Colegio offers three new programs Starting the new academic year, the Colegio opens its three new programs namely Bachelor of Arts in Legal Management, Bachelor of Science (BS) in Food Technology, and BS Nutrition and Culinary Arts. Š‡ ƒ…ƒ†‡Â?‹… ƒˆˆƒ‹”• ‘ˆĎ?‹…‡ applied for Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) approval of the three new programs but only Legal Management was the one approved in time for the enrolment. However, the Colegio still offers the two other programs for next school year. Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Rowena Capulong-Reyes said, “We only have limited programs so our population does not grow, it remains small, that is why we came up with new programs.â€? The idea of opening three new programs came from the experience of the Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Rev. Fr. Juan Ponce, O.P. in the University of Santo Tomas (UST). Reyes said programs like Food Technology and Nutrition and Culinary Arts has had a good market in UST and they thought

it would be good for the Colegio as well. In addition, Ponce said these two new programs will hopefully prove that the students do not only cook but also value the Â?—–”‹‡Â?–• ƒÂ?† †‹‡– –Šƒ– Ď?‹–• ƒ …‡”tain individual. He also said they would try to train the school canteen staff and pursue them to cooperate with the administration concerned for the value of nutrition in the students’ food. 7% tuition hike collected Š‡ ‘Ž‡‰‹‘ǯ• ‹Â?ƒÂ?…‡ ˆĎ?‹…‡ Šƒ• ’—– ‹Â?–‘ effect the seven percent (7%) increase in tuition and fees upon the enrolment of students for the academic year 20102011.

According to the Colegio’s comptroller Ariel Delas Alas, the increase is only fair because there was no increase in the tuition and fees last acadzemic year. Affected in the increase are the graduate schools, collegiate and basic education levels. Based on a memorandum released by the Treasurer’s OfĎ?‹…‡ǥ ĥ ’”‘˜‹†‡† „› ÂŽÂƒÂ™ÇĄ •‡˜‡Â?–› percent (70%) of the hike will be used to augment the employees’ salaries and wages, promotions and merits and other related „‡Â?‡Ď?‹–• ‘ˆ –Š‡ ‘Ž‡‰‹‘ǯ• ’‡”•‘Â?nel such as the 13th month pay, Social Security, PhilHealth and retirement contributions. Twenty percent (20%) will go to the improvement of the facilities and other operational costs like electricity charges, janitorial and security services; while the remaining ten percent (10%) will be reserved for the Colegio’s return or expansions.

Despite the increase, the turn out of the number of students in the Collegiate level was surprisingly higher than that of last year. According to the Admissions ˆĎ?‹…‡ǥ –Š‡”‡ ™‡”‡ ƒ –‘–ƒŽ ‘ˆ ;ǥ͚͡͡ enrollees from 1st-4th year in A.Y. 2009-2010 while for this year, there are 3,856 students. Delas Alas thinks it is probably because of two reasons: ‹”•–ǥ –Š‡ •–—†‡Â?–• •–‹ŽŽ Ď?‹Â?† –Š‡ Colegio’s cost of education affordable. Second, because of word-of-mouth that the Colegio gives quality education students are looking for. Delas Alas said there are two faces of the coin in the increase. First one is the student body, for they are the ones bearing the cost of education. Second face of the increase is the personnel. Each employee gets P 1000 per month as share from the increase. For example, for a college student with 21 units, the aver-

age increase will approximately be P1,200 each semester. “According to several students, this amount is not even too much. In fact, only the tuition itself was affected in the increase since the miscellaneous fee’s increase is less than P 200, still not that high, said Delas Alas. He also said that the Colegio will need to hurdle the increase for the purchasing power of the Colegio’s employees, to serve as their motivation and to further attract quality and good teachers. About the Colegio being one of the schools with the highest cost of education, Delas Alas said we are still on the median since the management is also conscious about pegging the tuition and fees on the high side, stressing, “quality comes with a price. Instead of dwelling on the increase, Delas Alas encouraged the students to look out on the performance of their teachers. “The students should be vigilant on the (ASIS); it should be their primary concern because they need to get the worth of education they deserve, said Delas Alas.

Values in action

A little word about ethics: it is the rightness or wrongness of human acts based on one’s moral reasoning. It may sound deep but it is greatly connected to one’s values. So, how important is ethics in our education? Being in the tertiary level of education is being in a battleground where we prepare for our future careers and professions. tough victories

Your paper, The Lance On our 34th year Bolder. Dynamic. Straightforward. This is the identity The Lance promises to its readers on its 34th ›‡ƒ” ĥ –Š‡ ‘ˆĎ?‹…‹ƒŽ •–—dent publication of Colegio de San Juan de Letran. For four years, I have seen the evolution of the student paper, not only in its annuallychanging nameplate and appearance but also in its ways of delivering the news. I have worked under the past two editors-in-chief and have witnessed their methods in running the paper. I have learned so much from them from my twoyear experience, from writing to leadership. On my third year in The Lance, a paper which values the •–—†‡Â?–•ǯ Â˜Â‘Â‹Â…Â‡ÇĄ ‹Â?’Ž‡Â?‡Â?–• Ď?Ž—idity and continuity of vision, aims bigger for its community, and promotes the ideals of a true-blooded Letranite shall unfold before you, our readers. Our goal is to give you more relevant and accurate news, fearless views and opinions, interesting features, back-to-back sports updates, intensive special reports, and a broad and unbiased coverage of events and ideas. All of these we offer as we move forward to another year of excellent and truthful campus journalism. Yet, our success lies in your readership and in the •—’’‘”– ‘ˆ –Š‡ ˆĎ?‹…‡ ‘ˆ –Š‡ –—dent and Cultural Affairs, Finan…‹ƒŽ ÂˆÂˆÂƒÂ‹Â”Â•ÇĄ ƒÂ?† –Š‡ ˆĎ?‹…‡ ‘ˆ –Š‡ Rector and President.

This is The Lance setting foot and welcoming you this academic year 2010-2011. Tougher Victories

Writing for the opinion section of the student publication for two years now is an opportunity and a blessing for me. Not every student gets the chance to speak, to inspire, and to inĎ?Ž—‡Â?…‡ ‘–Š‡”• –Š”‘—‰Š ™”‹–‹Â?‰Ǥ Well, this is Tough Victories in its second and last year. Working for The Lance has become more challenging and excruciating as I handle greater tasks. I have come all the way from being a persistent reader, to a news writer, to a publication manager, and now, being the chief editor. Indeed, I have become the longest-running staff of The Lance since 2008—a veteran, I suppose. Š‡ Ď?‹”•– –‹Â?‡ Š‡ƒ”† ƒ„‘—– The Lance, I said to myself I would be part of it. I did not notice that everything went so fast. Indeed, the higher the position, the greater the responsibility to take, and the harder the decisions to make. That makes victories tougher to reach.

”‡Â?‡Â?„‡” Šƒ˜‹Â?‰ Â?› Ď?‹”•– banner story in the November issue of The Lance back in 2008. It felt good just seeing my name on the paper’s front page, as the writer of the most important story of the month. I would have wanted to become the news editor the year after, yet I skipped the position to become the paper’s Manag-

ing Editor—a vice-president, secretary, and treasurer in one. I was in-charge of the operations of the publication. It was a bit hard but I loved that job as much as I have loved writing and The Lance family. Now, as the new editorin-chief, I am taking the lead. Nervous, yes, that’s what I feel —’‘Â? ’”‘†—…‹Â?‰ –Š‹• Ď?‹”•– ‹•sue. Pressured, yes, that’s what I feel when thinking about the expectations of other people. How would the readers react ‘Â? ‘—” Ď?‹”•– „ƒÂ?‰Ǎ ‘—Ž† –Š‡› compare us to the past editorial staff? What would they notice more—the new appearance of The Lance or the way we write and deliver the stories? People may think we produce late and we’re not as updated as what they expect from a newspaper. But, hey, The Lance is a monthly publication. We have deadlines, too. The stories you expect to read may not be in the issue you’re reading now. They must have gone beyond our deadlines that we could not squeeze them in. We are only a 12-page, 10-by-15 newsletter and we cannot accommodate all stories as much as we want to. Wake up! We are not a broadsheet. But, we’re doing our best to cater to your right to access information that concerns you and the Colegio. We are more than eager to diversify our stories. Because most of us are Communication students, it does not mean that we neglect other programs. So, I’m calling out to everyone to †”‘’ „› ‘—” ‘ˆĎ?‹…‡ ‘” ‡˜‡Â? ‡Â?ƒ‹Ž us at eic.thelance@gmail.com to update us on the most important news you heard of within the walls of the campus and we’ll try our best to give your news an intensive approach. This is my guide as I enter my fourth year here in the Colegio. Being a fourth year student is not an easy task and I expect everyone who has graduated to know this. This is the last year of my student life. I can’t believe that I am only a year away to the real world. From this point until the last days of my stay in this school, I promise to be a student Ď?‹”•– „‡ˆ‘”‡ ƒÂ?›–Š‹Â?‰ ‡Ž•‡Ǥ ™‹ŽŽ not just be an ordinary student. Work in print I started as a contributor for the Lance a year ago and now I am writing as your news editor, for my very own spot in the school paper, to speak my mind, and share it to you all (hopefully). First off, I want to thank the special people responsible for this new achievement in my academic life. (Yes, it may seem like a goodbye speech but it’s the total opposite, please bear with me.) To my very few yet unparalleled friends here in school: If it weren’t for your constant teasing about how slow I am at times, how corny I crack a joke and how wasted you notice I am during beating deadlines, I wouldn’t be the person I am now,

different from who I was before I set foot in the Colegio. Thanks. To my family who has always chosen to stay in the background: If it weren’t for your silence, I wouldn’t have pushed harder to get noticed and improve myself every single day. Thanks. To my mentors who have always ‘criticized’ everything I am: Thank you for doing so. Since day one, you have always believed in my talent. Thank you for the opportunity to write for the ExcelLance, hosting and directing a few petty and big programs, for bombarding us with lots of school works, I (and my classmates, too) wouldn’t have been aware of what the real

We need fully-functioning equipment that will enable us to perform our duties in the publication. I hope they will grant our request. This is me, as ME. Another ME is being one of the Master Editors (ME) of the Knights Cable Television (KABLE). Though it is not as hard ĥ Â?› Ď?‹”•– ÇĄ „‡‹Â?‰ ‹Â?˜‘Ž˜‡† in a media production such as KABLE needs a lot of effort. Sometimes, we need to do something abruptly when needed. Even though things are not in schedule, sometimes we need to produce something in rush, again if it’s needed. KABLE is back on the screens now. Enjoy! I have other tasks besides from being the two ME’s. I am also appointed as the Institute of Communication representative of the Deans’ Listers Society of Letran. I am also the president of our block section, CA4B. Thank you for your trust as you guys put me in these positions. ‘— …Š‘•‡ Â?‡ ƒÂ?† †‡Ď?‹Â?‹–‡Ž› I want to prove that I deserve to be chosen.

Sir Jay, with his humorous aura, is at your service. Sir Jay is a friend to everyone, especially to Communication students who frequently use the Media Center studios and laboratories and borrow the portable equipment. Being in service for 14 years, what pushes Sir Jay to stay in Letran? Sir Jay is greatly inspired by his family and his long distance relationship with his wife, who resides in Bacolod, while he stays in a dormitory in Intramuros. Aside from being the system technician of the Colegio’s media center, Sir Jay is also assigned to cover all the activities happening inside and outside of the campus where Letranites are related. If you can recall, every time there is an activity, there is someone behind us but usually in the front who is holding a big video camera. Sir Jay also assists the Knights Cable Television (KABLE) in the technical aspects of airing their shows in the Colegio. Truly, Sir Jay helps a lot of students. If you need him, he only stays at the Media Center building from Monday to Thursday and Saturday because Sir Jay deserves breaks on Fridays. They may not be as rich as the true celebrities, but deep in every Letranite’s heart, they make a big difference, and truly, they make our stay in the campus more memorable and exciting. We may have encountered

them during our bad days and blame some of them for not allowing us to enter the school because of the strict implementation of policies; we may have not paid attention on their efforts or to their explanations in our complaints; we may have ignored them when we see them around. Yet, we cannot deny the fact that they are part of us. When we look back after a

Perhaps, they only make their marks through doing their jobs or just through being the friendly neighborhood at the vicinity of Letran. These celebrities are just some of the treasures we have that students in other schools may be missing.

College is a lot different from high school. You may think that your last two years in high school is quite tiring because of all the work you had to do or pass, here in college, you should expect more. What you’ve done before is not even half of what you’ll do here. Another thing is you’re on your own now, you can’t expect your professors to check on you from time to time. It’s your job to look after yourself. When you get trapped with the worst situations, like being in a deserted island, how can you survive? Our answer, equip yourself with this college survival kit:

ollege life is the last step towards the ladder to success. It is probably a battleground where we are loaded with responsibilities in preparation for the real world soon. It will train us for the things we will face in the future once we leave the four walls of the classrooms. School year 2010-2011 has started and another batch of students enters as freshmen. What do they have to know about college? What should they expect? How are they going to handle the pressure? How will they survive?

1. Physical Strength. You can’t be weak or else you won’t be able to endure the exhaustion that you’ll go through. Since this is college, there are times where you’ll have to work all night in a project so if you’re physically ™‡ƒÂ?ÇĄ ›‘— Â?‹‰Š– Ď?‹Â?† ‹– †‹ˆĎ?‹…—Ž–Ǥ 2. Sense of Responsibility. It is important to do your obligations as a student. As mentioned earlier, you’ll be given tons of responsibilities here and you have to prove yourself. If you’re responsible, the amount of work to be done shouldn’t be a problem for you. 3. Passion. As clichĂŠ as it may sound, you really need to have passion in what you’re doing. You must do things not just because you have to but also because you love what doing it. 4. Enjoy! With love comes happiness. Don’t take things too seriously because there are times that if you’re too serious

Being feature writers, we are Â?‘– ĥ …‘Â?Ď?‹Â?‡† ĥ –Š‘•‡ ‹Â? –Š‡ other sections. We have greater freedom to write on a whole slew of topics. Last year I got to write some exciting and racy stuff for The Lance so I want my writers to do the same—to push the limits of their minds on how –‘ Ď?‹Â?† ƒÂ?‰Ž‡ –‘ •–‘”‹‡• ƒÂ?† Â?ƒÂ?‡ unusual topics acceptable for our readers.

Â? –Š‹• Ď?‹”•– ”—Â? ‘ˆ Â?› …‘Žumn for The Lance A.Y. ’10-’11, I would be content with introducing myself and showing you what to expect from the features section for the coming months. Maybe we can start with those random rants and ramblings that have sort of become my signature. Maybe we’ll delve into my thoughts about life, Letran, and a whole lot of other stuff. Maybe we’ll help out some students with their problems and questions. Hell, maybe we’ll even come up with a scathing social commentary about all the things around us. Maybe, just maybe, by doing this, we can inspire more students not only to read The Lance more often, but to start reading more in general. Maybe we can inspire students go past the required readings of their courses and read not for an assignment but to read for themselves. Maybe we can inspire students to write not only reaction and ”‡Ď?Ž‡…–‹‘Â? ’ƒ’‡”• „—– ƒŽ•‘ –‘ write for themselves, for their own development and for their own enjoyment. We want to inspire students to keep pushing the boundaries of their psyche and go beyond limitations set for them by themselves and others. If any of you guys want to comment or react to anything that you may have read in the features section of The Lance feel free, no, I encourage all of you to send me an e-mail. Don’t be afraid to stop me and ask questions if you see me in the ƒÂ?…‡ ‘ˆĎ?‹…‡ǥ ™ƒŽÂ?‹Â?‰ ƒ– –Š‡ …‘”ridors or even hanging out at Nanay Bising’s. I won’t mind and I would try to accommodate and entertain any of your queries as much as possible. Remember –Š‹• ‹• –Š‡ ‘ˆĎ?‹…‹ƒŽ Dz•–—†‡Â?– ’—„licationâ€? so I would love to hear what the students think about us and the job we’re doing.

Rex Arthur Amponin, a Letran alumnus who has never missed pep rally ever since college until now that he has graduated, said “What made this year’s pep rally extra special was the people who showed support to our athletes. For the Letran Knights, in all events, winning the overall championship last year was sweet, but winning it again this year will be much sweeter. The night ended with a heavy downpour which was nevertheless enjoyed by the students and athletes jamming and dancing into the trance of the music.

Looking forward to a great year, the Letran RSOs present their heads, who shall shoulder their organizations’ name. The Letran Integrated Media Organization, headed by senior Communication Arts student, Angela Suarez, promised a fruitful year for all students of the Institute of Communication with this year’s theme, “Back to Square Oneâ€?. The organization has scheduled their annual activities such as the Acquaintance party and Call Time to be unique this time. Jenny Canales, also a senior Communication Arts student, is as well ready for her job to redeem the organization as the managing director of the Knight’s Cable Television. They have aired programs such as the Letran Update, and Sulyap last June 16, 2010 and it got positive feedbacks coming from the students. The Letran Peer Facilitators Association is also on-the-go with the leadership of Levijane Pagaran, 2nd year Psychology student. Pagaran said that they will continue the bond and will interact with other universities this time around with their theme for this year, “Together we stand, we never fallâ€?. The Letran Junior Marketing Association lead by Anjelo Noah OrdoĂąo, 4th year Marketing Management student, said that they have prepared series of programs that will install leadership attitude to all members that will hone their integral formation. Mark Lagos:

the populist

A sense of gratitude We usually say “thank you after we receive something and got so much out of it. For me, I can’t stop saying “thank you even if I know that there is nothing done yet, and this is only the beginning. Is it too early to say thank you? Maybe, maybe not, but just being here already proved my worth. It made me see something in me; I can still go to new heights. I remember back in March when I was taking The Lance examinations, someone asked me why I was taking the exam. It was like, hey, just because I’m virtually unknown doesn’t mean I am deprived of the opportunity to be part of something special. That person got into me a little bit and made me want to prove something. I came into the

room that day only hoping to become at least a writer but after that person asked me that question, I was running on overdrive. I’m going to score high on this test. I will make it to the editorial board. I felt like I was a man possessed, hungry to prove myself to everyone that has doubted me. So eager, that I will go ahead of them. It’s not arrogance, I call it …‘Â?Ď?‹†‡Â?…‡Ǥ May 4 arrived and we got the examination results, and (obviously) I made it to the editorial board as the sports editor for The Lance. I felt blessed and I am so thankful to be part of it. I remember during the interview, Sir Bana asked me what pushed me to make it that high for a newbie. I told him that I wanted to prove everybody that I belong.

Hailed as the best for the third time. ÇŽ ‘Â?‹‰Š– ‘˜‡”Ď?Ž‘™ ™‹–Š Œ‘› and gratitude,’ said Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao after he received his Fighter of the Year and Fighter of the Decade awards at The 85th Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) at the Roosevelt Hotel, New York, last June 4.â€? It was Pacman’s third ‘Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year’, ™‹Â?Â?‹Â?‰ Š‹• Ď?‹”•– ‹Â? ʹͲͲ͸ ƒÂ?† –Š‡ second in 2008. His impressive performances inside the ring gained him and his country the honor of being the best boxer this year. One of Š‹• —Â?ˆ‘”‰‡––ƒ„Ž‡ Ď?‹‰Š–• ™ƒ• Š‹• brief bout against Englishman Ricky Hatton, whom he knocked out in two rounds earning him the light welterweight title. There was also his 12-round victory against Miguel Cotto, which earned him a welterweight title. The legendary Joe Frazier presented Pacquiao the Fighter of the Year award, which Frazier was also a recipient of in 1978. Pacquiao was catapulted to an even greater glory when he ™ƒ• Â?ƒÂ?‡† ‰”‡ƒ–‡•– Ď?‹‰Š–‡” ‘ˆ the last decade (2000 – 2009), in which the progression of his career was seen when he knocked down some of the world’s greatest boxers such as Cotto, Oscar de la Hoya, Hatton, and Joshua Clottey. The decade also featured victorious bouts against the best boxers like Marco Antonio Barrera, in which Pacman pulled off an upset way back 2003, and scored another victory against Barrera

in 2007. The three bouts against Erik Morales in which Pacquiao won too was also a highlight to his career and most probably boosted his international popularity to another level. Pacquiao also pulled off a victory against Juan Manuel Marquez after a draw was decided during their Ď?‹”•– „‘—– ‹Â? ʹͲͲ͜Ǥ Pacman’s trainer, Freddie Roach, was hailed as the ‘Trainer of the Year’ for the fourth time around. The pound-for-pound king won with a great margin when the votes of the BWAA members were tallied. ‡ƒÂ?™Š‹Ž‡ǥ „‡‹Â?‰ –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– boxer in history to be elected in a government position, particularly in the Congress, Pacquiao had undergone a crash course on governance for a fortnight as the Congressman of Saranggani. ‡ ™‘—Ž† ‘ˆĎ?‹…‹ƒŽŽ› „‡‰‹Â? It is also a blessing since I joined The Lance to learn and grow as a soon-to-be professional, but to be in the place of the editors, the opportunity to teach others is also there. Now I am on another level in terms of proving my worth. This is the stage where I need to ’”‘˜‡ –Šƒ– ÇŻÂ? Â?‘ Ď?Ž—Â?‡ ƒÂ?† †‡serve this one. Most importantly, as part of The Lance and its editorial board, we need to publish ten quality issues. Again, its not arrogance, I …ƒŽŽ ‹– …‘Â?Ď?‹†‡Â?…‡Ǥ Š‡ „Ž‡••‹Â?‰ I have received certainly fell to me at the right time. Just when I needed something to make me feel that I still have value. This means so much more to me than just working in the school paper, and having something to add in my resume. To simply put it, it’s about writing and enhancing that gift. This is something to answer all the questions doubters threw at me, and I’ll deliver emphatically. The Lance somehow sealed some parts of me being “enigmatic,â€? that despite my shaky personality and academic background, there is still talent in me worthy to be improved, some-

sports

thing to outshine the negative spots I have. I was labeled an enigma way back in high school by teachers, friends, classmates, and people beyond the four corners of the school. They may not have called me exactly as an enigma, but by their ™ƒ›• ‘ˆ †‡Ď?‹Â?‹Â?‰ Â?‡ǥ Â–ÂŠÂƒÂ–ÇŻÂ• –Š‡ only word that comes to mind. I could be someone out of this world by wonders in whatever task is given. Then I could also be this person so passive that it seems I don’t exert any effort. Somehow the passive image got stuck to people until it dragged me down. It made me crave for opportunities to prove myself, and The Lance provided me with plenty of it. Now, is it too early to say thank you? I say no. The only thing I am trying to say here is, don’t waste your time by second guessing yourself about grabbing chances if you can develop your talents and character. Lastly, be thankful to the people directly or indirectly involved in leading you or even pushing you to grab great opportunities. Now, it is all on me to prove that I’m no disappointment.

sports Alas toughens Knights for 86th NCAA “I’m not yet impressed with how the team plays.

These are the words that Coach Louie Alas used to describe his squad on what is the status of the team’s preparations for the upcoming National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) 86th season late this month. With nearly a week to go before their opener against hosts and defending champions San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Stags, Alas has more words to describe his disappointment with the team. “To tell you straightforward, we already have disadvantages; we have an inferior line-up compared to other schools, and I see that my boys are not yet focused and ready for the NCAA wars, the multi-titled mentor said in an exclusive interview by The Lance.

Despite that, Alas pinpoints the preparations that they have made this summer, and made sure that these will help the team. “We have harder preparations for this season, so we focused on their conditioning, teamwork and mental toughness to prepare them for a harsh season ahead.â€? Alas said. In addition to that, the team played in Cebu and will play tune-up games against some University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) teams ˆ‘” –Š‡ Ď?‹Â?ƒŽ ’Šƒ•‡ ‘ˆ –Š‡‹” ’”‡’ƒrations. Dz Š‡ Ď?‹”•– Č?™Š‹…Š ™ƒ• ‹Â? Cebu] tested the team’s character and will, while the tune-ups Č?ƒ‰ƒ‹Â?•– –‡ƒÂ?Č? ™‹ŽŽ –‡•– the Knights on how our preparations went,â€? he said. Alas, who just signed a threeyear extension on his contract, feels that teams to beat this season are Jose Rizal University (JRU) and San Beda College (SBC) and SSC-R.

Hard-working Knights bow down to Baste

The Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) Knights started strong but ran out of gas in the fourth to bow down against defending champs and this year’s hosts San Sebastian College – Recoletos (SSC-R) Stags in a thrilling game opener of the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) Season 86 at the sold-out crowd of Araneta Coliseum, June 26. Jaypee Belencion and Aloysius Taplah paced the Knights with 11 points apiece but failed to score in the dying moments of –Š‡ Ď?‹Â?ƒŽ …ƒÂ?–‘Ǥ Ronald Pascual, on the other hand, shows his readiness to take the spot of last year Finals Most Valuable Player Jimbo Aquino as led the Stags with 15 points, including a 13-point performance in the third quarter that started Baste’s run. Calvin Abueva garnered 13 points and seven rebounds to complement Pascual’s performance. The Knights started the game on a high note with a full-court ’”‡••—”‡ –Šƒ– Â?ƒ†‡ Ž‹ˆ‡ †‹ˆĎ?‹…—Ž– for the Stags, as they fell down to an early hole.

But Ato Agustin’s boys were determined as they took their time and equaled the intensity of the Knights, pulling out within three by halftime, 30 – 27. Pascual then stroke 10 straight points to start the third quarter and to take the lead, 37 – 33. Then they exchanged defensive stops in the following minutes of the third until the start of the fourth. Despite playing without top gun Kevin Alas, who suffered a pulled hamstring injury, the Louie Alas – mentored Knights managed to battle the Stags toeto-toe until the crucial stages of the game. They were within striking distance, 50-51 as Jam Cortes and Belencion teamed up. But Abueva drove his way to the basket and gave the Stags some breathing room, 53-50, with still three minutes and 54 seconds left before the ending was decided by stops on both ends of the court. The loss of RJ Jazul and Rey

—‡˜ƒ””ƒ ™ƒ• ˆ‡Ž– –Š‡Â?ÇĄ ĥ –Š‡› couldn’t get the job done on the offensive end in the dying minutes of the fourth.

Big men Kristoffer Alas and Cortes fouled out in the game, a proof that the game was as physical as it could be. “We committed a lot of turnovers and we missed a lot of shots,â€? said San Sebastian coach Agustin in an interview by the NCAA Press, referring to their 24 turnovers. “But I don’t mind if we play like this on offense as long as we play tough defense,â€? he added. “We played good, but just not enough to win,â€? Alas said in an exclusive interview by The Lance. Dz Š‡› Č? –ƒ‰•Č? •Š‘™‡† Č?–Šƒ–Č? they are really determined to defend their title,â€? he added. Letran’s next assignment will be on July 5, 4pm, as it takes against the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, who lost against San Beda College Red Lions, in the second game of the opening day. The Knights are remembered to be the one responsible ending the Stags’ wonderful 15 – 0 run in last year’s season of the NCAA.

Flying-V starts April 10

The Flying-V basketball tournament sponsored by FilOil opened last April 10 as The Arena at San Juan boomed with teams from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) clashing for the opening games. Letran went up against De La Salle University (DLSU) and the archers found a narrow gap to slip in the Knights’ armor piercing defense, and escaped with a 77-76 victory. On the other hand, the Ateneo Blue Eagles defeated the San Beda College (SBC) Red Lions with an eleven-point difference. The Letran Knights, although with some raw players, continued to perform at their best, with the self-motivated inspiration to win no matter what the cost was. They had endured rough roads, challenging them to go beyond their limits. When the Letran Knights faced the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs, they dodged a fatal bullet, giving them their 84-83 victory. Coach Louie Alas, who focused on defensive strate-

One was against the University of Perpetual Help System (UPHS) Altas in which the latter cap–—”‡† –Š‡‹” Ď?‹”•– ˜‹…–‘”›Ǥ The Knights and the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons played a deadly game of hard defense that forced both teams on foul troubles. The score remained low but UP fought back harder as they switched game plans earning their victory with 7875. Falling prey at the mercy of the Blue Eagles, despite their players not being in their most favorable condition, they still looked to be the leading team. The Eagle’s talon had hacked and slashed through the Knights’ armor to a 11490 point conquest. The Blue Eagles had achieved two things ‘Â? –Šƒ– Â†ÂƒÂ›ÇŁ –Š‡ Ď?‹”•– „‡‹Â?‰ ƒ„Ž‡ to score over a hundred points in the 2010 FilOil Flying-V Preseason tournament, and the second, winning against a team that was supposed to be physi…ƒŽŽ› Ď?‹– ƒÂ?† ‡“—‹’’‡† ™‹–Š
