By Sarah Wright It’s that time of year again, and the holidays are upon us! Although it’s bittersweet to see the beautiful leaves fade, we’ve had wonderful weather this fall. But now it’s time to warm up by the fire, and think about how fortunate we are to celebrate the holiday season in the picturesque Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Here are some options this month to kick off the fun of the season. (See part two of this story featuring further holiday events in the December issue of The Laker.) I love a good holiday craft fair and there are many every year around the lake. Bring your gift list to the Nutcracker Christmas Fair at the St. Andre Bessette Parish Hall at 31 Gilford Avenue in Laconia. This year’s fair will be held on Friday, November 8 from 5 to 8 pm, and on Saturday, November 9 from 9 am to 2:30 pm. In addition to the unique crafters, including a well-stocked jewelry room, there will be spectacular theme baskets, a raffle tower, and “gifts to go” as well as a children’s corner with face painting, games, and prizes. When you get hungry, you can purchase baked goods, Father Marc’s famous pork pies, and cookies on the cookie walk, or have lunch at the fair’s café. Happy shopping! If you like the homemade touch, there are options for creating your own gifts this year. Learn how to make your very own watercolor cards for the holidays with Ann Xavier at The League of

Lillian Gish stars in “The Wind” at the Flying Monkey Movie House psychological forces, even as the story brims with melodramatic action. The film was shot on location in the Mojave Desert outside Bakersfield, California in temperatures often above 100 degrees. Airline engines were used to stir up the ever-present wind and sand that add pressure to Gish’s character. In an article for ‘Motion Picture’ magazine, writer Katherine Albert described her visit to the set: “Directly in front of the shack stood a little figure and in front of her were the cameras. There was the usual number of workers, all wearing high boots in case they encountered rattlesnakes, and most of them had white-looking stuff smeared over their faces to keep off sunburn. Goggles, making them look like men from Mars, were worn to protect their eyes from the sand.” The little figure referred to by Albert was Lillian Gish. Recalling the working conditions, Gish said the film was “without any doubt, the most unpleasant picture I’ve ever made.” Her hard work gained recognition
As MGM’s final major silent picture, it marked the end of an era. Even so, “The Wind” broke new cinematic ground, with Swedish director Victor Seastrom getting an acclaimed performance from beloved actress Lillian Gish. “The Wind” (1928) will be shown on Thursday, November 14 at 6:30 pm at the Flying Monkey Moviehouse and Performance Center at 39 South Main St., Plymouth. The screening will be accompanied with live music by silent film musician Jeff Rapsis. In “The Wind”, a frail young woman (Gish) from the East moves in with her cousin in remote west Texas, where she causes tension within the family. Gish’s character is slowly driven mad by the incessant, never-ending wind. For her, “The Wind” represented a stark departure from the Victorian films of D.W. Griffith that had made her famous. Instead, “The Wind” was emblematic of a new breed of introspective cinema, with the drama coming from

Celebrate Christmas Memories during Christmas at the Castle On the weekends immediately before and after Thanksgiving, Castle in the Clouds will host its popular annual Christmas at the Castle program. The festive event brings the community together at the historic mountaintop estate. Working with the theme of “Christmas Memories,” local businesses and designers will showcase their design aesthetic by adopting a room in the mansion or area of the estate grounds and decorating it to the nines. Photography Reception at Lakes Region Art Association Gallery A recent field trip was attended by member photographers from the Lakes Region Art Association (LRAA)/ Gallery to Fuller Botanical Gardens, located on the NH seacoast in North Hampton. The Gardens feature a formal rose garden, Japanese garden and English perennial plantings. It was, as one of the photographers jokingly said, “a blooming good time”. The photographers spent the better part of the day taking photos of flowers and plants, capturing the beauty of the horticulture there. Team leader, and LRAA member, Ellen Goddard Jacques, plus the team, expressed thanks to Fuller for allowing them the opportunity to photograph the gardens. Goddard is pleased to announce there will be an open-to-the-public reception for displaying the photos at the LRAA

In Pursuit of a New Hampshire Treasure: Guitar Virtuoso Ed Gerhard By Mark Okrant During the past nine months, I’ve spent countless hours locating, interviewing, and presenting stories about wonderful, albeit (at times) hidden persons, places, and events to Laker readers. What a wonderful education I’ve received to date, and learning about this week’s subject was also instructive. Edward “Ed” Gerhard is an American Grammy Award winning guitarist, known for his acoustic fingerstyle guitar playing and lap steel guitar music. He was born in Abington, Pennsylvania in 1956. At age 10, seeing the great classical guitarist, Andrés Segovia, on television, initially inspired Gerhard. This was the first time the young Gerhard had ever been exposed to guitar music being played without supporting voice or instrumentation, and he says, “The sound just instantly got to me.” Fortunately for worldwide audiences, his interest hasn’t waned. Gerhard obtained his first guitar at 14 years of age. After hearing the music of bluesman Mississippi John Hurt, he began to redirect the emphasis
of his music. Few of us could have accomplished more than a few basic chords without receiving formal training. Yet, Gerhard was able to learn, and then perfect his craft by slowing old-fashioned LPs to half speed, then imitating what he was hearing. By the age of 15, Gerhard was performing at a local church and in basement coffee houses, while jamming with local friends. Ten years after

making Portsmouth, New Hampshire his permanent home, Gerhard’s debut solo album, Night Birds, was released in 1987. Four years later, in 1991, he made the decision to establish Virtue Records in Center Strafford, a record label for his work and for others’ acoustic guitar music. Gerhard’s career accelerated, as he released nine CDs over a 15-year period. These included Christmas (1991), Luna (1993), The Live Album (1999), and both Sunnyland and House of Guitars (2006). As recognition of Gerhard’s artistry gained momentum, honors followed. In 1997, Breedlove Guitars released the Ed Gerhard Signature Model Guitar. Later, Breedlove Guitars collaborated with Gerhard to release a Weissenborn, or Acoustic Hawaiian Lap Slide guitar. In 2000, he was presented a Player’s Choice Award by Acoustic Guitar. Gerhard has served as a guest guitarist on four productions: North with Bill Morrissey, Song of the Wind and Mystic Journey with Arlo Guthrie, and Stars in My Crown with Jorma Kaukonen. In 2004, Gerhard received a Grammy Award for his participation in the album, Henry Mancini: Pink Guitar, for his arrangement and performance of “Moon River.”
I had the opportunity to interview Gerhard via email while he was touring in Japan. I asked him—having written and performed original music, been an innovator of instrumentation, and performed all over the world—which of his many accomplishments resonates most deeply. His response did not surprise me. “Playing music to people is always a profound experience for me. I love writing and playing music, but communicating the music to an audience is (still) the ultimate for me.” Gerhard’s career extends well beyond CDs. In 2001, he participated in the soundtrack for Ken Burns’ Mark Twain. This was followed by work on Ivano Ponzini’s Le Vie Di Sempre, and a follow-up cooperation with Burns on The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. There have been several videos: All-Star Guitar Night (1996), Ed Gerhard Solo Guitar Performance (2003), and A Fingerstyle Summit with Martin Simpson and Adrian Legg (2007). Additionally, Gerhard’s work was featured or incorporated into seven different music books, published between 1994 and 2009. Whether performing on a 6-string, 12-string, slide guitar, or Acoustic Hawaiian Lap Slide, Gerhard’s music has been described by various reviewers as “exhibiting virtuosity, generosity, and sly humor,” while commending its gorgeous tone and compositional depth. Scott Alalrik of the Boston Globe wrote, “Gerhard does not write instrumentals; he writes songs only a guitar can sing.” One other reviewer described his approach to the Weissenborn as “unique . . . his beautiful melodies, complex chords, and moving baselines have played a significant role in reinvigorating interest in this esoteric, but beautiful instrument.” • Ed Continued on page 15

November, 2019 | THE LAKER | Page 15 • Ed Continued from page 14 I asked Gerhard which of the famous artists who have sat in with him was especially memorable. His response was, “I’ve been honored to sit in with some of the artists who were foundational in my development as a musician and a few have sat in with me as well. Playing with Leo Kottke was a huge thrill for me and we sounded real good. Greg Leisz sat in with me at a show in LA and blew my mind” - clearly shows that he hasn’t lost his passion for performing, or the other greats in his discipline. In preparation for writing this column, I listened to three of Gerhard’s songs—“Promised Land,” “Isa Lei,” and “Bottleneck Blues” on YouTube. As a non-musician, I’ve always been appreciative of the skill it takes to perform the most basic of songs. However, as I sat watching Gerhard perform, it occurred to me that I was witnessing something that would make the Greek Mousai (muses) green with envy. Simply put, Gerhard’s seemingly effortless ability to produce beautiful
sounds filled me with a level of exhilaration that lasted long after his playing had ceased. Fortunately, it isn’t necessary to follow Gerhard on one of the tours that take him throughout the United States and Canada, to several European countries, as well as Japan, China and Korea in Asia. During the month of December, Ed Gerhard will be performing publicly in New Hampshire on four occasions. He will appear at the Sunapee Methodist Church in Sunapee, on December 6. Also, his annual Christmas Guitar Concerts will be held at the Belknap Mill in Laconia, on December 7, and at the Unitarian Church in Portsmouth, on December 13, with two shows on December 14. When asked if there was anything special in store for attendees to this year’s Christmas concert, he replied, “Every year the show is a little different. I like to be spontaneous, so the arrangements of the tunes change a bit every time I play them. It’s a thrill for me, and I think the listeners get some sense of my engagement.” For ticket information, visit https:// virtuerecords.com/tour-dates.

Suspenseful Book with a Ghostly Twist Subject of Next Mystery Discussion Vermont, 1950. There’s a place for the girls whom no one wants the troublemakers, the illegitimate, the too smart for their own good. It’s called Idlewild Hall. And in the small town where it’s located, there are rumors that the boarding school is haunted. Four roommates bond over their whispered fears, their budding friendship blossoming - until one of them mysteriously disappears. Vermont, 2014. As much as she has tried, journalist Fiona Sheridan cannot stop revisiting the events surrounding her older sister’s death. Twenty years ago, her body was found lying in the overgrown fields near the ruins of Idlewild Hall. And though her sister’s boyfriend was tried and convicted of murder, Fiona can’t shake the suspicion that something was never right about the case. When Fiona discovers that Idlewild Hall is being restored by an anonymous benefactor, she decides to write a story about it. But a shocking discovery during the renovations will link the loss of her sister to secrets that were meant to stay hidden in the past and a voice that won’t be silenced.
The Broken Girls by Simone St. James, a suspenseful crime drama with an engaging backdrop and a chilling supernatural twist, is the next book in Wolfeboro Public Library’s mystery book series. ‘Cue The Grill Cooking for Our Veteran Friends By Chef Kelly Ross We are now on the doorstep of saying farewell to autumn, and I’ve gone from shorts to pants and t-shirts to hooded sweatshirts. It won’t be long before we go from sneakers to boots as well. Regardless how you feel about the
changing seasons and colder weather, winter will soon be upon us, so fill the oil tank, buy a few cords of wood, schedule your plow dude for the winter and buckle up for the ride. Today’s theme is cooking for what I consider arguably the most important
people in this country. Let’s talk about spoiling the taste buds with some of the ultimate comfort foods for those who truly deserve our respect and our time: our veterans. The veterans in my life are also my friends who have served this country, and who fought never came home. When I was a kid, I had relatives who were veterans, but most of them have passed away; to listen to what my veteran friends have gone through to get home alive always amazes me. It never falls on deaf ears with me.! It takes a very special breed to do what they have done, and I especially love to spoil my veteran friends with some kick-butt food. I hope you feel the same way, although these recipes will spoil the rest of us as well. I’m going to concentrate on recipes within the confines of the kitchen as opposed to grilling outside. I want to focus on some great recipes to make the house smell wonderful. Unlike most of my columns, this one contains no dinner ideas, but instead, two great breakfast specialties and some outstanding desserts. Let’s start with a great breakfast quick bread. I personally have an extreme weakness for almost any quick bread in the morning, usually finished in the toaster or buttered and grilled,
20 years experience helping others feel relaxed and rejuvenated while helping manage pain and alleviate the stress from everyday life.
and this bread is outstanding for either option. The pumpkin overkill can be a little much this time of year, I will admit, as it seems to be everywhere, but I do enjoy a few pumpkin options year-round, to tell you the truth. This recipe is most definitely one of them. The total process will take about 1 ½ hours and will give you 2 loaves of yumminess. Pumpkin Walnut Bread ½ cup old-fashioned oats ¼ tsp sugar ¼ tsp ground cinnamon 15 oz can solid pack pumpkin 4 large eggs ¾ cup olive oil 2/3 cup water 2 cups sugar 1 cup honey 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract 3 ½ cups flour 2 tsp baking soda 1 ½ tsp salt 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground cloves ½ tsp ground ginger 1 cup coarsely chopped walnuts ‘Cue the Grill Continued on page 23

In another bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, salt and all the spices, again, until well blended. Slowly and gradually, combine the dry mix into the pumpkin mixture in a mixer, scraping the sides of the bowl as needed until it is blended very well. Fold in the walnuts. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans very well. Pour the mixture evenly into the 2 pans and top with the oat mixture. Bake for 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean. Once out of the oven, cool for 10 to 15 minutes in the pan, gently remove, and cool on a wire rack. Don’t slice too early, but after ½ hour or so, it will slice fine and still be warm enough for the butter to melt in a beautiful fashion. Once cooled, slice it, toast it, grill it, or just butter and microwave for a few seconds. Regardless of your choice, the bread is wicked good! Classic Autumn Pumpkin Dump Cake A 15 oz can solid pack pumpkin A 5 oz can evaporated milk 3 eggs 1 cup packed brown sugar
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice ½ tsp salt A 15 ¼ oz package of yellow cake mix 1 stick melted butter ¾ cup chopped pecans ½ cup cinnamon chips…you can substitute butterscotch chips or use a combo of the two This is wonderfully simple and delicious…no better combo, right? In a medium bowl, combine the pumpkin, evaporated milk, eggs, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice and salt. Make sure it is mixed thoroughly, then pour into a well greased 9 x 13-inch pan. In a separate bowl, combine the cake mix and the melted butter until the mix is crumbly. Sprinkle over the pumpkin mix, top with the pecans and the chips. Put the dish in a preheated 350-degree oven and bake for 50 to 55 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Cool completely before cutting and serving. If you care to, microwave lightly before serving and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. I love them just the way they are, but there is no bad way to eat these. Pumpkin is not the only classic autumn flavor. The more common “go-to” fall ingredient is probably the apple. I know everyone loves apple pies, apple crisps and anything along those lines, but in my experience, I haven’t known many people who do their own Baked Apples. All in all, a pretty simple process, and with a couple of basic ingredients, it makes one fun dessert. Sure, it is sweet, but all
in all, it’s healthier than many desserts. Heaven knows there are many different kinds of apples out there, and to tell you the truth, there is no bad choice. I’m a fan of Granny Smith apples because the tartness works well with the sweet ingredients, as they somewhat offset one another. This dessert is guaranteed to make a great impression on your crowd. This recipe is for 4 apples. Walnut Stuffed Baked Apples 4 large apples of choice ¾ cup walnuts 2 tbsp brown sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon 4 tbsp butter, 1 per apple ¾ cup water Chop all the walnuts. In a small bowl, mix the walnuts with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Wash the apples very well. Cut off the tops, maybe ½ to ¾ inch from the top. Save the tops. With an apple corer, core out the middle, including all the seeds. Ideally, place each apple in its own small individual oven-safe bowl. If not, crowd the apples into the smallest possible baking dish. Stuff the apples with the walnut mixture. Plop a tbsp of butter on top
of each apple and put the tops back on the apples. Divide the water among each dish, or the one dish. Bake the apples in a preheated 350-degree oven for about a ½ hour or until they are tender. Once out of the oven, do your best to dump the juices at the bottom of the dish or dishes into a separate dish, serve the apples with a scoop of vanilla ice cream over each, and then pour the syrup that was on the bottom of the baking dish over the ice cream. This recipe screams fall and does so in such a taste-bud appealing way. Now let’s talk cookies. This is a great soft and chewy cookie guaranteed to please all your veteran friends wanting a doggie bag to bring some home. In a somewhat similar fashion to the apples, this recipe combines tartness and sweetness. The smell of these is the perfect incense for your home and although many cookies go perfectly with a glass of milk, these cookies are the poster child when right out of the oven with some milk. This recipe gives you about 4 dozen cookies. ‘Cue the Grill Continued on page 24

In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the butter and the sugars until well blended. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well. Gradually start adding the dry mixture until blended, then do the same with the oats, cranberries and walnuts. Using a tablespoon, plop rounded spoonsful onto a non-greased baking pan. Cook in a preheated 350-degree oven for 12-14 minutes, or until golden brown. Once out, let them sit for a minute or 2 before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Absolutely scrumptious! Last on today’s hit list, as usual, is my favorite recipe of the bunch, and one the veterans and everyone else
will be all over in a big way. We are ending with another pumpkin recipe – a classic Pumpkin Roll done just like a traditional jelly roll. I have never met anyone who dislikes a good Pumpkin Roll. This will feed 8, cooks quickly, and all you need to do is roll it up. Definitely one of those recipes that will wow your crowd.
Pumpkin Roll ¾ cup flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1 tsp baking soda 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 cup pumpkin puree 3 eggs 1 cup plus 2 tbsp confectioners sugar, divided 8 oz softened cream cheese ½ stick butter 1 ½ tsp vanilla extract
preheated 375-degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Get a clean kitchen towel, lay flat, and sprinkle with 2 tbsp of confectioner’s sugar. Place the towel, sugar side down, on top of the cooked cake, and very carefully with a set of hot pads, flip the pan on a counter so the towel is underneath the cake. While it is still hot and working from one of the narrow ends, roll the towel/ cake very gently in a jelly roll style. Put it on a wire cooling rack to cool. Once it has cooled completely, unroll the towel/cake and toss the towel. In a mixer on medium speed, beat the cream cheese, butter, vanilla, and the remaining one cup of confectioner’s sugar. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled cake, roll up without the towel and place on a serving platter of sorts. Wrap in plastic, refrigerate at least 2 to 4 hours, and when ready to serve, slice and plate. This is so decadent and wonderful and just plain good! If you care to sprinkle additional confectioner’s sugar, I doubt anyone will argue. Always remember to take care of the veterans in your circle of family and friends, and I feel confident these recipes will make them feel as special as you could possibly imagine. Our veterans are as special a breed as anyone in this country, so never forget to thank them for the incredible sacrifice they make for all of us. Keep your taste buds happy my friends. Ciao till next time.

fresh and appealing, for they focus upon the melodic capabilities of the instruments and their rich, mellow sound when played together in close harmony. For the audience, it’s very much like listening to familiar music being performed in an interesting new way, quite warm and welcoming.” Harvey Phillips, a renowned tuba virtuoso and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Indiana University, School of Music, founded TUBACHRISTMAS in 1974. He conceived of it as a way to honor the great tubist and teacher, William Bell, who was born on Christmas Day in 1902. The famous American composer, Alec Wilder, agreed to arrange a few carols for low brass ensemble, and the very first concert was held on the Ice Rink Stage of New York City’s Rockefeller Plaza in December 1974, with over 300 participants. Since then, the popularity of TUBACHRISTMAS has grown considerably among performers and
audiences alike, and in 2019, there are over 200 scheduled concerts in cities and towns across America, plus several foreign countries. Nancy Donahue, who studied with Harvey Phillips at Indiana University, is returning for her sixth year as the Conductor of the Wolfeboro TUBACHRISTMAS. The public is invited to attend the Wolfeboro TUBACHRISTMAS concert, which will begin at 2 pm in the sanctuary of All Saints’ Episcopal Church on Saturday, December 14. Yuletide Time at the Belknap Mill! Santa and Mrs. Claus are looking forward to visiting with children and families during the Belknap Mill’s 3rd Annual Yuletide Traditions event on Sunday, December 1 from noon to 3 pm on the first floor of the Mill, located at 25 Beacon St. East in downtown Laconia. Families are invited to take part in several holiday crafts, including writing to Santa, experiencing the story of Socks, the Belknap Mill Christmas Elf, having a personal caricature drawn by Artist-in-Residence, Larry Frates, snacking on holiday goodies and, of course, sharing their Christmas wishes with Santa himself! The cost of the event is $10.00 for a group of four or less and $3.00 for each additional person.

The Meredith Rotary Club will host the 28th Annual Senior Christmas Dinner on Sunday, December 8 at Interlakes Elementary School in Meredith. Senior citizens over 55 years of age from Meredith, Moultonborough, Center Harbor, and Sandwich are invited to reserve a seat for the occasion. “The Senior Christmas Dinner is always a fun-filled day that is free of charge for all participants,” according to Betsey Moulton Donovan, cochairman of the event. Since 1991, the Meredith Rotary Club has provided a full course turkey dinner, raffle prizes, music and entertainment, gift bags and a visit from Santa Claus for this muchanticipated celebration. Last year, 300 people attended the event. The dinner, which is provided and served by the Meredith Rotary Club, will be prepared by the staff at Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant in Meredith. Every attendee will receive a holiday gift bag and a raffle ticket for items that will be awarded throughout the afternoon.
“Each gift bag will include a Christmas tree ornament donated by Annalee Dolls, jams and jellies from John Moulton of Moulton Farms, Christmas candy from the Meredith Rotary Club, and other festive treats,” according to Teresa Forbes, co-chairman of the event. Music and entertainment will be provided throughout the event. Reservations are required for the dinner and seating is limited to 300 people. Service is on a first-come, first-served basis for available seats, with dinner to be served at noon. To make reservations, please contact the Meredith Rotary Club (Monday, Wednesday or Friday only) at 2797600 from 9 am to 4 pm beginning November 4 and ending November 25 – or until all seats are reserved. Throughout the years, The Meredith Rotary Club has donated more than $2.1 million into the Lakes Region community for charitable projects, area improvements, scholarships, and for individuals and families in need. Celebrating 65 Years of Santa’s Village in Bristol Join Santa and his helpers for the 65th year of a memorable holiday tradition. You will be amazed at the many sights that greet you upon entering the enchanted Santa’s Village at the Tapply-Thompson Community Center in downtown Bristol. The Village will be open on Friday, December 13 from 6 to 8 pm and continue on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 from 2 to 5 pm at the Tapply-Thompson Community Center. The event is free to all individuals. Visitors are asked to bring in one canned good item when you visit the Village, if possible, to be donated to the local Food Pantry. On Thursday, December 12 from 5 to 6:30 pm there will be a special Open House for all contributors that donate money, materials and time to the Village. Please come and preview the 2019 Village without the lines and enjoy some refreshments and treats. This is a small way of thanking the public for the donations that come in year after year.
Visitors to Santa’s Village can also shop at the Christmas Craft Fair on the main floor of the Community Center during the three days. The Craft Fair begins one half hour prior to the Village and ends one half hour after the Village closes. There will be over 25 craft booths to help you find that ‘special’ gift. Some of the exciting cast of characters you and your children will encounter this year will be Cadderly the Bear, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, the Elves, and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus. All children will have the opportunity to receive a cookie from Mrs. Claus and to visit with Santa and receive a small Christmas gift to take home for their tree. There will be photos available with Santa for a small fee, and cameras are allowed. For more information, call the Tapply-Thompson Community Center at 744-2713 or visit www.ttccrec.org.
