Glorious, Exciting Vintage Bikes Story by Barbara Neville Wilson Here’s my little secret: I binge watched Amazon Prime’s Harley & the Davidsons this past winter. I loved peering over the show’s stars’ - Walter, Arthur and Bill - shoulders while they figured out how to mount engines on factory bike frames. I freeze-framed schematics, trying to decipher how plans leapt from paper to machine. I held my breath on the racecourse when other riders just didn’t play fair. Yeah, the series does not appeal to everyone with its “this is history, let’s make it fun for today” way, but it piqued my interest. How can I learn more? Well, I live in the state with the second largest per capita ownership of motorcycles, and it’s also the state that’s home to the nation’s oldest motorcycle rally. Where better to learn more about vintage motorcycles than at Laconia Motorcycle Week®? First, I turn to the Laconia Motorcycle Week® Rally News. The official program of Bike Week, it lists all the events happening from June 9 to 18. There, on page 2, I learn that the first weekend at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway is devoted to vintage bikes and sidecar racing, in a series of events put on by the American Classic Racing Association. Wait a minute. “Vintage,” “classic?” Does that mean “antique,” too? Knowing insurance companies are notorious for being picky when defining terms, I go to an insurance company’s blog to find out the definitions of the three terms. And what do I learn? The difference is largely in the eye of the beholder. “Classic” motorcycles have a certain look to them. Their sleek design and modern-to-the-time technology take the eye immediately. Some people say a classic must be at least 25 years of age, yet there are plenty of designs that are considered “instant classics” the minute they roll off the assembly line. As for “vintage” and “antique,” the American Historic Racing Motorcycle Association (AHRMA) divides “vintage” motorcycles into two categories for racing: pre-1975 for motocross, and after 1975 for road racing. “Antique” motorcycles

Classic Race Bikes courtesy of NHMS must be 35 years or older, according to the AHRMA, but motor vehicle registration rules differ from state to state. Some bikes can be registered as antiques when they are just 20 years old. Overall, it seems the three terms are used almost interchangeably. Thus, whether you own a classic, a vintage or antique motorcycle—or you simply enjoy gawking—the Laconia Bike Week has plenty of opportunities for you in its 93rd year. Starting Friday, June 9, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) in Loudon is the place to be. Actually, the Loudon Speedway has been the place to be for vintage motorcycling since its early days. Way back in 1981, the old Bryar Motorsports Park, forerunner to NHMS, was the site of the July 4 Belknap Cup Summer Vintage Festival. A celebration of classic motos and autos, it quickly became a fixture on the summer circuit, and when Bryar was sold in 1990, the new owners contracted the United States Classic Race Association (USCRA) to run it, and by 1992, it had become so successful, it was the centerpiece of a full season of racing. This year, the fun starts Friday, June 9 at NHMS in Loudon with the opening of the USCRA Vintage Race School. There, adult, licensed motorcycle riders bring their bikes and are taught “basic racing philosophy, technique, terminology as well as proper safety and race procedures,” in the evening, and

the following morning, participants get out on the track with instructors to put lessons into action. “This initial track time is critical for helping new racers get their bearing in a race setting, and provides them the opportunity to develop a feel of the course and the experience of riding on a track at speed, with other racers,” says the USCRA. Afterwards, instructors review and evaluate students’ performance before a “Rookie Race.” Safe and successful completion of the race is mandatory to receive a USCRA license required to participate in any USCRA road races. Can’t make it to class Friday night? It’s offered Saturday evening, too.

While students who have completed the course and get their license are cleared to participate in any USCRA races run over the weekend or throughout the summer, discretion is strongly encouraged. Vintage machines may not be as fast as the newest innovators, but there is plenty of speed and skill necessary to compete safely. Classic bike forums and social media are full of safety reminders and requests to help injured motorcyclists. Once credentialed, students are cleared to participate in USCRA races run over the weekend or throughout the summer. This year’s FIM North American Vintage Road Race Championships, where 1980 Laconia Classic winner and AMA Formula One Grand Champion Rich Schlachter will be Grand Marshal, runs Saturday and Sunday, June 10 and 11. Not limited to the expected speed events, the program also features sidecar races. “Sidecar races?” The phrase immediately brings a smirk to my face as I remember mid-century cartoons where grandma sits sedately in a sidecar, is disconnected from the bike by some freak occurrence, has a wild ride, then is returned to her original place to return safely home. “How sweet,” I think. Hardly! “Sidecar outfits,” I learn online from bmwmotorcycletech, “do NOT handle •Vintage Bikes Continued on page 4

Did you take note? While motorcycle racers ride their bikes, racers with sidecars drive their rigs. And driving a sidecar involves a whole different perspective on physics, as well as strength. There are points where both driver and passenger are balancing the bike using weight, weight placement and sheer strength, according to what I read. Reading isn’t enough, though; I need to get to NHMS to see these racers in action. I’m learning, too, that vintage motorcyclists belie the gruff, biker stereotype. Another race is titled “The Big Fish Little Pond 3-ish Hour Endurance Race” Starting at 2 pm on Saturday, the race is described by one fan in the Concord Patch as “not only a great way to get track time, but the fun of scrambling to get the bike in, fuel it up, change riders and get back on the track in the shortest time possible is something you have to

vintage bikes, talk antique bikes, and learn about classics throughout the first weekend at NHMS. Outside the Speedway gates, Makris Lobster and Steak House is hosting an Antique Bike Rally on Sunday, with special guests Houly from Grateful Sleds, David Gamlin of

Wayback Wheels and John Reardon of JR’s Cycles. Tuesday, June 13 sees a Vintage Bike Show sponsored by Haymond Law Firm at the Broken Spoke Saloon in Laconia/Weirs Beach, and antique Indians, Harleys and go-karts are pitted on the Wall of Death at the Wild Wheels Thrill Arena from Thursday to Sunday, June 15-18 at NHMS from 10 am to 5 pm. And if that’s not enough vintage for you, the ASCRA hosts a series of New Hampshire events throughout the summer at Canaan Speedway and Loudon, culminating in the Granite State Championships at NHMS in September. The new North East Motor Sports Museum in Loudon promises a nice exhibit of vintage motorcycles, and is open to Rally ticket holders and museum members only June 10 to 18 from 10 am to 4 pm. Its official opening is slated for later this summer. Harley & The Davidsons may have started me on this path. Now I’m hanging on for the ride. World War II-Era Display of Motorcycles The Wright Museum of WWII in Wolfeboro will display three WWIIera Harley-Davidson motorcycles in its Military Gallery during Laconia Motorcycle Week®, June 10-18. The Harley-Davidsons are Motorcycle U, Motorcycle UA, and Motorcycle WLA. Harley-Davidson manufactured the Motorcycle U for the U.S. Navy Shore Patrol from 1943 to 1948. The Motorcycle U to be displayed was restored to the way it would have looked during World War II, where it was probably used to patrol the grounds of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The Motorcycle UA, which was produced in 1940, is actually a Motorcycle U. The “A” indicated it was manufactured for the U.S. Army. The Motorcycle WLA was a workhorse. The U.S. shipped large quantities of these motorcycles to their allies as part of the Lend-Lease

Program. The largest quantity – over 30,000 – went to the Soviet Union. The U.S. Army used WLAs for police and escort work, courier duties, and some scouting. Harley-Davidson stopped manufacturing the WLAs after World War II, but resumed production from 1949 to 1952, during the Korean War. The WLA to be on display dates to 1940. The three motorcycles will share the Gallery with six other WWII vehicles from the Museum’s permanent collection. The Museum is a not-for-profit educational institution that focuses on the American home front as well as on the war front during World War II. The museum is located at 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH, on Route 28. For more information, contact the museum at 603-569-1212, or go to the museum’s website at www.WrightMuseum.org.

Celebrating 65 Seasons at NH Music Festival The New Hampshire Music Festival celebrates their 65th season this summer with free outdoor special events, an expanded orchestra, a new concert series in Wolfeboro, a new series of ArtsWalks as part of the Music in the Mountains series, the 4th annual Make Music Plymouth, international soloists, and the return of music director Paul Polivnick. This summer’s popular orchestral events continue in the Hanaway Theatre at the Silver Center for the Arts in Plymouth on Thursday evenings, offering a range of orchestral emotions beginning with the opening night on July 6 at 7:30 pm featuring the Festival’s concertmaster and international soloist Yulia Milshtein performing the Bruch Violin Concerto paired with Beethoven’s epic Symphony No. 5. The season finale features renowned 26-year-old pianist Steven Lin performing the Prokofiev Piano Concerto and the orchestra on Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances. In between these two masterwork concerts, the Festival presents a series of diverse concerts including Mozart and Mahler featuring a concert version of Mozart’s short opera The Impresario which pits two competing sopranos against each other, and Copland in Mexico, a multimedia exploration of Copland’s time in Mexico and featuring a full showing of the film Redes accompanied by live orchestra. This performance is funded in part

The NH Music Festival will continue its popular Music in the Mountains series this summer. (Photo courtesy NH Music Festival) by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This year the Festival will also present its 4th annual Composer Portrait concert welcoming to New Hampshire composer Huang Ruo, who has been lauded by the New Yorker magazine as “one of the world’s leading young composers.” A variety of Ruo’s music will be performed, including his piece Leaving Sao, where Ruo will be featured as a vocalist in traditional Chinese folk style. This concert will conclude with Haydn’s powerful Lord Nelson Mass performed by the Festival’s Symphonic Chorus, conducted by Dr. Dan Perkins and featuring four Plymouth State University alumni who have continued their professional careers in opera and voice performance returning to the region as soloists for this great work.

Visit the Castle and you’ll see... A millionaire’s state-of-the-art dream house from 1914; Panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee; Cascading waterfalls along a scenic brook.

Alongside the orchestral series, the New Hampshire Music Festival continues the long-standing chamber music series on Tuesday evenings in the Smith Recital Hall at the Silver Center for the Arts in Plymouth. This acoustical gem of a venue showcases the Festival musicians in an intimate setting performing Mozart piano sonatas to large-scale compositions by contemporary composers. The full programming schedule for this series is personally curated by the musicians of the Festival and will be updated online as information becomes available. These concerts have been known to sell out the last several years so purchasing tickets early is recommended. To celebrate Season 65, the New Hampshire Music Festival is expanding their orchestral offerings to a new region of the state by bringing performances to Wolfeboro. On the opening and closing weekends of the New Hampshire Music Festival, the entire orchestra will present repeat performances of their Plymouth concerts at the Kingswood Regional Performing Arts Center in Wolfeboro. Other weeks during the summer will showcase chamber music on Saturday evenings

With generous support from the Lincoln Financial Foundation and with new support from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, the New Hampshire Music Festival will continue the third annual Music in the Mountains series presenting free informal concerts on lakesides and mountaintops. This year the series evolves to include a new set of events called ArtsWalks. On Friday mornings in select communities, musicians will be performing along nature trails partnered with local artists who will be creating new work. At the head of these trails, local conservation organizations will be present to provide guided walks describing their efforts to promote and improve the ecology of their specific region. Details about ArtsWalk events will be available on the Festival’s website – www.nhmf.org - along with other Music in the Mountains series concerts that will be taking place across the state, including a chamber concert at St. Gauden’s National Historic Site, a free series of concerts at the Taylor Community in Laconia, the fourth annual Make Music Plymouth with a free family concert on July 22 and the second annual New England Choral Institute. Annual Meredith Sculpture Walk Installation Begins The Greater Meredith Program (GMP) sponsored 4th Annual Meredith Sculpture Walk’s, all-volunteer installation crew will be seen through mid-July placing works of art in Meredith’s lakeside parks, along Main Street, and at Mill Falls Marketplace. The Meredith Sculpture Walk, a successful ongoing GMP initiative, is a year-round, outdoor-juried exhibit that fosters awareness and enjoyment of public art in Meredith, drawing residents and visitors to explore the Walk and the town. Thirty-three sculptures from northeast artists will include 11 returning and 22 new works of art. Returning works include “Très Bien,” a majestic horse in Hesky Park created from driftwood by Vermont artist Rita Dee (RitaDee. net) and the bronze “Master Yoga” by artist Josie Dellenbaugh, which will be relocated to Main Street. New works installed to date include

“Très Bien,” horse created from driftwood by Vermont artist Rita Dee. “Harbor Seal” by the late Beverly B. Seamans (beverlybseamans. com) of Marblehead, Massachusetts.

Previously, her popular “Wendy,” also a bronze statue, was located near Innisfree Bookshop for the maximum

two-year term. Also new this year and found in the Courtyard on Main Street pocket park, is a forged steel wall sculpture “A Midwinter’s Picnic Under the Oaks” by Meredith artist, Steven Hayden (haydenarts.com). During this transition time, the self guided Walking Map featuring the new exhibit is available at greatermeredithprogram.com and a printed brochure is available in kiosks found at the entrance to Hesky and Scenic Park, the Courtyard on Main Street, in front of the Post Office and outside Oglethorpe’s in the Mill Falls Marketplace, as well as at Town Hall, the Meredith Library and various businesses along the walk. The Greater Meredith Program (GMP) is a nonprofit community development organization seeking to enhance economic vitality, historical and cultural heritage, and town-wide beautification.

There will be Steampunk art, antique bicycling, steam exhibits, including a demonstration by steam artist Todd Cahill and his Steamachine Sculptures. The Cog is featuring a special ride to the moon on the “Steampunk Express”, engine number 9. Call 603-278-5404

to book train tickets for the 3:30 pm steam ride. Admission to the event is free. Nicknamed for its pepper-sauce bottle shape, the Peppersass cog engine was invented by Sylvester Marsh. In 1857, after becoming lost near the summit of Mount Washington during a climb, Marsh knew that there had to be a better way for people to reach the highest mountain peak in the northeast and immediately began developing a plan to build the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway.

A conventional train could never get up Mount Washington; it would take a special type of railway to carry passengers up the mountain. In 1861, Marsh was granted a patent for a steam locomotive using a cogwheel to grip a center notched rail. On July 3, 1869, Old Peppersass became the first cog-driven train to climb 6,288-ft. Mount Washington. The Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain climbing cog railway, provides a sense of adventure and history as it makes the spectacular climb up a three-mile-long trestle to the 6,288-ft. summit of Mount Washington — the tallest mountain in the northeast. No matter the weather — sun, rain or snow — this once-ina-lifetime experience is available May through November. Passengers may choose to ride The Cog in a historic coach powered by a vintage coal-fired steam locomotive or the more modern and eco-friendly biodiesel engines. The Cog is located six miles from Route 302 on Base Station Rd. Marshfield Station, NH, and is just three hours from Boston. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended and available online at thecog.com or by phone at 603-2785404. For more information, visit thecog.com.

Off the Beaten Path Adventures By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper A few years ago, I decided I just had to share some of my favorite (by those visiting for Laconia’s Motorcycle Week) day trips. “How about the Tilton Arch, the Madison Boulder and Sculptured Rocks?” I asked myself as I tried to recount all the strange and fun day trip rides I have taken. I’m not a motorcyclist, but I wanted to write about places that those in the area for Bike Week (as I call it,) could visit via motorcycle. The story was popular and we (The Laker) even got a few complimentary letters with the request for more weird or little known places to visit. This challenge was right up my alley, because nothing makes my pulse quicken like a dirt road with no signage, a distant pond that I’m not sure how to reach, a ghost town or historical area that holds mystery or a good legendary tale. So this year, as I prepared for Motorcycle Week in the Lakes Region, I sat down to think about some places our motorcycling readers might enjoy visiting. “Hmmm…how about Potter Place, the village where NH’s black magician lived in the 1800s? And what about a little ride up to see the exhibit at Castle in the Clouds that epitomizes the natural beauty of NH?” I asked myself. As it does sometimes in the spring in NH, it had been raining and chilly for days, but on this weekend, the sun finally came out and a warmth replaced the cold. The sky was filled with puffy

gray and white clouds scudding across the blue that seemed to meet the green mountain horizon. “Perfect weather for an off-thebeaten-path trek!” I told myself as I headed out the door. I stopped first for a hearty breakfast at Water Street Café near Fair Street in Laconia. It was busy, as was to be expected on a Sunday morning, but I was soon seated and enjoying a stack of cranberry pancakes (with real NH maple syrup of course!) and hot coffee. Back on the road, I continued past the Tanger Outlet at 120 Laconia Road, in Tilton. Along with many great shops, this is also the place where the Laconia Art Association has a spacious gallery. I recently visited (and wrote about) the gallery and its many wonderful works by Lakes Region artists. While it was not on my day trip agenda, if you are a motorcyclist who wouldn’t mind bringing home a painting, photo or print of the scenic Lakes Region, I strongly urge you to stop in the gallery, which is open Thursday through Sunday; call 603-998-0029 or visit www.lraanh.org. While this story also is not about the Tilton Arch and the many wonderful old statues places around the town by wealthy Charles Tilton many years ago, I urge you to ask anyone in the town how to get to the Arch. You can see it from certain locations in town and up close, it’s quite a mammoth structure. There is parking by the Arch and it is free to visit. It’s a fabulous place for a photo, so bring your cell phone or camera! To reach Potter Place/Andover,

Exterior of the former general store, now part of the Andover Historical Society. travel through Franklin and take a left onto Rt. 3A towards Bristol. A few miles after your left turn, you will see a left turn/sign for Rt. 4/Andover. This route will take you – leisurely – along the shores of Webster Lake.

June 5, 2017 • Day Tripping Continued from page 14 the body of water. It isn’t particularly huge, like Winnipesaukee, but I love Webster Lake. It is quieter, pretty and you don’t see a lot of boat traffic and congestion like busier places. You’d be correct if you guessed that the lake is named after an area native of note: Daniel Webster who grew up not far away. The pace of travel and life is slower here and you will see some pretty fields and farms; pay attention because the road twisting and winding and the speed limit is enforced. Andover is a tiny town with many old buildings. You won’t find many stores in the village area, but it is definitely a serene place. After traveling this road, you will soon come to a fork in the road. If you head left, you will go to Boscawen/Concord; right takes you to Potter Place, not many miles down Rt. 4. When I visited, the day seemed to have slid away and it was mid afternoon on a Saturday when I saw the sign for Potter Place (which is technically a sort of hamlet of Andover). I hadn’t called ahead and I was right in assuming the railroad station, general store and the property where 1800s AfricanAmerican magician Richard Potter and his wife, Sally, are buried would be closed for the day. The Andover Historical Society is in charge of the railroad station, the train car, old-time general store/post office museum and the events that take place on the property each summer. I shrugged, not really disappointed that

the place was closed. For me, you don’t need to see each and every display to get a feeling for a place. I parked in the lot beside the rust red train station and decided to take a few cell phone photos of the general store. As I stood beside my car, the lonely stillness and oldfashioned feeling of the hamlet washed over me. I could imagine a storekeeper standing in the display window of the general store, watching for his next customer. A lady – maybe Sally Potter – would approach, her long skirt trailing in the dust kicked up from the wagons that rattled by. In the distance, a whistle would cut through the forest, signaling the soon-to-arrive train. But it was silence that filled the air on this day and the spicy scent of lilacs flowering on either side of the marble slab stone stairs of old J.C. Emons Store and Post Office. I gazed through the window and saw a Historical Society display and poster advertising an exhibit of train prints in the train station this summer. I had visited Potter Place last summer and was aware the Society had created a nice garden at the site of Richard Potter’s former home (now a cellar hole). Richard and Sally are buried in a modest little cemetery in this area and I stopped by to say a silent hello to this man who had talent and courage to travel the country, entertaining folks in town halls, saloons and other places when slavery would have made travel quite perilous in some places. A car slowed and stopped and a friendly woman asked if she could help or answer questions. I was lucky to chat with one of the Historical

Society members who had stopped by the general store to retriever some paperwork. She invited me into the store where I got to see the many displays and step back into what the world would have been like when the store was the hub of the community. The railroad ran all the time, and made the hamlet very busy. It would have seen passengers from many far away places pass through, and maybe some took the train to try to catch a glimpse of Richard Potter, the magician who was so unlike most people in this part of the world in the 1800s. I saw a display of old-time hats and a sign telling of a millinery shop that once thrived in the town. It seems the female proprietor had a workshop over a store in town and spent the long, cold winters taking orders and creating fashionable hats. When spring arrived, the local ladies were atwitter and eager to see the new hats that would set the fashion pace for the summer! The shop had an old-time pot bellied wood stove, with chairs placed around a checkerboard on a wooden barrel, just like we would imagine. Shelves were lined with old-time cans and merchandise; at one time this store was definitely the place to be! You could get your mail here, too, at the post office, which took up part of the first floor store space. Of note, a great Old Time Fair takes place each summer. This fair is always the first Sunday in August, and this year the date is August 6. Organized by the Society, the fair is held on the Society’s grounds in Potter Place. This is a town-wide “Old Home Day” event,

with activities and fun for all ages. Included are a country auction, an extensive flea market, a craft market, a farmers market, railroad handcar rides, children’s games, antique vehicle exhibits, musical entertainment, and much more. If you want to really experience what life was like in a New England town over 100 years ago, put a visit to Potter Place on your agenda. (When I mentioned to the lady from the Historical Society that I was writing a story about where motorcyclists could visit during Bike Week, she smiled and said everyone is most welcome.) The Society’s museum buildings are open to visitors during the summer on weekends from Memorial Day to Columbus Day. Hours are Saturdays from 10 am to 3 pm and Sundays from 1 to 3 pm. Memberships and contributions are gratefully accepted. The Andover Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. For further information, please contact the Andover Historical Society at PO Box 167, Andover NH 03216 or Pres@ AndoverHistory.org. The website has many photos and information; visit www.andoverhistory.org. It is admittedly a long ride from Potter Place/Andover to Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro, but day tripping is really all about driving around, discovering unusual places… and sometimes, getting a bit lost! It took me over an hour to retrace my route, and this time I decided to go through Danbury/Rt. 4, not far from • Day Tripping Continued on page 24

Pitman’s Freight Room in downtown Laconia is kicking off the summer comedy season in fine fashion with a double headliner event on Friday, June 9 with the summer start time of 9 pm. The show stars Steve Bjork, a Boston headliner who has been seen on Comedy Central, and works nationwide, including Las Vegas and Atlantic City, along with Ryan Gartley (Las Vegas, Comedy Central). Pitman’s is a “bring your own food and drinks venue” and tickets are available by calling 603-527-0043 or 603-494-3334, or tickets may be purchased at the door the night of the show. For additional information on this show check Pitman’s website at www.pitmansfreightroom.com or for comedy information email msmith789@comcast.net. Pitman’s owner, Dick Mitchell, said starting the summer shows (June, July, and August) at 9 pm allows people to take full advantage of the better weather while still being able to make the shows. “Our first year we kept the time at 8 pm and people were asking us for a later start,” said Mitchell. “We try to accommodate and since we started the shows at 9 pm during the summer, the numbers picked up dramatically.” As for the show itself, Bjork has been entertaining comedy crowds with his strange view of everyday life and a look at the past that virtually

These bees lay their eggs in narrow cavities within dead trees or hollow stems. Many will also nest in artificial nest boxes that can be easily constructed and installed in areas where we wish to provide an additional nesting habitat. The cost is $12 per nest box. A program titled Tasty Herb Pot Workshop will take place on Thursday, June 15 at 10 am. Join Dana Duxbury Fox and create your own Herb Pot to take home. You will be able to enjoy fresh herbs all summer long. Dana will also discuss other herbs you may want to establish in your garden or have on your patio. Having performed alongside some of the top names in the business, Bjork has shared the stage with the likes of Dane Cook, Steven Wright, Dom Irrera, Dave Chappelle, Gilbert Gottfried, Joe Rogan, and more. Bjork has performed in Las Vegas, as well as the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut; Hilarities in Orlando, FL and Cleveland, OH; TSM Comedy Club in Louisville, KY; Crackers in Indianapolis, IN; Penguins in Cedar Rapids, IA, and many, many others, as well as being a New England favorite. Gartley has been a semifinalist in both the Boston and the Portland Comedy Festivals, and he has opened for national acts such as Jeff Dunham, Steven Wright, and Lenny Clarke. With his quick, critical observations and witty humor, Gartley made a name for himself as one of the hardest working acts in the business. The July 15 comedy show at Pitman’s brings the return of Lenny Clarke, the Boston and national comedy legend that sold out last summer’s show at Pitman’s.

Cajun Bluesman Coming to Plymouth

T H E

The Flying Monkey Performance Center in Plymouth welcomes back Tab Benoit on Thursday, June 8 at 7:30 pm. Known best for his gritty blues, the songwriter and guitarist currently is on tour playing his “swamp pop” and blues jams across the country. Tab Benoit is a Cajun man that definitely has the blues. Early in his

career, the music industry encouraged Benoit to shift from blues to rock music to reach a wider audience. He stuck to his Cajun roots despite their advice. Benoit’s bold electric guitar parts are complemented by his vocals, both smooth and gritty, creating a Delta blues style that ranges from reflective and sincere to dangerous and exciting.

June 5, 2017 • Day Tripping Continued from page 15 Andover. It is another quiet village and has a lot of pretty scenery. Passing through Bristol, I soon found my way to Rt. 104/New Hampton. I stayed on this route until I came to Meredith, which was very busy with traffic on the sunny weekend afternoon. From Meredith, I took Rt. 25 toward Center Harbor and on through Moultonboro. I took a right hand turn onto Rt. 171 and before long, I saw the left turn for Ossipee Park Road. Please drive carefully on this road, because it will lead you up the mountain. Once cresting the rise, you will have beautiful views of the lush, rolling fields and horse stables for Riding in the Clouds. I was on a bit of a schedule at this point, knowing the afternoon was waning. So I drove to the Castle parking lot and headed right into the Carriage House. It was a busy place, and many diners were still enjoying lunch in the café. The charming trolley was parked outside, and passengers were boarding for a ride up to the famed Lucknow (Castle in the Clouds). If you have not yet visited the Castle, you “gotta do it” as I heard one man advising another visitor on the day I was there. The views are unsurpassed, the story and history of the estate and the architecture are memorable indeed. I’ve been to the Castle many times, and so I was familiar with the Carriage House Gallery (with free admission). It is on the first floor and easy to spot.

The exhibit was titled “Finding Place on Paper: Contemporary Poets and Printmakers Explore the Lakes Region and White Mountains.” The exhibit gallery space isn’t huge, but I love the intimacy of the setting and it was just right for this particular show. The multi-media exhibit showcases work by local artists and poets and provides a wonderful perspective on artists’ and poets’ personal connections to some of New Hampshire’s most naturally beautiful environments. The unique combination of words and visual images highlighted how different people (artists and poets) interpret the natural world. Poems were displayed alongside the prints, and even a rustic white birch log had words written on it! The wonderful exhibit is on view through October 22. Call Castle in the Clouds at 603-4765900 or visit www.castleintheclouds. org. to view the extensive listing of events. Heading back to my home after the long, but fruitful day trip, I was satisfied that I had found some new and off-the-beaten path day trip adventures for the many motorcyclists who come to the Lakes Region each June. While motorcyclists come for the excitement and entertainment, now and then they may wish to glimpse a more sedate portion of the state, and learn about its sometimes-unusual history. And if truly curious about what lies down a dirt road or in a historic building or at a castle, like me, they won’t mind getting a little bit lost.

Bees, Worm Farming and Islands at Gilford Library! June offers a variety of programs for the public at the Gilford Public Library on Potter Hill Road in Gilford. Whatever your interests or tastes, the library has something for everyone. A program titled Low Impact Development & Pollinator Planting will take place at the library on Tuesday, June 6 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Learn how to better develop land ecologically with Lisa Morin from the Belknap Country Conservation District. Worms are one of the best things for a healthy garden, but growers often neglect them. Learn how to build a private worm farm to generate rich compost and ‘worm tea’ with Molly Harper at the Gilford Public Library on Thursday, June 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. By attending this workshop, growers will have the designs and knowledge

to create their own worm farms. The library will have a worm farm going throughout the summer, so attendees will be able to see a working example. Lake Winnipesaukee is a marvel of the Lakes Region. Each of its 253 islands is unique. That’s one reason why Ron Guilmette set out to kayak to every single island on the lake with his camera. He and co-author Jay Leccese released their award winning book ‘The Islands of Winnipesaukee’ with over 275 photographs, and they documented their adventures on the lake. Then it’s off to the lonely grasslands of Manchuria to see 300 Siberian Cranes en route to their breeding grounds, and Red-crowned and White-naped Cranes with Oriental Storks on their breeding territory, not to mention the vanishing Pallas’s Bunting in Outer Mongolia, and Great Bustards. One-thousands miles to the west is the shining Koko Nor Lake, gateway to the Tibetan Plateau, with a Himalayan Griffon hovering over an ancient Chinese temple, an Elliot’s Laughingthrush, the beautiful Bar-headed Goose, a “Gulag” Prison, 80 Yaks with snow-covered mountains behind them, Eur-lag Pass and its temple, alpine plants and Blood Pheasants. See this all, hear their stories, and enjoy a program that features beautiful birds and their habitats. Dana and Bob Fox began birding in their youth. They have birded the United States (seeing 750 species) and the world (6,000 species), visiting six continents and over 40 countries.

Yoga4Life Cardio, Circuit and Yoga Studio Expands Hours, Classes and Staff Pamela Swanick, owner of Yoga4Life, is pleased to announce the hours of the studio will be expanding as of June 27. From Monday to Friday, the studio will be open from 7 am to 7 pm. Pamela is coming back to New Hampshire from her Central American location, where she has been teaching yoga on the beach to people from all over the world. Pamela’s 2017 classes in Wolfeboro will be focusing on the ocean, taught along with the sound of gentle ocean waves to help provide you with complete concentration, while staying centered with nature and your breath to allow you to experience the true meaning of yoga. Pamela’s classes will resume after the Fourth of July. June 27 is also the day Yoga4Life kicks off a new Hoopercize class that will be taught by Angela O’Keefe. The class will start at 8 am and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hoopercize is a no-to-low impact exercise plan that can be enjoyed by all. The benefits include a stronger and more toned body, improved balance and coordination, and self-confidence. The unique combination of Pilates and yogalike moves will build core strength. The magical circle, “the hoop,” is used as a prop in Barre workouts. Foundational hula-hoop skills alongside specific muscle targeted exercises will increase your heart rate for a great cardio workout. Let Hoopercize get your selfexpression and creativity kick started. There’s limited space available, so register early. Angela O’Keefe has been teaching hula-hoop classes in the Lakes Region since 2014. She has been trained in Hoopnotica Methods I and II, Hoopnotica Kids, Teach Kids to

Shelby York, photo by Woodward Photography Hoop and FXP Hula Hoop Fitness. In addition, she has performed at local fairs, run children’s programs, staff wellness programs and conducted non-profit programs to benefit the community. Her love of hula hooping inspired her to create a group called Lakes Region Hooper’s where she taught members to represent New Hampshire in a worldwide video and to perform the 2014 World Hoop Day Dance. In addition, Angela has taught at the New England Flow Fest. (Visit and like her page at www.facebook.com/ AngeliisHoops/). Another local yoga aficionado, Shelby York, will be joining Yoga4Life, to train on circuit, run the front desk, and teach various classes including yoga, TRX, PiYo and BodyPump. Shelby, a native of Wolfeboro, initially began her yoga journey in 2002 taking power yoga classes with Pamela Swanick. In 2009, she took the next step and joined her local gym. Shortly thereafter she attended a training weekend at Les Mills BodyPump and

reached her goal of becoming a class instructor in 2010. By February of 2011, she added the Les Mills BodyBalance program, a blend of yoga, pilates and Tai Chi, to her teaching resume. In 2012 Shelby obtained both her Spinning and TRX certificates. Even still, yoga called. In 2013 Shelby graduated from the Yoga NH teacher-training program under the

guidance of Maureen Miller and Stacey Gibbons. Since then, Shelby has continued to expand her knowledge and understanding of yoga. In her most recent endeavor, she attended SUP fitness training with Michelle Clark of Full Moon Paddleboard so that she might bring her enthusiasm for yoga and fitness to the water. In her yoga practice she enjoys both the challenges of Ashtanga and Vinyasa style classes as well as the solace found in Hatha and Restorative based classes. As a teacher she makes every effort to bring her energy and understanding to each individual in her class. Shelby is grateful for the opportunity to practice and teach among such a dedicated and close knit community, and to the many teachers, fellow students and friends who have provided inspiration, guidance and companionship along the way.
