”

“Shows are the most fun,” Peter says, “because I’m pursuing what I want to do.”

To create the paintings of summer life, Peter incorporates his memories of childhood into his depictions of cottages and lake scenery, capturing details that set the mood of a summer’s vacation.

In the mid-1990s, he began getting more requests for commissioned works, and his life as an “artist” was in full swing. By 1994, he was living in the Lakes Region full-time and, with-

in a year, he had phased out his commercial work so he could just work at painting.

He especially enjoys the “happy accidents” when he is experimenting with new techniques, or when he goes to an area to photograph one scene and turns a corner to discover an even more interesting scene.

In addition to his regular work, Peter does volunteer projects, directing a group of people to create a mural or doing a show to benefit nonprofit organizations. Among his fundraisers are auctions for Bald Peak and Castle in the Clouds.

Peter estimates that he has done more than 1,000 paintings during the last 30 years, creating about 40 works a year.

There are close to 100 reproductions of his original paintings out there and his illustrations have appeared in national

magazines, including Yankee, Antiques and Connoisseur, and a number of books, including a retrospective of the poetry and prose of Doris Peel, entitled Journey to a New Day, and a children’s book written by his wife, Jeannie Ferber, entitled The Tails of Quince and Flute in Semer Wood.

“Beyond the appeal of the scenes themselves, I hope that my work will stir an awareness of the value of preserving the character and history of this rich landscape we all enjoy,” Peter said.

• Day Tripping Continued from page 14 of the old fire station on the corner of Main and High streets in Bristol. The large room has allowed Lucille and volunteers to put together and display some wonderful exhibits on a variety of subjects pertaining to life in the area long ago.

When I walked into the building, I immediately spied a large, faded, red floor mat that said Grace Louise in large white lettering. I had to smile because it took me back to my past when my parents would mention various local restaurants, Grace Louise being among those mentioned.

“Where did you get that wonderful rug?” I had to ask. Lucille smiled and immediately led me to some old photographs of local restaurants, one of them showing two young women dressed in matching crisp waitress outfits standing in front of a charming little restaurant called Grace Louise.

“You might remember the old movie theater in Bristol,” Lucille added.

“Grace Louise was right beside the theater.”

Indeed, I recalled an old movie theater that was the victim of a collapsed roof due to heavy snow; I recall seeing the ruined building when I was a small child.

When asked how long the Bristol Historical Society has been around, Lucille explained that it started in 1965. She pointed to a large poster listing original members. Local family names were very familiar to me and I marveled at how many people were interested back then in starting an organization to collect and preserve the town’s history.

Lucille said that, back in those days, clubs were very popular. The town

had the historical society, an active woman’s club, a garden club, the Lions Club, and other groups that gave locals a chance to socialize and do good works for the public.

“The Bristol Historical Society originally met at the Bristol Community Center [now the Tapply-Thompson Community Center]. Eventually, the group got space for meetings and storage in the Old Town Hall but there wasn’t really a great deal of room to display items.”

About 10 years ago, the fire station space became available and the historical society members were thrilled to have room to create a museum/display area to highlight their many donated items.

“Feel free to browse around,” Lucille invited. Browsing was on my mind, but I hadn’t stepped two feet into the display area when I began sharing memories and peppering Lucille with questions. There was so much to see and read and marvel at, and it is a place to share with someone else.

I was charmed by the One Room School House display featuring old photos of various little schoolhouses.

It was surprising to see the large size of some of the schools, such as one at the Profile Falls area on the outskirts of Bristol. There must have been a sizeable population of children in this and other outlying areas for so many schoolhouses to exist.

Lucille said the old autograph books are favorites of hers, and she loves to look at the old signatures and comments. (In the distant past, the autograph books were small mementos of many who asked friends to sign the books much as teens do with yearbooks today.) The section on schools included old school athletic team photos, information on when the new high

school (now the middle school) was built, lesson booklets, and more.

I found one display in the museum very unusual and interesting. Few have probably heard of E. Maude Ferguson of Bristol. Information on Maude, along with a three-quarter-length photo of her standing by an ornate chair, tells us that she was active in both local civic duties and society. What makes Maude stand out from other ladies of her time period (early 1900s) was that she felt women could do more than run homes and raise children.

Indeed, Maude served as chair of the Legal Status of Women and was a president of the Bristol League of Women Voters. An old newspaper clipping tells that Maude “supported diligently the cause of women’s rights.”

What that might have meant in a small, conservative New England town such as Bristol at the beginning of the 20th century, one can only surmise. Women did not have the vote at that time and it was probably looked upon as a rather daring cause. Maude, it seems, was up to the task of speaking her mind and being in the spotlight.

She ran as a representative to the NH Legislature and was elected in 1926 and 1928. She must have been an active member because she was recognized by the Speaker of the House and placed on an important judiciary committee.

Maude went on to run for and win a place as New Hampshire’s first female member of the state Senate. An early photo of Maude shows her to be a very attractive woman, gazing into the distance with an inquisitive look and a half smile on her pretty face.

“I have to know more about her,” I told myself. It will be a good mystery to unravel and digging for old photos and information on interesting people like Maude makes the job of a freelance

writer quite fun.

Another Bristol woman, Fannie Caldwell (my mother), was a local artist and she had been an active member of the Bristol Historical Society. She died more than 10 years ago but now and then I come upon her paintings in local shops. It was a bit of a jolt from the past to see her distinctive cursive handwriting on various display labels.

At one time she must have helped catalogue donations, such as the white silk dress shoes that were once worn with a wedding gown.

And speaking of wedding gowns, Lucille carefully unpacked a long, white, heavy silk wedding gown donated by a local family. We marveled at the tiny size the bride must have been. In addition, a Victorian-era wedding gown with puffed sleeves and a large bow at the waist was also on display. Other clothing from the 1800s and early 1900s showed how people once dressed and the shorter stature and smaller size of many people years ago.

Other displays focused on trains, sports, tools, old signs, Newfound Lake, and much more. As I continued to browse, I was drawn to a rather primitive charcoal drawing hanging above a doorway. It depicted a roughlooking elderly man seated by a woodstove. The style was primitive and it was quite charming. I was amazed when Lucille told me, “Your mother did that drawing.”

It was unlike my mother’s typical, delicate style and the subject matter, a local elderly man who died some years ago, was also unusual. The drawing is a bit of a mystery to me; when did my mother do the sketch, and where?

A Concert In A Place With No Space Or Time The Flying Monkey Performance

Center will bring American music legend Leon Russell to Plymouth on Saturday, Aug. 2, with a performance at 7:30 p.m.

“Rock and Roll Renaissance Man” best describes the multi-faceted singersongwriter whose long and storied career includes collaborations with music icons spanning from Jerry Lee Lewis to Phil Spector to the Rolling Stones. There is a similar eclecticism and scope in his solo work which couched his gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel.

Somewhere between rock’n’roll stomp and lush lyricism, pianist Leon Russell found an unclaimed patch of musical landscape and he made it his own. He forged a unique style that blends rock, blues, pop, gospel, and country. Hits include “Tightrope”, “Me And Baby Jane”, “Roll Away The Stone”, “My Cricket”, “Magic Mirror”, and “A Song For You”.

An Oklahoma boy who emerged on the scene in the 1960s, he brought together style, technical ability, and a

prodigious song-writing talent.

Between his solo work, contributions to high-profile albums by other artists, and screen exposure in the “Bangladesh” and “Mad Dogs & Englishmen” documentaries, Russell became a veritable superstar in the seventies.

His most recent work was his bestselling collaboration with Elton John in 2010, “The Union”. A nomination and a featured performance on the Grammys followed that year.

Russell has won two Grammy awards and was inducted into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

Lucille would surely agree with that sentiment and, when I asked her what her favorite might be, out of the many, many fascinating exhibits in the collection, she didn’t hesitate when she pointed to a small, glass display case.

I gazed into the case that held a collection of 1800s tintype photos in gold frames. The photos were of Lucille’s distant male family members, some of whom died in the Civil War. They gazed out at me from over the many, many years since they lived and breathed, a silent reminder of the DOCK HARDWARE SPECIALISTS! enormity of war and all that small towns like Bristol sacrificed to the war effort.

Lucille told me the Bristol Historical Society museum is looking to bring awareness to the public about its collection. She encourages those with ties to Bristol or anyone who likes history to stop by. Membership in the

historical society is very affordable — just $10 a year — and the group works hard to bring history to life in the area.

The historical society is sponsoring a “Making It In Bristol” expo in downtown Bristol on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Businesses that make products, from artwork to manufacturing, services to farm produce, will be taking part, and Freudenberg-NOK will be offering plant tours.

I was glad I stopped by the museum to chat with my cousin and to check out the old items. From diner and restaurant signs and floor mats to old baseball uniforms to information on the first woman in New Hampshire to make it to the senate and more, the Bristol Historical Society museum indeed makes it a pleasure to look back at the past as we head into the future.

‘Toad of Toad Hall’ Hops Across Barnstormers Stage The Barnstormers stage will see A.A. Milne’s “Toad of Toad Hall”, his adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, on July 29 – Aug. 2.

In the play, by the time kind Rat, wise Badger, and shy Mole realize that even tough love has no effect on their naughty friend, Mr. Toad, it is already too late. The irrepressible Toad goes from calling a policeman “fat-face” to a 20-year prison sentence and, from there, to a daring escape and a ferocious battle with riffraff from the wrong side of the woods. After that, it’s tea and toast all around in the playful, imaginative tale of true friendship.

“A.A. Milne once again worked his magic in adapting Grahame’s wonderful story that appeals to both the young and old,” said Barnstormers Director Bob Shea.

“The fantastic characters, plot,

scenery, and music combine for a magical family night of live theater.”

The show will feature many Barnstormers veterans, including Robert Bates, Jean Mar Brown, Elaine Anderson, Andrew Codispoti, Anne Batchelder, Angela Smith, and several young actors from the Tamworth area.

A New Hampshire tradition since 1931, The Barnstormers produces eight plays in eight weeks. The 282seat theatre boasts air conditioning, a hearing assistance system, and handicapped accessibility.

Shows run Tuesday - Saturday evenings with a Saturday matinee.
