The Ultimate Outdoor Living Space By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper
Y
ou’ve probably seen one of these environments: a sprawling outdoor area with a shiny stainless-steel kitchen, a powerful grill emitting the scent of barbecued meats, gorgeously landscaped gardens, green lawns, and durable decks that invite guests to relax and socialize while lounging in colorful recycled material chairs. If this reads like an ultimate outdoor area, you would be correct. Drive around the Lakes Region and you will surely see decks, shade coverings, colorful chairs and much, much more. All this is happening because of the desire by homeowners to create luxurious outdoor environments for family. The national – and local - news has made us aware of the push to relocate to less populated areas due to the
pandemic. With the purchase of a second home or a permanent yearround home bringing city folks to the area, what better time to fix up your residence? According to Jeff Sirles, Brand Coordinator at Belknap Landscape Co., Inc., in Gilford, NH (www.belknaplandscape.com), “Upgrading outdoor living spaces is very popular right now. People are finding that enjoying the outdoors is a great way to spend their time off, and regardless of whether they can or cannot travel, being able to enjoy their own property provides a great benefit to them. Studies have shown spending time outdoors has significant benefits to mental health and happiness. During challenging times spending time outdoors, at home,

is appealing to many and we’re seeing significant interest in ways our clients can enjoy these benefits.” It takes skill to transform a lawn or aging deck into a dream outdoor area. Fireside Living, located at 1127 Union Avenue in Laconia, has the know-how —and the products—to make an outdoor living space a reality with grills, furniture, outdoor kitchens and more. Says Greg Connolly of Fireside Living, “We opened in 2009; I grew up in the business with my Dad selling wood stoves in the 1970s.” This was the energy crisis era, and Greg likely learned how to read the trends and the signs of what was happening in the news to correctly predict what products would be in demand. Fast forward to 2021, and recycled furniture is extremely popular. “We carry Breezesta Furniture, and they make durable furniture from recycled milk jugs,” says Greg. (This type of furniture, often in an Adirondack style chair, is highly durable and comes in a rainbow of colors.) Greg explains that Fireside Living also carries firepits, which are very popular. “We offer wood and propane firepits. They are popular nighttime ways to socialize and bring guests together.” Other outdoor items carried by Fireside Living include hammocks, grills and outdoor fireplaces. “We carry Big Green Egg, which is a solid seller for us,” Greg says. “It is popular because it’s a charcoal, smoking, grilling and baking product and people love it. “Outdoor kitchens are becoming popular and we can face them with a choice of materials, such as stone. They are durable and won’t rust due to the fact they are made of stainless steel. We help customers plan their entire outdoor living area, such as where to put an outdoor kitchen.” If the homeowner wants the luxury of an outdoor fireplace, Fireside Living can help. Greg says customers should be aware that the fireplace will be heavy, so make sure you choose a spot that can withstand the weight of a stucco or fieldstone fireplace. Once installed, the fireplace is heated by wood or gas. Visit www.firesidelivingnh.com.
Recycled is the Word As explained above by Greg Connolly of Fireside Living, recycled furniture is popular. The bright colors and weather-resistance of the tables and chairs made from recycled plastic (recycled milk jugs are often used) create very durable pieces whose color won’t fade due to the hot sun or crack due to heat and cold weather. The notion of not having to rush outside to cover or bring in furniture when a summer’s day brings on a thunder storm, high winds or other outdoor elements is very attractive to homeowners. The color choices, too, make the recycled furnishings popular. Tracey Leclair, co-owner with her husband, Mike, of Amish Country Barn on Rt. 3 in Tilton, carries poly recycled furniture and says they sell Adirondack chairs that fold and recline, and side tables in a rainbow of colors. “The white furniture is popular and the recycled materials the furniture is made of mean it is durable, long lasting and you won’t get a splinter from the wood,” says Tracey. The furniture is

Amish-made with impeccable quality. “The chairs are well made and heavy,” Tracey adds. The Amish furniture adds greatly to the décor and appeal of outdoor areas. “We can obtain rockers, swivel gliders and dining room tables,” Tracey adds. For information visit www.amishcountrybarn.wordpress. com. Last year, big, folding Adirondack furniture was very popular at Outdoor & More Store, located at 1287 Bear Camp Highway (Rt. 25) in South Tamworth, NH. “We saw dining sets as very popular,” says Nate McShinsky, who owns the store with his wife, Mary. “The sets range from a pub table and chairs for two up to 8 ft. dining tables with chairs for large groups of people.” These items will certainly be popular again this year with homeowners’ desire to utilize their deck and patio spaces. The shop carries a variety of poly recycled plastic furniture. “It is made from recycled milk jugs and other plastic containers and it is nontoxic,” Nate explains. He adds that Mission deep-seating sectionals and frames are also desirable and buyers can add durable Sunbrella covered cushions for comfortable seating. Outdoor & More has a wide variety of outdoor items, from furniture to such fun things as wind spinners (Nate says they carry spinners up to 9 ft. tall!), chimes, and unique solar lights. Water features also are offered such as fountains, and Outdoor & More offers something customers appreciate: the ability to install a fountain for the homeowner. Wooden custom signs can be ordered and Nate and staff will install these as well, should the customer need that service. Visit www.outdoorandmorestore.com. Custom is King The notion of custom design and building makes any outdoor project even more attractive. At American Custom Woodworking, located at 168 Sanborn Road in Tilton, owner Bruce Howard, knows wood and how to make an exterior space an eye-catching, artistic portion of

a home. “Customers want custom,” asserts Bruce. “We make entryways, doors, outdoor kitchens, handrails and wood railings and decks,” Bruce says. “We mostly use mahogany or fir wood.” If you are dreaming of a beautiful, custom-made wood door, you should realize it will last for a very long time, and it will be heavy. “We stock a lot of wood, such as hickory, fir, poplar, mahogany and cedar. We get some great reclaimed lumber from Sharps Lumber in Ashland,” explains. Bruce. Visit www.woodworkingnh.com.) Certainly finely crafted furniture is important at Amish Country Barn, and co-owner Tracey Leclair stresses that the Amish make “impeccable” pieces that last. She adds that the current issues in the United States (Covid, the Texas ice storm to name the biggest problems) have created shipping slow-downs. Thus, if you are thinking of ordering new outdoor furniture, plan ahead before the height of the summer buying frenzy takes place. Osborne’s Agway, located at 304 Daniel Webster Highway in Belmont (and with other stores in Concord, Hooksett, and Tilton NH), appreciates the craftsmanship of the wooden furniture they carry made by an Amish craftsman. They offer a poly folding Adirondack chair, as well as lawn swings, which is solid and well-made. The Importance of Outdoor Area Design At Decorative Interiors, located at 370 Union Avenue in Laconia, owner Stephanie Wentworth focuses on helping people successfully design outdoor spaces. Stephanie’s designs, which have beautiful areas for seating, dining and socializing, is all about planning. “We have helped a lot of people design three-season porches,” she explains. “These areas have an indoor area that spills out onto a deck or porch.” Those spaces have changed over time as trends have changed; outdoor grilling and living outside have become the norm in warm weather for many people and Stephanie and her team design the entire outdoor space, which includes a cooking/outdoor kitchen area.
TM
Homeowners with outdoor decks, porches and patios embrace complete outdoor kitchens and since many people have been spending more time at home due to the pandemic, they ask Decorative Interiors to add in specialized items such as a pizza oven or a bar area. “Woodfired pizza ovens are extremely popular,” Stephanie says. When you create a deck with cooking areas, you should think about ventilation, and if it will be covered, and Stephanie stresses when Decorative Interiors designs an outdoor area, they consider how it will be used and they work to get it right. “When we furnish an outdoor area, there’s tons of furniture to choose from,” she says, “There are great performance fabrics, in a huge spectrum of colors and patterns. One of the top manufacturers in outdoor fabrics is Sunbrella; they make really durable, fade-resistant fabrics,” Stephanie explains. Furniture is durable and comes in natural or synthetic materials, such as woven chairs, bar stools and light colored woods. Porch rooms have lights or layers of lights. Decorative Interiors is a member of the Lakes Region Home Builders Association, and they often work with other members of the group for specific landscaping, gardening and other outdoor jobs that impact Stephanie’s work. For information on Decorative Interiors, visit www.decorativeinteriors.net. Landscaping for Outdoor Living With hundreds of eye-candy photos of outdoor rooms and spaces, it is very easy to get caught up in dreaming of transforming your backyard into such an environment. But what should a homeowner consider before creating or upgrading an outdoor area? Says Jeff Sirles of Belknap Landscape, “There’s a lot to consider: The scope of work, budget, timeframe, and permitting. Doing a landscape correctly is deceivingly complex and doing it right takes a lot of effort. Be wary of quick fixes or those who can promise easy or fast results. In the long run, these typically end up with costly repairs or worse results.

Depending upon the style of your home, and the existing landscape, this could drive the choice for the finish surfaces of outdoor living spaces. The space has so much to offer, picking/choosing the right surface can make a world of difference of how this ‘room’ feels!” Look at the landscape and think about the things, such as beloved trees, you want to keep. This will factor into your design choices. (Is the birch tree you love more important than the space for a patio or lawn, for example?) Dealing with trees can be problematic. Explains Jeff Sirles, “Belknap Landscape employs an ISA Certified arborist, TCIA Certified technicians, and a wide variety of equipment. This gives us a broad spectrum of tree care services such as removals, pruning, view management, and emergency services, but we also are able to diagnose and treat diseases and pests, perform deep root fertilization, and much more. “There are many solutions to assist clients who want to have a great outdoor living space, but still want to retain their trees,” adds Jeff. “We specialize in creative and environmentally friendly solutions. We welcome clients who have this, or any other challenges but still want to enjoy their outdoor spaces.” Osborne’s Agway understands the outdoor needs of customers. They can help homeowners who want to plant trees, and they offer a variety of fruit trees, such as Reliance Peach trees and apple tree varieties. Osborne’s has a lot of garden seeds as well. In the spring, they find tomato plants for gardeners to be extremely popular, and those putting in a garden, whether it be for flowers or vegetables and fruits, will find Osborne’s very knowledgeable. More About Decking Decks are standard in the Lakes Region, and they provide outdoor entertaining areas, or a handy area to tie up your boat or as a structure placed over the water. “Decking options are as varied as you can imagine,” says Jeff Sirles of Belknap Landscape. “If you can dream
up a concept, it can be done. When considering your deck, think about how you’ll use it, and what may make your enjoyment better. Utilize this as a guide to upgrading your existing deck or new deck installation. It is important to design the deck with your goals in mind. Take into account the furniture you will be using, as well as circulation patterns through the deck as well. You don’t want to be stepping over your favorite chair to get to the grill or steps, which lead to the back yard. We see the most common materials used in quality decking are synthetic materials. They tend to last longer and provide great color options. Many of the synthetic materials can feel like real wood. Find one that suits your space and the ‘feel’ you want with this space.” When asked how homeowners should protect their new deck, which typically must endure being open to the elements, Jeff explains, “As with any aspect of your property, the best protection is appropriate care. Consult with those who build your deck for care during the first year, and inspect your decking annually for signs of chipping or worn paint and stain, rot, or damages. Make repairs as early as possible.” If you enjoy being outdoors in the Lakes Region, you will likely spend time on a deck, whether at your own home or as a guest elswhere. These easy-living outdoor spaces became popular in the 1980s when they were embraced as an extension of a living room or other indoor home space. As families spent more and more time on their deck, they added a table and chairs and a lounge area, a barbecue grill and eventually even a complete outdoor kitchen. All that use meant the deck was really taking a beating and the exposure to the outdoor elements saw the deck nails begin to pop, the wood to crack and the stain to peel. Mold from pounding rain and wintertime snow added to costly deck replacements. If you want to talk decks and building materials, one woman is very enthusiastic when it comes to composite decking. Laura Steenbeke, General Manager at Big Jim’s Home Center located in Concord, NH, says (during an early March interview), “We have a great selection

of composite decking and we’re ready for spring!” Decking sales are currently their number-one seller at Big Jim’s. “We just received 10 tractor trailer loads of composite decking in many colors from various manufacturers such as Fiberon, Timbertech and Trex”. Laura proudly adds that Big Jim’s has an in-house door shop, where you can bring your dream of a beautiful custom made door and work with the company’s builders to create your perfect door. Established in 1954 as Steenbeke & Sons in Boscawen, NH, Big Jim’s opened as their surplus division in 1993. Since then, Big Jim’s has added many first quality products where you can find great bargains on products ranging from doors and windows to kitchens and bathrooms. The owner, Don Steenbeke Sr., searches the country looking for surplus and discontinued products. The deals he finds are passed on to customers. Their motto is “you never know what you’ll find at Big Jim’s”. Ten years ago, Big Jim’s opened its current location in Concord in their 60,000 sq. ft. warehouse, which offers a drive-through lumberyard. Big Jim’s is located in Concord, just a mile off I-93. Visit www.big jimsnh.com. To take your deck from standard to spectacular, Jeff Sirles says decking options are as varied as you can imagine. “When considering your deck, consider how you’ll use it, and what may make your enjoyment better. Utilize this as a guide to upgrading your existing deck or new deck installation. It is important to design the deck with your goals in mind. Take into account the furniture you will be using, as well as circulation patterns through the deck. You don’t want to be stepping over your favorite chair to get to the grill or steps, which lead to the back yard.” Docks Docks are often constructed of the same materials as decks. Installing or removing docks from a lakefront home is best accomplished with an expert. work, and they have been doing so since 1974. “My Dad started the business in 1974, and I grew up around the lake. In 1993, he sold the business to me,” says owner John Ferrante. Center Harbor Dock & Pier does all kinds of waterfront work, from building new, seasonal to permanent docks. A lot of the work and the type of dock is dependent upon the location. John explains that if you want a dock for waterfront property at a place such as the Broads on Lake Winnipesaukee, where the wind blows a lot and there are substantial waves, you will need a very sturdy dock made of heavier materials. If your property is located on a more sheltered part of the lake, your dock materials may not need to be as heavy. “We also install boat lifts and we do a lot of installing docks in the spring and removing docks from lake properties in the fall,” John says. “Docks, much like decks, are made of either wood (which is heavier) or Azek, which is a composite material and lighter weight.” The choices of docks are endless, and according to John, “It comes down to use. If you want a dock that is going to be used mostly as a

place where you can sit and read and enjoy the sun, you might need a different style than if you have a boat and need a place to dock it. Or if you have a canoe or kayak and want a dock, your needs are different than those of a boat owner.” Lighting the Way Because outdoor areas and pathways are used at nighttime, as well as during the day, illumination is critical, although not often taken into consideration in the big scheme of things. There are a multitude of lighting choices, and low voltage lights are popular presently. Explains Jeff Sirles of Belknap Landscape, “Low voltage lighting offers beauty, safety, and usability to your landscape at night. It can transition a space you typically only utilize during the day to a place you’ll enjoy after the sunsets as well. A well-lighted landscape extends the enjoyment past sun set. It provides depth to the evening enjoyment of your outdoor living spaces. Not to mention your neighbors will have lighting envy!” Landscape lighting can add dramatic visuals through up-lighting or spotlighting areas you want to highlight in the evening. It can provide ambiance throughout your landscape or be a focal point of your landscape design. How do you determine what type of lighting will work in each area? Comments Jeff Sirles, “The type of lighting used varies based upon the desired outcome. We find that typically a mixture of lighting fixtures achieves the best results. A landscape lighting professional understands the outcome of certain fixtures and the effect these fixtures will have at night.” There are many lighting trends currently, such as solar lights, stringed filament bulb lights, and lights on motion detectors or timers. You can utilize bronze cast lighting fixtures, which have been around a long time but simply cannot be beat for quality and longevity. Making Music Most outdoor gatherings want to make use of music, but providing a sound system for a large space so guests who are spread over

your property – some on the deck, perhaps some by the beach or on a dock or lawn – can hear the music, might be problematic. Belknap Landscape has worked with homeowners to deal with sound systems. Says Jeff Sirles, “Waterproof and wireless speakers are becoming more common. These are easier to install and incorporate into an outdoor space while also being subtle and providing good results.” Being considerate of your neighbors is important. Noise ordinances vary from town to town, and in some cases neighborhood to neighborhood. Noise travels over water easily, so the noise from your sound system is particularly important to be mindful of if you’re on or near water. Be aware of the rules and laws which may pertain to your property. It may take you a little while to understand how your sound system affects others, so for the first several weeks you should be receptive to feedback from your neighbors.

Fire Features Singing around a campfire or toasting marshmallows over an open fire is a great way to socialize or end a day on the lake. Firepits are extremely popular and many people want to add them for socialization and ambiance. Before you shop for a firepit, there are things to consider, such as the size of the pit, specifically how many guests do you foresee wanting to have around the pit? Materials and style are important to consider. Do you want a traditional, contemporary, or unique design? Do you want a wood-burning or gas firepit? How frequently do you intend to use the firepit? Belknap Landscape typically recommends installing a patio around the firepit to aide in setting up furniture around or near the firepit. There are pre-made firepits, constructed of metal, stone, and other materials. Says Jeff Sirles, “We specialize in hand-built custom firepits. Wood is the most popular type of firepit. Wood does not require the installation of a burner and fuel lines, it’s typically easier to maintain, and many clients appreciate the ambiance of a wood-burning fire.” Things can get complicated – although beautiful – with such added features as rocks or glass for your new firepit. How to know what will work for you? There is a variety of materials you can use on a firepit, but there are materials to avoid. Some river rocks or other stones may crack or even explode under high temperatures. It’s important to hire someone who knows the appropriate materials to use, or to consult a professional retailer for guidance. As well as firepits, some homeowners love an outdoor fireplace. This definitely should be done by an expert. Says Jeff Sirles, “We begin with creating a design which will achieve everything the client wants. We then source the best materials available based on the desired style and aesthetic properties required. We excavate the area and create a thick base to eliminate frost heave concerns. A qualified technician or someone experienced in building this type of feature will help assure the construction will provide the best result.”
Dive Right In…Swimming Pools If you live in a state where the weather is hot year-round, a swimming pool would be a great idea. But in the colder New England states, fewer homeowners have swimming pools. Belknap Landscape installs swimming pools in a variety of sizes and styles. If you are thinking of adding a swimming pool, do your homework. Talk to pool installers and a few people you know who have swimming pools to find out what is actually involved in caring for a pool. How do you protect the pool during the winter, what about fencing, keeping the pool water clean, are just a few questions that pool owners can answer for you. Belknap Landscape also installs pool surrounds, such as patios. Water features are popular and often remarkable additions to the pool area. Says Jeff Sirles, “We have even installed wood-burning pizza ovens or outdoor kitchens poolside.”

Learn the Right Ways to Clean Lawn and Patio Furniture Once the days begin to grow a little bit longer and the numbers on the thermometer creep a tad higher, outdoor entertaining season is right around the corner. Homeowners may be anxious to once again return to the comforts of their backyards. However, their patio furniture may not be ready for lounging just yet. Some simple cleaning strategies make it easy to brighten outdoor furniture made of metal, glass, wood, and plastic. Before homeowners know it, their backyards will be ready for outdoor entertaining season. Proper storage Storing outdoor furniture during the colder months of the year is a great way to protect items from the elements. This may involve careful shrink-wrapping and keeping items outdoors, or by moving furniture indoors to a shed or garage. Cleaning the furniture one last time before storing it also can be handy. Remove stuck-on debris Inspect furniture and be prepared to remove any stuck-on debris, such as bird droppings, sticky food residue or even cobwebs and insect nests. Be sure to use a cleaning tool that is safe for the material you are cleaning. Test an inconspicuous area of the furniture first to ensure your tools don’t damage the furniture. For example, many scrub brushes can scratch glass or aluminum.

Make a thorough cleanser Clean stains off furniture with a versatile cleanser. A mild cleaner can be made by mixing 1⁄2 cup baking soda with 1 gallon of warm water, according to the experts at Better Homes & Gardens. Regular dishwashing detergent also can be mixed with water, as it has a mild bleaching agent. This cleanser can be used on plastic resin furniture or metal furniture, which are popular patio furniture materials. Check the cleaning instructions of outdoor fabrics, as there might be specific instructions on the tags. In some cases, fabric may be removed and washed in a washing machine on a gentle setting. A solution of dish soap and warm water also is a gentle way to clean outdoor fabrics. Once items are clean, HGTV advises applying a water-repellent fabric protector to minimize staining and maintenance. Strip or sand Wood furniture may need specialized care. If stains cannot be removed with a mild cleanser, then hard woods like teak can be surfacesanded to restore items’ original look. Pressure washers can often do more harm than good to patio furniture, so it’s best to look for an alternative way to clean them. Usually a bit of elbow grease and a cleanser is all that’s needed. Give the cleaning product time to work. Wipe down and dry the furniture thoroughly to prevent the growth of mildew.

Growing blueberries in a home garden can save blueberry lovers substantial amounts of money while ensuring they reap all of the benefits of this highly nutritious and edible berry. The following are some tips novices can employ as they plant their first batch of blueberries. • Consult a local garden center. The U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council recommends consulting a local garden center before planting blueberries. The professionals at such centers can recommend the best variety of blueberry to plant. That’s an important first step, as the USHBC notes that farmers cultivate dozens of varieties of highbush blueberries across North America. Lowbush varieties also may be a gardener’s best option depending on where he or she lives. A local garden center can help you determine which variety best suits your local climate. • Plant where there is ample sun and well-drained soil. The roots of blueberry plants should remain moist throughout the growing season, so choose an area where the soil drains well. If that’s hard to find, consider planting in raised beds or patio containers. In addition, the University of Minnesota Extension notes that blueberries require full sun, so plant in a spot where the blueberries will not be denied daily sunlight. • Prepare the soil. Blueberries require acidic soil, so running a soil test prior to planting is a good idea. Speak with a local garden center about soil adjustments if the soil is unlikely to promote growth. • Fertilize carefully. The USHBC notes that established blueberry plants will respond well to acid fertilizers. However, it’s important not to overdo it, as blueberries are sensitive to over fertilization. Follow fertilization instructions and speak with local garden center professionals for advice. • Be patient. The UME notes that plants won’t bear much fruit in their first two to three years, and that harvests are bigger after five years. Patience is a virtue blueberry planters must embrace.

‘Cue The Grill It’s Time to Get Grilling!
By Chef Kelly Ross
T
his time of year means many things to people as the warmer weather brings some of our favorite habits back to the forefront after playing winter quarantine. Motorcycles, bicycles, jogging, hiking, fishing, boating and just plain soaking in the sun rank at the top of things we can do right now. I’m a huge fan of outdoor activities, but one thing that comes to mind is we can all barbecue at any time, any day, and that to me is sheer happiness. I enjoy grilling 12 months a year, but it’s so much more fun doing it during the spring and summer, when family and friends actually want to be outside with me. Today is my way of getting you on board for proper grilling and entertaining. Whether you are a year-round griller or just breaking the grill out of its winter retirement, make sure to give it the proper love and attention it needs and deserves to get the busy summer grilling season underway. I generally buy a new grill every three to four years, but I use mine at least five days a week during nice weather and two to three days a week during the winter, which is way more than the norm. Even on the years I don’t buy a new grill, I am constantly buying new parts as the inside of the grill, as well as the grates, can take a beating. If nothing else, poke the holes of the burners so you get

even flames in the burners for ultimate cooking. Every grill seems to have a hot spot or two, but keeping the burners clean will keep the cooking consistent. Obviously, much of this depends on the quality of grill you own, but regardless, make sure it is in tip-top shape to start the grilling season. The ultimate in barbecuing relies more times than not on the sauces and marinades used. Since our theme for the day is barbecuing, most of the recipes will feature a wide array of barbecue sauces. When it comes to the many styles of barbecue sauces, many have some things in common: most are sweet and many are smoky, but one big difference you see is whether vinegar is used or not. Depending on what I am grilling and saucing often dictates what kind of sauce I use. Vinegar obviously brings that tang of sorts, which can help pucker the mouth, a little, and apple cider or red wine vinegar in particular are the types of vinegar I prefer. The great thing about these sauces is they go together pretty fast and have an outstanding shelf life under refrigeration. This is why, when I make my sauces, and considering how often I grill, I multiply the recipes 4-6 times to save myself some time down the road. I know there are some decent store-bought barbecue sauces available out there, but making your
own goes a long way, especially when your crowd asks you what kind of sauce you used and you get to tell them it’s homemade. And, if you make one you are not overly crazy about, dump some of your favorite store-bought into it and mix and you will likely be very happy. As far as regions of the country, every one of them thinks theirs is the best. I’ll start by sharing a few from the southern states; the first from Memphis is a little thinner than most sauces and definitely has a serious tang to it. The ingredients are fairly common, and with most of today’s sauces, the chances are good you already have most if not all of these ingredients on hand. You will have this done in all of 15-20 minutes. In particular, this sauce is outstanding on chicken, pork, and of course, baby back ribs, a Memphis favorite. This will make 3 ½-4 cups. Tangy Memphis BBQ Sauce 2 cups ketchup ½ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup white vinegar ½ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup spicy brown mustard ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp onion powder 1 tsp fresh cracked black pepper ½ tsp salt Combine all ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat and stir very well. Bring to a simmer, stirring, drop the heat to medium-low and let sit for another 10 minutes. Serve hot or let drop to room temperature and put into a container, cover and refrigerate until needed. Staying in the south, let’s go to Texas, and in particular, Dallas. You will notice some similarities, as well as some differences with the Memphis sauce. This will take about the same amount of time and will yield 4+ cups.
Dallas BBQ Sauce 3 cups ketchup 3/8 cup apple cider vinegar ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce ½ cup packed brown sugar 2 tsp paprika ½ tsp cayenne pepper 2 tsp granulated garlic, or garlic powder 2 tsp onion powder 1 ½ tsp salt 3/8 cup molasses 4 tsp brown mustard Whisk together all ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook 15 minutes. Again, use hot or bring to room temp, then refrigerate. Consider that, like soups, the sauce does get better with time. Another regional American sauce that is arguably the most famous is Kansas City’s version, and it’s also my favorite of the regional sauces. This one has everything: the sweetness, the tang and it’s smoky as well, and truly a wonderful mix of flavors. This sauce is made with a basic plain tomato sauce as opposed to ketchup, and it is also a very thick sauce. Again, it will take no more than a half hour and give you about 4 cups of yumminess. Kansas City BBQ Sauce 2 cans tomato sauce, 15 oz cans 1 cup apple cider vinegar 2/3 cup honey ½ cup tomato paste ½ cup molasses 3/8 cup Worcestershire sauce

2 tsp liquid smoke, which can be found in most supermarkets 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp granulated garlic, or garlic powder 1 tsp fresh cracked black pepper 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp salt A few pinches of cayenne pepper, optional but strongly recommended. The cooking process will be familiar. Combine ingredients in a sauce pan; bring to a simmer over a medium-high heat. Reduce to medium-low and simmer for 20 minutes or so and use or cover and refrigerate. Let’s try some barbecue sauces utilizing funky ingredients. If you like booze, you will love this one. Bourbon is one of those classic alcohols that “rocks it” when it comes to barbecue sauce. Toss in some hot and spicy and you have yourself a sauce you will love on just
about anything grilled. This recipe will get you closer to 6 cups or more. Sriracha Bourbon BBQ Sauce 3 cups ketchup ¾ cup molasses 3/8 cup bourbon 3/8 cup Dijon mustard ¼ - 3/8 cup Sriracha sauce 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 3 tsp smoked paprika

One thing that is important to consider, especially if you are cautious of the bourbon and/or Sriracha sauce, is to start the sauce by using about ¾ of the bourbon and Sriracha and let it cook. As it is finishing, taste it and add more of either or both as needed. Another great ingredient that goes so well into barbecue sauces is fruit. Let’s face it, most sauces have a bunch of sweetness in them, but the natural sweetness of certain fruits can truly make all the difference in the world. I say it a lot, but never be afraid to take a recipe and tweak it to make it your own. This recipe is loaded with delicious peaches, and wow, it truly brings a wonderful and unique flavor to the sauce. This recipe will give you close to 6 cups, and the sauce goes so well on just about anything. Peach Tomato BBQ Sauce 2 tbsp olive oil 2 medium sweet onions, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 inches of fresh ginger root, peeled and grated 3 cups canned tomato sauce 1 cup peach jam, ideally homemade 4 ripe peaches, peeled and cut into ¾ inch chunks 3 tbsp sherry vinegar Salt and fresh grind black pepper Heat the olive oil in a sauce pan over medium heat. Pop in the onion and cook until translucent while stirring/mixing, about 2-3 minutes. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another 2 minutes. Stir in the tomato sauce, jam and peaches. Reduce the heat to low
and simmer for about a half hour or until the sauce thickens. Stir in the vinegar and season with the salt and pepper, mix well, and remove from the heat. I need to share one more barbecue sauce recipe with you before we get into a couple of quick marinades. This is the game changer of all barbecue sauces, in my humble opinion, and although this one is also a regional sauce, it’s a foreign sauce as well so I didn’t want to group it in with all that is American. This is a Korean barbecue sauce, and it goes well on so many things, not just goodies off the grill. It’s great in sandwiches, on rice (yummy), and perfect for a stir fry sauce. This sauce makes much more than the past recipes, but trust me, prepare it as I have listed. I guarantee you will utilize every last drop of it, plus the only time I tried to alter the volume, it just didn’t come out the same way. Some recipes don’t translate well when we try to multiply or divide them, and this is one of those examples. Korean BBQ Sauce 3 cups reduced salt soy sauce 3 cups packed brown sugar 1 cup water 1 cup sake ½ cup Korean chili paste ½ cup honey 1/3 cup rice vinegar 20 cloves minced garlic, about ¼ cup plus 2 tbsp ¼ cup fresh grated ginger, about a 4 inch piece 6 scallions, thinly sliced 2 ripe pears, cored and grated on a graters finest side 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp Korean chili powder, or crushed red pepper flakes 3 tbsp corn starch ¼ cup water

Combine all but the last 2 ingredients in a pot, stir well and bring to a boil. Continue boiling for 5 minutes, stirring just about the whole time. In a small bowl, combine the last 2 ingredients until smooth. While stirring the sauce vigorously, slowly pour the cornstarch mixture into the sauce. Once the sauce comes back to a boil, let it boil for one more minute, continuing to stir until it has thickened and remove from the heat. Pour into multiple containers (I use one-quart canning jars) and let

cool to room temp. Cover and refrigerate. I want to end today’s fun with a couple of great marinades that are key to a great barbecue, obviously depending on what you are grilling. The first one is ideal for beef, chicken, pork or shrimp and the theme is tropical. Due to the make-up of the marinade, these are the recommended marinade times for each: Chicken: 2 hours Pork: 2-4 hours Beef: 1-2 hours Shrimp: 1-2 hours Tropical Meat Marinade 1 ½ cups coconut milk ¼ cup peanut butter 2 tbsp fresh squeezed lime juice ¼ cup soy sauce 4 cloves garlic, minced 2 Thai chili peppers, seeded and finely chopped 2 tbsp fresh chopped cilantro Salt to season 1 ½ lbs protein Combine well, refrigerate, and grill and enjoy! That’s today’s lesson in barbecue grilling! May you have a great grilling season, a safe summer in general, and above all, spoil those taste buds, my friends. Lawn Equipment: Get Ready for Backyarding in High Style This Year Backyarding is the trend that’s emerged during the pandemic. Our backyards are where we eat, work, play, relax and socialize, and the green spaces around our homes have proven to be vibrant places for connection and vital to maintaining mental health. So how do you get ready for lots of springtime backyarding? You organize your yard and ready your landscaping. “Take some time to plan out your yard with your family. Once you know the purpose you want it to serve, it’s time to start working with it,” said Kris Kiser, President and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), an international trade association representing outdoor power equipment, small engine, utility vehicle, golf cart and personal manufacturers and suppliers. “A well-cared for lawn and landscape provides the canvas for a year-round backyarding lifestyle. You’ll want to get out there with your outdoor power equipment, like your lawn mower and trimmers, as soon as spring arrives, and you want to do it safely,” said Kiser. He offered the following tips to get lawn equipment ready for spring: Refresh your knowledge. Read your equipment owner’s manuals and follow all manufacturer’s guidelines. If you find a manual online, save a digital copy for future reference. Look over equipment. Lots can happen in a garage or storage shed over the winter. Check the air filter, oil level and gasoline tank. Watch for loose belts and missing or damaged parts. Replace any parts needed or take your equipment to a qualified service representative. Check you have the appropriate batteries. Drain fuel tanks. If you didn’t empty the gasoline tank before storing equipment, drain it now. Fuel should never sit in outdoor power

equipment for more than 30 days. Untreated gasoline (without a fuel stabilizer) will deteriorate, which may cause starting or running problems or damage the fuel system. Protect your power. Use only E10 or less fuel in gasoline-powered outdoor power equipment. Most manufacturers recommend a fuel stabilizer be used, especially if you don’t use up all the fuel in the tank right away. Any fuel containing more than 10 percent ethanol can damage small engine equipment not designed for it. Store fuel safely. Label fuel cans with the date of purchase and ethanol content of the fuel. If you don’t know the date of purchase, dispose of the fuel safely and buy fresh gasoline. Always store fuel out of the reach of children or pets and in approved containers. Don’t mix up your battery packs. For battery-powered equipment, use only the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another. Follow all charging instructions and do not charge the battery pack or tool outside the temperature range specified in the instructions. Stash batteries safely. When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire. Tidy up. Clean equipment will run more efficiently and last longer. Clean equipment and store it in a dry place. Remove dirt, oil or grass. Never store equipment in a place that is damp or wet. For further information on safe fueling, go to www.LookBeforeYouPump.com.

How to Add Shade to A Deck or A Patio
Homeowners eagerly await the arrival of the warm weather so they can cast off the remnants of cabin fever and bask in the sunshine. However, as summer nears its dog days, the same sun homeowners once coveted can contribute to uncomfortable conditions in outdoor entertaining spaces. Meteorologists in Kentucky took to their neighborhoods in July 2020 to test just how hot surfaces can get in the sun during peak daytime temperatures. Concrete sitting in the sun almost all day reached a temperature of 134.7 F, while the same concrete in the shade clocked in at just under 80 F. When air temperatures are around 90 F, unshaded concrete and asphalt can be 125 F and 140 F, respectively. While wood decking may not be as hot as asphalt and concrete, it still can get steamy underfoot. Homeowners who want to be able to enjoy their outdoor spaces in an array of temperatures can think about investing in shade solutions. Sun-blocking ideas like awnings, shade trees and large umbrellas can help people enjoy their yards all day long. • Canopy: A patio canopy is typically a freestanding unit that can be installed over a patio or a deck. Some people prefer to bolt it down so it will not be knocked over in windy conditions. The fabric on the canopy can be removed during the offseason, helping to improve its
longevity. • Awning: Awnings may be stationary or retractable. Many are installed directly onto a home and can cast shade on specific areas of outdoor entertaining spaces. • Shade sail: Similar to an awning but a bit less structurally rigid, shade sails are large pieces of triangular fabric installed over areas of a patio, pool or landscape, according to The Family Handyman. Shade sails are light and airy and can be customized. • Trees: A natural way to increase shade in a yard is to plant more shade trees. If sun glare is an issue all year long, and it’s not just the heat of the sun that is troublesome, think about planting evergreen trees. Deciduous cousins will drop their leaves in fall and only be effective during the warm weather. • Patio umbrellas: Many umbrellas start at around $25. Umbrellas can be paired with patio tables, while stationary cantilever umbrellas sit out of the way on their own heavy-duty stands. A cantilever umbrella tends to provide more shade than patio table umbrellas. • Curtains: Homeowners can block sunlight outdoors the way they do inside, offers MSN. Hang curtains from the sides of canopies or between posts on a deck to provide shade and cozy spaces. Shade is in high demand when the sun is hot. Options abound for making outdoor areas more comfortable.

Gardening with
The Dirty Girls
By Rosalie Triolo Photos provided by “The Dirty Girls” Gardeners
W
ho are “The Dirty Girls” Gardeners? Beginning with a suggestion, from which an idea was hatched, resulted in forming a business plan, and the “The Dirty Girls Gardeners” was created. Little more than a year ago, Sue Berry and Sue Pollini, on a warm summer’s day, sat on a beach on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. During their conversation, Sue Berry suggested she needed something grown up to do. Both loved working in their home gardens and as Sue Pollini said, “It’s a good reason for getting out of the house.” She also reflected on the many days she spent working in the garden together with her mom. The friends (Sue and Sue) share an appreciation and knowledge for combining colors, forms, and shapes, together with an essential understanding of soil science. Their idea was to create a garden with plants that live in harmony with one another, and like being together, such as herbs, flowers, and vegetables, which would subsequently thrive in a healthy soil environment. Sue Berry added, “In New Hampshire, we have many different types of soil. So even if you start with healthy plants, if soil is not healthy the plants will grow but never reach their full magnificence.” Within a year, Sue Berry and Sue Pollini were partners in a flourishing garden business which immediately rocketed to success. Combining their talents, they design and create landscapes for outdoor spaces. Also, they offer ideas and suggestions while taking into consideration the wants and needs of the customer. They usually buy their plants from a garden center and hand pick (no pallets), each plant. As Sue Pollini said, “We pick up each individual plant examining it at every angle to make sure it is healthy.” Sue Berry added, “By hand, we place each plant in prepared soil, treating it as a precious gem. When the planting is completed, I take a step back to hear the music of a garden in harmony.” As the business grew, so did the need for a larger vehicle. Sue Berry’s old Subaru was tight on space when she and Sue Pollini hauled plants from garden centers to customers’ homes. Christmas Day 2020, Sue

Berry’s husband, Bob Brock, owner of Brock Loggers, surprised her with a brand new one-ton GMC Dump Truck. She laughingly commented, “When people call to hire us, they don’t expect to see two old ladies behind their door.” Aside from being one of “The Dirty Girls,” Sue Berry’s remarkably high level of energy, her deep understanding of botany, and her appreciation and knowledge of Native American culture have contributed to many of her life’s accomplishments. She considers herself a Renaissance Woman. And here is why: For 25 years, Sue gave her time, experience and simply enjoyed teaching Children’s Summer Programs at The Libby Museum of Natural History in Wolfeboro. Her work was an extension to the Museum’s programs, and Sue helped create and teach “The Earthkeepers” Program. With support from members of the community, in 2015 The Earthkeepers program was introduced into the New Durham Elementary School as an afterschool enrichment program for grades 1 through 6. The Earthkeepers learn about and appreciate environmental stewardship, kindness and caring for one another. A few months later, having achieved success, the program was extended to elementary school children throughout the Governor Wentworth Regional School District. Who are The Earthkeepers? For centuries, the Native Americans have had a direct and true relationship with their physical environment. Rooted in their culture is a saying, “We are all related. All things live in relationship to one another.” Another of her many accomplishments, Susan Berry authored the book, “Please See Me!” which is a metaphysical thriller addressing today’s problems of at-risk youth and adults suffering with emotional problems. A woman of many talents, she studied Traditional Oriental Medicine with Bo-in Lee, as well as learning the benefits of Holistic Medicine - Health for your body, mind, and soul. Her gardening skills and practices embrace and follow those of the Native Americans’ culture. “We are all connected in the web of life: in spirit, life’s purpose and

force. By design we need each other’s gifts.” Referring to the synergy of the three Native American-Sisters Crops: Corn, Beans, Squash, which serve each other with their own specific purpose, she explains, “Corn provides a structure for the beans to grow. Squash leaves shade the ground and keep moisture in the soil. Beans are nitrogen fixers. They take nitrogen from the air and make it available to the soil.” Sue also received a Mechanical Engineering degree from Rochester Institute of Technology where she studied Packaging Design. She commented, “I was more interested in designing the decorations on the outside of the package than designing the package.” Sue Pollini always thought of gardening as a hobby. She had worked side-by-side with friends offering her advice on what plants to choose and helped in arranging the plants so that they would thrive together in the garden. Sue loves textures and color and coordinates with stone masons when a customer is having a walkway or patio installed. When and how do they plan and design customers’ gardens? Their schedule begins in May when the ground is thawed, and runs through October. They spend every day together working from 8 am and some days until 11 pm. As Sue mentioned, “During those months, we have dinner together every night with our husbands, designing and planning customers’ garden landscapes.” Using her background in Holistic Health, Sue Berry, founder of the Winnipesaukee Soap Company, is a gifted and creative soap-maker. She handcrafts artisan soaps with a smidge of whimsy and a dash of sarcasm. Her distinctive humorous side is evident in her line of “Dirty Girls” scented soaps with catchy names: “Sweet

A Real
Sharp-Shooter
Newfound Lake Area Is Inspiration For Photographer Dave Redman
By Leigh Sharps
Wolfeboro, NH
V
eteran photographer David (Dave) Redman, of Bristol, NH has been shooting landscapes and natural scenes since he purchased his first camera in 1977. For those folks currently in the midst of spring renovations/redecorating projects, a visit to David’s website (djredman.com) for a peek at his gallery of photos, will have a homeowner considering one of these outstanding works to adorn their walls. Photography literally means ‘drawing with light’ (deriving from the Greek word ‘photo’ meaning ‘light’ and ‘graph’ meaning to draw). The art is only about 200 years old, but has evolved relatively quickly, technically and intricately, originating from a plain square box with a pinhole to the advanced DSLRs (digital single lens reflex) we know today in both cameras and just about every make of phone. Most phones today also shoot automatically in high resolution (sharp focus), which was often a challenge with film cameras and manual settings. But that just means that access to digital cameras/phones/software gives photographers even more ability to be creative. (Historically, a love of black-and-white photos, natural light, use of manual settings, color and black-and-white film and film cameras will continue, rest assured!) “I took pictures of life events then (1977), but I wasn’t using the camera for anything specific. My camera usage changed in the 1990s when I started doing bird photography. Then with the advent of film to digital photography, I had to invest more time to learn the software sides of that type of photography. As I progressed I began to take online classes to increase my skill level. I completed a few workshops and began to shoot landscapes. This was around 2010,” Dave said. After losing his wife to cancer, he discovered life again with his current wife of eight years. “I was introduced to Newfound Lake. This area provided me with many opportunities in the pursuit of my photography dream.” They moved to Bristol permanently in 2014. Dave said he had “no inkling that I would be a photographer later

in my life. I was a commercial hardware salesman for 24 years. When I moved to NH, I retired from that career. Retirement provided me with the time and opportunity to focus on my photography. Photography is my first and only endeavor in the art world!” One of Ansel Adams’ (the famous photographer 1902-1984) quotes was ‘Photography is more than a medium for factual communication of ideas. It is a creative art.’ Adams’ adoration of landscapes was paramount in his gallery photos of the Yellowstone Park area. Redman also favors landscapes, especially those around Newfound Lake. “Living in the Newfound Lake community, there is inspiration all around us every day. There is no lack of beauty, whether it is in the lake itself, the animals around the lake (or in my backyard), waterfalls, or foliage and trees, just to name a few. Lately, I favor both sunrises and sunsets. The peacefulness of the morning cannot be put into words.” ‘A good photograph is knowing where to stand’ is another of Adams’ quotes Dave adherse to. In his photo ‘Loon Island’, he says, “I go out most every morning for shots. It was zero degrees on a particular morning I took this (Dec. 19, 2020). The lake still had open water, the hoarfrost was on the trees and the sun was just coming over the mountains lighting up the mist coming off the water. I went to a different location than I normally go, pulled over, and noticed this amazing light hitting the mist. I set up ‘shop’ and began to shoot. This is my favorite type of project in that I can go to similar locations every day of the year and not get the same shot twice. I knew this one was a keeper. It just went up in my home!” (See Redman’s contact information below to purchase this print and others). “I like to get the picture right in the camera. I use filters (on the camera) to help control the light. In doing so, there is very little I need to do in post-process.” When Dave decided it was time to take “my hobby to the next level, I started selling my pictures at the Bristol Farmers’ Market. It was a slow start; six weeks before my first sale. Eventually, my skills improved

Barbara Platts-Comeau approached me in August 2018 and invited me to display and sell my photos at her recently opened store, the cooperative Riverview Artisans in the Bristol Central Square. I jumped on this opportunity as it gave me a permanent space. Over the years I have increased my client base through Riverview, my website, and through word-of-mouth.” Dave continues to hone his craft. “I take online classes and workshops. In the past few years, I have taught a class to local residents

raw what you love. It is an old adage advising artists to sketch what they like because it stands to reason you will be successful drawing something you find appealing. For Tuftonboro, NH artist Nancy Lane Piper that “something” is very often animals. Once you see Nancy’s pencil sketches, you will be amazed at her skill and you will probably ask yourself, “How does she do that?” Nancy’s sketches of dogs, cats, and other animals (as well as people and landscapes) are indeed amazing and the viewer stares and stares, baffled how pencil marks on paper can create an image that depicts a dog’s silky fur, the playful personality of an animal or the craftsmanship in the pencil strokes. “I have to see the eyes,” Nancy says when talking about her animal sketches. She explains the eyes are where the emotions are in a living being and if she can’t see the eyes in a reference photo, she cannot capture the personality of the animal. Born in Needham, Massachusetts, Nancy was fortunate to attend a school with a very strong art department, as well as having parents who were supportive of her artistic talent. After high school, she attended Syracuse University and then transferred to Boston University School of Fine Arts where she majored in sculpture. The skill Nancy has when doing pencil sketches of animals and people is rather sculptural in nature and when she talks about how she executes a drawing, it is indeed three-dimensional. “I like form, dark and light which is easy to see when working in pencil,” she says. “I am not really as comfortable working with color.” While sculpture was her chosen medium, Nancy realized it would be difficult to maintain an art studio with the space necessary to sculpt large pieces. Once she married (her husband Jack is a builder), they moved to an old Cape home in Melvin Village. With family roots in the area, Jack loved New Hampshire and Nancy fell in love with the area as well.

Not long after, Nancy took some classes at Plymouth State University and got her teaching certificate for grades K-12. “I started working in an art program at the Laconia State School,” she says. Then she worked at Laconia’s Woodland Heights Elementary School and later, the Governor Wentworth School District. She was hired for a busy job of travel teaching at six schools a week with 1,150 students per week. She eventually settled into a teaching position in art at Tuftonboro School and is now retired. With 30 years total as an art teacher, and two children (a son and a daughter) to raise, Nancy found little time to devote to her personal artwork. “I did an occasional commission, but we had busy lives. And I had a horse for 18 years and that is a big commitment.” When speaking of her life as a retired woman, Nancy says, “I love being retired!” She enjoys the life she has fashioned, and she is grateful to have a lightfilled studio in her home, with

breathtaking views of the mountains and her art commissions. “I found an art niche; I love animals and I know people love their pets. I did 17 portraits for an animal rescue person and it was good networking. By word of mouth, people saw my pencil portraits of animals and it took off from there,” Nancy adds. Along with animal portraits, Nancy has done house portraits. She says she often gets caught up in not only the house style, but the details of the trees and the lights and darks in a drawing, which adds to the time element. As a successful artist, Nancy knows the importance of networking and she has been a member of the Governor Wentworth Arts Council since the 1970s. She has had art displays in local libraries, and her work has hung in local banks where it is seen and admired by customers. Because she was a teacher in public schools for so many years, she often runs into former students, which is something she likes. Her volunteer work at the popular Artists in the Park summer event put her in front of many customers as well in the Wolfeboro area. Customers come to Nancy from all over and she mentions a pencil portrait job she just finished of a woman from Japan. The sketch is skillful and captures the bond between the woman and her pet. “The eyes are so important when I do a sketch,” Nancy reiterates. “The eyes are truly the soul of an animal.” Each commission takes about a month to complete, sometimes less depending on the image. Nancy describes her work process of studying the subject which is sent to her as a photo. (If she cannot get the details or the eye expression or the image is not sharp, if possible, she will visit the subject and take photos). Back in the studio, she immerses herself in the drawing, working around the paper, using a certain pencil, drawing the nearly sculptural texture of the animal’s fur. All the while, the scenery of Mt. Shaw is displayed from her studio’s window, creating a perfect place to work.
“When I am doing pencil sketches it is sculptural for me,” Nancy explains. “There is a comfort level in three-dimensional work.” Nancy has found the perfect life, and when asked her future plans, she says it is simple: “I have no plans to move. We loved caring for our animals, and we wanted to take it easier. With Covid, I have been doing some remote teaching of art classes for my grandkids. And I love my studio and doing commissions.” Nancy certainly savors the responses she gets from satisfied customers who react with smiles and amazement that the artist so skillfully captured their beloved pet. Now and then, a customer cries when they are presented with the portrait of their pet, especially if the animal has passed on. Their emotions and gratitude are extremely satisfying for Nancy, and it validates the notion that it is best to “draw what you love.” For information on Nancy Piper and her art commissions, email nancypiper6@gmail.com.

Under Cover Squam Make Upholstery Covers the Waterfront
By Leigh Sharps

eidi Emmons, owner of Squam Make Upholstery and Custom Sewing, does ‘Cover The Waterfront’ as an old song says, with her exceptional and impressive work reupholstering vintage boats, but her handiwork is much more extensive and includes the restoration of all types of furniture and fabrication of home accessories. Upholstery was a craft used for cushions and wall hangings in the Middle Ages, then a new era of upholstery emerged when window curtains and drapes for four-poster beds became popular in the 17th century among the wealthy. An upholsterer comes from an old English term ‘upholder’. In 18th century London ‘upholder’ referred to a person responsible for all interior decorating and all aspects of a room’s decor. A cabinet-maker usually partnered with an ‘upholder’ in London’s furniture making history. (At one point in upholstery history it was forbidden in England to use goat or deer hair in stuffing. The most popular stuffing became horse hair which was used for hundreds of years; use of goose and other types of bird feathers followed). In the U.S. the states of Michigan and No. Carolina was centers for furniture manufacturing and along with Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire (England) the finest upholsterers could be found. Furniture upholstery still thrives in the UK as many of the world’s best upholsterers are still there. Those skills used in early times have been handed down generation to generation since. In the U.S. one may find the very best upholsterers in every state and in NH one of those is Squam Make. The upholstery and sewing business is certainly a ‘fine art’ and calls for textile artists to be capable of handling a variety of projects. “My favorites are the unique, one-of-a-kind type, and that could be boats (the bulk of her work during the summer) or it could be furniture, which I love as well,” says Heidi. Her love of sewing began at the age of five when she started making clothes for her dolls and stuffed animals. “I then moved on to making clothes for myself, quilts and other projects. I always had a passion for sewing but my interest in upholstery came much later.”

She unofficially started her business in 2008 by “taking jobs on the side. But I officially (started Squam Make) full time in 2011.” She worked in her home studio in Ashland, and then moved to Holderness the following year where she set up her current shop. “I started working for Sue Robie of Country Sue’s Upholstery, also in Holderness. Over the years she has taught me so much and now we continue to collaborate on projects, bounce ideas off one another, troubleshoot tricky projects and refer customers to each other when it makes sense,” explains Heidi. She credits her mother being her mentor through her high school and college years, but after that “it is Sue Robie who has been an amazing mentor/teacher over the years since. I would not be where I am without her patience, talent and most of all her friendship.” Heidi’s first solo upholstery project was her own couch. “It was extremely satisfying and served us well for many years. I decided to pursue upholstery full-time when I realized that it was the first actual work I had ever done where the time seemed to fly by. I rarely looked at a clock. I still feel the same way. That old saying ‘Time really flies when you’re having a good time’ applied to the work of upholstery for me then and it still applies to me now. I feel fortunate to love what I do for my occupation. Of course there are frustrating days like there are with any job but that is inevitable in a field such as this. I love to sew, to work with my hands and body, to solve puzzles and to make old things new again.” Heidi describes how upholstery is completed. “While the process of reupholstering is somewhat different from furniture to boats they do share some of the same basic steps: Remove the old covering, do any internal work needed (retying/replacing springs or padding in furniture; replacing mildewed foam/rotten wood/rusted hardware in a boat); then rebuild the piece (if necessary) and cover it with the new material whether it be cloth, leather or marine vinyl. Each project is so different it’s really difficult to describe it in any straightforward manner. There are a lot of measurements involved for furniture and a lot of pattern-
making for boats, cars, etc. Sometimes, I also do custom built-in cushions for daybeds, window seats, and banquettes, and for projects like those, we start from scratch.” The ‘making old things new again’ philosophy is her main-stay of the business. “I love antique boats and car interiors and vintage furniture or anything with sentimental value to a customer. Bringing a beloved old chair back to life for someone who has nostalgic attachment to it is so heart-warming. One of my favorite projects was when a customer had purchased a boat his parents had once owned when he was growing up. He remembered learning to waterski behind it and spending many family hours on it. The boat had changed hands multiple times before he bought it and it had been re-done at least twice. He wanted it restored to the original 1979 look. To attain that ‘feat’ he showed me family photos of the old boat and he shared memories. We were able to restore it to what it once looked like. It was a fun challenge for me and a great outcome for the customer and his family.” Heidi’s proximity to the Squam Lakes, and their beauty, only adds to her inspiration as she works on watercraft all year round. “I definitely am inspired by nature and the world around me, “ she says. “This directly affects my personal taste in fabrics. I love being in my garden, tending to our farm animals, watching the birds and partaking in skiing, fishing, hiking and being on the lake. When I see fabrics that somehow capture the essence of all the things that I love, I am certainly drawn to those fabrics. One of the hassocks I recently completed was made with a beautiful bird-themed fabric, for instance.” She loves putting her stamp on those things she makes personally to sell, but the most fun, she says, is in helping a customer with their wishes and putting their ideas, not hers, into motion. “One of the more fulfilling parts of my occupation is helping a customer choose a fabric, or fabric style, they really love so they will be totally satisfied with their chair/boat cushion/antique car seat, etc. for years to come. I only give my personal opinion when asked, or if I am concerned that the fabric, whether vinyl

or leather or something else they want to use, is not of a high enough quality to hold up over time; or it’s just not an appropriate material for what they want to accomplish. I am always happy, naturally, to give my professional input, but I really like watching people figure out what calls out to them. After all, they are the ones who will be living with (those choices) not me!” Heidi uses only quality fabrics on furniture. “I enjoy using Crypton fabrics. They hold up really well and are resistant to even the toughest stains. They are nice to work with, look beautiful when completed and I feel confident the customer will have a hardy piece of furniture that will last a long time.” She carries a wide array of other quality fabrics and when doing outdoor furniture, or anything exposed to the elements, she prefers to use Sunbrella fabrics, which hold up exceptionally well. “For boats, cars, snowmobiles, jet skis, motorcycles, and tractor seats, I use only the highest quality marine vinyl on the market, from The Miami Corporation. If they don’t have what I need, they are happy to special order it.” Heidi loves having her own company and working for herself. She also has two highly qualified, full-time assistants, as the business is wellrespected and busy. But she is always ready to take on a new project. Having a home studio allows her to always be there for her two young sons. She notes, “I never miss a baseball game. I always have the ability to play in the snow on a snow day, or to attend a special luncheon at school. I feel so grateful to have found an occupation I genuinely enjoy but that also allows me to still make my family a top priority.” Get in touch by emailing squammake@gmail.com, visit on Facebook: Squammake, or the website: squammakeupholstery.com; phone: 802598-5985. For millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises. Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties. Many homeowners are interested in replacing their windows, but may not know where to start. These guidelines can help the process along. 1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows. When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Research permits. Most home renovation projects need to be ap-

Window Replacement proved by the local municipality. Go to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code. 3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures. Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style. Think about choosing a different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function. 4. Research top window manufacturers. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

Exterior Lighting Can Add Ambiance to Property The value of the right lighting in a home is undeniable. Lighting can instantly transform a room and create the ambiance homeowners are looking to establish. Though it might be mostly seen as a way to create mood inside a home, lighting also can do much for lawns and gardens. Backyards have come a long way over the last several decades. Once reserved as play areas for children and stomping grounds for the family dog, backyards have become oases for homeowners and their families. Outdoor living areas are wildly popular, and no such area is complete without exterior lighting. In fact, a recent report from the National Association of Home Builders found that 85 percent of home buyers want exterior lighting, making it the second most desired outdoor feature (patios topped that list). Exterior lighting can have a dramatic effect on landscaping, and estimates from the online financial resource Kiplinger.com suggest such lighting is inexpensive, with installation averaging roughly $67 per fixture. When installing exterior lighting around their landscapes, homeowners can keep various tips in mind to create a relaxing, awe-inspiring mood on their properties at night. • Consider uplights. Uplights are installed in the ground and direct light up at a tree, focusing on its trunk or canopy. This creates a dramatic effect that makes it possible to enjoy majestic trees at

night just like you might when spending time in the yard during the day. • Focus on trees. Many homeowners already have exterior lighting lining their walkways and patios, but focusing on trees can create an entirely different look. Though it’s possible to install exterior tree lighting on your own, landscaping professionals with lighting experience know which fixtures will pair most effectively with the trees around your property and how to arrange them for
maximum effect. • Opt for warm light. Warm white light creates an inviting feel around the property. The exterior lighting experts at Utah Lights acknowledge that choice of lighting is up to homeowners but also note that, in situations with lower levels of ambient light, such as in exterior lights around a property, people typically prefer warmer light. That’s because warm light tends to be easier on the eyes and directs attention to the features of the landscape, which is many homeowners’ goal when installing exterior lighting in their yards. • Utilize a timer. Modern exterior lighting timers make it easier than ever to control the lights outside a home. Many such timers even adjust for the changing seasons and the shifting hours of daylight. That means homeowners shouldn’t have to tinker with the timer once it’s set. Exterior lighting can add significant appeal to a property without breaking the bank.

ometimes the best things happen by accident. Thus it was for Wes Rippple. He was helping his wife, Suzanne Connor, with the Evergreen Fair, an event she ran at the University of New Hampshire. Many artisans were selling and exhibiting at the fair, organized by Suzanne, who is a talented quilter and artist (www.suzanneconnor.com). “I was there to help Suzanne,” recalls Wes, “and there was a bird carver at the show. I got talking with him about his bird carving and I was interested in what he was doing. He had kits for sale and I bought a chickadee bird carving kit.” The carver was Erwin Flewelling from Maine. (His website is http://www.nestlewoodbirds.com.) Erwin has been a great resource and mentor to Wes over the years. The first kit was a learning experience for Wes, but he soon realized he could do more if he got additional tools. “I bought a wood burning pen, paint and brushes,” Wes says. After completing his first bird carving, Wes was hooked and he bought another kit. By this time, he began to see the possibilities of artistic wood carving and while he is modest about his skills, saying, “I can’t draw and I am not an artist”, the finished products say otherwise. One of the first things Wes probably realized as he began to pursue wood carving in earnest was that this is not a hobby or art form for an impatient person. “It takes me about two to three months to complete a bird carving,” he explains in his quiet voice. He adds that while some carvers complete
projects much quicker, he enjoys taking his time to research and plan out, as well as carve, each bird. From time to time as he speaks, Suzanne joins in to further add encouragement; clearly, this creative couple are a perfect match, with Suzanne being outgoing and husband Wes quiet and measured in his answers to questions about bird carving. “I have been doing bird carvings for about 15 years,” Wes goes on to say. “I’ve been retired for over 2 ½ years and it gives me more time to dedicate to carving.” Over the years, Wes has continued to learn more and more about bird carving, talking to other carvers, and studying all he can about the many thousands of birds around the world. He looks at photos of birds online, in books and magazines, and even has traveled to the Cornell School of Ornithology, where one of the world’s largest collections of stuffed birds is housed. That trip, according to both Suzanne and Wes, was an amazing experience, with a huge collection of birds available for Wes to study and measure. That was a great help for his bird carving, because it allowed Wes to get measurements exactly correct and to see many of the lesser-known, as well as popular birds, up close. Wes has a small studio in his house, which is located in a peaceful, beautiful location right on a pond in the Tilton area. Wildlife is abundant at the pond, which is just steps from Wes and Suzanne’s home. While he works at bird carving, Wes can see birds coming to the bird feeders and visits from wildlife at the pond,
right from his studio window. (Suzanne also has a studio in the home for her quilting projects.) Wes has outfitted his studio space with all the tools necessary for bird carving. If one assumes the studio is a huge shop with all sorts of massive wood cutting machinery, that could not be further from the truth. The tools in the studio are not large and everything fits seamlessly in the modest space where Wes works. One of the first pieces of equipment Wes bought as he really got into wood carving was a Dremel, a hand-held rotary tool to aid in finishing a carving. “As I progressed,” he recalls, “I bought more kits and bigger tools, such as a high-speed grinder for detail work. And I have learned air brushing for painting and fine detail Female painting of the birds I carve. “ Northern All the tools are quite helpful in bird carving, Cardinal. a “hobby” anyone with some time and a desire to
do something with their hands could probably accomplish. But Wes is a natural talent and his work long ago was elevated from hobby status to that of a working artist, although he is modest to acknowledge that fact. Perhaps his philosophy is a key to understanding how he approaches the art form and one of the reasons Wes has won many awards for bird carving. “I am trying to tell a story when I carve a bird,” he explains. “I think about how I want to show the bird and how it should be displayed. I started simple in bird carving, but I now know it is also about storytelling.” To clarify, Wes uses a bird he carved as an example: A White

Wes at work in his studio. Breasted Nuthatch perched on a branch with pine cones. A sculptural piece of beauty and grace, the carving won a number of awards at the Ward World Championship in Ocean City, Maryland in 2016. The idea for the carving came about a few years before Wes retired. “On my lunch break at work, I would take a walk near my office. One day on my walk, I found a branch with some pine cones attached. I thought to myself that it would be a good branch for a bird to perch on, and later, I remembered it and used that idea as a habitat for the bird I wanted to carve.” The habitat, or object the carved bird stood on, was an important part of the overall piece. Wes could have simply carved a White Breasted Nuthatch and it would have been acceptable and lovely, probably displayed on a small stand. But, as an artist, he went beyond and imagined a setting for the bird, in this case, the

branch with pine cones. This is what Wes means when he says he wants to tell the entire story when he does a bird carving. Storytelling, or providing a habitat for each bird carving, has led Wes to hone additional skills. He now incorporates carved flowers and vines crafted from copper wire covered in a putty and painted appropriate colors into the overall finished piece. Birds he has carved can be perched on a vine with berries or near large flowers with twisted vines wrapped around a piece of driftwood or a tree stump. “Every part of carving is a challenge,” Wes says. “It is all handmade and I have to be a sort of master of all trades to do a carving, but I enjoy all of it.” The wood used for carving is mostly tupelo, which is a southern hardwood that comes from the swamps of Louisiana. The portion of the tupelo tree that is in the water is what Wes uses, and he surely cannot find this specialized wood in NH. He special orders tupelo wood online and when he can, he buys it from wood vendors at shows. The wood comes in large blocks and Wes uses every piece as much as possible. For a bird carver such as Wes, a piece of tupelo wood is as desirable as diamonds would be to a jeweler. He explains that when he starts, he must find the grain of the wood and cut the bird template following the grain. It is painstaking work that requires planning and knowing ahead of time what bird he wants to carve, its pose and size. The most popular birds among collectors are Cardinals and Blue Birds and Wes has created carvings of each. All the birds he carves are incredibly lifelike, but also works of art because of the skill Wes brings to each project. And again, they are works of art because each is placed in a habitat, perched on a birch log or emerging from a hole in a tree or on a berry branch, for example. Wes refers once more to the memorable trip he and Suzanne
took to the Cornell School of Ornithology, spending a few days to see the birds. He reiterates that it was extremely helpful to see just about every stuffed bird species one could imagine and to have the opportunity to measure the birds and take photographs for reference. As a skilled carver, Wes creates birds to actual size, almost always knowing what he wants to carve ahead of time. “I plan to carve a Cardinal soon,” he says when asked what projects are upcoming. Along with the bird carvings, Wes does feather carvings. Because it is illegal to own a real feather, the carved feathers are a great opportunity for someone to have a lifelike feather that has been carved from wood. Those who love nature and birds will appreciate the carved feathers, which are very lifelike. Called Spirit Feathers, each large feather comes with a printed explanation on the back of the display box that tells a story. For example, the Red Tailed Hawk Spirit Feather, the printed information says, symbolizes guardianship, strength, and farsightedness. The Spirit Feathers have been selling well despite - or maybe due to - the pandemic. People seem to be reconnecting with nature, and Wes has added Northern Cardinal, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Harrier Hawk and Barred Owl to his original four Crow, Snowy Owl, Red-tailed Hawk and Bald Eagle. The feathers also come in lapel pin size and make great and unusual gifts or pieces of jewelry for nature lovers. Both Spirit Feathers and the smaller feather pins have proven very popular with those who appreciate Wes’ carvings. Wes is currently working on a male goldfinch carving that will perch on a purple coneflower created from wood, copper, and brass. He also mentions a bird that is on his carving wish list: a shorebird. One can only imagine what Wes will create when it comes to
a shorebird, in its special water habitat. To view the carvings of Wes Ripple or to purchase his work, visit www.wesripple.com. Following CDC recommendations, Wes is starting his return to shows with two outdoor venues. Gallery in the Garden will be held (tentatively) on July 31 from 10 am to 5 pm and on August 1 from 10 am-4 pm. He will be part of the Canterbury Farmers Market on June 30 and July 28, both Wednesdays, from 4 pm-6:30 pm. (Information on the garden event will be at www.GalleryintheGardenNH.com.) What started modestly with a bird carving kit and a small carving knife, has become a passion and art form for Wes Ripple. It encompasses all kinds of skills, the opportunity to travel to bird exhibits and to talk with other bird experts, as well as a passion for the graceful, sometimes elusive, but always fascinating, birds around us. 9 N orth Main S treet D ow ntow n W olf eb oro, N H
