It’s a perfect summer day as I pull off Route 3 into Weirs Beach. The air is hot, but everything I see is crisp: white clouds across the cobalt sky; newly scored white lines on newly smoothed black asphalt; newly cut granite curbs nestled perfectly against newly poured sidewalks; the bright colored Queen Anne cottages on the north side of Lakeside Avenue and the freshpainted signs of the Winnipesaukee Scenic Railroad, the M/S Mount Washington Cruise Lines and the Winnipesaukee Pier on the south. I inch up the Avenue, enjoying quiet, happy sounds as I slowly pass the sandy beach and people strolling on the boardwalk. I drive by retro style cottage colonies and through the narrow streets and arrangement of cottages on the old Methodist camp meeting grounds. I make a U-turn at the modern AKWA Yacht Club. I’ve done some research and know that Weirs Beach hosts this wonderful hodgepodge of styles— ranging from post-Civil War gingerbread cottages to quaint postWorld War II cabins, mid-century purpose-driven arcades and newly

repurposed, nostalgically-designed lakeside businesses—because it constantly reboots itself. The latest wave of new is front and center at the Winnipesaukee Pier, opened just this season after refurbishing by its new owners, East Coast Flight Craft of New England. All its 14,000 square feet has been redesigned to include new storefronts and dining to look like it’s been there from the start. Folks can take waterskiing lessons, hear live music, and rent boats, just as they did in the Pier’s last heyday. Folks can do all this and also enjoy the beautiful views of grand Lake Winnipesaukee,

just as visitors have since 1652 when Endicott Rock was pegged as the northernmost boundary of England’s Massachusetts Bay Colony. Except, perhaps, for those stern Puritan colonizers, the focus of development at Weirs Beach has always been to entice visitors to leave the cares of the everyday behind and simply have fun. It’s fitting that the Winnipesaukee Pier has come alive in new ways in 2017, for it’s exactly 100 years since Jim Irwin came to town. The musician assembled a band and with horn in hand, traveled the country. Called to a gig at the Music Hall in the Weirs in 1917, he fell in

love. The New Weirs Grand Hotel hosted enthusiastic, entertainmenthungry guests, as did myriad smaller accommodations, including the New Hampshire Veterans Association cottages and tent site and the Methodist campgrounds. The B & M Railroad brought in hundreds of short- and long-term tourists daily, and a music scene was well established. In 1919, after World War I ended, Jim traded in his soldier uniform and returned to the Weirs. In 1921, he bought the Music Hall and Pier for $1500 and built up both businesses, expanding offerings and capacity at the Hall, and growing the boat business. After a devastating fire in 1924 that destroyed his Music Hall, the New Hotel Weirs and numerous other buildings, Irwin decided to consolidate his holdings and so he rebuilt a center for music over the bustling and now-expanded Winnipesaukee Pier. By 1926, Irwin’s $1500 real estate investment was appraised on the tax roles for $60,000. Irwin built it, but what made people come? Partly, it was the crystal ball hanging over the grand ballroom where couples danced to the sounds of first-rate regional • Winnipesaukee Pier Continued on page 5

bands five nights a week, and to national headliners like Duke Ellington, Sammy Kaye, Cab Calloway, and Glenn Miller the sixth. In later years, there were two nights of headliners when dancers swayed to the sounds of Tommy Dorsey one evening and rock ’n roll-loving teens would pulse to the sounds of the Beach Boys or Shem & the Pharaohs the next. But the Gardens didn’t stop there. They hired the Wizard of the North who rode a steep steel wire into the lake several times a day. They hosted highly competitive annual dance contests through the 1930s, and starting in 1925, they ran the first regional competition in Miss America pageant history, the Miss Winnipesaukee contest. Eventually, it’s difficult to tell where Jim Irwin started and where other savvy promoters picked up, but from the 1920s through the 70s, Weirs Beach billed itself the “Recreational Center of the Lakes

Region,” and “New England’s Favorite Inland Resort.” In an interview with Christine Norris for This Week magazine in 1988, Jim Irwin, Jr. described the rhythm of summer life at the Weirs. “We had speedboat rides off the end of the pier, and people would come up on a weekend and take a speedboat ride. Then they’d go down to Endicott Rock [the sandy beach was built in 1942] and they’d swim, and then they’d go home for lunch at their

lodges. They’d get on the Mount Washington cruise ship and they’d go to Wolfeboro and around the lake on the steamship, then they’d come home and eat in their lodges and they’d come and walk down the boardwalk and go to the dance. It was quite an era…” Weirs Beach promotional schedules from the period show dances scheduled until 1, 2 or even 4 am, breaking at dawn. There were boat races, waterski exhibitions,

The Weirs Water Ski Club started in the late 1940s and rose to national prominence, earning several world records, and with the Winnisquam Ski Club, they brought the national championships to Lake Opechee in 1954 and 1959. Another staple of family vacation time was the weekly amateur hour and “Aerial Fireworks Display.” Today there’s been resurgence in interest for getaways where folks can enjoy a slower pace, handson fun, unplug from electronics and rejuvenate simply. The newly refurbished Winnipesaukee Pier, and ongoing traditions of live music, weekly fireworks, lakeside strolls, tasty food, fresh air and water fun draw tourists from across the state and around the world, even capturing the attention of Family Vacation Critic®, naming it one of the nation’s “Ten Best Beaches for Families” in 2017. Driving Miss Daisy…at The Barnstormers The Barnstormers closes its rousing 87th season with the timeless classic, Driving Miss Daisy, on stage Thursday, August 24 through Saturday, September 2. “Driving Miss Daisy has become part of our cultural fabric, in part because of a broad range of themes such as what it’s like to age with dignity and integrity, examining one’s attitudes about race and economic status, the often complicated relationship between an adult child and an aging parent, to name just a few. Miss Daisy and her chauffeur, Hoke, take the audience on a journey through life, and they do it with wit, sass, honesty, friendship and

love,” said the production’s director, Blair Hundertmark. A priceless tale of pride, changing times, and the transformative power of friendship, Driving Miss Daisy is the story of Daisy Werthan, a widowed, well-to-do woman living in mid-century Atlanta, who is deemed too old to drive. When her son hires Hoke, an African-American chauffeur, Daisy’s world is turned upside down. What begins as a troubled pairing, blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all societal boundaries. The Wall Street Journal urged audiences, “Do whatever you have to do to get a ticket.” Driving

Vinette Cotter as Daisy Werthan. Car Provided by Almon Evans. (Diana Evans Photography) Miss Daisy is a lovely reminder of the power of human connection. Returning to The Barnstormers stage to bring Driving Miss Daisy to life are audience favorites Vinette Cotter and Doug Shapiro, along with newcomer Lorenzo Scott who will be making his Barnstormers debut. “We are just thrilled to be bringing such a beautiful show to Tamworth,” said The Barnstormers Artistic Director, Bob Shea. “Driving Miss Daisy is a stunning example of the power of family, friendship, and learning to get along amongst differences, making it

a particularly poignant piece for our time.” The Barnstormers, a 282-seat, professional, Equity theatre founded in 1931, enjoys air conditioning, a hearing assist system and is wheelchair accessible. Performances take place from Tuesday through Saturday evenings with weekend matinees. Beer, wine and lemonade are available during intermission. Friday night is Family Night with special prices. Golf Tournament Promotes Awareness and Raises Money for Starting Point By Ryan Pacheco Starting Point Services for Victims of Domestic & Sexual Violence has operated in the Mount Washington Valley since 1981, and drawn the line between recovery and abuse for countless families. Starting in late August of 2015, the Annual Starting Point Golf Challenge, a soon to be three year running benefit golf tournament for Starting Point, has raised not only funds, but awareness for the organization. (This year’s event will be held on

August 30 at Indian Mound Golf Club in West Ossipee). The tournament is organized by Chris Pacheco, who set out to organize a reunion golf tournament at a local golf club for her downhill ski racing team, The Mountain Meisters, in the winter of 2015. It was soon after that a member of her beloved team passed as the result of a domestic abuse incident. As local news outlets covered the details of the crime, Pacheco, who had achieved success organizing music

festivals in the mid-1990s, began preparing to convert the format of the tournament from a reunion to a charity benefit for Starting Point. “I wanted to do something that could come back every year, and provide awareness of their services, while also sending a message to victims that help is out there,” Pacheco stated. In late August of 2015, the First Annual Starting Point Challenge was held, one-and-a-half months after the idea was conceived. The day was made profitable through the generosity of local businesses, which provided prize donations for the included raffle and silent auction, as well as donating direct cash sponsorships. What originated as one woman’s ambitious stand against the pain she felt the impact of, became a community effort to disable history’s odds of repeating. By the days end, the sixty participating golfers would raise a grand total of $3,000 for Starting Point. Executive Director of Starting Point Raetha Stoddard praised the efforts of the organizers and supporters for providing a platform to spread awareness of the cause, while simultaneously spreading a message to victims, by allowing them a chance to see a community work together in their best interest. With the first event considered an undeniable success, Pacheco began preparation for next year. With a far less restricted timetable, seven months of preparation time was allotted. This resulted in a turnout of 100 participating golfers. The

tournament was able to collect $6,000, doubling the total from the previous year. While the first tournament was restricted to 9 holes of golf, Pacheco was now able to have all 18 holes dedicated for tournament play. Even so, attendance reached its maximum capacity, meaning Pacheco had to turn down would-be players to avoid over-booking. The overwhelming interest, which exceeded capacity, nearly brought a tear to Pacheco’s eye. With the summer of 2017 slowly drawing to a close, the time has once again come for the Third Annual Starting Point Challenge. On August 30, the fairways at Indian Mound Golf Club in West Ossipee will come alive with golfers of all abilities for two consecutive 9-hole scrambles. Lifelong golf buddies, 18-hole a day retirees, scratch golfers (who write in their good scores and scratch out their bad ones) and everyone in between, will come together and enjoy a funfilled, competitive and challenging day of golf, all while raising money and invaluable awareness. The format is a scramble, where each golfer in a group plays off the best ball hit by a team member, so all registering participants will be part of a foursome. The day will start at 3:30 pm for registration and signins, with cocktail hour. At 4:30 pm, a shotgun start will commence the fun, and participants will be treated to complimentary appetizers on the course. The 18th hole is set to feature • Golf Continued on page 9

Monkey Turns Margaritaville For One Night The Flying Monkey Performance Center on Main Street in Plymouth presents a Margaritaville themed night with Mayer-Kirby Mayer Group on Thursday, August 24 at 7:30 pm. Peter Mayer is best known as lead guitarist and songwriting collaborator in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. Singer-songwriters Peter Mayer and Scott Kirby met in 1991 in Key West at the original Margaritaville Café. Peter, fresh from his debut Warner Brothers’ album Piece of Paradise, had come down to

work with Jimmy Buffett. Kirby had recently arrived from New Hampshire to resume to explore the art of songwriting. A long musical collaboration was born. Parrotheads will no doubt know Peter Mayer as the longtime lead guitarist and songwriting collaborator in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band. His distinctive style melds jazz, rock and pop with stunning guitar work and songwriting on a dozen of his own albums. He has shared the stage with everyone from Chicago to Don

Chillin’ While Grillin’ ~ Summer Favorites By Chef Kelly Ross Summertime grilling can turn an ordinary meal into something spectacular. Regardless what your favorite protein is, or your favorite vegetable and some fruits for that matter, grilling can turn it into something delicious. Let’s take that grilled protein and add a great sauce to it, which also is grill inspired, and you can build yourself a meal family and friends will never forget. A fun meal and likely one that all of your carnivore friends will love is a pork and plum combo. The grilled plums will end up in the sauce, which will cover the pork. This is what you will need to make this for four people. - 4-6 boneless pork chops, ideally at least ½ to ¾-in. thick - 4-6 plums, depending on size - 1 tbsp. chopped fresh ginger - 1 tbsp. chopped fresh garlic - ½ Vidalia onion, diced - 2 cups apple sauce - a couple splashes of soy sauce - ½ cup of cream - coarse black pepper, pepper mill ideally - sesame oil - 1-2 bunches of scallions This meal doesn’t take too much time to put together, but the sauce should be done by the time you throw the pork on the grill. For starters, have everything chopped and prepped for the sauce. As for the plums, slice them in one cut in a circle around the plum so you can then twist in half. Remove the pit. In a sauté pan, put a thin layer of sesame oil on the bottom and turn onto a medium heat. Toss in the onions and just before they are translucent, add the garlic, ginger and a few good shakes of black pepper. Toss or stir

s n w o T e h t d n u o Ar

them until the onions are done and you are getting great smells of the garlic and ginger. Add the applesauce and soy sauce. Stir well and once it is starting to steam, turn down to low. Spray your clean grill with a pan release spray, then light it and put it on a medium heat. Once the grill is hot, take the plums and place them flat side down and close the lid and cook for a few minutes. Open the lid and turn the plums. Depending on how ripe the plums are will dictate how long they need to be cooked. You can turn them over again if needed. Ideally, the plums

should be fairly soft but still firm enough to pick up with a set of tongs. Bring the plums to a cutting board and cut each half plum in half and add to the sauce. With a fork, you can slightly mash the plums. It will help to get some of the plum flavor into the sauce, but you still want there to be decent chunks of plum as well. Add the ½ cup of cream, mix well and leave on a slow to medium simmer. Now it’s time to cook the pork. Most people are under the belief that pork needs to be cooked well done. That is not true. Back in the day, it was a valid

point with the threat of trichinosis, but the way meat is inspected and graded nowadays, cooking pork well done is not necessary. In fact, medium is the perfect temperature for pork chops. If you are cooking a pork roast, well done is ok because it has a high fat level content so it will still remain moist, but well done pork chops are generally dry and tough. Season the pork chops with salt and pepper and pop onto a hot grill and close the lid for 4-5 minutes. Flip the pork chops and close the lid for another 3 minutes or so and open the lid and check them out. The thickness of the pork chops will dictate the timing. Ten minutes is likely going to be just about right. Once cooked, place on a platter in a single layer and then ladle the sauce over the pork and top the platter with chopped scallions. Serve with a favorite side dish or two. Your guests are going love this! I know what some of you are thinking if you have been reading my articles. “What about us vegetarians?” Well, I’m here for you too. I’m going to give you a menu of many options. Just like cooking delicious proteins, a make-or-break when cooking veggies often comes down to a great sauce or marinade. The staple to a great vegetarian meal, to me, is a portabella mushroom. A portabella is to most vegetarians like a thick steak is to a carnivore. I know many diehard carnivores that love their veggies as well, and the portabella is so tasty. However, there are many great options, and grilled fruit are some of those options, not just vegetables. Anyway, here are some menu ideas for you. • Grillin’ Continued on page 18

Finding Phil at the Wright Museum The Wright Museum will host the 16th lecture in its Ron Goodgame and Donna Canney 2017 Educational Program Series on Tuesday, August 22, from 7 to 8 pm at the Wright Museum, 77 Center Street, Wolfeboro, NH. Doors for the program open at 6 pm. Finding Phil, Lost in War and Silence will feature an author’s lecture and book signing by Paul Levy. Levy was just a year old when his Uncle Phil was killed in World War II and his family, like many other families,

faced their grief with silence. Upon retirement, and 70 years after his uncle’s death, Levy set out to discover what might still be found about Phil. At every step, research led him to unexpected turns, and ultimately revealed a vivid portrait of Phil’s life and,

flipping occasionally, you will be lucky to end up with 1 ½ cups of caramelized onions!) Ideally, you want them a nice brown color, but not burnt. I keep caramelized onions in my refrigerator quite often. I love them on a steak or a burger. So, as for the portabella, pull off the stem (set aside and use on your K-Bob) and marinate the caps in Balsamic vinegar for about 15-20 minutes. Put them on the grill, cup side down, and cook for a few minutes. Once you flip them so the cup side is up, put some warm caramelized onions in the cup and top with some crumbled bleu cheese and close the lid for a couple of minutes. Lift the lid and the cheese should be good and melted by now. Check the firmness of the mushroom so you get it to your liking. Some like them firm and some like them mushy. (I like them fairly firm with a touch of give to them.) If you are not just a vegetarian but also a vegan, just skip

-Grilled portabella, marinated in Balsamic vinegar and filled with caramelized onions and topped with crumble bleu cheese -Grilled corn on the cob in the husk -Italian herbed zucchini and summer squash -Fire roasted peppers -Mini K-Bobs -Grilled Pineapple, apples, peaches and plums The only thing on this list of ideas that you can’t cook on the grill is the caramelized onion. These can be done a day in advance if you prefer, as they are time consuming, although simple to make. (One thing that amuses me about caramelizing onions is the shrinkage factor. Once you slice 3 onions and put them in a sauté pan, the pan is somewhat overflowing. Once you add some oil and cook for about an hour on low/medium heat, stirring and

astoundingly, of his death. In the process, Levy also gained insights into war, anti-Semitism, family silences, and heroism. He also encountered intriguing and sometimes famous characters that had touched Phil’s life. Paul Levy and his wife, Elizabeth,

are retired and live in Concord, NH. Paul had careers as a poverty lawyer, social worker, and professor of human services. Currently, he is active in social justice issues and is a frequent contributor to the Concord Monitor. Admission is $8.00 per person, by cash or check. Wright Museum members are admitted for free. the cheese and you are all set. As for the corn, many of you have a likely done this. Soak your corn, still in the husk, in cold water for an hour or two. Cook for 15 minutes or so on lower shelf, 20+ on the top shelf. Ideally you want the husk burnt pretty well. It’s amazing how the corn will hold the heat within the husk so don’t try to peel the husk off right away as you might burn yourself. The corn will continue to steam within the husk for a few minutes. I could eat these every day. Roasted peppers are so good. I strongly suggest you use the reds, yellows and orange peppers mainly because they are so much sweeter than green peppers. Just pop them on the grill and move them around and turn them every few minutes. You want some black char on them, but not completely covered. Once the peppers are done, you now have to peel off most of the black or you will have specks of black all over your teeth. I put the peppers in running cold water, as this will help the peeling process. You are ok to have some black on them, but anything that peels off is good to get rid of. Once done, slice in half and get the seeds out of there. Pop them back on the grill for a minute or so to get the heat back into them. When it comes to the zucchini and summer squash, cut off the ends and slice lengthwise to your desired thickness. On a cookie sheet, pour some olive or vegetable oil with some oregano, basil, granulated garlic and salt and pepper. Lay the veggies on the pan and move them around with a set of tongs and flip them and repeat. Have some rough cut fresh basil set aside.

When you grill the veggies, beware, as you will get some extra flame due to the oil on them. The flame will help get some great flavor. These will not take long to cook. Once they are done, top with the fresh basil and serve. Mini K-Bobs are simple and basic and likely something everyone has done before. May I suggest using the stem from the portabella on it? I like onions; multi colored peppers, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes and usually marinade the K-Bobs for a couple hours in a basic Italian Dressing. The dressing gives a nice flavor and also helps create some flame to the veggies. As for the fruit, it’s all simple and so good. As for the pineapple, slice the skin off it, core the middle, and slice into ¾ inch circles. I suggest teriyaki brushed on this while cooking. For the apple, cut in half and then each half in half, giving you 4 wedges. Cut out the core. Grill on each side until it starts to soften. Once cooked, drizzle lightly with a cinnamon butter. Just melt some butter and add the cinnamon to your desired liking. As we did with the plums in the pork dish, do the same thing here with the peaches and plums. Personally, I don’t think they need any help with a sauce. They are great as they are. Slice in a circle, pull in half, remove the pit and grill. I know all the fruit can work as part of the meal or as dessert. My suggestion would be to scoop some vanilla ice cream over the peaches and plums as they come right off the grill. It doesn’t get much better than that. I hope you will give some of these recipes and ideas a try. Until next time, continue to be Chillin’ While Grillin’.

often visible climbing up and over trees and branches. This plant can be identified by its bluntly toothed leaves, five-petaled yellowish-white flowers, and mature orange-yellow fruit. The species was introduced from overseas as an ornamental garden plant, but it escaped from landscaped gardens and now is found throughout the state where it can strangle trees and spread through open forests. It becomes difficult to manage if left alone. Invasive species like the Oriental Bittersweet can cost the country billions of dollars per year due to losses in agricultural crops. There are generally four methods of removing and controlling this harmful species from taking over the forest. They are mechanical, cultural, chemical, and biological. Mechanical refers to hand pulling, mowing, and cutting. Cultural methods involve natural succession or human intervention to manipulate the environment in which the invasive plant is growing by manipulating soil pH, soil moisture, sun light and so on. Chemical control involves the use of herbicides, while biological control uses other organisms to naturally reduce the number of invasive species. Each person has an opportunity to act now. By being aware of the problem,

learning how to recognize and report unwanted plants, and removing them from an area by their roots, you can stop invasive plants from destroying native species as well as protect the wetlands, grasslands, and wildlife that live there. In an effort to protect New Hampshire’s habitats, the Invasive Plant Atlas of New Hampshire has come up with an action plan. More information about this group’s strategy may be found at the following link: http:// invasivespecies.gov/council/actionc. shtml or by contacting the New Hampshire department of Agriculture at www.agriculture.nh.gov. To learn more about these events, please visit www.nhnature.org or call to register 603-968-7194 option 7. The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, an informal public garden, and lake cruises, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors since 1966 about the importance of our natural world. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness, an easy drive from exit 24 off I-93, and is open daily from May 1 through November 1. The Science Center is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is the only AZA-accredited institution in all of northern New England. For further information about the Science Center, call 603-968-7194 or visit www.nhnature.org.

On Friday, August 25, Great Waters Music Festival will present Barbra & Frank – The Concert That Never Was. The performance will be at the Kingswood Arts Center in Wolfeboro and starts at 7:30 pm. Streisand and Sinatra never shared the same stage…until now! Barbra & Frank, The Concert That Never Was, stars Sharon Owens and Sebastian Anzaldo. Whether fans are reliving memories through the songs they’ve loved for years, or are experiencing Streisand and Sinatra’s music for the first time, this “must see” show captures the imagination and brings to life the spirit of two of the most beloved legends ever to grace a stage. Barbra and Frank together at last.... experience what could have been! Sharon Owens has turned to television where she was crowned the winner of the hit TV show on Fox called “Performing As…” Her national success has created a whirlwind of Barbra fans waiting to see Sharon’s famous tribute. She has been performing her “Tribute to Barbra Streisand” to critical acclaim nationwide in major showrooms, for corporate events and as a headliner in Las Vegas. She graced one of the finest stages in Europe, in Berlin, Germany, “Stars in Concert”. She also appeared in “Legends in Concert” at the Bally’s Hotel and Casino, Atlantic City. Sebastian Anzaldo is fast becoming one of the top “Sinatra” interpreters in the country. With the voice, looks and mannerisms of ’Ol Blue Eyes,

Sebastian has wowed audiences from coast to coast. Originally hailing from Omaha, Sebastian grew up in a musical family (his father was a sax player and later a talent agent, his mother a singer). He started playing drums and singing at age 11, and began his professional career working with bands in bars and at frat parties soon after that. Sebastian’s passion for jazz led him to New York, compliments of The National Endowment For The Arts. The next year, he headed to the opposite coast to make his fame and fortune. It was around this time that he discovered his ‘knack for doing Frank’, and began incorporating it into the shows with his band “Wild Life”. As word got out that there was a new ‘Chairman’ in town, he got a call to star in ‘The Tribute To The Rat Pack’ currently running at The Greek Isle. This in turn led to his current show – headlining with Sharon Owens as Barbra Streisand in the wonderful “Barbra & Frank, The Concert That Never Was…” at the Riviera. The performance is sponsored by Fidelity Investments, TD Bank, Baker Newman Noyes CPA, WMWV and Ballentine Partners. The Great Waters Music Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing outstanding musical performances to people living in and visiting the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Information and tickets for all performances are available at the office at 54 North Main Street in Wolfeboro, by calling 603-569-7710, or online at www.greatwaters.org.

Outstanding NH Women ~ The Peaceful Life of Eldress Bertha Lindsay By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper She looked like everyone’s gentle, sweet grandmother. With her white cap, calico apron, sturdy lace-up shoes and cozy sweaters, Bertha Lindsay was someone you could picture making apple pies and handing out cookies to the neighborhood children. But Bertha Lindsay – Eldress Bertha – was so much more than a grandmotherly type, although she saw to it that many people were fed and housed over her long life. By the time she passed away, in 1990, she was in her 90s and had lived a majority of her life at Canterbury Shaker Village in Canterbury, NH. She wore the title of Eldress with modesty, and probably was a bit baffled how she had ended up overseeing the community of Shakers, although she understood it was partially because the population of her fellow Brothers and Sisters in the religion had dwindled to a small number. She was a logical candidate to oversee the operation of the Shakers. There are many things that make Eldress Bertha an outstanding New Hampshire woman, but first and foremost, it was her compassion and gentle kindness and ability to lead by example. Her work included everything from cooking, gardening, and even coauthoring a cookbook of her many recipes, (among them the unusual and popular Rose Water Apple Pie) to spearheading the effort to create a

According to Mary Rose Boswell, who co-authored the cookbook “Seasoned with Grace My Generation of Shaker Cooking”, Bertha’s “entire life revolved around serving and representing her community as a cook, and although her eyesight was drastically impaired in 1982,” Bertha continued her work. Boswell writes of sitting down to a tasty meal, prepared by Eldress Bertha, at Canterbury Shaker Village. Dining with Bertha and Mary Rose Boswell was Gertrude Soule, one of the last remaining Shakers. The meal

started with Tomato Rice Soup from a recipe Bertha had learned over 60 years before. Vegetables were baked for the next course as Bertha had been taught as a teen by the older Shaker sisters. (The Shakers believed that a meal should look pleasing, as well as

taste good; the colors and textures were important too.) Bertha was taught to cook by the Shaker sisters, and she was raised at the Canterbury Shaker Village from a young age. Goldie Ina Ruby Lindsay (later to be renamed into the Shaker religion as Bertha), was born in Massachusetts in 1897, and her family moved to Laconia, New Hampshire soon after. Her father set up a store in the town and it was frequented by the Canterbury Shakers. The Lindsays and the Canterbury Shakers thus knew one another, and likely Mr. Lindsay was impressed with the philosophy and talents of the group. He also must have been aware the Shakers often took in orphans and other children in need, serving as surrogate mothers and fathers to parentless youngsters. It is said that little Goldie was not happy with the decision to send her to the Shakers after her parents died. She cried and made quite a scene, but one of the loving Canterbury Sisters

Page 28 • Outstanding Women Continued on page 27 embraced her, explaining that she had waited so long for Goldie to arrive. This sister, among others, provided love, guidance and companionship for little Goldie. Her childhood, by all accounts, was a happy one among the Shakers at Canterbury. The loving lessons stuck, and Goldie, taking the spiritual name of Bertha, signed the Covenant to be a Shaker when she was of age. Old photographs in “Seasoned with Grace” show Bertha with other Shakers, apple picking, picnicking, riding in a wagon, celebrating the Fourth of July, and generally making work look like fun. She said, later in her life as she recorded her remembrances, “I want people to know we did have fun and plenty of it.” Indeed, Bertha put a lot of effort into making sure the history and lives of the Shakers at Canterbury were remembered. Shaker education was

August 21, 2017 good and it would seem, forward thinking. According to Bertha, “out of school, we were permitted to take any studies we wanted. I took up astronomy, and I loved that.” She also studied elocution and was the star of the plays put on at the village. It was important to Bertha that people not view the Shakers as an oddity. Although once shy, she overcame her reticence for the spotlight in order to leave a record of what the Canterbury Shakers were really like. She was, for example, proud that the Shakers invented the washing machine, the broom and even clothespins! Always interested in making work more efficient, and endlessly curious, the Shakers embraced technology, and were among the first to purchase an automobile and when the radio came into being, they were delighted. By the age of about 10, Bertha was taught to make potatoes in a variety of ways; the Shaker cooks felt this was a good, easy way for girls to be introduced to kitchen work and food

preparation. Bertha’s skills must have set her apart, because by her teens, she was making a lot of food and later, became head chef for the dining hall where visitors and workers from the outside world were fed. Bertha was also a skilled poplar box maker and her work was sold to an eager public. By 1926, according to information provided by Canterbury Shaker Village, Bertha worked with Sister Rebecca Hathaway in the canning of jams, jellies, pickles and relishes. Although the population of the village continued to decline, there were still a number of mouths to feed, and Bertha was a great help. As the outside world continued to creep into Canterbury Shaker Village, Bertha knew her fellow Shakers could meet the reality with open arms and use the opportunity for the positive, or they could retreat. She, among others, chose to open the doors of the village to the curious public. Although the Shakers had always welcomed visitors, making them “kindly welcome” they were a family going about their day to day lives, worshipping and finding a variety of ways to earn a living. Bertha was aware the public loved handmade Shaker items, and that the public was curious about the Shakers. She was instrumental in the formation of a museum at Canterbury Shaker Village. It was a time of change by the 1950s and 1960s. When tours of the village were offered, guides were hired from the outside world. One guide, June Sprigg, was a college student when she spent her first summer at the Village, working as a guide. She lived at Canterbury Shaker Village and dined

daily with Bertha, Gertrude and other remaining Shaker sisters. She later wrote a book, “Simple Gifts,” sharing her experiences and her love of Bertha and the other Shakers. In that book, Bertha’s sense of humor and wit, and her loving kindness, shine through. Sprigg describes some of the meals Bertha prepared, and the personality of the Eldress. (For example, even when her patience was tested, it seems Bertha stuck to her Shaker teachings and beliefs and kept her own council rather than calling anyone out.) Bertha once wrote, “Shakers are never permitted to dislike anybody or cast them aside.” Although her eyesight failed in later years, Bertha continued to spread the word in her own way, about the history of the Canterbury Shakers and the religious sect (at one time there were a number of other Shaker villages and a large population). In 1967, Bertha was appointed Canterbury Eldress and a member of the Lead Ministry. She helped with the decision to convey the deed of the Canterbury properties to Shaker Village, Inc. a nonprofit educational institution. She wanted the site to be preserved so that others might visit, learn about the Shakers and find peace and joy, as she had done all her life, among the fields and buildings of the village. Indeed, if one wanders through the beautiful old Canterbury Shaker Village buildings, the spirit and love of • Outstanding Women Continued on page 29

Strafford Wind Symphony returns to bandstand The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand welcome the Strafford Wind Symphony back to Cate Park on Saturday, August 26, for the next show in the free summer concert series. The group returns to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee and is set to delight the crowd with patriotic numbers as well as a mix of traditional music for wind ensemble. The Symphony is a 55-member group that meets weekly to rehearse in Rochester. The group includes musicians from all walks of life, and members travel from Maine, Massachusetts and New Hampshire to share their passion for music. The group has performed numerous times at the Boston Festival of

Bands, held annually at Faneuil Hall Marketplace each June, and is also a big supporter of National Music in our Schools Month, where the group performs concerts that are specifically geared toward young musicianship and often open up the stage to share with young musicians. In that same vein, the ensemble also opens its membership to talented high school students who want to broaden their musical horizons. The band’s conductor and music director is Bruce Gatchell. He started as the assistant conductor in 1999 and became the music director in 2013. He has taught music in Rochester, Epping and Concord public schools and also taught at Plymouth State University. He also has served for almost three decades

their religion, race, status in life or education, to her table. Indeed, the title of her cookbook, “Seasoned with Grace” is also the story of Bertha’s long, productive life. Eldress Bertha Lindsay passed away at age 93 in 1990, but her mission to bring the outside world to Canterbury Shaker Village and to make all welcome, lives on. the Shakers can be felt. It is a peaceful place and one that remarkable Bertha Lindsay helped to preserve. The Canterbury Shaker Village gift shop carries Bertha’s cookbook, which is really part recipe book, and part history, with reminiscences and historical photographs. Little Goldie Ina, a frightened orphan who arrived at Canterbury Shaker Village full of grief and confusion, was raised with gentle kindness and taught skills that stayed with her for a lifetime. She welcomed all, no matter

Now retired, he continues as music director for the Leddy Center for the Performing Arts Broadway musical productions. The Strafford Wind Symphony’s assistant conductor is Jeffrey Smith. He taught in Norwalk, Conn. public schools for 35 years and also taught at Western Connecticut State University. He also plays many Wednesday nights in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand as part of the Cate Park Band. He regularly guest conducts on the middle and high school levels and is an active music arranger and marching band drill and visual designer. The ensemble members believe in the power of music and share their commitment to music with the audiences they perform for each and every concert. The Strafford Wind Symphony

will be taking to the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee in the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand on Saturday, August 26. The Friends of the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand are committed to bringing quality music to Cate Park each and every Saturday night in July and August, with concerts beginning at 7 pm each evening and featuring a wide variety of musical acts. While the concerts are free, volunteers will “pass the buckets” during intermission to help raise funds to support the concert series, which continues to provide great entertainment at the Wolfeboro Community Bandstand. If bad weather threatens, a sign announcing the concert’s cancellation will be hung at the entrance to the park near the bandstand and that information will also be posted at wolfeborobandstand.org.

Margery Mueller at the Red Dot Gallery New Hampshire artist Margery Thomas-Mueller will open an exhibit of her new work on Saturday, August 26 from 5 to 7 pm at the Red Dot, an alternate space in Alton. Mueller’s work is large (108 x 36 in.), dramatic and packed with emotion. Her landscapes are metaphors for life in today’s tumultuous world and for our efforts to discover our dreams. Working in ink on Yupo paper, an industrial plastic that lacks absorbency, the artist continues the metaphor. The paintings are strong and poignant. The public is invited to a reception to meet the artist at the Red Dot, 74 Drew Hill Road, Alton, NH 03809. Patricia Ladd Carega Gallery joins the Red Dot in presenting this exhibit. For more information visit www. patricialaddcarega.com or www. margerythomasmueller.net. Influenced by Hieronymus Bosch,

Gustav Klimt, and Giacometti, weightless and often faceless souls process through the thickets and branches of Mueller’s forests. The figures represent the artist’s reactions to current global issues that fill the pages and screens of our lives today. Mueller’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes need to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Standing in front of her work, the viewer is drawn deeper and deeper into Mueller’s world. One feels the intensity of both the work and the artist’s message. Margery Thomas Mueller studied art at Carnegie Mellon, the Art Students League in New York and the Academia delle Belle Arti. She worked as an interior designer for over 40 years and now is a full time artist. Her work is found in numerous private collections. The exhibit at the Red Dot alternate space will be up through September

It’s Time for the 38th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival Sometimes you just know when you see quality. You sense it when you see a beautiful painting. You know it when you watch a skilled craftsperson creating a quality, handmade item. The Lakes Region Fine Arts and Crafts Festival has been featuring such high-quality items for years and in the upcoming event, will be celebrating its 38th Annual craft event in Meredith. On Saturday and Sunday, August 26 and 27, the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Meredith Village Savings Bank, will present the 38th Annual Lakes Region Fine Arts and Crafts Festival. This event, which will be held from 9 am to 5 pm both days, will transform the Main Street of the quaint lakeside village of Meredith, as well as the upper parking lot of the Mill Falls Marketplace, into an outdoor art gallery featuring the works of more than 80 painters, sculptors, jewelers, potters, photographers, and quilters. Spectators will be impressed with the variety and quality of exhibits the

Festival has to offer. Booths will offer a wide variety of fine handmade items, from wildlife photography, metal and wood sculptures, stained glass, handmade jewelry, baskets, leather projects, to abstract and traditional oil paintings, and watercolors. All items are original creations and the artists and craftsmen will be available throughout the weekend to meet and converse with customers. Over the years, the Festival has gained a solid reputation among New England artists and craftsmen and is the largest quality arts and crafts event in the area. Live music will fill the air for those walking through the Festival. Performing at this year’s event on both Saturday and Sunday will be Marc Elbaum and Christine Chaisson, who will play jazz, classic rock and great American songs from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. At 11 am on Saturday, Simplicity The Clown will entertain younger fairgoers, as well as adults with comedy magic and balloon entertainment. The

afternoon entertainment will feature a variety of folk music and classic rock Phil and Janet Sanguedolce, Jarrod Taylor, and Ray Porcell. Culinary delights and tasty treats will be available and will include the popular sausage sandwiches, hot dogs, soda, homemade pies, and ice cream, and sno cones. Free shuttle bus service

courtesy of the Lakes Region Airport Shuttle will be available from both the north and south sides of Route 3 and will run continuously both days. Admission is free; for detailed information contact the Meredith Area Chamber of Commerce at 603-2796121.

8th Annual Run Your Buns Off When is the last time you ran your buns off? This Labor Day weekend, you can! On Saturday, September 2 at 9 am, runners and walkers will leave from Basic Ingredients Bakery located on Rt. 3A in Bristol to “run their buns off” for a 4.2 mile professionally timed run/walk. The reward for your hard work…a homemade sticky bun will be waiting for you at the finish line! Hosted by the Newfound Area Charitable Fund, the Run Your Buns Off race committee announces that two charitable organizations were selected, through an application process by the NACF board, as this year’s beneficiaries. The Tapply Thompson Community Center (TTCC), located in Bristol, has been serving thousands of area youth since 1946 with yearround after school, summer and sports programming. The TTCC’s Teen Council is raising funds for a gymnasium renovation project and the board wants to be sure they reach their goal so it can be ready for decades of future use. The second beneficiary is the Day Away program, which also serves the Newfound region by providing respite for caregivers of eligible individuals through a social day care program. “This year we are honored and excited to be able to assist both the young and the not-soyoung in our communities through our beneficiary selections,” says Garlyn Manganiello, NACF vice-president and co-founder of the race. “The NACF Board is dedicated

to assisting local charitable groups and causes which promote wellness, fitness and health education, as well as activities in the Newfound region,” says Audrey Goudie, NACF President. “Each year we select one or more local charities, which exemplify these goals as the race’s beneficiary. Goudie continues, “Since the first Run Your Buns Off road race in 2010, we have given back over $51,000 to worthy causes and programs in our community and that makes us very proud.” Individual runners, walkers and teams of all ages are encouraged to participate. The top three male and female runners, as well as the fastest team will be awarded prizes and everyone has a chance to win at the huge raffle filled with goodies, including a paddleboard, donated by local businesses and beyond. Do your part to help support two great local causes all the while indulging in a delicious treat, having fun with family and friends and getting some exercise on Labor Day weekend! The cost is $22 per runner/walker, until day of race when the price is $25. You can register for the Run Your Buns Off 4.2 Miler at www.lightboxreg.com/buns_2017. For more information on becoming a sponsor or for registration questions, please email runyourbunsoff@gmail. com and you can always stop by Basic Ingredients bakery and register in person.

Strengthen Your Body and Soul with Outdoor Yoga By Sarah Wright The Lakes Region is a haven for nature lovers. With so many options to get outdoors, residents and visitors to the area can hike, run, or walk one of many trails; kayak, swim, or paddleboard at one of the area’s beautiful lakes; or just find a spot to relax and picnic or bird watch. When the warm weather hits, lots of people take their exercise routines outside, and fitness studios are following suit. One of the best ways to strengthen your body and connect with nature is to take an outdoor yoga class. Enjoy a class from a local yoga studio, and feel yourself soak in the elements. Here are some options. Katie O’Connell from Dragonfly Yoga & Ayurveda in North Sandwich has been teaching yoga for over 14 years, specializing in Ayurveda, which focuses on the elements. So naturally, being outside enhances the experience. “Outdoor yoga gives students a chance to interact with their environment, connecting the outer world with their bodies,” says Katie. “When I talk about the elements, they can actually feel it— the cool water, the sunshine on their backs—it makes the experience

richer.” “Katie’s outdoor yoga classes are a blend of flow yoga and Hatha poses, focusing on balance and bringing peace to the mind and body. She teaches a class at the Sandwich Town Beach on Squam Lake Road, Tuesday mornings at 8 am for $8; just bring a towel and a water bottle. (Katie has a few parking passes for out-of-town class participants.) The beach class usually runs until sometime in September. She also leads a yoga/meditation hike up West Rattlesnake Mountain in Holderness on Sundays throughout the summer, weather permitting. Participants meet in the parking lot on Route 113 at 8:20 am for the 8:30 hike. “We walk up to the top in quiet, taking full, deep breaths of the outside air,” says Katie, “At the top, we have yoga class with standing postures, because the ground is uneven. The class is open-ended, so afterwards, everyone is free to relax for a while or picnic, and head back down at their leisure.” Dragonfly Yoga & Ayurveda is located at 280 Bennett Street in North Sandwich. You could also connect with the past through yoga poses at a scenic and historic barn. Bill Donahue is the founder of the Scriven Arts Colony in Gilmanton, launched in 2015 to host cultural events. These events include yoga classes, held in a (circa) 1790 barn attached to

an old white farmhouse that Bill’s ancestors bought in 1905. “The barn was standing on the property in 1796,” says Bill. “It’s likely older than that, but no prior records exist. The barn sits atop a foundation of stones that were gathered from nearby and likely rolled into position.” Bill adds with a smile, “The floor tilts to the south, but this doesn’t hinder yoga classes.” Jade Badger teaches yoga at the barn, and has been practicing yoga • Yoga Continued on page 38

for 17 years. Her classes integrate Hatha and Vinyassa Flow as they focus on deepening the connection between mind, body, and breath. “I hope my class will bring together yogis of all abilities,” says Jade. The yoga class at the barn is free every Saturday at 8 am. If you have a yoga mat and props, please

bring them; there is a small batch of mats and props on hand for people who don’t have any. Donations are encouraged, but not required. The Scriven Arts Colony is located at 452 Route 140 in Gilmanton. Coming up at the end of August, Jade will be teaching an outdoor class on the water in Meredith. Castle in the Clouds in Moultonboro offers yoga outside on the lawn during their summer Wellness Wednesdays at 6 pm every Wednesday until August 30. Sponsored by Huggins Hospital, the Wellness Wednesday series aims to encourage people to take an active role in their physical, mental, and emotional health. Take in the breathtaking view of the lakes and mountains as you do your yoga poses. (In the event of inclement weather, the class is held on the second floor of the Carriage House.) This year’s yoga instructor is Shelby York, who is affiliated with Yoga 4 Life out of Wolfeboro. Programs and Volunteer Coordinator Stephanie Poole says, “With the view, gentle breeze, and relaxing yoga session, I can’t think of a better way to wind down at the end of the day.” Walk-ins are welcome, but you can also register in advance by calling Stephanie at 603-476-5410 or by using the online system at www.castleintheclouds. org.
