Test Your New Hampshire Trivia Knowledge By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper You might have seen her at any one of the Joyce’s Craft Shows taking place in the Lakes Region and beyond in the summer and fall. Joyce Endee has been producing craft shows for years, some indoors and others under big tents in outdoor areas. Organizing the well-attended fairs is a lot of work and Joyce explains that she begins planning and public relations efforts for the shows in the early winter. “I have 14 fairs on the schedule and it keeps me busy year round. Most are two-day shows,” she says. Although this story is not about her craft fairs, they are nevertheless part of the path that led Joyce to her latest venture – a trivia book about New Hampshire. With a teaching background, Joyce was a professor at a community college in Nashua, New Hampshire with an emphasis on English and business. After her three children were born, Joyce found it more difficult to get the teaching job she desired. After Joyce and her husband Charlie and their children moved to Gilford, New Hampshire in the early 1990s, she “ended up in the craft fair business.” Many of her vendors sell their creations in all of her fairs, from Wolfeboro to North Conway to the Laconia area and Tilton, as well as southern New Hampshire, which attests to the popularity and success of the shows. Over the years Charlie handled the computer work that was necessary to
produce the shows, but in recent years that has changed. After Charlie was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, he was unable to carry out his previous duties and eventually had to enter a local nursing home for skilled care. Joyce visits him every day for lunch, but not having her lifetime partner at home certainly left a huge hole in her life. Although busy, she wanted to find a way to fill in some of her down time and maybe create additional income so her husband could receive at-home care in the future. The answer - writing a book - made a lot of sense because Joyce has a background in English and she is very organized. If one attends a Joyce’s Craft Show, it is obvious the woman at the helm is a go-getter and isn’t afraid of hard work. And she is willing to try something new if it interests her. Joyce smiles as she says, “I doubt if I will ever retire. I like to keep busy.” And “keep busy” she has, by writing a book called “501 New Hampshire Trivia Questions & Photos.” The book is currently available on Kindle. (Joyce hopes to have a printed book version out in the near future.) “I started researching the book in 2014,” Joyce explains. “I still love to teach, although my job is an event presenter of craft shows. The book is a fun way to educate people. And because it is history-oriented, I learned while doing the research.” Joyce also wrote the book to supplement her income because the craft business tends to be seasonal,
SPRING FEVER SALE! —IN ALL THREE LOCATIONS—
although it keeps her busy nearly year round with pre-planning for the following year. “I researched a lot and it took me about four years to complete,” Joyce adds. Part of that research was talking to New Hampshire people about specific areas of interest that could become a trivia question/answer. For example, Joyce talked with the folks at the Mount Washington Weather Observatory to learn how they keep track of weather with instrumentation. It was a great learning experience and definitely got Joyce thinking about something new and interesting. The trivia questions in the book “start out easy and then become more challenging as the book progresses,” she explains. Accuracy was very important to Joyce when writing the book and she worked hard to vary the trivia questions so that it was family oriented and every age could play. (An easy question, for example, was ‘What is the state flower?’ The answers to the questions follow on the next page; questions get more difficult as the book progresses.) Information from Joyce at the beginning of the book explains, “This book contains 501 questions and photos based on New Hampshire’s history of people, events, and places. You will have fun individually or on teams as you answer the numerous, educational multiple choice questions. You will learn about New Hampshire and delight in its history and heritage as you read and answer the various
questions on history, art, literature, science, sports, geography, animals, government and New Hampshire’s famous people and events. You will enjoy the fun of playing a trivia game and will learn a great deal about the awesome State of New Hampshire. The questions are meant to be educational and interesting. Play by yourself or with others.” All that work delving into New Hampshire’s many aspects meant the book was not just a few pages; indeed it turned out to be quite lengthy. “I researched over 1,000 questions and the book ended up being 253 pages in length,” Joyce says. “I worked on it • Trivia Continued on page 4

Page 4 | THE LAKER | May 27, 2019 • Trivia Continued from page 3 year round.” Perhaps immersing herself in the book and doing all that research was a very good thing for Joyce because it filled in the times when she wasn’t working. She also learned a great deal about New Hampshire, from history to the state’s geography to its people and much, much more. “I have always loved New Hampshire and the Lakes Region in particular. And I have always loved the history of the lakes and mountains, so this project was a natural for me.” Charlie also loves the book and is very proud of Joyce’s efforts. She included her whole family in the project and credits, in the book, her daughter Victoria in particular who helped with the graphics. In the book she writes, “I especially want to thank my wonderful daughter, Victoria, who was extremely instrumental with the necessary computer expertise for the book’s layout and publication. Without exaggeration, I could not have finished it without her.” Along with the many trivia questions, Joyce has added some colorful photos to give a complete picture of the state,
such as a shot of the Old Country Store in Moultonboro and a photo of the M/S Mount Washington on the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee. The grandeur and splendor of the state’s many regions draw the reader in. If you have not visited each area of the state, the book will make you want to get in your car and head to the White Mountains, the seacoast and other areas of the state. “I still love to teach,” she reflects. “The book is fun, and it teaches a lot to readers, which fulfills my desire to continue to be an educator.” It is hoped that Joyce will eventually create enough additional income from the book to provide at-home care for Charlie, something that is very important to her. With a summer and autumn season full of fairs, plus getting the book printed, the future will be busy for Joyce. Because she “likes to keep busy” and has no plans to retire, her schedule, it seems, is just the way she likes it. Castle in the Clouds is open with variety of happenings The 13-year old non-profit Castle Preservation Society, which is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and sharing the iconic Castle in the Clouds property, recently welcomed the public back for another season. The Castle is now open daily from 10 am to 5:30 pm, through October 27. Castle in the Clouds, located in Moultonboro, was added to the National Register of Historic Places with national significance in 2018 and offers mansion tours, dining, programs and events, on-site riding stables, and more, plus access to 28 miles of hiking trails managed by the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. The Castle has many special programs and events planned for the season, including an overnight Family Camp Out, “Castle Close-Up” specialty tours focused on architecture, technology and furnishings, guided walks of the Brook Walk trail, NH Humanities lectures on music history and cellar holes, and returning favorites such as Castle After Hours, Solar Gazing, Yoga on the Castle lawn, Family Fun Day, and Open Air Landscape Art. The popular Castle Car Show is returning to the field by Shannon Pond on Saturday, July 6 from 10 am to 2 pm, with a collection of automobiles from the turn of the 20th century to the present day. Programs and events aren’t all that’s new this year - the on-site Carriage House Restaurant is starting a season of lake-view dining, music nights, and lunch in the historic stables with a new menu, retaining visitor favorites like the Tom Foolery sandwich and Downeast lobster roll. The gift shop has received improved
flooring, along with all-new made in New England items like vintage children’s games, a signature candle and custom Castle products like roundel earrings and a scarf made with the Lucknow Pines wallpaper design. Additionally, the gable-end of the Castle library has a refreshed stone façade after undergoing spring restoration. “To prevent interior water damage, masons re-pointed the stones that make up this end’s exterior façade, which involves documenting and removing each stone and re-installing it in its original position with new mortar,” explains Curator, Robin Sherman. “The timber rafter tails and exterior framing around the windows that have decayed over the years were also restored.” In addition to tours of the main two floors of the mansion, visitors can enjoy a full season of guided basement tours, learning about the Castle’s unique construction, advanced technology for its time, and the lives of its estate staff. Basement tours take place daily at 11 am, 1 and 2:30 pm; tickets are available online in

On the evening of Thursday, May 30, historian David Warren will kick off the 2019 Lakes Congress in Meredith, New Hampshire, with the fascinating presentation “Steam over ‘Winnepiseogee’.” Attendees will learn how the railroads and their steamboats transformed the Lakes Region into the Mecca for tourists, vacationers, and summer residents it is today. No other development in our history has had a greater impact on our economy and culture. This presentation is open to the public—the ticket cost is $5 per person and pre-registration is required. The 2019 Lakes Congress, presented by the Grappone Automotive Group and hosted by NH LAKES, will be held on the evening of Thursday, May 30, and all-day on Friday, May 31, at Church Landing at Mill Falls in Meredith. Approximately 200 lake enthusiasts, natural resource professionals, and state agency staff, legislative representatives, municipal officials, and business leaders are expected to gather for the 26th annual education, training, and networking event. On Friday, May 31, Eric Eckl, nationally renowned communications expert for water conservation, will present “Voices of the Land” as the
keynote address of the Lakes Congress. In this inspiring keynote, attendees will learn what it takes for local grassroots efforts to succeed in getting conservation practices implemented on the ground to protect our waters, including our lakes. “There’s so much we can all do to help keep New Hampshire’s 1,000 lakes clean and healthy,” commented Andrea LaMoreaux, NH LAKES vice president. “Our goal is to not only inspire but provide each person who comes to Lakes Congress with training and information they can bring to their own communities.” On Friday, after the keynote address, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of workshop sessions addressing topics which will include the state of lake advocacy in New Hampshire; identifying and managing aquatic invasive species in lakes; working with local land trusts to conserve lakes and lake-friendly living. This event is open to the public. To learn more about the 2019 Lakes Congress and to register, visit www. nhlakes.org/lakes-congress. Birding in the Springtime Are you curious to learn about the birds you see in your backyard? Have you caught a fleeting glimpse of a bird flitting from tree to tree? Have you heard beautiful bird songs but don’t know what kind of birds make them? Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and Squam Lakes Conservation Society are collaborating to answer these questions with a series of beginning bird identification programs called Spring Birding. Under the guidance of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center Executive Director Iain MacLeod, participants will seek out the huge variety of birds that fill the woods, meadows, and
wetlands each spring. Participants will explore a variety of habitats in the Lakes Region looking for birds while learning identification by sight and sound. Spring Birding will take place on Friday, May 31, and June 7 from 7 to 10 am, and is geared for adults and youth age 14 and older. Participants may come to one or all sessions. The cost is $12 per session for members of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center or Squam Lakes Conservation Society and $15 for others. Advance registration is requested and available online at nhnature.org or by calling 603-968-7194 x 7.

Nuno Felt Workshop at Meredith League The League of NH Craftsmen Meredith Fine Craft Gallery is offering a Nuno Felted Scarf Class with Leaguejuried fiber artist, Melinda LaBarge, on Saturday, June 1 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm at the Meredith Community Center. If you have never felted before or if you are looking to take your skills to the next level, this class is for you. Melinda will meet students at their skill level and work with them individually. No felting experience is necessary. Nuno is the Japanese word for cloth and the technique bonds loose fibers, such as hand-dyed silk, merino roving, silk roving, printed silk materials, and other dyed locks onto a sheer silk fabric. The use of floral silks in unique color palettes produces a handmade product reminiscent of Impressionist paintings. There will be an abundance of materials available to choose from to create your own special scarf, in whatever design and color you wish to make. Additional materials will be
available for sale, if you want to make more than one scarf. Students are encouraged to bring a lunch or snack to satisfy themselves through the six-hour class. Participants should bring the following materials and tools to class: three to four old bath towels, plastic bag for wet towels, scissors, pen and paper to take notes, camera (optional) to document the process, rubber mat (optional) to stand on, and comfortable shoes. Please note that this class will be held at the Meredith Community Center (Room B) located at 1 Circle Drive in Meredith, NH. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register for the workshop, call the League of NH Craftsmen – Fine Craft Gallery at 603-279-7920 or stop by the gallery located at 279 Daniel Webster Highway in Meredith, NH. For more details, visit http:// meredith.nhcrafts.org/classes/ and find the League on Facebook at http://www. facebook.com/nhcraft/.

‘Cue The Grill Grilling Fruit for Cocktails By Chef Kelly Ross This time of year in the Lakes Region is a true breath of fresh air. Everyone seems happier when we have nice weather and even more so, most people start looking forward to vacations. Vacations mean days without worries, and although ordinarily that would be my segue into some recipes for food on the grill, I’m changing gears this time around. Although we will be talking about food on the grill, it’s not about preparing a great meal. This time it’s about grilling different fruits, and a veggie or two, to create some tasty options for one of the other summertime staples: a delicious cocktail or two. Fruits are one of the main mixers in one form or another when it comes to specialty cocktails, and just as the grill does for us carnivores in making proteins taste better, you can get the same results when grilling fresh fruit. I’m a huge fan. However, I preface this by telling you to please be responsible when making these drinks. None are for kids, and you should never drink and drive. I love LakerAd.pdf to grill1 1/9/2019 fruits 4:25:03 andM veggies.

Why, you ask? Because grilling makes everything better. I will admit I don’t eat as many vegetables as I should, but I certainly eat my share of fruit. Grilling brings out the flavors in everything. As I mentioned last week, grilled pineapple is one of the best grilled foods ever, especially if enhanced by a couple of fun marinades. It doesn’t end there. Throw cantaloupes, honeydew, peaches, plums, pears, strawberries, mangos, kiwi, apples and even watermelon on the grill, and you can make some fun dessert treats. Today’s theme is delicious cocktails. For the Bloody Mary aficionado, there is no reason why we can’t bring tomatoes, peppers, onions, and celery onto the grill until soft and put in a blender with your favorite Mary herbs. Regardless of fruit or vegetable, you will get a nice smoky flavor combined with their natural flavor and when popped into a blender with a couple of other things, it can step up your libations in a big way. I would like to throw one more important thought into the mix: grilled fruits make for a great smoothie as well.
When it comes to the basic cocktail, any fruit juice mixer is so much better with freshly squeezed as opposed to a bottled juice and/or one from concentrate. Using that mentality, grill first and then squeeze. You may need to let cool before adding to a drink, but it adds some fun flavor. When entertaining a large crowd and knowing I will be making a large amount of a certain drink, the day before I grill dozens of oranges, grapefruits, pears or mangos or whatever the flavor of the day is, cool them a little, squeeze and refrigerate them so they are ready for the crowd. Whether being used as a drink over the rocks, or sometimes better, in a blender as a frozen drink, you will most definitely notice the flavor difference. The drink choices are endless, and we will get into some fun recipes, all very quick and easy. A great way to use fresh fruit off the grill in a cocktail is by muddling. If you are familiar with a Mojito, fresh mint, sugar, and a little liquid is muddled on the bottom of the glass before pouring in the rest of the ingredients. For those unaware what a muddler is, it is a 6-inch-
long bar, about the circumference of a quarter, that has a plastic bottom used to crush fruit and fresh herbs with other ingredients to extract great flavor from within. When combined with the rest of the ingredients, the flavor is 10 fold. It is what brings out the huge mint flavor in a Mojito, and there are so many different types of Mojitos to make with grilled fruit, especially mangos, watermelon, grapefruit, cantaloupe and honeydew. Of course, we also have Sangrias, Hurricanes, Planters Punch and the like where grilled fruits make •’cue Continued on page 20

Page 20 | THE LAKER | May 27, 2019 top with a splash of grenadine. Let’s now get into some muddling with freshly grilled fruits. You will have fun making some crazy mojitos; you can find a muddler at almost any store that sells kitchen tools, or at a liquor store. They are inexpensive, and it is fun making any of these mojitos. Some of these require juicing the fruit and/ or muddling. By no means are these difficult, but it is a small production that your guests will enjoy watching, so let’s get into some different recipes. These can be prepped a day in advance, as far as the fruit is concerned.
•’cue Continued from page 14 the best juices. One of my favorite summertime drinks is a Champagne Punch, Malibu rum, and a great mix of grilled fruit juice as well as chunks of grilled fruit. Let’s start with a Campari Punch. To those not familiar with Campari, it is a liqueur, or aperitif, which is an infusion of herbs and fruit in alcohol. It is a little bitter and dark red in color. This drink contains Cocchi Americano, which is an aromatized wine created in 1891. This recipe makes a bowl of punch for 12 servings. Sparkling Campari Punch 8 large pink grapefruits. (You need 16 oz chilled juice, which gives you more for later) 16 oz chilled Cocchi Americano 8 oz Campari, chilled 1 750 ml bottle dry sparkling white wine Assorted pieces of any grilled fruit of choice Chilled seltzer of choice for last minute serving, optional Cut the grapefruit in half. Depending on what other fruits you may use to put in the punch, cut them in half as well. You should keep the rinds on at all times, except if using pineapple or watermelon chunks. Brush the cut sides of all fruit with oil and grill on a high heat with the fruit cut side down. Close the lid for 4-5 minutes and then check them. Squeeze gently. If there is
much more give than there was before you put them on, take them off. If some need a few more minutes, so be it. Apples will definitely take longer. Once off, whatever you want to juice (grapefruit for sure), do so while warm and then refrigerate. If using as chunks in the punch, refrigerate them right away. Once chilled, cut the meat out of the fruit, which will be in the punch as whole as possible and cut into bite sizes. Put those into a large serving bowl, and add anything that contains alcohol and refrigerate if there is room. If not, add the mixers at the same time as well. Serve with ice on the side, and leave some seltzer for a quick splash

over the top. As I have mentioned in past articles, New Orleans is arguably my favorite city to visit. When it comes to a cocktail, the Hurricane screams New Orleans. This is made with 3 types of rum and a mix of some great juices, generally pineapple and orange. One of my favorites is grilled mango. Your mission for this recipe is to grill about a dozen oranges cut in half, and a couple of pineapples that have been skinned, cored, and then cut into spears. Lightly oil the spears and the cut sides of the oranges and grill them until there is some good give in the orange skin when lightly squeezed and the pineapples are charred and soft. Put the pineapple spears in a blender, squeeze the juice from the orange halves into the blender and puree. If you like pulp in your juice, using a paring knife, skin as much of the orange meat left inside the skin as possible and add that to the blender as well. When time to make a Hurricane, you need 1 ounce each of a white rum, a dark rum, and the same of Bacardi 151 over ice, add the juice and
Watermelon Mojitos (makes 6 servings) ½ seedless watermelon 1 bunch of fresh mint, remove the tough stems 1 tbsp fine sugar 1 ¼ cups white rum 1 lime, cut in wedges Cut the rind off the melon. Cut into 1 ½ inch chunks and grill over a hot, smoky grill. Oil the grill to generate the flames/smoke. Grill the melon for 2 minutes, closing the grill, turn them, cover again, and pull them off and refrigerate for ½ hour. Puree ¾ of the melon in a blender. In a large container, throw in all but 6 mint sprigs, the sugar, and the limes and muddle heavily to extract the flavors from the mint and limes. Add the remaining watermelon chunks and continue to muddle to get the watermelon mostly liquefied and mix all ingredients well. Add the rum and watermelon juice and some ice and stir very well. In each glass, add more ice, pour in the mojito and garnish with a mint leaf. Mango Mojito (makes 10 servings) 6 fresh mangoes 2 cups light rum 12 limes ¾ cup granulated sugar •’cue Continued on page 21

May 27, 2019 | THE LAKER | Page 21 •’cue Continued from page 20 2/3 cup fresh mint leaves Two 12 oz cans club soda Cut all mangoes and limes in half. Save ½ of one mango to use as a garnish as you will slice thin slices, skin on, to put on each glass at serving time. The remaining mango and lime slices should be grilled, cut sides down. Once the limes can be squeezed, pull them and squeeze the juice out of them. Once the mangoes can be squeezed, which will take longer, pull them as well. Let cool to touch, and then scoop the pulp out of each and put the meat into a blender with the lime juice. You will likely have to do this in a few batches, but also add the sugar and rum. Lastly, put the mint leaves in and continue to blend until the mint is finely chopped. Refrigerate. When ready to serve, add the club soda to the mix and stir well. Pour into glasses and garnish with a fresh slice of mango. Blackberry Plum Mojitos (16 servings, prep one day in advance of making the drinks) 1 ¼ cups sugar with 1 ¼ cups water (simple syrup) 3 lemons 2 lbs plums, cut in half and pitted 18 oz fresh blackberries 1 cup fresh basil leaves 3 cups vodka 5 cups sparkling water Let’s start by making the simple syrup. Put the water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring
until the sugar is completely dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit at room temp for a while. Once at room temp, refrigerate. Simple syrup will hold in a refrigerator for a month. Put the plum and lemon halves onto a well-oiled grilled. These will not take long to grill. Ideally you want plums that aren’t quite ripe, but are a little tough. Make sure they are very soft once you pull them off the grill. Once the fruit is not too hot to the touch, put the plums and blackberries in a large bowl, squeeze in the lemon juice, add the simple syrup and fresh basil. Ideally, with a potato masher, mash lightly to release all the flavors and juices. Cover, refrigerate for at least a day, and up to 4 days. At service time, put the fruit concoction into a pitcher with the vodka and combine. Pour 1/3 of a cup into a glass, add ice, and top with sparking water and garnish with a basil leaf. Just another fruity and refreshing summertime classic to enjoy. These recipes can be a little high maintenance, but there is nothing like the taste of fresh fruit juice, not to mention with a smoky flavor. Great summer flavors and in an untraditional way, right off the barbie. Whichever way you choose to use these recipes, enjoy them, and always be smart and responsible my friends. Next week, I’ll be sharing some fun recipes off the grill celebrating Father’s Day. Until then, Bon Appétit, and Ciao. If you have any questions or feedback, don’t hesitate to touch base at fenwaysox10@gmail.com.
Free Outdoor Concert and Festivities Plan to be in Belmont, NH on Saturday, June 1 for a day of great music and festivities. Three bands will be featured in a free outdoor concert in Belmont village as part of the town’s 150th anniversary celebration. The event is open to everyone and will feature Stolen Thunder (http:// www.stolenthunderbandnh.com/) at 4 pm, with Belmont resident and alumnus Shawn Chase. The second band, 19 Miles Per Hour (https://www.19milesperhour. com) will perform at the Belmont Mill and will feature the vocals of brothers Michael and Danny Iacopucci, Belmont High School alumni. During the first two acts, talented performers of Cirque de Light (http://www.cirquedelight.com/), will provide roving entertainment of stilt walkers and contact jugglers. Make sure and bring your camera for a unique selfie! At 6 pm, there will be a short presentation of three mural panels designed and painted by students
from the elementary and middle schools in celebration of Belmont’s Sesquicentennial. The mural panels represent the town’s past, present, and future. Theatre Magic in the Lakes Region By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper The magic of the movies and the stars descended upon the Lakes Region, and specifically, the sleepy town of Gilford in the summer of 1949. (Before the arrival of live theatre, locals, if they were lucky, might go to the movies once a week. There they saw Mickey Rooney and Bette Davis and Judy Garland in glittering musicals, memorable dramas and lighthearted comedies at big movie houses such as the Colonial Theater in downtown Laconia.) In 1949, producer Alton Wilkes brought summer stock theatre to Gilford. Wilkes had a great deal of experience in summer stock productions and put that knowledge to use when he leased an old barn from Gilford landowner Harry Spencer and opened the Lakes Region Playhouse, according to “The Gunstock Parish” by Adair Mulligan. The barn, located at what today is Route 11B, was then part of the old Sanders Farm. The
farmhouse would much later become the popular restaurant B. Mae Denny’s Eating and Drinking Establishment, a mainstay in Gilford for many years. Wilkes and his wife bought the farmhouse with the idea of turning it into an inn, mainly to house and feed actors who would perform at the barn theatre just a stone’s throw away. Fittingly, they named the hotel the Stagedoor Inn. Wilkes faced a lot of work to renovate the barn in readiness for theatre use. Renovations to the original barn were extensive: a new floor was installed and siding was added to the exterior of the barn. The stage, dressing rooms, and audience seating took the place of cow stalls. However, the barn was very old and when the house was at full capacity (nearly 700 seats) on a hot summer’s evening, it was stifling. Eventually air conditioning was added, but for quite some time the actors endured the hot

lights in order to bring live theater to the eager audiences. Many stars on their way up or down the ladder of fame played at the rural New Hampshire spot. Although not as populated as today, Gilford, with its beautiful beaches and Lake Winnipesaukee, held great appeal to actors. Tallulah Bankhead, Joan Fontaine, Betty Grable, Shirley Booth and George Gobel were among the Hollywood names that brought
dramas, comedies and musicals to the Playhouse stage. Also Betty Grable, with her “million dollar legs”, and Ginger Rogers, the toast of Hollywood, once graced the barn stage. Although conditions were rustic in the barn theatre, many of the actors were seasoned performers, having started their careers in the days of vaudeville. May 27, 2019 | THE LAKER | Page 23 • Yesteryear Continued from page 22 performing on many different stages was second nature to them; the bonus of the beautiful Lakes Region beaches and scenery was probably very appealing. No small part of the attraction was the adoration they received from the local public. Stars held court after the show at The Stagedoor Inn. One report states that Joan Fontaine thrilled locals when she rode around in her Rolls Royce, according to “The Gunstock Parish” by Adair Mulligan. Vivian Vance glittered at the Weirs Beach policemen’s ball during her stay in the area. Playhouse actors enjoyed lunch at Sawyer’s Dairy Bar, located just across the street from the theatre. The drive-in restaurant served food to stars before the show, or during the weekly rehearsals. Imagine the thrill for tourists who stopped at Sawyer’s for a hamburger and ice cream, only to find the likes of Ginger Rogers seated in the next booth! During the 1950’s, many local people who loved the theatre invited the stars and cast of actors, along with Wilkes and his crew to opening night parties. Stories of entertaining Hollywood actors in Gilford homes created quite a stir. When Gypsy Rose Lee performed at the Playhouse in 1956, it’s sure people from all walks of life lined up for tickets! A schedule of plays from 1956 lists Dorothy Lamour in Roger the Sixth, Joan Bennett in Janus and Henry Morgan in Father of the Bride, to name but a few. That year, ticket prices were $3.90, $3.30, $2.75 and $2.00! In the early 1960’s the New Stagedoor Inn became the Playhouse Inn with Back Stage Dining Room and Curtain Call Lounge. Such stars as Ann Southern visited the lounge after a summer performance in 1963. Eventually Wilkes left the summer theater, and other producers stepped in to keep the curtain rising at the old barn
playhouse. In the 1970’s, John Raitt was a favorite with audiences when he performed in Shenandoah and Man of La Mancha. On the 25th anniversary of the theatre in 1974, John Astin and Patty Duke Astin, Sylvia Sydney (a beautiful star from Hollywood’s golden era), David McCallum, and Peggy Cass filled the summer line up. Ticket sales were brisk and the actors ensured the star quality that vacationers came back to see again and again. In 1976, a young John Travolta appeared at the Playhouse in Bus Stop. Although unknown at the time, Travolta, like many up-and-coming actors, gained valuable experience on the Gilford stage. In the late 1980’s, a local group of people interested in seeing the theatre continue formed Star Theatre Productions Voluntary Association. The non-profit group’s aim was to revive summer theatre at the barn, and they named the place the Gilford Playhouse. The old barn was still functional as a theatre, and the nonprofit had high hopes to revive star entertainment in Gilford. But after two summers, rising costs and declining ticket sales meant the end of the Playhouse. Although such stars as John Raitt, Jane Powell, David Hedison and Patrice Munsel appeared in big musicals, times were changing. Older audiences still wanted the highcost, large cast musicals of the past, but to bring the shows to the area, it meant rising ticket prices. Those prices were a reflection of the money necessary to carry off a big production. The old barn theatre had run its course. The Gilford Playhouse closed and soon summer stock, with its stars and glitter and entertainment, was gone. Another summer stock theatre born many years ago continues to thrive today. The Barnstormers Theater in Tamworth, New Hampshire was
founded in the early 1930s by Francis and Alice Cleveland and Ed Goodnow. The original troupe was made up mostly of young actors who were recent college graduates. The troupe opened each play in Tamworth and then traveled (or “barnstormed as the saying went), to towns in Maine and New Hampshire. The final Saturday night show took place back in Tamworth at the Tamworth Gardens, a former boxing venue. The added attraction was that the audience was often greeted by First Lady Frances Cleveland (her son, Francis, was one of the theatre’s founders and the family summered in the Tamworth area). Eventually the troupe moved into their permanent home in the former Kimball’s Store on Tamworth’s Main Street. The theatre continues at the spot today, in a muchrenovated and updated building where a roster of great live shows take place each summer. Although not in the Lakes Region, the New London Barn Playhouse in the Sunapee area holds the distinction of being “the oldest, continuously operating Summer Stock theater in
New Hampshire, a distinction which has gained it inclusion in the state’s Register of Historic Places” according to information at www.nlbarn.org. In 1933, the Chair of the Department of Speech at Mount Holyoke College arrived in New London accompanied by four female students. With assistance from colleagues at the local Colby Junior College and some male actors from the community, the New London Players of New Hampshire was born. The first show was a sell-out and by the following year, the Everett Barn on Main Street was renovated and became a theater. Through the year, the Playhouse has produced wonderful shows and continues to this day. For the Gilford Playhouse, the days of movie star glitter and make believe live on in the memories of those who still reminisce about the actors they saw at the old barn theatre. But live theatre continues in New Hampshire in Tamworth and New London. For the price of a ticket, anyone can experience the magic when the lights go up and the curtain is raised for another summer of theatre.

Portland Jazz Orchestra Coming to Wolfeboro June 1 The Wolfeboro Friends of Music is presenting the Portland Jazz in concert on Saturday, June 1 at 7:30 pm at Brewster’s Anderson Hall, located at 205 S. Main St. in Wolfeboro. Started in 2004, the Portland Jazz Orchestra (PJO) is Maine’s premier concert jazz ensemble. Under the direction of Dr. Christopher Oberholter, the 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO enjoys playing works written by both current and past members including Brad Ciechomski, Chris Humphrey, Wiullie Johnson, Mike Sakash, Craig Skeffington, Jake Sturtevant and Terry White. Additionally, PJO enjoys performing literature composed by a wide variety of jazz artists including such luminaries as Tom Kubis, Eric Richards, Bob Mintzer, Gerry Mulligan, Bill Holman, Maria Schneider and Gordon Goodwin. The diversity of repertoire the PJO performs may also be heard when they perform classic works from the libraries of such big bands as the Count Basie Orchestra, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Duke Ellington’s Orchestra and the Stan Kenton Orchestra. The group is made up of professional musicians, many of whom are both performers and educators in northern New England. Members have performed, recorded and toured with numerous artists and groups such as; Natalie Cole, Tony Bennett, Herb Pomeroy, Marvin Stamm, Barry Manilow, Roberta Flack, the Temptations, the Artie Shaw Orchestra, the Smithsonian Masterworks Jazz Orchestra, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra and the Glenn Miller Orchestra. In addition to an active performance schedule, you may hear the PJO on their
debut recording, Nor’easter, featuring many original compositions and arrangements. Nicholas F. Mondello, a writer for the internationally acclaimed website, All About Jazz, said this about this recording: “In meteorological terms, a nor’easter describes a weather event…a storm of rain, wind, and biting chill. With Nor’easter, Portland Jazz Orchestra does, indeed, storm on with terrific charts, absolutely firstrate ensemble work and inspired solo playing that combines for a heavy downpour of talent and swing. Bundle up.” Selections planned for the June 1 concert include Almost Like Being in Love, I Wish You Love, Sunny Side of the Street, A Tisket a Tasket, All of Me, In the Still of the Night, and All or Nothing at All, among other works by jazz greats. This is the eighth program presented by Wolfeboro Friends of Music to the greater Lakes Region during its season, which runs from September through June 1. Tickets are available for $25 at the door, Black’s Paper Store and Avery Insurance in Wolfeboro, or at Innisfree Bookshop in Meredith; by calling 603-569-2151, or by visiting www.wfriendsofmusic.org. In WFOM’s continued effort to make music accessible to our youth, all high school students with ID and all children accompanied by an adult ticket purchaser will be admitted free of charge. Spiritual Medium…and Classic Hit Makers at Flying Monkey Witness James Van Praagh as he communicates with the spirit world at The Flying Monkey in Plymouth on Thursday, June 6 at 7:30 pm. Known as a Clairvoyant and Spiritual Medium, Van Praagh is also a bestselling author and TV personality. Considered one of the most widelyrecognized and accurate spiritual mediums working today, James Van Praagh provides evidential proof of life after death via highly detailed messages from the spiritual realm. He is hailed throughout the world as a pioneer of the mediumship movement. Van Praagh’s overarching message is that there are lessons you can learn from death, and that the dead are still here all around us. He says death is our home. The earth is our school. Van Praagh started his journey of developing his connection as a medium over 35 years ago. Born in New York, James ventured to California with the intention of becoming a sitcom writer. “I went to see the spiritual medium Brian Hurst, and he told me that I had the ability to be a medium and that I was going to help change the consciousness of the planet,” he said. “That really got me thinking about psychic phenomenon, healing and wisdom.” That encounter planted a seed that would eventually sprout into a full blooming connection to the spirit world. James has become nationally known as a pioneer in the field of mediumship and has worked with millions of people, including celebrities. He co-produced “The Ghost Whisperer,” and has been on numerous television shows including “Oprah,” “Dr. Phil,” “Larry King Live,” “20/20,” “The View,” “Chelsea Lately” and the “Today Show.” He has penned 11 books, with “Talking to Heaven” reaching the No. 1 spot on the New York Times best-seller list and the newest, “The Power of
Love: Connecting to the Oneness,” released at the end of 2016. Van Praagh has a bevy of accolades, and although he isn’t keen on making house calls, he does tour the nation, hosting various demonstrations and events hoping to connect as many people with their loved ones as possible. Join the original “Ghost Whisperer” for a one-of-a-kind evening that will expand your awareness and bring you in direct connection to the Other Side. James will share life-changing insights gleaned from decades of speaking with Spirit, and deliver detailed messages that will prove the existence of life after death. You will leave transformed and inspired, with a fresh perspective on life and death- and a stronger connection. Jay And The Americans perform at The Flying Monkey on Sunday, June 9 at 6:30 pm. During the 1960’s, they became known as hit makers in the popular music scene. Jay and the Americans, started by four teenage boys in Sandy Yaguda’s Brooklyn basement 50 years ago, is one of the lasting success stories in rock ’n roll history. From 1962 to 1971, this group charted an amazing 12 Top 10 records. Jay and the Americans’ first recording was Tonight (from the musical West Side Story); but their breakout hit song was She Cried. The group’s next chart hit was Only In America, followed by top-ten hits Come A Little Bit Closer, Cara Mia, and This Magic Moment. These songs and many others are featured in Jay and the Americans show, along with stories of the artists and writers who influenced this 1960s super-group. Jay and the Americans’ recording of Some Enchanted Evening holds the record for most copies sold of this legendary musical masterpiece. The group also holds the distinct honor of recording the great Neil Diamond’s first hit song, Sunday and Me. Their recording of Crying
pays tribute to the legendary Roy Orbison, with whom they toured, along with many other acts including The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In 2002, Jay and the Americans were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, placing them among the greatest vocal groups in Rock ‘n Roll history. “This concert will take folks on
a nostalgic ride through popular music of the 60’s,” says Seth McNally of The Flying Monkey. “A must-see show for any fan of early blue-eyed soul.” For more information on upcoming shows or to purchase tickets call the box office at 603536-2551 or go online at www. flyingmonkeyNH.com.

With opening day just one month away, the staff at the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM) are looking ahead to a busy summer season. It also has been a busy winter at the museum; this past winter, NHBM not only paid off the mortgage on four acres of waterfront property upon which it plans to construct a state-of-the-art facility, it also repaired its current structure. “The roof on our current museum structure was replaced, which lays the groundwork for its future as a boat building and restoration workshop center,” explained Martha Cummings, executive director. “This was quite an undertaking.” This past off-season, the staff planned a number of events, some of which will be expanded this year. Highlights in 2019 include the Vintage Boat and Car Auction in July and biennial Wolfeboro Vintage Race Boat Regatta in September. Featured programs at NHBM include Model Yacht Building, Youth, Family, and Adult Boat Building, Sailboat Sharing Program (SSP) and the Community Sailing Program (CSP). Staff also worked to develop its featured exhibit, which this year is entitled, “Racing on Waterways of NH” for which Cummings expressed particular excitement.
“Racing on New Hampshire’s lakes is part of our history, and it still takes place today, too,” she said. “I think NHBM serves an important role in that we do not just educate people about the waterways of New Hampshire, we let people explore and experience them in a number of ways.” One program at NHBM has started for the season, as locals and area visitors can enjoy 45-minute tours on the Millie B; tours began on Memorial Day weekend. A 28-foot, mahogany, triple cockpit “Woodie” and replica 1928 Hacker-Craft that is accurate down to seat colors, the Millie B recreates “the experience of the golden age of boating.” In looking ahead at the season, Cummings said she expects the busiest season in NHBM’s history due to expanded programs and events within a condensed time-frame. “We are going to hit the ground or water, I should say - running,” she added. “If anyone wants to experience the Lakes Region, I think NHBM is the place to be.” Founded in 1992 by vintage boating enthusiasts, NHBM is committed to inspire people of all ages with an understanding of, and appreciation for, the boating heritage of New Hampshire’s fresh waterways.

With affection and enthusiasm, ATTP dedicates its 2019 Summer Concert Series to Dick Stuart. A late friend and great supporter of the Concert Series, Dick would have loved the exciting and eclectic lineup, even as he celebrated the concerts’ role in building connection and community. Before entering his senior year, Evan will be attending the voice program at the Chautauqua Institution this
summer. There, he will sing the role of Theseus in Benjamin Britten’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Doors for the June 19 Sandwich concert will open at 7 pm. Methods of fabrication such as accordion fold books, Japanese stab binding, and pamphlet binding will be demonstrated. Altering, cutting and deconstructing existing books will be explored. Fill the blank books you create with all kinds of media, painting, poetry, collage or photography. Take a used book which will be supplied and alter or refashion it to create secret compartments and discover the sculptural quality of books. Bring anything you would like to include in several handmade books. All art materials will be supplied. No experience is required, just a willingness to explore, play and discover your creative spirit with paper. In the two-day Watercolor Portraits workshop taking place July 2 and 3 or July 26 and 27, students will complete a large-scale lifelike portrait. Working from a high-resolution photograph, learn techniques for creating a grid to aid your drawing of proportions, work with large brushes and pouring watercolors to create a stunning portrait. Each day will begin with a demonstration of color mixing, skin tones, and looking closely at details of the face, such as eyes and mouth. Students then spread out, each to
their own work area, to work on their finished portrait. Students will need to bring a high-resolution photo; all other materials will be provided. The workshop is suitable for intermediate to advanced students. The two-day Landscapes in Watercolor workshop on July 6 and 7 will focus on drawing the landscape and painting with watercolors. The class will begin with a fundamental discussion of drawing in the landscape, color mixing, perspective and composition. The twoday workshop allows participants to deepen their understanding of a subject matter, work on a larger scale, and work on more complex compositions. The Introduction to Printmaking Workshop on July 11 or July 21 will explore color, pattern and design with simple printmaking techniques. The beginning printmaking class teaches skills in Gel printing, Trace mono printing, and foam plate printing. No prior experience is required, just a willingness to explore, experiment and discover your artistic spirit. All materials are provided. Artists of all levels are welcome to join. The course can be taken in conjunction with the Handmade and Altered Art Book Workshop on Tuesday, July 23. The printmaking class provides the imagery to fill your beautiful handmade books. Boating on the Lakes Hands to Wood. Wood to Water.
There’s a boatload of watercraft resources around the Lakes Region By Mark Foynes Although it is not officially summertime yet, it’s never too early to plan excursions to get out on the water. My kayak lays dreaming - and I dream of my kayak. To be sure, the region boasts high quality pre-built vessels available at reputable boat dealers throughout the region - from Alton and Wolfeboro in the east, through Gilford and Laconia and thence into the Newfound and Squam regions. Meredith, Moultonborough, and Center Harbor also boast quality marinas. Some of
these establishments have been serving customers for decades. But the allure of the lakes induce some to want to construct their own watercraft. Hands to wood. Wood to water. And from water to heart and soul. For those who wish to construct their own canoes, kayaks, and rowboats, there are educational, hands-on programs throughout the region. There are also several purveyors of specialty woods ideal for boat builders. One such resource is Newfound Woodworks in Bristol. The fami-

Handmade at Newfound Woodworks. ly-owned company offers a wide selection of materials and build kits. Newfound also offers specialty woods for custom builders. Newfound has been serving customers for 35 years, as of 2019. Their website notes, “We create cedar strip canoe, kayak and rowing boat kits. Our kits are engineered so that you can build these beautiful boats using mostly just hand tools. If you do not want to build your own, we would be happy to build it for you as well.” It continues, “We offer cove & bead strips of Northern White Cedar, Western Red Cedar, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. These species can be mixed to create a pattern in your canoes or kayaks. Our goal is to help you achieve a successful boat building endeavor.”
Their website, listed below, accesses links to some of what their kits look like upon completion. The late founder, Michael Vermouth, writing about his endeavor recalled, “I started the Newfound Woodworks in October 1984 as a woodworking/ cabinet shop. I manufactured custom doors, windows, cabinets and furniture for about three years. Then I found Ted Moore’s’ book “Canoecraft” and built a Prospector and Red Bird canoe…I became fascinated with this process because the boats were lightweight, strong, reasonably maintenance free and incredibly beautiful.” Michael died in 2016, and the com• Boating Continued on page 33

May 27, 2019 | THE LAKER | Page 33 trees that were milled on-site were native soft and hardwoods like pine and oak. As the business evolved, the company began to import exotic woods like ebony, mahogany, and teak. This transition attracted a number of furniture craftsmen, as well as local boatbuilders, who prize the resiliency of this tight-grained stock. The elder Mahlstead was able to develop a niche market based on his own interest in boating, the younger Carl explained. While Goosebay still mills construction-grade wood, the company has established itself as a specialty purveyor that can supply high-end furniture makers and boat builders. The raw timber is sourced from reputable sources, the younger Mahlstead noted. “We don’t just buy from someone who says, ‘I know a guy,’” he joked. Mahlstead said that he wants customers to know they are purchasing the highest quality wood that is responsibly sourced. He said that much of Goosebay’s timber is kiln-dried. This ensures that milled lumber is ready for use, and also free of invasive insects
like the Asian longhorn beetle, which hitched a ride on low-grade pallet wood shipped in by other dealers. Rather, Goosebay diligently researches the reputations of dealers who have contacts in Africa, Asia, and Central and South America. “We definitely get lumber from those guys,” Mahlstead said. Goosebay prides itself on high-quality boat building materials, as well as quality wood for finish carpenters and cabinetmakers. The company can boast a wide range of boat-building materials. These include marine-grade laminates, mahogany, teak, and water-resilient epoxies to keep crafts together. Carl has noted a shift in inventory. As species such as rosewood are in decreasing supply, Goosebay is always in search of quality substitutes. One such species is Paulownia. A recent Japanese encyclopedia noted, “Paulownia wood is very light, fine-grained, and warp-resistant.” It’s used in the construction of regional musical instruments and is a suitable boat-building substitute for rosewood • Boating Continued on page 34

pany is now run by his hand-picked successor and long-time associate Alan Mann and his partner, Rose Woodyard. She is a boat builder, as well as an owner. (Yes, she helps run a custom lumber operation and her name is Woodyard; when we chatted by phone, pun making was restrained). Both are passionate about Newfound. Visitors are welcome to browse and chat at their Bristol facility. “We have finished boats to see, as well as having typically about 4-5 boats in different stages of build in the build room,” they say. “Company here is always welcome,” said Mann. Both he and Woodyard stressed that building relationships with customers and high-quality products are core values of their business. “If you know exactly what you want or are unsure of what you need, we can help,” Mann said. He added, “If you’re looking for advice, we can also help set you in the direction that’s right.” Newfound has a robust local business throughout the Lakes Region, but they’ve also shipped to far off locales. These include all 50 states, the UK, Colombia, Australia, Finland, and New Zealand. Newfound’s canoe kits range in price, starting from $1,500. The website notes that a kit includes a “plan sheet and layout sheet, Stripbuilding Notes, and a CD of Construction Pictures. Coved and Beaded 6-ft. to 10ft. Northern White Cedar Strips, About 30 percent Full Length Western Red Cedar Strips, Solid, pre-milled Ash Outwales, Scuppered Ash Inwales, Ash Thwart or Yoke, Natural Cane/
Ash Seat(s), Ash Seat Hangers, Seat Hardware, Stem Laminations, Deck Material, Fiberglass, Slow Cure, Low Viscosity, Non-Blushing Epoxy, Epoxy Application Supplies, and Varnish.” Newfound also offers two-day build workshops. While the summer events do generate some revenue, Woodyard noted that the “real value is allowing people to have a hands-on experience with an experienced builder, and get out on the water in ‘A Functional Work of Art’ they made with their own two hands.” Another supplier that caters to boat builders is Goosebay Lumber in Chichester, about a half-hour’s drive from Alton Bay. It’s a quick scoot down Rte. 28 and just a smidge down the way on Rte 4. Goosebay is a family business managed by a father and son tandem. Carl Mahlstead Sr. started his sawmill in 1978. Originally the mill served the construction industry and homeowners with structural and exterior-grade lumber. But as time went on, Goosebay began to specialize in furniture-grade and fine finish lumber. Having a love of boating, an extension of this evolution involved an expansion into provisioning boat builders with specialty lumber needed to construct water-worthy vessels. Carl said, “For me it was personal - I love boating and we’re proud to supply great materials to people who share my passion.” When we briefly chatted, Mahlstead was opening for business and he had customers to attend to. So we followed up via phone and got his partner and son - also named Carl. Carl Jr. recalled jaunting about the lumberyard in the 1980s. During Goosebay’s early years, most of the

Its heartwood has a yellowish color, it is very durable, and resistant to both rot and insect attack; it’s sometimes used as a substitute for Teak. Wood-database.com boasted the lumber’s appeal: “Given the high prices of genuine Teak, Iroko could be considered a low-cost alternative. The wood is stable, durable, and has an overall look that somewhat resembles Teak.” For hands-on learners of all ages, one of the region’s leading resources for builders of all ages is the N.H. latter category, groups can consist of children and parents or grandkids with their grandparents. Executive director Martha Cummings said that boat building is “a way to engage kids and bring families together by engaging in a shared project”. The Adult and Family program will run nine days from July 6 to 14. Sessions take place between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. The museum’s website describes the program as a way for “adults or a team of parent(s) or grandparent(s) and child to assemble a selected boat project.” It continues, “We will provide all the tools, supplies and expertise to help you build your boat.” And, “At the end of the session, a special launching on Lake Wentworth will be held to celebrate the completion of the craft.” Participants can build a two-person canoe, a one-man kayak, an 11-ft. skiff, a 12.5-ft. paddleboard, or a dinghy. The Boat Museum also offers a

Blockbuster Summer Season Set at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse The Winnipesaukee Playhouse summer of six professional productions opens on June 12 at the Meredith theatre. Popular musicals, prize-winning dramas and hilarious comedies were chosen to offer audiences superb entertainment and thought-provoking experiences. Academy Award winner, noted director, and actor Ernest Thompson takes the lead with a new production of his popular “On Golden Pond”. As director, Thompson will be revisiting the celebrated play he wrote decades earlier, with the intent of deconstructing it; stripping it down to its original intent this time from the inside out. And in portraying Norman, Thompson says, “I consider it an honor to follow in the footsteps of thousands of actors who have preceded me.” Joining him in the cast are Lisa Bostnar as Ethel, Anna Rock as Chelsea, Landon Shaw as Charlie, and Cody Hodgins as Billy Ray. Ken Ludwig’s “Moon Over Buffalo” is a fast-paced frolic and farce that delivers the uproarious fun truth that much of the drama of theatre is behind the scenes. Especially when you combine fading thespians with ingenues, agents,
roués, and a bit of misbegotten swordplay designed to wow a Hollywood director who may – or may not – arrive. Performances run from June 26 through July 6 (there will not be a performance on July 4). The multiple Tony-winning musical “Avenue Q” will transport you to a decidedly quirky quarter where musical characters explore the dynamics of what it means to be a neighbor….and puppets hold sway. Do not expect the sweet and goofy rhymes of childhood: these puppets swear, and still endear themselves to audiences despite foul language and adult situations. Funny and frank and full of good humor: and decidedly not your children’s Sesame Street, the show opens July 11 and runs through July 20. “Chicago”, the blockbuster musical, comes to the Lakes Region – which is the only place in all New England you can see this awardwinner north of Broadway. Filled with fantastic actors, singers, and dancers who will be performing on sets designed by Emmy Award • Playhouse Continued on page 38

winner Melissa Shakun, who returns to the Playhouse for this production. Also returning to the Playhouse is director Clayton Phillips who will direct the large cast that includes Ashley Whalley as Velma Kelly, Haley Jones as Roxie Hart, JohnMichael Breen as Amos Hart, and Steve McCoy as Billy Flynn. The three-week run is July 25 to August 10. Dining with your prospective inlaws can be a daunting proposition. Particularly when a traditional San Francisco household is about to welcome, sight unseen, their
daughter’s new love, who happens to be a black man. Progressive thinking meets progressive reality, and the contrast and challenge is treated with humor and warmth in this relatively new stage version of the popular film original “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” Like the film, the stage play revisits the ongoing conversation about mixed race and generational differences. See it August 14 to 24. Closing out the summer, from August 28 to Sept. 7, journey to California, where one suite in the Beverly Hills Hotel is home-awayfrom-home to visitors from NYC, Philadelphia, London, and Chicago, all with their own tale to tell.

Ernest Thompson – actor, author, director, and Academy Award winner – will star with Lisa Bostnar in a new production of his popular play On Golden Pond, June 12-22 at Meredith’s Winnipesaukee Playhouse.
“California Suite” is a testament to the comedy genius of prolific author Neil Simon, who weaves four tales by his masterful comedy. Long regarded as America’s foremost writer of comedies for stage, screen and TV – with multiple awards – Simon takes bickering couples, marital indiscretion, career
disappointment and competing couples and spins them into gold. The Winnipesaukee Playhouse continues their ‘Made in America’themed year with productions scheduled through December. Visit www.winnipesaukeeplayhouse.org for complete information and tickets, or phone 603-279-0333.
