It’s Time for the 45th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show By Rosalie Triolo Summer is here and with it, the muchanticipated Antique and Classic Boat Show. Residents, vacationers, and young and old will be at the Wolfeboro Town Docks this summer for the 45th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show. Always held on the last Saturday in July, this year’s boat show will take place at the Wolfeboro Town Docks on July 28 from 9 am to 2 pm, rain or shine. The Boat Show was originally held at the Weirs Beach Docks in Laconia. After 29 years at Weirs Beach, the venue was moved to the Public Docks in Meredith in 2003 and remained there until 2016, when it was moved for a third time to its current location at the Wolfeboro Town Docks. The idea for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (NEC-ACBS) was conceived at the 1976 Boston Boat Show when a group of wooden boat enthusiasts admired the show-winning woodies belonging to Ted Larter “Scotty Too” Gold Cup Racer and Roy Howe’s prize winning 18-ft. Garwood, “Norma Jean.” Two Lake Winnipesaukee Marine dealers, Jim Irwin and Vince Callahan, who were not only competitors but also friends, in 1973 attended the Clayton New York Antique Boat Show. With the idea of preserving old boats, Jim and Vince worked the summer and fall of 1973 making plans for the first Annual National Northeastern Antique and Classic Boat Show and successfully organized two “Woodie” boat shows at Weirs Beach Docks on Lake

Winnipesaukee. Both Irwin and Callahan were charter members of the Antique and Classic Boat Society National and involved in the early planning stages of the NECACBS. A strong interest was shown by a group of New England antique boat aficionados to form an organized New England group. An initial application contained over 40 signatures for a New England “Region” encompassing a large geographical area, including the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. It was thought by calling it a “Region,” that at some future date this term would be helpful for other chapters to get started. In early 1976 a constitution and by-laws were presented and approved. The “Region,” was officially accepted as the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society, and its first president was Gerry Davidson. The Show encompasses several Judging Classes from Pre-War Cockpit Runabouts to 22’ and Pre-War Cockpit Runabouts over 22’, Pre-War Utility Boats to 22’ and Pre-War Utility Boats

over 22’ to Post -War Cockpit Runabouts to 22’ and Post-War Cockpit Runabouts over 22’, and Post -War Utility Boats to 22’ and Post-War Utility Boats over 22’. There are categories for Lakers and Launches, Reproductions, Prototypes and Modified, Sail and Row Canoe, Outboard Boats and another category for Outboard Motors, Gold Cup/Gentlemen Racers and Non-Wood Classic Boats. The Quarterly Newsletter, Cutwater, was first published in 1978 as a means of communication with chapter members. The “Trading Dock” which appears in the Cutwater as well as on the NECACBS website, is free to NEC-ACBS members. The Mission Statement of the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society reflects its purpose, goals and promotes and encourages a love, respect and enjoyment of historic, antique and classic boats. This Mission Statement appeared in the Winter 2018 issue of the Cutwater, the magazine of the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society: “To Bring Together people with a common interest in historic, antique

and classic boats, sharing fellowship, information, experience and ideas. To Protect the heritage of boating by promoting first, the preservation and second, the restoration of historic antique and classic boats. To Promote, further, and encourage a love and enjoyment of all aspects of historic, antique and classic boats. To Serve as a communication channel for our membership, the public and any other entities regarding information related to historic and antique and classic boating, to include service as a clearing house and referral service for all information relating to historic, antique and classic boating. To Inspire and support quality boat shows and related events. To educate our membership and the general public concerning safety and protocol as it relates to historic, antique and classic boating.” From advertising flyers to works of art, Phil Spencer and Peter Ferber joined forces to create and develop the concept for the first poster for the 1994 Boat Show. Phil Spencer, past President of the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society (1996 – 1997), and a boat restorer was given the task, by the Chapter’s Board of Directors, to improve the show posters. After many months of drawing, sketching and kicking around ideas, Phil decided to enlist the help of Peter Ferber, a renowned and respected local • Boat Show Continued on page 5

Old Camps Program at Lake Winnipesaukee Museum The Lake Winnipesaukee Museum will host Kathy Eaton in a program titled, “Old Camps on Lake Wentworth and Winnipesaukee” on Wednesday, July 18 at 7 pm. The event is free for Lake Winnipesaukee Historical Society members, and for non-members there is a $5 fee. In her presentation, Kathy Eaton will draw on her family’s experience carrying on the legacy of a Winnipesaukee island camp built in 1893. Offering anecdotes from seven generations, Kathy will tell the story of the camp’s evolution from a simple family retreat to a property now shared by a still-growing family with over 100 descendants. She will also offer her perspective on challenges and solutions in transferring family property to subsequent generations. Writer Kathy Eaton lives in Wolfeboro, where she and her husband

Richard own and operate the Wolfeboro Trolley Company (‘Molly the Trolley’). Kathy began her writing career with the Granite State News in 1974, after graduating from Suffolk University in Boston. In 1984, she co-founded The Laker newspaper, where she served as editor and primary writer until 2001. She is presently a public relations and marketing consultant (NHwordsmith. com). Programs focusing on Lakes Region and New Hampshire history are held at the Lake Winnipesaukee Museum throughout the summer season. The museum, open to the public Wednesday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, is located on Route 3 in Weirs Beach, next to Funspot. Seating is limited; please RSVP to 603-366-5950 or email info@ lwhs.us.

Cormac McCarthy to Make Bandstand Debut The second week of the Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand summer concert series will feature a new act on the bandstand. Cormac McCarthy, one of New England’s preeminent folk singer/ songwriters, was supposed to open last year’s concert series, but his show was cancelled due to rainy weather. He is back this year, taking to the bandstand on Saturday, July 21. McCarthy made his singing debut at the age of three on WKRC in Cincinnati, belting out Davy Crockett on his dad’s radio show. Some 20 years later he returned to public performance, this time singing his own compositions with a bit more experience. While he was born in Ohio, McCarthy has been rooted in New England since he was 10 years old, growing up in towns where economies teetered on marginal sustenance from logging and paper and woolen mills. While the area was small, his musical influences were not, as his father’s love for jazz and classical music introduced him to a wide range of music. However, when his sister visited from college with the

recordings of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and others, things clicked for McCarthy and he traded in his clarinet for a guitar. During his college years, McCarthy studied literature and music and spent much of his time reading, playing guitar and working in the mills to pay for school. His college roommate encouraged him to make his music public and they shared local gigs and storytelling marathons. McCarthy was nominated for both Outstanding Folk/Acoustic Act and Outstanding Folk/Acoustic Album by the Boston Music Awards for his album “Troubled Sleep”. He was asked to perform in Boston’s WUMB Folk Radio 10th anniversary celebration and has performed on the Newport Folk Festival stage three times, and has appeared on NPR’s Mountain Stage radio show. Jeff McLaughlin from the Boston Globe said of McCarthy, “A distinctive songwriter with a warm, powerful, inherently melodic baritone, a fine guitarist and a devastating wit... enormous writing gifts, capable of putting chills into your spine or a silly

Spark Your Inspiration with a Painting Class New England-based artist Ed Wintner (www.edwintner.com) will be at Art Works on Sunday, August 5 for a painting class on “Color & Contour in Landscapes—Principals Anyone Can Apply.” The one-day workshop will take place from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the

Art Works Studio in Chocorua. Learn how color changes with shadow and distance, how to bring these ideas into a landscape, receding objects, overlapping hills/mountains, and tips on how to paint trees. This class is open to any level of artist— “the use of

color doesn’t depend on your ‘drawing ability’ and you can learn a lot about tree structure even if you can’t make totally ‘realistic’ trees. Ed explains, “I approach landscape painting from the idea that threedimensional space can be created through simple color gradients whose boundaries define sharp contours and silhouettes. This is a style of painting that I have recently developed on a large scale, building from previous work in small watercolors. Trees have always been a favorite part of a landscape for me, and in my paintings, I try to have the silhouettes of trees provide an interplay of positive and negative space. These natural forms create depth through

spatial relation both to each other and to the contours of the landscape.” Ed’s dramatic landscapes can be seen at Art Works Gallery, Chocorua and at the gallery of Florentine Frames in Weston, Massachusetts. A short supply list will be provided upon registering, acrylic paints preferred. The class fee is $75.00 per person, and MC/Visa will be accepted. Contact Art Works-Chocorua Creative Arts Center to pre-register and with any questions; call 603-323-8041, email artworks4us2@gmail.com or visit www.chocoruaartworks.com. Art Works is located at 132 Rt. 16/ White Mountain Highway, Chocorua. It is open daily in July and August.

The Weirs Action Committee once again is presenting Fireworks at Weirs Beach this summer. The display is offered every Friday night at 10 pm, until the final show on Sunday of Labor Day weekend at 10 pm. Atlas Fireworks is instrumental by providing the shows and helping to support this tradition. Half Moon Enterprises and the Weirs Action Committee (WAC) sponsor the Labor Day show. But since there are no specific sponsors for the regular Friday night fireworks, which cost roughly $3,000 per show, there is a great need for community support. WAC thanks the many local partners who have provided support in the past, and hopes that businesses, residents and visitors alike are motivated to send in donations to ensure that this event will continue to make Weirs Beach and the Lakes Region a destination

for families. For up-to-date fireworks information and for secure donations, visit www.WeirsBeachFireworks.com and/or Facebook at Facebook.com/ WeirsBeach.WAC. The Weirs Action Committee is a nonprofit 501(c) 4 organization. Members are made up of local businesses and residents interested in preserving the natural beauty and attributes of Weirs Beach. The group meets monthly and welcomes new members. Contact: wac@weirsbeach.org. The dates and times for the summer of 2018 fireworks at Weirs Beach are: Holiday show: Labor Day Weekend Sunday, September 2 at 10 pm. There is no rain date for the holiday show. Friday night shows at 10 pm: Friday, July 20, 27, August 3, 10, 17; rain date make-up, August 24.

The Barn is Completed and Open! The Clark Museum Complex, located on South Main Street in Wolfeboro, first operated as a public museum in 1927. At that time, the Wolfeboro Historical Society was approved to manage the Clark House, the 1788 homestead of Greenleaf B. Clark, a long-time prominent real estate owner and entrepreneur. Noted for purchasing almost any available building (sold without the land), Clark relocated many structures to his own properties using oxen teams, often pulling buildings across ice or snow in the winter. The buildings usually were retained as rental units. Saving and moving buildings was a common event, an example of

“Yankee” thrift. Mr. Clark generously donated the homestead and the large surrounding land parcel to the Town of Wolfeboro. The Museum Complex has seen several major changes through the years. The Pleasant Valley Schoolhouse, a one-room school circa 1805, had been used as a school until 1910, then a Community Center into the 1940s. Donated to the Town in 1959, it was moved to the Museum Complex and restored for public viewing. The third building on the site was constructed in 1981, and is a replica of the 1860s South Wolfeboro Fire Company building, which had

deteriorated too far to restore. An extensive restoration of the town’s original two-hand pumped Fire Engines and two Hose Carriers, dating as early as the 1840s, was undertaken by the Historical Society. A beautiful 1875 steam-powered Amoskeag Pumper, and a factory Fire Alarm System, c. 1900, are also exhibited, on loan to the town of Wolfeboro by a local couple. Additional space had been needed for quite some time. Donated items and historical records had been accumulating, and an inventory was impossible and viewing couldn’t be expanded. Finally, in 2006, a major undertaking was proposed to add a barn on the property. The location would match the site of the original barn. Approved by the Board of Selectmen in July, 2006, the Wolfeboro Historical Society purchased an existing barn in Hampton, NH, believed built in 1824. Professionally dismantled, the parts were delivered to the museum parking lot. Erecting the building, providing a shell around the old post and beam structure, redesigning the interior to meet todays’ standards, including handicapped access requirements, was a major undertaking. Some tasks required licensed professionals and others were accomplished by a small team of volunteers who donated thousands of hours. Finally, the project reached completion

and a Certificate of Occupancy was granted on July 3, 2018. Visitors during the week were the first to enjoy touring the old barn structure (the interior was maintained in its original form as much as possible) and viewing period exhibits never before shown. Preparation of the exhibits has been ongoing for several years. In addition to the items accumulated over many decades, many people have come forward with further donations of vintage items. The collection is an eclectic display, including items normally found in an agricultural area, things related to local trades and industries, items found in a household, and a few oddities. Dating ranges from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. There is also an extensive catalogued library, house files and genealogy records, which have been in use for several years. Research requests on local history are answered year-round, even though the museum is not open in the off-season. The barn is a self-guided facility, with signage explaining the exhibits. Personnel are available to answer questions and provide further information. Restrooms, including handicapped-accessible, are in the barn. Visiting hours from July until Labor Day are 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and 10 am to 2 pm on Saturday. Visit wolfeborohistoricalsociety.org for further information.

Great Waters Music Festival Welcomes Rebecca Robbins By Rosalie Triolo In past years, many of us have spent a pleasant evening with Broadway singer and actress, Rebecca Robbins, at the Annual Great Waters Music Festival Fundraiser. This year, on July 26, the fundraiser will be held in the Barn at the Inn on Main in Wolfeboro. How did Rebecca become involved in the Great Waters fundraisers? She explained, “I was asked, by my

neighbor here in the Lakes Region, ‘if I would be interested in taking part in the Great Waters Fundraiser.’ I was both delighted and very interested, so of course I said yes, and here I am five years later.” Rebecca went on to say, “At last summer’s fundraiser at Brewster Academy’s Pinkney Boathouse, we were an intimate group. We spent the evening singing songs from the different

musicals, Cats, Sound of Music and From the age of seven, Rebecca aspired others. I also shared some stories of my to be a singer. With encouragement adventures while on tour that year.” from her parents, she took voice Reflecting back, Rebecca went on to lessons. After graduating high school, mention, “You know, you never forget Rebecca went on to college to study those people who have helped you along opera. Moving to New York City, she the way. And I remember how grateful I began the auditioning process, which was and still am to Gerry Mack, former had its ups and downs. Choral Director of the Great Waters Since then, Rebecca has appeared Music Festival, for being supportive of • Great Waters my career.” Continued on page 27

in many productions both on and off Broadway. With her debut in the New York Philharmonic production of My Fair Lady, starring Kelsey Grammer, and the following year making her Broadway debut in Jill Santoriello’s musical version of A Tale of Two Cities, based on the book by Charles Dickens, Ms. Robbins’ career progressed and she was on track. Every so often, however, there is a curve in that track taking you in a totally different direction for a while. A few months after her Broadway debut, Rebecca was diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Enduring months of recuperation from surgery, undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, she is presently cancer free and back on track resuming her musical stage career. She continues her recording career and has lent her voice to the soundtrack of the 2015 film short, The Secret of Joy, a film raising awareness of pediatric cancer. Rebecca splits her time between her home in Philadelphia and a family vacation home in the Lakes Region. Coming from Philadelphia, Rebecca is a devoted Phillies baseball fan and an

enthusiastic Philadelphia Eagles fan. At last year’s Phillies opening season’s baseball game, Rebecca was given the privilege of singing “God Bless America.” In 1995, Dr. Gerald Mack founded Great Waters Music Festival. Its purpose was to promote live musical performances by both amateur and professional artists which would appeal to a variety of audiences and introduce diverse styles of music and artists to a variety of musical tastes. Each summer Dr. Mack, Choral Director of Great Waters Music Festival, and his wife Nancy, traveled from their home on Nantucket, to spend the eight to 10 weeks of summer performances here in Wolfeboro. In 2009, after 15 years of dedication, Dr. Mack retired. For the past 23 years, Great Waters Musical Festival has provided entertainment for both vacationers from all over the United States and the world and residents of Wolfeboro and surrounding towns. Many remember the original venue for the Great Waters Music Festival productions held under the great white tent, an acoustical pavilion, with a seating capacity of 800 people. Each summer, with the help of many volunteers, the tent was erected

at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee. In 2011, when the great white tent was retired, the venue moved to a state-ofthe-art theatre with seating for 1,000 at the newly constructed Kingswood Art Center in Wolfeboro, where audiences enjoy the music of bands and songs from vocal groups. Then, as now, volunteers give of their time helping to make a success of the Festival, greeting you at the entrance, handing out programs or guiding you to your seat. Diligently working towards another successful season at the Great Waters Music Festival, plans are made well in advance by the Board of Directors, determining the artists that will be available and the right mix of acts. The 2018 season’s program introduces some new acts and some returning performers that have always pleased audiences. The Great Waters Scholarship Program financially supports those

students in the Lakes Region aspiring to become musicians, who exhibit an interest and the talent to further their musical education. In addition, the Festival makes its presence known around Wolfeboro. For the past few years while walking down Main Street or just around the corner on Railroad Avenue in Wolfeboro, you may have noticed colorfully decorated pianos with talented young people or older folks playing new or old familiar songs. The pianos were placed at various locations courtesy of the Great Waters “Street Piano Project”. This year’s fundraiser will be held on July 26 in the Barn at the Inn on Main in Wolfeboro. Whether it be your first or one of many fundraisers you have attended, you will enjoy an evening listening to the exquisite voice of Rebecca Robbins accompanied on piano by Dr. Christopher Shepard. For information on the shows, visit www. greatwaters.org or call 603-569-7710.

Governor Declares July ‘Lakes Appreciation Month’ In a recent proclamation, Governor Sununu declared July 2018 “Lakes Appreciation Month” in New Hampshire, citing the importance of the state’s hundreds of lakes and ponds which contribute to the quality of life of all citizens and the state’s economic well-being. In New Hampshire, lakes and ponds are an important part of the natural environment and provide vital habitat for wildlife, they are a source of recreation and scenic beauty for citizens and visitors to enjoy, and they are valuable economic resources that support business and tourism within our state. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take time throughout this month - and year-round - to appreciate all that New Hampshire’s lakes and ponds have to offer. Whether you enjoy swimming, boating, fishing, or admiring the scenery, there’s something for nearly everyone to appreciate when it comes to our lakes and ponds. NH LAKES invites people to share what they enjoy about the state’s lakes and ponds by entering the organization’s photo or art contest this month. Find out more at www. nhlakes.org.

The Governor’s proclamation also recognizes the need to protect our lakes and ponds for future generations of New Hampshire’s citizens. “While New Hampshire is home to some of best lakes in the country, the health and enjoyment of our lakes is threatened by polluted runoff water, invasive species, and more,” commented Tom O’Brien, NH LAKES President. “The good news is, there are simple things we can all do to help keep our lakes clean and healthy.” NH LAKES encourages residents and visitors to take part in an activity this month to protect our lakes.

Organize a lake shoreline clean-up project, properly disposing of any collected trash that could be a hazard to wildlife. Have your septic system pumped regularly if you live close to a waterbody to help prevent nutrients and bacteria leeching into the lake that could contribute to algae and bacteria blooms. If you live along a waterbody, plant native shrubs along the shoreline to reduce erosion, soak up runoff water, and deter waterfowl (like geese) from visiting your property.

If boating, before leaving the ramp for the next waterbody, remove all aquatic vegetation from your boat and trailer and, in an area where the water won’t flow directly back into the lake, open all drain plugs to help prevent the spread of invasive species. A copy of the Governor’s proclamation can be found on the NH LAKES website at www.nhlakes.org. General information about Lakes Appreciation Month can be found at the North American Lake Management Society website at www.nalms.org. NH LAKES is the only statewide, member-supported nonprofit organization working to keep all of New Hampshire’s 1,000 lakes clean and healthy, now and in the future. They work with partners, promote clean water policies and responsible use, and inspire the public to care for our lakes. For more information, visit www.nhlakes.org, email info@nhlakes.org, or call 603226-0299.

Did you know that in 2017, there were over 807 million visitors to America’s state parks? That’s more than double the population of the entire country! Having state parks benefits the economy, the environment, and the health and wellness of the community. New Hampshire alone has 93 state park properties that provide plenty of recreation for all ages and abilities. These parks include beaches, campgrounds, historic sites, natural areas with a multitude of trails, and more to explore. Check out one of our local state parks this summer for a memorable and fun trip. In North Conway on Echo Lake Road is Echo Lake State Park, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. This state park is a great place to take the family for a swim and picnic. A scenic trail around the lake provides great views of the sheer, 700-foot Cathedral Ledge which towers over the lake. A mile-long auto road and hiking trails lead to the top of Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed. Both Cathedral and nearby White Horse ledges are popular rock and ice climbing walls as well. Call 603-356-2672 for more information. White Lake State Park off of Route 16 in Tamworth is so popular that it’s been known to sell out on nice weekends and holidays. I brought my kids there at the end of last summer, and we swam, enjoyed a pleasant walk on the trail around the lake, and took advantage of the playground by the water. It was easy to see why it would be a popular destination. The park lies along the shore of White Lake, which is a glacial lake. During the Ice Age, glacial ice was buried beneath glacial debris. When the ice melted, a depression was created which gradually filled with water. Other than swimming and hiking, the lake offers good trout fishing, and boat rentals are available, which includes

Families can enjoy nature-based programs each week, all summer long as presented by the SCA Interpretive Rangers. Check the program schedule online for more information or call 603323-7350. Wentworth State Park is located at 297 Governor Wentworth Highway in Wolfeboro. This park spans 50 acres and is located on the shore of scenic Wentworth Lake. Popular activities include swimming, picnicking, and fishing. Picnic tables and flush toilets are provided. For more information, call 603-569-3699. Nearby on Wentworth Farm Road is the Governor Wentworth Historic Site. Take in some state history and explore the remains of a northern plantation built just before the outbreak of the American Revolution by New Hampshire’s second Royal Governor, John Wentworth. The mansion burned to the ground in 1820 and became the site of an archaeological dig where artifacts were carefully pieced together. Laconia also offers a bit of history at the Endicott Rock State Historic Site on Endicott Street. This may be the oldest public monument in New

England. The name of John Endicott, Governor of Massachusetts Bay, and the initials of Edward Johnson and Simon Willard, Commissioners of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and of John Sherman and Jonathan Ince, Surveyors, were inscribed on the rock on August 1, 1652. The rock marked the assumed headwaters of the Merrimack River, and under the original Bay Charter of 1629, the northern boundary of the colony was marked at three miles north of the Merrimack. Also in Laconia is Ahern State Park at 43 Great Bay Lane, which spans 128 acres, with 3,500 feet of shoreline on Lake Winnisquam. Swimming, picnicking, and walking trails provide plenty of summer fun at this park. For • State Park Continued on page 30

July 16, 2018 Wellington State Park at 614 West Shore Road in Bristol fills up quickly on beautiful weekends and it’s easy to see why. It offers the largest freshwater swimming beach in the New Hampshire State Park system. The park also maintains volleyball and horseshoe courts as well as a snack bar that offers a variety of snacks, ice cream, cold drinks, beach and picnic items, and souvenirs. Gas grills are allowed along with wood and/or charcoal fires for cooking. A developed boat launch operated by N.H. Fish & Game adjoins the park, providing boaters free year-round access to Newfound Lake. Kayak rentals are also available. Wellington State Park also has an extensive trail system. The peninsula nature trail features picnic areas, designated fishing areas, plant identification markers, and spectacular views of Newfound Lake and Cliff and Belle Islands. A well-marked hiking trail leads from the park and provides hikers access to Goose Pond, the Sugarloafs, Bear Mountain, Welton Falls, and Mt. Cardigan. Organized youth group camping is offered on both Belle and Cliff Islands. Reservations are required and may be made from mid-May through the summer season by calling the main office at 603-271-3556. For all other questions, call 603-744-2197. Finally, the Daniel Webster Birthplace State Historic Site on North Road in Franklin is a state treasure that everyone

in the area should visit at least once. Daniel Webster was one of our country’s most respected orators and statesmen, and this two-room log cabin offers a glimpse into the early years of his life and farm life in the 1700s. The setting is still as quiet and secluded as it must’ve been all those years ago. The cabin is open from 9 am to 5 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from May 27 until October 8, including Labor Day and Columbus Day. For details, call 603-934-5057. Further information on any of the above parks, including park maps and admission fees, can be found at www. nhstateparks.org. Keep in mind that dates and times are weather dependent and subject to change. Call the park directly for up-to-date hours. For beach advisory information, visit the Department of Environmental Services Beach Advisories website page, also available through the NH State Parks website. Parks are usually open for recreation year-round; however they are typically not staffed in the off season and gates may be closed. Please keep parks clean by following the carry-in/ carry-out rule. Most parks do not allow pets in the busy summer season, and if they do they must be leashed. Check the NH State Parks Pets Policy online for more details. Have a happy summer and enjoy the beauty of the Lakes Region at one of our state parks!

Enjoy the Museum Loop this summer in Wolfeboro

There are fewer places in New Hampshire as beautiful as the town of Wolfeboro, which has brought three museums on the NH Heritage Museum Trail together to create The Museum Loop. On this loop, which will begin at 9:30 am every Friday during July and August (weather permitting), passengers will board the antique boat, “Millie B” (10 persons) or The Trolley (10 persons) at the Town docks. They will then head to The Libby Museum. Passengers will return by the opposite means of transport on this “Libby Loop” and can then enjoy Trolley-narrated tours all day as well as entrance to The Boat Museum (included). Additional entry fees apply to The Wright Museum and The Clarke House Museum (not a Trail member). Alana Albee, executive director of The Libby, said they are all working together “so visitors and residents can enjoy the many small museums in Wolfeboro. It’s quite unusual for such a rural town to

have so many cultural options—and with the lake and the summer Trolley, it makes for an especially delightful way to see it all,” she said. Mike Culver, executive director of The Wright Museum, agrees and said he believes there is no town quite like Wolfeboro. “We have incredible museums in this town with easy access to nature, trails, the lake,” he said. “The Museum Loop is a great opportunity for couples, or even families, to explore all Wolfeboro has to offer.” The cost for The Museum Loop is $33 for adults and $12 for children. To learn more, call 603-998-3286, as advanced phone and online booking is required. www.nhbm.org. With numerous events, exhibits and programs for all ages this summer, the NH Heritage Museum Trail expects close to 250,000 visitors in 2018. For more information about any museum on The Trail, visit www.nhmuseumtrail. org. Search for ‘New Hampshire Heritage Trail’ and find it on Facebook.

NH’s ‘Moose’ license plate combinations sell out; new letter added

Travelers on New H a m p s h i r e ’s roadways this summer have something new to watch for when they play the license plate game: the state’s popular Moose Plate program has added the letter “P” to plate combinations. When the first Conservation Number Plates were issued in December 2000, the letter “C,” for “conservation,” was part of each standard five-digit number combination. As “C” plates sold out, the letter “H,” for “heritage,” replaced the “C.” This spring, the first plates with the letter “P,” for “preservation,” were issued. Standard combination Moose Plates still include a stacked “C” for “Conservation” and “H” for “Heritage” next to the illustrated moose, which was designed by Granite State artist Jim Collins. New Hampshire’s motto “Live Free or Die” is also part of the plate’s design. Funds from Moose Plate sales support a wide variety of conservation, heritage and preservation programs in New Hampshire, including planting wild flowers along New Hampshire

highways, studying threatened plant and animal species, securing conservation easements and preserving publicly owned historic properties and artifacts. Every dollar raised through the sales of Moose Plates goes directly to supporting designated programs. More than $20 million has been raised since the program began and projects in all 10 New Hampshire counties have benefitted from Moose Plate funds. Moose Plates may be purchased at city and town clerks’ offices when registering a car or truck. The annual cost for a Moose Plate is $30; the first year requires a standard $8 plate purchase fee. Vanity Moose Plates and combination Moose / NH State Parks plates are also available for additional charges. Fourth grade students from Holderness Central School started the idea for the Moose Plate program in 1993. Legislation establishing the program passed in 1998. More information about the Moose Plate program is available at mooseplate.com as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

Get Musical in July at the Flying Monkey The Flying Monkey Performance Center presents rock guitarist and songwriter Dave Mason on stage on Thursday, July 19 at 7:30 pm. Rising star Gretchen Rhodes opens. Classic rock fans will be in for a truly memorable evening of timeless music and endless hits, as Rock and Roll Hall of Fame guitar great Dave Mason brings his band and a new show, The Very Best of Dave Mason, to Plymouth NH. This new, live show will enhance the popular 2017 Public Television filmed live concert and feature some of Dave’s most beloved songs like “All Along The Watchtower”, “Only You Know and I Know,” “Every Woman”, and “We Just Disagree” plus the rock anthem “Feelin’ Alright”. The audience will also delight in some deeper tracks from Dave’s albums as well as some of his most favorite songs that have shaped his illustrious career. In addition, Dave will share photos and first hand accounts of rock stories that can only be told by the man who has walked in his shoes. Best known for his soulful voice and unsurpassed guitar playing, Dave was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a founding member of the group Traffic, and continues performing as a solo artist with soldout shows all over the world. His career spans several important rock eras, and encompasses his work as a producer, performer, songwriter, and consummate guitarist. A quintessential ‘Artiste’, Dave has collaborated with numerous members of the music elite, including Jimi Hendrix, George Harrison, Paul

McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton, among many others. “This should be great fun,” states Mason, “…musically, it’s definitely a show not to be missed.” On July 20 at 7:30 pm, comedian Tom Papa will bring an entertaining show to the Monkey. “Relax. It’s good. You’re doing fine.” That’s advice imparted from Tom Papa, Though he’s not yet a household name, Papa is well-known and admired among his colleagues. He’s a veteran of the stand-up circuit and has opened for blockbuster names like Jerry Seinfeld. Tom Papa prioritizes civility in his humor, which is perhaps why he does not take on politics. “I’m kind of on an anti-rudeness campaign,” Papa told Lois Reitzes in an interview during “City Lights.” “My act … is a place where we can just go and enjoy ourselves.” The Kingston Trio returns to The Flying Monkey Performance Center on Saturday, July 21 at 7:30. The trio’s music was instrumental in the American Folk revolution. These days, it can be rare for a musical act from the mid-20th century to resonate with contemporary audiences. The Kingston Trio is one of the fortunate few that have enjoyed longevity in the music industry. With their vibrant delivery and classic lyrics, the trio has roused audiences worldwide • Flying Monkey Continued on page 35

July 16, 2018 • Flying Monkey Continued from page 34 for more than 50 years. Our story begins with Nick Reynolds who, along with Bob Shane and Dave Guard, founded this iconic San Francisco folk group in 1955. Through talent and tenacity they rose to become the undisputed kings of the acoustic musical genre that exploded onto the American scene. From the late ‘50’s through the early ‘60’s they dominated the creation and artistic exploration of folk music. Indeed, in 1958 the Kingston Trio took home the first Grammy ever awarded to a country group. One year later, they were honored with a second Grammy, this time as a folk group. From day one, there were three young kids literally growing up at the elbows of The Kingston Trio: Josh Reynolds, the son (and doppelgånger) of Nick Reynolds. Mike Marvin, Josh’s cousin and “adopted” son of Nick. And Tim Gorelangton, Josh & Mike’s lifetime

friend and one of the only people outside the Kingston Trio with whom Nick Reynolds ever recorded. The unspoken hope of these “Sons of Nick” was to someday re-unite and carry the Kingston Trio legacy to a new level. That time has come. With the rising resurgence of folk music and the Kingston Trio brand now secure in their rightful hands, Josh, Mike and Tim are able to return full-time to their first love -folk music. They have emerged onto today’s music scene taking the helm of The Kingston Trio. A true musical heritage continues, complete with striped shirts and genes. Within this new group thrives the lively joy of music performance and infectious humor that won over audiences throughout the world. A Trio concert was one of the all-time great live show experiences, and these three disciples are following in their very large footsteps. If you were lucky enough to have seen or heard the original Kingston Trio in the 1950’s and ‘60’s, come now

The Lakes Region Planning Commission (LRPC) will be holding the annual Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collections later this summer (July 28 and August 4). However, there are some materials that ARE NOT ACCEPTED at these collections, including latex paint (water-based), unused medications, and electronics. So, what can you do with these materials? Leftover latex paint: Use the paint up on other smaller projects or donate it to a local organization that could use the paint such as a theater group, school, recreational group, camp, or friends, neighbors, family, or even a local paint contractor. If you can’t find a place to donate it, see if your local transfer station facility will accept it at their swap shop. Latex paint is generally good for up to 10 years, and you can determine whether it is still useable by stirring it, and wiping on newspaper. If there are lumps in the paint, then the paint is old and should be dried out and thrown it out in the trash, as it is not considered toxic waste. To help dry out paint, mix in clay-based kitty litter in a ratio of two parts kitty litter to one part paint. Many hardware stores now sell “paint hardener” for this purpose. Some people mix newspaper or sawdust with the paint to speed up the drying time. Unused Medications: Unused medications entering local water sources can cause damage to the health of the community and aquatic life. The two main options for proper disposal are at one of the dozen different drop box locations around the Lakes Region or at

the Lakes Region Household Hazardous Product Facility in Wolfeboro. Go to https://www.dhhs.nh.gov/dcbcs/ bdas/documents/drop-box-locations. pdf for a list of sites for free anonymous drug drop-off. Unwanted Electronics: If your electronic device is still in useable condition, consider donating it through the National Cristina Foundation www. cristina.org or World Computer Exchange www.worldcomputerexchange.org, which in turn distributes old electronics to families in need locally and around the world. There are many toxic chemicals found in electronics, including heavy metals that need to be disposed of properly. Most Lakes Region communities do accept e-waste at their solid waste facility for a modest fee. Again, none of these products will be accepted at the Lakes Region HHW collections, but there are a number of options for safe alternative uses, repurposing, or disposal. If you have questions, or would like more information, visit the LRPC www. lakesrpc.org or contact call 603-2795341. Participating communities are: Alexandria, Belmont, Bridgewater, Bristol, Center Harbor, Effingham, Franklin, Freedom, Gilford, Gilmanton, Hebron, Hill, Holderness, Laconia, Meredith, Moultonborough, New Hampton, Northfield, Ossipee, Sanbornton, Sandwich, Tamworth, Tilton and Tuftonboro; Alton and Wolfeboro are not participating this year.

ON THE WATER… Take a trip on the M/S Mount Washington; it is the most popular way to see many of the lake areas, from the Weirs to Alton Bay, to Wolfeboro, and Center Harbor.
