“A Rustic Woodland Christmas” at Castle in the Clouds The last day of Castle in the Clouds’ regular season was Sunday, October 22, but on November 18 the historic estate re-opens for its popular five-day event, Christmas at the Castle. This is one of the area’s favorite holiday traditions, and this year’s theme, “An Enchanted Rustic Woodland Christmas,” will be interpreted by over a dozen guest decorators displaying their talents both inside and outside the beautiful stone buildings.

The event also features an artisan fair, visits and photo opportunities with Santa, a children’s craft table, and live music. A festive preview party on Friday, November 17, includes a special evening viewing of the decorated castle, a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres, live music and special private access to the Artisans Fair at the Carriage House.

Christmas at the Castle is held on the weekends before and after Thanksgiving: Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 24, 25 and 26. Hours each day are from 10 am to 4 pm, and tickets good for general admission any day of the event may be purchased at www. castleintheclouds.org or purchased at the door prior to 3 pm each day. The cost is $15 for members, $20 for notyet members, and $10 for children ages 5 - 17. Riding in the Clouds will be offering horse-drawn wagon rides for an additional charge.

Admission includes a self-guided tour of the historic 16-room mansion, beautifully decorated for the holidays, that was built by millionaire Thomas G. Plant in 1914. The house perches on a knoll in the Ossipee mountains and enjoys sweeping panoramic views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Mountains. It is one of the finest examples of Arts and Crafts architecture open to the public in New

England, and over the past decade, nearly $4 million has been invested in its restoration.

Volunteer decorators for the Christmas event include Branch & Bloom of Wolfeboro; Bucky’s Restaurant & Tavern in Moultonborough; Cup & Crumb, Moultonborough; divine

inspirations!, Meredith; Dragonfly Gardens, Meredith; Event Builders, Moultonborough; Home Comfort,

The Artisan Fair showcases local craftspeople and hand-made products upstairs at the Carriage House from 10 am to 4:30 pm each day. Tickets are not required to attend. The Carriage House Restaurant, with its huge stone fireplace, cozy seating, and menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches, will be serving from 11 am to 4:30 pm daily, and the Castle Gift Shop will also be open.

Infinger Insurance is the lead event sponsor, along with Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile. The Castle Preservation Society, a non-profit founded in 2006, owns and manages 135 acres at the historic core of the Castle in the Clouds estates. The organization is dedicated to preserving, interpreting and sharing the buildings and landscape of Castle in the Clouds as a cultural resource for the benefit of the public.

Ring in the Holidays at the NH Farm Museum!

As the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approach, thoughts turn to food and handmade items. The NH Farm Museum in Milton is planning two events that will help you get into the spirit of the season.

On November 18, a unique event titled Old Fashioned Thanksgiving will offer costumed guides providing living history tours of the Jones Farm and discussing the Granite State’s very special connection to the observance of Thanksgiving as a national holiday in the 1860s. Guests will enjoy a sampling station where you can taste some of the food that was current at the time. Admission is $7 for adults/$4 for children/free for Farm Museum members.

A Wreath Making Workshop will take place on November 25 just in time for the festive season. Wreath making fuses two favorite things: foraging and crafting. Come to the Farm for this hands-on workshop to learn how to make your very own wreath.

While participants will need to bring their own clippers, other supplies are included in the workshop fee. By the end of the session, you will have a finished wreath you can hang on your front door or to give as a thoughtful gift to a friend. The workshop fee is $25 or $15 for members.

Storyteller & Mime Antonio Rocha Tells Tales for Children & Adults in Tamworth Friday, November 17 at 7 pm, storyteller and mime Antonio Rocha brings his one-man show to K.A. Brett School in Tamworth.

Presented by the Arts Council of Tamworth, Rocha (pronounced “Hawsha”) will be in residence all week, offering storytelling workshops to K-8 students and community members of all ages.

“If you want to make one cultural choice in the month of November that will expand your idea of what humans can do to entertain each other, this is what you’re looking for!” says Andy Davis, a local storyteller and member of the Arts Council of Tamworth board. “Antonio inspires us to live in our bodies more fully. He is fantastically talented and at the top of his craft.”

Rocha’s performance on Friday evening, November 17 is a ChooseYour-Own Ticket Price event, $5 to $30 for adults, ($0-5 for children). Ticket sales help support free arts workshops and diverse performances in the school and community.

Rocha’s free community workshop, “Beyond the Voice: The Art of Mime in Storytelling” takes place at Cook

Memorial Library on Wednesday, November 15 at 7 pm. Adults and children are encouraged to attend.

Participants will explore creativity through the use of body language and mime techniques.

Rocha teaches skills to create atmosphere, develop character, and craft seamless transitions in our stories during this participatory session filled with movement and fun.

Storyteller Simon Brooks says, “Watching Antonio perform draws you in deeply with movements akin to water being poured into different shapes invisibly waiting to be filled. It is the best kind of magic.”

Mark Your Calendars for Christmas Events!

By Sarah Wright The holiday season is upon us, and every town is gearing up for local celebrations. Whether it’s a craft fair, tree lighting, visit with Santa, or caroling, there are plenty of ways to have fun all season long! Attend one event, or attend them all—there’s something for the whole family! Here’s a listing of just some of the great events that will be happening all along Route 16.

Join the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce as they present the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 1, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

Other activities that evening include cookie decorating at the Chamber of Commerce; caroling by the Frisbie Carolers; dance performances by Studio 109 Dance, Voice & Drama; cookies and hot chocolate; a photo booth; a special visit from Santa at the Federal Savings Bank; and a reading of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.

There will be a collection taking place at the tree lighting to benefit children at the Homeless Center for Strafford County, sponsored by the Service Credit Union. They are requesting new books and puzzles for kids (ages 8 and up) as well as paper towels and toilet paper.

On December 2, at the Rochester Opera House from 7 to 9 pm, enjoy the festive sounds of the Strafford Wind Symphony at the annual Holiday Pops Concert. The show features favorite tunes…old and new, a special narrated

piece, and the famous gift basket raffle.

The Strafford Wind Symphony always brings great holiday entertainment for the whole family. Consider making this a family tradition! For ticket information, call 603-335-1992.

Also on December 2 is Rochester’s first annual Festival of Trees from 4 to 8 pm at Studley’s Flower Gardens greenhouse at 82 Wakefield Street.

Enjoy musical entertainment and carols, while strolling past over 40 decorated trees. There will also be refreshments and a cash bar. Children will be able to visit with Santa from 6 to 8 pm, and enjoy holiday readings with Mrs. Claus. At the end of the evening, the trees will be raffled off to be taken home by the lucky winners. Admission is just $2.00 or $1.00 with a canned or boxed good donation. Parking will be available in the rear parking lot of the Governor’s Inn, next door.

“A Hometown Christmas” Rochester Holiday Parade takes place on December 3, from 3 to 5 pm in downtown Rochester. Rochester boasts one of the largest and most spectacular parades in the state with approximately 100 entries. From marching units and bands to youth, organization, and commercial floats, this is a can’t-miss parade!

Exhibit Returns to Gafney Library The Gafney Library in Sanbornville will host the last in a series of art exhibits that began at the Gafney last December, during this month of November. “Timeworn – The Art of Architecture in Decline” by artists Peter Abate and Gary LaPierre has been shown in 10 New England locations since the December debut at the Gafney, Venues during the year included Conway Public Library, Wolfeboro Public Library, Azure Rising Gallery all in NH; The Goldberg Gallery at Fryeburg Academy and Glickman Library at USM in ME, and the Lynn Museum and Haverhill Public Library in MA. The exhibit includes works in a variety of styles – realism, abstract, three

dimensional, assemblage – and features or relates to the theme of broken down, dilapidated, forgotten architecture, structures and salvage, including bridges, signs, fences, walls. Also on display on the Gafney mantels are related architectural pieces and materials.

Hundreds of friends, family, fellow artists – including the Mayor of Lynn, Judith Flanagan Kennedy – have visited the exhibit over the past year to share Peter’s and Gary’s vision and love of “architecture in decline.” Selected works by the two artists may become permanent additions to the Lynn Museum collection.

Suspense in the Stacks at Wolfeboro Public Library The next gathering of the It’s A Mystery book group will be held at 10 am on Friday, November 17 at the Wolfeboro Public Library, with the selected book being I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh. At the start of British author Mackintosh’s accomplished debut, five-year-old Jacob Jordan lets go of his mother’s hand for an instant on a rainy evening in Bristol, England, and darts into the road, only to be struck and killed by a hit-and-run.

The investigation lands on the desk of Detective Inspector Ray Stevens and his eager new detective constable, Kate Evans. Mackintosh easily shifts points of view between the police, with the frustrations of their work, and the movements of artist Jenna Gray, who’s haunted by Jacob’s death and relocates to an isolated Welsh village, where she keeps to herself, with the details of her previous life a secret. The author keeps readers on their toes, slowly upping the suspense, with unexpected plot twists along the way. The Daily Mail (UK) said of this book, “The next blockbuster thriller for those who loved The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl…a novel with an astonishing intensity that drags you

in and never – ever –lets you go.”

If you enjoy reading mysteries and want to get together with others to discuss the books, the Wolfeboro Public Library invites you to join the It’s a Mystery book discussion group.

New members are always welcome to the informal gathering and joining is easy.

Every other month, a book is selected and copies are ordered through the New Hampshire State Library interlibrary loan system. In order to participate, you simply need to read the book and then show up on the day of the chat with your thoughts on the book. Participants usually share their recommendations for other mysteries as well.

Pick up a copy of the book at Wolfeboro Public Library today – the library is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 am to 8 pm, and Friday and Saturday 9:30 am to 5 pm.

Conway celebrates the season with many events! On November 24, 25, and 26, take a ride on Santa’s Holiday Express at the Conway Scenic Railroad. The one-hour, round-trip leaves at 11:30 am and 1:30 pm. Santa will be on board with his mischievous elves, who will share their hot chocolate and cookies with everyone. On November 25, the town of Conway will begin their “Old Fashioned Christmas” with caroling at Schouler Park, starting a 4:30 pm. Children will receive at Golden Ticket for a chance to help Santa light the 60-foot tree. At 5 pm, Santa will arrive to light the tree, and then from 5:30 to 5:50 pm, the “Parade of Carols” will process from the north end of Norcross Circle to the Eastern Slope Inn on Route 16. Santa will stop in front of the library to read ’Twas the Night Before Christmas before the resort is lit at 6 pm. Santa will reread the famous Christmas poem, while attendees enjoy cookies and hot chocolate. At 7 pm, kids can meet Santa.

On November 25 and 26, indulge your sweet tooth with the Jingle Bell Chocolate Tour in Jackson. (Due to the success of the event, a new date of December 17 has also been added this year.) Riders receive about 10 hand-made chocolates, with a festive holiday bag to take home any leftovers, and an Austrian Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride through town.

Art Works Chocorua Creative Arts Center - A Magnet for Artists at the Foot of Mt. Chocorua Story and Photos

by Larissa Mulkern The beauty of the White Mountain region has attracted nature lovers and inspired artists and writers, paintings and poems, since the 19th century.

Artists such as Winslow Homer and poet John Greenleaf Whittier and many more have fueled their creativity here, drawn by some unseen magnetic force that inspires art in all of its forms.

This is still true today in the 21st century, where artists of all mediums gather, create, teach and offer works for sale at Art Works the Chocorua Creative Arts Center [chocoruaartworks.com], located at 132 White Mountain Highway [NH Route 16] in the village of Chocorua.

The Arts Center is actually more of an arts campus. Situated on donated land and buildings at Chocorua View Farms, just south of Mount Chocorua, the Center is many things - a gallery with retail shop, a separate classroom and workshop, an artist’s studio and a garden that grows food and inspiration.

doing. The Gallery is the heart of it, but we also have the garden and do classes, host art shows, have studio space,” said Mary Beth Bliss, a glass jewelry artist, former gallery manager and co-founder of Art Works.

During a recent visit, Mary Beth and co-founder Myles Grinstead talked about the appeal of the local landscape and all the things the center, with its roster of nearly 40 member artists and artisans, has to offer.

Just what is it that draws such creative talent to the bucolic setting of Chocorua? “They all have different stories of why they settled here, with some fairly newcomers and others whose family roots here go back generations,” said Mary Beth.

“The sense of community smalltown offers is very nurturing and supportive for artists,” added Myles.

“We’re blessed with the natural beauty here. You can go walking through undisturbed forests, and I think that’s a huge draw,” she said. Myles was born in New Orleans and grew up in Iowa, a self-described flat-lander.

“When I moved here I was drawn to the small-town feel and the diversity of landscape that cornfields don’t have.

Here, you’ve got the farmland, you’ve got the trees, you’ve got the lakes, you’ve got the rivers, and it’s so nice,” said Myles, a potter who works in clay.

Mary Beth concurred. “You can’t live

here and not be influenced by nature,” she said. Mary Beth, whose family owned property in the Tamworth area, grew up in Arizona, Mexico and California. Her family returned to Tamworth in the 1960s, when Mary Beth attended, then graduated, from Kennett High School. As an adult, Mary Beth moved to New Mexico where, among other things, she opened an art gallery and studio with her husband, glass artist Peter VanderLaan.

Fast forward 30-plus years and it was time to return to Tamworth and keep the Bliss farm in the family. Art Works would soon be born.

Beginning...and growth Mary Beth, Myles and a small core of artists started in 2010 selling pottery, jewelry and art at the Tamworth Farmers Market, where they discovered, to their surprise, strong sales for artwork and not just for smaller items such as mugs and jewelry. Eventually the time came to find a dedicated space from which to showcase and sell the pieces.

They landed in an antique farmhouse with views of Mount Chocorua and lots of natural light. From there, they developed a system where each participating artist would come, spend some time running the gallery and handling sales. “Through practice and experimentation, we figured out all the backup systems we needed to be able to effectively handle sales,” said Mary Beth. Art Works functions as a nonprofit, with official certification as a federally-recognized 501c (3) organization pending. There is a jury process for artist membership, with members paying an annual fee and a consignment rate that is a percentage of sales. Work is selected based on quality of workmanship, visual appeal and sale-ability, according to the Terms of Membership. Working members (artists with other jobs) are required to work the gallery so many days or half days per year; nonworking members pay a flat annual fee of $240 or a $180 annual fee plus four work days per year.

Utilizing every square acre of space, the Art Center includes a separate arts studio with classroom space, and a garden that when in season, provides vegetables, fruits, herbs and such for eating - and inspiration.

Thanksgiving Tips to Keep You on Track

By Kristen Branzetti The holiday season is upon us! We all love the traditions and food that comes along with Turkey Day. However, we can certainly feel like we’ve “overindulged” after that extra plate of turkey and gravy and one more piece of apple pie.

Feeling “stuffed” is not only uncomfortable, but also can disturb our digestion. The good news is, there are a ton of simple tips and tricks you can add into your Thanksgiving Day meal to take away the guilt that can often come along with this holiday.

First, make sure you set yourself up to succeed, right from the start. Begin your day with a healthy and balanced breakfast. We tend to believe that if we skip a meal, we can make up for it with a larger meal later on in the day.

However, this is not the case. When we skip a meal, we set ourselves up for our blood sugar to crash and for our bodies to dip into starvation mode where we hold onto food since your body is under a state of stress when you avoid eating.

Here are some wonderful breakfasts that will keep your blood sugar regulated: · Pasture-raised eggs with Ezekiel bread and ½ an avocado · A berry smoothie with a hand-

ful of mixed greens and a good quality protein powder · Overnight oats In the hustle and bustle of getting ready for Thanksgiving dinner, try to remember to drink plenty of water!

Aim for half of your body weight in ounces. This will keep you hydrated, which will keep you from feeling sluggish and tired.

If appetizers are provided at your dinner, try to stick to the whole-food options. Whole-food options set you up to feel satisfied. Examples of these include shrimp cocktail, which is an excellent source of protein and veggie trays are great to pick at before dinner begins.

Now moving onto the main event, it is very important that you find balance on your Thanksgiving plate. Start with your vegetable and protein on the plate first. This will look like turkey and either carrots, Brussels sprouts, salad, green beans, etc. This should take up 60% of your plate, then move on to the carbohydrates. These can be your potatoes, stuffing, sweet potato casserole or bread. Try to stick to the one plate rule as well.

As for dessert, I recommend picking one or two small desserts to enjoy. This could be one or two tiny slivers of pie.

If you like to have coffee or tea with dessert, try to leave out the sugar, as you will be enjoying that from the pie/ desserts you are eating.

If you have the time and the weather is cooperating, it can be a nice break in your day to go for a light walk or stroll with your family in-between dinner and dessert or before dinner starts.

Even just a 10 or 15-minute walk can add some activity into your day to break up what you are eating.

There are always simple swaps you can add into your meal. Here are some simple swaps for cleaning up your dinner: 1. To make your gravy glutenfree, you can switch to cornstarch to thicken your turkey gravy or glutenfree flour 2. If you are gluten-free, bring your own rolls for dinner or a glutenfree stuffing 3. Bring your own water bottle to drink water on the way to the dinner 4. If you are a guest, bring a dish that you know you can enjoy within what you are eating 5. If you are dairy-free, bring a small Mason jar full of coconut milk or almond milk for coffee or tea In regard to the emotions around eating during a holiday, try to remember these things…

1. We tend to wait all year to eat some of the dishes we eat on Thanksgiving. But remember, you can go out and make or purchase those foods any day of the year! Apple pie, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and turkey can be enjoyed any day of the year. When we feel restricted and like that is the ONLY time we can eat these foods, we tend to over-indulge in fear of not being able to have that food for another 365 days.

2. Thanksgiving is just ONE day.

Do the best you can with what you have but if you tend to fall a bit off course, just get back on the bandwagon on Friday morning. This is not an excuse to throw away all of your positive changes and go “off the wagon” until Monday morning.

3. Remember what Thanksgiving is all about. Enjoy your loved ones and your family and the pie will be there too!

Ring in the Holidays With Open House at Heritage Park Railroad Museum Begin your holiday season with family and friends at an Open House on Sunday, November 26, from 9 am to 4 pm, at the Heritage Park Railroad Museum in Union, NH. Admission is free and all are welcome.

This special event to be enjoyed by “children of all ages” features tours of the restored 1911 Union Railroad Station housing railroad artifacts and photos depicting the railroad history of Wakefield and the many families who

A Homestead Christmas The holidays on the farm can be a magical time and the Remick Museum and Farm does it up right! Stop by and see how the holidays were celebrated in days of old.

A Homestead Christmas, takes place on Saturday, December 2 from 11 am to 3 pm. Join the Remick Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village to celebrate the season and share the rich history of homesteading. Tours of the seasonally decorated, historic Remick family home, the Captain Enoch Remick House, and samples of fresh-baked cookies, roasted chestnuts, gingerbread, apothecary items and wassail will be available. Tractor-drawn wagon rides and animal meet and greets will take place on the grounds and the Museum Center will feature seasonal exhibits; families can make a holiday craft. Demonstrations by costumed interpreters will include 19th-century open-hearth and wood-stove cooking.

Gift items and memberships will be available in the Museum Store; a “Jewel Box” queen-size quilt created by the Museum’s fiber arts group will be raffled off at the event. The museum is a participating location of “A Merry Tamworth Holly-Day,” which takes place the same day.

Join the museum staff for a Full Moon Campfire & Walk on Monday, December 4 from 7 to 8:30 pm outside around a campfire at Remick Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village. Listen to stories and make s‘mores. When the moon is up, you will take a stroll and listen for nighttime wildlife.

Weather dependent: if it is raining, this event will not be held. Dress for

the weather and BYO flashlight. The Museum will not be open for this event; meet in the backyard, behind main entrance building. No registration is required. The event is free, and donations gratefully accepted.

The Fiber Arts Group meets Tuesdays, December 12 and 26, from 9:30 am to noon. Fiber artists or interested onlookers are welcome to join the Happy Weavers & Friends group to observe the historic art of weaving, spinning, sewing, quilting and more! Bring your project to work on and the museum staff will provide a comfortable space. Led by Barbara Lord, Volunteer Educator, the group meets every other Tuesday, year round.

Admission is free (does not include access to the Museum). No registration required.

The Small Farmers Club will meet on Friday, December 15 from 10–11 am. Young children can experience the seasonal rhythms and chores of the historic farmstead at Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth Village. Through ageappropriate activities—including crafts, games, stories and animal meet and greets—participants enjoy seasonbased activities such as planting, milking, harvesting and wintertime indoor activities. This month’s theme is Bird Migration and Animal Hibernation. A parent/guardian must accompany their child for the duration of the activity. Also included are tours of the 1902 Russell snow plow, a 1950 era Boston & Maine caboose, the newly-restored Boston & Main water tower and the restored 1875 freight house. The freight house contains an operating HO scale model railroad for viewing based on the year 1909 when the Boston & Maine Railroad served the five villages of Wakefield; namely, Union, Sanbornville, Wakefield, East Wakefield, and North Wakefield.

Explore the many aspects of the historically accurate model project with its extensively detailed historic structures, steam locomotives, passenger and freight cars, and the many fascinating details amongst the impressive landscaped scenery, which includes Moose Mountain.

A new addition to the museum’s model railroad is a computercontrolled operating system. While the installation is in its initial stages, the German-produced software program provides prototypical control functions of moving trains. For example, a passenger train stops and departs

automatically from railroad stations as it follows its designated route throughout the miniaturized landscape.

Rich Breton, spokesman for the volunteer model railroad hobbyists said the group, representing seven NH towns, has been working on the railroad diorama for nearly five years.

The special Open House is being held concurrently with the 23rd annual Tour de Chooch. Tour de Chooch is a self-guided tour of 29 model railroads in southeastern NH and north shore Massachusetts.

In addition to regional visitors interested in trains and history, rail buffs and model train Tour de Chooch visitors from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, and NH are expected to participate in the hosted tours and demonstrations.
